LAUNCH IS LAUNCHED!

No doubt about it — it’s shaping up to be one of the most action-packed meetings in consultation history. This is one where the emphasis is on “what are we going to do” rather than “what are we going to talk about.” For full details, send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following lines in the body of the message text:

Today is Day Four and it’s “open season” on unresolved issues. To summarize, the AD2000 & Beyond Movement is calling us out to a pair of awesome objectives:
a) to mobilize national initiatives to finish the task in our own countries, especially as it relates to making sure there is at least a growing, reproducing church in each of the remaining least evangelized people groups in our midst; and
b) to work together to make it a priority to bring into being a church planting movement in each of the 1685 least evangelized peoples remaining on our globe, as determined by the researchers working in concert with the AD2000 & Beyond Assessment Task Force, the Unreached Peoples Track, and the Peoples Information Network.

Throughout these last three days, two dozen task forces and networks have studied in breakout groups, then reported to main sessions on how they might contribute to these two major prongs. Including staff and volunteers, approximately 300 delegates from around 70+ countries are present (with representatives from another 20 countries wishing they could have come). Highlights??? Too numerous to mention. Get the files. Outcomes??? Tremendous efforts to mobilize entire regions toward finishing the task. Action. Strategies. New partnerships. This one is one for the books. For the next five years, we’ll be carrying out the plans introduced here in Colorado Springs during these last 48 hours!

CROSSCONNECT TO GET NEW NAME!

Yup… you heard right. Once MAF took on the responsibility of CrossConnect, one of the first things they checked was how to register the name properly, once and for all and guess what — the name belonged to someone else already! So as of January 1, Brigada will be carried aboard “MAFxc”. Neither the domain nor any of the services will change… only “the name has been changed to protect the innocent”, so to speak. They’ll pronounce the word, MAF, rather than spell it (with an “a” as in map), then just say the letters “xc” behind it. The xc will be in lower case by design, with MAF in upper.
--------------------------------------

PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW – SEEING THE RESULTS MORE CLEARLY

When Beverly Pegues stood up to report, the entire room of nearly 250+ delegates (plus volunteers and staff) sat on the edge of their seats. And they weren’t disappointed. Beverly is head of the Christian Information Network, based here in Colorado Springs, which served as the hub of information gathering for the Praying Through the Window II — Praying for the 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window. Sponsored by the United Prayer Track of the AD2000 & Beyond Movement, the campaign appears to have been a huge success at mobilizing not only prayer, but prayer journeys into the 100 Gateway Cities. Beverly reported that it looks very likely that 30 million believers participated during the month of October (and she also said some are still praying!). Keep in mind that reports are still coming in (if you took a prayer journey, she wants to hear from you!). Just yesterday, the last 6000 letters (out of some 25,000 personal pieces — trying making that your Christmas Card list!!!) went out asking for feedback. As soon as she gets answers, she’ll publish them, probably in another book (like the 1993 campaign’s Window Watchman). So far, she’s verified that 110,632 churches participated in the event (with 90,000 of them from Brazil alone????), with 405 teams taking actual prayer journeys. Since some visted more than one Gateway City in more than one country, 644 different “journeys” were actually completed by those 405 teams (if you count a visit to each Gateway City as a different “journey”). Churches in 166 nations took part in prayer, having purchased some 10,000 copies of Light the Window and some 34,000 copies of the book, Praying Through the 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window. The book ended up being translated into Spanish, Chinese, Afrikaans, Korean, German, and, of course, English. Wow. All of us in the Brigada network of families should say thanks to Beverly, her staff, the entire United Prayer Track, and the whole AD2000 & Beyond Movement leadership for helping organize and administrate what ended up being a huge project. (Michael Little, Chairman of the overseeing committee, wonders if maybe the little 8 1/2 x 14 inch prayer calendar became the most photocopied document in 1995! :-) ) But — since Beverly and her staff have more to do than open our thank you notes, let’s all say a big thank you together via this Brigada Today (she’s a faithful reader!), so everyone point your head toward Colorado Springs (not necessarily in the direction of Mecca for this one, folks), and say ‘thank you’ out loud to Beverly! [Could you hear that Bev? That’s nearly 1500 Brigada participants — and we’re thankful for you.] Now let’s pause a moment to pray for God’s continued guidance and provision for her, her big staff (of two people :-) ), and her volunteers (wonderful people) at New Life Church. Let’s pray especially hard for them, because beginning yesterday, the people at this “Launch” meeting began planning “Praying Through the Window III” in 1997!!!! [I think I just heard a big “gulp” from Bev’s office! :-) ] Praying Through the Window III will focus on the Least Evangelized Peoples of the world, with special emphasis on those originating in the 10/40 Window — but living wherever they live in the world (maybe in the neighborhood next door!).

GLOBAL EVANGELIZATION MOV’T VOLUNTEER’S SERVICES TO BRIGADA READERS

Most of us have heard of or studied David Barrett’s World Christian Encyclopedia, which, though now sadly in need of revision, is acclaimed by some to be the most thorough and most accurate reckoning of global Christianity in modern history. But some may not know that Barrett offers additional resources on a regular basis. We interviewed Justin Long JDavidLongatAOLdotCOM  (JDavidLongatAOLdotCOM)   , who works as Dir. of Communication and Development for Dr. David Barrett’s organization, the Global Evangelization Movement, and learned more about GEM’s potential contribution to Brigada‘s readers.

BT: How can readers get past issues of your AD 2000 Global Monitor?
GEM: “For … the past 40 issues of GEM’s AD 2000 Global Monitor, they are available from us at $9/book. This includes 120 pages of monitoring world evangelization from 1990-1994, and includes an electronic index (.DBF and .TXT formats) to the book for quick searches. Within the issues are the Top 211 Least Evangelized Megapeoples, and many other statistics on world evangelization.”

BT: What about keeping up on an ongoing basis?
GEM: The AD 2000 Global Monitor … has changed to the AD 2025 Global Monitor with issue no. 41 (because AD 2000 is too close for really meaningful monitoring). It is available on an 8-page newsletter edited by Dr. David Barrett published on a bi-monthly basis by GEM. Cost is $20/year.

BT: Where should we go for a one-stop shopping book for world stats?
GEM: Check out the book, “Our Globe & How To Reach It.” It’s available from New Hope Press in Birmingham, Al., and from our office (while our supplies last). Cost is $6.95 + $5 shipping & handling for USA orders (others please email JDavidLongatAOLdotCOM  (JDavidLongatAOLdotCOM)   for precise pricing). If you’d rather phone, try (804) 355-1646 or if you want dead, slippery paper, fax (804) 355-2016.

JOSHUA PROJECT TABLES ON THE WEB

Bob (our WWW magician) has recently finished organizing the AD2000 & Beyond Least Evangelized Peoples List on the WWW. See the Brigada homepage at http://www.xc.org/brigada/brigada.html and click on tools for Reaching the Unreached. You can also download the list by email commands to the hub, as mentioned previously in Brigada.

ASK PAUL FOR A DATE!

Thanks to Paul Filidis for making available a resource for next year…. now. His organization, YWAM Publishing, can provide an illustrated, spiral-bound personal organizer (used successfully by tens of thousands) as a unique combination of a practical daily planner with devotional aids, as well as a richly informative Great Commission primer with people profiles. It also contains maps, prayer guides, daily Bible reading plan and weekly and monthly planning spreads. For now, he’s offering it to Brigada readers for U.S. $9.09 (the regular price is $12.99!). For specifics, write him at wcnatxcdotorg or call 1(719)442-6409 or Fax 1(719)380-0936 E-mail: wcnatxcdotorg  (wcnatxcdotorg)   . NEPAL BREAKS FORTH IN SONG

In a new video documentary, Nepali Church leaders relate the story of their unique, self-evangelized Church. Forty years of persecution dissolved in 1990 when new democratic freedoms led to incredible growth as the enduring faith of Nepali Christians, despite persecution, witnessed to the power of Jesus Christ. When social taboos and legal restrictions lifted Nepalis openly sought out the Gospel. This is an ideal tool for groups interested in reaching people with the Gospel and how the Lord is at work around the world. AIMS SPONSORS “PENETRATING THE 10/40 WINDOW”

AIMS (Association of International Missions Services) and Regent University are co-sponsoring on March 10-13, 1996, a conference called Penetrating the 10/40 Window. George Otis, Jr., author of The Last of the Giants will be the principle speaker. The conference will be held on the campus of Regent University in Virginia Beach, VA. Sounds like an excellent chance for networking. In addition there will be tracks designed to help build alliances between churches, agencies and Great Commission Christians in seven areas of Unreached Peoples. They are the Tibetan Buddhist world, China, Indonesia, India, Uzbekistan, Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam), and Fourth World Peoples (drug addicts, prostitutes, street children). Write Nathan nathcraatbeacondotregentdotedu  (nathcraatbeacondotregentdotedu)   for more info. or call him at (804)-579-4525.

“COMMANDS TO HUB”

Have you seen this phrase? If so, you’ve probably slipped and sent a “command” (like “subscribe” or “get”) to a conference (instead of to hubatxcdotorg). Please get in the habit of checking your “command” messages, just before sending them, to make sure you’re sending them exclusively to the hub address. If you mail a message containing commands to a conference address (like Brigada-peoplesatxcdotorg), all you’ll get is a lot of replies from fellow conference participants suggesting you send your message to the hub! :-)

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM THE MIDDLE EAST

It began 12 months ago when a man asked the local Islamic leader (sheikh) for permission to set up a tent and speak about Jesus Christ. The sheikh answered “That is a very good idea! Our Muslims are bad Muslims. We need to hear more about the prophet Jesus.” Later, the region’s head of all sheikhs and Imams (Muslim priests) gave permission to show the Jesus film in the local mosques. Durring 7 months, around 1,000 Muslims converted to Christianity, and at least 300 now regularly attend house-churches….

“DAG” TO THE DOCTOR! CROSSCONNECT EXPLAINS HUB DIFFICULTIES

This past week, CrossConnect leadership sent out apologies for the recent and tremendous slow-downs in email traffic across their key hub, affectionately known among CrossConnect insiders as “DAG”. Why did the slowdown occur? According to the announcement, delivered to all paid CrossConnect subscribers (those with XC.org addresses), “In essence the sheer volume of email (sending out 30000 messages per day or more), and especially conferencing email, on our hub, led to the machine slowing down almost to a standstill because of a large number of email messages queued at one time.” Obviously, CrossConnect wants to continue to be of service to the missions community — and to conference families like Brigada. So what kinds of steps is parent organization MAF taking to prevent these slowdowns and glitches in the future? “A new, faster hub machine with more than twice the disk space has already been purchased,” wrote Jonathan Marsden, CrossConnect’s Senior Technician. “It is hoped to have this in service by the end of 1995. The current hub will then be used as a backup hub. Additional technical and customer support staff are also being recruited.” So never fear . . . Cross connect is here to stay. And thanks for your patience during the slow-down! [During the downtime, CrossConnect respectfully asked that, if at all possible, we not mail a Brigada Today last Friday. This missing issue is the first Friday missed since Brigada opened this past March 21st! Thanks to MAF and its leadership for taking the slow-down seriously!!! Within hours, they had flown a tech to the hub site in Columbus, Ohio. Thanks to their fast and caring response, the downtime was limited and very brief.]

PRAY FOR “THE LAUNCH”

Beginning next Tuesday (Nov. 28 – Dec. 2), AD2000 & Beyond mission leaders will gather in Colorado Springs to consider, pray for, and facilitate the beginnings of church planting movements among some 1685 people groups by Dec. 31, 2000. For those interested in daily updates from on-site in Colorado, send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line in the body of the message text:

Although this conference was originally designed for use at GCOWE ’95 in Seoul, we’ll be using it for daily reports on events and announcements at “The Launch”, beginning this coming Monday.

BETHANY SAYS THANKS FOR THOSE PITCHING IN!

Gabriella Araya wrote this past week to say thanks for those who had volunteered to help prepare people/prayer profiles for the Joshua Project. Thanks to everyone in the Brigada family for pitching in. By the way, I suspect she still wouldn’t turn you away. . . 102132dot52atcompuservedotcom  (102132dot52atcompuservedotcom)   if you can help!

GET YOUR COMPUTER EQUIPMENT BUT GET IT AT THE RIGHT ADDRESS!

:-) Just after mailing the last Brigada Today, Ray Holt wrote to correct his address from [RayMHoltatixdotnetdotcom] to his true address which is RayMHoltatixdotnetcomdotcom  (RayMHoltatixdotnetcomdotcom)   . Once again, Ray helps Brigada participants get computer equipment and software at cost + 10%. If you tried and were “rejected”, try again at the real address!
--------------------------------------

PEOPLE OF THE WEEK

Thanks to Justin Long (again) for asking, “Let’s pray for the Bangri of India, also known as the Deswali or Hariani. With 5.7 million members, they are less than 1.6% Christian and less than 25% evangelized. They have no resources, and few mission agencies and churches are at work among them. Over 4 million have yet to hear the Gospel. Let’s pray for a translation of the JESUS film and the Bible in their heart language!” Thanks again Justin!

ON THE HEALS OF THE “GOOD TIMES” HOAX COMES “AOL GOLD”

FOR REAL! — If you’ve received a few bulletins on “Good Times”, a “hoax” virus being submitted on America Online, you’ll be happy to know it’s just a trick, probably designed by fiber optics sales people to sell more cable for INTERNET bandwidth! However, this past week, the Wall Street Journal carried a report re: AOL’s newest virus . . . “AOL Gold”. This time it seems for real!!! The virus comes packed as an attachment to a normal email . . . so, bottom line, if you get email from someone with “AOL Gold” written in the subject line or as an attachment, skip it . . . It’s definitely a loser! It renders your hard drive useless! Since viruses like this are only going to become more and more common, we owe it to each other to practice safe computing! :-) Get some virus software and use it on each and every executable file (*.bat, *.com, *.sys, and *.exe) that you download from the INTERNET and check every diskette no matter how harmless it appears. Don’t take chances. Otherwise, eventually we could all suffer!

THE REAL WAY TO SUBSCRIBE TO BRIGADA-PEOPLES . . .

If you want to learn about people groups and the people reaching them, you’ll want to subscribe to Brigada-peoples . . . but don’t forget the hyphen! An earlier paragraph (HAVE YOU HEARD . . . [from the Nov. 3 edition]) contained a mistake in the sign-up instructions. The proper approach is to send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line in the body of the message text:

The earlier message is missing the hyphen!

PEOPLE OF THE WEEK

Thanks to Justin Long JDavidLongataoldotcom  (JDavidLongataoldotcom)   for the “People of the Week”! “Let’s pray for the 41 million Turks in Turkey. They are a borderline World A people — nearly half evangelized. There are many efforts focusing on them resources directed among them. The Turks have a JESUS film, numerous mission agencies and denominations, and a substantial awareness of Christianity. In October, one church conducted a major outreach among them and saw several converts. Nevertheless, the Turks remain less than 1% Christian.”

SET YOUR HEART ON “HEARTLAND!”

Those interested in short-term missions, long-term opportunities, as well as sending others, will want to attend the next Heartland MissionsFest, February 15-17, 1996, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. “Last year’s drew 1,400 participants from 95 agencies, 12 states, nine schools and over 100 churches, including Baptists, Charismatics, Lutherans, Methodist, Pentecostals and Presbyterians,” wrote co-organizer John McVay hmfatxcdotorg  (hmfatxcdotorg)   . “Designed to inform, inspire and involve those interested in career missions, short-term missions trips or sending others, the three-day conference includes a variety of workshops targeted toward individual interests. Sessions include Steps to the Field, Support-raising, Cross-cultural Communications, International Business, Medical missions and Missions Strategies. Participants can learn from 50 workshops and 100 missions agency exhibits. In addition to the primary speakers, several local, regional, national and international speakers and exhibitors will be present.”

GLOBAL GLIMPSE

“In Central Asia, God is using a former KGB member to build His Church. Once part of an organization which persecuted the Church, today he is leading the way in discipling new believers of a Muslim unreached people group in a former Soviet Republic. His past experience is of great value to both national Christians and workers from the West in knowing how to go about ministry there. Together, both national believers and expatriate workers are teaming up to see the Gospel spread in this Central Asian republic.”
Thanks to John Hanna for this week’s Global Glimpse.

NEW RESOURCE ON UNDERSTANDING ARABS

Interested in Arabs and their homelands??? Don’t miss “The Real Story: A Christian’s Guide To The Arab World,” a brand-new six-part Video series with a comprehensive Study Guide. It will counter stereotypes of the Middle East, and give us a heart for Arab Muslims. According to Paul Filidis, who works with YWAM Communications, “Each of the six programs is under 20 minutes in length, ideal for individuals, Small Group Bible Studies, Adult Sunday School Classes, Conferences or Missions Emphasis Weeks. Dr. Dudley Woodberry of Fuller Seminary says: “[This Video] should be in every church and Christian College Resource Center.” Produced by Vision 3 Productions, the cost is U.S. $79.95.
For more information, call (719) 442-6409 or fax: 1 (719) 380-0936 — or simplest of all, e-mail to wcnatxcdotorg  (wcnatxcdotorg)   .

NEED TRAINING FOR SHORT-TERM MISSIONS?

. . . then don’t miss Miami ’96 in Orlando! (Maybe they outgrew Miami??? :-) ) According to co-organizer Bill Stearns, “The Friday evening through Sunday afternoon training conference features workshops, general sessions and networking with everybody who’s involved in North American short-term ministry.” The program runs Jan. 26-28 (’96). For more info., call Mark at 305/754-9541 or write “Miami ’96”, 602 NE 96th St., Miami FL 33138.

GLOBAL MAPPING MAKES SPECIAL OFFER TO BRIGADA READERS

Thanks to Harold Britton and the folks at Global Mapping! Having seen Brigada‘s readers’ commitment to praying for the 100 Gateway Cities (by way of receiving hundreds of 100 Gateway Cities map orders recently), they have recognized the 1300+ readers of Brigada as a unique family of serious co-workers deserving special consideration for such projects. As a result, they have offered their brand new “20:21 Library of Mission and Evangelism Resources on CD-ROM for Windows” to Brigada participants at significantly reduced pricing. To find out more, send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line in the body of the message text:

We’re talkin’ about a savings of hundreds of dollars, folks.

HAVING TROUBLE “GETTING” THE JOSHUA PROJECT 2000 LIST?

At least one Brigada participant (using a different email client than we have here) had trouble with the size of the 2 files containing the Joshua Project 2000 List. As a result, we’ve now broken that list into four parts instead of two. Last week, we wrote that you’d have to include two lines in your request… but now you’ll need four. Just send the following 4 lines to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)

get brigada joshua-list-a
get brigada joshua-list-b
get brigada joshua-list-c
get brigada joshua-list-d

By the way, file
“a” contains countries beginning with the letters a-e;
“b” contains those beginning with f-i;
“c” contains j-p; and
“d” contains the remainder of the list.

In this way, if you were primarily interested in one country in particular, you could just instruct the hub to send you the precise segment you need. Remember, the list is presented in comma-delimited ascii and can be opened in any word processor, spreadsheet, or database program for analysis. If you retrieved the list last week, you need not retrieve it again. Even though the list has been repartitioned, no changes have been made in the list itself.

HELP WANTED: FOR RESEARCHING/WRITING AD2000 & BEYOND PEOPLE PROFILES

This past week, we heard from Gabriella Araya, who works with Rick Ward at the Bethany World Center. Bethany is the church that has agreed to coordinate the researching and writing of prayer profiles for the people groups found on the Joshua Project 2000 List. Imagine if it were your job to write up reports on 1685 peoples! Wouldn’t you appreciate some help??? So would Gabriella and the folks at Bethany. More specifically, Bethany is looking for

  1. those who might have pictures of people from these groups. Face shots, in particular, are needed to feature in each of the profiles. and prayer profiles.

  2. They also would appreciate any and all research material available. [gulp ] In particular, if you already have something written on a particular people group on the list, or know of someone who does, contact Bethany. Note that they already have the complete stack of relevant people profiles from the Adopt-a-People Clearinghouse.

  3. Finally, they need researchers/writers.

If you’d be willing to prepare a draft profile on one of the groups and you have access to resources that would allow you to do so, contact Gabriella at 102132dot52atcompuservedotcom  (102132dot52atcompuservedotcom)   or by calling 504-774-2000. We’ll all be glad you did!!!

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT “MISSIONWATCH

This one isn’t by Timex. It’s by Barrett, Long and company! The MissionWatch is a bi-weekly 5-page alert letter listing news and projects which affect the least evangelized peoples of the world (World A)
[Ed. Note: which for the most part contains people of the 10/40 Window].

Justin Long, Editor of the ‘Watch, writes that “The intent of the watch is to share new models, case studies and innovations between various ministries in the hopes that, by learning what others are doing to make themselves more efficient and successful in completing their mission, the reader can improve the efficiency of his own ministry as well.” An annual subscription to the MissionWatch/Go! is $25/year. For a sample issue, write to Justin Long JDavidLongatAOLdotCOM  (JDavidLongatAOLdotCOM)   . Note that Justin also places occasional blips from The MissionWatch on Brigada-peoples. PEOPLE OF THE WEEK

Thanks to Justin Long for this week’s “People of the Week”: “Let’s remember to pray for the Manchu of China: 10.5 million and less than 1% Christian. Most adhere to Chinese folk-religions and spiritist practices. Many are bilingual in Mandarin, but they are treated as conquered subjects by many Han Chinese and so have an aversion to the language. A handful of mission agencies are working among them, and some churches have been planted. Only about a third have heard the Gospel, leaving some seven and a half million untold.”

HOW DO YOU SPELL SECURITY?

Occasionally, we’re asked about the level of security we can provide on Brigada. Originally, with the formation of Brigada-Projects-Security, we were hoping to create air-tight, super-secure conferences for those in sensitive places. But after several months’ discussion among what I believe are some of the most knowledgeable people on the Net when it comes to security issues, we’ve drawn the conclusion that there really isn’t any practical security available right now [emphasis on the word practical]. The bottom line: Brigada users started using PGP on a regular basis, the future would look a lot brighter. But that possibility is not likely to happen anytime soon. At this point, after experimenting with it some this past month, I’ve concluded that for the average user, PGP will be just a tad strange and unexciting, especially in light of the misunderstandings we’ll fear it could cause! :-)

REMEMBER

“GOOD TIMES” IS NO GOOD TIME! — Remember, if you get a message about a supposed virus named, “Good Times”, just ignore it. It’s a hoax, probably designed by INTERNET service handlers to generate tons more traffic so you’ll owe them tons more money for sending all those warnings!!! :-)

GET “MAKE A DIFFERENCE” AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

“Make a Difference” is a four-hour seminar-in-a-box that trains mission activists how to mobilize their fellowship to new mission vision and put feet to their prayers for the 10/40 Window. GOT A CHURCH? WANT TO LET OTHERS KNOW?

If the answer is yes and yes, you just might want to let The Center for Great Commission Studies know about it! The Center is a research center in Wake Forest, NC, USA. It is a part of the Churches in Habitat Project of the Peoples Information Network (PIN). As part of this project it is seeking to build a database of every church in the world by at least its city, if not even more exact (security permitting). To accomplish this, it is seeking to obtain directories of churches from denominations, mission boards, councils, etc. If there are individuals or groups who can assist in this by sending these directories or listings (or other helpful information), it would be very appreciated. It can be sent electronically (preferred), by fax, or by post. Please include contact information. Send info. to

GLOBAL GLIMPSE

A Christian worker in the Middle East spent the past year building relationships with leaders of a Muslim minority group. He was invited to speak, but then a local TV station aired a slanderous expose of Christians, showing names and faces, including his own. However, the minority group viewed this as an attack on themselves, and requested him to speak anyway. He spoke to 200 people inside the mosque and several hundred more outside listening by speaker. Roughly 60% of his text was scripture, and afterward an estimated elder added his stamp of approval. Today this worker looks with anticipation at the harvest to come.
