FROM THE “YOU’VE-GOT-TO-ORDER-THIS-VIDEO DEPARTMENT”
Remember Light the Window, which riveted us to pray for the 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window?? Well there’s a sequel!!! And it’s going to be available moments after this announcement! In a Brigada Today exclusive, the producers of To the Ends of the Earth were willing to allow us the privilege of announcing this first class newest prayer video. It’s the resource you’ll use over and over again during the coming 12 months. The story??? “PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW III: THE UNREACHED PEOPLES.” This prayer initiative introduces and develops the concept of “unreached peoples” and challenges the church to be involved in strategic prayer in order to see the Gospel presented, and a culturally relevant, reproducing church established in each of the least evangelized people groups of the 10/40 Window. As in last October’s “Praying Through the Window II: the 100 Gateway Cities”, there is a 30 day prayer guide book available to use with the professionally produced video. The book, simply titled “The Unreached Peoples”, is a 120 page guide focusing on gateway people clusters mainly from within the 10/40 Window and leads the reader through informative prayers for each of these peoples. The video, To the Ends of the Earth , expresses God’s heart from Genesis to Revelation that all peoples (nations or ethne) would worship him. The mobilization of massive, informed, heart felt prayer is the foundation upon which all successful evangelistic efforts for the remaining “unreached people groups” must be built. As in last year’s “Light the Window” video there is a long version suitable for broadcast (approx. 28 minutes long), and a shorter version (approx. 12 minutes long) that you could use for Sunday Schools or worship services.

When I heard about this production, I wrote the producers and asked for a special advance copy to preview, in preparation for a special event we’re launching on Nov. 1st — Envision ’96. They were kind enough to send one pre-production. Wow! First class gang. Same stunning footage, same fast-paced music/video, same heart-piercing message…. pray, pray, pray. This is one to get, gang. Ordering Information: Christian Information Network is the primary distributor of these tools. The book, “The Unreached Peoples” is $8.99 plus Shipping + Handling. You won’t find anything more earthshaking. Bulk order pricing is available. The video, “To the Ends of the Earth” is $9.95 plus S+H. Bulk orders for the video (in case lots of 50) are $5.00 each plus S+H. Credit card orders can be faxed to 719-548-9000. For more information, email 73422dot3471atcompuservedotcom. Or send check orders to:

THE BEST FREE EMAIL FOR THE NEXT 12 MONTHS
… if you live in the USA and are willing to switch back to AT&T for your long distance carrier, then it’s a no-brainer! Run… don’t walk… to call AT&T WorldNet toll-free at 1-800-431-0800 ext. 21627 or see their web site at http://www.att.com/worldnet. With over 300 POPS (“points of presence” — or local phone nodes where you can log on) in the USA, they’ve got most cities covered and you can’t beat the price: FREE!!! If you’re an AT&T long distance customer, you get up to 5 hrs/mo. access for free, and even after that it’s just $2.50 per hour. What’s more, their help desk people told me that you can use any winsock program — so you can use Pegasus, Eudora, Email Connection, Pronto or whichever email program you choose!!! And have you been trying out Juno or Freemark but you’ve been disappointed because they don’t have web access??? Fret no more… AT&T WorldNet lets you have full connectivity — which includes full access to the web. No ads… no gimmicks. Straight www connection. Let’s see. You were subscribing to Compuserve previously, so you were spending $9.95 for 12 months or some $119.40. Now that you’ll be switching to AT&T mail, you first of all pay off your Brigada Today subscription price FOR THE NEXT YEAR with the money you saved right up front! Let’s see… now you’ve got $119.40 remaining. :-) You subscribe to MAFxc so you can have your mail forwarded when you switch addresses like this :-) and so you can start a cool Brigada conference for the unreached people group you want to reach (if you’re interested write to infoatxcdotorg — don’t write to Brigada; we don’t work for MAF!), . . . that’s $52 for a full year … which still leaves you $67.40. Can you believe you were about to pay more for your email service than you would have for an xc.org address and a cool Brigada email conference of your own???? Next, you can take your wife (or husband, . . . whichever the case may be :-) ) out to eat at a nice restaurant three times … spend about $20/instance, . . . and still have $7.40 left over to open a bank account to start saving for your next family car!!! Now what a deal, folks! :-) And that was money you were going to spend anyway!!! Seriously, why would anyone want to keep paying $9.95 for a Compuserve or AOL connection… which is still only going to give you the same number of hours of free connectivity to the Internet????!!! Duh… Get it for free folks.. from AT&T. If they want to give this stuff away, gang, I say we support their crazy habit! :-) One catch… after the first year, they start charging. :-( But if you buy the xc.org address, then next year this time, you switch to some other looney tune who is running the same kind of special… and none of your friends even know it because you’ve got a stable email address with MAFxc! Too good to be true??? Check me out. It’s for real.

LUIS BUSH REQUESTS PRAYER…
Luis Bush, Director of the AD2000 & Beyond Movement, wrote this past week to request prayer for the National Consultation of Evangelism, which continues through September 29. According to Luis, “This is a crucial meeting with great potential for harvesting of the fields of India over the next few years. In the words of Ebe Sunde Raj, General Secretary of the IMA, the sponsoring body for the consultation, ‘The Lord has enabled us to see the progress in several fronts and failures and mistakes in others. We trust that this consultation will facilitate all of us to share our success and failures, wisdom and blunders to learn from one another, plan together and enter into partnership to reach our mother land with the gospel.’ Please take a moment right now and bow in prayer for Luis and all others who have gathered there. In his opening, keynote address, Luis wrote, “This is a unique moment in India. The Spirit of God is moving, perhaps as never before. The church in India is stirring and reaching out. And the threat of militant Hindu fundamentalism looms across the landscape. For now, there is a window still open in India. Let us say with the Apostle Paul ‘And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand:’ (Romans 13:11-12) We must do what we can when we can. Now is India’s time. We dare not let it pass.” We agree Luis. 100% with you.

MORE ON TRAVELING EMAIL
Last week we mentioned that several services would provide you with a forwarding function… so that whichever email address you chose to use, you could redirect your mail to that address. What we didn’t mention was that MAFxc’s service can make it look like you’re writing from that address, even if you aren’t! :-) You send your outbound email through their server with a special command and the mail actually looks like it originated from your xc.org address. Pete Holzmann, who reminded me of this difference, doesn’t know of any other service on the net that’s letting you pull that off. Thanks for the clarification, Pete. In other news, Bill Crandall (a missionary in Ecuador) suggested we look at http://netaddress.usa.net as a possible alternative. These guys give you a free address forwarding service, then tack on a small advertisement at the end of each forwarded note. I tried it for awhile, … and for the most part it works. It did introduce quite a delay in the mail at times, evidently depending on how busy their hub is. Thanks Bill!

CIN ANNOUNCES INTERNATIONAL PRAYER TRAINING CONFERENCE
Bev Pegues wrote yesterday afternoon to clue us in on a conference that sounds like it should make its way onto the calendars of all worldwide prayer intercessors! She wrote, “An international prayer training conference has been scheduled for Wednesday, February 12th, through Saturday, February 15, 1997, entitled “Praying With Power: Empowering Ordinary People for Extraordinary Exploits.” The conference will be held at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and is sponsored by the Christian Information Network and the World Prayer Center. This practical training conference is for prayer journeyers and home-based intercessors (those who stay home and pray) and is designed to equip believers to pray effectively and to empower teams to pray on the field. C. Peter Wagner will be convening the conference. A list of speakers and plenary sessions will soon be released, along with details of cost and schedule. Please contact Christian Information Network at 73422dot3471atcompuservedotcom and give them your mailing address. That way you can be sure to receive the information as soon as it is available. Please reserve these dates on your calendar for this conference. This will give you the training you need for participating in PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW III: THE UNREACHED PEOPLES, the prayer emphasis that takes place from October 1, 1996, until October 31, 1997.” Spread the news!

WEBWATCH
One user recommended we look at http://members.tripod.com/~jroberts to see more info. on the issue of ANONYMOUS traveling email addresses, which encode email with a password so that only the intended email recipient can read the message. And Chris Hart recommended http://www.four11.com/ for “finding people” — like your long, lost Uncle Bob??? :-) And here’s something interesting. Our Brigada web specialist (may he live forever! :-) ) uncovered a “Spanish, Portuguese, And Catalan Search Engine at http://www.ogilvy.com/spanish/hisplink.htm. Evidently, you can delve through “all 31 search engines of the Spanish/Portuguese/Catalan world.” Email Luis Delboy ledelboyatearthlinkdotnet for info. Thanks Bob!

NEW MOVIE ABOUT PROBLEMS FOR MUSLIM CONVERTS
Open Doors has produced a video called “Behind the Sun”. According to Rick Nolte, “It is an excellent presentation of the problems that national believers in Muslim countries are facing. The video chronicles the adventures/trials of a man returning to his home (Muslim) country after converting to Christianity during his college days in the US. It is about 1 hour long, and is extremely well done (I’ve heard over $1 million was spent to make the video). Although the man’s story is fictional (I think), the events/situations that he encounters are not – according to those familiar with the middle-east.” Rick “highly recommends” this video. It is both informative and exciting. Open Doors can be reached at 1-800-788-5574 in the USA. Rick can probably direct you to other contact points — write him at RickdotCdotNolteatdendotmmcdotcom. Thanks Rick!

AUSSIES LAUNCH NEW FRONTIER MEDIA SCHOOL
Straight from down under comes this note: “To Every Peoples…Together we Can do it! All of us are needed to do our part and implement new initiatives to finish the task of world evangelization. In answer to that call, we have started a yearly School of Frontier Media (SFM) in Perth, Western Australia. The next school runs from January 12th to June 27th, 1997. It has been fully accredited with the University of the Nation, both under the College of Christian Ministries and the College of Communications. For more information, contact ConkeyCreateatXCdotOrg or see the web site at http://www.iinet.net.au/~createit.” Way to go Aussies!

AUDIO SCRIPTURE ORGS TO MERGE
In just a few short days, Audio Scriptures International (ASI) and PRM International (PRM-I) will merge. The name of the new organization will be AUDIO SCRIPTURE MINISTRIES (ASM), an organization committed to making a major worldwide effort to see that all translated New Testaments available in print form are also recorded and made available in audio form. According to Harvey T. Hoekstra, former President of ASI, “This effort arises from a conviction that we now have the means to give non-readers the same opportunity to learn God’s word by listening as readers have by reading. It is a doable task and ASM hopes to network with others in a revitalized effort to help facilitate this foundational effort.” The home office of the new organization will be in the former PRM-I facility in Holland, MI. The audio Scripture distribution/resource center will be from the former ASI location in California. For more information about ASM’s free catalog and its special arrangements of Scripture on cassette for use as evangelistic tools to cross the linguistic barrier in ethnic ministries, see their website http://www.goshen.net/AudioScriptures.

NOW YOU CAN GET GENERATION X INFO IN MAGAZINE FORM!
Thanks to Michael Schwartz, of Caleb Project, who has launched VOX Magazine. According to Michael, “It is the first-ever GenX magazine challenging Christians to live radically for Christ and take the Gospel to the world! It is written by Gen X to Gen X. Our first issue is going to print mid-October and will be FREELY distributed to 20,000 by November 1. If anyone wants a free copy they can email me at voxatcprojectdotcom or check out our web site at www.goshen.net/calebproject/vox. ” Thanks for your work, Michael!

NEED HELP WITH PROBLEMS??? THIS CONFERENCE CAN ANSWER!
MTI is hosting an Interpersonal Skills Workshop for Missionaries, Colorado Springs, October 21-25, 1996. A few openings are still available. This is a very interactive, practical workshop designed especially to help missionaries and missionary leaders become more effective. The four and one-half days deal with issues such as confronting, conflict management, stress, drawing others out, problem solving, handling grief, moral purity, and more. This workshop is for active missionaries, missionary candidates and trainees, and missionary leaders. Trainers will be Ken Williams, Ph.D., an International Trainer with Wycliffe, Leta Van Meter, M.A., Coordinator of Career Development with OC International, and Karen Carr, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and experienced missionary trainer. For more information, contact Missionary Training International at 800-896-3710 in the USA, or at Minternataoldotcom. Another such workshop is planned for March 10-14, 1997.

CLARIFIED ADDRESS FOR CYBERSPACE STUDY CANDIDATES
If you were interested in Trinity’s online theological education, please don’t contact <73524dot1100atCompuServedotcom>. Write to Dr. Dennis Frey 74774dot3051atcompuservedotcom instead. Dr. Frey is Dean for the cyberspace program. I guess Brigada Today readers really do read this stuff! The first address was “overwhelmed by requests” and got tired of forwarding them! :-) Sorry!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
“Missions researchers have agreed on a working database of 1,739 ethnic groups from 133 countries as those who most need missions efforts. This, the Joshua Project 2000 list, is the first ever database with wide acceptance in the missions community which actually puts a priority on certain unreached groups. Of the 2.2 billion people on the list, almost half of the world’s population, a full 7% have no reported Christians or Christian work among them at all. 430 million (more than half of 1,739 the groups) have no church whatsoever. The good news is that 85% of that 2.2 billion have some kind of ministry tools in their language, including Bibles, Bible portions, cassettes, radio programs or the Jesus film. Unfortunately, half of the people groups do not have any such tools. It is also of note that 14% (246) of the JP groups (6% or 128 million of the JP population) have an established church, but no ministry tools. How can it be that people are coming to Christ and forming churches without Bibles, Bible portions, cassettes, radio programs or the Jesus film? Hmmmm…”
Global Glimpse is compiled each week by John Hanna JHannaatXCdotOrg, Caleb Project, Littleton, CO. You can see Caleb Project’s web site at http://www.goshen.net/calebproject. What a faithful partner he is to Brigada Today. Thanks John.

HUBMARKS
As we round the corner and head toward the 3600 mark, it occurred to us that today, Sept. 21, the Brigada family of networks is officially 18 months old. All of a sudden we realized that this translates into an average growth (in sheer number of participants) of just over 200 new members per month since our beginnings on March 21, 1995. Basically all of this growth has occurred through word of mouth… or should we say, word of “keyboard”, since Brigada itself is a free service with no marketing budget. 99% of the promotion has been done by friends and “believers in the cause” of least reached peoples. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to all those who have forwarded Brigada Today issues to friends, as well as to those who have published info. about Brigada in their periodicals (especially to Mission Frontiers of the US Center for World Mission). Finally, thanks to all the conference moderators in the Brigada system. Since new conference participants aren’t automatically subscribed to this “top level”, in the end, it’s up to the moderator to encourage all the subscribers in that discussion to join Brigada — and for these and many other helpers, we give thanks! As a result, from this day forward, anyone who refers a new subscriber to us will hereby receive a total rebate on the next year’s subscription to Brigada Today — which won’t even buy you a cup of coffee in your local cafe! :-)

FREE CHRISTIAN MUSIC FOR MISSIONARIES
Get this!!! Music for Missions (MfM) pgarrattatmfmdotcccdotgendotnz seeks “to bless and encourage missionaries – especially those in isolated or hostile environments – to help better equip them in personal (and public) praise, worship and service. We seek to do this by sending, without cost to the recipient, encouraging and challenging praise and worship style music cassettes that are available to ANY missionary who asks to be included.” Here’s the scoop. Five or six tapes are sent each year including a children’s tape for Christmas to those who request it. Paul wrote to Brigada Today, “Currently, we post to about 2,600 missionaries of about 195 denominations and organisations, working in about 150 different countries. So the music can be learned, played and taught to local Christians, we send the wordsheet, with the guitar cords, for all songs. The letter with the tape is another vehicle for encouragement, with brief thoughts from the Word of God and a pastoral message from a former missionary.” How do they afford to do it? MfM is a sponsorship activity. Paul explained, “While God is our supply, we also seek interested Christians who will sponsor a missionary or missionary family for $3.00 per month to 1 August, then $36.00 per year.” However, he insisted that “There is NOT an obligation for the missionary to find a sponsor!” So gang, here’s your change! If you know of other missionaries who you think might like to be included, please tell them about MfM’s offer, and/or send Paul their names and addresses. Paul also adds, “Obviously, if you or someone you know would also like to sponsor them, then that would be even better!” :-) Contact pgarrattatmfmdotcccdotgendotnz directly for further information. And Paul — thanks, brother!!! Great service! Now we know the true meaning of “Southern Hospitality”… New Zealand style!!! :-) Don’t forget to tell Paul where you heard about it! Maybe he’ll dedicate his next CD to least reached peoples! :-)

GOT ACCESS TO THE WEB? WANT A TRAVELING EMAIL ADDRESS? TRY HoTMaiL
Here’s a new alternative for those wanting an anonymous email address or those computing from more than one location. Collect all your mail in one common set of folders on HoTMaiL. Point your web browser to http://www.hotmail.com/ — but you probably could have figured that out on your own, right? Once you fill out the form (that doesn’t ask for your credit card or social security number, by the way), you get a registration number emailed back to you — which you then feed back into yet another form and … presto-change-o … you have a new email address. Just for fun, I’m douglucasathotmaildotcom — but you can name yourself anything you like… even, I suppose, … if you want to set up a greeting card business, that is. Anyway, it’s great for those who have to do email from various locations and various computers. Only trick is… you need web access . .. and you probably want it fee-free, since you compose online instead of offline. (That’s a bit of a problem for all those “under the clock”.) We thought at first that this would be great for missionaries working in sensitive areas . . . yet with web access . . . but then we realized that, even though all mail is stored on the HoTMaiL server and not on your own hard drive (attractive at first, right?), the text still has to pass through your internet server and phone line without protection… so once again, if there’s anyone wanting to learn about how many baptisms you’ve had, they’d conceivably be able to do it. Still, . . . it’s probably a bit safer than to store everything locally, assuming you’re concerned about your computer being examined someday. ‘Course then there’s always a chance that some Muslim extremist will someday by 100% stock in HoTMaiL! :-) Try it — it’s a fun idea… and it’s really lightning fast (but not as fast as the email program on your desktop). Full set of folders and full set of reply options.

————————————–

OTHER OPTIONS FOR “TRAVELING ADDRESSES”
Send email to infoatpoboxdotcom (subject and text are ignored) for information on POBox.com, a $15/year service that gives you a forwarding mail internet connection. (Thanks to “JohnN” at JohnNatpoboxdotcom for the tip!) MAFxc does the same thing (with an xc.org address) for around $15/year as well… if you only want the traveling address and not email conferencing (they sell both services for $52/year). To receive more info. re: MAFxc send email to helpdeskatxcdotorg.

COMBINING THE ARTS IN MINISTRY, MOBILIZING THOSE CALLED TO MISSIONS
Songwriter and performer RuthAnn has recorded her first CD and will be doing a concert tour on the US mainland, Oct. 2nd through Oct. 23rd. This all began when she offered to do a concert to help raise support for YWAM volunteer staff, Karen Goodell. So as God has put on Karen’s heart His desire to minister through the arts combined, they put together a night of live music, mime, and slide presentation. It was well received, and now God is opening doors for more concerts. Joining together in a divine way, RuthAnn’s ministry focus to the hurting, and Karen’s desire to mobilize those whom God is calling to serve or support missions. They believe God is desiring to mobilize the youth especially during this tour, and that God is raising up a new wave of young people to YWAM base in Kona, Hawaii. But they are a hurting generation of people, that God desires to minister to through RuthAnn’s music and testimony.

The tour begins in Oct 2nd -10th in Los Angelos, California area, Pepperdine University; then up the coast Oct. 10th – 16th to Washington, then over to Billings, Montana by the 19th for a Youth Rally. They still hope to fill in some dates if anyone would like to host them, or provide a place to stay along there travels. Contact Karen before Oct 2nd when she leaves Kona: kvakarenataoldotcom or contact Artie after Oct. 2nd: aexumatpepperdinedotedu.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE TOWARD THE HEAVENS!
More than 1,000 people came to Christ and 21 new churches were started in Cambodia when a team of student missionaries joined Cambodian believers in an evangelism project in June. The team’s first stop was at a temple in Phnom Penh, where they circled the Buddha idol and claimed the country for Christ.

NEW WEEKLY COLUMN BY JUSTIN LONG – QUICKQUOTE
Justin Long writes, “Context is important to understanding a statistic. 159,000 martyrs per annum sounds terrible (and is): but it works out to just 83 per million Christians. North America’s 72,000 missionaries sounds tremendous–but it’s only 302 per million, or 0.03% of North America’s total Christian population. The figures show we’re sending large numbers, but the context shows we could do a lot better.” (Starting today, Justin Long, of David Barrett’s GEM Communications, will be writing QUICKNOTE for Brigada Today readers! Look for it each week!

URGENT PRAYER REQUEST FOR A YWAM TEAM IN INDIA
On September 1, 150 men armed with machettes surrounded the premises occupied by a YWAM team in India. The mob had been incited by another religious group in an effort to chase them off. As the mob pressed in, someone at a key moment spoke up on the team’s behalf and they decided to give them 30 days to leave. The team feels they should not leave and that their ministry work in the city is at stake. Much fruit has been seen in a previously unreached region and there is great potential for more. In addition to future of the work, the situation is very dangerous. In the past when violence has broken out between rival religious groups, people have lost their lives. As we near the end of the deadline at the end of this month, would you join us in prayer for this team? Please pray for:

* The rival religious group,
* Protection of the lives of the team members,
* God’s intervention,
* A positive victory in spiritual warfare through this conflict,

OOPS!!! FROM THE “BERMUDA TRIANGLE MAIL DEPARTMENT”
Last month we ran an announcement from Kimberly Hurst for the National Short-Term Mission Conference in Los Angeles, Jan 17-19. This week Kimberly writes, “I got about 40 requests for brochures…As I was emailing them to the guy that’s building the data base, about 20 of them got lost, and I don’t seem to have a record of the lost files.” She KINDLY asks that everyone who contacted her concerning this conference please CONTACT HER AGAIN if at all possible at KJHurstataoldotcom — and please keep an eye out for floating email! :-)

HUBMARKS
Today we cross a couple of landmarks, or, “hubmarks” as it were! Over 3500 subscribers now participate in Brigada conferences… and, from the very first Brigada Today (18th of Feb., 1995) ’til today, about 300 pages of resources, news, and referrals have been sent out to enthusiastic Brigada participants all over the world! To see these back issues, go to the Brigada web site, or send an email message with text
get brigada help-detailed

to hubatxcdotorg to find out how to use email commands to download previous issues, all archived on the Brigada hub and ready for retrieval!

TWO FOR ONE SALE CONCLUDES – USERS ONLY GET ONE BRIGADA TODAY TODAY
:-) Yikes gang. There’s egg all over my face and it doesn’t come from the morning’s omelet! Thanks for your grace and forgiveness for the clutter of a second “bounced” Brigada Today (a “two-for-one sale???”), which, as most figured out, resulted from a Brigada participant’s email address “malfunctioning” and sending back a “bounced” message to the Brigada server. The surprising thing is… we receive literally dozens of these bounces in a typical week and all of them are dutifully routed automatically by the server to our faithful Customer Service Manager, Revis Ann Massey RevisAnnMasseyatxcdotorg. However for the last two weeks, a single user’s email handler had somehow “outsmarted” the special intercepting software and had incredibly bypassed the required “approval” password routine, thus sending out hundreds…. thousands of pieces of mail by mistake! We’ve sleuthed out the culprit and unsubscribed him… a unique situation where his email handler would dial him up and send his email to him overseas! MAFxc personnel are still perplexed as to how his message beat their “gateway” and outsmarted the password-protection that’s supposed to prevent such errors. Either way, we apologize … and thanks for your forgiveness! Hopefully, you won’t see a duplicate today! :-)

PULL UP A CHAIR, LOG ON, AND GRAB THE COMMUNION CUPS, HONEY!
That’s right. Soon you can attend church via computer, watching the entire worship “online”! First you’ll need to stop by http://www.vdo.net/download/ on the web and pick up a copy of VDOLive Video Player, which plays streaming (somewhatcompressed) video over the Internet. Then you can go to a site like http://citv.com/ to log on to “live” church over the Net!

What’s the advantage over TV? I’m not sure. I guess the preacher can always conduct live online surveys, to which you as a participant can answer back instantly? Or maybe at invitation time, you can type in the sins of which you’re repenting??? I jest. I think there’s a future for this technology, but I’m not sure online church services would draw me. I mean, if I can flip on the TV and see the Crystal Cathedral just fine, why would I want to draw my family around the laptop screen?

But as Chris Templar pointed out this past week, there just might be a future for this technology in missions education . . . or education for Missionary Kids! Chris wrote, “At 28.8 its still a little jerky, but on my portable I could watch for 8 hours with only two breaks, and apart from information overload by the end, got a lot of free tuition from experts for nothing!!” Imagine tuning in over the web to your child’s instructor for Spanish class… and you live in Japan! … or tune in to your favorite class at Fuller, though you’re posted in Ukraine! And when you want, just send in a question to the special address at the bottom of the screen… Low and behold, in a few seconds, the prof’ says, “Now here’s an interesting question from Kiev….” Shazam! Your question’s answered! :-) Now that would be mission education at a distance, wouldn’t it! Will it happen, most assuredly. Anytime soon? Not sure. First, the world needs the web! Second, someone has to figure out how to pay for all this stuff! In the meantime, enjoy it as a toy… kind of the way the first airplane pilots did with the Wright brothers’ new toy… or the way those first few phonograph cylinders sounded on Edison’s player. In 10 years though, it’ll be common place!!! And if you’ve already got video web-cast plans in your seminary’s crystal ball’s future, drop Chris Templar a note at ctemplaratjbcdotedu. Chris, let us know if you hear back, okay? Thanks for the interesting query!

————————————–

IS THERE A SEMINARY PH.D. PROGRAM ONLINE?
Yes… Alvin Low 73524dot1100atCompuServedotCOM reports, ” Yes, Trinity Theological Seminary in Indiana has PhD program by extension. … Just GO….TDELTA and view their programs.” Thanks Alvin. And Bob Garrett says Southwestern’s DMin might be a good substitute (write wmcatswbtsdotswbtsdotedu for more info).

A GOOD BOOK A DAY
One reader recommends you curl up on one of these cool fall evenings with Honey, We’re Going to Africa!, from Winepress Publishing ($13). (‘Course, if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, you can read on a spring morning??? …and if you’re reading from the equator, you can curl up beside the ice block???) Reportedly highly praised by Dr. Ralph Winter, Dr. Charles Van Engen and by Dr. Roger Greenway. Write ASINTLatxcdotorg for more info. or check your local Bible Bookstore.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM A FLASHPOINT
Open Doors reports that the evangelical church in Basra, a city in Iraq near its border with Kuwait, has experienced wonderful growth. A few years ago the church there consisted of only two families meeting in a dilapidated church, but now has sixty families. They built a new church building in a convenient area of the city, partly with government assistance. Open Doors had delivered 30 tons of bibles and books to Baghdad in spring 1996, where the Bible was the most requested book at a book fair.

Global Glimpse is compiled each week by John Hanna, Caleb Project, Littleton, CO — jhannaatcprojectdotcom.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH 12 PALLETS OF OLD GERMAN BIBLES???
… tell someone on Brigada, that’s what! Brigada participant Jerry Kingery jerrykatbfdotorg, of Bible Foundation, has a line on 12 pallets of “old German Bibles (old script), hymnals, etc. available in Missouri.” Apparently, the source is open to contributing something toward freight! Write Jerry for details.

ADVANCE THE CAUSE!
Advance editor, Mark Kelly, sent a special prayer request this week: “Turmoil in northern Iraq threatens to destroy the young churches established there in recent years. The translation Gospel of John came off the printing press just as the fighting erupted, and the New Testament is only a couple of months from completion. Violence has forced expatriate workers to withdraw. Ask God to continue the good work he has begun in the lives of Kurdish believers and to strengthen them for the trials ahead. Pray that their numbers would multiply in the face of hardship.”

Here’s the summary for this month’s Advance: ADVANCE: Praying for unreached peoples and persecuted believers Summary: September 1996

THE GOSPEL FOR EVERY PEOPLE — 300 churches organized in Hong Kong; God turns adversity into salvation in Benin; 600 decisions for Christ in Thai prisons; new radio station can reach 1 million Islamic Kurds; 40 million speak Kannada language; 120,000 Adegei in Caucasus Mountains.

THE PERSECUTED CHURCH — 13 believers held in Vietnam; Muslim militants murdered two Coptic Christians; Amnesty International report criticizes China; believers in Cuba forced to dismantle their own facility; Robert Hussein flees Kuwait.

SPIRITUAL FORCES OF DARKNESS — Slavery in Mauritania; starvation in northern Liberia; evangelical abortion rates; “Chaos Days” in Germany; compulsive gambling in USA; “Daddy’s Wedding.”

REJOICE! — Church growth in Basra, Iraq; healing in Ghana; 1,000 came to Christ in Cambodia; believer freed; desert village assists American congregation.

NETWORKING — Missions Bible studies; e-mail discussion on street children; free subscription to Voice of the Martyrs Newsletter; insight for Christians interested in witnessing to Muslims; Urbana ’96 missions convention; National Short-Term Missions Conference; low-cost computer-radio transmitter; Global School of Evangelism via the Internet; CD-ROM language program available at discount; Christian Reporter Web site.

FRONT LINES — Jesus’ message.

To download the full version of Advance, send email to hubatxcdotorg with only the words
get brigada advance.9609

in the text of the message (without quotes). Could we send the full text out to Brigada participants? Sure… but not all would want to receive the entire journal, we reason. This gives you the choice… and you only have to type in 3 words to receive it. Your call.
Thanks to Mark Kelly 70420dot1057atCompuServedotCOM for a great job month after month!

THE GOSPEL IN DRAMA READY TO GO INTERNATIONALLY
Bryan Perrier ventureatmindlinkdotbcdotca writes about a dramatic dance production, “The Crown”, that has struck a chord for the local area… and now Bryan, his wife, and their drama team are trying to discern where God could use them internationally. If you have an option, write Bryan directly for more info.

————————————–

SEND AND RECEIVE EMAIL IN HEBREW!
Our capable moderator for Brigada-Peoples sent along a tip this week that at http://www.hevanet.com/dshivers/mikhtav, developers have pulled together “Mikhtav,” Hebrew for the word “letter.” The site apparently includes discussions about topics of Israeli Jewish interest in Hebrew using Hebrew letters, instead of Latin transliteration. The site contains all of the software utilities that you will need to communicate on the list — downloadable software for Macintosh, PC or Unix Shell accounts. Thanks Chris!

REACH NUREMBERG TO REACH OUT
In October the in city of Fuerth (next door to Nuremberg) a Missions conference organized by the German branch of “On Eagles Wings” plus a dozen or more different churches in the area will take place. Topics include: the local church as a basis for Missions, Prayer that changes the world, strategies to reach the unreached, Mission in the power of the Holy Spirit. Speakers are: George Otis, Douglas Layton, Walter Heidenreich, John MacFarlane, Hartwig Henkel and others. The organizers hope and pray for 1000 participants but so far only about 400 applications have come in…(please pray). Probably the most remarkable thing about the conference is the location. Brigada’s “European Correspondent” :-) , Kerstin Hack, writes, “It is the first major Missions conference in the city of Nuremberg. To us in Germany this is historic. Whereas Berlin used to be the strategic headquarters of the Nazi powers, Nuremberg always was the spiritual headquarters in which all the worship of Hitler took place and from which the horrible Nazi propaganda went out to the whole of Germany and the rest of the World. We hope and pray that the Lord will use this conference to break the curses of the past and turn this city (and our nation) into a spiritual headquarters for Missions reaching the ends of the earth with salvation. Hail to Jesus and Jesus alone….” Dates are October 2 – 5, 1996 — “Reach out ’96” Missions conference in Nuremberg, Germany. Kerstin, if I could be there, I would! Thanks! Kerstin is at 100711dot2622atCompuServedotCOM. And my voice is much better Kerstin. Thanks for asking!

LEST WE FORGET THOSE UNDER PERSECUTION
The International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church is to be held September 29, 1996. This is an event, called by World Evangelical Fellowship, has dozens of endorsing agencies and organizations, from the Southern Baptist Convention and the Assemblies of God, to Prison Fellowship International and Campus Crusade. More Christians have been killed in situations related to their faith in the 20th century than the previous nineteen combined! At least 150,000 churches from over 100 countries will be praying on the same day (Sept. 29) for the plight of Christians who are discriminated, harassed and persecuted for the faith in Christ. Please join them! For materials call (toll free in the USA) 1-888/Lets-Pray. For more information call WEF at 630/668-0440 or e-mail BrianOConnellatxcdotorg.

MORE ON PATTERSON MATERIAL
Thanks to Ian Benson coordmtsatxcdotorg for this additional info. on Patterson’s training materials — very fascinating and seemingly very effective wherever they are used! “The 62 booklets to which Brigada referred are part of an activity-oriented pastoral training programme designed to foster a movement for church multiplication. By God’s grace, they have been successfully used in Latin America, Asia and Europe in different contexts.

The programme was first developed by Dr George Patterson in Central America where he established about 100 churches over 20 years. Other users of the materials have had even greater success in church planting. The original materials were edited by a team of experienced SEAN TEE writers including George Patterson himself. The present revised version is produced by the Missionary Training Service, an organization dedicated to the training of workers for the unevangelised world.

The Church Planting Guide, which is part of the set, has been used to begin several thousand churches around the world. This is also sold separately at US$9.50 including airmail postage worldwide.

The full set of 62 booklets, including airmail postage, costs US$130. This includes the Pastoral Trainer’s Manual which explains the whole programme, the Student Activity Guide which is the activity-based curriculum, and all the booklets divided into two levels. … We hope that the materials will soon be available with Black African drawings, and in French too. We have contacts with people preparing the materials in Hindi, Turkish, Thai and other languages. Licenses to translate and/or produce the materials usually start at US$150.” Ian has more information on pricing. If you intend to buy, make sure you write him first at coordmtsatxcdotorg for instructions on payment. Thanks Ian! I continue to be fascinated by the results of this unique training curriculum!

WHAT TO DO ABOUT NORTH KOREA
Gary Russell garydotrussellatcbndotorg writes “150+ people/day are dying of starvation in North Korea, where a sizable underground church has survived and is growing. Does anyone know a source of surplus grain? Christian friends can arrange shipping of up to 20,000 tons if the grain is donated. Write garydotrussellatcbndotorg or, in the USA, call 1-800-715-3292.

WATCH THOSE REPLIES ON NON-MODERATED CONFERENCES
As you know, Brigada’s top level, which puts out this Brigada Today, is a moderated conference, meaning that a special “approval” line (with a password) is required [MOST of the time :-) for messages to be passed to subscribers. But zillions of Brigada conferences operate on literally a daily basis to do most of the actual work of Brigada — that of linking up people with a common affinity or love for some least reached people. Many of these conferences are unmoderated, meaning that any message to the conference is passed out to all those who have joined. It’s worth our while, every so often, to remind Brigada participants to be careful with their use of the “reply” button when reading these conferences. User Jim Nickel wrote this week, “I’ve noticed a number of what appear to be personal messages or replies appearing on certain conferences. Let’s remember that messages posted to a conference or sent as replies to messages posted to a conference go to everyone. If the message is not something that everyone on the conference needs, may I suggest that it be sent to the personal address of the addressee, which can always be found in the header of the message under “originally from.” Some of us have quite a bit of e-mail to wade through, and it becomes quite a time- and $$-waster to have to download & read mail not meant for us.” Well-said, Jim. Many agree. So… use the conference… wisely!

MEDICAL MISSIONS CONFERENCE WILL BE HERE IN A HEARTBEAT
Don’t forget about Southeast Christian Church’s one-day conference on medical missions, November 16. The course has been developed for all medical personnel including physicians, nurses, and medical support personnel to provide practical information regarding diagnosis and treatment of diseases seen in mission areas of the world where diagnostic equipment is limited and to develop a proper perspective on medical missions in the overall context of the evangelization of unreached peoples.

Four speakers with expertise in tropical medicine, parasitology, infectious disease, pediatrics, and obstetrics-gynecology as well as practical experience in the medical mission field will give us advice on how to practice medicine in these areas of the world where modern diagnostic equipment and the latest in treatment modalities are not available. Our keynote speaker will examine the role of the health professional as a missionary for God by integrating his or her faith in Him with their professional skills in treating the whole person, not just a patient with a medical illness. … Believe it or not, it’s free! For a brochure or for more information about the course, call Stephanie Garling at 502-451-5317 ext. 725 or write to: Southeast Christian Church, Missions Committee, 2840 Hikes Lane, Louisville, Kentucky, 40218.

GET THE COLD, HARD FACTS IN CHILI
The Iberoamerican Institute, located in Santiago, Chile, begins its third year of operation in March 1997, and is seeking motivated and qualified students for the nine-month term. The institute is designed to allow the student to test his or her desire to be a cross-cultural minister, without sensing failure if the answer is “no.”

North American and Latin American students study together and work together, designing strategies for service and evangelism, and executing the plans. The length of the Institute term gives the students the opportunity to experience fully the first wave of “culture shock,” and to overcome it productively with the help of the Institute staff. The students gain a confidence in their identity with Christ which will serve equally well in the mission field or in the local church.

Students must be 19 years or older, single or married, with a strong recommendation from an elder, or other spiritual leader. Each student will be required to raise support as a missionary, and will be required to demonstrate accountability to his or her supporters.

Deadline for letters of intent is January 10, 1997. Applications and further information are available by contacting Dr. James Green, Director, Iberoamerican Institute e-mail: fcabezasatlascardotpucdotcl.

Using this system, the traveler doesn’t get bogged down reading everyone’s proposed itineraries! :-) For the travel agent, it’s a winner . . . because he or she wants to find people ready to buy tickets! For the agent, Brigada-travel-bids is the place to be! (Those familiar with Brigada conferences might think… now how can a user’s message hit the conference if he or she isn’t subscribed, . . . but in this case, MAFxc folks and moderator Mark Fremer have overridden normal MAFxc protocol so that the user’s time is maximized. After all, maximizing communication and time is what MAFxc is all about! :-) )

! CAUTION: Because these are “open” conferences, material submitted to the conferences is open for examination by anyone on the Internet, as is any Internet message. We do not regulate who joins the conferences. Hence, you may want to be careful what you disclose to the public. If you have any doubts, please write the moderator first, Fremeratxcdotorg (Mark Fremer). Or, if you’re traveling to a sensitive area and don’t want the world to know, just ask a friend with a “safe address” to send in the request for quotes and receive the bids for you. Have the secretary at your office pick it up . . . or get a MAFxc address for a few quarters and stay anonymous! :-) (For more information on picking up an anonymous *.xc.org address, write helpdeskatxcdotorg. And in case you’re wondering, I don’t work for MAFxc. :-) ) Now, the most important matter at hand . . . a big tip of the hat to Mark Fremer for taking on the moderatorship of these conferences as a ministry! By the way, in case you’re wondering, Mark isn’t a travel agent! :-)

THAT’S IT FOR HUSSEIN
The folks from WEF’s Religious Liberty Commission are now telling the world to stop advocating for Hussein, the Kuwaiti persecuted believer turned refugee in America. For our purposes on Brigada, we’re just going to report the quote and not get into a seat of judgment . . . According to the RLC, Hussein left Kuwait “without the knowledge of the church, and under circumstances that the Church would not have approved of had they known.” For the full report, send email to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the message:

HUNGARY CHRISTIANS HUNGER TO REACH THE WORLD
At a conference in Hungary (May 1996, sponsored by the Great Commission Center) Hungarian Christians issued a conference declaration “For the 1100 Years old Hungary’s Evangelization AD2000 and Beyond”. Among other things it states: “6. We confess that – although we saw the great spiritual need around us, we didn’t do everything as members of the church to be renewed in our faith and now commit ourselves to the work of God – to save perishing souls. Therefore we make every effort to make an evangelistic strategy for the completing of the Great Commandment of Jesus Christ priority in our ministry.” The full text (in English) is available at “Great Commission Center, 769 Orchid Hill Lane, Argyle (Copper Canyon), TX 76226, USA. Our European correspondent (doesn’t that sound like some great big international media network??? :-) ), Kerstin Hack, reported, “Although it was only a small conference (180 attendants) it shows that there is a growing interest in Missions in Eastern European countries – which is a great encouragement as we need their input, faith and endurance to join the other nations in the task of fulfilling the great Commission.” Thanks for being there and filing a report, Kerstin!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
A year before Hong Kong reverts to Chinese rule, 1,800 delegates gathered in Hong Kong for the Fifth Chinese Congress on World Evangelisation (CCOWE), July 10-16. Held every five years, this conference is part of a movement to unify the Chinese church toward missions. Fai Luk, Hong Kong pastor and congress planning committee member, said that while CCOWE has helped to unify the church in Hong Kong “under one banner.” This is especially critical now as Christians across Hong Kong are looking toward life under Communist rule.

Global Glimpse is gathered each week by John Hanna Caleb Project Littleton, CO.

MICKEY WON’T MEET THE CHINESE! 8:-( [that’s a sad Mickey]
Remember reading (in Brigada Today, 16th of August 1996) that International Students, Inc., in conjunction with several other ministry partners will be hosting an evangelistic world view conference for Mainland Chinese students and scholars from June 20-27 in San Diego, California? The conference, entitled “China ’97…At the Crossroads” will highlight the legacy of Mainland Chinese students and scholars who have come to the United States to study and their achievements upon returning to China. Mrs. Ruth Graham, the wife of Rev. Billy Graham, has agreed to be the Honorary Conference Chairperson. The conference will challenge both non-Christian and Christian scholars and students to consider evidences for God and Christianity, Christian beliefs, Christian growth, China and Christianity. Also included is a track covering issues such as Biblical issues for family life and dealing with suffering and oppression. ISI and others are in the process of raising sponsorships to help defray the cost for the PRC students to attend this conference. The week long event will couple the experience of staying in American Christian homes and an opportunity to visit Sea World and other Southern California attractions. Our last communication said that we would be visiting Disneyland. However, after some helpful correspondence from Brigada readers, we have decided to participate in the boycott that is being held by the Southern Baptists, Assemblies of God and other Christian organizations because of Disney’s stand on a number of moral issues. ISI has also adjusted the price for students to $195 for the week. This is inclusive of airfare, lodging, meals, and all of the conference costs. We originally thought we could do the conference for $125. However, after some consultation with some Chinese student groups and workers, as well as some unanticipated expected, we are charging $195 for those who register before the January 15, 1997 early registration date. Those students who register after January 15, 1997 will pay $215. Again, ISI would love to invite any Brigada readers who are involved with PRC students to and either bring or send the students to the event. ISI is currently working on a price structure and program for those ISM workers who would like to accompany their students to the conference. Recruitment of students will be done on a low key basis for security reasons, through ISI staff and other ISM workers who have relationships with students. While we are trusting the Lord for 400 Mainland Chinese students and scholars, we do have room for more should the Lord provide. For info, see Bob Norsworthy, Vice President of Ministries of ISI at BobNorsataoldotcom. ISI is also putting together an advisory group of Mainland Chinese workers across the country to help give consultation into the event itself and the content. If you would like to be a part of this group, please let us know of your interest in this respect also. If you have key contacts in PRC ministry that ISI can contact, please pass those on by way of email, as we are seeking to broaden our contacts to make this event a success, both for the students and for the Kingdom.
