SPECIAL “ADVANCE” ISSUE
In August, 1995, Brigada Today began a special relationship with Mark Kelly’s Advance, a monthly publication similar in vision to the Brigada family of conferences. And so began what has turned out to be a long-standing partnership of two sister journals – proving that there is “no competition among lighthouses!”

Today we dedicate the January 4th issue to Advance by including the entire New Year’s issue – The January Advance – “lock, stock and barrel” – in this edition of Brigada Today. If you haven’t downloaded a copy for awhile, I think you’ll see why we made it a regular feature in the first place! Like all Brigada Todays, Advance is archived on the file server. To receive past copies, just send a message to hubatxcdotorg with the content of the email message looking something like this (if, for example, you wanted the Nov., ’96, issue of Advance):
get brigada advance.9611

And now . . . let’s see what Mark has to say about January!!!

THE WORD

“As the Father sent me, so I am sending you.”
John 20.21

THE GOSPEL FOR EVERY PEOPLE
The number of church members in Hong Kong grew from 83,000 in 1980 to 381,000 in 1994, while the number of churches jumped from 634 to 1,056. Evangelist Luis Palau will hold a crusade April 10-13, less than three months before the city returns to People’s Republic sovereignty July 1. Ask God to give Hong Kong believers courage and boldness as they turn their crisis into opportunity for the gospel.

Believers in China’s Shanxi province shared the gospel in 60 villages and at least 500 people made decisions for Christ. China’s DAWN movement is working to start 1 million house churches by 2000. Ask God to multiply the gospel across China.

The gospel is advancing among Vietnam’s peoples. About half the Raday people are now church members. Christian workers among the Bru people have seen 14 house churches begun, with 1,600 believers. The number of Christians has multiplied in the past three years among the Bahnar, Jarai, Koho, Mnong Bunong and Stieng peoples. Beseech God for new believers in each of these people groups. Ask the Lord to raise up strong Christian leaders for each one.

China arrested 57,000 Uighurs and executed 1,700 of them in a crackdown on Muslim separatists in Xinjiang province, according to a Uighur nationalist group. Pray for a breakthrough of the gospel among the 500,000 Uighurs in Central Asia.

Clan warfare in Mogadishu, Somalia, intensified in December to the worst levels in months. More than 80 people were killed and dozens wounded in attacks Dec. 15. Militants claim to have killed all the Christians in Mogadishu. Lift the suffering Somali people to the throne of mercy. Pray that the light of the gospel would penetrate Somalia’s darkness.

Trans World Radio and Far East Broadcasting Co. provide 295 hours of gospel radio programming in 35 languages each week for audiences in India. Broadcasts reach more than 20,000 towns and villages in northern India, where less than 1% of the population is Christian. One program received 2,154 letters from new listeners in two months. Ask God to bless the witness of these ministries and draw many hearts to Christ.

THE PERSECUTED CHURCH
A Turkish court sentenced Syrian Orthodox believer Soner Onder to 16 years and 8 months in prison for a 1991 firebombing attack conducted by Kurdish separatists, despite police admissions there is no evidence he was involved. Onder was attending a Christmas service at his church when the attack occurred but signed a confession after police tortured him. Ask God to strengthen and encourage this young believer. Pray that justice would be done on his behalf.

A Catholic priest in Zaire, Jean-Claude Buhendwa, was murdered by Tutsi rebels after he protested the slaughter of about 500 Rwandan and Zairean refugees in a camp south of Bukavu, Zaire. Thank God for his courageous witness. Pray that his death will bear fruit for the Kingdom.

Five hooded men murdered Jorge Luis Gonzalez in his home the day after he and another ex-prisoner testified to their faith in Christ in a small church in Valencia, Colombia, the week before Easter. Gonzalez’ father and aunt have accepted Christ since his death. Pray that many would come to Christ because of his faithful witness.

Ask God to strengthen a house-church evangelist arrested at the end of December in a central province of China. A large amount of his ministry money was confiscated by officials and co-workers fear for his safety. Pray for this brother’s quick release.

An estimated 150 people armed with rocks, machetes and firearms attacked 22 evangelical families building homes on property given to them by the government in Mexico’s Chiapas state. Police stood by during the attack. Ask God to comfort and strengthen these families. Pray that their suffering will turn hearts to Christ.

Police in Vietnam’s Lam Dong province used metal pipes to beat 41-year-old pastor Ha Sieng for holding theological training in his home. When they could not revive him, he was rushed to a hospital, where he is recovering slowly. Lift up Vietnam’s suffering believers. Ask God to multiply the harvest in Vietnam.

SPIRITUAL FORCES OF DARKNESS
Job and education quotas for lower-caste Hindus in India have sparked a backlash from upper-caste Indians fearful of losing their land and powers. In one instance, 20 women and children and one man were hacked, shot and burned to death in broad daylight by upper-caste men from a neighboring village. None of the attackers was brought to justice, though their identities were known. Ask God to bind the dark powers that inspire such hatred.

Stand in prayer against the demonic powers behind ethnic slaughter in Rwanda, Burundi and Zaire. About 300 Burundian Hutu refugees were massacred in a church compound by Tutsi soldiers. Rwandan Hutu militants killed four Spanish missionaries working with refugees in eastern Zaire. Thousands of displaced people are at the mercy of soldiers, rebels and armed militants. Pray that God would use this oppression to turn hearts to himself.

As Western cultures turn from materialism to spirituality, many people are giving themselves to false religions. An estimated 60,000 people turned out for a New Age festival in Sydney, Australia. Many celebrities are proclaiming the benefits of Buddhism. Pray that believers will advance boldly into the West’s spiritual void. Ask God to burden his people for their neighbors’ spiritual yearnings.

A militant Hindu organization, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, has trained 116 “missionaries” to stop the spread of Christianity in India’s Guajarat province. The Hindu workers reportedly confront and threaten Christian workers regularly. Ask God to bind the dark forces that hold Hindus in fearful captivity. Pray that Hindu eyes will be opened to the truth of the gospel.

The suicide rate after an abortion is three times the general suicide rate and six times that associated with childbirth. Ask God to wrap his loving arms around women who have had abortions and protect them from dark powers of depression. Pray that God’s people would take the good news of forgiveness to women in despair.

REJOICE!
Reports from southeast Asia indicate a great harvest is taking place among the Hmong people. Most Hmong believers fled the region at the end of the Vietnam war, and the few remaining have been the target of great persecution. Yet Hmong believers reportedly now number at least 300,000 in Vietnam and 20,000 in Laos and whole villages reportedly are turning to Christ. Thank God for the power of the gospel among the Hmong. Pray that the good news of his love would sweep hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese and Laotian souls into the Kingdom.

A Hmong witch doctor in Laos contacted Far East Broadcasting Co. to ask how he can be free of the evil spirits that control his life. Some people in the hill tribes of Southeast Asia reportedly are selling farm animals to purchase radios so they can listen to a daily hour of FEBC gospel programming. Praise God for the movement of his spirit among the Hmong. Ask him to multiply the harvest.

As many as 350 believers in Kuwait took public stands for Christ after a Muslim court stripped Robert Hussein of his wealth and family and pronounced him an apostate deserving death. Glorify God for giving his children the courage of conviction. Ask him to make their witness bold and effective.

The world’s largest Muslim organization held a meeting in Surabaya, Indonesia, where six months earlier Muslim fanatics burned 10 churches. The Muslim group assigned guards to protect churches during the meeting so opponents would not embarrass them with more attacks. Praise God for the men of goodwill who lead this organization. Pray that bridges of understanding will be built between Muslims and Christians in Indonesia.

Egyptian student Michael Dura was released Dec. 10 after two months in prison on charges of promoting ideas that disturb the security of Egyptian society. Since his conversion five years ago, Dura had been arrested two other times and had been the target of a sensationalized newspaper article. Praise God for his release. Ask God to protect and strengthen him and to use his persecution to draw many others to Christ.

Praise God that India’s state-run Doordarshan television network has decided to broadcast a 100-part series on the life of Jesus Christ in 1997. Pray that these programs will turn many hearts to Christ.

God prompted a prayer warrior to visit a family in China’s southern Henan province, where a man had died of an incurable disease. After more than an hour’s prayer, the dead man coughed. Soon he was walking about the house and eating food brought for the funeral meal. Magnify the Lord for this powerful sign. Pray that many hearts will be turned to Christ as a result.

IT’S TRUE!
Tin Lanh (“Good News”) church workers in Vietnam started 112 house churches with 42,000 members in 1995.

QUOTED
“If our world mission means anything, it means the powerful proclamation that no other name, philosophy, religion, scientific world view, or whatever, is ever going to bring anyone to salvation. Never. To say that a sincere Protestant, Catholic, Jew, Orthodox, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Taoist, or animist is going to gain salvation apart from confessing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is an unspeakable affront to his blood.”

FRONT LINES
Passing the torch

Jesus had completed his mission for the Father. He had found the comrades God had set apart for him. He had taught them about the Kingdom.

His work was done. He had endured the agony of the cross. He had suffered for the sins of mankind. He had laid down his life so others could make peace with God.

After God raised him from the dead, Jesus appeared to his disciples. He gave them proof of his physical resurrection. He taught them about God’s Kingdom.

Jesus also told his disciples that they must complete the mission he had begun. He said: “As the Father sent me, so I am sending you.” His mission became theirs. Through Jesus, God had been reconciling the world to himself. Now, through the disciples, that work would continue.

Jesus had given his life to spreading the good news about God’s love and forgiveness. Now his disciples would devote their lives to the same work. It was their turn to extend the Kingdom, their turn to demonstrate God’s revolutionary power in human lives.

The disciples were given Jesus’ mission. They also were told how to accomplish it. Jesus called his disciples from among the people he had contact with every day. He told them, in turn, to make disciples of those they met along the way. God would give them disciples, just as he had given them to Jesus. They would teach their disciples, just as Jesus had taught them.

Their lives would be focused on building the Kingdom. Along the paths of daily life, they had contact with people: Family. Friends. Neighbors. Business contacts. Casual acquaintances. Among them would be people enslaved by the Enemy. People living in rebellion against God. People needing to find peace with God.

They would build relationships with these people. They would come to understand their struggles and sorrows. In the name of Christ, they would meet their needs. They would share how the power of God had freed them from sin and given them new meaning and purpose in life. They would teach them about Jesus and help them make peace with God. Then they would help the new disciples begin the process all over again with their families, friends, and neighbors.

God would give them the power and wisdom to do this, just as he had given Jesus power and wisdom. The work that had consumed Jesus would consume them as well. Jesus said they would do what he had been doing.

Jesus expected no less of his disciples than he expected of himself. In fact, he promised them they would do even greater things than he had done. Because he was going to the Father, his spirit could be multiplied through all of them. Because of their numbers, because of the years that lay ahead, they could carry the good news to all the peoples throughout the whole earth. They could complete the work that God had begun in Jesus: defeating the Evil One, freeing the captives, and bringing the world back into harmony with God.

URBANA GIVES UPDATE ON WORLD
Wish you all could have attended the press conference yesterday here at Urbana 96. Director Dan Harrison told how that someone has figured out that there are approximately 332,000 missionaries at work in the world today . . . and only 4000 of those are working among unreached peoples. “Assembly halls the size of this one [19,500 capacity] could be filled over and over again without ever finding a single person who knows Jesus,” Dan testified. “We can’t afford another generation like this one.” Later, shooting straight with 20,000 students jammed into a packed-out arena, he paused and stated, “I think your generation can make a difference.” For the sake of the unreached, I surely hope so!

George Verwer followed suit with “7 words” — A Faithful Witness is

1. a Jesus-focused person,
2. a grace-awakened person,
3. a “Rag-a-muffin person”
(According to George, “Rag-a-muffin” describes, in England, a child that’s not dressed quite right, not all that clean, and kind of a misfit. God uses rag-a-muffin Christians!),
4. a Visionary person,
5. a Spirit-filled person,
6. a Proactive person, and
7. a Crucified person.

(These last two items are a real “scoop”! He didn’t get to them in his message . . . so 20,000 students are wondering around the Univ. of IL wishing they knew the last 2 of Verwer’s “7 words!” [We got them in an exclusive Brigada interview with George after the main session! :-) ]

But to me, Verwer’s clearest comments came in his reference to the people God can use. “I don’t believe we’re always successful at following His plan ‘A’. In fact, I don’t even know if He has a plan ‘A’. Sometimes I feel like I’m having to fall back on Plan ‘C’ . . . or . . . Plan ‘H’!!! But do you know what I say??? I praise God for a big alphabet!!!!” Verwer’s conclusion: God can use you, just the way you are! He specializes in using ordinary people to do extraordinary things!

BRIGADA-TRAVEL-BIDS QUIETLY SAVING YOU HUNDREDS
A reader wrote this past week to thank the Lord for Brigada-Travel-Bids. That’s the conference made up primarily of travel agents from all over the world. They watch for your messages, then pounce on them, bidding for a chance to beat all the other agents in the group. They send the quotes directly back to you so that you don’t even have to subscribe to the conference to use it! (It’s configured in a special way to let you mail messages to it even though you’re a non-member.) To utilize the services of the agents in that group, just send your rough itinerary to brigada-travel-bidsatxcdotorg and sit back and wait for the response! Well anyway, this reader wrote, “…As it worked out, my wife “just happened” to check email (I was in Indiana) and it was two hours before the deadline for the tickets my daughter needed. To make a long story short, an agent got the message in CO Springs, made arrangements and in the end, saved us $450 on the best that two travel agents tried to do for us here. Praise God!” Try it! You might like it! :-)

PRAY FOR LATINAMERICA 2000
Would you take a moment and pray right now for Latinamerica 2000, a conference taking place this weekend in Panama (27-29 december). With more than 3,000 delegates from all the Americas countries (including more than 120 Denominational Leaders from the USA), the focus of this conference is the development of AD2000 National Initiatives and Joshua Project 2000. Their goal is promote the adoption (for prayer and church planting) of each of the 1,739 peoples in the JP2000 list in partnership with churches and mission agencies working in Latin America. I tell you – you’ll be hearing more about this one!

WE GET MAIL
One reader wrote this past week with this encouraging story about the recently published Gateway People Cluster list, “Let me reiterate with an illustration from my own life that Brigada IS working! While I have served as a cross-cultural missionary for nearly 6 years, I am primarily involved in training and mobilizing the existing church (currently in Brazil). This is where I’m gifted and called. But this has not diminished my desire to be used to reach unreached peoples in a significant way. I’ve been praying for several years as to where the Lord would have me invest some of my energies, ie. which unreached people I could serve as an advocate. Less than two weeks ago I felt that the Lord had finally pinpointed a people, the Tharu in south Asia. … Yet I was still largely unaware of the status of the Tharu as an unreached people. So imagine my surprise when I read the 13 Dec Brigada Today and discovered that the Tharu were an as yet unrepresented gateway people! Perhaps God has prepared me for “such a time as this.” Or more accurately, such a group as this! I might never have known except for Brigada Today! Please be assured that God is using the Brigada network! Yours for the Nations, Joao Mordomo, Crossover Communications International, Curitiba, Brazil.” For more information on serving as an advocate or a contact for a gateway people group cluster, contact jhannaatxcdotorg.

DON’T FORGET TO GET
Don’t forget that you can “get” any previous edition of Brigada Today by either of two methods. If you have access to the worldwide web, our web specialist (Bob Mayhew, a computer services tech at a major university in California) archives every single copy at http://www.xc.org/brigada. But we live in a world where not every Internet-equipped individual has access to the web . . . so you can also “order up” any copy of Brigada Today using MAFxc’s automated email server. It’s like visiting Morrison’s Cafeteria on Sunday afternoon in Nashville, TN! Just retrieve a file list from the Brigada “archive” by sending the one word, “filelist brigada” to hubatxcdotorg (without quotes). Within minutes, you’ll receive in your email inbox a copy of the list of files stored in the archive. Pick out the one you want and send a message like this to hubatxcdotorg:
get brigada brigada-today.961228
Obviously, replace the 961228 with the year/mo./date of your choosing.

In addition, we occasionally place other files there for your pleasure! Like today, for example, here’s a file from a Brigada participant Russ_Cooperatsildotorg who serves with SIL in Papua New Guinea. He writes about:

1. A Response to the concept of Brigada Today
2. A Report on E-mail use for missionaries in places like Papua New Guinea
3. Experimenting with E-mail “in the bush” via Packet Radio
4. 100th(!) NT in PNG in relation to the volcano eruption on Manam Island.
5. The magnitude of the task remaining in a land of 850 languages.

To get Russ’ great little update for Brigada readers, send this line in the text of an email note to hubatxcdotorg

LATEST “VIRUS ATTACK” ALSO A FARCE
Heard about “PENPAL GREETINGS”? It’s the same genre as Deeyenda, Irina, and Good Times – all hoaxes. To date, there is no known “email virus”. (Pete Holzmann said we should send readers to http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/bulletins/h-05.shtml for documentation on this.) Granted – you should always check executables (any *.exe) before hitting the enter key, but no one has documented a case of virus attack via pure electronic mail. (Exception: Watch for WinWord and Excel “attached files” or make sure your copy of WinWord/Excel watches for “macro viruses”. For more information, get to Jonathan’s virus info page at http://www.xc.org/jonathan.

BAR NONE – THE BEST EMAILED WORLD NEWS SOURCE
Without a doubt, I think we’ve discovered the very best emailed world news source. Subscribe at http://www.merc.com/. You can get as much . . . or as little as you want, targeted by topic, region, and size! :-) I love it! And . . . best of all, it’s free! If you don’t have access to the web, someone else can sign up for you. But remember – don’t sign anyone else up without first getting his/her permission! :-)

PACIFIC CHRISTIAN COLLEGE UPGRADES ON-LINE MBA IN NON-PROFIT MGT.
Thanks to Nick Sherwin who has notified Brigada of PCC’s upgrades to his seminary’s on-line MBA. Among other changes, PCC has dropped the requirement for attending the “kick-off” workshop and they’ve now made the MBA available to students to begin the program at any time during the year providing they begin as a new class launches (generally, new classes begin at eight week intervals). Interested students can e-mail Nick at nsherwinatxcdotorg or visit PCC’s web site at: http://www.pacificcc.edu.

FROM URBANA DAY ONE – “ONE DELEGATE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE…”
My buddy, Eric Derry, will wrap up the day with an essay each evening. Here’s his recollection of last night: “By plane, train, bus, van & car they swarmed in from the four corners of the earth, littering the airports, bus stations, and highways, all teeming with anticipation. Some 20,000 eager friends of the Carpenter from Galilee converged today on the University of Illinois for InterVarsity’s 18th student mission convention, known simply as … Urbana ®.

So what happened ?

Imagine sitting on the floor of an 18,500 seat arena jam packed with a tremendous assortment of skin color, praising God with all your breath in another language, visually surrounded by superior quality video technology, and being challenged by down to earth radical men and women transformed by God’s grace, living on the edge by the power of the Almighty. Intersperse that with spontaneous praise, laughter, and expressions of excitement. Hear the thunderous yet harmonious praise chorus, “The Cry Of My Heart Is To Follow You”. Feel the continual refreshment “In Every Generation” as his faithfulness splashes on you like waves at the sea shore.

A thought. In the innermost parts. Wherever it is that my spirit and His have fireside chats. A sense of awe. Take mental pictures. This is important. More than an event. More than a gathering. More than singing. More than preaching. More than George Verwer “rocking the house.” We celebrated a remarkable missions history. We applauded the faithful truth-bearers. We surrendered some dirty broken vessels that needed cleaned up or repaired. We dedicated our next steps to the Master Designer. We pondered the plight of the millions to whom Jesus is a stranger. Their staggering number pierced our complacency as 1739 students waved a placard for each of the “least reached people groups” who eke out an existence without hope, without peace, without knowing “Abba Father”. George Verwer quoted Dwight L. Moody, “World evangelism can be done, must be done, will be done, and I say, ‘Why not this generation?!'”

And so it was, Generation “X” in the “Arena” of decision.

Then it hit me like a baseball bat in the face. My attention was drawn to the one delegate who made a difference. I saw him first on the highway in a van full of students. Then I saw him again in the registration line when I was waiting on “Solutions” to resolve some unforeseen problems. As my mind raced back through the events of the day (setting up the Adoption Center, unloading the placards, numerous conversations with a host of kingdom builders, press conferences, dinner with Betty Sue Brewster, the main event at Assembly Hall, then capping off the evening numerically sorting the placards with some precious InterVarsity staff-volunteers) I noticed the same delegate at every turn.

He made a difference just by showing up… just like He did 2000 years ago in a stable.

Eric Derry
[Thanks for the essay, Eric! We look forward to tomorrow!]

1. THE BEST INTERNATIONAL NEWS . . . FOR FREE!!! — We continue to be very impressed by INFOBEAT (formerly San Jose Mercury News) and its free feed to email inboxes! For more information, visit . The summaries can be selected by region… so you get only the focus you want, and each little “Brigada-like” summary paragraph has a URL to click on to get the entire new story. All for free! Incredible bargain. If you’re taking cable just to watch CNN, I bet you’ll unsubscribe after you start reading =this=! And now, they even ship out a special version suitable for “Outlook Express” and other MIME/HTML-compatible email clients. Terrific-looking stuff!
2. GET CONNECTED TO KEY SOURCES FOR PEOPLE GROUP INFO. — Been looking for great input on your people group of choice??? Maybe there’s a Brigada-Connections conference for the group for which you’re praying! To find out, just send a message to <hubatxcdotorg> with this simple text on the first line (not the subject): conferences brigada

With any luck, you’ll receive an auto-mailed message in your inbox in a jiffy! It’ll list the entire family of Brigada conferences. Once you find one you want to join, just send a message back to <hubatxcdotorg> that reads, “subscribe brigada-peoples-sasak” (replace sasak with the people group of your choice — but make sure there’s a conference by that name before trying!). Or, if there’s a brigada-connections conference, just email your questions to brigada-connections-acehnese (replace Acehnese with the people group you’re researching, but make sure there’s a “brigada-connections” conference for that group first!). One of the real live humans monitoring the connections conference will try to answer your query.

And guess what — it’s all free!!!! :-)
3. THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD IS NOT SO FAR AWAY AS IT ONCE WAS — … at least now you can pray informedly!!! The 1998 “Intercessors for China” Prayer Calendar is being made available to Brigada readers at a special reduced rate. This full-color calendar was developed by Silk Road Ministry Staff. It is designed to help you focus on the people in 40 Gateway Cities in north China. This calendar is intended to help Christians outside China pray strategically, comprehensively and specifically for the people and country of China. The price is $4 per individual calendar or $10 per bundle of 5! To order, Call Integrated Resources at 1-800-729-4351 and ask for item 7707e.
4. CATCH ADDITIONAL PERSPECTIVES! — In last week’s item, “6) PERSPECTIVES LOUISVILLE STYLE,” we announced a January 20th date when, we’re told, it should have been January 22nd. Either way, if you’re interested in Perspectives in the Louisville area, contact <75451dot1611atcompuservedotcom> for more information. ‘Course, if you’re from N. Indiana, in the city of Chesterton, you’ll start Monday, January 12th. For audit or credit, (college or graduate), contact <gregcatlbchurchdotorg>. And… if you’re in Eugene, OR, and Indy or Louisville is too far to commute, your sessions run on Sundays, 5-8pm, Jan 11-Apr 26, for credit or enrichment. Contact Tim Watson <102124dot1064atcompuservedotcom> or (541-345-0341) or .
5. WHEN DOES MIME GIVE YOU THE SILENT TREATMENT??? — When your email reader can only handle ASCII text, that’s when. In those cases, you’ll see dreaded “equals3D” characters when MIME email clients have sent you special characters. As a result, Jonathan Marsden (our “tech-on-call”) wrote this past week to recommend that we use *asterisks* for emphasis instead of =equal= signs. Unfortunately, I’ve been building the habit of =equal= signs for nearly 3 years!!! So… I’d like to ask you for =patience* while I learn! :-) Jonathan also suggested a) not using MIME at all on mailings like _Brigada Today_ since there are many ASCII only clients still in use, and b) avoiding non-ASCII characters (such as special foreign language symbols not included in the standard ASCII set — “inyeah,” tildes, and the like). We’ll try to comply.
6. A DEGREE OF DIFFERENCE… IN ARABIC — needs someone with a degree in Standard (classical) Arabic to proof-read some Arabic books she’s written. Got any friends who read from right to left? If so, give SisterMarieatjunodotcom a jingle if you can help.
7. LEADERSHIP MAKES THE DIFFERENCE — As this issue of _Brigada Today_ hits the wires, our mission organization has just sponsored a training weekend in Miami for our team leaders from throughout the globe. Projects in some 30 cities or people groups in 22 countries were represented. We document the basic outline here in the hopes that it will spawn creative thinking in your head for the mission or church within which you work. Maybe you could pull your leadership together and improve on the model below. Either way, throughout the weekend there was a particular kind of magic that permeated the event.

M – “meetings.” Our team leaders were able to meet their peers from throughout the globe, as well as new mission leadership and board members. The camaraderie that developed was perhaps the most important outcome of the meeting. One team leader reported, “It’s been great to meet others with more experience so I can try to learn from their example.” In fact, a buddy added up the years of on-field experience and the cumulative total summed up to 188 years!

A – “art of leadership.” All day long on Friday, the emphasis was on creating all the more effective leadership at the team level.

G – “gaining resources and skills” and the particular skill we featured on Saturday was conflict management. Throughout the day, the sessions focused on how to help team members resolve the sticky issues they face on mission teams.

I – “integrity.” The emphasis on day 3 was proper relationships with family, friends, team-mates, and singles. In each relationship, delegates learned how to communicate and empathize with integrity as Jesus would.

C – “checkpoint” — thus the “c.” For our teams, our mission as a whole, and for ourselves in particular, the weekend gave us a chance to step back and look at our world through new eyes.

Without exception, delegates asked for similar gatherings in the future. So we’re already at work planning the next team leaders’ summit sometime in mid-1999. At the next meeting we hope to include spouses as well.

Without a doubt, it was a landmark event. As we head into 1998, we’re hoping each and every team will experience the difference of all the more effective leadership no matter where they serve with Team Expansion.

So how ’bout you and your agency/church? Could you benefit from a bit of “magic?”
8. NOW MAY THE LORD BLESS YOUR CHRISTMAS! — As you celebrate the birth of the Savior, wherever you are on the globe this week, we wish you the very best Christmas ever. And we dream of the day that His promise can be fulfilled, that truly representatives of all peoples everywhere will stand before Him at Christmastime and praise Him for the light that enlivens the world! AD2000 CITIES DATABASE LIVE AND ONLINE
6500 CITIES AWAIT! — Have you ever wanted to know about a city in Chad? or find out if there are Christians in Perm, a former penal city of the USSR? 5 years ago, no one even had a list accessible to the missions community. But now you can, thanks to the hard work of a dedicated group of volunteers in the Brigada family! About a year ago, they were kind enough to bring me into their development group so I could “copy the mail.” What I’ve noticed over these past months is tons of dedication and passion for bringing to the missions community the very best information possible on urban centers — so that God could be glorified and cities reached for him. So now, after “copying the mail” for months, I can tell you they’re finally ready to “go public!”

Simply go to http://www.xc.org/brigada/adcities and follow the instructions. You’ll find some simple statistics on the current status of the church in that community, if it is known. And you’ll also be shown great pointers for additional information. I’m currently helping a local church plan a pre-search trip into a Muslim nation – we leave on Jan. 4, as a matter of fact – so I just started clicking and, before you know it, I was sending very helpful URLs to the trip participants, thanks to the hard work these guys have done connecting all this together.

The next step for the team is to enable people to attach additional URLs right there on the web site – automatically. That’ll be great, because then the resources will grow exponentially as we all pitch in. Also, they’re very eager to know which people groups live in what cities. If you’re interested in helping them take the adcities engine to the next level, discussions on the ongoing development will be linked through the brigada-cities conference. To join, just send a note to hubatxcdotorg with the following line in the message text:
subscribe brigada-cities

There are also opportunities to volunteer to become part of the ongoing development team or to do the basic database entry. The team desperately needs two people who are database literate, can master ACCESS and give some hours each week to entry of data. Also needed are “friendly face” folks who are reasonably technically gifted but just good “people persons.”

To volunteer, join the brigada-cities conference above and throw your name into the hat by sending your message to brigada-citiesatxcdotorg. Among those monitoring are Viv Grigg, Co-chairman, AD2000 Cities Network.

Now let’s back away and look at this from a big higher altitude. What this project proves is that motivated, highly passionate men and women can seize the day and utilize technology to make practical, useful information available to us all. We give praise to the Lord for their hours and hours of time invested to make this dream a reality. Thanks to Viv, Jonathan, John, Leland, Matthew, Aubrey, and others! (And thanks for letting me read your mail through the months! :-) ) We urge you to stop by their habitat and set the web wheels in motion! You’ll be glad you did! Once again, to see their site, set your browser to: http://www.xc.org/brigada/adcities

LEARNING TO PRAY WITH POWER FOR EXTRAORDINARY EXPLOITS!
Organizers of the highly successful “Praying Through the Window” thrusts in 1993 and 1995 are now calling for prayer leaders everywhere to come together in Colorado Springs for a special conference entitled, “Praying With Power: Empowering Ordinary People for Extraordinary Exploits,” February 12 – 15, 1997. Beverly Pegues, Coordinator of the Christian Information Network, recently wrote, “This practical training conference is designed to equip believers to pray effectively and to empower teams to pray on the field.” Convened by C. Peter Wagner of the A.D. 2000 United Prayer Track, nearly 40 prayer specialists from around the world will speak, among them Raju Abraham (India), Dora Akuetteh (Ghana), Asuncion Arimany (Guatemala), and many, many more. Other presenters include Luis Bush, Ted Haggard, Cindy Jacobs, Jim Montgomery, John Robb and still others. In addition, Fred Markert of YWAM is coordinating the training session for prayer journeyers and team leaders. Ten other sessions feature such topics as “The Move of the Holy Spirit in the 10/40 Window,” “Church Planting Strategies,” “Focus on Prayer: Unreached Peoples in the 10/40 Window,” “Home-Based Intercessory Prayer Modeled,” “How to Get Your Church Involved,” and “Strategic-Level Warfare Prayer.” Audio and video tapes of each session will be available after the conference. Registration for “Praying With Power” is $75. For a brochure or more information or to register, contact the Christian Information Network, To register, call (719) 522-1040, fax (719) 548-9000, or E-mail 73422dot3471atcompuservedotcom. DEVELOPING THE CHURCH AS A MISSIONS TRAINING LAB
I know that within our PACE Projects (in conjunction with Envision ’96), we’re trying to empower the church as a contributor in the training of missionaries. Well now Bill Taylor, who heads up the World Evangelical Fellowship Missions Commission, has volunteered to pull together a listing and analysis of tools and resources to help local churches pull it off. If you are a local church doing missionary training – or if you know one who is – please contact Bill at 74742dot133atCompuservedotcom or better yet, send him a set of any ‘working models’ or training materials at 4807 Palisade Drive Austin, TX 78731
Bill, can we count on a summary here for Brigada??? Thanks! This is a very critical area. For each of our new PACE Projects, we’re suggesting that the missionaries from the on-site team invest training time in the “local church lab,” the primary or lead “advocate church.” So your question is top strategic from our vantage point!

GERMAN REACH OUT MISSION CONFERENCE ‘COLORFUL, DIVERSE, EFFECTIVE’
Word on the autobahn is that the Reach Out ’96 Mission Conference in Fürth (Oct 2 – 5, 1996) was a big success. It featured George Otis, Douglas Layton, John MacFarlane and Hartwig Henkel and was, according to German sources, “Colorful, diverse and effective.” Chris van den Assem wrote to Brigada, “This conference was a real break-through! Our thanks first of all goes to the Lord of the Harvest Himself who was present in power, to the speakers and the worship team who poured themselves out AND to the many who greatly sacrificed behind the scenes to make it all possible. It was well worth the effort.” This event sets the stage for “Reach Out `97 Missions Festival,” May 16 – 19, 1997 in Wackersdorf, Bayern. The focus there will be “Reaching the Unreached Target Group: The New Generation!” Among others, the speakers will be Luis Bush of the AD 2000 Missions Movement and John MacFarlane of Nehemiah, Nürnberg, Germany. For more information, write Chris van den Assem, Arise and Build Ministries, at abmdotvfaatt-onlinedotde.

ADOPT-A-PEOPLE CONFERENCE HEADS TOWARD GATEWAY PEOPLES CONSULTATION
Don’t forget that we’re “on the hunt” for contact people for the gateway people cluster groups. This call for information givers stems from a meeting held on October 24th, 1996, when representatives of sending agencies, service agencies, and adopting churches, all involved in the Adopt-A-People movement, met together in Colorado Springs for the purpose of reconciliation, assessment of progress, and strategic planning for revitalizing the Adopt-A-People mobilization effort.

Meeting in an atmosphere full of awe at God’s power to accomplish beyond human comprehension, the delegates shared both exciting and sobering perspectives on the status and progress of the Adopt-A-People movement over the past seven years, recognizing that in their small gathering only a small portion of the agency community, and an even tinier fraction of Christ’s church, was represented. Interspersed with times of prayer and repentance, the delegates heard and responded to reports on progress of the Adopt-A-People Movement from denominational church leaders, independent church leaders, mission agencies, and others.

In response to what was shared, several key decisions and forward-looking commitments were made:

It was recognized that the purpose of the Adopt-A-People Movement is to:

* motivate Christians’ hearts, minds and actions toward the least reached,
* find those who want to be involved,
* link those with a common love for a particular least reached people group,
* serve those who become involved, as they pursue caring and adventurous relationships for the glory and adoration of Jesus Christ.

They also agreed to form four initial task forces to continue their dialog and accomplish their goals:

* Roles and Functions task force, completing an initial assessment by November 30, 1996;
* Adoption Guidance Program Editing task force, with editing complete by November 30, 1996;
* Gateway/Cluster Advocates Consultation Planning task force, for consultation to be held before April 17, 1997;
* Information Sources & Sharing task force, with initial recommendations and results by November 30, 1996.

Finally, they agreed to meet again in February 1997, to evaluate the work of these task forces and their overall progress toward effective cooperation.

If you’d like to suggest someone as a contact person for a particular gateway people, send your ideas to jhannaatcprojectdotcom. Here are a list of people groups still needing representatives at the consultation:

GLOBAL GLIMPSE GIVING GLOBAL HOPE
About 30 people made commitments to Christ when a missions team visited an Akha village in Myanmar. The village head man, however, threatened to kill team members if they ever returned. The group prayed for him and returned a few days later to find that the head man’s own wife had become a believer. Now more than 100 people worship the One True God in that village. There are 365,000 Akha spread across southern China, Burma and Laos.

UPDATE ON MRS. RALPH WINTER
Rick Wood writes that Mrs. Winter continued to face additional challenges with “a fungal infection which they have treated. Recently she developed pneumonia, but was strong enough to be released from the convalescent center and has returned home. She will continue to be treated for the pneumonia while at home.” Rick and Dr. Winter ask that we continue praying for her complete recovery.

WE GET MAIL
Thanks to one individual who wrote this past week to admit his initial suspicions of Brigada. “I have a pessimistic view of principally volunteer-type endeavors,” wrote the Brigada participant, “… but Brigada seems to be thriving.” On behalf of the 4000+ volunteers who are together making Brigada a success, we say a big ‘Thanks!’ There are several who help Brigada Today keep happening – and they include:

* Global Glimpses: John Hanna, Caleb Project, jhannaatcprojectdotcom
* ADVANCE: Mark A. Kelly, Kainos Press, 70420dot1057atcompuservedotcom
* Web Tech: Bob Mayhew, Brigada Volunteer, MayhewatXCdotOrg
* Web Art: Patti Mayhew, pmayhewatdiscoverdotnet
* Technical Development: Jonathan Marsden, MAFxc jonathanatxcdotorg
* Brigada Customer Service Manager: Revis Ann Massey, RevisAnnMasseyatxcdotorg
* … as well as many regional contributors, such as Kerstin Hack 100711dot2622atCompuServedotCOM in Germany.

Many of these have been doing their jobs behind the scenes now for months and in a couple of cases, we’re coming up on years! We don’t often blow their horns – because that’s not why they’re working… but we are all very thankful for the choice they’ve made to sacrifice time and energy for the Brigada dream. We are all direct recipients of their labor – and we hope and pray that unreached peoples everywhere will be indirect recipients as time goes on! God bless you all!

ONE-DAY MISSIONS SEMINAR IDEAS NEEDED
Richard Malm richardmalmatjunodotcom is trying to compile a resource list of all the one-day missions seminars in the world! :-) Like… “Harvest Connection” by AIMS and such. If you know of any, write Richard directly. Richard, can we count on a summary report in a couple of weeks?

————————————–

PRESENTERS NEEDED FOR SEMINAR IN CRIMEA, UKRAINE
The place is Crimea. The time is May 19-21, May 22-24, early October 1997. The person is you, . . . or so hopes Georges Carillet, missionary with Team Expansion and Kentucky Christian College in Simferopol Ukraine. Georges works with Crimean American College there and is seeking scholars and specialists who can present a Christian perspective (to non-Christian professors and students) in the following areas:

1. Medical issues (particularly ethical issues and the sanctity of life; genetic engineering; euthanasia continues to be a hot topic; alcohol and drug treatment are constant concerns),
2. virtue (its place and function in society, its necessity, its sources, etc),
3. ecology/environmental issues (this is an important issue in Crimea with strong philosophical underpinnings, either closely associated with a mechanistic worldview or strongly influenced by ‘new age’ ideas), and
4. science and faith (or some such combination for an “apologetics” section, though apologetics ought to be represented in some form in the other sections as well; there is keen interest in a paper on genetics and evolution).

If you can help, write Georges directly carilletatwildwinddotcom and he’ll fill you in on more details. Maybe you should be the next person in a summit in Yalta?

INSIDER AT COMPUSERVE OFFERS HELP TO BRIGADA USERS
Guess who’s reading Brigada these days??? Sharon is, that’s who! She’s a helpdesk & Systems Specialist at Compuserve (for the Christian Interactive Network) and has volunteered to help Brigada Today readers with questions related to Compuserve and its use with Brigada and all other issues. (She’s committed to us that if she doesn’t know the answer, she’ll find someone who does!) Thanks Sharon! Write her with your CServe questions at: SRH 71712dot3534atCompuServedotCOM.

————————————–

DESPERATELY SEEKING SAUDI
Here’s a guy who wants to open up marketing possibilities in Saudi (Arabia). He’d like to be able to visit and/or locate there in some tentmaking role, so he can show Christ’s love to the people He loves! Write David McDermott 75351dot247atCompuServedotCOM if you have options for buyers for stationery products, watches (he’s even got a series on the OT for kids! [serious!]), or other imports.

————————————–

COME ONE, COME ALL TO PRAY WITH BRAZIL!
Here’s a guy who’d like to know your prayer requests. Milton teureinoatnutecnetdotcomdotbr distributes (in Portuguese) edits a monthly prayer calendar newsletter and ships it to 4000 people in Brazil — for free! He’d like to know your prayer requests… but, . . . in Portuguese, if possible :-) We’ve already sent him info on how to join Brigada-prayer-requests, just send a message to hubatxcdotorg with only the following line in the text of the message:
subscribe Brigada-prayer-requests

But if you have specific requests you’d like to target directly at a Brazilian audience… or if you’d like to subscribe (and [very important] you read Portuguese! :-)), just write him Milton teureinoatnutecnetdotcomdotbr.

NEED INFO. ON GOV’T LEADERS FOR YOUR PRAYER TIME??
Bob Sutterfield, with MAF’s new electronic frontiers dept, suggests that we try http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/chiefs/chiefs-toc-view.html which says it was updated November 4, 1996. That should bring us all up to day as of Nov. 1! Thanks Bob!

AFRICAN PROVERBS, I PRESUME!
Global Mapping Int’l is releasing a multi-faceted electronic research tool called the African Proverbs CD which contains: 27,000+ proverbs in 25 languages, 23 complete books, 35 unpublished essays, 200 proverb key page collections, a bibliography of 800+ collections, 42 maps identifying 200 languages, a biographical directory of researchers, an ethnologue directory of 1500 African languages, a list of collections in print with publishers’ addresses and much more. (Whew! That’s a mouthful! :-))

According to Harold Britton, a VP at GMI, “Proverbs are the distilled genius of oral cultures (perhaps even an encapsulation of the whole culture). They identify and dignify a culture, bringing life into wisdom and wisdom into life. Relating scripture to proverbs is a powerful tool for preaching and teaching. This will be a very significant tool for churches, colleges and organizations worldwide.”

Harold has worked with the rest of the folks at GMI to develop a special deal for Brigada subscribers. We can order the African Proverbs CD at a special discount price of $99.95. For more info, email: haroldatgmidotorg. Thanks Harold!
