PIT-STOP DENVER SETS THE PACE FOR LOUISVILLE!
What a weekend! Folks came from points in Canada, Florida, Texas, Kansas, Minnesota… seemingly from all over! Many had heard about Pit-Stop Denver through Brigada, . . . others through brochures, others by word of mouth. Each of the 10 congregations met in general sessions and in small groups to focus on developing their own strategic plans to launch a love affair with an unreached people. Greg Fritz (Caleb Project), Steve Moore (Kingdom Building Ministries), Eric Derry and Doug Lucas (Team Expansion), and others shared ideas, planning approaches, and case studies on reaching the unreached with the PACE approach. Everyone present received a notebook full of tools and a diskette stuffed with templates and info. If you missed Pit-Stop Denver, never fear!!! PACE Pit-Stops are coming to Louisville, May 30-31! For more information, write Bill Reynolds at: 76152dot2375atcompuservedotcom or see http://www.brigada.org/pace. Join those who are making a difference. And . . . yes . . . the rumor is true… one group (headed by Bill Lewis of “Into all the World” ministry, Ontario) is even planning a “prayer safari” to the Afari! :-)

NOW YOU CAN “INTERNET PHONE” A NON-INTERNET USER!
I remember when Penny and I (have I told you about my beautiful wife Penny??? See her picture by clicking at http://www.teamexpansion.org/mhty.htm used to try to call back to the USA via ham radio from Montevideo, Uruguay. (I’m KB9ZAW now; at that time I was N4HHU in case any of my old 1982 buddies are listening.) If you’ve used ham radio, you’ll no doubt identify with the fact that, though those phone patches sounded like “Donald Duck voices” at times, they were very comforting and reassuring. I talked with my Dad in the hospital in Indianapolis, IN nightly during his hospitalization with a heart attack in 1983. When it came to personally touching base . . . or hearing someone’s voice. . . there was nothing like ham radios and phone patches…. until now, that is.

Now – enter Net2Phone. Using Net2Phone, you initiate a phone call by logging onto the Internet, then calling up the free Net2Phone application, entering your phone number (as if dialing it from within the USA), then hitting the “enter” key! It’s easy! Through the magic of the Internet, Net2Phone’s connection with a long distance service (that they own) starts automatically dialing and connecting to your desired number… anywhere in the world! So the person on the other end of the line no longer needs a computer to talk to you!!! Hello grandma!

It was Wayne Penner wpenneratnutecnetdotcomdotbr writing from Cuiabá, Brazil, who first brought it to our attention. Wayne stated up front, “The connection is not 100%, but the price compensates the lack of quality for overseas users.” The price is unbelievable. 1am-7pm (EST) – .15, 7pm-1am (EST) – .10, and 800 numbers – Free! (Do you realize that overseas users would never again have to chide me for not giving an alternative to toll-free numbers??? :-) Because from now on, with Net2Phone, they could call them direct for free from anywhere in the world????) Sound too good to be true? It did to me too. So I decided to check it out. I went to http://www.net2phone.com like Wayne suggested (he doesn’t work for them by the way! :-)) and downloaded the software. Actually it isn’t a big download by today’s standards. Within a few minutes, it was installed and with a few clicks on some help screens (provided) I pretty much figured it out. A few clicks later, I had dialed the toll-free number of our mission office and was talking through the laptop from the Internet to our secretary’s voice! (Actually, it was her recorded voice on voice mail; But Susy still sounds happy with the love of the Lord even on voice mail!!! :-)) Bottom line? If you’re overseas and you’d like to make free toll-free calls, give this software a try.

You can also use your credit card to pay $25 at a time to buy what Net2Phone calls “Debit Cards” to call anywhere in the world. Naturally, if you’re calling from a foreign location to within the USA, it’s much cheaper — probably 10 cents/min. or so normally. If you’re calling from Algeria to Afghanistan, it’s still cheaper than trying to use normal long distance… probably $1.20/min. or something like that.

The caveat: You must have a multi-media computer with a modem/mic set-up. In other words, you must be able to speak to your laptop and hear through the speakers. But just about anything you buy from the current market will let you do that.

So… happy phone-patching. From Uruguay, Penny and I never had it so good! :-)

BRIGADA MISSIONARY FAMILY SAYS THANKS!
Remember the family that wanted to hear back from us as to a location that they should target to find the “least reached people on earth?” Their request spawned the “final frontier” file that is now posted in the Brigada archive. The guy wrote this past week, “Dear Doug and Brigada Family, I downloaded the Brigada file “finalfrontier” like it was a Christmas gift and I was five years old. Inside was info better than my favorite GI Joe. Thanks for doing this labor of love and thanks to the 33 people who took the time to share their wisdom. From your list my wife and I have narrowed it down to two peoples you suggested. Now it will be somewhat up to the mission agency we will be going with, but they have shown great interest in sending us to the “final frontier.” I was encouraged to read the passion with which the 33 respondents advocated their people groups. I will keep you posted on our progress. We have to sell our house and stuff and hope to be on the field by the end of the year. (Don’t worry we have much experience moving and have lived overseas on four occasions so we think we can meet that deadline.) Our support is all in. Praise the Lord. Blessings, John Missionary Doe” Wow. Exciting. So … your “finalfrontier” file is making a difference at least in this one family’s life. They read it, took it to the bank, and are pursuing your recommendations. Thanks Brigada family! And thanks John Missionary Doe! We’ll count on hearing from you again! You’re like… our “living link missionaries!” :-)

BIBLE DISTRIBUTION IN CHINA NOT KEEPING UP WITH CHURCH GROWTH
Thanks to Justin Long for updating us on Bibles and church growth in China. This past week, he wrote, “…Many evangelicals estimate the Christian population to be 40 to 60 million; yet at a maximum only 20 million Chinese believers presently own a Bible of their own. So despite the successes, the reality is that more than 20 to 40 million Chinese believers still do not own a Bible and have little access to one. Millions more spiritually interested seekers who want Bibles have even less access. Worse, current Bible distribution is not even keeping up with the growth rate of the church: according to the World Christian Encyclopedia (David B. Barrett, ed.), 2.5 million new adherents are being added to the Chinese church yearly (over 1.8 million through conversion alone). At this rate, Dr. Barrett estimates the Christian church in China will have more than 90 million members by the year 2000 (and perhaps sooner). Without a massive increase in current distribution rates, only 33 million believers will have access to a Bible: 57 million will go without. The largest house church group in China is a case in point. With 5 million adherents, 8,000 itinerating evangelists, and 200 missionaries in training, this movement adds more than 500,000 converts each year, and needs 630,000 Bibles annually…. Without Bibles, cults and false teachings will continue to be major problems. Many inquirers feel unable to make decisions for Christ. This highlights the urgent need for continuing supplies of Bibles from all sources….

COOL TOOLS
Ever heard of “For Missionaries Only?” They do tapes and books for missionaries (and others concerned for world ministry). Call them at 800-272-2442 or fax them at 509-548-6585. They seem to have it all! Acappella, Maranatha, Hosana/Integrity, Steve Green, GT & the Halo Express, Christmas music, . . . the works! Most CDs are $4.75, and Cassettes are $2.75, videos $8 average. Great prices. Great titles.

Or… headed to the mission field and you’d like to take you entire library in a CD-ROM pouch??? Contact Logos Software for a catalogue. Just write newswireatlogosdotcom or check out http://www.logos.com. Or call them at 800-87-logos or fax 360-675-8169. They’ve got zillions of electronic books, commentaries, etc., Bible handbooks… and on-line Bibles. Fast. Handy. Small. Lose the 4-inch thick books and put dozens of them on one CD!

And Jerry jerrykatbfdotorg has finished the list of sources for ordering Bibles! (Thanks for following through, Jerry!) Thanks to the whole Brigada family for joining in on responses. To get Jerry’s new list of places you can order all kinds of Bibles, send email to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the message:

NEW CONFERENCES LAUNCH!
In a flurry, several new unreached peoples conferences have launched in the wake of the People Cluster Conference in Pasadena and the Brigada family here listening to appeals for help! For example, brigada-peoples-punjabi just came on line for the Punjabis on the Brigada network. The Joshua Project 2000 lists 15 unreached peoples under the Punjabi Gateway Cluster. These total to more than a 108 million people worldwide with most of them living in South Asia! The brigada-peoples-punjabi conference will help interested individuals, churches and agencies send out or receive reports, prayer requests and learn of new ministry opportunities related to the Punjabi peoples and to network with others engaged in ministries to the Punjabis. To join this conference send an email message to hubatxcdotorg with the following line in the *body* of the message (subject ignored):
subscribe brigada-peoples-punjabi

Thanks to Joel and all other willing workers for helping with these “billboards” for prayer and mobilization! Some secure conferences have also been launched — but are private, unadvertised and “by invitation only.”

————————————–

REMEMBER THE OVERSEAS READERS
This past week, a Brigada Today participant from the Philippines wrote to remind us to remember those who are working/reading these updates overseas. When we describe conferences (she referred to the “Mentors Conference for Church Planters”) or programs, we need to always try to factor in contingencies for an international audience. It starts by providing more than just an 800 number… but it finishes by making sure that we think through the fact that we’re now a global community in this mission enterprise thing! Thanks to all for your patience as we struggle to learn how to do that!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
Mansour Hussein was killed by a shot in the head in a Christian book shop in Arbil, Iraqi Kurdistan. He was discovered by a co-worker on his arrival in the book shop. Mansour was an evangelical believer, a Kurd from a Muslim background. He was bold and fearless in the witness of his faith. Fellow Christians in Arbil say that there is little doubt that he died as a martyr testifying to the truth that is in Jesus. Mr. Hussein leaves a wife and an 18 month old son.

Global Glimpse is compiled each week by wonderful and wild John Hanna, Advocacy Director, Caleb Project, 10 W Dry Creek Circle, Littleton, CO 80120, USA; 303-730-4170, fax 303-730-4177, http://www.goshen.net/calebproject , jhannaatxcdotorg.

DOES PGP REALLY RAISE YOUR PROFILE?
We’re taking a survey. Are there any documented real specific cases where we known that using PGP raised someone’s profile overseas? If so, send them to jhannaatxcdotorg. Maybe we just suspect that it would raise? He’ll report back to us. Confidential contributions accepted.

ON THE HUNT FOR LINDA O’FLYNN
Those still trying to find Linda O’Flynn’s Perfect Image PC Service perfect-imageatjunodotcom would do better using, http://www.inworks.net/comm/image/image.htm as the URL. Linda tells us she inadvertently gave us the wrong URL the first time around.

WATCH THOSE ATTACHMENTS
By now you’ve received 69 warnings about AOL4Free.com, so you don’t need me to tell you about it again. Just remember to ‘watch those file attachments.’ This executable gives you more for your money… or should we say, less. Execute it and apparently it starts its dirty work of erasing files (if it can find “deltree.exe”). :-) Nasty little Trojan horse. For more info. see http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html. Thanks to John Rogers BCCYanadiatxcdotorg and everyone else for forwarding the warnings… Bottom line – don’t ever click on any executables you didn’t request from a reliable source. Opening up text messages is still harmless .. and if you have Office ’97, you could also open up WinWord “.doc” files without fear. Those still using previous versions of Word should beware that Word macro viruses are blossoming this spring. :-) Take heed… or hide!

GOT ANY VIETNAMESE BOOKS?
Inquiring minds want to know. Or at least Mike does. He’s looking for commentaries and other theological books in Vietnamese. If you know of any good sources please contact him at vnbooksatfcmrdotcom.

————————————–

… OR HOW ‘BOUT AN INTEREST IN EVANGELISM THROUGH LITERACY/ELEM. ED?
In that case, David Curtis DCurtisatmaildotlewistondotk12dotiddotus would be the next email address you’ll need. He’s got a passion for evangelism through literacy and Christian education training to elementary-aged children, beginning in Africa and beyond. Wants to facilitate the writing and production of good books for that use… and sounds very passionate about the whole thing.

BRIGADAFEST ’98 – PRAY THAT LOCATION WILL BE APPROVED
Tomorrow the dates/location go before a committee in Louisville, KY, for consideration for BrigadaFest ’98 (see last week’s Brigada Today, HOW ‘BOUT A BRIGADA FAMILY REUNION????). Pray that the local church there in Louisville will approve the proposal so we can start making solid plans!

DUST SETTLES FROM THE GATWAY PEOPLE CLUSTER CONSULTATION
Well, the dust is now settling from the Gateway People Cluster Consultation, held this past weekend at the US Center for World Mission in Pasadena, CA. I wish I could give you a full report but two or three issues are “in the way.” First, we all signed a security release stating that we’d be very careful about what we publicized. It would be a whole lot better for you to read the official press releases by subscribing to the consultation news conferences and retrieving the files that organizers have posted there. (To retrieve those files, create a message to hubatxcdotorg with these lines as the content:
subscribe gpcc-announce
filelist

Look the file list over when it comes to your inbox and use the “get” command to download the press releases you’d like to see.

But there’s a second reason it’s tough to give a full report. The truth is, we don’t know for sure what will come out of the conference. So much of the consultation was designed to be a kick-off of a process – the process of

1. recruiting and training more “resource advocates” (those who champion the cause of some unreached people group)
2. recruiting and training more “strategic partnership facilitators” (those who work mostly in the field to create more networking between field workers
3. creating training opportunities for both the preceding roles
4. launching additional consultations and networking opportunities to help breed more interaction between those who have a love for a common unreached group, and
5. refining a new kind of categorizing of the full JP2000 list of 1739 peoples into around 140 or so “cluster” groupings.

I can tell you that consultation delegates worked hard, very hard, at addressing all five of those goals, as well as hitting security and several other issues at the same time. Pages and pages of feedback were collected. They’ll now be collated and feedback will be given to conference delegates. This is an ongoing process. It’s a marathon not a spring. So let’s have patience . . . and see where this takes us. I believe we’re definitely moving forward.

And at least one other clarion call came out of the meeting: YACC. “Yet Another Call for a Clearinghouse.” Nearly every working group seemed to be asking for a source for information about people group mobilization tools, adoption cross-matching, and security training. Brigada-peoples can help in the meantime to pick up some of that . . . but I believe other tools will also rise to the surface in the months to come. So let the games begin . . . and let’s hope that this YACC results in a real option that works for all of us!

————————————–

FINAL FRONTIER – THE ANSWER
We received responses from some 33 different individuals to the recent request for recommending a “final frontier” least reached group for the “Brigada missionary couple.” Remember that this particular couple had volunteered to go anywhere in the world that God would send them . . . but their quest was to go to the most desperately unreached group. Well, . . . I know we can’t claim to have “the answer” . . . because the answer is that there are desperate needs in so many places. But what I can promise you is that the representative sampling you’ll receive in our compilation is a group of some of the most desperately unreached peoples in the world. To get the 15-page compilation, send email to hubatxcdotorg with only this phrase in the text of the message:
get brigada finalfrontier

We’ll keep you up to date occasionally as this particular couple discerns God’s will for their lives!

(Note to those viewing this document on the web: This particular file won’t be placed the web because of its sensitivity. To retrieve it, use the “get” command above.)

————————————–

DIVERSITY MAGNIFIES GOD?
As I write this, I’m sitting here at the Gateway People Cluster Consultation (at the US Center for World Mission in Pasadena, CA), listening to John Bendor-Samuel, President of Wycliffe. The key issue of his devotional this Friday morning is that “diversity magnifies God.” It never occurred to me before that God would be glorified through what I took as disunity. His thread of thought took us through the Babylonian captivity and the way it dealt with idolatry and through the development of synagogues. In a sense, as Dr. Bendor-Samuel pointed out, God used the judgment that resulted from Babel to glorify Him. Each language has its own beauty, its own power. It lifts up God in unique ways . . . that perhaps would never have been possible in one monolingual world. Of course, the final question he asked is the most interesting: What’s going to be the language of Heaven? Bendor-Samuel said we’d be multi-lingual. God actually said in Rev. 21 that they “would be my peoples” [plural]. We won’t have any problem understanding one another — ’cause the Bible says that in Heaven there’ll be no tears there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

————————————–

HOW DO WE LIFT UP LIBYA?
Well now there’s an easy way to get started. You’ll recall last week’s reference to one denomination’s emphasis on Libya PRAYER REQUEST FOR LIBYA. Well now a Libya network is enlarging that all the more to a worldwide thrust . . . and you can start by requesting a file that we’ve logged here at Brigada. Just send a note to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text:
get brigada libya-pray

Included is info on how to get a new video on prayer for Libya for just $5 (how can they produce the video, package it, and mail it to you for that price?????), and how to unite in a global plan to pray for Libya for one 24-hour period (6pm May 16 to 6pm 17). Sharp little packet for mobilizing prayer at you church or agency. Grab the “libya-pray” file for free!

SOUTH AFRICA FARES A TAD HIGH?
Having trouble finding a good fare to South Africa to attend GCOWE97? Try sending a note to brigada-travel-bidsatxcdotorg with info. about your travel needs. You’ll probably receive 5+ responses or “bids” from which you can choose… and some of them will be bottom dollar but top value. Also, by the way, we had previously published news about a travel agent in Canada who had worked out special fares to South Africa but apparently, she can always get half-off fares on SAA schaubeckatbaxterdotnet. You can also contact Celia Klare, the official GCOWE travel agent, at 800-847-4640 in the USA, 315-422-2612 for our non-USA participants, fax: 315-422-5932.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
This week mission leaders from across the 10/40 Window will be meeting to discuss how to further cooperation in reaching many of the world’s least-reached people groups. Possibly one of the most strategic meetings this year, discussions will revolve around how best to help link in churches which have adopted people groups and startup mission agencies as they begin to focus on specific unreached people groups. This is often a challenge because of the sensitive nature of ministry in most places in the 10/40 Window. Conference planners expect a great breakthrough in the areas of cooperation, partnership, and communication.

CHAT SPLAT – IRC FOR THEE?
Anybody know of any IRCs for missionaries? (An IRC is an “internet relay chat” or something like that; using special software, several people can “talk” [via the keyboard] to each other live; differs from email in that the communication is real time; all parties have to be on the Net at once.) If you do, email Jerry Witt at HALUSAatWITTYdotCOM. Jerry, please send us a list if you find some, okay?

————————————–

CORRECTION ON ADOPT-A-PEOPLE CLEARINGHOUSE
My bad on the reference to the Adopt-A-People Clearinghouse a couple of weeks ago. I mentioned that I didn’t believe it had ever been their purpose to “register” adoptions (by a church or individual) or report them upon request by inquirers. I got back a note from the AAPC staff person (I think there’s currently just one or two) saying that indeed that always had been one of their priority purposes. I’ve asked them to drop us a couple of paragraphs on how they receive and/or distribute this info. I’m clueless, even though our mission organization is a supporting member! My bad.

————————————–

AN HTML EDITOR TO GO!
Need an HTML editor for your mission newsletter (that’s someone who prepares your written newsletter for the web)? Linda (see her web site at: http://www.inworks.net/comm/image/image.htm ) wants to help. Check out her services . . . e.g., $15 to prepare the bulletin for the web, $25 to post it on the site. She’d like to provide a central place for mission news.

You can now get a complete sample set of the 62 booklets including the Church Planting Guide, and the Pastoral Trainer’s Manual for US$95 plus US$25 seamail or US$50 airmail postage. To order, please send two checks to the Missionary Training Service (address below) in US dollars (one for US$72.50 and the other for the remaining amount – this is because they apparently can’t process checks above US$72.50 at the moment without incurring large charges).

Wow – a whole flurry of new conferences has emerged these past couple of weeks. One is BRIGADA-PEOPLES-QASHQAI, moderated by Justin Long of David Barrett’s office in Virginia, promises to wave the flag for the Qashai. According to the welcome message by Justin, “Only a miniscule number have ever met a Christian. There are some Christians in the cities, but not many have ventured out to the rural areas where they live. There is not even one church in the world that worships in their language, nor do they have any Christian radio broadcasts. The Bible hasn’t been translated into their language. There are nearly a million of them — but at most maybe 50,000 have heard the Gospel in their lives.” Join it by sending email to hubatxcdotorg with only this sentence in your email:
subscribe brigada-peoples-qashqai

There will probably be only one or two failings per week.

GOT RESOURCES? GET NETWORKING!
This just in from Mary Ann Stone of the AD2000 & Beyond International Office. Let’s load her up with all the resources we can find!!! “It is a delight to watch the growing response to Joshua Project 2000 goals of adoption networking and church planting for unreached peoples. The Lord is indeed placing the vision “a church for every people” on the hearts of individuals and organizations around the world. However, with such interest comes an increasing plea for resources which are both informative and motivational. Prayer teams and groups, researchers and church planters are hungry for a better understanding of the peoples to whom they have made a commitment.

To assist those concerns, AD2000 and Beyond, is seeking to compile a resource list of available videos and films which feature any of the Joshua Project 2000 unreached peoples. (List is available on the World Wide Web http://www.ad2000.org ) We plan to gather informative resources whether Christian or secular in nature. If you or your organization has produced or distributed such a video or film or know of others who may have done so, please contact Barb Bills at AD2000 barbatad2000dotorg with the following information as soon as possible:

* Name of the People targeted in the video or film.
* Country where the filming took place.
* Publisher name, address, phone, fax, and e-mail.
* Retail price for the video or film.
* Versions and formats for the resources.
* Languages in which available.
* Additional Contacts: Name, Organization, Address, Phone, Fax, Email.

These resources will eventually appear in a new column on the AD2000 Joshua Project 2000 peoples list and on our Web site at http://www.ad2000.org

TO DOUG: PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH!
This past week, I heard from a Brigada participant who made a good point. He said I had commented more than once on the way that international use of encryption (encoded) messages would always look suspect until it was utilized by the masses. So he asked courteously why I never used PGP or any other encryption software. “Hmmmm,” I said. “Because I routinely don’t have anything private to say in my typical notes,” I thought to myself. But you see, that’s exactly what 99% of all Internet users are saying . . . which makes the other 1% feel a bit anxious (and look suspicious) when they do choose to use PGP! So . . . starting this week, my signature (at the bottom) carries a reference to my PGP “public key” and I’ve pledged to start using PGP more as each week goes by. Yikes. The price we pay for progress! :-) But you know, he was right. If we really wanted to help secure email to be birthed on the net, we’d all go out and get PGP public keys (there’s no cost involved) and start using this stuff… or utilizing the new S/Mime (or is it S/Myme) built-in security in other emailers.

So how ’bout it, Brigada family. Can we start looking at this PGP stuff or what?

To learn more about PGP security, do a search on the net for it this week. Then send in your best PGP tutor file/URL to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg with
PGP HELP
in the subject line. We’ll make the results available to everybody next week and maybe we can help the whole world be more secure! :-)

PRAYER SCOREBOARD
As of yesterday, the Manna Church of Fayetteville, NC had logged 14,300+ churches committed to pray for least reached peoples on the Joshua Project 2000 list! Prayer-tracker Dick Gaffney wrote, “What a blessing to hear from people all over this globe who want to pray for the unreached people groups. These are exciting times!” If your church hasn’t registered, send a note to Dick at RGaff13817ataoldotcom. If you’ve already registered at Envision ’96 or with AD2000, you’ve already been recorded. Thanks for your work, Dick!

————————————–

FINAL REQUEST FOR FINAL FRONTIER
This is your last chance to participate in the Brigada study on which people group(s) would be most desperately unreached. Send your nominee to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg but please make the subject line read:
final frontier

We’ve gotten some great responses that will be reported on next week. I think you’ll be surprised at some of the results!

————————————–

EPISCOPALIANS HAVE A HOME IN CYBERSPACE
Apparently, Episcopalians can write to MissionsmobilizeratEpiscopaliandotorg to join a discussion group about mobilizing missions among their group. And guess what! They’re evidently very active in Brigada groups too! A few years ago, you might have concluded they were dying out. Guess it wasn’t only Mark Twain’s death that was greatly exaggerated! :-)

————————————–

CATCH AN EYE AND A HEART WITH THIS NEW GRAPHIC ARTS FIRM
We’re told that this new missionary prayer letter service designs prayer letters with eye-catching graphics and a professional layout to motivate readers. “Trevco Designs” is owned and operated by Brenda Branson, of The Evangelical Alliance Mission. There are evidently two options: design letter only and forward camera-ready copy to designated mailing service (2-day turnaround) or design letter and provide complete mailing service (1-week turnaround). For further information, references, or to request a brochure, contact Brenda bbransonatteamworlddotorg. Whew! What a relief this will be for some tired layout fingers! :-)

————————————–

GET PREVIOUS EDITIONS OF BRIGADA TODAY FOR FREE!
There are two ways to access previous editions of Brigada Today. The easiest, of course, is via the web at http://www.brigada.org where there’s even a search engine that will find that illusive text string you’re searching for (like… “Where do I write to get information on “Praying Through the Window III”?). But if you don’t have access to the web, you’re still in luck. Just send email to hubatxcdotorg with only the words,
filelist brigada

in the text of the message. In a few moments, you’ll receive an emailed message containing a list of all the files stored in the top level of the Brigada file archive. Just pick out the edition you want, by date, then send another message that contains something like this:
get brigada brigada-today.970411

Or whatever date you want! It’ll be automatically emailed to you immediately. Kind of like a nifty fax-back service . . . except no long distance bill! And it works from anywhere in the world!

————————————–

THE SECURTY DEBATE CONTINUES
In a recent Brigada Today, we mentioned “back-masking” (where, using special software tools, you can bury your message in the noise of a background to a graphic that you email to a buddy overseas; http://www.iquest.net/~mrmil/stego.html or http://www.enter.net/~chronos/cryptolog1.html#Stego ). A friend (thanks Art!) reminded us that . . . if your buddy’s email is being watched closely by sophisticated monitors . . . and he or she starts sending out pictures to the same people… and they’re not all that interesting anyway… :-) and maybe the same picture is going out with different binary signatures… suffice it to say that back-masking isn’t a panacea either. :-( So . . . once again, treat email as if it’s sending a post card… and watch what you say!

————————————–

SO WHERE DO YOU GET GOOD HEALTH INSURANCE FOR MISSIONARIES?
Karen Lafferty 100340dot3723atCompuServedotCOM would like to know! And guess what… she’s willing to compile a list for us!!! So, personnel guys, please get out that list and send her your best sources for good coverage, at home and abroad. She’ll compile the list and we’ll make it available here on Brigada. We’re especially interested in

1. policies that work for those living overseas
2. reasonable policies for missionaries that live and work in the USA
3. policies covering those who aren’t USA citizens

Thanks Karen!!! (Insurance sales people are welcome to respond too! :-)) Please send a three-line summary at the top of your page of info…. and . . . please limit your response to a page max. Give a couple of examples of premium costs please. Thanks!

————————————–

TAKE YOUR BEST SHOT: GIVE US YOUR BEST MISSIONS FILM
Steve Cox firstevanatcompuservedotcom wants to assemble a great list of missions videos, movies, and other AV/media resources and their sources. Please send him brief summaries and he’ll make the final list available to us in a couple of weeks. Thanks!

————————————–

WEB WATCH
Here’s a new prayer calendar at http://www.churches.com/world/Missions/worldpray and the author, Roger E. Doriot doriotreatticnetdotcom is even willing to email copies to those without web access! On the same page is the calendar for world leaders. Also, have you visited http://www.hotmail.com lately? They’re doing a great business with on-the-web email . . . and they can now also let you check your regular email box. It’s all free. (Thanks for the reminder from CMDNet, Bob!) Check it out! By the way, Bob’s got a great site himself at http://www.cmd.org.nz/books.html.

————————————–

WANT A LIST OF AGENCIES WILLING TO WORK WITH TENTMAKERS?
Chris did. He received email responses from Brigada Today participants and prepared a summary sheet of agencies and their addresses. So now, if you’re headed out as a tentmaker with the UN or whatever, you can link up with other tentmakers for service and support. Get Chris’ list by sending a note to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the email message:
get brigada un-tentmakers

As you guessed, the “un” stands for United Nations . . . not for “un” like uncola! :-) And . . . isn’t it nice to read Brigada Today on the web . . . so you don’t have to mail out for all these “get” files? Bob Mayhew fixes it so we just point, click, and read . . . and the files instantly appear like magic! Thanks Bob!!!

————————————–

GET READY FOR PTWIII WITH HINDU WORLD PRAYER FOCUS
In this 50th year of India’s independence, Christians are being called to humbly learn about, pray for and reach out to the world’s Hindu peoples. Beginning May 18 (Pentecost Sunday), Hindu ministry leaders are calling for a week of prayer focus on the Hindu peoples. For more info, news release, cover illustration, price and order information, etc., check out: http://www.ywam.org/prayer.hindu.html In addition, the 12 minute Video “Gods of India” is done, booklets will go to print any day now. And $2 Posters are done too. And by the way, those without web access can get the same info by writing YWAM’s International Communications Network at wcnatxcdotorg. Thanks Paul!!!

————————————–

PLEASE FOLLOW THE “PROTOCOL”
The welcome screen to this top level Brigada conference is going through some revision. One change is that new conference participants are being asked to email hubatxcdotorg with this message:
get brigada help-detailed
get brigada protocol

The second line (new to the welcome message) is a set of protocols to follow on Brigada conferences. Please get it when you have a chance and follow it at all times. Thanks! (This “protocol” file builds on and adds to earlier protocol files that were dated in their extensions [like protocols.960929 or whatever]. The latter will soon be erased to conserve resources.) (By the way, if you want to see the current welcome message, send a message to hub@xcorg with this line:
info brigada

————————————–

IMAGINE THIS DEAL FOR IMAGE-MAKERS
If you’re a photographer and haven’t checked out Seattle Filmworks in awhile, maybe you should give them a second look . . . especially if you’re now using digital images (for the web or for your desktop publisher). Brigada participant Chris wrote, “They have a deal where they will develop a roll of film, make a print of each image, make a slide of each image, digitize each image, print a thumbnail summary of each roll, and give you a new roll of film all for about $20. I haven’t tried them yet, but I will. Look for them at http://www.filmworks.com or call 1-800-filmworks or email at csatfilmworksdotcom. Thanks!

————————————–

SO HOW DO YOU SPELL YOUR MISSION PROJECT?
Chris Bushnell is a Personnel Coordinator for a mission agency in the midwestern USA (notice that I say it that way when I don’t want you to find out he works for Team Expansion! :-)). He wrote recently about how difficult it sometimes is for new missionaries or interns to state the full details of their project in a concise enough fashion. As a result, he’s now recommending that new workers consider using this outline . . . or anything like it . . . as a guideline:

Who:
tell about yourself, your family, your experience, your hopes and dreams.
When:
tell about your hopeful time-frame for your new work, including time spent in language and culture learning.
Where:
tell about the people and the place God has burned into your heart.
What:
tell about your mission organization and it’s distinctives.
Why:
ell about your passion to obey the Great Commission and share His love.
How:
tell your potential supporters that you need their prayers, encouragement and financial partnership to fulfill your God-given passion.

I’d say maybe he’s onto something! (By the way — please pray for Chris; he’s just learned that he’ll have to undergo knee surgery for a torn ACL. Maybe skiing and missions don’t mix after all! Better stick to golf, Chris! :-))

————————————–

WOULD YOU HELP ME WRITE THE GATEWAY PEOPLE CONSULTATION DECLARATION?
If you have an electronic copy of a past conference/consultation “declaration” that you could send my way, I’d greatly appreciate it. I’ve been asked to chair the effort to put together the declaration for the Gateway People Consultation at the US Center next week . . . and I’d love to get a look at your favorite manifesto! Just mail to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg with subject line “declaration” and I’ll greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

————————————–

GREAT SOURCE FOR PRAYER CARDS
One Brigada participant found a super supply source for those prayer cards that everybody puts on their fridge. :-) You scan your color photo, place it into a Pagemaker document and send the disk to Copy Craft Printers. They do the rest. For full color business card prayer cards, it’s reportedly under $115 for 1000 inc shipping!!!!!!! Email rollieatcopycraftdotcom for a catalogue. Sounds like a good value to me!

————————————–

NOW YOU CAN REACH YOUR AMDO TIBETAN NEIGHBORS!
Take them a copy of the cassette entitled, “God’s Powerful Savior” in the Amdo-Tibetan language with beautiful Tibetan Flute playing for bridging and background. What?! No Amdos next door? Well you can also get a brief testimony from a Tibetan believer accompanied by Tibetan music and singing. Then join the growing network of believers who are praying for an Amdo Tibetan church! :-) Order from
Audio Scripture Ministries
P. O. Box 46063
Escondido, CA 92046
Fax 619 745 8150

Or write asm-caatxcdotorg. WWW site: http://www.AudioScriptures.org/asm

TRAVEL CONFERENCE ALIVE AND WELL!
Those who had tried the brigada-travel-bids conference recently might have been discouraged by few quotes in your inbox. Apparently, there was some kind of mishap in the configuration of the conference, making it impossible for the dozens of travel agents there to see your request for a quote. Late last night that was all resolved, so they’re back on line!!! Plus (and maybe most importantly), I have secured the commitment of at least one travel agent who says he will focus his full time efforts on the conference, meaning that you will get quotes back for every request! This guy can buy wholesale fares from several sources . . . and there are over 50 other travel agents subscribed, waiting to see how they can save you and your ministry big bucks. So try it today! Just email brigada-travel-bidsatxcdotorg and explain your reqest for a bid. No need to subscribe… your message goes to the conference “as is” and they write you back directly with proposals.

PRAYER REQUEST FOR LIBYA
Thanks to Bob and CMDNet for this note on Libya… “Each year the Southern Baptists, in conjunction with other groups, focus prayer for a day on an area of the world in need of mission attention. This year (May 16-17) the focus will be the Arabs of Libya. Only a few Libyans living inside the country or abroad are known to be Christians. A resource kit to support the prayer emphasis is available from the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board. The kit consists of a video on Libya, news coverage on Libya and a prayer guide. To order, call (800) 866- 3621 or write Customer Services, Foreign Mission Board, PO Box 6767, Richmond, Virginia, VA 23230-0767, USA.”

————————————–

YOU’RE INVITED TO TEE-TIME
Chris cajelatiquestdotnet wants to know all about TEE . . . well maybe more specifically, he’d like to learn what kind of TEE programs have been successful, what accessed via the internet, video, cassette, etc., are there GED programs by video or net specifically for urban areas, . . . etc. Don’t forget to include programs designed for the USA in your answer, too! He’ll compile a list and we’ll make it available here in a couple of weeks.

————————————–

ONE MORE RESOURCE FOR CHURCH-PLANTERS!
Don’t forget that you can send mail to majordomoatgenesisdotacudotedu with only the following command in the body of your email message:
subscribe churchplanters

[Note that this is not a Brigada group. In Brigada conferences, you would never add your email address on the end of a subscribe command. It causes the subscribe command to bounce to the owner of the conference.]

They reportedly discuss everything from vision to questions, specific problems, experiences, testimonies, and practical suggestions!

————————————–

HINDU CONFERENCE COMING THIS WEEKEND AND NEXT!
Here’s a conference that looks top notch! “Christian Witness in the Hindu World,” billed as “An Exciting two-weekend seminary in Los Angeles with Dr. Roger E. Hedlund, South Asian expert and Christian Scholar. Sponsored by CenSas (the Center for South Asian Studies) will be held at

HERE’S A GREAT STORY FOR THIS WEEK’S SERMON
Need a little “closing illustration” for commitment to missions and mobilization? Here’s a real live story from an Adult Bible Fellowship in a congregation in Louisville, KY. I was helping a missions team there plan their “next steps” for reaching a Muslim group in N. Africa through one of those PACE Projects I’ve been telling you about (quick commercial — http://www.brigada.org/pace :-)). They’ve been trying all kinds of innovative approaches to make sure the church-planting effort gets promoted in the home and throughout the church. One project they have is placing collection cans for loose change and all in every home of their Couples for Christ Adult Bible Fellowship (the primary advocate group behind this project). So from what I understand, just about every family has these cans sitting around their house now! Pretty cool idea! Anyway, one of the Moms (whose real name is “Tina”) was sharing about the effect on Ryan, her 5-year-old! Apparently, he had lost a tooth that previous week and gotten a whoppin’ $5 from the tooth fairy. (I know . . . it was only a quarter when you were growing up! But hey! It’s the nineties! Inflation!) Anyway . . . Tina (the mom) was pretty shocked when Ryan walked to the Tina tried to explain to Ryan, “Now you understand that you can’t get this back?” He said, “I know, Mom. I want Jesus to have that to help people learn about God.” They say, “Out of the mouth of babes….” . . . but it seems to me Ryan is onto something. If we could just arrange our priorities to give some of our uttermost energies, our uttermost prayers, our uttermost offerings . . . to the uttermost unreached people . . . we would accomplish the uttermost results ever imagined! So . . . grab those cans and pray for your little ones to lose their teeth!!! :-)
