COMMUNICATION SECURITY FOR FRIENDS IN SENSITIVE SITUATIONS
Make sure you always pray regularly for friends in sensitive places! Pray that they will know how to communicate – and you will know how to best communicate with them!

LIST OF INDIA GROUPS IS IN THE PIPELINE…

Word on the street is that several key research arms in India (including CGAI, FMC, CONS, NIN, NF, and PI) are putting final touches to a most excellent list of people groups in India with demographic, linguistic and religious information on each people. If this rumor turns out to be true, it’ll be a major help for the many who are praying and trying to assist these peoples. So… would you take a moment today to pray for the people trying to boil down this list?

NOW YOU CAN SAVE BUCKS WHEN CALLING FROM OVERSEAS
Heard about CrossLink? Sounds to me like we’d better start hearing about it. It’s a Christian telephone access company that makes it possible for you to call the USA from overseas for pennies instead of big bucks. “CrossLink gives a rebate, too,” says Jim Munn, who wrote to recommend the service this past week, …”to be paid to the charity of our choice. So missionaries can support their work while saving money on calls! For more info, call CrossLink at (512) 292-3308, FAX (512) 282-5877. No E-mail, apparently…!! As an example of their pricing, I can call the U.S. from France for 40 cents a minute, 24 hours a day. The rate for France Telecom is 81 cents a minute, with a cheap rate at inconvenient times of 68 cents a minute.” As an extra fringe benefit, Jim says CrossLink has now connected their accounts to toll-free lines, which means that overseas residents can finally call those infamous toll-free numbers (which were unavailable before). However — the 40 cents still applies when calling from overseas. No free lunch. But at last you can at least have a crumb or two! :-)

TURN YOUR RADIO ON… IN ZILLIONS OF DIFFERENT LANGUAGES
Thanks to Arnie Remtema, who wrote this past week to say, “I have just posted on our WEB site the complete listing of all World by 2000 International broadcasts by ethcode and language giving the time of broadcast, meterband, and geographical area (target) the broadcasts are intended. There is a link from our home page or you may go directly to the details at:

http://www.wb2000.org/airtotal.html

We plan to update this page whenever there are changes, usually quarterly but more often as necessary. Arnie”

Thanks Arnie! What a great resource! I just pulled this page up and it’s fascinating to see the sheer quantity of outreach via the WB2000 cooperation!!! Thanks to the great pace you all are setting!

“DID YOU KNOW?” – FROM OUR UKRAINIAN CORRESPONDENT
In this, the second installment of our new column, “Did you know?” [You were sitting on the edge of your seat, right?], we present this little-known fact: If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle; if the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died as a result of wounds received in battle; if the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.

TROUBLE GETTING A GOOD PRICE ON THE CD???
[][] Last week’s Brigada Today mentioned a great deal on getting Encyclopedia Britannica (” WANT A GREAT CD ENCYCLOPEDIA FOR $79?”). Some of us ordered and were able to get it for the price Greg Parsons prophesied. (Actually, I guess it’s Encyclopedia Britannica that gets the prophet. :-)) In fact, mine has already arrived and I’ve already been looking up some of the people groups that our ministry is currently researching. Likewise, another Brigada participant (Paul) wrote to say, “Just wanted to drop a note of appreciation for the neat tips in the Brigada TODAY’s. I have gotten the MERCURY News service which you recommended, and just ordered the Encyclopedia Britannica. Both of these are great since we travel full-time and have to be creative about how we get our information.” So it’s working . . . for some. Another reader (Jim) wrote to say, “I guess I didn’t luck out. I just called the 800 number you mentioned for a $79 CD-ROM of Encyclopedia Britannica, and they wanted $299 + $7 shipping. Beyond my budget. They wanted some kind of code that was on the promotional mailing.” The only thing I can figure is that Jim’s voice sounded so much richer . . . :-). . . or maybe he actually just got a different sales person. So if you tried and got turned away at the $306 end of the spectrum, you might try, try again… Sorry!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM IRAN
In the harsh deserts and the Zagros mountains of southwestern Iran live a tribe of nomads called the Qashqa’i (pronounced Kash-kai-EE). Totaling nearly one million, they support themselves by raising sheep and camels, and by weaving distinctive carpets. Most Qashqa’i take a pragmatic view of Islam; few observe daily prayers, and few if any fast during Ramadan. Although there are no known Christians, churches, Bibles, broadcasts, or missionaries among them, they are not hidden from God, who has been raising up people around the world to pray fervently for the Qashqa’i.

MORE FOR FOLKS ON THE MOVE
Paul (mentioned in the item above) is on the road a lot and has to take his resources with him. He recommends, “1) HeavenWord Bible – http://www.goshen.net/heavenword/habfeat.html 2) SAGE Digital Library – 4 Volumes on 1 CD-ROM; complete theological library.”, saying “I’ve recently purchased both of these and they are GREAT! They may be obtained at a discount (aprx.$50 each) from Serious Software http://www.viper.net/clients/serious/csn.htm / 1-800-338-3229. Thanks for the tip, Paul!

A CALL TO PRAYER FOR LIBYA
Mission agencies partnering together to reach Libya have called for a worldwide day of prayer for Libya, from 6 p.m. May 16 through 6 p.m. May 17. Efforts are being made to work through existing prayer mobilization networks. Key to this prayer day, though, will be the grass roots efforts of concerned Christians to mobilize prayer with resources already at hand. More information and ideas for “prayer fuel” will be distributed soon, but please mark your calendar now for this special prayer emphasis. Name requested as withheld. Thanks ____ !

REMEMBER “WHAT CAN WE SEND TO DARREN?…”
Dec. 19th Brigada Today carried a request from a Darren, a fellow who had to teach a youth missions seminar. Well you responded to him … and this week he wrote back with a nice thank-you note and even included a written testimony from a grateful workshop participant at his retreat! So, on behalf of Darren and his readers, thanks Brigada family!!!

MORE PEOPLE HAMMING IT UP
Evidently, Blessings for Obedience bfo@xc.org can also connect your email to a ham radio signal and beam it out to those who live in obscure places. Write Kelly at bfo@xc.org for more info. (Thanks Jamon!)

SCAM-WATCH
Have you heard about the latest scam??? Lewis Hudson tells us that some folks are being phoned under the guise of doing some kind of on-the-phone survey about computer use. In the process, the inquirers learn all kinds of things about what time the family is at home, what kind of computer they have [and thus, when and what to steal]. One guy was phoned in this way and his house was robbed the very next day – with the computer being the primary article stolen! Word to the wise: Watch on-the-phone surveys… even if they offer you free software.

RALPH WINTER’S WIFE FACING MORE DIFFICULTY
Please pray for Ralph Winter’s wife, Roberta. Robby Butler writes from the US Center… “Friday, January 18th, the Winters learned from the doctors that Mrs. Winter’s 12/31 x-rays show that she has a lesion (deterioration) in her first right rib. This alters her diagnosis from stage 1 to stage 2 myeloma. She also has a nodule in her lung, and cysts on her liver and pancreas. She has recovered well enough from her earlier treatments to seriously consider next steps, but for many years she has had a low-grade yeast infection which makes traditional chemotherapy (and its attendant suppression of the immune system) more dangerous. Continue praying with the Winter’s for God’s glory to be manifested in Mrs. Winter’s life.”

DON’T FORGET TO PRAY ON FEB. 5, THE “NIGHT OF POWER”
Those interested in praying for Muslim friends on the “Night of Power” will want to download additional information on the event. Get it by sending email to hub@xc.org with only this line in the text of the message:

I CORINTHIANS 13 FOR CROSS-CULTURAL WORKERS
Thanks to Lydia Bischoff, our correspondent in the Czech Republic, who felt that this item (Author Unknown) would help new workers headed out cross-culturally. She received it from a friend in Ukraine:

1 Corinthians 13 – A Guide to Culture

If I speak with the tongue of a national, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

If I wear the national dress and understand the culture and all forms of etiquette, and if I copy all mannerisms so that I could pass for a national but have not love, I am nothing.

If I give all I possess to the poor, and if I spend my energy without reserve, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love endures long hours of language study, and is kind to those who mock his accent; love does not envy those who stayed home; love does not exalt his home culture, is not proud of his national superiority,

Does not boast about the way we do it back home, does not seek his own ways, is not easily provoked into telling about the beauty of his home country, does not think evil about this culture;

Love bears all criticism about his home culture, believes all good things about this new culture, confidently anticipates being at home in this place, endures all inconveniences.

Love never fails: but where there is cultural anthropology, it will fail; where there is contextualization it will lead to syncretism; where there is linguistics, it will change.

For we know only part of the culture and we minister to only part.

But when Christ is reproduced in this culture, then our inadequacies will be insignificant.

When I was in America I spoke as an American, I understood as an American, I thought as an American; but when I left America I put way American things.

Now we adapt to this culture awkwardly; but He will live in it intimately: now I speak with a strange accent, but he will speak to the heart.

And now these three remain: cultural adaptation, language study, and love.

But the greatest of these is love.

[Ed. Note: Wow — I wish I’d said that! :-)
