FROM THE “SOMETHING USEFUL FOR 15 CENTS” DEPARTMENT
Every once and awhile some Brigada participant passes along a supremely useful tool that allows us to inch forward in our communication or implementation of the Lord’s Great Commission. This is one of those times. Hats off to Les Tilka lestilkaatmozcomdotcom, writing from the Philippines, who just passed along this note for the whole Brigada family. “If you want to send email to someone that has not yet ‘caught up with the times’ and gotten email – no problem. I ran across this email-to-fax server that is great for overseas or stateside personnel. I have been using it from the Philippines for about two months now and am elated with its performance not to mention the savings. To send a one page fax from anywhere in the world to the US it is only 15 cents per page. At present they are running a free fax promotion and I have sent probably 100 faxes for free! Every user gets 10 free faxes as their trial. It has really been a savings for me!” Right Les!!! It’s great! To see what Les was talking about, I logged onto the Web. http://www.faxsav.com, read about it, and within 30 seconds had sent my first fax to our own fax machine here in the office. From the time I sent the email until the fax machine kicked into receive, it was exactly 1 min., 17 seconds! For those without web access, simply email a request for more information to internetatfaxsavdotcom. If you’d prefer, call FaxSav Customer Service at +1 908 906 1555 from outside the US or at 1-800-909-0080 from inside the US.

Now for the really cool part. You can also download a free software package that they give away . . . (it can be emailed to you or you can grab it at their web site) that lets you send fully formatted faxes from any Windows program, as long as you have a Winsock connection (if you aren’t sure whether that has something to do with computers or stockings you get for being 1st place, ask your Internet Service Provider for help). When you install it, it installs a printer driver (faxLauncher) in Windows. When you want to fax something formatted, you connect to your Internet service provider (Netcom, Compuserve, or whatever with a Winsock connection), pretend you’re going to print it, then redirect your output to that new “printer” (which is really their faxLauncher software), and . . . shazam . . . it sends your fully formatted fax over the Internet!!! Again, it’s just 15 cents/page to the USA from anywhere in the world! And Les is right . . . during this promotional time, you’ll get to fax for free!

Only thing confusing for me was the fact that, once I was convinced and tried to register my credit card to become a paying customer, it wouldn’t accept it! Said I was already an “existing customer” . . . and wouldn’t let me become a “paying” one. Guess it wants me to use up my 10 free faxes first? I have a note in to their Customer Service to ask, but for now, I’m still able to send for free anyway. So . . . this one’s a keeper! Happy faxing . . . and thanks Les! . . . . from all of us!

“DID YOU KNOW…” (FUN FACTS TO KNOW AND TELL)
You’ll recall that this discussion initially started with a fun question about water going down the shower drain. :-) From there . . . let’s see . . . we went several directions, including tea leaves spinning to the middle of your teacup. This wouldn’t be a bit interesting for missionaries, except for the fact that, by definition, we’re posted all over the world. Well here’s a guy who writes from Antarctica! Ralph Holwerda ralphsydatozemaildotcomdotau spent a year there and he brings up a bigger than life illustration about the fact that the winds from up North (of Antarctica) blow fearsome at times (like Ralph says that at “NZ base ‘Scott Base’, about 1300 km further North we recorded wind-speeds of over 90 knots (170 km/h))”, whereas at his base at the South Pole, they seldom exceed 10 knots! So Ralph says the wind blows all the snow in the world (just about) to the South Pole, then dies down and dumps it all there! So Ralph’s theory is that tea leaves go to the middle, in part, because there’s no “wind” [ie., current] there! He also wrote some beautiful connections to Psalms: Did you know that the greatest part of Antarctica is covered with about 4km (13,000ft) of snow and ice!!! When you go to the actual South Pole, the barometric pressure is only around 2/3 of what it is at ground level, because you’re so high up (in fact aeroplanes there have difficulty getting off the ground because of this). If most of the Antarctic is covered with that much snow and the surface area is about twice that of USA (!) can you understand that David writes in Psalm 33: “He gathereth the waters of the sea together as a HEAP: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.” (KJV, emphasis mine). BUT how could David know that? He’d never been on the Antarctic. He lived almost 3000 years before man first set foot on that great continent! David MUST have been a prophet!” No matter what you think of Ralph’s interpretation, it’s still good to hear from someone with first hand experience of literally traveling to the ends of the earth with Christ’s name on his lips! Thanks Ralph!

Now on to other topics, a worker in the Czech Republic is plagued by this question: “Now that the tea leaf thing has been solved, I have another question for you. Which direction is the correct way to eat a banana? My husband and I are missionaries in the Czech Republic, and compared to Americans, here they eat it up-side down! The stem that we use to open the peel, they use as a handle at the bottom. They say you can eat the whole banana that way without getting it on your hands. …” Lydia Bischoff Blansko, Czech Republic, czechoutatlogindotcz. This is serious stuff. I mean, how many other cultural practices are so well-entrenched in the North American continent as this “how to eat a banana” norm?!!! :-) So . . .the jury’s now out. Which end of the banana is the correct end for the mouth and which is correct for the handle!!?! :-) Sigh. Don’t you wish your life consisted of solving those kinds of problems instead of the ones you really have to face today??? :-)

————————————–

DOING RESEARCH ON A LEAST REACHED GROUP??? TRY GOING TO THE AMAZON!
That’s what Randall Merriott Merriottataoldotcom suggests anyway. ‘Course, he’s not talking about the jungle! He’s talkin’ the Internet Amazon! He wrote to us this past week, “I just came across this internet bookstore, Amazon http://www.amazon.com, which offers over one million titles. They have an easy to use keyword search tool and they also offer to notify you by E-mail of new releases matching your search criteria. I haven’t yet ordered from them, so I can’t vouch for their service. Prices seem to be reasonable. I found about 15 titles relating to my favorite people group.” Great idea, Randall! Thanks!

————————————–

JUNO KEEPS ON GOING!
Thanks to Barry Lillie lilliepadatjunodotcom for writing with first-hand testimony about Juno, the free email service we’ve mentioned previously. Barry’s feedback is, “It is only E-Mail, not web Browsing, etc. But you can’t beat the price and if most of one’s need is for words and not pictures, it might be great help for those in the missions community.” As we’ve published before, dial toll-free 1-800-654-JUNO if you’re in the USA, or email your name and USA mailing address to signupatjunodotcom. This service doesn’t offer out-of-USA dial-ups.

Want more training on how to create your own Christian comic books — from initial idea through published product — to use in reaching the unreached??? Kingdom Comics is offering courses in Atlanta, September 23-27 and Colorado Springs, September 30-October 4. TRAVEL CONFERENCE COMING TO A SCREEN NEAR YOU!
You’ll recall that several months back, the Lord raised up a moderator for Steve Skaggs’ travel agent “request for quote” conference idea. Mark Fremer has gone into action these past 10 days and almost has the entire package ready to roar. So travel agents, be listening. In the very near future, we’ll be asking you to subscribe to a core conference where you’ll listen to the rest of us send in “request for quotes.” You’ll then be able to send us your best value and we’ll have the unique chance to take our pick of itineraries and flight plans! Should significantly reduce costs for you (listening to us dial you all up each time and use up your toll-free number dimes) while saving all of us a bunch of time shopping for the best fares. Plus you’ll be able to hunt for good values when your own schedule allows! Watch for more information coming soon!

————————————–

LOOKING FOR A HOST FOR YOUR MISSION’S NEW WEB PAGE?
There are lots of options. MAFxc offers web page hosting; for information, email helpdeskatxcdotorg. You could also try The International Institute of Technology and Theology, at IITTataoldotcom. (IITT has a great search starter page at: http://www.starthere.com. Try it!) Most of these services seem to be charging anywhere from $10/month on up to handle your web site. Keep in mind that you do the web design and html-coding . . . so you’re paying only for the server file storage.

————————————–

SO THAT YOU DON’T OPERATE UNDER FALSE PRE-TENTS
:-) Thanks to Ken Smith KSmithatgatidotwadotcom for his update on the upcoming conference for tentmakers Friday August 2: “For those coming early to the INTENT ’96 conference at LAX …, The Continental Plaza dining room has set aside a special area where conferees can eat and share with one another. It will be marked for International attendees, but all are welcomed. Dinner will be served there between 6 and 7pm. Registration for International Conferees will begin at 8:30 am on the 2nd so that they can attend the pre-conference meeting from 9:30 to 11:30.” Please feel free to contact Ken directly if you have additional questions.

FOLLOW-UP TO FOLLOW-UP TO “IBM TO OFFER INTERNET FOR THE WORLD”
:-) Will we ever get this IBM thing figured out? Maybe, thanks to Pete Holzmann Peteatxcdotorg who sent in some additional clarifying comments: “To sign up with IBM [from the USA], call 800/863-8277. This number can also provide any access numbers needed. To see a complete list of local access numbers, showing cities and countries where local access is available, check http://www.ibm.net/phonenum.html [if you have www access]. … Didax is NOT the same as IBM Global Network. Didax is a separate service, that *uses* IBM’s network… Yes, there are (exactly) 600 local access numbers. That isn’t 600 different locations; many international cities have several numbers listed. The 600 includes separate listings for slow and fast modems, for example. The network has local access in one or more cities in 48 nations, with good coverage in Europe and the Americas. Asian and former USSR coverage is pretty dismal for the most part (although Japan is well represented). For example, all of Russia is “covered” by a local number only in Moscow. CompuServe has local dial access in many cities across Russia. There are plenty of surprises even in the USA; for example, most of Denver has no local access!!??!! International travelers and missionaries using CompuServe or AOL ought to compare their typical travel destinations with the IBM Net list; I’m sure many heavy e-mail users can save significantly through a switch. ” Thanks Pete! For non-USA users, I called IBM and got a fax number for you: fax 423-477-6869 to ask for more info. on IBM’s connectivity options in your country.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
In May, 1995 4,000 delegates met in Seoul Korea for the Global Consultation on World Evangelization conference (GCOWE). These men and women came from 186 countries to plan how to finish the task of world evangelization. As a result of this conference, research teams are now being sent to more than 1,300 distinct ethnic groups (living in 130+ countries) so that agencies, churches, and individuals can adopt the needs of these groups, focusing ministry efforts there. The vast majority of these groups live in the area called the 10/40 Window, including parts of Africa, India, China, Pakistan, Indonesia, Central Asia, Iran, and many other countries.

CHECK OUT THE BRIGADA “FAMILY”
When you join the “top level” of the Brigada family of networks (the one that sends you this weekly update, Brigada Today), you’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg! Under this umbrella, dozens of interdependent discussions are ongoing! In some cases, they’re resolving issues such as language learning or missions mobilization, sometimes in particular regions. In other cases, they’re talking about trying to reach a particular people group or a specific family of peoples. Still others serve as voices for particular teams serving in different locations around the world. The list goes on. To get a full list of all the discussions in the Brigada family, send email to hubatxcdotorg with just one word in the text of the message body:
conferences

In just a few minutes, you’ll receive a reply to your email, consisting of a list of conferences. Skim down to the ones that begin with, “Brigada-…” and you’ll see the selection. To join any of the conferences, just send another message to hubatxcdotorg with this one line, where is the full name of the Brigada conference you’d like to join:
subscribe

That’s it! It’s that simple! So join in . . . and let’s start talkin’!

————————————–

PRESENTING . . . BRIGADA WORLDWIDE WEB’S NEW SEARCH ENGINE (PHASE I)
oil lamp Today we give gallons and gallons of thanks to Bob Mayhew for burning the midnight oil to prepare a super-fast search engine for the Brigada web site’s past issues index. To access it, click on Brigada Today at the Brigada site http://www.xc.org/brigada then click on the index highlight. Use this site to find that hard-to-remember phone number for some resource you’re trying to find. For example, you know we mentioned a video for JP2000 sometime in the past but can’t quite remember how to get it? Just fill in the blank with JP2000 and hit submit and in seconds, you’ll get a list of all the individual text items that mentioned the term, JP2000.
Note that this “Phase I” implementation only includes resources since January 1, 1996 but it does point to back issues of both Brigada Today and Advance. Future implementations will expand the search. Again, thanks Bob for making it easier for us all to find resources!!!

DID YOU KNOW… (FUN FACTS TO KNOW AND TELL)
I know you’ve been on the edge of your teapots wondering about Chris McDermott’s perplexing question, “Why do tea leaves go to the middle of the cup when you stir the tea?” Well the answer came from a physics teacher in Guam: “Since the tea leaves are floating on the top of the cup of water, they must be lighter than the water. When stirring the cup of tea the substance with heavier mass (the water) is forced away from the center and the substance with lighter mass (the tea leaves) are forced to the center.” teacup
Thanks Ken Bertel!

FOLLOW-UP TO “IBM TO OFFER INTERNET FOR THE WORLD”
Thanks to those who wrote to straighten us out on the correct address to IBM’s web site. David Householder pointed out that http://www.ibm.net gives a bit clearer presentation of the plan and makes it easier to understand how to follow through with subscribing. But even after getting this address correct, our users were still having trouble figuring out exactly how to actually subscribe. Doug Birch seemed to find the easiest way to plug into the IBM Global Network. He suggested that we just subscribe “to Dydax, the PK websters. You should be able to email infoatdidaxdotcom or cal 1-888-AT-DIDAX. The blurb says they have over 600 access numbers to the IBM Global Network.” Let us know if you subscribe and like it! By the way, Doug says it’s $19.95/month. Thanks for helping us clear this one up, David and Doug!

————————————–

PRE-TENTS
[If these folks are going to have their conference before people actually go to INTENT, would they be PRE-TENTS?] “A pre-conference meeting for all international tentmakers attending the INTENT ’96 conference will be held at 9:30 am on Friday August 2. The meeting will be in the Continental Plaza Hotel near the Los Angeles airport (LAX). Berit Kloster, Director of the Norwegian Tentmakers Forum and an executive committee member of (TIE) Tentmakers International Exchange will moderate the meeting. You all come, everybody is welcome.” Thanks to Ken Smith kosmithathalcyondotcom for the info. Write Ken if you need additional details.

————————————–

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
According to the latest figures released by Dr. David Barrett’s Global Evangelization Movement, every minute 163 previously unevangelized people hear the gospel in a form that they can understand and 114 … become Christians. In that same minute, 18 people are born, and six non-Christians die. This year the global population will increase by about 91 million.

HAVE YOU CAUGHT YOUR COPY OF CATCH THE WAVE?
Looking for just the right resource book to help today’s young person appreciate the globe and its spiritual needs??? Try Catch the Wave, by Kevin Johnson (Bethany House Publishers). “Life is more than jet-skis, frisbees, and big screen TVs…. God is crashing in like a wave all over the planet. So how do you Catch the Wave? By learning how to grab your place in God’s plan to change the world. And there’s no better place to be than in the water with him. Don’t miss out on your chance to get wet!” Not only is this a great book to brew planet-minded spiritual young adults, but also, it mentions Brigada as a resource on page 137! Hand me my checkbook! :-)

HELP HEAL AND RESTORE THE BALKANS … OR LEAVE IT TO THE UN
Bill and Amy Stearns want to know if you’re willing to try to get involved in healing the hurts in Bosnia. If so, want to accompany them on their “Bosnia Scouting Trip,” Oct. 21-Nov. 1, for pastors and church leaders. Their idea is to hold joint orientation in Budapest for 30 N. Americans and 15 E. European pastors, then to travel for 6 days into Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia. We’ll link up there with local evangelicals to see what we as the Body might do to pray for, heal and help restore the Balkans in the name of Christ. North Americans pay their own way plus a stipend for their E. European counterparts. Bill says, “This is a no-frills, gutsy survey trip. World Christian isn’t a relief agency, so we don’t want funding funneled through us. The purpose is to see the harvest field potential and let leading churches set the pace to respond through their own mission channels.” If interested, contact Bill & Amy Stearns, World Christian (719/634-5310; e-mail 73502dot3126atcompuservedotcom). Sounds like the kind of thing that could make some real grass roots differences in the lives of some real people with real hurts. Wha’dya think?

MORE ON THE ACCUSED KUWAITI BELIEVER, HUSSEIN
If you’re interested in an update on the accused Robert Hussein, don’t miss this update. As it explains, “We are not interested in drawing undue attention to Robert Hussein, or in making him a star out of this situation, but we ARE interested in this case because of the precedent it may set. Though Robert is not the first case of a Kuwaiti Muslim converting to Christianity, he is the first to go public with his conversion and the first to have been challenged in the religious courts (most stay in hiding or just leave the country).” Today’s update explains how to use email to send a fax directly to the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the State of Kuwait . . . for free! It also pulls together a summary of what’s been accomplished so far on Hussein’s behalf, via internet, faxes, air mail, and more. To get the update, send a note to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the message:
get brigada hussein.960713

In a few moments, the update will be automatically mailed back to you.

DON’T MISS THE GROWTH AT CALEB PROJECT
. . . at least at the Caleb Project web site, that is . . . http://www.goshen.net/calebproject. Over the last few days, they’ve added 27 articles on everything from language learning to support raising, from parents to debt, from the missionary lovelife, to tentmaking, to the missionary call. In addition, there’s a “Persecuted Church” set of pages with updates on Hussein (in Kuwait), Sudan, China, Pakistan and more. Finally, John Hanna used Global Mapping’s software to produce a map of the “Priority 1 and 2” unreached peoples from the JP2000 list (larger populations are shown by size and color), as well as 3 detailed maps showing where the top 100 least reached peoples live together with their names. These maps reveal priority areas where we’ll need to focus our final efforts for least reached peoples! John challenges, “See if you can find where the Kawar or the Takistani live! (Pray for advocates for these peoples while you’re at it!)” Thanks JHanna and Nate!

DID YOU KNOW… (FUN FACTS TO KNOW AND TELL)
Just as we thought we were about to settle the whole story on HDC (Hemispheric Drain Conditions), we’re faced with Chris McDermott’s perplexing question, “Why do tea leaves go to the middle of the cup when you stir the tea?” Even more gripping is the fact that much of the world doesn’t get to verify this phenomenon, since they don’t get to use real tea leaves anymore!

“THE WHOLE STORY” ABOUT HUSSEIN – CHAPTER TWO
For those interested in following the story of Robert Hussein, be sure to check out the new Hussein update on the hub. Hussein is a new believer in Kuwait. According to the update, “Shortly after his conversion, his wife left him, his home was ransacked, and he was forced to go into hiding. Earlier this year, he was charged with apostasy and forced to appear without legal representation before religious courts in Kuwait. On May 29, an Islamic court in Kuwait pronounced Robert Hussein, a Kuwaiti citizen, an ‘apostate’ and declared that as such, he ‘should be killed.’ In today’s more extensive update, readers are asked to write two specific individuals in Kuwait to appeal for his fair treatment. To retrieve the update, send email to hubatxcdotorg with this line in the body of the message text:
get brigada hussein.960706

The Robert Hussein web site is at http://www.domini.org/hussein/home.htm. My understanding is that at this site, authors have figured out a way to build an on-line fax generator that automatically faxes Kuwaiti gov’t officials. According to Nick Hall, this fax-manufaxturer has already gotten the attention of the Kuwaiti government! They’ve apparently already written the domini.org webmaster and asked for relief!!! So get the hussein update (which includes a sample letter), then get on the fax-generator and send your note. And please bow for a moment and pray for this gentleman’s life!

FINALLY! A TRAVELING TRAINING PACKAGE FOR JP2000 TEAMS!
Thanks to Caleb Project’s Shane Bennett for agreeing to present training for up and coming Joshua Project 2000 Research Teams! Now that AD2000 & Beyond has made a “live training experience” an integral part of the “official” JP2000 process, Shane will probably be one busy guy! But as an experienced trainer, researcher and prayer journey leader, he’s up to the task. We had him as a presenter at an Envision ’96 training event in January and he did a bang-up job. Evaluations from participants were very positive. As co-author for Caleb Project’s Research Expedition training manual, he’s well qualified. Caleb Project borrowed heavily from this manual in publishing AD2000 & Beyond’s JP2000 training book. Now, Shane’s seminars will bring to life the principles outlined in that book, Life-Changing Encounters. Contact Shane (soon! if you want him) at Shanedarataoldotcom. And hey — you could have him come to your area once, hear him out, take good notes, then do it next time with local talent (maybe you?). Shane’s the kind of guy that wouldn’t mind seeing stuff re-used for the Kingdom of God. In fact, he’d love it! We’ve already written to try to book him or a colleague for an extensive research expedition-type training event in January… Participants from two different teams have already signed up!

ADVANCE READY FOR RETRIEVAL
The July Advance is ready to read! Here’s an executive summary:

ADVANCE Summary: July 1996

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM TURKMENISTAN
Turkmenistan had only a small handful of scattered believers several years ago, but today there are more than 150 with many new baptisms this year. Many of the young believers in this Central Asian republic are persecuted and some have been imprisoned for their faith, even though the 4.5 million inhabitants of Turkmenistan have “official” freedom of religion. Several literature projects are under way, including translating Josh McDowell’s popular book, “More Than a Carpenter” into the Turkmen language. Another exciting translation project is the colorful Turkmen Children’s Bible.

WANT MORE INFORMATION ON USING PHONES ON THE NET?
John Redman johnatadncdotcom urges us to read http://204.7.54.2/fwd/new/faq.htm, which fills us in on a plan whereby an international committee hopes to set up servers in locations all over the world to make local phone calls via Internet Phone. The server in the “destination” country will “patch” the user through to the local phone company’s lines, allowing you to call users not equipped with Internet audio capability. If you don’t have access to the web, get the text copy by sending email to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the body of the message text:

FREE EMAIL BENEFITS RURAL US POPULATION
Thanks to Dave Householder who reminded us that the free email service, Juno, especially benefits those USA residents living in rural areas where no on-line service or internet service provider provides a local dial-up to the Net. Why? Because from the beginning, Juno hasn’t charged a dime for accessing its service through a toll-free dial-up number. For more information, see Juno’s homepage at http://www.juno.com/ or call 1-800-799-JUNO.

MARCH FOR JESUS A BIG SUCCESS!
Sources say 11 million people marched in 170 nations during this past May’s “March for Jesus.” “The angels have never seen a day like this: around 11 million people marched for Jesus in 170 nations,” according to Gerald Coates, leader of England’s Pioneer movement and member of the global March for Jesus committee. “They all prayed for a global pouring out of the Holy Spirit and an activation of God’s people to make Christ attractive and understandable for the people around them.” From the million participants in the Philippines, between 2 and 4 million in Brazil and around a million in the USA to the mini-march in Macedonia with 100 people and at least one newly converted ex-KGB officer, another March for Jesus (MFJ) was added to the annals of church history.”

IBM TO OFFER INTERNET FOR THE WORLD
Thanks to Mark Dempsey, a missionary in South America, for tipping us off to IBM’s expansion as an internet service provider. “IBM’s ISP service also provides local dial access from more than 350 points of presence in the U.S., and, overall, more than 600 in 45 countries around the world. Once users register in their home countries, they can place local calls in any of the 44 other countries with no international traveling surcharges.” So the monthly flat rate of $19.95 allows unlimited access time in 45 countries!!! Where do I sign up??? :-) Check out http://reg.ibm.net/cc_svcplan.html for more info. Thanks Mark!

LOOK WHO’S TALKIN’!
Following last week’s item about Microsoft’s new NetMeeting software http://www.microsoft.com/ie/download/MSNETMTG.exe the people at Microsoft must have taken a real hit on their server! I took a few moments later that evening to experiment again with this new audio conferencing tool and saw several Brigada participants’ names in the server list! In fact, I struck up a conversation with one fellow I hadn’t seen since he was a missions grad student at a seminary I visited years ago! Once again, all you need is a microphone, speakers, an Internet connection (28.8 or faster works best) and some time. Arrange a meeting with a friend today!

DID YOU KNOW… (FUN FACTS TO KNOW AND TELL)
Your mail has me rolling in the floor! What originally started as an off the cuff joke (“Does water really go down the shower drain in the opposite direction when you switch from the north to the south hemisphere?”) has proven to be quite an item of curiosity for more people than I realized! Take Mike Stevens’ note for example. He says the whole thing is upside down anyway, since the original map got it wrong! “The Planet Earth is a magnet, right? Well, it is now possible to measure magnetic waves and determine which pole of the planet is magnetic North. Guess which magnetic pole is located at the geographical North Pole? Yes you are correct – it is in fact the South Magnetic Pole. So, we in Europe are in fact ‘down under’ and the ‘antipeodeans’ are really living on top of the world. We always wondered what it was about the colonial mapmakers :-).”

But the best response of all came from Ken Bertel of SAIC, who pointed out that if you live + or – 5 degrees from the equator (Papua New Guinea for example), water goes straight down the drain with no whirl pools! I mean, this guy even knew the scientific name for the whole discussion (the “Coriolis effect”??), which kind of made me feel more intelligent for having asked the original question! (Course, it didn’t do a lot to persuade my wife that it was an intelligent question! She thinks we’re all nuts for even caring! :-)) I just wish you could have all seen her face when I started reading excerpts from Ken’s response: “Water in the sink is really traveling from west to east at approx. 1000 miles per hour near the equator due to the rotation of the earth. And the water at the north side of the sink is traveling at the same speed as water at the south end of the sink because the surface of the water is parallel to the axis of rotation of the earth….” (This guy’s got to be a science professor somewhere! :-) ) So ANYWAY, thanks to our globe trotting friends who have helped solve this mystery about the water… and had some fun along the way! And thanks to Bob Hall’s web page that spawned the whole discussion. And by the way, don’t forget to check out Bob’s “new” page http://www.cmd.org.nz/new.html, which includes everything from book reviews to articles to missions opportunities and up to date missions info!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM ETHIOPIA
A tribe in Ethiopia, the Tarra, was not surprised when a missionary arrived in their village. They had had a vision that a man would come with a book and that they should listen to him. When the missionary first met with the tribe’s chief, he was given permission to stay and later given a plot of land to build a church. But the tribe’s witch doctors would not let him, and instead began building a temple there. On the day the temple was completed, wind and lightning destroyed it and the witch doctors left. The church then was built, but the burned-over plot remains as a reminder of the powers of God. About 70 tribe members became Christians in the past year.

THANKS TO THE MODERATORS! (Part II)
As we said last week, without the help of dozens of moderators, the Brigada dream of working together would be impossible! Each “family” or network of Brigada participants depends heavily on a volunteer (a Moderator) to oversee the administrative concerns of that particular conference. These moderators receive no pay and, at times, little thanks for the hours they invest. So we’re publicly saying here that we really appreciate you gang!!! All the conferences below start with the word, “Brigada-“. The number following the conference/moderator is the current subscriber total for that conference.

FOLLOW-UP TO “KINAPPED MISSIONARY FREE”
We continue to get mail regarding Raymond Rising, the missionary recently released after being held hostage for more than two years in Colombia. The latest, from Al Adan at Wycliffe’s Singapore office, urged us to give praise to the Lord for answered prayer in this regard! Al’s right! Let’s give thanks for Raymond’s release! There must have been thousands praying for this day!
