PRAYER JOURNEY TRAINING ON TAPE
Over 40 participants came together this past weekend for training with Shane Bennett on the why, what, and how of prayer journeys and with PACE reps. for how to do a PACE Project among an unreached people group. What great reviews the prayer journey training received, as part of Pit-Stop Louisville! AND for no extra charge (the training cost $10!), Shane included some basics on doing research during the experience too! Thank goodness David Dunlap 104165dot2242atcompuservedotcom was there to try to get the whole thing on tape! (David used to work for ABC and currently does freelancing with Jesus Film project and Good News Production.) Write him if you’d like a video copy. He’ll work something out, I hope. :-) Dave’ll give you a fair price on the cost of the tapes — and … maybe those requesting tapes can add in a $5 gift to Shane and Caleb Project. Dave’ll collect any gifts and send them on to Shane to help him keep doing traveling and training for future teams! Sound okay Dave?

————————————–

LAST CHANCE FOR “LIBRARY TO GO”
Those reference books on CD-ROM just keep on coming! This past week we received news on works by Clarke, Luther, Spurgeon, Nave, White, Bonds, Carradine, Fox, AND collections by Calvin, Finney, Moody, Owen, John Wesley, AND biographies on Bunyan, Clarke, Finney, Moody, Muller, Taylor & Wesley, AND final word on the entire Expositors Bible Commentary on CD-ROM as well! As a result, we’re taking one last week to ask for any more additions (so I don’t have to spend the next couple of weeks re-posting the file!!! :-)). But this time we’re serious — only one final week to respond! If you have a favorite CD-ROM resource that you figure some missionary could use in the field and you haven’t already submitted it, just email the title, order information, and a brief paragraph description to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg with the subject line reading:
LIBRARY TO GO

(Only items with those exact words in the subject line will be included in a new source file in the Brigada file archive beginning next week!) Don’t forget to include price and source! This will [seriously] be the last week for collection — so rattle those keyboards and get your CD titles in today!

————————————–

RESPONSES TO “HOW DO YOU FILE BRIGADA”
Seems like the best solutions are simple solutions — and your answers on how you file previous Brigada Today issues were no exception. Some “select”, copy and paste the entire issue into a big WinWord text file. Whenever they want to find a particular kind of resource, they can then do a “find” in that archive (hundreds and hundreds of pages if you were to include each issue since Feb. 18, ’95). Others make each issue into a separate text file and place them all in the same subdirectory, then use a utility to search the contents of that subdirectory for a text string. Don’t forget you can also browse http://www.brigada.org where Bob Mayhew has designed and constructed (as a labor of love, I might add — he receives no pay) a lightning search engine for previous Brigada Today issues. Alternatively, you could use one of the new “web-bot” web downloaders to download the entire Brigada Today portion of the Brigada Today web site and take it with you on your next missions weekend, in case questions come up “on the road.” Finally, don’t forget that, quietly and patiently in the background, we’ve archived each and every Brigada Today for you as an archive file on the hub. To get previous issues, first send an email to hubatxcdotorg with only the line,
filelist brigada

You’ll receive a complete list of file names for past Brigada Today issues along with other files archived throughout the past couple of years.
To retrieve any past issue, you can always use the same approach:
Get brigada brigada-today.970530

Swap out the date code at the end with the date of the issue you’re wanting to retrieve — for example…
Get brigada brigada-today.950825

That line would get you the issue which introduced the original People Group Consultant database online… You get the idea. All those files will then come to you as emails and you can archive and sort to your heart’s content. Or use hard copies to wallpaper the den! Flies won’t land on past issues of Brigada Today. Try it! :-) Guaranteed or your money back! :-)

WRITERS WANTED FOR PROPOSED FRONTIER MISSIONS ARTICLE
A writer for a major journal is seeking an article from Brigada Today with the title, THE INTERNET: TENTMAKERS’ COFFEESHOP FOR THE NINETIES. The description runs something like, “In the old days, friends used to gather at coffeeshop counters to talk about common struggles, interests, and discoveries. The practice hasn’t changed, but the venue has! The Internet is proving to be the most effective, efficient, and productive meeting grounds for the nineties.” The proposal is to look at sections on “security, potential, and the future of the Internet and tentmaking.” If you’d like to contribute a paragraph or section to the article, send your ideas/paragraphs/quote to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg with subject line,
TENTMAKING ARTICLE
and we’ll try to include something from your quote and try to credit you in the byline (unless you ask to remain anonymous). It just might be that this article could end up being the record-setting article for “most authors to any one journal article” — 5500+!!! :-) All input must be received no later than June 9. Give any personal examples of how the Internet has helped you prepare for, implement, or survive/thrive in tentmaking ministry. Talk about your fears for security on the Internet, give your favorite horror story :-) or even talk about what you see happening in the future. This will be a great experiment — and perhaps you’ll even be able to read the article in the journal in the tentmaking issue in which it will appear! So don’t delay! Send your ideas today!

————————————–

PERUSE THE PUNJAB
Here’s a new email conference ready to roar! Just send email to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the message:
subscribe brigada-peoples-punjabi

You’ll be able to receive or send out PRAYER REQUESTS and REPORTS related to ministries, among the Punjabi speaking peoples, learn of new MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES among Punjabis, NETWORK with others engaged in ministries to the Punjabis, and share MINISTRY RESOURCES you have developed or locate a ministry resource you need. Great job Joel!

————————————–

HOW TO ADVERTISE BRIGADA TODAY
One Brigada participant wrote this past week to ask us for an email “brochure” about Brigada. Yikes. I know it needs updated badly, but one could at least get the idea by sending the following line to hubatxcdotorg
info brigada

Thanks for asking! You could then use that text to relay or copy to anyone. Please do!

————————————–

GREAT PRICE ON NEW MISSIONS BOOK – FREE!
The price is right! Keith Doss keithdossatjunodotcom wrote this past week to tell us about Revolution in World Missions. He wrote, “The most important book I have read, after the Bible. The best missions mobilizing tool I know of–by far. Written by a man from India.” According to Keith, “Luis Bush, of AD2000 & Beyond Movement is excited about the above ministries plans, and that they have what it takes, and that they are living it out, and that they are penetrating the 10/40 Window. The book can be ordered through the Internet: http://www.gfa.org. I think the above comments by Luis Bush can be seen at the above address–look for the March/April, 1997 issue of their newsletter. They will ship the book to you free (limited shipping area–you might be asked to pay for shipping if you do not live in certain countries). Might be able to order from e-mail if you do not have Internet access. E-mail: infoatgfadotorg. Can’t lose on that offer folks!

————————————–

TALK TO YOUR BUDDY ON THE NET
Have you seen http://www.aol.com/buddylist/ ??? One reader (soon heading into the 10/40 Window, so wishes to remain anonymous) says AOL’s feature used to be for AOL only but now will work for anyone on the net. There are several utilities now available to do this… like http://www.ichat.com/ipage/index.html and http://pal.excite.com among several others. Problem is — your buddy has to be on at the same time. So — personally, I still prefer email. But several users are very excited about these capabilities so go have a look!

————————————–

SITE FOR MALAY EYES
Got a Malay friend? Send him/her to http://www.domini.org/spear/amalan.htm. The author told Brigada Today this past week, “…The Website in Muslimani Malay is now up on the Web. As of about ten minutes ago. The Malays are the world’s most unreached and restricted Muslim group of their size and yet have the most sophisticated Internet and computer industry in Asia. It is very simple and made up of 14 questions and answers about the beliefs and practices of Christians. … It was 26 years ago next month that I was put in prison for three months in Turkey for giving out a gospel tract. And now this.” Worth checking out.

————————————–

NEED A PRINTER? LOOK NO FURTHER
Looking for a printing and mailing resource for your newsletters and prayer letters? Consider Mission Services Association. They have done it for over 50 years. Do people actually still use snail mail? :-) Surprisingly, the answer is yes. The Exec. Director of MSA wrote this past week to Brigada Today, “That’s right, there is a whole generation of missions minded folks who ‘download’ everything from their mailbox [the one out by the road!].” :-) MSA can compose, print and mail whatever you need. With the use of their addressing and mailing software, they can get the lowest standard mailing rates for you. You can contact them by phone (800-655-8524), email Mission_Servicesatcompuservedotcom or snail mail: P.O. Box 2427, Knoxville, TN 37901. Nice people. By the way, another Brigada participant just recommended Howard’s Print Shop http://www.netusa1.net/~hpsprint/ for great prayer cards.

————————————–

DOWNLOAD AN EMAIL “BOMM” AND SEE MISSION MOBILIZATION EXPLODE
Nate Wilson has now made available the entire organized collection of all the Mission Mobilization Resources covered in the Brigada-orgs-missionmobilizers (B.O.M.M.) email conference during the years 1995 and 1996. What a great sampler platter this is! Get it by sending email to hubatxcdotorg with only the line…
get brigada bomm

Finally, here’s your chance to download a bomm for Jesus!!! :-) Send it to all your friends in the name of the Lord! :-)

————————————–

DOES PGP RAISE YOUR PROFILE? “GET” THE ANSWER
Thanks to John Hanna who undertook the Brigada survey on the question, “Does using PGP raise your profile?” Get the answer by sending email to hubatxcdotorg with only the line,
get brigada pgp-profile

PGP is a free email encryption program that allows you to “seal the envelope” on your email, so to speak, so no one along the way can read its contents. To learn about PGP, see http://www.iuc.org/NS062396.HTM (Scroll down till you see “PGP Jump Start”)

According to one reader who read John’s report, “The results of this survey indicate a flaw in the popular missions community perception (not the international business community who has been encrypting their email for many years) which states that encrypted email raises one’s profile in restricted access countries. On the contrary, we have no evidence to suggest that this is true in lands where encryption is not illegal.” Read the report for yourself and decide.

————————————–

DON’T FORGET TO CHANGE YOUR SUBSCRIPTION
…before you move… unsubscribe your Brigada-* subscriptions with your old email service please! :-) You can always subscribe your new service once you’ve got it up and running — and we hope you will! Compuserve’s alphabetical options are killers for Brigada-* conference moderators. Please unsubscribe before you register your new alpha address. Also, Brigada-* conference moderators dread name changes like the one effective June 18, when the “Foreign Mission Board” (FMB) of the Southern Baptist Convention will become the “International Mission Board” and all those former “mci” and other addresses will switch to “imb.org”. In many cases, they’ll go on to receive Brigada emails, but the first time they try a “get” or some other command from the hub, they’re powerless, because the hub “reads” their address as “imb” instead of the one under which they were originally subscribed. Bottom line: “Unsubscribe, switch, subscribe again.” Please.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM ALGERIA
In Algeria fundamentalist Moslem groups still carry out brutal attacks even on women and children. Nevertheless, the Christian church is quietly growing. According to one of the country’s Christian leaders one group has grown from 1,600 to 2,000 members since November 1996. All of the new members are from Moslem backgrounds. According to eyewitnesses, this relatively quick growth is due to a clear outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

GOT GOOD DISCIPLESHIP MATERIALS IN PORTUGUESE?
Send references to budataxdotapcdotorg. We’ll ask him to file a copy with us in a couple of weeks for all to see.

————————————–

HONEST I WAS ONLY KIDDING!
:-) One Brigada participant complained a bit about my reference to reincarnation… HOW DO BUSINESS PEOPLE BECOME VITAL PARTICIPANTS IN MISSIONS?”, where I wrote, “When I grow up, or if I’m reincarnated as a different person, I want to be George Miley. :-)” Just to clarify, I’m not Hindu nor did I originally exist as a fly. :-) And when I use the :-) it usually means, “I wish you could see the smile on my face.” :-)

WHAT A GREAT EXAMPLE OF GOOD SLEUTHING
I just saw a great example of good news-hounding from a participant in the brigada-albania-durres conference (to join, send email to hubatxcdotorg with only the line,
subscribe brigada-albania-durres ). To see the example, send email to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the email:
get brigada albania-news

We list this resource for two reasons —

1. the strife in Albania currently, of interest to many world Christians, and
2. the great example this participant is setting in gathering really super info. from the Internet!

HEAR YE, YEAR YE! GET YOUR PRAYER JOURNEY TRAINING THIS SATURDAY!
If you’ve got a prayer journey coming up this summer . . . or this October, then run — don’t walk — to Louisville, KY this Saturday to catch a full day of training from the guy who wrote the book on Exploring the Land, Caleb Project’s standard text on doing research expeditions (which include daily prayer walks). (This book served as primary source material for Life-Changing Encounters, AD2000 & Beyond’s standard training issue for JP2000 trips.) Shane Bennett learned under Steve Hawthorne, author of Prayer Walking. Then he went on to lead prayer journeys to places like India and dozens of least reached cities throughout the world. And get this — mention that you heard about it on Brigada and you’ll receive the entire day’s training (Saturday 9AM – 2:40) for $10 (plus $6 for lunch with dozens of other prayer-journeyors). Shane will help you address questions like, “Why pray there, when God can hear here?”, “Who’s qualified for a prayer journey?” and “How do I maximize the long-term effectiveness of my prayer journey?” One church with a team of 10 prayer journeyors headed to N. Africa in July is sending their entire team. Another team of 7 is headed to an Islamic area for a research expedition — and they’re coming to take the training side by side. Yet another 4-person research team is headed to a Buddhist area and they’re using the weekend as part of their team-building experience.

Plus — get this! The former head of the Zwemmer Institute (Dr. Robert Douglass, now a grad. Prof. at the Chicago Center for Urban Studies and a leader at the Central Asia Study Center) is leading a parallel track on Islam and its strategic implications for church planting in today’s world. So send half your team with Shane, and the other half with Robert!

And bring along your church missions leaders, too! They’ll want to take part in the specialized training for senders, held in yet a third track! You won’t find training at a cheaper price anywhere in the world. And I dare say you probably won’t find any higher quality either. So if you want a top notch experience, write Lisa MiddletonLataoldotcom for more info. But you’d better act fast. Saturday’s comin’ soon! (Training co-sponsored by PACE “Pit-Stops,” Caleb Project, Northeast Christian Church, Chicago Center for Urban Studies, and Team Expansion.)

————————————–

‘IT’S YOUR TURN’ FOR A STEAL OF A DEAL, LUCILLE
I brought home a copy of It’s My Turn and, no doubt about it, it’s a powerful mobilization tool for GenXers and for others too!!! It challenges individuals to evaluate their involvement in world evangelization and introduces some of Christianity’s greatest mentors, such as Hudson Taylor and Amy Carmichael. Put that together with devotional questions and a journal response page and all of a sudden, you’ve got a blockbuster success like Steve Moore’s It’s My Turn. This Steve Moore guy is the one who wrote the script for the now well known “Amdo Video” (he also led the prayer journey). Get the book through Kingdom Building Ministries by calling toll free 1-800-873-8957 (if you’re in the USA or if you downloaded the free Net2Phone product we mentioned previously), or email LaborersatKBMdotorg fax 303-745-4196, or write 14140 East Evans Avenue, Denver, CO 80014. And get this! Normal retail cost is $8.00 plus shipping, but the folks at KBM are actually avid Brigada Today readers! They said to tell you to just mention you saw It’s My Turn on Brigada and you’ll get it for $6.00, plus $3 shipping in the US, Mexico or Canada, $5 shipping elsewhere. They’ve also got a great little debriefing manual to help short-termers turn what could have been “gospel getaways” into “meaningful messages” from the Lord. I don’t know what they’ll charge . . . but maybe they’ll wrap up a packet of 5 of them for $5 or whatever. Better ask. :-) They’re great little guides… and you’ll need one per traveler. Also contains helps for preparing that slide program — You know the type, the “[Click]-Here’s-the-toilet-we had to use; [click] Here’s where we had to eat lunch. [Click]….” Won’t cut it anymore. And who should know better than the Amdo Video guy!?! :-)

————————————–

“LIBRARY TO GO” IS GOING!
We’ve been getting a great response to our request for CD-ROMs that on-site workers can take abroad (in place of barrels of books). Responses already in include dozens of works by Tozer, Calvin, Luther, Wesley, The Early Church Fathers, Adam Clarke, and many other writers. Reference works, Bibles, commentaries, inspirational, language learning helps… they’re building up one at a time. If you have a favorite CD-ROM resource that you figure some missionary could use in the field, just email the title, order information, and a brief paragraph description to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg with the subject line reading:
LIBRARY TO GO

(Only items with those exact words in the subject line will be included in a new source file in the Brigada file archive beginning next week!) Let’s put together a list of top notch CD-ROM resources for on-site workers! Don’t forget to include price and source!

————————————–

ON-SITE WORKERS WILL COME FROM PRAYER
Maybe you read the item in last week’s Brigada Today, SO WHERE WILL ALL THE ON-SITE WORKERS COME FROM? and thought, “Lucas is nuts! Why would he mention that one reader wrote in asking whether or not it was time to convince a few of the intercessors to become on-site workers? The intercessors are needed too!” One reader was brave enough to write and complain. (Except he didn’t say I was nuts. :-) ) I thanked him for speaking his mind. :-) Truth is, he’s probably right. If people are truly interceding for the least reached and if they’re truly asking God to raise up teams of evangelists and church planters to reach them, then their ministry is every bit as valuable as that of the on-site workers. Trouble is, those are the very people God ends up calling to the field anyway! :-) If you don’t believe me, just read the prayer Jesus told the disciples to pray at the end of Matt. 9, then see where it got them at the opening of chap. 10! :-)

————————————–

GLOBAL GLIMPSE OF HOPE
More than 100 people came to Christ after seeing the hardships believers in Laohutai, China, endured to erect a building. Church members cleared the site by hauling more than 100 tons of garbage down a mountain in baskets, then hand-carried building materials back up… Also, North Korea has granted permission for cooperating mission agencies to start the first independent Christian church in the country — in an area where the three organizations are providing agriculture assistance to the famine-stricken nation.

BOARDING SCHOOL BLUES TURN TO BYTES AND BITS
Hey – how ’bout that CyberHigh “boarding school via the Internet” stuff from last week ALTERNATIVE TO BOARDING SCHOOL — SEND YOUR MK TO SCHOOL ON THE NET. Those guys received over 30 immediate inquiries. What does that tell you about Moms and Dads overseas who don’t want to have to part with their kids!?! Write brettatcyberhighdotorg for more info.

BRIGADA ADMINISTRADA, PROBLEMA NADA
Vive Brigada Hoy!

COME EDUCATE THE KIDS IN K’STAN, MAN!
Been looking for a great opportunity for the Almighty in Almaty? You got it. :-) The Tien Shan School in Almaty, Kazakstan is looking for teachers for the 1997-98 school year. The leadership there is especially desperate for a teacher for grade 3/4 and for high school science. The school serves the international community of Almaty and uses English as the medium of instruction. Teachers would need to be certified and would need to raise their own support. For more information please contact SGrandiatxcdotorg.

————————————–

APOLOGIES TO TWILA PARIS
Kathy Trocoli, Twila Paris, Amy Grant, . . . they all get mixed around in my head — and my ears. Can you tell I’m not a connoisseur of contemporary Christian music? :-) Anyway… “God is in Control” is by Twila, not Kathy. Thanks to all those who filled me in! :-) (See “GOD IS IN CONTROL” from last week’s edition.)

————————————–

SO HOW DO YOU FILE “BRIGADA”?
Susan wrote in to explain her approach on saving Brigada Todays. She basically deletes the items that aren’t relevant to her and places the rest in a word processing file. What do you do? Please send your favorite indexing/saving/filing procedures to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg with the Subject: line,
FILING BRIGADA
and we’ll make the idea file available to all.

CALLING ALL INTERNATIONAL STUDENT WORKERS…
The “International Student Worker and Volunteer Training Conference” is set-up for Jul 31-Aug 2, in Columbia, SC. Cosponsored by HIS International (Columbia), InterFACE Ministries (Atlanta), First Baptist Church Atlanta and the SE Center for World Missions, the conference features speakers Robertson McQuilken, past president of Columbia Intl Univ, Lisa Chinn, author of “Think Home,” Muslim Apologist Jay Smith, John Eaves and Sam Elisha. For more information or to register, contact David Cook 102227dot2626atcompuservedotcom.

————————————–

PESKY COMPUSERVE NAMES
It’s like an Internet virus! All of a sudden, 2 million people want to change their address from 11111,9999 to and when they do, they forget to unsubscribe the 11111dot9999atcompuservedotcom first. Moments later, they can resubscribe with . But if they forget to unsub’ first, then our noble conference administrator and Brigada Customer Relations Specialist (Revis Ann Massey) has a rough day. There’s nothing like waking up to 250 bouncing addresses and half of them want you to change their old address to new! Don’t get me wrong! She’s not complaining. In fact, she’s got a wonderful servant heart. I just want us to try to help keep it that way! So before you switch to letters, please unsubscribe first! Afterward, it’ll be too late! :-)

————————————–

DO YOU DO MEDS IN THE FORMER SOVIET UNION?
A bunch of people do. Help us find them. You see, Wheaton’s Billy Graham Center has gone out and gotten this big grant from the Christian Medical and Dental Society. And with it, they’re planning a “Consultation on Christian Medical, Dental, and Health Ministries in the Former Soviet Union and East Central Europe.” (Now that’s a mouthful!) It’s coming Nov. 7-8, ’97. Participants will learn about clearing customs with med. supplies, public health, relief, dental and church-based clinic ministries; published and on-line sources of info. of use in med. and health ministries. For more info., write Mark Elliott at medicaldotconferenceatwheatondotedu. Looks like $50 would do it. This is one to watch.

HOW DO BUSINESS PEOPLE BECOME VITAL PARTICIPANTS IN MISSIONS?
One answer is when their church designs and carries out a strategic mission initiative. The 1997 Antioch Network Annual Gathering of Churches will again this year feature tracks or break out sessions focused on specific unreached peoples like the Kurds or the Turks or the Kazakhs or the Peoples of China (and others). But there will also be a track entitled “Mission Business Ventures and Church Planting Teams: The Moravians Ride Again” led by a businessman who has developed a multi-million dollar business. (There will also be a track dealing with issues concerning women on church planting teams among unreached peoples.)

There is no more strategic mission initiative than to plant churches among an unreached people, and church planting will be the theme of this year’s Gathering. Church planter par excellence Ralph Moore will be a featured speaker. Gregg Parris, senior pastor of Union Chapel in Muncie, IN, will update the group on his church’s church planting team in Central Asia. Sandy Mason, senior pastor of Grace Fellowship Church in Baltimore will share of his church’s experience partnering with a mission agency. And Bill Thrall, founding pastor of Open Door Fellowship in Phoenix, will address the issue of developing leaders who are Godly in character. The Gathering will take place August 21-24 in Phoenix. For registration materials write:

or phone 1-602-242-4414
or email 74552dot2423atcompuservedotcom. I attended the ’96 Gathering and it was great. George Miley and the entire Antioch Network crew are doing a super job with these meetings. When I grow up, or if I’m reincarnated as a different person, I want to be George Miley. :-)

WHO YA GONNA’ CALL – VOLTAGE-BUSTERS!
Suppose you want to show the Jesus Film in a local North African Dialect of Arabic that has just been completed. Where ya gonna’ buy a multi speed TV/VCR units that run under 220 AC power with the option of connecting to a car battery? I mean, those things don’t exactly pop up in your local Radio Shack, do they. And then you’re gonna’ need a projector that’s small enough to not draw attention to itself. Then … well… you need to go show the thing. But joylmartataoldotcom can do that. As long as you supply him with the leads on the suppliers. And then, Joe, can you fill us in? I mean, . . . maybe we’ll have to buy something like that someday too! :-)

STAMP OUT STAMP-OUTS
Remember those guys looking for missionary stamps? ( STAMP OUT MISSIONS from last week’s Brigada Today). Well turns out that they aren’t looking just for precious stamps but for just normal snail mail stamps from any country but the USA. They’ve dedicated themselves to using 100% of the money for missions.

WORLD’S MOST VALUABLE PIECE OF “LINGUISTIC REAL ESTATE”?
It just might be, at least according to Ken Warwick EFCM_I_Netatcompuservedotcom, of EFCM International Network. Ken says, “English is the world’s most valuable piece of linguistic real estate. A statement of cultural pride? No, just a statement of today’s global situation.” Ken believes that in almost every area of education, science, diplomacy and business, English has become the defacto universal language. “By recognizing the ever increasing demand for knowledge of the English language, missionaries and national churches have discovered a gold mine rich with mission opportunities. Want to find out how you can leverage the interest in conversational English for your ministry? Check out the Adventures in English materials the EFCM International Network has put together. With a focus on developing conversational English in a small group setting, these materials have been developed through 5 years of actual cross-cultural use by short-term teams of non-professional ESL teachers, having been written up in a 1997 monograph from the Institute for Cross-cultural Training at Wheaton College. For more information or a sample of the material visit the EFCM web site at http://www.efcm.org .” Sounds very interesting.

“ONE LIBRARY TO GO, PLEASE”
Gone are the days of shipping barrels and barrels of books to the field for your favorite missionary! I just got my copy of Sky Media’s new Bible study CD (JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT YOU’D NEVER FIND A 180-LESSON SURVEY OF THE BIBLE). What a hoot! 12 hours of audio, thousands of lesson graphics, and lots more! And guess what! No barrel! All you need is one of those little CD pouches! :-) And by the way, write dhpatrbcdotorg for more info, not as we mentioned last week. They received dozens of responses within 2 days of last week’s mailing, so they’ve now set up full email marketing! Also check out http://www.dhp.org for their web page, or just call them at 800-653-8333 if you’re in the USA (or if you’ve downloaded “Net2Phone” described earlier in Brigada Today; then you can call that toll-free number from anywhere in the world!). And if you’re into old-fashioned 1900s technology :-) write them at
Discovery House Publishers
PO Box 3566
Grand Rapids, MI 49501-3566.

Do you have other favorite CDs that you would recommend for your new missionary’s “library to go?” If so, email the title, order information, and a brief paragraph description to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg with the subject line reading:
LIBRARY TO GO
(Only items with those exact words in the subject line will be included in a new source file in the Brigada file archive. Let’s put together a list of top notch CD-ROM resources for on-site workers! Don’t forget to include price and source!

————————————–

SO WHERE WILL ALL THE ON-SITE WORKERS COME FROM?
We’re just now starting to see the mobilizers come forward. That’s good. But one reader wrote this past week to ask where the on-site workers will come from. His suggestion? Maybe consider asking a few of the intercessors to become on-site workers. That’s something akin to sending some of our national guard troops to pad the ranks of the enlisted soldiers at the front lines (something that actually happened here in the USA during the Gulf War). So intercessors… are you willing to pray about you going if God wants that too?

————————————–

NOW – A TRAINING PROGRAM FOR THOSE WHO WORK WITH INTERNATIONALS
The Association of Christians Ministering to Internationals seeks to encourage, strengthen, and network with Christians ministering to internationals temporarily residing in North America. Now you can take in their annual training conference June 6-9 at Wheaton College. For more information, contact ACMIatJUNOdotCOM.

THE ADOPTION REPORT IS IN
Months ago, “Starr” asked Brigada-Peoples participants for help with ideas for a church service where our church would formally adopt an unreached people group. Many responded. Now get the written follow-up report and share the ideas one church used for leading up to the adoption, the service itself, and ideas for follow-up within the church. To grab it, send an email to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the message:

ALTERNATIVE TO BOARDING SCHOOL – SEND YOUR MK TO SCHOOL ON THE NET
Just when you thought your kids were destined to head out to boarding school, along comes CyberHigh! Based in Edmonton, Canada, this Christian on-line school currently offers grades 7-9 and yearns to expand! Write brettatcyberhighdotorg and plug your student into the net for schooling!

STAMP OUT MISSIONS
Now I’ve heard everything. Here’s a group of retired missionaries who reportedly collect precious stamps, sell them, then give 100% of the income to support missionaries! To get started, contact Derek Porter, 1127 Ghana St., Sebring FL 33872. Apparently, stamps should be trimmed with no less than 1/8th of an inch of envelope around the stamp. The US Director of SIM can reportedly vouch for the fact that this is a legitimate program. It’s headed by Derek and Marguerite Porter, who served for more than 40 years with the Yorubas in Nigeria. Give it a whirl and let us know how it works!

NEED TO TYPE IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE?
Try Gamma Unitype. It lets you type hundreds of different languages in Windows apps. Check out the language list at http://www.gammapro.com. But then, instead of requesting it from Gamma, order it from karenatlogosdotcom if you’re outside the USA and salesatlogosdotcom if within the USA. This gives you a 57% discount! GLOBAL GLIMPSE ON THE GLOBAL MARCH
Yesterday, May 17th, marked this year’s annual Global March for Jesus. Last year on May 25th up to 12 million people from 170 nations marched in a massive series of coordinated street marches over that 24 hour period. An estimated 17,000 Christians marched in London alone, taking part in what could be the world’s biggest-ever street event. Over 100 nations had plans for praise marching or prayerwalking, with significant growth in the Americas and Asia. The African country, Chad, expected 10,000 marchers in 5 towns, followed by a seminar for young adults underlining the importance of mission among unreached peoples.

BRIGADA HOY ANYONE?
Anybody out there want to partner with us to create a Brigada Today in Spanish? This past week we received this inquiry… “Querido hermano: Con la alegria que implica encontrarnos por este medio, desearía preguntarte si existe la posibilidad de recibir Brigada en español. Dios te bendiga en tan precioso ministerio para la extension de su reino. Con aprecio en Cristo, Juan”

I guess the Spanish version would be distributed on a totally different “channel,” with a few days delay built in. Someone with a big heart for the Spanish-speaking world would need to translate the items into Spanish and perhaps add a couple of items exclusively for Latins. Commitment could be for one year at a time. An xc.org address would be required ($52/year, if the individual didn’t already have it). The salary isn’t the greatest but the benefit are out of this world! :-) Any takers?

————————————–

DON’T FORGET GLOBAL LINK
No doubt about it… I believe Global Link (NEW VIDEO PROMISES TO CHARGE UP YOUR MISSIONS PROGRAM) fills a critical niche by providing accurate information about the world in a manner appropriate for today’s youth and younger adult (ages 13-30+). It approaches the world according to two different matrix models. In one approach, you can see each major world religion, one at a time (in fact, one could break the 45-minute video up into smaller segments, if one needed to present it in smaller bites). But at the same time, this hi-tech, contemporary video presents major ideas and major blocks one at a time too. And in a much-needed global view, it also examines missions opportunities in areas like the Americas, which have lost some attention in the past few years’ mobilization toward other locations on the globe. The over all riding theme is that we have an incredible worldwide need and an incredible global opportunity… and we are the link from the Lord to the lost.

Finally, I believe viewers will find Global Link a refreshing change! Too many 45-minute missions videos have been “talking heads” and Global Link is anything but that! Filmed in the “generation X mode” (hand-held camera that doesn’t mind hand-held movement, extreme close-ups even when it cuts off part of the subject, lots of special effects (add emphasis on the word “lots” :-)) including the effect that skips frames but keeps audio in sync with the speaker’s original words, etc., etc., etc.), this film will hold the attention of just about any group.

My only fear is that, at first glance, Americans will think they’re watching a Pepsi commercial! :-) For more info., contact WorldChristian News & Books, who is marketing the video for Proclamedia – wcnatxcdotorg. A bulk discount is available for those who would like to distribute the video themselves.

NEVER A GUARANTEE FOR SHIPPING TO UKRAINE
One reader wrote to inform us that there never is a guarantee for shipping to / from Ukraine (SHIPPING TO UKRAINE). Apparently he was not having a good experience with LVIV Express Services, Inc. So… like anything in life… let the buyer beware. :-)

————————————–

OKAY – SO I WAS OFF A BIT
:-) At least one buyer (from Czech Republic) found music prices in “For Missionaries Only” slightly higher than that quoted in COOL TOOLS two weeks ago. But still… cassettes at $4.75 and CD’s at about $8.75 are still good deals. I guess if anyone is going to check up on our info. and send in corrections, it should be a reader from the official Czech Republic. :-)

————————————–

GET READY FOR “CITY-TALK”
“CityTalk:the language of urban ministry” http://www.simeon.org/citytalk.html will be the focus of the Simeon Institute’s project roundtable at Westminster College, Cambridge, England, August 10-15, 1997. Michael Mata will be the key resource person for a team producing a glossary of urban ministry terms. To join the on-line conference send

CAN’T PUT YOUR FINGERS ON KURDISH-BAHDINI SCRIPTURE CASSETTES?
Look no farther. asm-caatxcdotorg can send you Matthew, John, or Acts for $7.50 each (2 cassette sets). And mention Brigada and they’ll arrange a healthy discount for bulk orders. :-) If you’re into using up the Amazon rain forest, send paper mail to
Audio Scripture Ministries
PO Box 460634.
Escondido CA 92046-0634

or — if you like to talk — call (760) 745-8105. You can also fax them at (760) 745-8150. Nice labels. Nice insert cards, too. You can even get Luke in Kurdish-Sorani, if you please. The story of how this recording came to completion is quite a tale of God being in control (see below for another example). How was Harvey Hoekstra to know that Bob Blinco and his family would move into the “house next door” — and the project was born. Way to go, guys!!! Way to go God!

————————————–

“GOD IS IN CONTROL”
Who sings that song, anyway? You know. The one making the contemporary Christian music circuits? Kathy Tracoli? Anyway, whoever it is that’s singing, He [God] really is. She [the singer] was right. I should have listened to her all along. Last Friday, my wife, Penny, (have I told you how much I love my wife. Penny?) headed to Louisville for a Mother-Daughter Banquet at her home church. Around mid-day, I received a call from a friend up in Indiana who had gotten hold of 3 Promise-Keeper tickets (valued at $60 each!) and basically, he wanted to see them put to good use! We arranged to meet him at the stadium that night. The boys were excited to try out Promise-Keepers for the first time! (I would probably never have been able to afford to take them under normal circumstances — and I figured that if I ditched my annual “watch-the-kids-during-the-banquet” thing, I wouldn’t have been a very good husband/dad anyway. :-))

But when we arrived at the stadium, the friend from Indiana didn’t show — delayed in traffic, we presumed. After waiting nearly an hour with some pretty disappointed boys, we asked a fellow selling “leftover” tickets out on the plaza, “So… I’m sure we couldn’t ever afford tickets, . . . but how much are they?” “$20,” came the response. Yikes. $60 still seemed pretty much out of reach. We thanked the gentleman, then turned to keep brainstorming. As we did, he called us back and said he hated to see us wander around like that. It was starting to sprinkle, and I think he felt sorry for the boys. (45,000 men were trying to crowd through that plaza!) He took three tickets out of his bag and said, “Here, take these.”

I couldn’t believe it. I asked him where to send a ‘thank you’ and he told me not to worry about it, but proceeded to ask where we were from. We told him about working with a mission organization called Team Expansion and he replied, “Well then — you would know our church — the Northeast Christian Church of Louisville!” Team Expansion opened up a PACE Project in Albania last year — and Ron, the church’s Administrator, had been the one to show us the kindness! Out of 45,000 men, God had matched us up with a representative from a partner church we hadn’t met yet! It was the first time we had met… but he knew all about his church’s project, of course.

Later that chilly evening, as the boys and I huddled under a sleeping bag in Cynergy Stadium, listening to a speaker from India, Christopher leaned over and said, “Dad, this really is great. Thanks for bringing us.” I replied, “God wanted us here, boys!” Caleb said later, “God just thinks in His head, and it happens!” Amen. Join us as we give thanks to God for the way He watches over each of our families, working out our futures while we step through the present!

WRITE NOW – RIGHT NOW – FOR INFO. ON PIT-STOP LOUISVILLE
If you want to take home a diskette chalked full of info. on how to adopt an unreached people group, and you’re wanting a simple step-by-step approach to promote the project in your congregation, come to Pit-Stop Louisville, May 30-31, and learn all about PACE — the simple, effective approach to pulling off a church/agency partnership for unreached peoples! For a free brochure, write Bill Reynolds at: 76152dot2375atcompuservedotcom or see http://www.brigada.org/pace and keep checking back as more sites are added later this year for Minnesota, North Carolina, and Tulsa.

————————————–

WANT THE NAME AND ADDRESS OF OTHERS WHO HAVE ADOPTED ‘YOUR PEOPLE GROUP’
So do zillions of other folks. Let’s start praying that we’ll all figure out a way to make that happen. For example, John Rogers BCCYanadiatxcdotorg wrote this past week to ask for a list of other congregations and individuals (worldwide, presumably) that had adopted the Yanadi. Okay — so do we go to Adopt-a-people Clearinghouse, or AD2000, or the Manna Church of Fayetteville, NC? Search me. After two years of campaigning, the best answer I’ve been able to find it to write brigada-peoplesatxcdotorg (you might have to join first by sending a message to hubatxcdotorg with
subscribe brigada-peoples
in the text) and asking for leads. Once you find even one contact person, you’re likely to stumble onto dozens of others in the same network. Real scientific, eh? :-) However, one of the rubs is security. Nobody wants to expose on-field workers to risk. Fine. So let’s don’t. Now what else is holding us up? Well, there’s also the ticklish situation of people getting a barrage of “please send money for such-and-such” appeals. I mentioned this to a buddy in Colorado two weeks ago and his answer was, “I don’t buy it. People can always just say no. You know what I say when people ask me for money and I can’t give? I say, “No.” So I don’t buy it.” (Way to go Steve Moore! :-) ) So what else is holding up a true clearinghouse of mobilizers for the same people group? I’m not sure. It’s surely not technology. Goodness knows we have plenty of that floating around a group of 5500 Internet types and missionaries. And certainly it’s not passion. My goodness no. So…. my only conclusion is that everybody’s business becomes nobody’s business. We’ve talked and planned and prayed and brainstormed and plotted and … where are we today??? Only a hair farther along than we were in January ’95 when we first asked the very same question!!! So… I’m recommending we shut down the whole Brigada family of networks. It’ll save me a ton of time and probably you too! :-) What’s that? You’ll miss the great humor? Yeah right. :-) Don’t get me wrong. I’m happy for the friendships and all that stuff. :-) But in the end, how do we form networks? Here’s my suggestion. (Okay — so I was kidding about shutting down Brigada. :-) ) Let’s make a commitment now to have this whole thing finalized by the time we do BriagdaFest ’98, Dec. 26-31, ’98. By then, with just two years left in the whole AD2000 & Beyond push “a church for every people by Dec. 31, 2000,” we’d better have a way to actually measure whether or not that’s happening! :-) So — for now, best bet I know of is to contact AD2000 & Beyond Lauriatad2000dotorg or call (719) 576-2000 and ask them. If you can prove who you are (so you’re not a security risk) they’re likely to give you some kind of lead. And thanks to AD2000 & Beyond for filling this incredibly helpful role for now. Yikes. What would we have done without you!!!

————————————–

YOUR SOURCE FOR INTRO. INFO. ON PGP ENCRYPTION
Now Brigada participants have a totem pole to file FAQS (and their answers, we trust) about PGP encryption. Just send a note to hubatxcdotorg with only these words in the text:
get brigada pgp-help

You’ll soon receive an emailed reply with pointers to web pages and generally helpful pgp shell applications, tips, and tricks, as well as cautions about false senses of security. If you get the file and want to improve on it, send your suggestions/contributions to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg with subject line
PGP HELP

— note that messages which do not include this phrase in the subject line will not be added to the file. (I’m awash in email and I’ve got to work smart. :-) This method automates the process.)

————————————–

LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT MOTHER’S DAY GIFT? HOW ‘BOUT A MAP?
:-) Well, maybe it’s too late to actually get the map by lunch today, but you could get her a card and tell her what you’re ordering for her! “To my darling mother: I’ve ordered a map from the US Center for World Mission, from my good friend Gerry gerrydotdueckatwciudotedu there. This is the now world-famous map of the least reached peoples around the world, beautiful full color… and might I add that by waiting ’til this Mother’s Day (and not buying last year), I was able to get this map for just $1.95 each (in quantities of 3 or more)! So I’ve ordered you 3 of them, one for your kitchen, your car, and the basement laundry room, so you can study unreached peoples while you fold clothes for me!!!!” By the way, if your mother is from the city, maybe you’d like the also pick up an extra map of the 100 Gateway Cities, from the 1995 prayer thrust??? Well Gerry’s ready for you there, too! $3.95 in quantities of 3 or more! So contact Gerry for all the details… and … good luck with your Mother’s Day shopping! :-)

Oh! Almost forgot, if you’ve got a really BIG mother, maybe you’ll want to order the really big map from IMB Customer Services, 1-800-866-3621 in the USA or CustomerdotServicesatIMBdotOrg from wherever, . . . 36″x64″ for $4.95!!! Now there’s a steal of a deal for a really large mama… [or for the vestibule of you church, too!]. They’ve also got the 24″x36″ size for $2.95, in a mailer tube or folded, postage paid to USA addresses (please specify which version you’d like). As for those outside the USA, well… do other countries celebrate Mother’s Day? Maybe you can order a map for yourself??? :-)

————————————–

MISSED MOTHER’S DAY? WHY NOT PLAN FOR A MAP FOR FATHER’S DAY!
To help mobilize prayer for the least evangelized peoples of the world, and in cooperation with the Praying Through the Window Committee, GMI has designed a special “Praying Through the Window III” map. Now they’re offering a pre-publication discount bulk rate for quantities of 100 or more maps. But they need to know by May 23rd how many to print for you. Three designs will be available: Personal: 8 1/2″ x 11″ Place-Mat: 11″ x 17″ Poster: 22″ x 34.” I get it. In preparation for your missions banquet this fall, you could set up the table with the place-mat size, use the poster size to promote the banquet, then give each attendee a personal size! Now there’s a father’s day gift that would make Mark Patterson (from Global Mapping) happy! :-) So… order now… for your banquet, . . . or for your 100 fathers! Write PTTWatgmidotorg and don’t delay… your Dad might never forgive you!

PLAN NOW TO ATTEND MISSION 2000 III
We’ll have to work extra hard not to confuse Mission 2000 III with Mission 2003! :-) Because Mission 2000 III is this fall, September 4 – 7 1997 in Bispingen, Germany. This conference is all about practical ways to fulfill the Great Commission in our generation, about the initiatives “adopt an unreached people group” and “Praying Through the Window III.” Great speaker lineup… John Robb, George Otis jr., Betsy Neuenschwander, Bill and Amy Stearns, Jan Schlegel, and Kerstin Hack. Contact 100330dot2724atCompuservedotcom or 100711dot2622atCompuservedotcom for more details.

ARE YOU GETTING ‘ALERTS’ ABOUT CRYPTO LAW HR695?
That’s a bill before the US House of Representatives that would change the way we think about encryption technology. If you’d like more info, see http://www.crpto.com/safe_bill/ or http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c105:H.R.695:. If you’re a USA citizen, you can also “adopt” your legislator at http://www.crypto.com/adopt/. Now there’s an oxymoron — “adopt your legislator!.” :-) Thanks to those who have emailed alerts . . . and to Jonathan for interpreting the possible scenarios. Basically, it’s an attempt to deal with the use of crypto in drug trafficking etc, but it might backfire. See http://www.crypto.com/safe_bill/safe_letter.shtml for one interpretation. And by the way, if you’re interested in seeing a summary of international encryption law, check out http://cwis.kub.nl/~frw/people/koops/lawsurvy.htm (Thanks Rod!).

DO YOU USE CIS/COMPUSERVE?
Then check out Email Assist for CSi3 version 2.11, available from RhinoBytes, either on the WINUTILA forum on CompuServe or at http://www.rhinobytes.com. DavidHousholderatxcdotorg says the new version works great! Spell check on the fly, strip out Internet headers (or rather, hide them), use WinWord-like “autotext” substitution, and more.

NEW VIDEO PROMISES TO CHARGE UP YOUR MISSIONS PROGRAM
Procla-Media (part of the YWAM International Communications team in Colorado Springs) team has done it again! This time they have produced an MTV-style, high-tech and fast-paced video adventure journey into the world of modern missions. Who says missions is boring?! “Global Link” is the name of this 45 minute video; it can be watched in sections. After seeing it, your missions rally won’t think of missions as boring!! :-) Retail price is U.S. $14.95, but by mentioning this note in Brigada, you can get it from them for $11.95 plus postage (they can invoice you, and they also accept visa and MasterCard). Order it by sending an email to wcnatxcdotorg but don’t send your credit card number through unencrypted email. Either get their fax, or ask them to begin accepting PGP-encrypted messages. Also, if you have not yet gotten info about the Hindu World Prayer Focus starting on Pentecost Sunday, you can ask Paul at wcnatxcdotorg, or check out http://www.ywam.org/prayer/hindu.html.

FIND FABULOUS FAITH-PROMISES FOR FURTHERING FAR FLUNG FOCUSES
Now you can find out what other Faith-Promise programs are doing worldwide. Write a short two-paragraph synopsis of your church’s faith-promise experience and send it to Kevin Paszalek pkpatmindspringdotcom. In a couple of weeks, he’ll knit together a compilation and make it available to us here on Brigada!

BANDWIDTH BUSTER OF THE WEEK: ABORTION POLL
It’s gotta be this week’s major story in “forwarded messages.” The li site was probably among the Internet’s most misunderstood homepages this past week. The messages that everyone is forwarding to the whole world mislead us into thinking that the page is somehow sponsored by President Clinton, as if to get our input. (Ha! If Clinton wanted our input, he’d ask us on a page like whitehouse.com or something, not abortion.com.) In reality, the author of this abortion.com page is sending the results to Clinton, but does not purport to represent Clinton. As to whether or not Clinton will even see the poll, I doubt it. First of all, the page isn’t a true poll. I sat there and voted for the “pro-life” side of things about five times in a row, using my “back” and “forward” button to get a new start on the page. Now be honest. … didn’t you do that too??? A more interesting or helpful survey might have at least required us to submit our email address and street address, so we couldn’t be counted more than once. So… the page is an interesting idea… but in my opinion, poorly implemented and pointless. It only goes to prove how much bandwidth we wasted trying to prove that our side was the best! Still, if you want to look at it for the fun of it, it’s an interesting contest now — who can waste the most Internet bandwidth to show that their side is the most popular! As we went to press with Brigada Today this morning, the score was 5377 to 511, with pro-lifers ten-folding the pro-choicers. Course, my five votes helped make that possible. :-)

BRIGADA-TRAVEL-BIDS A MIXED BAG
We still get messages from those who have tried Brigada-travel-bids and used it effectively to save money. Just email your travel request to brigada-travel-bidsatxcdotorg (no need to join this one; only travel agents need apply) and odds are, you’ll receive a quote or two… or several! In fact, if you don’t receive any mail, you’re entitled to a complete refund!! Everything you had to pay to try the system will be refunded back to you! . . . zero! :-) But the 55 member travel agents who are trying to answer the requests ask that you please make sure to include “where you are traveling from, where you are going to, what date you will depart, what date you will return, and how many people will be traveling.” That’ll help them streamline their responses — and they’re getting daily requests for quotes on the system… so please be courteous. Lots of people are using it… and only one travel agent “gets the bid,” so it must be frustrating for some of them (if they lose everytime! :-) ). Course, the ones that do get the bid are the ones with the lowest price . . . and if that’s what you’re after, then try it! You might like it! :-)

PERFECT IMAGE HAD IMPERFECT URL
Third time’s charm for Linda O’Flynn’s Perfect Image PC Service. She has twice supplied us with URL’s which were apparently incorrect. This time I went and checked before giving you http://www.inworks.net/perfectimage and at least, for now, it’s the right one! :-) So… if you’ve been banking on finding her on the web, maybe now you can? Sorry for the inconvenience. Someone said, “Let’s hope her scans are better than her URLs!” :-) Ouch! :-(

SHIPPING TO UKRAINE???
Our sources say to try “LVIV Express Services, Inc,” an organization which offers person to person shipping to Ukraine for 99 cents per pound – taking only 6-9 weeks. This applies for humanitarian aide items (duty free) and other items that are to be used for the purpose of humanitarian aide. In the USA (or via the new Net2Phone service mentioned last week in Brigada Today! :-) ), call 1-800-965-7262 or check them out at http://www.imall.com/stores/lviv. They also hand deliver American currency in a most confidential way. Thanks to Paul, Andy and Chris for this great tip!

1. provide information and understanding about Muslim religion and culture,
2. help a student share their faith with honesty and integrity, an important aspect of living in a multi-cultural world.

For information, contact gmiatluthersemdotedu by e-mail or tel (612) 641-3487 or visit http://www.luthersem.edu/highlights/islammay97.htm.
[I love this guy because when he sent this paragraph, he already had all the little “<" braces around the email address and the URL! Thanks Mark! -------------------------------------- TRAINING PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCED
If you’re interested in learning more about a new “Partnership for Missions Training” put together at a planning conference this past Apr. 21-22, call (704)-287-8996, ext. 231 or write to 71035dot704atcompuservedotcom. Twenty-five leaders representing fifteen mission agencies, churches, and training institutions came together to explore opportunities for uniting efforts to better prepare cross-cultural missionaries. Sounds exciting! We’ll look forward to hearing more from them!
