DON’T FORGET TO RESERVE WALL SPACE!
You’ll need 3′ x 5’+!!! This thing is going to be BIG. I mean, for the moment, at least, forget about that color print of the soccer player from Successories. (It’ll break your wallet anyway.) We just received a draft copy (in full color) today at Brigada Today. “WOW” just doesn’t say it. We’re not supposed to say any more for now. Wow. Revolutionary.

————————————–

NEEDS AND OPPORTUNITIES!
Don’t forget to check into brigada-job-shop to find out about mission opportunities and needs around the world! For example, one recent inquirer was looking for individuals with skills in computers, administration, and sound/studio engineering, all to work in conjunction with translation and outreach to a Central Asian least evangelized people group. The funding arrangement for this particular opportunity? “Some support raising may be required with financial assistance from a partnership of churches at work among this people group.”

For this particular opportunity, the inquirer was “RUN”, P.O. Box 3312, Virginia Beach, VA 23454, tel: 804-416-1139; fax: 804-416- 1142, e-mail: 76171dot1463atcompuservedotcom.

But more are available on job-shop. To subscribe, send email to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the message:

(Note: Make sure you put the word “TOPICS” in upper case.) This file will come back in your email in-basket, listing the various messages posted and referencing on-line archive files that you can “get” in the same way you retrieved TOPICS. WE GET MAIL
Thanks to those who write to share testimonies and case studies. (We used to try to answer each and every one, but it’s beginning to be a little more tough these days; thanks for understanding that it’s really nothing personal! :-)) Especially interesting are the examples of the way readers are using Brigada Today and the tons of resources that many colleagues are developing these days. Here’s a recent note from a teacher in Missouri. Maybe his testimony will be encouraging to those developing today’s videos, books, and other resources. It might also give ideas to other teachers and leaders:

“March 23

Dear Doug: I am a recent subscriber to BRIGADA. I enjoy the short articles and pertinent information it contains.

I teach the missions track of our Christian instruction program at Christian Outreach School in Hillsboro, Missouri. This year we are spending the entire semester on the 10/40 Window and the need for us as Christians to have direct involvement through prayer, finances, and physical presence. We are using the “Praying Through the 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window” book at the start of class. When scripture memory test are given, the students are awarded an additional 5 bonus points if they can correctly identify the appropriate gateway cities for the day.

We are focusing in on the study of Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism as the three major religions of the 10/40 Window. Our primary source book has been _Tell it well — Communicating the Gospel Across Cultures_ written by John Seamands. I also received the conference chat regarding how best to reach Muslims provided by BRIGADA. Thanks.

The reason I am sharing this with you is I want you and the readers of BRIGADA to know that the lives of these rather indifferent Christian youth (at least indifferent at the beginning of the semester) are being transformed into globally aware minds of the future. Our class is exciting and is something the students look forward to coming to each session.

I guess that’s all I have to say for now. Just wanted to let you know that we are trying to make a difference in the lives of some very special people.

Blessings.

RANDY BUENDORF BALL World Missions Assistant Executive Director”

[end of Randy’s note]
Thanks Randy!! God bless you, your class, and all the others like you who are working side by side to rally forces for the last frontiers!

CREATIVE PLUS PLUS
Brian Tenny, of Creative Plus Photocrafters, Inc., says a big ‘thanks’ to all those who have asked for more information about color prayer cards featuring your picture (or that of your family). You can now write him directly on the Internet at cr8vplusatvnetdotnet to request a bounceback form message asking all the right questions to permit the folks at Creative Plus to make you look great in print! Thanks Brian! (If you get desperate and happen to live in the USA, you call also call toll-free at 1-800-347-2848.)

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM MALAYSIA
600 Christian churches have been started in this mostly Muslim country since 1992, according to a representative of Malaysia’s National Evangelical Fellowship. Twenty-two churches and organizations are involved in church planting there. Despite this rapid growth, there has been very little effect to date on the Muslim Malay majority.

WANT A LIST OF BRIGADA CONFERENCES?
Get it automatically by sending email to hubatxcdotorg with only the word “Conferences” in the body of the message text (without the quotes). (Note that there will be several non-brigada conferences listed as well.) Each conference will also be briefly described.

Want to see the files that are stored in your conferences file area? Just add the following line to the same message:
filelist brigada

Replace the word “brigada” with the conference in which you’re interested… are just use the command to see the files stored at the brigada “root” directory.

DID I EVER TELL YOU YOU’RE MY HERO?
My evenings for the past 2 weeks have been hectic. Christopher, our 9-year-old, asked me to upgrade my soccer coaching certification to the next higher level and the only class remaining this spring was being hosted in a town 90-minutes away. But the travel has given me lots of time to think. Somehow I got to thinking about some of the great goal-scoring I recall seeing. Have you ever watched a happy Brazilian or Italian striker immediately after scoring a power shot to the far post? Wow! The celebration is fantastic! The guy usually runs around back behind the goal, slides to his knees, raises his arms in ecstasy, and shouts war hoops to the crowd. I guess there’s something undeniably gratifying about doing something that an entire stadium full of people would rejoice about.

Then I thought about all the full-time field workers, laboring day in, day out, scoring daily spiritual victories. I was haunted by the images. You seldom get a chance to run behind a goal and slide to your knees. You don’t see confetti pouring down from the crowd. And probably few people give you standing ovations.

Yet, tell me which victory will be remembered the longest (I’m talkin’ hundreds of years here):
a) a widow in La Plata, alone in a hospital room, finally rests comfortably because “that nice man came and prayed” with her again…
or
b) some guy from Ireland heads in a ball in the 18th minute in the ’94 world cup.

Well, if you haven’t already guessed, I’m lobbying for “a”, because for eternity, it won’t be all about the great big public victories or even the famous sports hero salaries. But that one lady, or that broken-hearted widower, or that little girl with the birthmark, or the tiny boy with the missing tooth… those needs, those lives, those futures, they will last forever, in eternity….. And you, brushing shoulders with them in Sunday School, Bible study, or on that call — you are the one changing lives in the last frontiers.

So today, on-site workers, I salute you. I can’t email the crowds, I can’t fax the cheers or screams. But I can tell you that angels are rejoicing with tons more vigor in Heaven over the one soul that found out about Christ last through your ministry. You’re the hero in my book.
Doug

BRIGADA THIS YEAR!!!
Literally one year ago yesterday Brigada “opened its doors!” The goal? “… to create a forum, an “op center”, a tool-box that could pull together the people, the resources, and the networks to aid in completing the task of reaching specific cities and people groups with the love of Jesus Christ.” We weren’t the only network asking those questions… so God heard not only our own prayers but those of many others! They were like many streams flowing into what has become one powerful river (to use an analogy from the AD2000 & Beyond Movement) — and guess what! The river is rushing!!! Literally one year ago, we asked, “What if a congregation or individual wanted to actually go to one of these 100 Gateway Cities from the October, ’95 prayer emphasis? What if there were two, or three, or more? How would they ever meet? How could they pray for one another and share strategies, ideas, and joint plans — so that we won’t all have to duplicate effort and ‘reinvent the wheel’ during mobilization?” And guess what!!! Literally one year TO THE DAY, AD2000 & Beyond’s Int’ Office has come through with seemingly the primary fulfillment of that question (Don’t miss “AD2000 & BEYOND’S MOST EXCITING CONTRIBUTION YET!” below!). Have we accomplished our goal? Thanks to God’s power, we’re at least on our way!!! If you’re a “Perspectives” student today and you need info. on an unreached people, today you can drop a note to Brigada-peoples. You can check and see if a conference has already been established for your group. (See “LOOK WHO’S TALKIN’!” below.)

What can we expect from Brigada for the coming year??? We’re praying that more networks for specific least evangelized people groups will form up. We’ll have to face the ever-challenging security question (currently resolved only by recruiting human volunteers to serve as ‘filters’ by handling front-door mail in non-sensitive countries). We’re praying for all the more resources for seeing the world through “global” eyes. (For example, within the next 60 days there’s a very significant resource coming out that will help you see the world by people groups — but it’s all very “hush hush” until it’s ready for release. :-) So stay tuned and start clearing a 3 foot x 5 foot wall space somewhere in your office, study, family room, or kitchen!!! :-)

I wish we could email ice cream to you today… or at least cake. But alas, Bill Gates hasn’t quite gotten that worked out for us… YET! So instead, we’ve decided to forego the mess (who wants ice cream all over their phone jack anyway!)… the fancy celebration, . . . and in characteristic Brigada style, get back to work!!! :-) But please do join us in prayer just now… and ask God…

“Dear Lord, thank you for the people of Brigada. Thanks for their cooperative spirits! Most everyone has switched on their email networks in spite of already busy schedules… with the sole purpose of trying to further the cause of worldwide evangelization. Assist them with their time management. Bring them closer to fulfillment of their individual visions of reaching the peoples of the world. And enable them to serve with boldness while they love and care for their families! Give us wisdom, skill and resourcing for additional “discoveries” and tools online, so we can continue to work more and more closely together, with less and less waste and duplication. Help us to find the information we need, and the people to whom you would lead us… and when you do, we’ll give you the glory. Thanks for the promise of spring, your resurrection, and the rest of 1996! Thanks for making a way for us for the future! And thanks for your great wisdom and holiness. We place our total lives in your hands! We are yours! Take us and use us for your will and your kingdom!!!”

————————————–

LOOK WHO’S TALKIN’!
One of our ideas for this anniversary issue was to list all the Brigada conferences and say a word about each. But then we remembered that you can do that automatically, if you choose, with the command “conferences”! The result is a little Brigada “chart” with all the conferences and their purposes — little one-line descriptions to help you get a better handle on “the big picture” and how each conference fits in. So if you want to zero in on the 45+ conferences in the Brigada family… as well as the many other email conferences hosted by MAFxc, just send email to hubatxcdotorg with only the word, “conferences”, in the text of the message (without the quotes). The hub computer will take care of the rest. When Brigada formed up a year ago, there was one and only one conference… and MAFxc (or CrossConnect, as it was known then) had 100 or so other email groups. Now there are scads !!! And by the way, if you’d like to see the people of Brigada, send the word “who” (without quotes) in the message above, on the second line. But be ready for a list of 2200+ participants to come bombarding back into your email inbox!!! :-)

————————————–

AD2000 & BEYOND’S MOST EXCITING CONTRIBUTION YET!
Wow! Exciting stuff! Just got this in from the Communications Director at the AD2000 & Beyond Int’l Office: “Would you like to see a World-Wide Web site that contained unreached people profiles of hundreds of groups including nice color photographs? So would we and we need your help. Go to the “mini people profiles” found for 1,700 least reached peoples under Joshua Project 2000 at http://www.ad2000.org and you will see that the last field of information contains a blank for “Links to more Information, Profiles or Photos.” For example you will find a link to a beautiful profile on the Uzbeks produced by Caleb Project. If you know of a WWW electronic profile or photograph for any of the peoples listed please send that address (URL) along with the name of the people group it matches to Danatad2000dotorg. You will see the link added within a day or two.” What’s more, they’re going to try to share links for more information, too, where available. For example, see the page on the Yanadi (if the Yanadi page you look at doesn’t contain a “more information contact”, see the experimental page at http://www.ad2000.org/peoples/jpl764a.htm ). Simply by clicking on the contact, you can jot a note off explaining how you’d like to get involved! David, Dan and Lee have worked so hard getting this project launched… and our hats go off to them!!! So — they’re askin’ for it! Load them up with your adopted peoples from the Joshua Project 2000 list! And please do not ask them to list email addresses for individuals residing within creative access areas! Obviously, they’ll want to be sensitive with secure names and addresses, so no need to even send them. Instead, find someone stateside who will serve as a “point person” to answer non-sensitive, general questions and serve as a kind of “foyer” to filter serious inquiries. Congratulations AD2000 & Beyond office, staff and leadership, and Lee (and Dan) in particular!!!! (By the way, if you’d like to help Lee with these projects, he’s willing to brainstorm about how you can volunteer. Write him at leeatrmiidotcom.) Thanks Dave, Lee and Dan!

CATCH A STORY
Bill (and Amy) Stearns, noted missions mobilizers/authors, wrote this past week with this request: “I’m doing a book for Ralph and Roberta Winter on the spin-off influence of the US Center for World Mission. It’s one thing what goes on at that campus (35 acres of visionaries!); it’s another what God has done through that outfit’s impact across the globe–such as through Perspectives, resources, regional offices, people who were once on staff, etc. Got any fun stories about what God has done through and in people/events that are even very indirectly connected to the influence of the Center? Appreciate your input!” Send these stories to Bill at 73502dot3126atcompuservedotcom.

PALESTINIANS SEE JESUS – THIS WEEK’S GLOBAL GLIMPSE:
As many as 1 million Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip may have seen an Arabic-language, prime-time broadcast of the Jesus film Dec. 23 when it was aired by the Palestinian Broadcasting Corp. However, in Egypt, evangelical Christians are continuing to be severely persecuted and even killed for their faith. Three Christian booksellers face seven years in prison for selling imported Christian audio and video tapes.

Join Youth With A Mission (YWAM) and Wycliffe Bible Translators as they team up to offer the ” Missionary Training Programme” in Harpenden, England. This entry way for a career onto a frontier field with either agency starts September 8, 1996. The first four month phase begins with intensive classroom training and small group dynamics. You will get a foundation of missionary discipleship and skill development. The next 16 months will be on the field of your choice–serving and learning along side veteran church planters and Bible translators. After that–who knows–you and your team may pioneer a church or get the Bible translated among an unreached people! CHRISTIANS AS SALT AND LIGHT
MAP International’s 14th triennial International Conference on Christian Health Ministries (ICCHM) will be held June 1-5, 1996 on St. Simons Island in Georgia. “Christians as Salt & Light in Global Health” will focus on global issues that impact health in today’s turbulent world: health and human rights, low-intensity conflict, reconciliation, short-term mission, the stewardship of creation, AIDS, and medical ethics. A variety of speakers will be featured. For more information, contact Anamaria Lazo, ICCHM Registrar, at A-Lazoatmapintdotmhsdotcompuservedotcom.

————————————–

HOW DO YOU SPELL ‘UNREACHED’???
That’s been one of the toughest questions ever, down through the years. (We just received another inquiry on this subject this week, in fact!) Most recently, at least for the purposes of the Joshua Project 2000 project, missions researchers have concluded that a group would be unreached if the percentage of great commission Christians within it number somewhere less than 5%. But at the same time, they realize that in some large groupings, 5% is a lot of believers!!! So no model is perfect. At best, it’s probably just a way of seeing the relevant needs among all. Because when you get right down to it, a soul is a soul no matter where that soul lives, . . . close by, or far away! And by the way, new data will be released next month that will more effectively tell the story. Thanks to John Gilbert and many others, we’ll finally have a scale, of sorts, that will tell us how large the force for evangelism is among that group and how much response has risen up! So keep praying for the least evangelized, no matter where they live!

ANNOUNCING…. A BRAND NEW PEOPLE GROUP RESOURCE ON THE WEB!
Been wanting more information about the approximately 2000 least reached peoples targeted by Joshua Project 2000? Now, there’s help! This resource roared to life literally only yesterday, March 14th! If you can browse the Web, check out the addition to http://www.ad2000.orgOnce there click on “Joshua Project 2000” and you will find a mini people profile on the approximately 2,000 different peoples. These mini-profiles have been designed to host the updated least reached peoples list that will be released on April 15 (next month) from P.I.N. (Peoples Information Network). These mini-profiles will also announce the completion of more detailed Prayer Profiles by Bethany World Prayer Center when available and tell how to obtain them. Bethany reports that 110 peoples have been researched and 14 profiles completed. These are not available to the public yet but Brigada will announce when they are. (Thanks to the AD2000 & Beyond International Office for this news… and thanks to the amazing work of the techs there who have churned out all the technology so quickly!!! For extra details on this exciting development, future possibilities, and implications for the existing PGC, get the BRIGADA SUPPLEMENT — 15 OF MARCH, 1996. If you’re not viewing this on the web, send email to hubatxcdotorgwith only this message in the body of your email note:

————————————–

SURVEY SAAAAAAAID….!!!!??????
The first official Brigada on-line survey came off without a hitch, with 202 Brigada members participating (there are over 2100 Brigada participants in all). Once again, the question was:
“Do you believe it’s possible, through God’s power, to see a church for every people and the gospel for every person by the year 2000?”

Results are as follows:

* 6% ‘voted’ for choice “b”, which was basically a flat ‘no’ – 13 people.
* 36% chose “a”, a flat ‘yes’ – 73 people in all.
* 57% selected “c” – 116 people in all. That choice was, ” Yes but the data doesn’t suggest that it’s likely.”
* (1% was lost in rounding the figures.)

The survey shouldn’t be seen as statistically accurate, because, for one thing, it was a voluntary survey and it depended solely on your initiative to participate. But it is perhaps representative of the fact that well over 9 out of every 10 Brigada participants (over 2100 in all) probably believe that the Task can be accomplished. Many, however, .. in fact the vast majority… just don’t see the data supporting that outcome. They believe it would take a major miracle from God… so that’s what we’d better be praying for during these next few years!

Obviously, one wonders about why the 6% voted that it wasn’t possible. At the same time, they’re entitled to their own opinion. Maybe they hear the message “Many are called and few are chosen” as having a big impact on the evangelization process. At the same time, one voter wrote in and basically said, “Duhhh… How could God not be capable of pulling this off?” And as AD2000 & Beyond media guy wrote this past week, “We can make plans to present to Gospel to people but only God can bring the harvest and that acording to His time table.” We concur. Maybe we’re the ones He’s waiting on. He wants us to be involved – in obedience – to carry out the Task! Seems to me it’s worthy of our highest commitment!

————————————–

SEE YOUR DIGITIZED SELF IN FULL COLOR ON A PRAYER CARD WORLDWIDE!
Now you can do it! Ever hear of Creative Plus? They’re the folks many missionaries use for prayer cards that, with the help of a couple of colorful magnets, become refrigerator enhancements to remind your friends and supporters to pray for your project throughout the whole year. Well now Creative Plus has added digital photo enhancement! According to the recent “Fax Update” they’ve just released, they can take a “not-so-hot” photo, touch it up and make you look like a million bucks! In the “here-are-just-a-few-of-the-special-touches-now-possible at-a-reasonable-extra-cost” section, they even advertise, “Repair photo flaws” and “Remove distracting elements from photo”!!! Just think, missionary wives! You can ask them to dodge out your husband’s mug and you and the kids’ll look simply mahhhvelous!!! :-) (Just kidding of course.) But do give them a call to get on their mailing list. You could use them for special prayer projects, new building construction campaigns, Christmas cards, even birth announcements!!! Regular shipping is free in the USA. They’ll have a web site soon… and they’ve got email now!!! Try them at 72624dot3203atcompuservedotcom or 1-800-347-2848 in the USA. For international callers (see… we try not to forget you!), call 704-843-5040.

TRAVEL CONFERENCE MODERATOR SECURED!
Travel Agents, get ready to roll! Thanks to Mark Fremer, an Information Technologist with YWAM Int’l in England fremeratxcdotorg, you’ll soon have a chance to participate in tons more fares! By mid-April, Mark and Brigada will launch Brigada-travel – where Brigada participants can toss in their travel needs as “requests for quotes” from a whole flock of travel agents who will then answer directly. Can’t wait. Thanks Mark!! And thanks Steve Skaggs for the original idea!

————————————–

YOUR BRIGADA QUESTIONS ANSWERED!
One participant wrote this past week asking if “commands” to the hub can be “batched” in one message. You bet! For example, you could request two documents in the same message to hubatxcdotorg and request a list of conferences on brigada all at the same time!

INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS SET TO SQUARE OFF???
That’s what one Brigada participant believes! Rumor has it that AT&T will be offering five free hours of web access per month (at least in the USA), which will perhaps set off a series of price wars among INTERNET service providers (ISPs). Other ISPs already offering discounts include:

Juno (mentioned last week) – ONLY FOR THE USA, send your mailing address to signupatjunodotcom for more info. Or check out their web site at http://www.juno.com/ (Thanks to Dennis Fahringer photoatuofndotedu, Photo Schools, U of N, for that resource tip!). Phil Adams also tells us you can call 1-800-799-JUNO (tell them “Extension F” and when they ask for your “personal response code”, tell them this was a referral) BUT THIS FREE SOFTWARE WON’T BE AVAILABLE UNTIL THE END OF THE MARCH.

Freemark (also mentioned last week) — http://www.freemark.com/256color/index.html on the Web. (Thanks again to Dennis the sleuth!)

MCI Mail — Call 1-800-999-3690 for MCI mail, with the first handful of messages FREE each month (pay per message after that). This offer is valid only to MCI customers. (Thanks to Bruce Clutter for that tip, MCI ID 719-9921.)

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
Eight families in India’s Bihar province were ready for baptism, but the village leader wanted one of the believers, a man named Sandhu, put to the test by standing on hot coals. While other believers prayed, Sandhu calmly stepped onto the coals and stood there for 10 minutes. Forty-seven villagers accepted Christ that day!

WHAT DO YOU SAY TO A MISSIONARY?
Now for the first time anywhere on-line, you can get Alice Burnett Poynor’s article, ” What Do you Say to a Missionary?” in text form today!!! If you’re not reading this on the web, you can receive this via email, just send a note to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the message:
get brigada what-do-you-say

Her first paragraph begins, “So it’s missions conference time again. You’d like to talk to the missionaries, maybe even have them for a meal and get to know them a bit. But what do you say? How do you start a conversation with someone whose life seems so different from your own? (What does a “church-planter” do all day anyway?) Here are a few pointers to help grease the conversational wheels…. “
(Alice Burnett Poynor’s article first appeared in ACMC’s Networker, January-February 1996. Thanks to both ACMC and Alice Poyner, who have graciously given permission for this article to be reprinted here on Brigada.)

HELPING THE LEAST EVANGELIZED
On board the PGC-Design team conference recently, the media guy for AD2000 & Beyond shared these four ways for helping a least reached people group. It helped me see crystal clear the level at which people could become involved:

“Four Options for Adoption

1. Pray – You can pray for a people. (Intercessors)
2. Profile – You can research a people and produce a profile. (Researchers)
3. Pioneer – You can send or join a church planting team. (Church planters)
4. Promote – You can become a people specific advocate. (Advocates)”

Thanks to David for sharing this insight from a forthcoming AD2000 & Beyond mobilization video! Can’t wait to use it!

BRIGADA ON-LINE SURVEY
Let’s take a survey.
It’s fast.
It’s free.
It’s for you and me!
Using sophisticated online polling technology (actually, it’s quick and dirty conference technology that we’re adapting to online voting!), your vote can count! And it’s as simple as sending one message with two words!

*************** Here’s the question ****************

“Do you believe it’s possible, through God’s power, to see a church for every people and the gospel for every person by the year 2000?”

You’ve got three possible answers:
a) Yes
b) No
c) Yes but the data doesn’t suggest that it’s likely

To vote, just send a normal email message to hubatxcdotorg with just two words in the body text of the message. If you want to vote for choice “a”, your line would read:
subscribe brigada-vote-a

Obviously, if you’d rather opt for “b” or “c”, replace the “a” with your selection. But please do it now. All votes will be tallied at 3pm on Thursday, March 14th. Results will be reported in next week’s Brigada Today. Oh — in case you’re wondering, these are “dummy” conferences (no reference to the participants, of course :-) ), meaning that you’ll never receive any mail or conference traffic. A single acknowledgment message will confirm your vote… and you’ll be automatically unsubscribed at the close of the vote.. so no need to unsubscribe manually. It only takes a second… No one will call. Operators standing by. No obligation. You don’t have to give your credit card number. Send your message today.

And one more thing. Our technology won’t let you “stuff the ballot box”, so no funny ideas out there. :-) Only one “vote” per person is accepted regardless of how many messages you send. :-)

————————————–

GUIDE TO ISLAM IS GROWING!
Thanks to some great dialogue on Brigada-Peoples, we’re beginning to see some great guidance for those wanting to relate more effectively to Muslims. The whole discussion has been very sensitive and sensible. Grab it by sending email to hubatxcdotorg with only this line:
get brigada islam-guide

Got more input for the document? Send it to Brigada-Peoples and we’ll try to catch it and update the document accordingly.

While we’re on the subject, please remember to be very sensitive about what you say on the INTERNET. Remember, sending a message via Internet email is about the same as sending a post card. If we truly care about and love those of other faiths, of course, our motives will assure that we always uplift them and never say anything offensive. Also, be sure to be sensitive about mentioning names and places. Often, we can learn from an example without it having to be specific or personal in any way. Thanks.

THIS WEEK’S GLOBAL GLIMPSE
Evangelism Explosion celebrated its use in every country of the world at the end of 1995. Evangelism Explosion is a strategy for local churches to train and send out lay evangelists. At the beginning of 1995 37 countries still had no EE ministry, but with the unexpected addition of North Korea, today every nation has participated to some degree in the EE strategy. The training materials are available in more than 50 languages and are being used in 700 training clinics world wide.

JOSHUA PROJECT 2000 MOVES FORWARD IN SINGAPORE
(by Ed & Lai Kheng Pousson, Singapore) On February 26, 1996, a Joshua Project 2000 leaders’ meeting convened in Singapore. The half-day session drew 150 key leaders, including heads of major denominations and missions agencies in Singapore. The speaker, Luis Bush, international director of the AD2000 & Beyond Movement, presented the Joshua Project 2000 strategy. The participants then responded positively through small group discussions followed by corporate feedback, which seemed to indicate that the vision and principles of Joshua Project 2000 can and should be implemented here. A full day follow-up meeting of executive leaders of major denominations, churches, and missions agencies has been set for March 21 this year. The leaders will then consider how best to work together for a Joshua Project 2000 missions expression in Singapore, and to discuss the possibility of Singapore hosting a Southeast Asia Joshua Project 2000 consultation some time in 1997.

Here’s another example of the kind of message they’ve recently passed there: In another bit of news, Science News reports Lawrence Berkeley National labs is developing an ultraviolet water disinfectant system for use in developing areas. Listen to these specs – up to 15 gallons/min, weighs 15 lbs, tabletop size, power consumption 40 watts (can be run from solar panel), will handle water from well or hand pump and run UNSUPERVISED. If you like that much, here is the good part – cost is estimated at $300.00 not $300,000 like you would expect from a government project, and operational costs are $0.02 per metric ton of water (2000 liters). The numbers of lives of children that could be saved with this are astonishing. For the price of music for a choir production, a church could donate one of these to a village! It’s not out of reach for a family here to provide for one. Pray they don’t just develop but actually get these out to the field.” We agree!!! Thanks Larry, for keeping us up on this kind of stuff!! (And thanks to my buddy Chris Bushnell for drawing my attention to this message!)

————————————–

FREE EMAIL HOOK-UPS
Have I got your attention??? Surprisingly, there’s apparently no catch!!! A buddy from SIL grad school wrote this past week (we’ll keep his name anonymous since he works in a sensitive area of the world) to alert us to Juno http://www.juno.com and Freemark. Their email services are free and they provide toll free access. In return for free email the companies put small rotating ad in the top of the window (these are Windows/Mac programs). There are some limitations (no attached files), so only simple text messages could be transmitted, but hey, the price is right! My buddy testified, “I’ve used beta version of Juno mail and it works fine.” Want to try it out and report back here? If you do, be sure to provide us with a more concrete email address or toll-free number.

MISSION 2000 – “VOW! WE HAD A FANTASTIC TIME!”
That’s the way the reports are coming in from the 130 prospective mission mobilizers from Germany, Belarus, and the Czech Republic. “VOW !!! WE had a fantastic time.” :-) Jointly organized by YWAM and AIMS Germany, the Plenary sessions, 12 different workshops and 8 different regional workgroups (from Africa to Uzbekistan) taught on member care, non-residential missions, strategic partnership, mobilizing mobilizers, the 10/40 window etc. etc. – many topics were quite new to the participants. . A prayer team of 6 people had as their role to intercede and constantly lift the whole conference in prayer. The point all of them stressed again and again is that mobilizing for Missions is not a method, not a strategy, not a thing that can be done, but that the key of mobilizing is to pass on God’s vision – who wants to see all peoples of the earth come together at his throne to worship him.” In their “MISSION 2000 DECLARATION”, the delegates began, “We believe that God is calling a new German missions movement into existence, which will reach the unreached peoples of the 10/40 Window and beyond. It will be a movement which will originate out of churches which have committed themselves to reach the unreached peoples… We are thankful for world wide movements, such as the AD 2000 movement, the Lausanne movement and others that have been formed in order to encourage cooperative action. We want to join these movements and do our part, so that until the year 2000 (and beyond), a church planting movement has been formed in every people group and that every person on the earth has heard the gospel. …” (Are you catching this Luis? :-) ) ” Yahooooooooooooooooooooo! (Thanks to Kerstin for the great report! Vow!!! ) For more information, or a copy of the complete declaration, contact Kerstin Hack 100711dot2622atcompuservedotcom.

HEARTLAND MISSIONSFEST ’96 INSPIRES 1,300
At the February 15-17 Heartland MissionsFest held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, over 1,300 participants came from 15 states, 20 schools, 100 churches, and 105 missions agencies. … A fire for missions ignited through George Verwer and other speakers! … Designed to inform, inspire and involve those interested in career missions, short-term missions trips or sending others, the three-day conference included 55 workshops. Topics targeted toward individual interests included a variety of workshops on long-term missions, short-term trips, serving as senders, international business, and international health care. Participants also connected with many of the 105 missions agencies that exhibited. … Other MissionsFests are scheduled in the coming year: September in Arkansas, November in St. Louis, and February 1997 in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Vancouver, British Columbia; and Edmonton, Alberta. MORE BRIGADA PARTICIPANTS THAN LEAST EVANGELIZED PEOPLES!
Thanks to Gene Brooks 74114dot440atcompuservedotcom who wrote this past week to point out “Just think, Doug–Now we have more subscribers on Brigada than Joshua Project peoples! Congratulations!” But the real thanks goes to the whole Brigada family, at work not only on line, but in the trenches, on site, and in offices across the globe in all their various churches, agencies and organizations who share a common vision for the nations of the world!!! Keep Marching On!

FREE JOSHUA PROJECT 2000 SOFTWARE – A BRIGADA EXCLUSIVE!
Got access to the web? Bob Whitney bobw5atixdotnetcomdotcom has made it possible for you to search the many peoples of the Joshua Project 2000 Least Evangelized Peoples list — and his software is available here on Brigada! Just create a subdirectory (like c:\temp), download the files, execute them, and go! Full documentation… well… pretty full documentation is provided. If you like grab jpdoc.txt first for more detailed instructions. Bob’s only request is that you send a note to him at bobw5atixdotnetcomdotcom so he can add you to the list of folks to notify when he does upgrades. (By the way, I took the liberty of checking them for viruses and they’re clean! :-)) Point your browser to: http://www.xc.org/brigada/world and download jpdbf.exe and jpprog.exe. They are self-extracting zip files. Bob’s program is DOS but works fine in a Windows session. Thanks loads to Bob Whitney! And again, a tip of the hat to MAFxc for making these online distribution technologies available to the 2000+ Brigada participants worldwide!!!

————————————–

You need resources. Thanks to Bill Taylor for recommending two key resources for training tentmakers from the World Evangelical Fellowship Missions Commission:

NEED A PHOTOMURALIST?
Need a Christian photographer for your Christian organization’s project or ministry? Have a spot for an intern to work alongside a Christian professional photographer in a business? Here’s a deal you can’t refuse!!! Dennis Fahringer writes, “I’m looking for opportunities for our missions-minded Photo School students (from YWAM’s University of the Nations) to be able to serve others. We’re particularly interested in ministries to unreached people groups. Students cover their costs of travel, food and housing. I’m also eager to find Christian pro photographers to teach for a week in our two schools.” Contact Dennis Fahringer, Director of Photo Schools, U of N, e-mail photoatuofndotedu, on the Web at ,fax: 808-326-4501. (By the way, Dennis and our other photographer friend, Mike Scott, mentioned in previous Brigada Today issues, are now working together thanks to their networking initiative as a result of Brigada! Way to go, guys!!!)

————————————–

SO HOW ARE THE PEOPLES OF THE WORLD DIFFERENT???
Well, at the least, try “age-grading, athletic sports, bodily adornment, calendar, cleanliness training, community organization, cooking, co-operative labor, cosmology, courtship, dancing, decorative art, divination, division of labor, dream interpretation, education, eschatology, ethics, ethnobotany, etiquette, faith healing, family, feasting, fire making, folklore, food taboos, funeral rites, games, gestures, gift giving, government, greetings, hair styles, hospitality, housing, hygiene, incest taboos, inheritance rules, joking, kin-groups, kinship nomenclature, language, law, luck superstitions, magic, marriage, mealtimes, medicine, modesty concerning natural functions, mourning, music, mythology, numerals, obstetrics, penal sanctions, personal names, population policy, postnatal care, pregnancy practices, property rights, propitiation of supernatural beings, puberty customs, religious ritual, residence rules, sexual restrictions, soul concepts, status differentiation, surgery, tool making, trade, visiting, weaning, and weather control.”

These 73 categories were first mentioned by Murdock in his “The Common Denominator of Cultures” (1945:124), then quoted in Christianity in Culture by Charles Kraft, 1979, Orbis Books. Murdock felt that every people of the world would possess these basic categories. Yikes. We’re a complex bunch of critters, if you ask me. By the way, I remember studying these in undergrad… but it wasn’t until I saw them mentioned on Brigada-peoples that I got interested again. You can join by sending email to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the message: subscribe brigada-peoples

————————————–

NEED HELP WITH BRIGADA???
Don’t forget that you can get help with Brigada conferences at any time by sending this message to hubatxcdotorg in the text of a normal email message: get brigada help-detailed

If that doesn’t answer your question, you can also write MAFxc at helpdeskatxcdotorg if your question deals with conference commands or the “how to” questions of using MAFxc conferencing.

TRAVEL TRAVEL TRAVEL
One thing most of us have in common: Travel. As Brian sent us info. on Friendship Tours & Services, 209-294-1354, 812 W.Fairmont Ave., Clovis, CA 93612, fax 209-294-7316, it occurred to Brigada participant Steve Skaggs that maybe we should start a travel free-for-all… of sorts!!! Here’s the way it would work. First, we’d need a moderator who cared about getting people the best travel prices around… preferably someone who would be open and fair about pricing. That moderator would need an XC.org address ($52). Then we’d create a Brigada conference… say… brigada-travel. We’d try to get as many travel agents as possible to subscribe and monitor. Then, whenever you needed to travel, you’d join up temporarily, and send in your travel itinerary — a kind of Request For Bids (an “RFB”???). All the travel agents in the universe would pounce on it and within minutes (well, okay… maybe hours…), they’d send their “sealed bids” back to you in private email. So within a day or so, without having to make a single phone call, you’d have the best rates/itineraries/values in town!!! Wha’dya think???? So… anybody willing to step up to the plate and moderate that one???? If so, write DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg and we’ll launch the thing by next week. Oh — and thanks for the idea, Steve! You get your first trip free! :-)

THIS WEEK’S GLOBAL GLIMPSE
The Himalayan Evangelization Consultation, held in northeast India, brought together over 2,000 Nepalese and Indian pastors, January ’96. In 1961, Nepal had no church and only around 25 known Christians. Today, it has over 2,000 local churches with an estimated total of between 200,000 and 300,000 members. In the ’70s Nepalese church leaders had set the goal of reaching all Nepalese with the gospel. Despite persecution, the Nepalese church continues to witness miracles and the deliverance of people from the fear of demons.
