GUESS YOU NEED AN ADDRESS! (“BE A WRITING PARTNER”)
lighting the way Sorry to all those who wanted to contact Turkish World Outreach to “be a writing partner” (see last week’s Brigada Today). Truth is, I just didn’t remember to give you the email address!!! :-( Oh well — that’s one way to insure that we get lots of mail! :-) Try UGDM79A@prodigy.com or write TWO, 508 Fruitvale Ct., Grand Junction, CO 81504 or telephone (970) 434-1942.

FOR THE JP2000 RECORDS…
One report that came back this past week pointed to a faulty statistic in Taiwan. Apparently the number of Taiwan Uyghers are reported to number 26,000 in Taiwan… whereas the researchers from one recent JP2000 trip found only 200 or so!!! Rats. So… the reporter suggested, tongue in cheek, “…This could be one of those fantastic reports! [Our mission] went to Taiwan where JP2000 reported 26,000 Muslim Uyghers without access to Christ and without hope. In just one day, after one visit to the Chief Mosque of Taiwan, the [our mission] left only 200 Uyghers who still did not believe. That has to be better than most statistics! 25,800 reached in a day!” Got any other testimonies from JP2000 projects? (Maybe some pro, some not so pro???)

INCOMING: RESEARCH ON RETURNING SHORT-TERM MISSIONARIES
Neil SEASTEP@GOLDEN.NET is doing research on returning short-term missionaries. If you’re interested in a copy, email Neil today!
note (Note: He probably won’t have the research completed ’til spring ’99.)

EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES FOR MISSIONARY KIDS… ON THEIR WAY!
Brett brett@cyberhigh.org wrote to clue us in on the recent MK education conference in Dallas, hosted by Wycliffe. Evidently it was a complete success. Over 14 international mission agencies and schools attended (SIM,SHARE,SEND, Black Forest Academy, MAF, etc). Brett wrote, “We had a great time as we discussed current trends, needs, obstacles, resources, and action plans as they related to the issue of MK education with a special focus on technology as a source of help.” A team of five attendees [including Brett] was established to act as the liaison between the other 10 or 11 attendees in disseminating, assessing, and providing updates on resources which may help meet the many education needs of MK’s. The main vehicle for accomplishing our purpose will be a web-page [as of yet not active]. According to Brett, “A member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) said that ACSI would help to financially sponsor the web-page setup costs—Thank you ACSI.” (Brett, be sure to let us know as you open this service up!) Two demonstrations were given to show the attendees what is already available in the arena of technological resources. CyberHigh (grades 7-12) and the Potter’s School(math tutoring) both demonstrated how on-line education could help to meet the needs of both MK’s and MK schools. And by the way, CyberHigh has changed its name to NorthStar Academy so as to avoid confusion between itself and the Cyber High School of California. For more info., email Brett directly.

WE GOOFED!
lighting the way In last week’s item, “VIDEOS FROM CB INTERNATIONAL,” we mistakenly confused CBI and CBFM. We’d better keep our initials straight! CBInternational, which formerly went by the name, “Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society,” is based in Wheaton, Illinois and is related to the CBAmerica churches. But the videos are being offered by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship mission agency that relates to many Southern Baptist churches. Pardon our typo! Thanks to Michael Jaffarian MichaelDawna@compuserve.com and many others who wrote in to help us spot this error.

GROW IN YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE ETHNIC HARVEST
In the interest of encouraging ministry to the many ethnic groups around us, World Relief in the Bay Area is sponsoring an “Ethnic Harvest Briefing.” (See November 28 issue of Brigada Today.) Organizers now have speakers selected and have launched a web site at http://expage.com/page/ethnicharvest. For more information write Rich Sexton, World Relief at rsexton@gte.net.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
world globe Millions of Christians have started praying for Muslims worldwide beginning this past week, on January 1 1998. The “Prayer for the Islamic world” project which started in Australia encourages Christians all over the world to participate individually, as a family, or church group. Youth With a Mission published the printed prayer guides which are also available by e-mail. Around 10 million Christians took part in this global prayer initiative last year, many of whom also fasted. Insiders describe the resulting reports of God’s move among Muslims as ‘phenomenal’.
(Source: DAWN Friday Fax, 97-50. To receive “30 Days’ prayer for Muslims” by e-mail send a message to with

as the message’s text.)
Global Glimpse is compiled each week by John Hanna, Caleb Project, Littleton, CO.

note (Note: Please be in prayer for John and Gwen’s new little baby “Jori” [short for Jordan], born 8 weeks premature. There are positive signs, but prayer is still needed! She has a blood clot below her left kidney, a failed adrenal gland, and a feverish Mom. Please pray!)

NO, THE INTERNET DOESN’T NEED A “THOROUGH CLEANING”
In case anyone asks (or emails you), the answer is ‘no’, the Internet doesn’t need to close down on Feb. 27th for a thorough cleaning. It’s just another piece of Internet “legend” that forms into its own kind of self-replicating “virus” to soak up additional bandwidth.

LOCAL CHURCH FACILITATOR TRAINING
Are you a local church leader wanting training in developing strategic five-year missions plans? If so, Bruce Camp’s program might be for you! This training, which uses the Global Access Planner (GAP), is designed to alert churches to the latest thinking regarding what a local church can do in missions as well as will assist a church in developing their own game plan. Missions pastor Mel Loucks commented after participating in a GAP training session: “It was superb. It gave me a practical tool which I can use immediately to help my church understand how we must change our approach in missions. Additionally, the GAP materials provided me with a way to develop a five-year plan that is unique for my church.” The next training day is set for Friday, January 30, from 9:00 to 5:00 in Rockford, IL. The cost is $65 which includes all materials and lunch. For more information, look at the EFCM website http://www.efcm.org under Local Church Resources – Material Resources or contact Bruce Camp by phone (714-248-1236) or e-mail bkcamp@compuserve.com.

WEB-WATCH
WebWatch Check out the links at http://www.domini.org/express/metrofly/miss.htm, where you can read newspapers from just about any country in the world, convert currency, etc. The site is sponsored by a travel agency — one that has found a great way to offer a free service on the web while promoting its own fares! Bravo!

MED STUDENTS WITH LOANS READ THIS!
Ever hear of Project MedSend? If you’re a med student with accumulating loans… and if you’re considering medical missions as a career, then MedSend might be “just what the doctor ordered!” Read all about it at http://www.sim.org/medsend/index.html. They’ve done 39 grants in 4 years. Cool. thumbs-up

WE TAKE THE HEAT FOR SMILES
lighting the way Rats. rats face Some readers didn’t want to read about smiles (last week’s, “EXPANDED SMILIE DICTIONARY”). One even asked how in the world we decide what to put in and what not to put in Brigada Today. Honestly??? A lot depends on the quality of the stuff we can find during the intervening weekdays. So… if you see another smiley dictionary sometime in the near future, better help us find some great material! So… for all those who didn’t like the smiley dictionary, become a great source for Brigada and … we’ll all be smiling real smiles in gratitude! :-)

OUT OF THE COUNTRY, OUT OF TOUCH???
Nobody can say for sure. But in my overseas travels during the next two weeks, if I can’t get access to the Internet, Brigada Today might be silent for the first time in nearly two years! So… if you don’t get a copy during the next two weekends, we’ll find out if you really missed us when we come back with the Jan. 23rd issue. If we can get access, we’ll do our best to send from wherever we happen to be logged on. Thanks for understanding!
Doug

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us! See the note above if you’d like to submit items for Brigada Today. Thanks for understanding. Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.
