WEBWATCH
Still trying to track down that web page giving the USA’s policy on support of religious freedom? :-) Sorry the page we provided in last week’s WEBWATCH didn’t deliver. Try this one instead: http://www.state.gov/www/global/human_rights/970722_shattuck_christians.html. (Sorry for any inconvenience!) Thanks for the rescue, Marc. Also, one tipster suggested we direct people to http://www.musictus.com/gratis/ , which is apparently a grab-bag of free stuff. Finally, one reader suggested we look at http://www.kerk.net/cmi/ , a good example of a Netherlands-based mission organization trying to minister to the needs of prisoners in the former Soviet Union.

PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW III COMMITTEE REPORT
Just received a new update from the Christian Information Network (July 1997 report):

UNREACHED PEOPLE GROUPS: Luis Bush, International Director of AD2000 & Beyond reports that of the 1,739 unreached people groups identified 1995, ONLY 579 groups remain without an established indigenous church. Many groups were adopted at GCOWE and the new number will be announced in the near future.

PEOPLE PROFILES: Bethany World Prayer Center averages a translation of 30-35 unreached people groups weekly. Efforts are being made to have the group’s information translated into Spanish as well, for all Latin countries.

RADIO: PTTWIII committee members are pursuing radio as a medium to make more people aware of the “unreached people groups” of the 10/40 Window, and that these groups are being assigned for prayer and adoption through Christian Information Network. They are also approaching Christian recording artists to get behind the project for a “big push” as Fall 1997 approaches. Global Harvest did a large distribution to Spanish radio stations of the Praying Through The Window III book translated into Spanish.

CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT: Praying Through The Window III materials were made available to the GCOWE leadership in S. Africa to draw students worldwide into the 10/40 Window project, as they are being prepared for the next millennium. Approximately 300 students and deans heard the report. Christian Information Network mailed a letter to students of 400 English speaking seminaries and Bible Colleges in other countries. HAUNTED BY THE MEANING OF CAVEAT EMPTOR?
Remember that item a couple of weeks ago, “NO FREE LUNCH IN CHICAGO”??? We parenthetically asked “what in the world does ‘caveat emptor’ mean anyway!?” Well Chris Istrati wrote, “‘Caveat emptor'” means ‘Buyer beware’ as in ‘Cave canem’ – ‘beware the dog’ – a sign that was found in the ruins of Pompeii. ‘Emptor’ probably has the same root as ’emporium’ – or maybe ’empty’ because the shops cleaned you out. :-) ” Thanks Chris! Revis Ann Massey, our Customer Relations Manager, quipped, “How does he remember these things!” Turns out he studied Latin under the same Latin teacher that taught John F. Kennedy! I can just hear her/him now… “Ask not what Latin can do for you but what you can do for Latin!” No wonder he became president (JFK, not Chris!) :-) So now you’re all going to rush out to Rover’s house and put up a “Cave Canem” sign, right? :-)

————————————–

DON’T FORGET YOU CAN STILL GET THE LIBRARY-TO-GO!
You can still “get” the collection of great CD reference “books” for cross-cultural church planters and those who love them — just send email to hubatxcdotorg with only the words,
get brigada library-to-go

in the text of the message (minus the quotes). There are dozens of options. If you want to add a resource to the file, or suggest a change, write DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg with the words,
LIBRARY TO GO

in you subject line, please. We regret that we can only process changes sent in this fashion.

————————————–

FREE FOR LIFE EMAIL ADDRESS (VIA A FORWARDING SERVICE)
It’s not that often you can get something for nothing, . . . but thanks to a Brigada tipster (thanks Faithe!), we learned this past week about http://www.yahoo.iname.com/, where you can get a free-for-life email address like . So from now on, regardless of which internet service provider you use, you’ll be able to redirect your email to the new address. This service would also be great for missionaries who switch to a local service provider while in the field, then change back to something like AOL or CSI during home service. Just publish your new “iname.com” address and you’ll never have to send out one of those “I’m-writing-to-inform-you-of-my-change-of-address” notes again! I went and tried it just for fun and, sure enough, it works great! You can now write me at DougLucasatinamedotcom. :-) (By the way, you can get this same service from MAFxc for $52/year, but with it, you’ll also gain some other nifty features, like email conferences and file archival.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM GUATEMALA
Remember Lori and Eugene Nij, missionaries in San Raymundo, Guatemala? Eugene “Queno” was released from prison Tuesday, July 29th. Although he’d lost count of the converts in the prison (he’d run out of chalk to mark with) it turns out that the Prosecuting Attorney had sent men inside the prison to catch Queno doing anything wrong. Instead, they too were transformed by this man “who thought of himself last on every occasion.” However, these men kept record of the 260 conversions. Today is a day of joy for Queno’s family, those nearby, and all those around the world who petitioned and prayed on behalf of this family.
(Source: The Quino web page: http://www.zianet.com/dean/page2.html )

Here’s the original Global Glimpse describing the initial situation: “Lori and Eugene Nij have served as missionaries in San Raymundo, Guatemala for over a decade. Over that time with the help of the New Iberian Mission Association they have built an orphanage, a Free School and a number of churches despite governmental opposition. In spite of over 300 witnesses, including police officers, Eugene was arrested and put in with general prison population. Undaunted, Eugene has been preaching and evangelizing at every opportunity. Tonight this small Mayan preacher, in love with his people, is lying on a concrete floor, giving praise to his God that he was chosen for this ministry, praying that he can reach “one more” before his time is up.”
(Global Glimpse is compiled each week by John Hanna, Caleb Project, Littleton, CO.)

————————————–

ALMA READY TO PREPARE FOR REACHING OTHERS’ SOULS
In Paraguay, “The Heart of South America”, the Lord is raising up a new ministry, called ALMA, to help fulfill the desire of His heart, the saving of souls around the World. [“Alma” means “soul” in Spanish.] ALMA’s strategy is to work in partnership with Latin American evangelical churches in order to prepare Latin Americans to serve effectively as cross cultural missionaries. According to Dan and Arlene Cool, who work with the ministry, “A beautiful campus is nearly completed and ALMA is now looking for staff to begin the program.” Specifically they are seeking: an Academic Dean, a Bible/Missions Instructor, a Language Instructor, a Computer/Resources Instructor, a Work Program Director, a Dietitian, as well as adjunct faculty. For more information about ALMA and or these positions please e-mail: richgwinatdatanetdotcomdotpy.

LATEST URBAN LEGEND: “JOIN THE CREW”
There’s yet another myth making the rounds . . . “Join the Crew.” There’s no such virus… so if you get a warning message about a virus by that name, just ignore it!

————————————–

SINGLE SURVEY
If you are a single woman missionary (currently serving on the field or trying to raise support to go) or are with a church that currently supports single women in missions, someone wants to know (and it’s not just a bunch of single guy missionaries! :-)). Revis Ann Massey writes, “We are researching areas of support for single women involved in missions and need you to fill out a short survey.” Please contact Revis Ann Massey at: RevisAnnMasseyatxcdotorg as soon as possible. We need to complete the research by September ’97. Thanks!

SOMEBODY’S PRAYING!
In fact, more than 10 cell groups or churches are praying — for each of the groups on the Joshua Project List of Unreached Peoples! What started as a dream has now become reality! Dick Gaffney RGaff13817ataoldotcom The Manna Church of Fayetteville, NC, has now documented 10 churches for each of the 1790 people groups on the list and now they’re going around again in an effort to record 20 different churches or groups praying for each of the peoples! They’re already up to 19,300!!! Way to go, Manna! I’m finally going to meet these people at Pit-Stop Raleigh (a conference on how to adopt and reach a frontier people group), Sept. 19-20, Raleigh, NC) and I’m looking forward to it! (For more information about Pit-Stop Raleigh, write psraleighataoldotco. If you were looking for a good excuse to go, now you’ve got one! Dick Gaffney from Manna Church is going to be there with a live session, along with Eric Derry of Beavercreek Christian Church, and others!!)

SHORT-LIVED GRAPHIC SLITHERS INTO THE PAST
So, someday years from now, those four Brigada Today issues with the graphic logo will have become, I’m sure, collectors’ items. You’ll be able to recount to your grandkids, “I remember when Brigada Today tried that logo in ’97 — you remember, the one that would never format correctly ’til you switched the font to Courier New!” :-) Sorry for the four-week experiment. We’ve learned that we don’t live in a Courier New world any longer! It’s history. :-) Thanks to those who spoke out on the survey, asking for its release into posterity.

HOW DO YOU SPELL RELIEF… IN GETTING VISAS
Dennis Shelly DennisShellyatmafdotorg is perplexed. He’s trying to figure out how to talk the Nigerian government into giving his organization, the Christian Witness Team, Inc., a fair visa quota for entry into Nigeria. Dennis writes, “Over the past months our CWT leaders have spent much time and money by making many trips to Abuja to solve this matter, but no approval has been given yet. We believe the real reason relates to Muslim leaders not wanting Christian missionaries to come into the country. We will not give them a bribe.” Have you faced similar situations — in Nigeria or other countries? If so, how in the world did you resolve it? Dennis is looking for feedback — and Dennis, if you get some input, please knit together a compilation for us to make available here on Brigada, okay? Thanks . . . and Godspeed.

NO FREE LUNCH IN CHICAGO
One of those (Jonathan Marsden) evaluating the “free internet access” (“freeaccess.net”) in Chicago pointed out that they could go “belly up” at any time. Since by then they will have grabbed your thirty bucks sign-up fee, maybe there’s no free lunch. :-( And as Jonathan put it, the web page says it will be “operational after Apr. 21st — and it’s still not operational. Not a good sign.” Still, if you’d like to take the risk, send email to infoatfreeaccessdotnet. Caveat emptor… [Just what exactly does that mean, anyway? Mrs. Judd (my 9th grade Latin teacher), where are you when I need you! :-) ]

NAME THAT TUNE
Give Grace your best shot. Grace is compiling an ongoing list of resources and networks of Christian music and the arts throughout the nations so that the nations can worship Jesus with their own expressions of worship to His glory. If you’ve got a favorite resource or CD or whatever, email Gewiebeataoldotcom or GracedotWiebeatCCMAIldotLFAdotCOM or both, for that matter :-) In a couple of weeks, Grace, don’t forget to send us the compilation so we can make it available to all. Thanks!

IF YOU HAD TROUBLE GETTING PGP INTERNATIONALLY …
Try again. This site makes available the free version of PGP internationally. I just verified the following page and it’s there: ftp.ox.ac.uk:/pub/crypto/pgp/pc/windows95. MAC users can look at ftp://ftp.ox.ac.uk:/pub/crypto/pgp/mac/. This will appear as a file list.. not extremely informative. Other pages can fill users in regarding PGP and its uses. By the way, I’m beginning to figure out that this particular copy of PGP has apparently been exported without permission and perhaps just a bit illegally. One source told us that it wouldn’t be the least bit illegal for you to use this version, but it would have been unethical for you to be the one who exported it. A fully legitimate version is being prepared for use at another overseas location and should be available within the next month.

————————————–

NEW STUDY BIBLE FOCUSES ON “KNOWING JESUS AND MAKING HIM KNOWN”
According to Paul Filidis, “Knowing God & Making Him Known” is the theme of a new NIV study Bible, available at http://www.ywam.org/books/books.html. Paul says this Bible’s study program is modeled after YWAM’s proven Discipleship Training approach. It reportedly features a 30-path study program with in-text notes, mini biographies, unreached people profiles, a center-column cross ref. system, book intros, concordance, index and more. It’s brand new — July ’97 release date from Zondervan. So if you were already planning on purchasing a gift for someone, why not make it a study Bible — $25 for the soft cover edition. Contact Paul at wcnatxcdotorg or fax (719)380-0936.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE AT A GLOBAL CONSULTATION
The first week of July brought the world one step closer to global evangelization. The 1997 Global Consultation on World Evangelization (GCOWE) brought together 4200 Delegates from 135 countries to Pretoria, South Africa. 80% of the delegates were from countries that WERE missionary receiving countries — the missionary leadership base is now firmly established in Africa, Asia and Latin America! When the results were tallied, 390 ethnic groups previously with no church or church planters now had missionary agency leaders who had adopted them. It was reported on the last night that now 90% of the 1,739 Joshua Project unreached peoples now have either a church planting movement or a commitment to mobilize a team of church planters.
(Source: AD2000 web site, http://www.ad2000.org )
Global Glimpse is compiled each week by John Hanna, Caleb Project, Littleton, CO.

————————————–

WEB WATCH
Now that GCOWE ’97 is written into the history books, you might want to take a look at what some of those majority world churches are saying. Check out http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Delphi/5796 for one example, fresh from Gereja Persekutuan Maranatha Indonesia, Yogyakarta. And thanks to Arie “Denmas Marto” Saptaji ypkd-indatyogyadotwasantaradotnetdotid for the tip about your church’s website!

————————————–

NEW INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER TAPS INTO GLOBAL MARKET
Terry Ware terrydotwareatusadotnet likes http://www.homegate.net as an Internet Service Provider (ISP), because they deliver 1,000+ Points Of Presence (POPs) in 155 countries. With all those pops, this new service might just explode in popularity… if they don’t snap or crackle first! :-) (Note that they aren’t delivering a “flat rate” suicide plan a la AOL!) Terry and Alice serve in Croatia and need international connectivity. I have a hunch that several other _Brigada Today_ participants do as well! :-) Check ’em out, especially if you average more than 30 minutes per month on email outside North America! Thanks Terry!

————————————–

SERVANT-WATCH
How does one learn humility? We all need it… everybody admires it… but where do you get it? Well I’m beginning to realize that some of this stuff is better caught than taught. I saw it in action this past weekend at the work day we were hosting at Team Expansion’s new location in Louisville, KY. Some volunteers from a local church had gathered to help us get started on the big job of cleaning, scraping, painting, and remodeling the old church building we’ve purchased on the outskirts of Louisville, KY, to use as a mission headquarters here in the USA. Picture some of our volunteers. Here was one of Louisville’s top anesthesiologists [he says his job is to go from room to room all day putting people to sleep; sounds like some of my preaching! :-) ] wiping out cabinets beside one of Kentucky’s foremost heart surgeons — and the cardiologist happened to be on call. Several times I would see them there on their knees scrubbing cabinets, cell phone in one hand, sponge soaked in Formula 409 in the other, taking calls from forwarding services and emergency rooms. “No, I don’t think I’d administer that together… better use 10 cc Lydocaine drip with….” (You get the picture — in spite of my improvisational prescriptions. :-)) This is the stuff humility is made of. There we were on a hot and sweaty Saturday morning, when many doctors would want to be out on water skis, watching ESPN, or shopping for some new car… anywhere but a musty kitchen cabinet of a 100-year-old church building. But hey — the building has tons of character, and so do these volunteers. So — missions department and volunteers at Southeast Christian Church, we salute you… but on a larger scale, we salute the doctors, missionaries, and volunteers worldwide who are “wiping down cabinets” (and performing tons of other servant-like tasks) worldwide today. You might not all be talking on cell phones while you scrub on sinks, but for whatever it is God has called you to do with Christlike servanthood, you’ve all got my thanks and the appreciation of zillions of folks from Louisville to Liberia, all saying, ‘thanks!’ for your attitude of service, humility, and Christlike life!!! And by the way, the cardiologist and his wife are due back tonight with the wife of the anesthesiologist — and dozens of others. The work marches forward around the world, thanks to humble hearts.

LATIN AMERICANS SAY “SI” TO WORLD EVANGELIZATION
From December 27-30, Panama City, Panama was host to Christian leaders and university students for LatinoAmerica 2000, a conference on world evangelization sponsored jointly by AD2000 and Beyond Movement and Campus Crusade for Christ. Over 3600 people from nearly every country in Latin America heard the challenge to take a vital role in world evangelization from well-known speakers like Bill Bright, Josh McDowell, Luis Bush, and Loren Cunningham. In the end, all delegates stood and then knelt to consecrate themselves to go and do whatever God might ask to bring “a church for every people and the gospel to every person by the year 2000.”

Is this goal possible? “According to your faith be it unto you,” challenged Dr. Bright.

Latin America has 60 million evangelical Christians, with thousands of seminaries and megachurches. Many speakers emphasized their gifts of passion, of creativity, of cultural diversity, and of faces which can pass as Middle Eastern, assets which bring strong enabling for cross cultural witness. Speaker Peter Wagner noted the spiritual maturity of Latin American intercessors able to support the work of missions.

Three hundred delegates put feet to their commitment right away, and agreed to stay on in Panama for three weeks in order to take the Jesus Film to every area of the country.

(Thanks to Debbie Wood, of the AD2000 & Beyond International Office staff, for submitting this summary and her daily updates to Brigada!)

AN APPEAL FOR SECURITY PROTOCOLS
Do you have a one-page summary on security protocols for your organization, church, or project? I’m talking about ideas like, “Don’t ever use the ‘M’ word in email to us. Instead, call us ‘on-site workers’ or anything else. Avoid asking questions like….” Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. Send your security recommendations to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg with subject, “PROTOCOL” and we’ll assemble a copy for all Brigada readers. Thanks to Bev (a Project Coordinator for an adopt-a-people project) for the request!!! (Bev, we’ll make sure you get a copy!)

————————————–

“LOOK OUT! THE HEAD HUNTERS ARE COMING!”
Thanks to Paul & Joy Hattaway, who recently shared the following story on the Brigada-Peoples conference: “Look out! The head hunters are coming! Until recently, this was the cry of countless inhabitants of the mountains of northern Burma and southern China, who lived in utter terror of the Wa minority group. Amongst all the tribes of Asia, the Wa are one of the most bound and desperately needy. … The Wa are well-known for their practice of head-hunting, which is rumored to still continue today in some of the remote parts of Myanmar’s Shan State. For centuries the Wa head-hunted for the purpose of ensuring a good harvest. The demons that grip them demand the sacrifice of humans to assure the crops will not fail. … But God looked down from heaven and prepared the hearts of the Wa to receive the Gospel of His Son. An amazing testimony of God’s love and power took place in northern Burma in 1906. … At that time a witch-doctor in a certain Wa village owned three white donkeys. He laid his hands on the middle donkey and told the village elders, “If you follow this donkey, it will lead you to the True God.” For weeks the elders followed the donkey for a distance of 200 miles across remote terrain. One day it stopped outside the house of William Young, an American Baptist missionary who was working amongst the Lahu tribe. Young became the first to take the Gospel message to the Wa. Salvation swept many areas as hundreds of hearts already prepared by the Holy Spirit converted to Christ.” Thanks Paul! (Paul Harvey eat your heart out!)

RADIO-EMAIL FROM SOUTH AFRICA FOR FREE!
That’s right! Have you heard about the guy in South Africa that has set up a ham radio station that is somehow linked to the Internet to receive email, convert it to ham radio signals, then send it out into the air waves for the intended receiver to pick up, re-transmit back into email text??? What a system! To use this system, you’d need a ham radio license (which means you’d have to learn morse code and theory/laws), the ham radio rig (nice antenna and transmitter/receiver can cost $1000+), and the time to get it all figured out… but once you were up and running, imagine how great it would be if you’re, say, out in Northern Luzon, beyond the end of a telephone’s reach! That’s exactly the way it is for one missionary who is serving there in the Philippines, receiving email from his father-in-law on a regular basis! So… if you’re interested, check out the South African ham operator’s web site at http://goofy.iafrica.com/~joost or, if you don’t have web access and if you’re absolutely, positively, without-a-doubt interested in using the service and you have a ham license and an antenna/receiver, you could so write the South African guy’s direct email address at joostatiafricadotcom. But please be sensitive and don’t just write him with mere chit-chat. The guy is doing a tremendous service and we don’t want to take him away from his ministry! For more information about how the service works in practical ways (yes – it really works!), write the father-in-law (Dale Leathead, of World Team, in Warrington, PA, at 102626dot3217atCompuServedotCOM ). Remember, you heard it first on Brigada! Thanks for the tip, Dale!!!

BUSINESS ON THE NET . . . FOR HIS GLORY
Have you heard about the Business Executives Consultation that’s going to happen in Pretoria next summer (in conjunction with GCOWE 97)? Check out their new web site at http://www.iccc.net/ad2000. “As believers in the marketplace, many of us are burning to take the Gospel to the nations, using our businesses as the vehicle, or if you like, as a weapon in God’s hands. ‘Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weakling say, ‘I am strong!’ Come quickly, all you nations from every side, and assemble there. Bring down your warriors, O Lord!’ Joel 3:10-11.” Thanks to James Lockett, Vice President of the International Christian Chamber of Commerce! (See their site at http://www.iccc.net. )

GET READY FOR THE “NIGHT OF POWER” (PRAYER FOR MUSLIM FRIENDS)
Have you heard about Day 27 of Ramadan (approx. Feb. 5), which apparently is a special night for Muslims? They evidently consider this a “Night of Power”? Anyway, one Brigada participant suggested that we organize prayer vigils that evening in hopes that Muslim friends would learn about the power of the Christ, the true Messiah. For more information about the possibilities for Feb. 5th, write Missionary Action/FLAME (Fund for Latin Americans in Muslim Evangelism) maflameatjunodotcom. Thanks Lee!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM MONGOLIA
Not long ago, some very strangely dressed people burst into a Christian meeting in the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator. It turned out that they were from the Gobi Altai, a region hardly reached by the gospel. They had once seen the “Jesus Film” and since then had been meeting in one of the village leaders’ houses to read the Bible. The question, that they made the long journey to ask, was: when can someone come to start a church?

Global Glimpse is compiled each week by John Hanna, Caleb Project, Littleton, CO.

RAMADAN… THE FREE POSTER
Just a few days ago, I was meeting with friends in a small restaurant in N. Africa as the news started traveling the streets of the city we were visiting. The Muslim cleric in charge of the country had seen the moon in just the right position… Ramadan had begun. Sirens wailed, and soon the call to prayer mustered the citizens to begin their 30-day fast. We joined them throughout their first day of Ramadan… and many have been praying for them ever since as a part of the fifth annual international “30 Days Muslim Prayer Focus” (Jan 10 to Feb 8). Over 30,000 adult Prayer Guides (and 5,000 “Just for Kids” booklets) have been distributed during the last few weeks within North America alone! To further promote prayer for the Muslim world, the North American office for the “30 Days” is now offering illustrated two-color posters for postage & handling charges only (a $7 value)-over 1,000 are available. U.S. $1 for the USA, Canada and Mexico; U.S. $2 for the rest of the world. To get your 14 x 22 inch poster, send your request with the postage cost to:

WorldChristian News & Books
PO Box 26479

And don’t forget to pray for your Muslim friends throughout the world!

MAYBE ASK ONE QUESTION AT A TIME?
We get mail. Boy do we get mail. We recently received this request: “Could you send me information on Manila Philippines, Mexico City, Bogota Colombia, and Sao Paulo Brazil? I would also appreciate up-to-date information on Rwanda, Zambia, Ethiopia and Mozambique? The information I really need is the situation with the evangelical church, number of missionaries, etc.” I mean, why don’t we just broaden the question a bit… “Define the universe; be brief, be precise. Give examples.” Tip of the week: If you write a volunteer for help, ask a specific question to get a specific answer. Brigada volunteers can come up with some great help – but they aren’t miracle workers! So – the best place to ask questions about specific people groups or cities is in brigada-peoples and brigada-cities. To join those conferences, send email to hubatxcdotorg with only these two lines in the text of the message:
subscribe brigada-peoples
subscribe brigada-cities

Make sure you send this message to hubatxcdotorg and not to brigadaatbrigadadotorg!

Read the welcome messages. They will explain how to get more help and how to use the system. You can unsubscribe at any time. And . . . yes… if you send a message to the brigada-peoples conference, there are hundreds of volunteers there ready to try to help you get information on a specific people group (probably better than hitting “reply” to this copy of Brigada Today). But even to the hundreds of volunteers in brigada-peoples, maybe you still ought to just try one question at a time??? :-)

DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE FREE MOBILE HOME Brigada IS GIVING AWAY?
(I’m not kidding, sort of.) It’s true. Overheard on the brigada-medicine-for-poor conference, . . . “A relative of mine has a mobile home 12X68 that he is willing to donate to a charity. …This unit is available for donation to a charity. … Merry Christmas … Robert Jaquiss robertjatteleportdotCOM ” Merry Christmas indeed! The ultimate stocking stuffer – a mobile home! [ ] Try wrapping that baby under the tree for junior! :-) How ’bout that for marketing giveaways… “Brigada – the people who give away mobile homes!” (Actually, it was a Brigada participant giving it away, . . . but when you have no marketing department, you have to take advantage of any possible angle you can get, right?) So… if you’re interested in a mobile home for your charity, just write Robert. Hope you’re not too late! And yes, you probably would have to move it from its current site in Oregon. :-) (that’s like saying, “batteries not included,” O=== right? :-) )

WANT A GREAT CD ENCYCLOPEDIA FOR $79?
[][] Greg Parsons, Exec. Dir. of the US Center for World Missions, recommends that you run (don’t walk) to call (in the USA) 800-747-2194. (If you live overseas, ask a friend in the USA to call for you.) The normal price for the Encyclopedia Britannica is $800 – but for a limited time, try getting the on-line CD for $79!!! Shipping should be about $8. And they even have a MAC version! Windows req. on a PC. This is a great deal… with perhaps 10 times as much info. as other CD encyclopedias on the market. They say it has the entire text of the written version!!! I just ordered my copy!!! Still $79 instead of $800! Thanks for the tip, Greg!

“DID YOU KNOW?” – FROM OUR UKRAINIAN CORRESPONDENT
From a reader living in Ukraine we begin a regular 4-line column called, “Did you Know?” These are the kinds of lines that I’m sure will make their way onto the wall beside your desk. They’re the items that you’ll ponder all day long. Why, I wouldn’t be surprised if board rooms of agencies and churches across America become so involved with conversation on these issues that we see a complete doubling of mission efforts within the coming 12 months. ( :-) Actually, maybe we’ll smile once and awhile and it’ll help take our minds off the problems we’re facing?????? :-) )

This week’s “Did you know?”

[drum roll please]:

Did you know that 111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321

[Are you excited or what!!! :-) Thanks to Chris in the Ukraine! You win this week’s prize for the most amazing “Did You Know?” item. Your subscription to Brigada Today has been extended for a full year absolutely free!!!]

HUB-CAPS (Recaps about computing with Brigada)
Brigada is a system of email “conferences” (some people refer to these as “list servers”, but we prefer the word conference, in most cases, since it better illustrates that there are dozens of people working together to solve problems and address needs). It is run totally by volunteers. There is no “office”. (You can’t “dial Brigada.”) There is no budget. There is no marketing division. The “hub” email computer is located in Columbus, Ohio, and where it is operated by MAFxc, a division of MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship – the people with the airplanes). The MAF people who run it are actually located in Redlands, CA. They are very much partners in the work, especially as it relates to developing technical wizardry that we can all use. But at the same time, they would be the first to admit that Brigada doesn’t belong to them, per se (they host 937 such conferences in all, some quite busy!). They’re the hardware/software/connectivity providers – and each of them has a passion for world evangelism! This is their ministry! A couple of us in the Brigada network voluntarily pitch in the money to pay them the $160/year for the web page – and conference-moderators pitch in $52/year for their xc.org addresses. Every once-and-awhile, we’ll pitch in $80 to ‘hire’ them to develop some new conference capability. E.g., it was the Brigada family who pitched in the cost to help offset the time to develop the “get” and “put” commands.

There are several conferences that have experienced significant growth.
Brigada-peoples has 281 participants,
brigada-job-shop has 301,
brigada-orgs-missionmobilizers is next with 307,
brigada-pubs-gcowenews has 354 and
brigada-pubs-globalprayerdigest tops that with 634!
Brigada-us-prayertrack now has grown to 870 participants, and
Brigada-pubs-missionfrontiers is the second largest group with 1625 subscribers.
And this conference (which is actually more like a list-server, I suppose) is the conduit for Brigada Today (the publication you’re reading), which attempts to tie together the “family of conferences” below it in the hierarchy. There are currently 4449 readers each weekend. If we were to mail this news bulletin via the postal service to 4449 readers within one particular country (say, the USA), we estimate that the cost would be around $1000/week just for postage alone. Add in paper and printing cost and before long, you’re talkin’ some major bucks! Subscription would run you around $25/year if there were no salaries involved, but there’d be tons more work doing the printing, labeling, sorting, grouping, and posting. All together, over $100,000/year would be required to keep it running, and that’s just for the top level of Brigada alone! Try multiplying that times the zillions of messages being exchanged in every conference in the Brigada family and before long, it makes you ask…

Assuming we already have email access, how is it we can get all this practically for free?

(Okay – I’ll admit; they charge us $52/year for the xc.org address and the ability to create conferences. But with that $52, we’re mailing to thousands of people every week!!!) Whoever said computers didn’t save us money? Thanks to the visionaries who started MAFxc! (If you’d like to invest in MAF and/or start your own email conference for your mission or project, write helpdeskatxcdotorg. And by the way, we are not employed by MAF nor do we get our xc.org address at a discount for bragging on them. We just like what they’ve created!!! :-) Oh and by the way – did we tell you about their web page hosting ability? :-) )

For a complete list of MAFxc conferences, send an email message to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the message:

GCOWE SUMMARY REPORT
(/) Wondering what’s been happening in South Africa at GCOWE 97? Well here’s the report, written anonymously via an interview with a delegate who is working in a very closed part of the world and actually attended GCOWE under a pseudonym. Here we go! “Thank you to the Brigada family for your prayers during GCOWE 97 this past week in Pretoria, South Africa. It was quite inspirational to give God praise in a room of 4,200 people reported to be from 135 countries. Personally I don’t like conferences but I left happy that I had made over 10 key ministry contacts that are usually very hard for me to make since I live and work in a very restricted part of the Muslim world. One of these new contacts with a politician who attended the Business Executives sub-consultation may very well lead toward the placement of workers in a currently very closed country. I attended the Mission Executives sub-consultation and I was concerned it would be yet another inspirational time with little work done. My fears melted away when Luis Bush handed us all a copy of the new book compiled for GCOWE by the AD2000 and Beyond Movement called the “Global Guide to Unreached Peoples.” The book was the catalyst for arranged small group work over the next two days in groups by regions of the world. When the results were tallied on the final day 390 previously unengaged groups from this unreached peoples list now had agency leaders who had adopted them as peoples to present to their organizations in hopes of sending new church planting teams. I was encouraged by this but more optimistic when it was reported that the leaders in the African National Initiatives sub-consultation had taken on 222 of the peoples in Africa still without known church planting teams. Since these were mostly African leaders adopting peoples in their own countries I am quite optimistic that something will come of this commitment. Luis Bush reported on the last night that now 90% of the 1,739 peoples in this book (though some data not shown for security reasons) now have names and addresses registered indicating a church planting movement in their midst or at least a commitment to mobilize a team of church planters. Though this “Global Guide” book will not be for sale to mission leaders who did not attend GCOWE for another month or so I heard that the Southern Baptist International Mission Board had already ordered 150 copies to give to all their regional leadership.” Now we’re talkin’! That’s the kind of “nuts and bolts” tangible outcome that we’ve all been waiting for! Bravo Luis Bush! Bravo GCOWE 97 delegates! And thanks to the anonymous interviewee!!!

————————————–

PREGNANCY SURVEY REALLY DELIVERS!
(/)Well, I guess you could say that this particular baby was a real hit! :-) In fact, it almost seems like Brigada participants were breathless waiting for this inquiry to come along! :-) Seriously, remember last week’s item, “HERE’S A SURVEY YOU’VE GOT TO SEE TO BELIEVE” ??? Dr. Dale Carroll (who is very much a “he” and not a “she” as we reported; yikes; Sorry Dr. Dale! Will you ever forgive me? :-)) reports over 100 immediate responses to the request for those who were pregnant or delivered or miscarried overseas. He hastens to add that all reports will be considered very confidential and that snail mail addresses will be needed so he can send out the actual survey. He’ll be ultra-careful to guard identities and roles for those in sensitive countries. If you’re interested in participating or learning more, contact Dr. Dale Carroll at TravDocatcompuservedotcom, The Pregnant Traveler, 983 Miners Road, St. Joseph, MI 49085, phone 616-428-4996 (fax–616-428-0977). Dr. Carroll has agreed to make available an abstract for all Brigada participants to “get” as soon as the project is completed. Thanks!

CSi (COMPUSERVE) GIVES YOU A SECOND CHANCE
Okay. So I admit I’ve ragged some on Compuserve (CSi). But they deserved it. :-) Now before you write me [again] and jump me for criticizing them, note that I used past tense — “deserved.” Maybe they’re turning over a new leaf… or realizing their wicked ways. :-) Recently, they’ve picked up some improved features… For example, you can now send and receive binary files — graphics, documents, spreadsheets, and the like — seamlessly over the Internet. You can also personalize your e-mail address, turning your User ID number into a name. With a click here and a click there, you can transform 70006,101 into JSMITH. Oops! Don’t like that Personal Address anymore? Now you change it so JSMITH can become J.SMITH or Jim_Smith. All of these features are part of CompuServe’s new mail system and are part of CSi’s ongoing commitment to bringing you the very best e-mail. To take full advantage of these rich features, you must use CompuServe’s new mail system. To learn about this and switch to new mail if you haven’t already done so, GO NEWMAIL. Thanks to Sharon, our official Brigada Compuserve Help Specialist, at 71712dot3534atCompuServedotCOM, for sending this tip! And for those CSi loyalists who have written, I promise to stop raggin’ on CSi. :-)

CALLING ALL UNHAPPY KALLMART USERS
Have you ever used “KallMart” as your long distance calling or callback service? Were you unhappy because you felt they overcharged (based on their claims)? Sharon Gardner wants to know. She’s head of CrossLink Communications, a Christian based company that helps missionaries select the dialback company best suited for their international calling patterns. Their mission is to help those in full time ministry conserve their resources by finding cheaper ways of staying in touch with the “folks back home”. At one point, they had apparently used KallMart as one of their offerings. But no more. There have apparently been too many complaints about calls costing more than what KallMart promised, fees being assessed, etc. As a result, CrossLink is currently trying to get KallMart to resolve these problems and give refunds. (CrossLink does its best to keep their clients from being defrauded.) Sharon wrote Brigada this past week, “If ANY missionaries have a complaints against KallMart, we encourage them to contact us with the details, even if they are not a CrossLink customer. We will be happy to “plead their case” along with our own customers. There is strength in numbers.” So… write Sharon at CrossLink Communications, 9216 Independence Loop, Austin, Texas 78748, USA, tel. 512.292.3308, FAX 512.282.5877, crosslinkatearthlinkdotnet.

HOT TIP – PGP 5.0 NOW AVAILABLE INTERNATIONALLY!!!
As far as we can tell, this is a Brigada Today exclusive, thanks to a hot tip from TC! (Thanks TC! As long as there are people like you around, Brigada Today will be valuable for the nearly 6000 subscribers who receive it each week!!!) PGP version 5.0 is now available internationally via anonymous FTP at ftp://ftp.ox.ac.uk:/pub/crypto/pgp/pc/windows95. (PGP is a program that allows you to encode your email so no one can read it except the person to whom you’ve sent it. For this process to work, both the sender and receiver need to be able to use PGP.) What this means is that international users no longer have to wait for all that OCR/source code/re-write stuff that we all thought would have to happen first. If you’re in the USA, you can get PGP version 5.0 at http://web.mit.edu/network/pgp.html and if you’re outside the USA, you can get version 5.0 at ftp://ftp.ox.ac.uk:/pub/crypto/pgp/pc/windows95 today! Thanks TC!

GOT QUESTIONS ABOUT PGP? SEE THE PGP FAQ
Thanks to Rod who refers readers to http://www.pgp.net/pgpnet/pgp-faq/ for answers to frequently asked questions about PGP. Also, don’t forget http://www.ifi.uio.no/pgp/ or http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/pgp-begin.html if you want to learn more about what might be the world’s best encryption program. And remember that the freeware version is available at http://web.mit.edu/network/pgp.html for Win95/WinNT users. Win 3.1 users start at http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/pgp-begin.html then go to http://www.seattle-webworks.com/pgp/. Rod writes, “From here, advice is given on downloading and configuring PGP262 and the AEgis Pretty Good Privacy Windows Shell. Since PGP262 operates from DOS and looks a bit strange, a shell makes PGP much easier to use.”

————————————–

BUT I’VE NOTHING TO HIDE – WHY USE ENCRYPTION?
I felt the same way. Then this Brigada participant approached me one day and asked me why I should ever expect others to start using encryption when I didn’t’ use it myself. He used the logic that PGP’s author uses, “What if everyone believed that law-abiding citizens should use postcards for their mail? If some brave soul tried to assert his privacy by using an envelope for his mail, it would draw suspicion. Perhaps the authorities would open his mail to see what he’s hiding. Fortunately, we don’t live in that kind of world, because everyone protects most of their mail with envelopes. So no one draws suspicion by asserting their privacy with an envelope. There’s safety in numbers. Analogously, it would be nice if everyone routinely used encryption for all their E-mail, innocent or not, so that no one drew suspicion by asserting their E-mail privacy with encryption.” Made sense to me. So I bit the bullet and started trying to learn PGP262. Yikes. It wasn’t easy. So I began using a “shell” program and it got lots easier. Now with version 5.0, it’s easier still — in fact, now it’s almost like fallin’ off a log! So my commitment is that if anyone is willing to write me using PGP, I’ll always return the reply in the same form. So will you take the dare and use PGP? Today, with this new version, there are no more excuses. And there are versions for everyone, including MAC users. :-) Want more info? HOW TO CONTACT YOU FAVORITE BRIGADA MODERATOR
You can write the moderator of any Brigada conference by emailing <owner-conferenceatxcdotorg>. For example, if you sent a note to owner-brigadaatbrigadadotorg, you’d get Revis Ann Massey, who serves voluntarily (ie., as a labor of love) as the Customer Relations Manager for the nearly 6000 Brigada Today readers. If you write owner-brigada-peoplesatxcdotorg, you’ll get Dave Nesmith, of Global Mapping, who serves as the moderator for Brigada-Peoples. Write owner-brigada-pubs-missionfrontiersatxcdotorg and you’ll get Rick Wood himself, the Editor of Mission Frontiers at the US Center. GCOWE PARTICIPANT ALMOST KILLED
Did you hear about Pete Holzmann? He’s the Interactive Task Force Coordinator for the AD2000 & Beyond Movement. He wrote Brigada this past week with this: “Don’t know if you heard, but I was hit by a fast-moving car here in Pretoria last Friday afternoon. Smashed leg, smashed windshield, two flips through the air and dead (no pulse no breathing) for a full minute after landing far away. And I’m only one of several people involved in tragedy here. Satan’s fighting. BUT GOD is performing miracles, turning every bad situation into victory! I’m doing great, and each problem has been turned around for His best! I could list a whole page of God’s blessings in my accident. (Just a few, besides the fact that my pulse/breathing started again :-) … it happened 5 minutes from the best hospital in Africa; car had unusual bumper that caused my leg to break in a “good” place, and flipped me up rather than running over me and crushing me; no brain damage (did my hat protect me? I don’t remember :-)); I’ve had time to realize some good lessons from the Lord, perhaps with wide application; others were motivated to give my presentations, which helped them turn out well; I’ve had lots of opportunity to be Christ’s light in others’ lives here at the hospital; What a JOY!!!” So how did this happen? Pete summarized, “So I looked both ways before crossing the street. But when someone yelled “look out!” I had to react; no time to think. And my reaction was exactly wrong: I looked to the right instead of the left [because Pete’s orientation was USA, but drivers use the other side of the street in South Africa?], and ended up almost dead. Literally.” What has he learned from all this? “In new situations (x-c ministry, a changing world, “tentmaking”, new friends, new paradigms, new locations, etc etc), if we have time to think about our situation we usually do OK. But when we must react without thinking, we often make terrible mistakes! Some conclusions (lots more than this…): In new situations, give yourself time. Absorb the “new” quickly so that you’ll react well. Don’t assume you’ve adjusted to the new just because you feel like you fit in: will you react properly in an emergency?” Thanks for taking a lemon and turning it into lemonade, Pete! Pete’s homepage is http://www.xc.org/pete. He’s one very busy guy at PeteatXCdotOrg.

FINISHERS AVAILABLE ON-LINE
(/)Remember last week’s item, “HOW DO WE GET THEM ‘FROM HERE TO THERE’???” Well don’t forget that you can access the Finishers Project online at brigada-projects-finishers by sending email to hubatxcdotorg with only these words in the text of the message:
subscribe brigada-projects-finishers

According to “Finishers” leadership, “The Finishers Project is a movement involving leading mission agencies to give mature candidates (35 to about 55) the information and challenge necessary to consider an assignment from the Lord somewhere in the missions infrastructure – before the conventional retirement at 60 something. The method to accomplish the task will be to hold “Urbana”-like conferences for second-career people.” Sounds like a super idea. They’re planning their first major face-to-face conference in Chicago, September 17-19, 1998. For more information, join the on-line brigada-projects-finishers conference today!

CALLING ALL NON-WESTERN CHURCH PLANTER TRAINERS
Wade Robertson writes, “Are you a Non-Westerner with cross-cultural church planting field experience and with some good frontier experiences to share? Have you ever wanted to visit historic Scotland, a land from which many pioneer missionaries were sent in former generations to the ends of the earth? Do you want to be part of a team training a new generation of missionaries for church planting in the 10/40 Window? You may even challenge someone to join your team! At the moment our staff are all from western nations, but we want those we train to benefit from staff with a greater diversity of backgrounds and experience. You could have a really valuable input through the insights you would be able to share both in and out of the classroom. The opening is for Aug 31st 1997 to 19th December and you would need to find staff fees of about L175 per month. Interested? Contact Wade Robertson 100556dot60atcompuservedotcom for more details.” This is a great sign for all of us. . . globalization, internationalization, . . . it looks more like Revelation 7. :-) Thanks Wade.

Okay. So the new graphical Brigada logo at the top of each issue is totally unreadable in your email client??? Sorry about that. Well I’m a missionary, not an artist. :-) Actually, to see it, you’d have to set the default font to something “fixed” like Courier New (as opposed to proportional, like Times Roman). If you don’t like it, just ignore it… (after all, it’s only five lines! :-) ). However, if it’s really in your way and you’d like it cut from all future issues, please send a message to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the message:

The “c” in this case stands for “cut”! :-) Here’s your chance to speak out! :-)

EMERGENCY SITUATIONS REQUIRE EXCEPTIONAL RESPONSES
Not long ago, Eric Derry brought the following story to my attention, originally from Chicken Soup for the Soul by Mark V. Hansen:

In 1989 an 8.2 earthquake flattened Armenia killing over 30,000 in four
minutes. After the first tremor, a father rushed to the school where his
son attended only to find the structure totally demolished. As he looked
at the ruins he remembered the promise he made to his son: “No matter what,
I’ll always be there for you.”

The father went to the corner of the building where his son’s classroom was and began digging. For the next 37 hours he searched through the rubble. Many people tried to stop him but to each he replied, “Are you going to help me?” No one did.

Then on the 38th hour he screamed his son’s name and a voice came back. “I’m here! It’s me Father.” Fourteen scared, hungry and thirsty children emerged out of the devastation.

I think what strikes me the most about this story is the father’s incredible determination. It’s probably not uncommon for parents to make amazing sacrifices during these kinds of emergencies. But this guy took it to the max. He dug and dug and dug and then dug some more. Obviously, his love for his son motivated him beyond the norm.

In our work in world missions, we have been called to do some outlandishly difficult tasks. Sometimes, those tasks require all the gusto we can manage to pull up from our inner being. We need to be like the father in the story… and when you stop and think about it, we get to pull people from ruins for a living! Every person — one at a time — that we can snatch from the fires of Hell is just like the little rescued boy in the story above… only instead of helping them regain their earthly lives, we’re helping them climb to eternal life.

So today, when you walk out the front door and enter the street or path where you serve, don’t lose sight of the reason you’re digging… and . . . may you have many happy rescues!!!
