GLOBAL GLIMPSE FOR THE GOLD
Thousands of volunteers with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) and Atlanta area churches gave this year’s Olympic Games eternal rewards. YWAM assembled 4,000 for the event with many working in security or hospitality positions. Hundreds of trained street evangelists and ministry teams from across the globe waited eagerly to be led to individuals who were ripe for the Kingdom. Reports came in daily to YWAM’s web page telling how Jesus’ saving grace touched yet another heart. Many visitors from countries where the Gospel is restricted had their first opportunity to meet a Christian and talk about Jesus.
(Source: Various. Consult YWAM’s Web page http://atlanta.jubilee.co.uk or e-mail atlantaatjubileedotcodotuk.)
Global Glimpse is compiled each week by John Hanna, Caleb Project, Littleton, CO.

GET YOUR MISSIONARY A CAR!
car Remember the query about where to get missionary cars? Well thanks to Paul Verhagen for reminding us of Missionary Auto Truck Service (MATS), right here in my own Cincinnati, Ohio! MATS works out leasing/buying deals with auto dealerships and can be contacted at matsattsodotcindotixdotnet. Chuck Schroth will answer. Thanks Paul!

————————————–

NOTHING NEW UNDER THE HUSSEIN
For those wondering, it appears that nothing much new has taken place in the case of Robert Hussein. Please do keep praying that God would arrange a good way out for this believer who has openly accepted Christ.

————————————–

YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD VERSION 2.0
Now you can get You Can Change the World, version 2, with 26 new countries, 26 new people groups, prayer requests for all, etc. Featured are Cuba, Saudi Arabia, Trinidad, Syria, Buryats, Pygmies, Acehnese, Dayak. Daphne Speaggett was apparently the editor. Those who own the first version (one of the last works by Mrs. Patrick Johnstone) can attest to its powerful appeal to children. For more information, look at http://www.zondervan.com or call 616-698-6900, or fax 616-698-3439.

WANNA DO A RESEARCH EXPEDITION?
Beavercreek Christian Church (BCC) and Team Expansion are jointly in the process of recruiting researchers for the 1997 Yanadi Research Team to India. This Phase 1 PACE (Church of Christ/Christian Church) mission project includes one month of intensive pre-field research training, three months in-country research in rural India, and one month of debrief (write final strategy document, compile photographs, slides, etc.). The time frame for this effort is December 28, 1996 to May 1997 and requires a five month commitment from researchers. In addition to a good knowledge & understanding of the Bible, interested persons should also have ability in the following areas: Strong and maturing Christian walk, analytical thinking, effective writing, academic proficiency, overseas experience desired, personal initiative, interpersonal relations skills. For more information: Contact Eric Derry, Team Expansion, Yanadi Project Facilitator as soon as possible at (513) 429-0541 or email Yanadi Brigada Conference moderator David Porter at drporteratxcdotorg. Researchers would need to raise a minimum of 1/2 their own financial support.

————————————–

DON’T GO RUSHIN’ INTO RUSSIA WITHOUT RUSSIAN BIBLE SOFTWARE
Sergej A.Fedosov at alexataversdotdonetskdotua is eager to tell about a new Russian language Bible program. We haven’t used it . . . but write him if you want to find out more!

THE REPUBLICANS LEFT SAN DIEGO… BUT YOU CAN NOW GO WITH THE CHINESE!
Thanks to Bob Norsworthy, of International Students Incorporated, who wrote this past week to offer this special opportunity to all Brigada Today readers: “ISI, in conjunction with numerous other ministry partners will be hosting an evangelistic, world view conference for Mainland Chinese students and scholars June 20-27, 1997, in San Diego, California. The conference, titled “China ’97…At the Crossroads” will highlight the legacy of Mainland Chinese students and scholars who have come to the United States to study, and their achievements upon returning to China. The conference will challenge both non-Christian and Christian PRC students and scholars to consider the evidences for God and Christianity, Christian beliefs, issues of spiritual growth, China and Christianity, and a track covering issues such as Biblical principles for marriage and family life, and dealing with issues of suffering and oppression. ISI and others are in the process of raising sponsorships to help defray the cost for PRC students and scholars to attend this conference. The week long event will couple an experience of staying in American Christian homes throughout the San Diego area with the conference, and an opportunity to visit Disneyland, Sea World, and other southern California attractions. The cost for the students and scholars will be $125.00 for the week, inclusive of airfare, meals, lodging, and all conference costs. ISI would like to invite any Brigada readers who are involved with ministry to PRC students and scholars to attend the conference and bring students with them. You may respond to this event through e-mail by contacting Bob Norsworthy, Vice President of Ministries for ISI at BobNorsataoldotcom. ISI is trusting the Lord for 400 Mainland Chinese students and scholars to attend this life changing event.”
[Ed. note: Bob, this is a tremendous offer. I don’t know how you can do it, honestly, for that price. If readers start saving now, it seems like anyone could put together the funds to participate by next June! Thanks for your energy and effort in this regard!]

CALLING ALL OBEDIENCE-ORIENTED EDUCATORS
One project we’ve been tooling away at for quite some time is how to give on-field workers some kind of “plan” or list of principles for developing their on-field ministries long-term — a kind of “best case scenario” of what key issues should be covered in launching a new church abroad.

Happily, I now think I’ve found at least a major piece of that missing ingredient, in the form of George Patterson’s Obedience-Oriented Education principles, as spelled out in his early writings, but made much clearer in the Church Multiplication Guide (William Carey Library, 1993, $10) that he and Dick Scroggins authored. While a missionary in Central America, Patterson developed 62 booklets for Theological Education by Extension and in the Guide, he explains how to implement them. He lists 162 key issues that each new church planter will face . . . and many are very adaptable to cell church models (in fact, Patterson treats that very specifically). If you are an on-site missionary using this approach, would you please drop me a brief note as to how it’s worked out so far? We’ve already come across users in Chile and Thailand and are sure there are many others. If you’re interested in trying it, order the book at 1-800-MISSION in the USA and please let us know what you find (outside the USA, Fax 918-794-0477 or write PO Box 40129, Pasadena, CA 91114, voice 818-798-0819).

————————————–

THANKS FOR THE OUTPOURING OF LOVE FOR MY SILENT VOICE!
Thanks to the many who took time to send a note of encouragement. I’m fully back at the office now, . .. though still not up to speed talking on the phone! My voice comes across very quietly . . .and I can’t get any enthusiasm or “oomph” in it yet. I see the surgeon on the 23rd of Aug., then immediately begin voice therapy. Thanks for your prayers.

Recently, I caught wind of a co-worker in another “international” office of a major mission organization. Last week, he was hospitalized with severe clinical depression, unable to even eat. This reminded me of just how fragile our inner “self” really is. I don’t yet have “clearance” to give this individual’s name, but would you pray just the same, for a moment, right now, as you’re reading this, that God would work mightily to lift him up and give him renewed strength and vigor to face the challenges of future days??? Thanks. I have a feeling that the Lord will know the name of the one for which you’re pleading.

And . . . I hope you have a wonderfully speech-filled day! :-)
Doug

MORE ON INTERNET PHONING
The jury’s still out on Internet Phoning. One user wrote this past week to say that, from everything he could gather, there were many dissatisfied users out there. Bottom line: Don’t expect new technologies like Internet Phoning to be a cakewalk! If you live on the cutting edge, sometimes you’re bound to see some blood! :-)

————————————–

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
Believers in Vietnam continue to win others to Christ, despite official opposition. In a two-week period, 135 students made decisions for Christ after a teacher shared his faith. Over three months, one church group reported 450 public commitments and 200 baptisms. In many parts of Vietnam Christianity is strictly controlled.

SO NOW THAT WE CAN FAX, HOW DO WE WRITE??
Thanks to DavidHousholderatxcdotorg who reminded us of Compuserve’s ability to mail out paper mail via their closest server, just as we asked last week in “How Do We Write?” However, Ken Daniels 75754dot2075atCompuServedotCOM, the originator of the question, had already tried that service and had found it to be a tad on the pricey side of things. If you know of other options, write Ken directly.

THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE
Thanks to all those who have been praying this week for healing from my August 6th surgery — and to those who didn’t know because we didn’t want to overdramatize the situation, I now ask prayer for healing and quick recovery. The surgeon felt good about the operation (but, . . . malpractice suits being what they are today, . . . Duhhh. . . what’s he gonna say!??? :-)), and now, some 3 days after the fact, I still have had very little pain and discomfort.

He laser-zapped and removed the noncancerous growth from my vocal chords with no problem. For months now, it had kept me from speaking clearly, rendering me constantly hoarse and frustrated when preaching, teaching or even coaching soccer. I was given a mandate — 7 days of complete vocal rest! I can’t talk for another 4 days . . (now that is pain! :-)), so I feel like the Invisible Man! (Does my throat still make noise?) We won’t really know if the surgery worked until next Tuesday or Wed., when they release me to start talking! I start voice therapy shortly after that to learn how to talk all over again, with my new chords! :-)

I never before had felt such a peace. On the night before the surgery, my 9-year-old (Christopher) asked if I was scared, and I could truly answer him, “Christopher, with you and all these people praying worldwide, knowing that I’m in the hands of the same God who created the universe and knowing that He has promised to work everything in my life out for the good, how could I be scared???”

So . . . it occurred to me, . . . why do we worry and fret about what’s going to happen tomorrow? At the end of it all, can we not somehow bring ourselves to accept the fact that the God of all peace, the one who shaped Mars, Jupiter and the moon, is our own personal God too? Is any problem too big for Him to handle? And if He permits something, is it not for our best interest? (Romans 8:28, Hebrews 12)

So again, thanks for the prayers . . and partnership — and remember the God who shaped the universe is the one in charge of you!
Your silent friend,
Doug

FROM THE “WHAT IN THE WORLD HAPPENED TO YOUR URL REFERENCES?” DEPARTMENT
Pardon my dust! I’m a tester for Qualcomm and their Alpha release #8 for Eudora Pro 3.0 took some liberties with the URLs in last week’s Brigada Today. Actually, you can fish out the proper URL though, if you’re just willing to weed through the garbage formatting commands. Sorry! I’m back to Version 2.2(32) today!

————————————–

CALLING ALL DONATED CARS (FOR MISSIONARIES)!
car Jim Huggins is curious. “We’ve heard that some auto manufacturers donate cars to non-profit organizations (e.g. cars used for testing have been donated to schools to use in auto repair courses). We wonder: could some of these cars be made available to missionaries? Has anyone out there heard of such a program, or know where to start looking?” Good question, Jim. E-mail responses to Jim Huggins hugginsatumichdotedu. He’ll then summarize any responses for a future Brigada Today. Thanks Jim!

MORE ON INTERNET PHONING
In ongoing discussions about using the Internet to “talk” (like a telephone, if your PC has audio/mic), John Redman says the VocalTec product, Internet Phone 4.0, is the best. For more info, email infoatvocaltecdotcom — but be aware that there’s a charge to this package: $50. I guess premium packages have premium prices? He also referred us to http://www.gxc.com where GXC can hook up your Internet Phone to any telephone in the world . . . for a price.

SMALL GROUP BIBLE STUDIES AND SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSONS ON MISSIONS
Looking for studies on missions for your small group? Check out the new 9-session, inductive Bible Study guide on the thread of missions from Genesis to Revelation called Witnesses to All Nations by Jim and Carol Plueddemann, available from Harold Shaw Publishers, Wheaton, IL for about $5.00. According to a referral from ACMC’s David Mays, “It is excellent.” Also available is Young Hearts for Missions, a curriculum containing 12 lessons for grades 1 – 5. This scripture-focused curriculum contains multi-cultural materials plus twelve true illustrated mission stories from around the world to engage active learning. Music, games, crafts, and reproducible sheets are included in the cost of $29.95. These lessons have been developed to stand alone or can be taught in sequence. Extra materials are suggested to provide enrichment or lengthen an hour presentation. Place your order by calling NextStep Resources 1-800-444-BOOK or write Fay at 102515dot2756atCompuServedotCOM for more info.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
By uniting, Sudan churches prevented a blood-bath this February. The Islamic Sudanese government has been forcing conversion of students between 6 and 12 years old. A regional government representative demanded churches in an area called Rank open their school for Islamic teaching. When the churches refused, he threatened to use force. Later, when the official arrived with the army, he found the members of all the local churches around the school. Because a military action would have caused a blood bath, he withdrew after arresting some of the leaders, who were released a week later. The churches celebrated this as a great victory, although persecution continues across Sudan.

DISCOVERING THE PEOPLE GOD LOVES
How do you get information about a particular people group? We suggest you begin by subscribing to Brigada-peoples, the online people group research conference. Just email hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the body of the message text:
subscribe brigada-peoples

You’ll receive a welcome message that explains how to proceed from there. Basically, you just email brigada-peoplesatxcdotorg with a simple request,
“Please help me learn more about the _(fill in the blank with your people group’s name)____ in __(fill in the blank with your people group’s country of origin)___.” Over 250 researchers and mobilizers will see your request and maybe . . . just maybe . . . one of them will have just the profile you’ve been searching for. If you have access to the web and you think your group might be one of the 1739 groups featured in the Joshua Project 2000 list, go to AD2000 & Beyond’s site at http://www.ad2000.org and drill down to the Joshua Project 2000 site. Either way, you can also go to the People Group Consultant at http://www.xc.org/pgc.html or via email, by sending the request “search __(fill in the exact name of your people group)___” to hubatxcdotorg. If you have trouble getting started or can’t find anything, write the folks at Brigada-peoples, since there might be alternative spellings for your group. NEW DATABASE UPDATE ON THE WORLD’S PEOPLES – FOR U$S 15 !!!
It’s nice to know there are people who want to give something for the cause of world evangelism!!! Here’s a guy who has done years of research and he wants to virtually give it away to you for the cost of the disks! Why??? Because he’s a believer in the CAUSE! Thanks to John Gilbert for making the “Integrated Status of Global Evangelization Annual Report–Electronic Version” available for $15!!! This report is an annual “snapshot” of the status of global evangelization prepared for the Foreign Mission Board. It is based on the levels of evangelization of the world’s peoples and utilizes the Integrated Strategic Planning Database (ISPD). The set of seven diskettes is offered to mission agencies, denominations, and Christian organizations to further facilitate strategic planning for the unfinished task of global evangelization. (You’ll need Windows 3.1 or Win95 to run it.) Throw in $4 and he’ll even send you the associated screen saver disks! :-) And get this!!! Give him $4 more and he’ll send you a 10 megabyte Powerpoint file to present it!!! I’m tellin’ you — when I grow up, I want to be like John Gilbert! Send your check for whatever to Foreign Mission Board, SBC, P.O. Box 6767, Richmond, VA 23230, Fax 804-254-8980, 753-8054atMCIMAILdotCOM.

FOLLOW UP TO “FROM THE “SOMETHING USEFUL FOR 15 CENTS” DEPARTMENT”
Several users gave us other options for on-line internet faxing. The most commonly recommended was Faxaway at https://ronin.kallback.com/faxaway/applic.cgi. (Thanks to John and others for that info!) For info, send email to faxinfoatkomdotnet. This company charges by the exact time used to send your fax, so some insist that it’s cheaper to use than faxSave. Sure enough, when I tried the service, it was a no-brainer! My first fax went through painlessly in just moments . . . and our readers were right . . . they only would have charged 5 cents (instead of the 15 cent minimum on faxSave). However — keep in mind that faxSave is the cheapest to use for the next four days! :-) Their “100,000 free faxes” giveaway ceases on August 1st, so if you want to fax for free big-time, get on board quickly by reading last week’s Brigada Today again! (What?!!! You didn’t save it??? Send email to hubatxcdotorg with only this line:
get brigada brigada-today.960719

Alternatively, you can try http://town.hall.org/ which hooks you up with TPC and all those free fax servers. Why didn’t I think of mentioning that before! :-) Thanks to Wayne from Auckland!!!

Others recommended http://www.hotmail.com which allows you to send email via the web. There’s no email bounce back address, since . . . if you don’t have unlimited web access, you can’t use this service anyway.

“DID YOU KNOW…” (FUN FACTS TO KNOW AND TELL)
Thanks to all who wrote regarding last week’s “Did you know…” Turns out that lots of people and monkeys eat bananas from the bottom, but some apparently break it in half and eat it from the middle! :-) (Would that be “Oreo style”?) But the best response was from Ed who said he had learned to “fellowship with brothers regardless of what end they started at.” :-) Thanks to Amber, Dave, Ed, and all the others who responded!

CURRICULUM IDEAS ANYONE?
Remember back in February, when we had a request for Sunday School missions lessons? Well here’s another one. In the process, we’ll try to get a summary this time: “Greetings. I appreciate your work and that of others in compiling missions news on Brigada. What a wonderful resource for up-to-date news. I am using it for a “Missions Spotlight” insert in our church’s monthly newsletter. I am missions chairman at my church, and we are considering a mission-oriented Sunday school class or mid-week small group. I’m trying to determine if there are any resources for such an endeavor, such as books, study guides, etc. The key goal of the group would be prayer, but also information distribution and perhaps training for individuals going out on short term missions projects. Can you suggest any resources that might be useful. Sincerely, Lyle D. Olson, Brookings, SD.” If you’ve got an idea, write olsonlaturdotsdstatedotedu and Lyle, please get us a summary after two weeks, okay? Thanks!

INPUT SOUGHT FOR MENTORING NEW MISSIONARIES
Thanks to Brigada encouragers! Scott Wood wrote this past week to say, “I have just started getting Brigada Today and absolutely love it. [blush ] I am the Assistant Director of the School Of Missions at Christ For The Nations. What a great resource this is gonna be for us! [blusher ] My job is to get our students to the field in a healthy, responsible way. Our approach is to get a new missionary to the field under a seasoned ministry – on the field they feel called to long-term. At best, we are feeling our way through this process and if anyone has ideas, we would be appreciative. We already have some things in place, but kind of feel like we could use the input Brigada Today people can offer. [blushest ] God bless you for all your doing to help fulfill the Great Commission!” So now that he’s said all this nice stuff, who’s going to write the guy and say something . . . noteworthy!?? :-) Write him at TSWood1962ataoldotcom. And please thank him for the kind words! :-) . . .and Scott, please get us a summarized copy of what you receive, okay? Thanks!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
This year the Global March for Jesus began May 24th, with 50,000 Tongans, led by the King and Queen of Tonga. During the early hours of Saturday morning, millions more Christians marched in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Mongolia, the Philippines and Cambodia. By midnight, Saturday, May 25th, up to 12 million people from 170 nations marched in a massive series of co-ordinated street marches over a 24 hour period. This incredible feat is set to write itself into the history books as the largest mobilization of people for a one-day event in the history of mankind.
