AT “PRESSTIME”

As of August 3, there were 676 participants in Brigada’s top level network (which sent this Brigada Today)! That’s an increase of over 75 users in one week’s time! The reason? More than anything else, probably thanks to the recent Mission Frontiers article. (Thanks MF!) To get a list of Brigada’s whole family of dozens of conferences, send a message to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following word in the text of the message:
conferences

Each conference is a separate family, to be joined individually, if you want to exchange mail with that conference.

BRIGADA-PEOPLES OFF AND RUNNING

Thanks to Dave Dougherty for his willingness to head up the moderatorship for Brigada-Peoples. He’s given the conference the right mission, the right agenda, and the right start-up. A sample:

> Brigada-peoples is beginning a discussion of the whole idea of
> adopt-a-people. What can be done to advance this movement linking
> congregations and mission agencies to reach unreached people groups?
> Several churches and agencies are already starting to discuss this key
> program, and your input is important.

We’re hoping that Brigada-Peoples can be a kind of “foyer” for finding out which people groups have been “claimed” and by whom. This doesn’t intend to imply that there will be an attempt to forge a one-to-one match-up. Quite the contrary… more than one church, agency, and/or network will be needed to truly plant an indigenous church multiplication movement, in most cases. But the Brigada-peoples conference will help you find the existing “adopters” for your selected group… and if you haven’t yet identified a group to adopt, Brigada-Peoples will be a source for finding information about which groups are available.

To join the discussion, send an e-mail message to xc.hub with this line as the body of the message:

PROGRESS AMONG UZBEKS!

Protestant churches are sprouting in Islamic Asian republics of the former Soviet Union. A church planted in Uzbekistan four years ago has grown to 3,000 members and has planted 55 other congregations — 22 of them in neighboring republics. “My father received Jesus and I wanted to kill him,” said a former Muslim who now assists his father in pastoring 250 people at three churches in Tajikistan.

Thanks to John Hanna, of Caleb Project in Littleton, CO, for highlighting this “Global Glimpse”. His source was Page 1, July 24, 1995, National & International Religion Report, Roanoke, VA.

HOW ONE VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL DID IT

My family and I have just returned from a week with our major supporting church in NE Ohio, the Andover Ch. of Chr. [This is Doug talking.] For Andover’s nightly VBS, we used:

  • Monday: The 10/40 Window for Kids video (from Joey and Fawn Parish, 6673 Sora Street, Ventura, California, 93003; Tel. (805) 650-3511)
  • Tuesday: Prayer-walking for Kids video (also from the Parishes)
  • Wednesday: Light the Window (from CIN, 11025 State Highway 83, Colorado Springs, CO 80921)
  • Thursday: The Ten Four-O, a music video by Bill Drake, from OM
  • Friday: The Challenge of Our Unfinished Task (from Procla-Media, P.O. Box 26479, Colorado Springs, CO 80936

In addition, each night, we displayed a big 5′ by 5′ map of the 10/40 Window , explaining practical ways kids and adults alike could get involved in making a difference there. We brought volunteers to the microphone to pray for people and countries in the Window, so others could hear examples of prayer… and we highlighted missionaries who were already at work there, changing the future. By the end of the week, the VBS Director told me that her son had said that the missions segment was his favorite part of the entire VBS! We found an overwhelming interest in what God is doing in the 10/40 Window part of the world… and we’re excited about the possibilities at Andover. One woman said, “If we can’t participate in the 100 Gateway Cities prayer campaign, what kind of church are we?” Leaders of four churches in the area are discussing how they can get together as a network to take responsibility for planting a church in one of the 100 Gateway cities. God is at work! They want to do it in concert with the Envision ’96 PACE project, where Christian churches and churches of Christ are being invited to stand shoulder to shoulder with each other to “adopt” key cities and peoples in the “least reached world.”

Either way, one thing is for sure. Those kids’ eyes were riveted to the needs of the 10/40 Window. God is at work!

PRAYER FOR GUIDANCE REQUESTED

John Robb (Unreached Peoples specialist with World Vision and Coordinator of the Unreached Peoples Track with AD2000 & Beyond) wrote this past week, “Dear Friends, Please pray and get others to pray for this situation. We need to see God’s solution.” Quoting an internal World Vision memo by Dean Hirsch, World Vision International Chief Operating Officer, John shared the plight of Bosnian Serbs.

“Morality seems to have gotten lost in Bosnia over the past three years. There’s nothing moral about expelling neighbors from their homes, then blowing up their houses so they won’t come back, just because the family is Serb, or Croat, or Muslim. There’s nothing moral about kidnapping young women and keeping them as sex slaves. There’s nothing moral about making entire villages homeless. There’s nothing moral about 200,000 deaths. And there’s nothing moral about ripping boys as young as 7 away from their mothers to join the other “men” for investigation of war crimes, as we’ve seen in Srebrenica.” … While we’re limited in what we can do to bring about a political settlement, we can call for justice for the oppressed; we can and must call for the protection of civilians.”

Would you take a silent moment this morning to remember this critical need, lifting it in prayer to the Lord of hosts and asking Him to bring some kind of lasting resolution to this moral crisis?

BRIGADA OPENS PARTNERSHIP WITH “ADVANCE”

Thanks to Mark Kelly (Compuserve 70420,1057) for the work he does on “Advance”, a monthly email and print magazine to highlight the need to pray for unreached peoples and persecuted believers. Folks, this is good stuff. Each issue works hard to feature resources for making a difference among 10/40 Window peoples. Now, in the past few days, Brigada and Advance have formed a kind of partnership, since their agendas are so similar. Advance will be available directly in the Brigada file storage area and highlights will be featured in Brigada Today . To retrieve the full August edition of Advance, send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following words in the body of the message:
get brigada advance.9508

The August issue contains the following main articles and items: THE GOSPEL FOR EVERY PEOPLE —

  • Summary re: status of Bible translation — at least one book in 2092 out of 6000 languages
  • DAWN India report — 200,000 churches already established on the way to 491,000!)… “One pastor reported his congregation grew from seven in 1973 to 7,400 today and has started 75 missions. He envisions 1,000 congregations in five years….”
  • Jesus Film update — “To date, more than 701 million people in 220 countries have seen the Jesus film…”
  • Baptist World Congress calls for targeting the world with “no access”
  • Tons more on persecuted believers
  • Close-up on Fulani
  • Close-up on Jakarta
  • Close-up on World A — China
  • The Cities!
  • Networking “close-ups” — World Prayer Center, resources, etc.
  • FRONT LINES — Editorial on “Our timid prayers”

Mark hopes all users will put him on their mission publication’s mailing list (Mark Kelly, 70420,1057 — or snail-mail to 8992 Midway Rd., Richmond, VA 23229)

Believe me, in this one move, Brigada has become infinitely more useful — just through association with what Mark is doing!

ETHNOLOGUE ON LINE

Have you checked out the Ethnologue online??? (Information regarding the languages of the world and where they are spoken) Try it out at…
http://www-ala.doc.ic.ac.uk/~rap/Ethnologue/eth.html
Also, check out the SIL homepage at
http://sil.org
Thanks to Matt Benjamin, who works with Ron Rowland in computer support at SIL, for this info. He’s just started a new project for SIL’s Strategic Information Office and he’d like your help. His task is a simple one: “to research missions-related materials on the Internet, … looking for and cataloging information in the following categories: countries, cities, regions (ie-Tibet, African studies, etc.), peoples, ethnic studies, world religions, demographics/population studies, anthropology,languages/linguistics,national governments, and topics related to any of these, … country WWW server lists/click maps.” So Matt, what are you going to do with all your spare time? If you can help Matt collect these resources (and no doubt put them on line somewhere so we can all see them, right Matt???), write him at mattdotbenjaminatsildotorg  (mattdotbenjaminatsildotorg)

JOHNSTONE WORKING ON “AFFINITY BLOCKS”

Patrick Johnstone (author of Operation World and Chairman of the AD2000 & Beyond Unreached Peoples Track) has a new project — affinity blocks. These aren’t a replacement for legos. Nor are they intended to replace the list of 1500-2500 groups being finalized for the AD2000 & Beyond emphasis on planting churches among the “final frontiers.” Instead, Johnstone simply wants us to be able to simplify the landscape. Watch for more details on this concept in the future… and look for it to help us see connections between our work and workers! Thanks Patrick!

KOREAN CHURCH FINISHED GCOWE WITH POSITIVE BALANCE

Ready for some news about an organization that finished something “in the black”???! Here it is . GCOWE. Thanks to some good planning and the power of His Spirit, the Korean church ended up debt-free on AD2000 & Beyond’s Seoul extravaganza! Bravo Luis, and all those working with you … and bravo Seoul coordinators! !! Even more importantly, working together ended up in the black! Take, for example, the SM2000 student missions conference, where tens of thousand Korean students pledged themselves to be available for worldwide mission outreaches. According to a recent letter from Luis Bush, AD2000 & Beyond International Director, leaders concluded, “For so many groups to cooperate was also a big first! … Yes, together we can obey the Great Commission of our Lord Jesus Christ, and yes, together we can achieve the task of world evangelization–Yes, together we can.” Furthermore, Korean church leaders in the USA have covenanted together to officially adopt 300 of the integrated AD 2000 target list at their AD2000 focused conference in Wheaton next year, and Korean mission leaders (at Torch Center) hope to adopt 100 of the list. Korean leaders have also made the commitment to “convene the denominational leaders here in Korea to adopt each of the remaining peoples on the list.” What an initiative!!! Now comes the problem of tying together a ready-to-work Korean congregation with your mission or network! Enter Brigada! Start a Brigada conference on the 10/40 Window people group you’re targeting and … presto-change-oh . . . you’ll have a Korean partner checking in… I bet. :-)

Luis Bush’s conclusion regarding everything God has done in Korea??? “Praise the Lord!” He ended his letter, “The End.” But it looks to me like he should have probably entitled it, “Another beginning!”

--------------------------------------

AD2000 & BEYOND’S LIST OF “LEAST REACHED” PEOPLES COMING INTO FOCUS

According to mail passing by our Brigada news desk, AD2000 & Beyond leaders are hoping to finalize the criteria for inclusion into a finalized list of “least reached” peoples by August 12 … just 6 days away! Pray for John Robb, Coordinator of the Unreached Peoples Track, who will need to shoulder ultimate responsibility for this burdensome task. Once criteria is finalized, Ron Rowland (of SIL/Wycliffe) and others will assemble the list that will serve as a key guide (and a measuring stick for AD2000 & Beyond) for national, regional, denominational, congregational and agency church- planting initiatives for at least the next 18 months or so.

ONE BRIGADA READER’S PRAYER

[The following overheard on a Brigada conference:] “How I thank God for His many answers to prayer, including GCOWE, Brigada, the prayer movement, your moderating this conference, David , and all that God is doing through His people for worldwide evangelization

I am so grateful for the movement to reach every people group, and am so excited about the goal to reach every person with the gospel by the year 2000! It cost Jesus such an incredibly high price to give us salvation, that I long and pray that as many as possible will be saved (I Tim 2:1-4) according to God’s will, and that all of us Christians will love Him fervently with all our hearts and please Him in every way. Our God is the greatest treasure imaginable, and we want as many as possible to have the joy and privilege of being His own and serving Him!

I grew up in Mexico, as my parents were missionaries there, and am very interested in knowing if anyone has Adopt-A-People information available in Spanish. I would like to try to get as many Spanish-speaking churches interested in adopting a people as possible (as well as English-Speaking churches).

Thank you very much for your help. I am trying to pray for Brigada, and as many of the other evangelization projects as I can daily, and hope and pray that many other Christians are praying for these things daily too.

In His Service,
Linda Knapp”

“GET A LOAD OF THIS” DEPARTMENT

Thanks to John Hanna for making his “Global Glimpses” available to us! Yesterday, he relayed…, “Global Glimpse: Since the Gulf war, 500,000 Bibles and Scripture portions have been imported into Iraq, and Baghdad is allowing limited numbers of Bibles and Christian children’s books to be printed there. Expanding religious freedom in Iraq has allowed the Jesus film to be broadcast in Arabic over Iraqi national television and in Kurdish over northern Iraq television.

2 ENVISION ’96 “PACE” CHURCHES ALREADY FORMING NETWORKS

Thanks to the initiative of some of their respective church leaders, at least two Envision ’96 PACE churches (2 out of 155) are already demonstrating enough initiative to suggest that God is about to do something very wonderful during this project. Over 50 users have already subscribed to find out more about that this initiative. HAVE YOU SEEN ATLAS GIS?

Are you a map-fanatic??? You need Atlas GIS. You can buy it directly from Global Mapping for $199.95, configured for Windows 3.1. Draws maps for states, countries, regions, … the works. For another $199.95, you can get GMI’s Global Mission Base Map CD, version 1.1. This gives you tons of extra data to play with, including some really cool custom work GMI has done. Atlas isn’t necessarily an easy program to learn, but once we get it going, it’ll be really handy to read in all these data that John Gilbert and GMI and others are preparing. To reach GMI, call (in the USA) 800-569-6312; FAX 719-548-7459. (By the way, they didn’t ask me to mention them, and I don’t get a cut. )
--------------------------------------

RUSSIAN FONTS, DRIVERS, PROOFING TOOLS, OCR, TRANSLATION, ETC.

If you’re into Russian (instead of maps ), call (in the USA) 1-800-256-4814 (or fax 714-552-1699) and ask for a catalogue from Smartlink. These guys are great. They can help your computer become a Russian workhorse — typing Russian, reading Russian (via a scanner and optical character recognition software), spell-check Russian, translate Russian (hey — even if it only automates about 50-80% of the process, think of the sheer time that’ll save! !!), and teach Russian. (We don’t get a cut, and they didn’t ask us to advertise them.)

HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN SINCE YOU DARED A CHURCH TO TAKE A CHALLENGE?

[soapbox mode on] [disclaimer tag on] Keep in mind, we’re still early on in this Envision ’96 thing. So it’s too early to predict with certainty how things are going. [disclaimer tag off] But one thing’s for sure. These church leaders were ready to be challenged. Imagine getting leaders together from 200 churches and asking them to each consider taking responsibility for starting a multiplying church movement in one of the 100 Gateway Cities or some least evangelized people group from the list that Luis Bush and Ron Rowland and others are preparing. I figured we’d be lucky to have five (5) sets of church leaders who would even come to such a luncheon, let alone listen! Instead, we reach our goal of having 200 show up to hear the presentation! So we ask them to complete a Response sheet and we’re interested in all the commitments we’ve numbered 1-10, but numbers 4 and 6 are key. The exact wording was:

“4) Commit — It is my personal vision to see our congregation commit to planting a vibrant new church in a “piece of least reached world.” We want to help with a “piece of the wall!” As God gives me strength, I commit to allowing His power to work within me to bring this to reality.” and…
“6) Count me in! I’ll do everything I can to help our church decide to join the Envision ’96’s PACE effort!” (PACE is the project name)

Now imagine, again… I figured we’d be super lucky to have 5 sets of leaders say yes… but gang, 3 out of 4 sets of leaders checked either #4 or #6 or both! I mean… wow! WOW! Imagine if each of us went out and dared a congregation… or congregations(!) to tackle this. Now maybe 155 churches won’t end up with an on-site team in 3 years.. Okay. Bring me back to reality. But the intention is there. These churches were ready to be challenged.

I think we’re seeing the Spirit of God move upon our globe. All the prayers have not been in vain. God is moving people to care and respond for the sake of the least evangelized people of the world. Now we need the Sauls and Barnabases who will encourage them onward to pick up the flagpole and raise it high!

[soapbox mode off]

LEADERS FROM 152 CHURCHES SAY “COUNT ME IN!” ON ENVISION ’96 “PACE”

This past Monday, leaders from 152 different congregations of non-denominational churches of Christ and Christian churches said, “It is my personal vision to see my congregation accept responsibility for a ‘piece of the least reached world'”! About 800 leaders from just over 200 congregations were present. Three out of four chose to sign on with the Envision ’96 “PACE” project, in which leaders will trust God to empower them to

Pray,
Activate their church in missions at all levels,
Commit to planting a vibrant new church among some least reached city or people group,
Enlist the help of other congregations to be involved in this project or others.

Next step is a mailing to the church leaders within the next 10 days, thanking them for signing on, confirming their intent, and explaining 4 possible models for pursuing their goals. Under the “Set the Pace” Guidebook plans, the leaders would first invest these next 30 days in prayer prior to approaching others in their congregations in an attempt to mobilize them to join in. All 152 churches would participate in the “Praying Through the Window II” campaign during October. They wouldn’t actually choose their people group or city until early December, after a month of focused prayer toward the city or group recommended by church leadership the first of Nov. Envision ’96 leadership met all day yesterday trying to plan “next steps” and follow-up. About 30 “facilitators” will be appointed and trained for catalyzing five churches respectively. Each new PACE church will be asked to begin a Brigada conference for its respective least reached people or city. Thereby , when newcomers join Brigada, they’ll be able to find out which groups have already been engaged by an adopting church and/or agency. In this way, each city or group will have a kind of “billboard” or pointer, so that information will be available for majority world peoples (to encourage networking) and other Western churches as well. For more information, join brigada-projects-envision96 for regular updates via the Thursday mailing, “Points of Departure”. And please join us in praying that these leaders (some preachers, some missions committee chairpeople, and some active members) will be able to multiply their vision into the hearts and lives of others in their churches.

ANTICIPATION GROWS AS PRAYER PROFILES BECOME REALITY

Many are excited to see the completion of a couple of hundred prayer profiles which describe respective people groups which live within the 100 Gateway Cities. This group of profiles is being prepared by volunteers associated with Bill and Amy Stearns. Once they’re completed, announcements will be placed here as to how to access them electronically.

TOOL OF THE WEEK

Want to get a list of the individuals on your conference? Just send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)  , fill in the subject with whatever you want, then enclose two words in the body of the message:
who brigada

In a few minutes, the hub computer will send you back a complete list of your co-conference participants! If you’re a member of another Brigada conference, just substitute that conference’s name for Brigada.

--------------------------------------

IN THAT CASE…

Does case matter? (Upper case vs. lower case?) Only on file names when you issue a “get” command. You need not worry about case when filling in the address of a Brigada conference.

PRAYERS ANSWERED (UPDATE ON LAST WEEK’S LUIS BUSH REQUEST)

Last week, we included a prayer request by Luis Bush regarding Love South Africa. Now, this week, we can already report prayers answered! Luis writes… “Hello friends. Several days I ago I requested your prayers for what was taking place here in South Africa. I believe God has answered beyond any expectations.

I believe the spirit coming out of GCOWE in the hearts and lives of the 66 South Africans who lived on and perhaps were even enhanced in LSA 95. The spirit was an extension of the GCOWE 95 spirit and the implications of the plans that have been set in motion I believe are enormously significant for Africa, the least evangelized peoples, the 10/40 Window and AD 2000.

Luis”

We’ve place the full text of Luis reply (around 12 pages) in the Brigada file storage area. To get Luis’ response, send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line in the body of the message:

WATCH FOR MISSION FRONTIERS’ JULY ISSUE

Thanks to Rick Wood, who has placed a full page on Brigada in his July issue of Mission Frontiers, the newspaper/magazine sent out monthly to over 100,000 people around the world. The article, originally by Debra Wood and printed in a slightly different form in the GCOWE Today journal in Seoul, explains subscription instructions and gives annotated information on several Brigada conferences. Thanks Rick!

UPDATE ON ENVISION ’96

Monday, in Indianapolis, IN, some 1000 leaders will gather, representing approximately 200 different Christian churches and churches of Christ congregations from around the world. They’re being called together with the hopes of finding congregations who will each accept responsibility for a “piece of the unevangelized world.” The video, Light the Window, is a centerpiece in the 90-minute program, but also included are live testimonies from “case study” churches that have participated in prototype projects throughout the past 12 months. If planners’ prayers are answered, maybe 5, maybe 10 (maybe more?) will “adopt” least evangelized regions, cities, or people groups. Caleb Project President Greg Fritz and colleague Steve …are among the honored guests. Envision ’96 hopes to channel participating churches through Caleb Project’s “Research Expedition” channel in the hopes of securing additional mobilization, strategy, and prayer assistance. For more updates, join the Envision ’96 conference on Brigada by sending email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line in the body of the message:

PROGRESS ON RESEARCHING THE LEAST REACHED

I’m still seeing mail pass by my desk regarding the fine-tuning of the list of 2500 least reached peoples. You’ll recall that this list was first distributed at GCOWE in Seoul as a “first draft”. Now, it appears researchers and leaders are making progress in the quest of refining and detailing the list of least reached. If all goes well, we might see a more definite list within the next 30 days — and prayer profiles begin to flow shortly thereafter. When prayer profiles are finally produced, mission researchers, mobilizers, and on-site workers will have new material to share with supporters, friends, and prayer warriors. And the eventual hope, of course, is that teams of on-site workers will be sent to plant vibrant new fellowships of believers among the peoples in those lands. You can assist this work today by taking a moment to pray for those who are helping move these decisions forward. God will hear and I’m confident He will answer your prayers.

TO GET “BACK-ISSUES” OF BRIGADA TODAY

Are you a recent subscriber? You can get previous editions of this weekly mailing at no extra charge. Although Brigada “officially” opened its doors on March 21, 1995, there were several who participated in a month of “beta mailings” throughout the month previous to this formal opening. You can get mailings all the back to February 18, ’95, when there were only 38 people involved in the top level of Brigada! All these back issues are archived in the Brigada file area. To see a list of files there, send a message to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line of text in the body of the message:
filelist brigada

OR check out the list here on our Web server: Brigada Today

Pick out the back-issue you’re seeking and send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with the following line (assuming you wanted the back issue named brigada-today.950218 and that you were also wanting to learn where we got the name, “Brigada”):
get brigada brigada-today.950218
get brigada why-the-name-"brigada".txt

From the Idea Department: When a new Brigada Today comes, transfer it to a unique “folder” within your email client’s filing cabinet, or, as an alternative, select and “clip” it to the clipboard and transfer the issue to a file in your word processor. Either way (if your email client allows for searching for a particular piece of text), you can then do “needle-in-a- haystack” searches to dig up the source for that special video, or that email address for more information on that prayer resource. Save your back issues… or maybe go back and get them one at a time every so often and start a Brigada file cabinet on your laptop!

HAVE YOU BACKED UP YOUR COMPUTER TODAY?

Seriously, our computer here was hit with a serious hardware failure last week, causing us to see that dastardly message, “Hard disk boot record invalid.” The good news is that we were backing up every Friday night. The bad news is that it happened on Friday at 4pm! The company supplied a new hard drive. We restored everything . . . except the past 7 days! :-( So now we’re backing up every night! [soapbox mode on] A word to the wise: hardware failure is inevitable. It will happen, sooner or later. It’s not a matter of “if” – – it’s a matter of “when”. If you’ve got even 8 hours of work on your computer that you don’t want to have to recreate, back it up. [soapbox mode off]

JOIN US IN CELEBRATING JENNA’S RECOVERY!

Thanks to all who prayed for Jenna Otis, daughter of Sentinel Group’s George Otis. As you’ll recall, Jenna was found on the bottom of a swimming pool on July 3, in critical condition. She wasn’t breathing and had turned totally purple. They began CPR but didn’t hold out much hope. However, at the hospital — as people around the world began praying — she began recovering quickly. Moments ago , I spoke with one of George’s co-workers at Sentinel Group in Lynnwood, WA and he confirmed that now MRI and Catscan tests show not even a speck of brain damage. In fact, she’s not only up, walking and talking, but is now scheduled for release today and is probably already home!!! Hey — please do me another favor and pause just now to thank God for His power in answer our prayers.

SPECIAL PRAYER REQUEST FROM LUIS BUSH, INT’L DIRECTOR OF AD2000 & BEYOND

This past week (July 4), we received this prayer request from Luis Bush, Int’l Director of the AD 2000. Please lift it up… and look at the model that LSA countries are putting together! Also, note the news of another international conference on the near horizon:

“These are unusual days in South Africa. After twenty years out of any official sports competition South Africa not only participated in but hosted the Rugby World Cup last month. People came from an estimated countries of the world. However, not only did they participate and host in the World Cup they won the world cup. South African president Nelson Mandela put on the World Champs rugby shirt of the chief scorer. Blacks, whites and coloreds displayed a oneness without historical precedent. What has been a country divided had become a country united.

“However, unity is not only being displayed around the vision of rugby, Christians in South Africa are rapidly unifying around the vision of South Africa as a country committed to world evangelization. The events of this week more than confirmed this in my own mind. My wife Doris and I have the joy of being here for this special occasion.

“This morning I met with the leader of this week’s conference, Willie Crew. We discussed some wonderful expectations for the future out of South Africa. He meets with his executive committee tomorrow and believes that this will be confirmed. Please be in prayer for God’s anointing on all the activities of this week, for Willie, the core staff, the volunteers and for God’s leading as the executive committee meets tomorrow to consider the possibilities for 1997. Please pray for me, that I might communicate God’s heart and His mind. I am scheduled to speak 14 times the remainder of this week.

“Over six thousand are expected to gather in Pretoria for Love South Africa* [(see note below)] ’95 (double the number last year). A city march through Pretoria is planned for Saturday. 10,000 are expected. Over 2000 will be leaving the conference to fan out throughout neighboring countries to carry the life transforming message of Jesus Christ for three weeks.

“…The executive committee meets tomorrow July 5th [to decide] as to whether to host GCOWE ’97, a gathering expected to include some 1000 international leaders from some 100 countries of the world. Hosting will involving paying for internal costs of food and housing and transportation in South Africa.

The executive committee will consider gathering of a total of over 100,000 students in two stadiums; one in Cape Town (50,000) and one in the capital of Pretoria (50,000) to challenge them to world evangelization.

The executive committee will consider a prayer walk at the Southern tip of Africa where the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic ocean come together to pray for the continent of Africa and the continent of South Asia.

Participants would be encouraged to mobilize teams and churches for October 1997 Praying Through the Window III to send on-site teams to each of the 2500 or so significantly large (over 10,000 individuals) least evangelized peoples of the world to involve at least one team to every people (2000 teams) and at least 30 million Christians around the world.

The executive committee will consider to hold a special AD 2000 & Beyond Movement sponsored gathering of an estimated 200 to 300 mission agency executives from around the world who will be presented the information on the 2500 or so significantly large (over 10,000 individuals) least evangelized peoples of the world to discuss how these can have a church planting movement initiated by December 31, 2000.

The strategy meetings would be held in the capital of Pretoria, near Johannesburg. International participants would then be transported by overnight train to Capetown (called by some–the most beautiful city on earth) for a time of inspiration, a prayer walk, and a gathering for the mobilization of students.

By the year 2000 LSA are expecting that each of the 24 African countries south of the Equator will have their own conference. They are setting the pace for planning of an AD 2000 Day of Celebration for who Jesus is and what He has done in building His church among every people in Southern Africa and link together with them by satellite. In other continents a similar continent and global satellite link up is anticipated.

What is Love Southern Africa (LSA)?

LSA is a seven year strategy, begun in 1993, to determine who are the unreached or least reached in southern Africa and to give them the opportunity to respond to the gospel of Jesus Christ by the year 2000. Part of a worldwide movement committed to completing the task of world evangelization by the year 2000 (the AD 2000 & Beyond Movement), LSA was birthed when God gathered a group of South African missions leaders into relationship.
