BEST DEAL IN THE GALAXY-COM!
OSo have you heard about Galcom’s new CD? Galcom International USA has developed a CD missions data base as an aid for informed prayer for the unreached peoples groups and as a reference tool for missions. The current demonstration issue contains the PIN peoples group data base of unreached peoples groups, 22,000 screens of text, 250 pictures, drawings and videos and 50 voice files. It profiles many missionaries and ministers working among unreached people groups. It also has a separate file of people groups designated as “least evangelized”, answers to questions on adopting a people group, current disease outbreak information, information on most known terrorist groups, and address of many world mission ministries. This CD will run on any IBM compatible 386 or higher and is an excellent reference aid and also a tool for churches and prayer groups who participate in “pray through the window”. To order send request to GalcomUSAataoldotcom – and [if they can manage to collect their mail on America Off-line :-) ] they’ll answer in no time at all [well, maybe in a few days when they can squeeze in :-) ]. Here’s the best news. The price. Not $299. Not even $79. This little baby is $15! At this price, I figure the people at Galaxy-Com must care more about unreached people than they do about making bucks! :-) Cool.

FOLLOW-UP TO “NOW YOU CAN SAVE BUCKS WHEN CALLING FROM OVERSEAS”
$ $ $ Those Cross-link people can be emailed at Crosslinkatearthlinkdotnet. They’re the ones providing the special prices on calling the USA from overseas. One reader [Paul] wrote, “Thanks for the CrossLink info in Brigada Today. I called them – it looks good. Talked to Sharon, very nice lady with a heart for missionaries. She had already received seven calls from folks who heard about their service via BRIGADA! (Mon.AM). Needless to say she is quite interested in knowing more about Brigada. … By the way, Sharon quoted me an example of a price/minute from India (my usual destination) of $.78. Just to call into a local email provider there – now no longer available at any price – was $.80/minute.” Thanks Paul! By the way, if you’re nervous about your organization getting a financial rebate from the group (if you are not-for-profit and don’t want to mix in profit kick-backs), just take the normal pricing. Even it is apparently a really good deal. Also, George Peavy says it’s tough to use these call backs for modems sometimes, especially in countries where you have to place the call through an operator. Finally, George also cautions that some countries might forbid use of call back services because they don’t want to lose the long distance revenue.

GOT A ONE-DAY MISSIONS SEMINARY COMING UP? POST IT ON THE NET!
That’s right! Here’s a spot keeping track of all the one-day missions emphasis days around the world. http://www.goshen.net/misslink/chapel/oneday.htm is the URL. Announcements or corrections may be e-mailed to xxchapelatlcfndotorg and must be received two weeks in advance of the event or the deadline for registration. Barbara Haas is the Webmaster there. Great idea.

THESE WORLD BOOK DUDES
This encyclopedia thing has been interesting to follow. (I’d like to be a “spider on the wall” in the World Book conference rooms. They spend big-time bucks on color ads, only to get a big response from something they’ve never even heard of. “Brigada what???” :-) ) One user wrote to say that when he first asked for the special offer ($79 pricing on the $299 product), they declined, saying it had “expired”. “But I persisted politely and prayerfully,” Dennis wrote, “and the Britannica folks finally asked me the source of the information that prompted the call. I opened up the file from you, read it aloud to them and they let me buy the set for $79!” [Wish I could have been there as a spider on the wall.] “Wait, that’s not all,” continues Dennis! “I explained I’d like to buy a second set for a friend. “What?” they replied in surprise. “We can’t do that!” But I said, “Well, you also said you couldn’t sell me the first at a reduced price, and then you did. I figured I might as well press my manners and ask for a second.”

Dennis wrote, “In disbelief, they let me buy a second set!”

He continued, “You guys are wonderful, especially when it comes to stretching a faith missionary’s resources.” [blush] And then there’s Andrea. Nice person. She wrote, “Just to say thanks. I ordered mine yesterday for 79 buckies, and I still can’t believe it! Thank you so so much. God bless you guys oodles.” [I hope He hears the “oodles” part.] Another reader who also talked them into honoring the deal told us that this CD does indeed contain the entire text that is featured in the most recent printed edition but only 3400 of the 24000 graphics/pictures in the print version. Once again, if you want to try to persuade Robert (or any of the other good World Book sales people) to honor this $79 price (such a deal), call World Book at 800-747-2194 or have a friend in the USA do it for you. And thanks to Greg Parsons at the US Center for inspiring this entire interesting chase scene! :-)

————————————–

WANT TO ATTEND A VERY MOVING SEMINAR?
Now you can. John Hanna alerted us to “The Moving Peoples Seminar,” a two-day introduction to nomadic peoples and Christian mission among them. Meet Christians from a number of missions with experience in different parts of the world and discuss nomads and various aspects of reaching them. Organized by the Nomadic Pastoralist Network & sponsored by missions in the Evangelical Missionary Alliance. When: July 15-16, 1997. Where: Bulstrode, Gerrards Cross, England (WEC-International headquarters) Cost: 25 pounds full board & room, or 10 pounds per day. [(Which is a fraction of what everyone else is charging for seminars these days!)] For further information, contact: David J. Phillips, Moving Peoples, WEC-International, Bulstrode, Gerrards Cross, Bucks SL9 8SZ ENGLAND.” Thanks John!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM THE JESUS FILM
The JESUS Film is on the move… even to radio! Work is underway on an International English version as the first of the “top 20” language translations. Also schools throughout Russia should soon receive 60,000 videocassettes, primarily in minority languages. Worldwide broadcasts of The JESUS Film are planned in partnership with the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), helping expose 3 billion people to the gospel by the year 2,000. Work continues to get film teams into areas of India, Nigeria, and Indonesia where there is no television coverage. Finally, new language translations are embarking this month, such as the Oromo language in Ethiopia, the Tigre language in Eritrea, and the Kissi and Kpelle languages in Guinea, West Africa.

Thanks to John Hanna of Caleb Project for compiling GLOBAL GLIMPSE each week.

MORE TRAVEL AGENTS NEEDED
Topping the list of all 71 Brigada conferences this past month was brigada-travel-bids, with 300 messages (most of which were requests for bids!). Imagine sitting at the desk of your travel agency and all of a sudden getting half a dozen extra calls per day for requests for quotes! And many of these are overseas journeys . . . some for groups! So please please don’t waste time. The current stack of two dozen Brigada-Travel travel agents are having a hard time keeping up! Please call up your favorite travel agent today and ask him/her to join the fray!!! This thing could turn into one of the most helpful features of the new Internet craze! So . . . tell them to send an email message today to hubatxcdotorg with only the line,
subscribe brigada-travel-bids

Remember that those requesting quotes don’t need to join. They just send their message to brigada-travel-bidsatxcdotorg with proposed itinerary enclosed. Travel agents then send back bids direct and personally. You sit back and pick the itinerary and price you want. Great deal. Free. Fast. Cool.

WANT NEWS FROM A JEWISH PERSPECTIVE?
For firsthand updates on the entire Mid-East, from a Jewish perspective, from YET non-Christian Jews, check out Friends of Jerusalem Insights. Reader Sandra J. Koster wrote, “I really like what they send out as well, and often the articles are similar [to the Mid-east digest]. If anyone is interested …, they can write Moshe Kempinski asking to be put on their mailing list. Just a regular letter is it, not command type responses are required. Mail your request to moshe01atnetmediadotnetdotil. Thanks Sandra!

“DID YOU KNOW?” – FROM OUR UKRAINIAN CORRESPONDENT
Yes folks, it’s time again – [drum roll] – Did you know that the term “the whole 9 yards” came from WWII fighter pilots in the South Pacific. When arming their airplanes on the ground, the .50 caliber machine gun ammo belts measured exactly 27 feet, before being loaded into the fuselage. If the pilots fired all their ammo at a target, it got “the whole 9 yards.”

DON’T FORGET TO PRAY ON FEB. 5, THE “NIGHT OF POWER”
Those interested in praying for Muslim friends on the “Night of Power” will want to download additional information on the event. Get it by sending email to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the message:

WEBWATCH – SEARCH FOR A CHURCH IN KERCH FOR MURCH
Got a friend named Murch who is looking for a church in Kerch? Now you can help him. Use http://www.churchlocator.com/ – a church-locator service! Don’t leave Murch in the lurch! :-)

While your web browser is fired up, check out 711.NET Christian Internet Assistance at http://www.711.net. It’s creators want it “to provide a “Central” location that users and visitors alike can quickly and dependably find comprehensive, properly organized and indexed sources of organizations, ministries, associations, products and services within the Christian community.”

————————————–

HOW DO YOU CATCH SHINGLES?
Here’s an inquiring mind who wants to know: “I have a friend who is going to Mexico very soon. He needs to know the “recipe” for making fiber concrete roofing. I have searched the internet to no avail. I am sure other missionaries have done this. Any suggestions? My email address is usjtmpatvusedotvanderbiltdotedu.” Write Laurie today – so she can catch the shingles! :-) Laurie, we’re counting on a full report once you figure this out, okay? :-) [Honest!]

————————————–

BRIGADA-PEOPLES ARCHIVING PEOPLE GROUP RESOURCES
Have you visited Brigada-Peoples lately? This might be the most successful Brigada conference. They are always up there near the top of the “Number of messages received” stats (an average of around 3 or 4 daily), but the most amazing thing is that people there get answers!!! Somebody will write in and say, “Our church is adopting the Hohga Bohga people. Can anyone tell us how to begin?” And all of a sudden, people start replying from all over the planet! “My uncle is an on-site worker among the Hohga Bohga. I’ll send you his email address directly via email.” “I’m headed to the Hohga Bohga next month to visit relatives. Can I help?” “Our agency is very interested in the Hohga Bohga. Call us at…” Etc.

In fact, recently, the moderator for this successful conference has recently begun archiving standing resources in the file archival area there. For example, to obtain a catalogue of Caleb Project’s resources on unreached peoples (no doubt including the Hohga Bohga :-) ), you just send an email message to hubatxcdotorg and in the body of the message write
get brigada-peoples caleb_project_resources

Chris has said he would be happy to do this for other organizations with resources as well. (Nice guy.) You might have to be a member to get this stuff. To join the other 300 networking mobilizers there, just send email to hubatxcdotorg with only the line
subscribe brigada-peoples

in the message body. Then you won’t miss a thing on the Hohga Bohga. :-) Or any other least reached people group. :-) These guys are fulfilling the vision of Brigada. And many are very thankful!

CAN YOU HELP GET MEDICINE TO A SICK GIRL IN ISTANBUL?
If you know someone going to Istanbul within the next week or so, you might be able to save the life of a young girl in Istanbul? Yvonne Wood, of the Nashville branch of the US Center for World Mission, is trying to get some emergency meds to the little girl and would much rather have someone carry it in than ship it. It is a matter of great urgency! Can you help? If so, write Yvonne at 74223dot211atcompuservedotcom.

COMMUNICATION SECURITY FOR FRIENDS IN SENSITIVE SITUATIONS
Make sure you always pray regularly for friends in sensitive places! Pray that they will know how to communicate – and you will know how to best communicate with them!

————————————–

LIST OF INDIA GROUPS IS IN THE PIPELINE…

Word on the street is that several key research arms in India (including CGAI, FMC, CONS, NIN, NF, and PI) are putting final touches to a most excellent list of people groups in India with demographic, linguistic and religious information on each people. If this rumor turns out to be true, it’ll be a major help for the many who are praying and trying to assist these peoples. So… would you take a moment today to pray for the people trying to boil down this list?

————————————–

NOW YOU CAN SAVE BUCKS WHEN CALLING FROM OVERSEAS
Heard about CrossLink? Sounds to me like we’d better start hearing about it. It’s a Christian telephone access company that makes it possible for you to call the USA from overseas for pennies instead of big bucks. “CrossLink gives a rebate, too,” says Jim Munn, who wrote to recommend the service this past week, …”to be paid to the charity of our choice. So missionaries can support their work while saving money on calls! For more info, call CrossLink at (512) 292-3308, FAX (512) 282-5877. No E-mail, apparently…!! As an example of their pricing, I can call the U.S. from France for 40 cents a minute, 24 hours a day. The rate for France Telecom is 81 cents a minute, with a cheap rate at inconvenient times of 68 cents a minute.” As an extra fringe benefit, Jim says CrossLink has now connected their accounts to toll-free lines, which means that overseas residents can finally call those infamous toll-free numbers (which were unavailable before). However — the 40 cents still applies when calling from overseas. No free lunch. But at last you can at least have a crumb or two! :-)

————————————–

TURN YOUR RADIO ON… IN ZILLIONS OF DIFFERENT LANGUAGES
Thanks to Arnie Remtema, who wrote this past week to say, “I have just posted on our WEB site the complete listing of all World by 2000 International broadcasts by ethcode and language giving the time of broadcast, meterband, and geographical area (target) the broadcasts are intended. There is a link from our home page or you may go directly to the details at:

http://www.wb2000.org/airtotal.html

We plan to update this page whenever there are changes, usually quarterly but more often as necessary. Arnie”

Thanks Arnie! What a great resource! I just pulled this page up and it’s fascinating to see the sheer quantity of outreach via the WB2000 cooperation!!! Thanks to the great pace you all are setting!

————————————–

“DID YOU KNOW?” – FROM OUR UKRAINIAN CORRESPONDENT
In this, the second installment of our new column, “Did you know?” [You were sitting on the edge of your seat, right?], we present this little-known fact: If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle; if the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died as a result of wounds received in battle; if the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.

TROUBLE GETTING A GOOD PRICE ON THE CD???
[][] Last week’s Brigada Today mentioned a great deal on getting Encyclopedia Britannica (” WANT A GREAT CD ENCYCLOPEDIA FOR $79?”). Some of us ordered and were able to get it for the price Greg Parsons prophesied. (Actually, I guess it’s Encyclopedia Britannica that gets the prophet. :-)) In fact, mine has already arrived and I’ve already been looking up some of the people groups that our ministry is currently researching. Likewise, another Brigada participant (Paul) wrote to say, “Just wanted to drop a note of appreciation for the neat tips in the Brigada TODAY’s. I have gotten the MERCURY News service which you recommended, and just ordered the Encyclopedia Britannica. Both of these are great since we travel full-time and have to be creative about how we get our information.” So it’s working . . . for some. Another reader (Jim) wrote to say, “I guess I didn’t luck out. I just called the 800 number you mentioned for a $79 CD-ROM of Encyclopedia Britannica, and they wanted $299 + $7 shipping. Beyond my budget. They wanted some kind of code that was on the promotional mailing.” The only thing I can figure is that Jim’s voice sounded so much richer . . . :-). . . or maybe he actually just got a different sales person. So if you tried and got turned away at the $306 end of the spectrum, you might try, try again… Sorry!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM IRAN
In the harsh deserts and the Zagros mountains of southwestern Iran live a tribe of nomads called the Qashqa’i (pronounced Kash-kai-EE). Totaling nearly one million, they support themselves by raising sheep and camels, and by weaving distinctive carpets. Most Qashqa’i take a pragmatic view of Islam; few observe daily prayers, and few if any fast during Ramadan. Although there are no known Christians, churches, Bibles, broadcasts, or missionaries among them, they are not hidden from God, who has been raising up people around the world to pray fervently for the Qashqa’i.
(Source: Anglican Frontier Missions, afmatxcdotorg )
Global Glimpse is compiled each week by John Hanna, Caleb Project, Littleton, CO.

MORE FOR FOLKS ON THE MOVE
Paul (mentioned in the item above) is on the road a lot and has to take his resources with him. He recommends, “1) HeavenWord Bible – http://www.goshen.net/heavenword/habfeat.html 2) SAGE Digital Library – 4 Volumes on 1 CD-ROM; complete theological library.”, saying “I’ve recently purchased both of these and they are GREAT! They may be obtained at a discount (aprx.$50 each) from Serious Software http://www.viper.net/clients/serious/csn.htm / 1-800-338-3229. Thanks for the tip, Paul!

A CALL TO PRAYER FOR LIBYA
Mission agencies partnering together to reach Libya have called for a worldwide day of prayer for Libya, from 6 p.m. May 16 through 6 p.m. May 17. Efforts are being made to work through existing prayer mobilization networks. Key to this prayer day, though, will be the grass roots efforts of concerned Christians to mobilize prayer with resources already at hand. More information and ideas for “prayer fuel” will be distributed soon, but please mark your calendar now for this special prayer emphasis. Name requested as withheld. Thanks ____ !

————————————–

REMEMBER “WHAT CAN WE SEND TO DARREN?…”
Dec. 19th Brigada Today carried a request from a Darren, a fellow who had to teach a youth missions seminar. Well you responded to him … and this week he wrote back with a nice thank-you note and even included a written testimony from a grateful workshop participant at his retreat! So, on behalf of Darren and his readers, thanks Brigada family!!!

MORE PEOPLE HAMMING IT UP
Evidently, Blessings for Obedience bfoatxcdotorg can also connect your email to a ham radio signal and beam it out to those who live in obscure places. Write Kelly at bfoatxcdotorg for more info. (Thanks Jamon!)

————————————–

SCAM-WATCH
Have you heard about the latest scam??? Lewis Hudson tells us that some folks are being phoned under the guise of doing some kind of on-the-phone survey about computer use. In the process, the inquirers learn all kinds of things about what time the family is at home, what kind of computer they have [and thus, when and what to steal]. One guy was phoned in this way and his house was robbed the very next day – with the computer being the primary article stolen! Word to the wise: Watch on-the-phone surveys… even if they offer you free software.

RALPH WINTER’S WIFE FACING MORE DIFFICULTY
Please pray for Ralph Winter’s wife, Roberta. Robby Butler writes from the US Center… “Friday, January 18th, the Winters learned from the doctors that Mrs. Winter’s 12/31 x-rays show that she has a lesion (deterioration) in her first right rib. This alters her diagnosis from stage 1 to stage 2 myeloma. She also has a nodule in her lung, and cysts on her liver and pancreas. She has recovered well enough from her earlier treatments to seriously consider next steps, but for many years she has had a low-grade yeast infection which makes traditional chemotherapy (and its attendant suppression of the immune system) more dangerous. Continue praying with the Winter’s for God’s glory to be manifested in Mrs. Winter’s life.”

I CORINTHIANS 13 FOR CROSS-CULTURAL WORKERS
Thanks to Lydia Bischoff, our correspondent in the Czech Republic, who felt that this item (Author Unknown) would help new workers headed out cross-culturally. She received it from a friend in Ukraine:

1 Corinthians 13 – A Guide to Culture

If I speak with the tongue of a national, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

If I wear the national dress and understand the culture and all forms of etiquette, and if I copy all mannerisms so that I could pass for a national but have not love, I am nothing.

If I give all I possess to the poor, and if I spend my energy without reserve, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love endures long hours of language study, and is kind to those who mock his accent; love does not envy those who stayed home; love does not exalt his home culture, is not proud of his national superiority,

Does not boast about the way we do it back home, does not seek his own ways, is not easily provoked into telling about the beauty of his home country, does not think evil about this culture;

Love bears all criticism about his home culture, believes all good things about this new culture, confidently anticipates being at home in this place, endures all inconveniences.

Love never fails: but where there is cultural anthropology, it will fail; where there is contextualization it will lead to syncretism; where there is linguistics, it will change.

For we know only part of the culture and we minister to only part.

But when Christ is reproduced in this culture, then our inadequacies will be insignificant.

When I was in America I spoke as an American, I understood as an American, I thought as an American; but when I left America I put way American things.

Now we adapt to this culture awkwardly; but He will live in it intimately: now I speak with a strange accent, but he will speak to the heart.

And now these three remain: cultural adaptation, language study, and love.

But the greatest of these is love.

[Ed. Note: Wow — I wish I’d said that! :-)

News and Notes about Brigada, Your Gateway to Missions Networking!
[Pass this issue to a friend! To subscribe, see instructions at end.]

Writing today from Paris, France; As of last week, there were 4329 Participants! [Lord willing, next week Brigada Today will return to its more regular format – if there is one. :-) It has been over a week since we’ve wanted to have access to “mission mail.” (We didn’t want to beam your messages into the 10/40 Window land where we were traveling!)]

In this issue….

* COOPERATION IS ALIVE AND WELL!!!
* HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE PEOPLE MOVEMENT AMONG THE…??!!!
* GATEWAY PEOPLE CLUSTER CONSULTATION, FOR YOUR CALENDAR!!!
* “THE POLICEMEN WON’T LET US GO HOME”

————————————–

COOPERATION IS ALIVE AND WELL!!!
I’ve just come out of a 10/40 Window nation having completed (with the help of a team of four of us in all) a pre-search/setup trip for a new project among a Muslim people group. It was great to see new opportunities and super to experience the love of new Muslim friends in a smaller city where there are no expatriate testimonies of the Messiah . . . but perhaps the most exciting thing for me was the spirit of cooperation we enjoyed from other witnesses already on-site in nearby (like 6 and 7 hours away) cities. There was a tremendous commitment to help us get started! And on our way back through Europe, thanks to a new friend in Paris (who hosted our visit and arranged appointments with those who work with immigrants from this nation – Thanks Freddie!!!!), we experienced again the mighty power of shared vision and the uniting spirit of prayer. Folks, God is on the move in our midst and he’s doing it through:

1. Prayer (E.g., “Praying through the Window” campaigns, prayer journeys, and the prayers of saints who have been lifting up these needs for many years previous!!!, etc.)
2. Shared Vision (E.g., AD2000 & Beyond’s JP2000 list of least reached people, the Gateway People Cluster Consultation mentioned below, Gateway People Cluster Advocates, etc.)
3. Renewal and revival (probably as a result of step “1” above! :-))

The Internet doesn’t hurt a bit either! One worker from Brussels took the train all the way from Belgium just to meet with us here in Paris – due to his concern and commitment to the people group we’re researching . . . and, according to him, because he’s fascinated by the prospects of more networking through Brigada! Yahooo!!! Y We put him on the marketing staff right away!!! :-) The brainstorming session we’ve just had at the dining room table included everything from opening up Internet hubs in the 10/40 Window to new tourism industry!!! Tentmaking prospects are unending. And God will use them . . . as he answers all our prayers together.

————————————–

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE PEOPLE MOVEMENT AMONG THE…??!!!
In a nation near the one we were researching, we heard amazing reports (verified from 3 different sources) of literally thousands of conversions in what appears to be nothing short of a “people movement” in North Africa among a Muslim people group that we probably should best leave unspecified. But the prospects are amazing. And the greatest part is that God’s doing it all through networking . . . and nationals already on the ground. Keep your ear close to the ground as we try to gain permission to publicize a portion of this success story. Prior to that, however, let us check for the advisability of the release of that information. We just want to make sure that no one suffers as a result of our attempt to rejoice and give hope to others working among Muslims. Keep listening! Meanwhile, we’re going to try to recruit several of these new converts to join in an international team to kick off work in the new land we’re praying for!

————————————–

GATEWAY PEOPLE CLUSTER CONSULTATION, FOR YOUR CALENDAR!!!
The AD2000 and Beyond Movement is planning a consultation focusing on developing key contact for clusters of people groups. The consultation will be held April 17-19, 1997 in Pasadena, CA. Ministry leaders, strategists, and unreached people advocates are encouraged to attend.

Approximately 140 clusters have been identified, into which the majority of the 1739 peoples on the Joshua Project 2000 list fit. (Examples include the Kashmiri, Sundanese, Kazaks, Fulani, Chinese minorities, Levant Arab, S. American Indigenous, and many others.) Key contacts for these clusters could facilitate communication and help churches, agencies and individuals work together more effectively to reach these peoples. The over all goal of this consultation is to bring reater definition and focus to the concept of Gateway People Clusters and identify the key contacts who might help others take advantage of opportunities and avoid ministry pitfalls as they work in the 10/40 Window.

Organizers are praying that by the close of the meeting, individuals and teams will be identified as key contacts for dozens of the Gateway People Clusters and a plan will be in place to identify other key contacts as they develop. One of the key issues is contact between field-focused partnerships and resource-based advocacy.

History:
In December 1994, Phill Butler, Patrick Johnstone and John Robb met with Luis Bush to explore the idea of consultations for the Gateway People Clusters. Since this meeting the concept and visibility of the Gateway Peoples has continued to develop. At the launch of Joshua Project 2000 in December 1995, a committee was established to identify people who serve or could serve as consultants for the Gateway Peoples (key contacts).

On October 24, 1996, 28 people representing adopt-a-people programs and agencies met. Among other things, this group agreed to convene a consultation on the Gateway People Clusters of the Joshua Project 2000 list.

Now is the time, before GCOWE ’97, to study the Gateway People Cluster concept. There is a felt need to bring better definition and focus to this concept. Understandable terminology and framework are needed.

Task Force:
A planning task force for the consultation is being pulled together. So far, this task force includes:
Phill Butler / Mats Tunehag (Interdev),
John Robb (MARC),
Patrick Johnstone (WEC),
Ralph Winter (WCIU),
Eric Watt (CBN WorldReach),
Luis Bush (AD2000 and Beyond),
Doug Lucas (Team Expansion/Brigada),
Mike Stroope (Cooperative Services Intl.),
and others.

Gregory Fritz (Caleb Project) has been appointed chairman of the planning task force and to oversee the consultation.

“THE POLICEMEN WON’T LET US GO HOME”
[The following is a letter I wrote this past week to my children and wife after visiting with a family which had previously worked in a North African land with a primary goal of telling about the Messiah – a missionary, of sorts, though such work isn’t really officially permitted in North Africa. We asked permission to make this article available to others in a more ‘published’ form and the family was willing to grant it, under the condition that his name be removed and his current address be left secret. So – republish this as you desire, but out of courtesy, please do so with sensitivity. And most of all, pray that the family described below will be allowed back into the country the family has come to love – or that many others will be raised up to take their place there!
For the glory and growth of the Kingdom,

“THE POLICEMEN WON’T LET US GO HOME”
Jan. 7, 1996

Dear Penny, Christopher, and Caleb,

Tonight we enjoyed a wonderful meal with a family that has just months ago been denied access back into ?????? [a Muslim land in North Africa]. They had labored there for years… learning the language, trying to establish a business that would allow them continued residence, and trying to share a simple life that honored the Messiah, the Christ. But this man (we’ll call him John but that’s not his real name) left his home one day, a few months back, just to take a friend’s wife to the airport in a neighboring land. When he drove back to the border, he was delayed… and delayed… and delayed… until finally the border guards told him he was not going to be permitted to reenter! He was floored. His wife and children were in there, . . . his business, his life was there. The last few years of work were there. But that didn’t matter. He wasn’t allowed to go back to his family.

When he called his family, later that evening, they were struck with grief. What did all this mean? Why would this happen? What had he done wrong? When “John” asked his wife what she wanted to do, her brave reply was that she felt she simply must allow the kids to finish their last 10 days of school. Separated, spending the night apart as a result of a force they could not change, they stayed that evening on opposite sides of a border they could not cross.

Days passed… letters to congressmen followed from all over the world… ambassadors made calls… but to no avail. The government wasn’t about to change its mind. Some two weeks later, the government allowed him to go get his family, and some time after that, they let him go back to his house to pack everything up and close out his affairs. His life there ended.

Tonight, his 6-year-old daughter – we’ll call her Mary (but that’s not her real name) – asked me if I’d like to leave the table to play Stratego with her in the next room. I said I’d love to. As we were setting up all those little red and blue figures, I asked her quietly, “So… do you miss your house in ?????? [the Muslim land]?” She looked up from the board like a young woman… and her eyes instantly welled up in tears. She paused, put down another figure, then looked me straight in the eye and said, “The policemen won’t let us go home.” Then she came over and hugged my neck. I asked her, “Which house do you like more – the one there or the one here?” Without hesitation, she said, “The one there. It’s home.” (At that point her four-year-old brother added, “I like the one here ’cause it’s got two bathrooms.” :-) ) After I gave her brother an understanding smile, I turned back to “Mary” and said, “Well, what do you suppose we ought to do about that?” She replied, after thinking for a moment, “Well maybe God will change the policemen’s minds.” I said that was totally possible and I suggested we pray. She agreed, so right there beside all those generals and the two flags on the Stratego board, we bowed our heads, folded our hands, and began to pray.

“Father, Mary is very sad because she’s been asked to leave the only home she’s ever known… and the one she loved… and the people she loved. And now she misses that home… and she and her Daddy and her whole family are wondering whoever will live a life for the Messiah in that land now. Now there’s no one there to tell them that Jesus is Lord. Please Lord… please let them back in… and if you choose not to make the policemen do that… please heal Mary’s heart and the hearts of her whole family . .. so they won’t ache for their friends or their house or their town back in the town where she grew up. We pray all this in Jesus’ name, Amen.”

I raised my head and Mary raised hers and she looked at me and said, “I probably won’t pray because I get all shy when I pray out loud sometimes, especially if I’m crying.” “That’s okay, Mary,” I quickly answered. “Jesus understands. You don’t have to pray out loud.”

Then my eyes started fogging up with tears. I looked over at her brother and he was just as wide-eyed as could be. Then I looked back at Mary and now tears were running down my cheeks and she said, “It made you cry too.” I choked out, “Yes Mary – it made me cry too. And, here’s what I’m going to promise you. I’m going to do everything I can . . . and I’m going to pray really really hard . . . that God raises up a new family to go back into the town where you grew up to live there to tell people that Jesus is Lord, so they can learn that He’s the Messiah.”

And as I wiped the tears from my cheeks, and tried to clear my throat, she looked at me again, and do you know what she said? She looked back and said, “Do you know what else? We had two turtles there.” I laughed and, as she began telling me about their two pet turtles, I remembered she was just 6 and then realized what a young woman she was. I thought of all the 6-year-olds back home who think about all kinds of things . . . television, playing, school, and everything else… but few of them would shed tears about the fact that their family had just been asked to leave their home in a Muslim land, most probably because their Daddy had been too busy telling people about Jesus. Then, probably about the time she got to the part about the little local boy who was willing to keep one of their turtles for them, I pulled her brother close, and reached over and pulled her close, and gave them both a big hug.

How I long for the ?????? [Muslim people group] of ?????? [country in N. Africa] to learn about the Christ, the Messiah. And how I yearn for workers to come here and pick up the baton, . . . to create businesses and agencies and jobs that would permit them to stay in the country for years to come . . . and maybe even to visit Mary’s turtle someday! … and all her other friends. Tomorrow, Lord willing, we cross that border and we’ll see Mary’s town and a whole lot of others . . . and all the while, I’ll be praying, . . . “Lord, please raise up another John . . .and another Mary’s Mother, and another Mary and her brother.
Please Lord. Amen.”

Love,

Dad
