NOW THERE’S A WAY TO GET INFO ON YOUR SELECTED PEOPLE GROUP!
This is a Special Edition of Brigada Today. Until now, how would you have discovered connections and options for getting “from here to there?” Most of the time, we rely on incidental relationships… or worse yet, pure serendipity. But now, through the magic of the Internet, a hard worker has made good use of Brigada technology to provide safe links to pioneer ministry among specific peoples or areas.

We told you in previous issues that something special was in the wings for October. Well, it’s October!!! The day is here!!! The “something special” is ready!!! And it’s free and ready to use! You’ve got all the software you need (nothing to buy, nothing to download, nothing to install) — and all the hardware you need. All you have to do is put it to use!

Over the last four years a great momentum has been building around the world to begin or strengthen ministry to the least reached people groups. More and more churches are focusing their missions efforts around adopting a people group. … As a result there are more and more people who want up-to-date information about specific ethnic groups. … At the same time many of the field workers in pioneer fields are organizing themselves into field-based ministry partnerships. … The problem, though, is that the field partnerships and advocacy teams need a level of security for them to be able to continue their ministry. … The Brigada Connections family of e-mail addresses seeks to help solve this problem. Caleb Project, in close partnership with Interdev and other major international missions initiatives, has been working to assemble MINISTRY KEY CONTACT TEAMS who are able and willing to assist a broad base of Christians to link up with pioneer ministry among specific peoples. This ongoing process has resulted in the formation of more than 40 teams of ministry leaders, people group advocates, partnership facilitators, and missions researchers who are committed to help the Body of Christ worldwide develop strategic ministry relationships for these strategic people groups. These are qualified, experienced, informed people with a good understanding of all aspects of ministry in their areas of focus, including the security issues.

Please look through the attached list and consider contacting one or more of these key contact teams. This is NOT an automated data retrieval system. Rather, it is a means by which you can begin a caring relationship with those involved in pioneer missions work. If you are involved or want to be involved with one of the groups listed below, please write them and let them know: who you are (they need to know they can trust you), what your current interest, activity, or commitment is, how you might like to be involved in the future in what ways you hope to assist in their area of expertise.

The Brigada Connections project is a WORK IN PROGRESS! If you are part of a ministry key contact team for an unreached group, city, or area, please let us know connectionsatcprojectdotcom and we’ll contact you with more information about what is involved in this project.

Note: this program is made available entirely on a volunteer basis. If you would like to know how you can volunteer, or would like to support this project financially, please contact us.

So spread the word! Let’s put these teams to work!

Thanks to John Hanna, Advocacy Director with Caleb Project, Littleton, CO, for a job well done!!! (You can contact John via (303) 730-4170 (voice), or (303) 730-4177 (fax), or just write Connectionsatcprojectdotcom.

For the most current list of Brigada Connections groups, send the following message to hubatxcdotorg
conferences brigada-connections

Then you can write a particular “connections” — e.g., send an email to <brigada-connections-acehneseatxcdotorg>. Note that through a special configuration of Brigada email conferencing, you don’t have to “join” this group for your email to land in their “in-basket.” The “connections team” for the group you want to contact will remain the only “members” — and they’ll all get a copy of your inquiry. As time goes on, John wants to launch additional connections forums as they are needed and as additional workers become available.

Do these “Brigada-connections” conferences do away with the existing “Brigada-peoples” conferences? Nope. The new “connections” conferences aren’t designed for press releases or free exchange. They’re only for referrals and inquiries. That’s the beauty of the system!

So — try it. Pick out a people that you’d like to know more about. Let’s test these connections conferences with all 6000+ Brigada participants!!! :-) These guys want to grow a movement!!! And… thanks John and all the connections teams!!!!

BRAVO TO BETHANY!
Thanks to Rick Ward and the whole Bethany crew! This week they issued a press release proclaiming victory — “The most comprehensive prayer and resource material ever produced on the Unreached Peoples is now available through Bethany World Prayer Center…” 1739 people profiles are going out the door soon! This has been a monumental undertaking… over two years in development, over 50,000 man hours of work, over $450,000 invested in research & printing, and now over 2 million Prayer Profiles in stock. Call (504)774-2002 or check out their web site at http://www.bethany-wpc.org/profiles/home.html. Bravo to Bethany!!!!!!!!

————————————–

HOW CAN YOU GET DAILY PTW3 INFO?
Just subscribe to Global Prayer Digest! John Hanna reminded all of us this past week that the GPD is meshing their daily updates with Praying Through the Window III people groups, as the days of this month tick by. So — waste no more time. Send email to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the message:
subscribe brigada-pubs-globalprayerdigest

You’ll receive daily reminders… along with about 1000 other people! Literally! :-)

————————————–

THOSE YELLOW RECTANGLES FOR EVEN LESS!
Last week’s item, ” WHAT IF YOU COULD OWN A COPY OF EVERY NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC?” attracted quite a stir. At least one Brigada participant found the National Geographic CD compendium for an even better price via MicroWarehouse (800-367-7080 or fax 908-363-4834) — $179! (Thanks Lester!!!) So you might find it locally at a computer warehouse (if there’s one near you???) for something similar. Otherwise, find a friend who can order it for you from Microwarehouse and add 108 years of NG to your research library!!! That’s less than $2/year! :-)

————————————–

SO WHY DIDN’T WE EVER MENTION THE HARVEST?!
Carole’s a mobilizer in our office here and she walked in last week with the great little video, The Harvest and I realized, we’ve never even mentioned it here. Marketed by Integrated Resources (a division of Campus Crusade) out of Indiana University, you can get it in the USA (or via your fancy Internet telephone setups) by calling 1-800-729-4351 or by faxing 812-339-8389 from anywhere in the world. It’s like 15 minutes or so long… excellent quality . . . a parable about a boy remembering a very special harvest day after his father had passed away, when farmers came from all around to help get the harvest in on time. Incredible message, great application. $14.95 plus shipping & handling (which is $5 to USA addresses). Well worth your while to use it at your next missions rally or faith-promise! Forgive us for not profiling it before. It’s a 1996 film.

————————————–

NOW ET ISN’T THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN PHONE HOME!
Norm Kluever normdotklueveratworldnetdotattdotnet wants to make it easier for the people in your office to phone everywhere. He’s got a couple of small PBX phone systems (the “dial 9” type!) that he can donate to a mission group, Christian school, or other nonprofit. Any takers? If so, contact Norm directly. Thanks for your unselfishness, Norm!

————————————–

WISH EMAIL ADDRESSES BETRAYED GENDER!!!
Then I’d be saved from embarrassment like that of last week’s item, “CHILDREN’S MISSIONS RESOURCE FILE.” It thanked “Gerry Dueck at the US Center in Pasadena” for a job well done assembling children’s resources. Well the job was well done all right, but the editor was half baked! :-) Gerry is very much a lady! Sorry Gerry!

————————————–

MARCH-WATCH
Want more information on the international March for Jesus programs??? If so, there’s an email conference set up for disseminating information called mfj-news. To subscribe send a message to hubatxcdotorg with the message
subscribe mfj-news

This is a one-way conference where messages about MFJ will be posted a maximum of once a week.

NOW YOU CAN UNDERSTAND THE MUSLIM MIND
Part of sharing hope and help with Muslims consists of learning more about our similarities and differences. Arab World Ministries has a booklet entitled, “Understanding the Muslim Mindset: Questions about Islam,” which is a compilation of questions and answers about Islam by retired AWM missiologist, Sam Schlorff. The booklet is $2.95, plus $1.25 shipping and handling and may be ordered by calling 1-800-447-3566. See AWM’s web site for more details and more resources about Islam: http://www.awm.org

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM INDIA
New Life Fellowship (NLF) is spreading Gospel fire across India! From its small beginnings back in the 1960s in Bombay, now NLF has sent thousands of missionaries into hundreds of pioneer regions across India. Each day roughly 2500 missionaries take the Gospel to an average audience of 20,000 — souls that are witnessed to face-to-face in personal evangelism. On an average they see 270 people come to Christ daily. NLF has a goal to recruit, train and send 30,000 missionaries to cover every unreached region in India.

GET TAPES FROM THE HOTTEST SPEAKER AT GCOWE97 (GEORGE VERWER) FOR FREE!
Yes, your eyes don’t deceive you. George Verwer (Int’l Director of OM) is giving away (or you can include a donation if you want) his tapes to potential Christian leaders around the world. (And thanks to John Hanna for making us aware!) This kind of ministry attitude is very rare today. Catch it in this quote from their heart… ” We are so excited about people making their own copies that we would be willing to send money for the blank cassettes.” Wow. Unheard of. They explained, “These tapes are all available free or on a donation basis. Don’t hesitate to order due to financial restraints. If there is a way you can visit us and pick up any especially large orders, that will save money as postage costs are one of our obstacles, especially outside Europe and North America. Please don’t order large amounts if there is a high chance that they will be stolen in the mail. Perhaps ordering a small number at a time would be best.” What’s available?

* “Why Become A Missionary / Why Come on Global Action” (brand new)
* “Does The Lack Of Funds Hinder God’s Work”?
* “Challenge Of Turkey”
* “Ship Ministry”
* “How To Be A Missions Mobiliser”
* “Acts 13 Breakthrough 2000”
* “Why 200,000 Missionaries”
* “Why I Joined AD 2000”
* “Building Loyalty”
* “The Labourer Is Worthy Of His Hire”
* “Why Go To Bible College”
* “The Middle Road … Is It Possible”
* “Why Give To Operation Mobilisation”
* “Tension Between Being and Doing”
* “Special Book Reviews”
* “Financial Crisis”
* “Minefields In Counseling”
* “Being Big Hearted”
* “Why People Get Away From Jesus”
* “Resourcing God’s Work”
* “Raising Support”
* “Further Thoughts on the 7 Major Emphases”
* “Testimony”

If you’d like some more detail on each of these tapes, send an email message to hubatxcdotorg with only these words in the text of the message:

You’ll receive an expanded list, complete with annotation, and a letter from George Verwer.

HOT-OFF-THE-PRESSES, “CHILDREN OF THE WINDOW”
I’ve only seen the color proofs, but wow did they look hot. Caleb Project has just released its new 8 1/2″ X 11″, 4 color, 1998 calendar featuring the phantastic photography of Mike Staub & Patty Fraats. Each month features a child from an unreached people group in the 10/40 Window with a scripture, info, & prayer points. There are also two tear-out pages of details on each of the 12 people groups represented and a page of resources at the back (along with an opportunity to order the 1999 “Women of the 10/40 Window”).

Calendars are $9.95 each, 6 (or more) for $7.50 each, 50 (or more) $6.00 each, plus shipping & handling. Prepayment by check, or credit card (VISA & Master Card only). E-mail orders go to ordersatcprojectdotcom, telephone orders go to 303-730-4170, xtn 343, and snail mail orders go to Caleb Project, #10 West Dry Creek Circle, Littleton, CO 80120. Can’t wait to get mine (already coming). I mean . . . these would look great on the wall in the kids’ bedroom, the kitchen, church office, the doctor’s office, the plumber’s office, etc. :-) Great gifts. I mean — which calendar would you rather have your teenager buy? This one, or that one from the sports magazine with all the bathing suits? :-)

————————————–

FROM THE GRAB-BAG: PAL VCRS FOR YOUR PALS IN THE FORMER SOVIET UNION
Here’s your chance. You probably won’t see PAL VCRs for less, nor will you see them any closer to your friends in the former Soviet Union. The CoMission just wrote Brigada Today this past week and they have 165 new (still in original cartons) Sharp video playback units warehoused in Germany. These are PAL/220v systems, left over from a stock purchased in 1993. They also have 55 custom-built carrying cases suitable for shipping these units with space available for peripheral items – extension cords, video cassettes, etc. Their Director of Arrangements wrote, “I would like to make these available to Brigada readers at a greatly reduced price, in lots of ten, either with or without the custom cases.” Rather nice of him, I thought. :-) Of course, all shipping and customs fees would naturally be the responsibility of the purchaser. CoMission has used this model all across the former Soviet Union for the past five years with great success. Interested? Contact Bob Ehle, CoMission Director of Arrangements, at rehleatcisdotcom. I wrote Bob back and asked him to give us some idea on the price. He responded, “The price is somewhat negotiable; the video playback units were $200 new; the base asking price in lots of ten is $125 each. The custom cases were $98 new; the base asking price in lots of ten is $55.” He also added, “Thanks, Doug. We not only want to stop paying warehouse fees; we’re anxious that the units be put to good use in the spread of the gospel!” Sounds fair enough to me!

CHILDREN’S MISSIONS RESOURCE FILE – A 7-VOLUME SET! FOR FREE!
I still marvel at the awesome power of the sum total of all Brigada participants working together. I mean, think about it. Just in the last couple of weeks we’ve learned about great prices on VCRs for the former Soviet Union, free tapes for Christian leaders from George Verwer, 10/40 Window color calendars, National Geographic collections on CD, that great list of “sources-for-stuff” and now a tremendous collection of resources for kids and missions In this case, Gerry Dueck at the US Center in Pasadena is the one to thank. He has painstakingly assembled a jam-packed a whoppin’ 118 K file (probably 70 pages??!), split it into 7 volumes, and made it available to Brigada participants at no charge. Why? Because he loves kids and wants these resources to be used to share with them the world and its needs! So — grab the phone and call your nearest Christian Education director. He or she needs this bibliography. It’s very very detailed and complete with email addresses and toll-free numbers and fax numbers galore. To get it, copy these lines and paste them into an email message to hubatxcdotorg . The 118K of resources will be emailed to you in a 7-volume set that you can reassemble on your own computer. Thanks Gerry.

WHAT IF YOU COULD OWN A COPY OF EVERY NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC?
When my wife and I were missionaries in Uruguay in the early 80s, I remember the family we stayed with in Montevideo had collected nearly every National Geographic magazine every produced. It was so cool to walk into their library and see that collection, and browse through people groups and faraway lands that NG had profiled. Well now, you can own that same collection and take it to the field with you on CD! All 108 years of National Geographic are available in a 30 CD-Rom set for the incredible price of $199.99!! Every page, every issue, every photo. What a tremendous resource for People Group research. You can check out the details at http://www.nationalgeographic.com/media/interactive/cdrom/108/. And thanks to Scott and others for putting us in touch with this great opportunity. What a tremendous Christmas gift that would be for someone special (ok — granted someone very special :-)) in your life. Or for the church or mission library! Check out the details at the NG web site. If you don’t have access to the web, ask a friend to check it out for you.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
Some time ago, Quamar mother’s near death triggered a spiritual search that changed his life forever. At a Bible teacher’s suggestion Quamar risked praying for her healing in the name of Jesus Christ. Visible changes immediately occurred in his mother and she recovered. As he began reading the Bible and Christian books, his family began to persecute him. After a time he left his home and village to seek Christian fellowship, but today he seeks more than ever to express the power of Jesus Christ to his family.
(Source: IMB: News Stories – 09/17/97, International Mission Board, SBC. To subscribe use the form at http://www.imb.org/maillist.htm or send an email message to: webservantatimbdotorg. Quamar’s name has been changed to protect his identity.)

GET IS GET, AND PUT IS PUT, AND NEVER THE TWAIN SHALL MEET
… at least not anymore, I hope. Last week’s item, ” PIT-STOP RALEIGH RALLIES… PIT-STOP TULSA TALLIES” featured a classic Brigada-type typo… where the word “put” was inadvertently put to get the word “get.” :-) Both are commands on the MAFxc hub, but typically only moderators fool with “put” and conference members can then “get” or retrieve whichever file was putted. :-) So — if you were looking for the file on Pit-Stop Tulsa and “put” wouldn’t “get,” please forgive me! “I was probably sleep-boarding again.” The proper syntax is:
get brigada pit-stop-tulsa
Send this line in the text of an email message to hubatxcdotorg and you’re in business! The hub will automatically email you back a reply filled with info on Pit-Stop Tulsa! No charge, no muss, no fuss. But — make sure you get instead of put! :-)

[Also, if you tried to get “english-help” (last week’s item, ” WANT TO FIND OUT THE EFFECT OF USING ENGLISH IN CHURCH PLANTING?”), try again; it’s there now.]

WEB-WATCH
Have you checked out http://www.answering-islam.org/ ? Apparently it’s operated by a guy from India who has had tremendous success corresponding with Muslims from throughout the world. In the privacy of their own homes they can link up with Jesus via their computer! His website has apparently had an average of 10,000 hits per WEEK. (Thanks for the tip, Gene!)

FILM-FIND
Swami is a great Hindi film, portraying the best of Hindusim, great for folks learning to contextualize among Hindus. You should be able to rent it from any local Indian video store — assuming you have one down the street :-) . Thanks Rod!

NEW ROX35 COMIX TRAINING COURSES COMING UP SOON!
Rox35 Comix will be holding two Christian Comics Training Courses this December in Thailand and Myanmar. Both are 3 day events and will include sessions on Writing/Scripting, Cultural Considerations, Illustration, Visual Storytelling, Comics & Communication, Editing/Art Directing, and Comics as part of an Overall Evangelism Strategy. The Thailand course is being hosted by Thailand Bible Society, 319/52-55 Vibhawadi Rangsit Road, Bangkok 10400, Phone (66) – (0)2 279 8341-4; Fax (66) – (0)2 616 0517 and will be held in Bangkok the first week of December, 1997. The Myanmar (Burma) course is being hosted by the Bible Society of Myanmar, 262 Sule Pagoda Road, Yangon, and will be held in Yangon (Rangoon) the second week of December, 1997. Enrollment is limited. (An Australian course, co-hosted by Pilgrim International in Sydney and the Bible Society of Australia, which was originally scheduled for this September, has been postponed until the second week of September, 1998.) STILL AMAZED AT “SOURCES-FOR-STUFF”
If you haven’t downloaded the file “sources-for-stuff” yet, you’re missing out. (Last week’s item, ” WHERE TO BUY ALMOST ANYTHING . . .”) If we charged $14.95 for this, you’d think you were getting a steal! But since it’s free, you’ll be tempted to think it’s not worth “getting.” Well — if you ever think you might want to purchase an international airline ticket again, or buy an international VCR or projector, it’s worth it! The file was assembled by Ken and it lists places to buy multisystem VCR’s and TV’s, video projectors, overhead projectors, 16 millimeter projectors, 220 volt 50 hertz equipment, and appliances for overseas. Also listed is some information on overseas shipping and a little information on airplane travel or travel agencies to call when traveling abroad. It must have taken me 45 minutes to copy and paste all this stuff into my Ecco Pro database so it would be available on my PalmPilot!!! (I finally gave up and lumped some of it together under the same item name.) But it’ll be well worth it. Get it by sending email to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the message:
get brigada sources-for-stuff

And the best part is . . . it’s absolutely free. Thanks Ken!

Okay – so I’ll admit we took some heat for featuring the item honoring Mother Teresa (last week’s item ” GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM CURRENT EVENTS”, which told of some of her amazing and humble accomplishments. But do try to keep in mind that we didn’t say we agreed with every piece of doctrine she held. At the same time, that doesn’t keep us from admiring the life she lived. Besides, out of over 6000 Brigada participants . . . . . . . . . only one person complained.

PLANS FOR GLOBAL MARCH FOR JESUS 1998
Have you heard about the Global Mach for Jesus 1998? The prayer theme will center on the persecuted church, focusing on the part of the God’s family who cannot celebrate Jesus openly on the streets. “DEMONSTRATE THE PASSION” is the slogan. Saturday, 30 May 1998 is the date. For more info, write 100572dot323atcompuservedotcom.

HOT LINKS – MORE THAN SAUSAGE, LESS THAN BRIGADA
Just when you thought you might be able to start doing more “clicking” and less “page-downing,” I’m afraid we’re comin’ up dry. Our attempt to learn how to make the “executive summary titles” click-able (last week’s item, OKAY — YOU READ THIS FAR — NOW HELP US IMPROVE THESE TITLES) has turned up some very informative responses (thanks to one and all who replied). They ranged from the simple (“My advice: Don’t do it”) to the very complex (Send two versions of Brigada Today, one in some special form called MIME [Hey — I’m all for silent drama too, but in email??? :-) ] and the other in plain text, like it is now).

My take on all this is that it would be cool, . . . and it might even save readers some time. But from what I’ve learned from our kind-hearted tutors this past week, it’s probably something we need to revisit in a year or so, if and when email standards have risen. According to those among us who are “in the know,” there are too many folks still accessing email from DOS machines or from proprietary email clients. Bottom line: There’s no way we could make the titles “clickable” for one and all. And to include all the extra formatting commands (which would become garbage for those without the special capability) seems to be a waste of time for those in the DOS/proprietary category. So we end up shooting ourselves in the foot!

One reader suggested doing an “Edit-Find” (ctrl-F in some email readers) for the numbered item you’d like to see… like search for the text string “3)” or “20)” — and include the parenthesis to decrease the likelihood that you’ll find more than one occurrence. Another reader said that if we wanted to click on the title, just read the web version that Bob Mayhew prepares faithfully every week at http://www.brigada.org. The titles have been hot there since he began the web version, back in our first few months of 1995. He usually has it up and running on the web just shortly after it’s emailed. Either way, thanks for the lesson on links!

WHAT ARE YOUR PASSIONS?
I have at least 3 great passions in life these days… a) Serving Christ (which includes all the prayer, worship and missions stuff), b) Building right relationships with my family and friends, and c) soccer. :-) For some reason, making good decisions about one or more of these passions is not all that easy at times. My buddy John (who is headed to Asia) just sent me a note from David Burns that included this story by Ken Canfield, in his book, 7 Secrets Of Effective Fathers. It’s a great story — and I hope it causes us to reexamine the priority that we’re all placing on that “right relationship” passion — especially as it relates to family. “It reminds me of a story from another Olympics held in France –the 1924 summer games in Paris. Bill Havens was selected to represent the United States that year in an event called Canadian singles. It was a canoeing event, a demonstration sport, in which the competitors sit in a high kneeling position and use a single paddle. Havens was good; in fact, everyone expected him to bring home the gold.

However, a few months before the Olympics, Havens learned that his wife was due to give birth sometime during the Games. He had a decision to make: the opportunity of a lifetime or . . .the opportunity of a lifetime. He made his decision. He stayed home. The team left for Paris without him. On August 1, 1924, his son Frank was born– four days after the Games.

Fast forward through all those summers when Bill Havens probably heard the results from every Olympic canoeing event and wondered if he’d made the right decision. But stop in 1952, the year the Summer Olympics were in Helsinki. Havens received a telegram from Helsinki that he surely wouldn’t have traded for any amount of gold. The telegram read: “Dear Dad. . .Thanks for waiting around for me to get born in 1924. I’m coming home with the gold medal you should have won.” It was signed, “Your loving son, Frank.” Frank Havens had just won the gold medal in the ten-thousand-meter Canadian singles canoeing event.”

Giving proper priority to our passion for right relationships (especially with family) will never be easy… but perhaps that means we ought to work all the harder to do just that! God bless your week!
(Thanks again to John and David for the great referral!)

DON’T FORGET PTWIII!
We’re a small mission agency . . . with only 9 people in our International Office in Louisville, KY. So when one of our “mobilization types” (Carole Dunlap, God love her!) asked this past week, “So what are we going to do about ‘Praying Through the Window III’?”, I puzzled over the answer for a moment. We all looked at one another across the conference table. We had been showing the videos for months. We had faithfully distributed the calendars, dutifully answered questions about how to get in touch with CIN, and generally promoted the idea from one state to another. But — we had forgotten to put together a plan for ourselves! Yikes. Woe be unto us if we get so busy mobilizing others that we forget to mobilize us! :-) So — for our office, it’ll be a simple plan. We’re going to meet each day at 12:45pm for 15 minutes to pray for the people groups of the day, following the outline in the brochure. How ’bout your organization or church? If you haven’t put together a plan yet, better hurry — you’ve only got until Wednesday!!! For more information on Praying Through the Window III, AD2000 has put a little known file on their web site — a WinWord summary (digest version) of the Praying through the Windows III Unreached Peoples book. Find it at http://www.ad2000.org by clicking on PTWIII tools. Perfect if you failed to order the book!

ONLY 9 MORE SHOPPING DAYS ‘TIL “PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW III”
… and for your last minute stocking stuffer, “TR” came up with just the tip. I checked it out myself and sure enough, AD2000 has put a little known file on their web site — a WinWord summary (digest version) of the Praying through the Windows III Unreached Peoples book! Find it at http://www.ad2000.org by clicking on PTWIII tools. As TR wrote, ” It is perfect for those who forgot to order books in time or can’t afford a large number. You have permission to photocopy as many as needed.” Have at it. I hope we all download it together so much that AD2000’s computers feel the pull of our combined FTP-ing! :-) Get ready for some hits, Dan Scribner!!! :-)

MOBILIZING YOUR CITY TO PRAY THROUGH THE WINDOW
A group of churches and ministries in the Denver, Colorado area have decided to ride the wave of momentum associated with Praying Through the Window III this October by sponsoring a series of Concerts of Prayer. The last four Friday’s in October they will host a cross-denominational Concert of Prayer focusing on the unreached peoples targeted that week in Praying Through the Window III.

Here is the real pay day…if you are out there thinking, “I’d really like to do that but I’m not sure how to pull off a Concert of Prayer or what exactly to pray for…”, do we have a deal for you?! Kingdom Building Ministries, one of the participating organizations, is prepared to email you tips on leading a concert of prayer and the specific outline (including prayer requests) the group in Denver will be using each week. Just send an email message to KBM LaborersatKBMdotorg and ask for Concert of Prayer Tips/Prayer Outline. You can’t lose. And the price is right. :-) Be sure to tell ’em Brigada sent you. They’ll probably throw in a few free airline tickets to accompany one of their prayer journey teams! Okay. So I’m kidding about the airline tickets. But the outlines are for real. :-)

PIT-STOP RALEIGH RALLIES… PIT-STOP TULSA TALLIES
“This material is exactly what our church needed to launch an adopt-a-people program!” That’s what one participant reported after having attended Pit-Stop Raleigh this past weekend at Peace College in Raleigh, NC. Hosted by the Cary Christian Church, the Pit-Stop represented a landmark event in PACE Project history, in which a local church handled 99% of the set-up and arrangements for a program designed to help other local churches assume all the more responsibility in finishing the task. “Exciting,” responded one participant, whose local church ended up mapping out its basic preliminary strategy through the next 15 years!!! Thanks to Cary for a job well done! Now . . . saddle up for Tulsa, where Pit-Stop Tulsa will prepare all the more congregations and cooperating agencies! Register through the Envision ’97 office at wbirney11ataoldotcom (800-972-1137 or fax 316-668-5220) for the event that is scheduled for Oct. 10th, 8am – 4pm in the Doubletree Hotel across from the Tulsa Convention Center, downtown. Cost is minimal… $15, which includes a planning notebook and diskette. (These materials aren’t mailed out to non-attenders, but will be placed on the Internet at http://www.brigada.org/pace in the “Tools and Resources” section as a download.) For full details, including a schedule, see the web site (above) or write a message to hubatxcdotorg with only these words in the text of the message:

WHERE TO BUY ALMOST ANYTHING . . .
…. well, almost anything that missionaries have to buy, that is! Ken has shared his list of places to buy PAL VCR’s, PAL TV’s, multisystem VCR’s and TV’s, PAL and multisystem video projectors, overhead projectors, 16 millimeter projectors, 220 volt 50 hertz equipment, appliances for overseas, information on overseas shipping and a little information on airplane travel or travel agencies to call when traveling abroad. I’m tellin’ ya… this is a jewel of a file that would be a great starter for anybody’s address book. How long will it take me to copy and paste all this stuff into my Ecco Pro/PalmPilot file!!! :-) But it’ll be well worth it. Get it by sending email to [you guessed it! :-) hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the message:

“THEY HAVE MY LANGUAGE”
So where do you turn when you want books, videos, tracts, etc in different languages? One resource you can contact is

PO Box 301
Ephrata Pa 17522,
tel. 717-738-0582
email mlminfoatmultilanguagedotcom
website http://www.multilanguage.com

They have material (including Scriptures — either the complete Bible or NT or sometimes just portions, depending on how much has been translated) in about 100 languages ranging from Africaans to Yoruba to others like Croatian- Laotian-Romanian, Twi, Urdu, etc. That doesn’t include the hundreds of languages that they have available in the JESUS video. Says one very satisfied Brigada Today reader, “Its great to hand a catalog to someone and have them respond with ‘They have MY language!'” Funny that Shirley sent this item early last week and within 48 hours, I had already passed it on to a telephone inquiry in our office wanting scriptures in a foreign language! So . . . be sure to add Multilanguage Media to your address book for that next inquiry!

FOR YOUR FINELY FOCUSED FAR-FLUNG FARSI FRIENDS
The Gospels of Matthew and Mark in the Farsi language are now edited and ready for distribution. The Gospel of Matthew is a 3-tape set ($9) and the Gospel of Mark is a 2 tape set ($7). Sets of ten or more are reduced to $5.50 each for Matthew and $4.00 each for the Gospel of Mark. According to one source, these sets come with beautiful cassette labels that have titles and information all in Farsi. Audio Scripture Ministries http://millennianet.com/asm/ has gone on record (pun intended) saying that this recording is exceptionally well done. They’re trying to finish the Gospel in three weeks and the entire NT by January of next year. Bravo, Audio Scriptures! Keep it up!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM CURRENT EVENTS
With the homegoing of Mother Teresa last week much of the world attention is focused on India. She and her disciples have so far rescued 52,000 sick and dying destitutes from the streets. Teresa, by her service in the name of Christ, made more positive impact on Indians than any other Christian in this century. Sister Nirmala will succeed her as Mother. Hers is just one of 100s of indigenous Indian mission agencies reaching out with Christ’s love to both the poor and the unreached peoples in India. Many of these missions have banded together to form the India Missions Association which works to share information and strategy for the evangelization of India.
(Source: INDIA MAIL, Chennai, India September 8, 1997. INDIA MAIL is a weekly internet mail edited by IMA. http://www.ad2000.org/ima/overview.htm
Global Glimpse is compiled each week by John Hanna, who wears an ever-so-small earring at Caleb Project, Littleton, CO. :-) Hm. Generation X. :-)

————————————–

WATCH FOR ATTACHED “.DOC” FILES!
The word on the street is that a message with subject line, “for your perusal” has an attached WinWord file with a WinWord virus. Note that you can never get viruses from email (so disregard all the myths like “AOL Gold” and zillions of others) — but if you double click on an attached file with a “.doc” extension, it just might have a WinWord virus built in! So — bottom line — don’t ever read attachments you didn’t request… especially if they have anything other than “.txt” extensions. For extra insurance, upgrade to Office ’97 and make sure you go to “Tools-Options-General” and check “Macro Virus Protection” (ie., be sure there’s an X in front of it). And . . . please, please don’t start another round of 6 zillions emails warning all your friends and neighbors. Remember — the virus is the fact that we waste all the Internet bandwidth just talking about the possibility that there might be a virus! :-)

HE’S GOT A PERSECUTION COMPLEX!
… in a matter of speaking. Because he’s looking for every web site and reference work on persecution! He wants anything that will help him keep up with the news about persecuted Christians and Christian groups throughout the world. Says Joel, “It is my desire to keep them in prayer and to be relevant to their needs I need information about them.” Makes sense! Email joeldraperatworldnetdotattdotnet today with your referral, reference, or URL. He’ll compile them an report back to us here in two weeks.

YAGISP – “YET ANOTHER GLOBAL INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER”
:-) But hey, if you’re fed up with your current Internet Service Provider (for some reason) :-) then maybe you’d like to try iPass — http://www.ipass.com. They’ve put together a global internet roaming system working with over 122 Internet Service Providers (ISP) through a local telephone call from more than 1100 points of presence in more than 750 cities and 150 countries worldwide. Registration through iPass allows local access through any of the participating ISPs. Now if I can just remember to put the “P” in upper case and lower the “i” !!! (Try typing that last sentence in WinWord ’97! You’ve literally got to go to Tools-Autocorrect to scroll down and find the line that turns “i” into “I” — or else it keeps upper casing the “i” into “I” whether you want it to or not! When will these machines automatically know what we want instead of what they think we want! :-) ) Thanks for the tip, Dave! Now suppose you wanted to shop around even more for a great global ISP? Well you’re in luck. David scribeatgoodviewsdotcomdotau has agreed to collect a list! So — send your favorite global ISP (ie., an Internet Service Provider) to David and he’ll compile the list and report back here in a couple of weeks. Be sure to give him feedback on the “roaming” services’ effectiveness of access from multiple sites/countries — (or lack thereof)!

EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT MUSLIMS
Have you heard about the eight-week Institute of Islamic Studies (IIS) to be held at Asia Pacific Theological Seminary (APTS) in Baguio, Philippines from April 20-June 12, 1998? Its primary goal is to train national leaders for ministry to Muslims. Many students will come from Asian nations, but it is open to all with an interest in this area of ministry. The roster of profs sounds like a “most wanted” list for Muslim experts! Dr. Phil Parshall, Dr. Robert Douglas, Dr. Don McCurry and Warren Chastain, all of whom have authored significant works in this area and taught at the Zwemer Institute and/or Fuller Seminary. They’ll also have missionaries involved with ministry to Muslims. The cost for a single student covering the full eight-weeks of instruction, room and board, textbooks and materials is only $700. Couples can also be accommodated. Up to nine units of academic credit are available from APTS at additional cost ($15/credit hour plus misc. fees) and can be applied toward their M.A. in Missions or transferred to another institution (students wishing to do this should consult with their own school). To receive a brochure or further information contact APTS at aptsatxcdotorg. Now why didn’t I plan this thing. A first-rate training program . . . and all I get to do is report on it!

OKAY – YOU READ THIS FAR – NOW HELP US IMPROVE THESE TITLES
Paul wants us to make these titles “hot,” so that readers can simply click on them to bounce down to the precise location in the email where they begin. Can anyone email me a brief explanation about how that technology works? Does it make the links visible to every email client (including AOL, Cserve, etc.)? Can we use it out of Eudora Pro or would we have to use Netscape’s Communicator client? Help!!! Please write DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg with the answers… Inquiring readers want to click… not “pgdn”!!! :-) Thanks.

NEW RESTRICTIONS IN RUSSIA
Mark Elliott reported this past week that on September 19, the Russian Duma approved a law, “On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Associations,” by a vote of 358 to 6, with one fourth of representatives abstaining. Apparently President Yeltsin has already approved the wording of this draft, and it is expected that the upper house of the Russian legislature, the Federation Council, will quickly approve the legislation.

According to Mark, if implemented and enforced as written it will recognize a privileged few “traditional” religions as acceptable, while limiting less favored “religious groups.” Fifteen years of state registration on good behavior would be required before a “religious group” could aspire to become a “religious organization.” Mark wrote, “It is unclear at this moment how seriously the expatriate missionary community will be affected. But in one strongly Communist provincial city a missionary was told by local officials earlier this week that if the law passed his family would have 24 hours to leave the country.” Yikes. Mark went on to write that “If the new law is implemented and enforced as written it could lead to the largest expulsion of missionaries from a single country since China after 1949.” Should we start praying yet?

A BRIGADA EXCLUSIVE: TWO BOOKS BY JOHN PIPER FOR $10.00!
Wow! These people are wild. They seem serious about wanting zillions to have these books!!! (I just hope they know what they’re getting into! :-) ) So — the least we can do is order them! :-) You see, for a limited time, Desiring God Ministries is offering John Piper’s book, Let The Nations Be Glad: The Supremacy Of God In Missions, and his newest book, A Hunger For God: Desiring God Through Fasting And Prayer to all Brigada subscribers for $10.00 (shipping included anywhere in the world!). I told you these people were wild. There’s something about that kind of attitude… the one that says, “shipped anywhere in the world”… that says something very clearly about their goals. It speaks volumes, in fact. And get this… they wrote Brigada this week… “And if you can’t afford the $10.00, we’ll give them to you for free! We’re making these books available as inexpensively as we can because we want you to get excited with us about spreading a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of ALL PEOPLES.” Bookstores sell NATIONS for $12.99 and HUNGER for $10.99. So for $10.00 you can buy $24.00 worth of books (about 60% off!). You won’t find this offer anywhere else! Call DGM toll free (in the USA … or using Net2Phone or equivalent) at 1-888-346-4700 to order using Visa, MasterCard or Discover Card, or send a check to Desiring God Ministries, 720 13th Ave. So., Minneapolis, MN, 55415. Or, you can e-mail them at DGMinistryataoldotcom or visit their web page at http://www.desiringgod.org. Remember — you’ve got to tell them you saw the offer on Brigada. This offer is good through September 30, 1997, only. So if you’re outside the USA and you have to use air mail, better get it out the door today! :-)

If so, you probably thought, “Now how in the world did they capture all those web sites on video???!!!” You were right. The product is a CD not a video. But anyway, that makes it all the better!!! :-) So . . . how ’bout reading last week’s description again, but this time think about it as a CD!!! “Have you seen the AD2000 Adoption Guidance Program and Missions Resource Kit? The price is right… AD2000 is selling them for $5 (for quantities of 1-4, $4 for quantities of 4-10, $3 for 11-15 and 2$ for 16 and above)! Can’t beat that! Get yours from the

The word on the street is that it’s a winner. The rumor is that Yemen, a People Apart is 14 minutes of absolutely beautiful video footage and good commentary on the land, it’s people, and the spiritual situation. If you want to see a great case study, apparently this one is tops. US$13 from Arab World Ministry, P.O. Box 96, Upper Darby, PA 19082. ANTIOCH GATHERING OUTCOME: A NEW BUSINESS & MISSIONS CONFERENCE?
Did you catch wind of the Antioch Gathering last month in Phoenix? One delegate wrote… “A lot of interaction, networking, great workshops, sessions and worship. One very productive workshop was the business and mission track. A number of concrete ideas are being developed from the folks who took part in it.” One of them is to explore the possibility of establishing a business/mission conference on Brigada. The purpose of such a conference would be to network people who are interested in how business and missions can interact. It would include such topics as setting up businesses both at home and on the field as a way to support missions efforts, entrepreneurial business/missions (establishing businesses on the field to provide jobs and income), tentmaking, community development, and any other topic that relates to business and missions. Right now they want to see if there is enough interest to start a conference so if you are interested, let them know. Drop a quick email to Jack Straus at jbsmiatixdotnetcomdotcom. Just say something like, “Yes, I’m interested.” And if you want to add some ideas, let him hear about those too.”

ARABIC, FARSI, MALAYALAM & CHINESE SCRIPTURES GO ONLINE

IBS wrote this past week, “As part of our commitment to provide Scriptures, the International Bible Society (IBS) has added the complete Arabic Bible, the Farsi New Testament, the Malayalam New Testament and Chinese Scriptures to it’s Internet services.” Visit the International Bible Society online at http://www.gospelcom.net/ibs or email them at ibsatgospelcomdotnet and discover how the light of God’s Word is reaching to the dark corners of the world.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE ON YALTA
Yalta, a Ukrainian port on the Black Sea, is home to about 1000 Muslim Tatars. Each May 18 they march to commemorate the calamitous 1944 forced deportation of thousands of Tatars. But this year a Ukrainian Missionary who is a nephew of two KGB officers serving at the time of the mass relocation addressed the crowd and asked for their forgiveness for what had happened. The response has been very positive and the missionaries have been invited to start Bible discussion groups among Tatars who were touched by this show of concern for a dark chapter in their history.

HELP BUILD A STORYBOOK
Catherine Shuker 106447dot3070atcompuservedotcom needs stories and object lessons that demonstrate inequality — like the difference between the “haves” and “have nots” — for a series of lessons she is presenting in schools. She’s featuring New Zealanders who work in Brazil with street kids and she’d like to find stories that are really “way out” and can captivate and motivate a bunch of bored highschool/primary school kids and get them focused on the world outside of their own. According to Catherine, these kids aren’t church kids and she’s not allowed to “overtly” preach to them! So… if you’ve got an idea for a story, comparison, drama, skit, illustration, audiovisual, whatever — if it can help Catherine communicate the need — she wants it. And, in the end, she’ll tie up the whole bundle of stories for us here at Brigada so you can “get” the results. She’s promised you’ll hear back from her via Brigada Today in a couple of weeks with information on how to get her file.

… AND HELP PUT TOGETHER A SCRIPT LIST

(You’ll hear about it here on Brigada, along with instructions on how to get it.)

GREAT NEW MINI-VIDEO FOR YOUR SUNDAY MORNING!
Well, here’s the latest new mini-video you can use on Sunday morning to reach deep into the hearts and souls of your church or small group. And the price is right. “Kids These Days” is a seven-minute video focusing on the tragic plight of the world’s children. There has been much written lately about the 4/14 window, children between the ages of 4 and 14, who are highly susceptible to the best and worst in today’s world. In too many places, the 4/14 window is dirty, broken, and often seems painted shut. I hope this video serves as an eye opener, a discussion starter, a motivator-especially for the youth and young adults in the U.S. who have so much to offer in the name of Jesus. “Kids These Days” can be ordered for $9.95 (plus $3.00 shipping and handling) from Good News Productions, International by calling 1-800-457-GNPI (4674). Also included on the tape is the 50-second “Isaiah 61,” a simple call “to be more like Jesus.” For more info, email gnpiatxcdotorg or fax 417-782-3999.

WANNA RUN AN AD TO HELP A MISSION AGENCY?
CSC hopes you do. Christians Sharing Christ (CSC) of Ball, Louisiana, 318-640-4900, Fishvilleataoldotcom, is a non-denominational mission agency asking you to consider placing the following ad in the classified ad section of your local American newspaper:

“16 MM PROJECTORS WANTED! If you have a 16 MM projector at your home, office, or church which is gathering dust and you want them active again winning others to Jesus, then donate your projectors by delivering them to (the name, address and phone number of your local church).”

CSC claims that if you’ll agree to spend a few dollars to run this ad for about a week, it will generate the donation of many projectors to this ministry. Now… I can’t personally verify the accuracy of their theories, but since I’m a sucker for creativity :-) I thought it at least important to let you hear their approach. If you have questions, email them directly if you’re willing to place this ad. CSC has said they would pay for all shipping costs to Ball, Louisiana. They reportedly have film teams working in 17 nations around the world right now showing evangelistic films in open air forums as a way of planting churches in places where there are none. They say there are many other workers who would like to show films but they do not have the projectors. So — if you’re interested in this innovative approach, contact them directly.
