RESURRECTION “GREETINGS” UNITE!
In much of the world, it’s fashionable to give some kind of resurrection greeting on Easter Sunday morning. For example, in Romanian, one might say, “Cristos a inviat! – Adevarat a inviat!” Got one for your language? Catalin Popa popaatusadotnet is willing to compile them all and get us a report. We’ll TRY to have it all done by next Saturday and get it out to you (in next week’s Brigada Today) in time to use at your Easter Sunday sunrise service — maybe by midnight Eastern Standard time this Saturday night. (That’ll cut it close for use in Europe!) So don’t delay! Send them to popaatusadotnet today!

BRIGHT IDEAS FOR TEACHING MISSIONS TO TOTS
light bulb Wycliffe Bible Translators is pleased to present Bright Ideas! Notebook 3 for Preschoolers, ages 2-5 years old. Ten active lessons teach the rock-bottom basics of missions. Unlike other resources, you won’t teach a lesson and then put it on the shelf. Most are reusable on a weekly basis to teach and re-teach God’s heart for the world. Like Notebooks 1 for Teens, and Notebook 2 for Grades 1-6, lessons not only emphasize how and why missions are done, but also that kids can do missions right now. Learning is fun with ‘redeemed nursery rhymes,’ coloring pages, obstacle courses, treasure hunts, finger plays, matching games and tightrope walking. Send $14 check or money order to

IN CASE YOU’RE HEADED ON A SHORT-TERM TO ASIA
Don’t forget about training options with Commit Ministries. From their Hawaii facility, they’re perfectly located to handle pre-field or debriefing. An average stay is about two days and the cost is only $139, which includes tuition & related materials, food, lodging, and ground transportation. COMMIT is also a licensed travel agent working with wholesalers to provide the best possible fare for your team needs. Contact Greg or Mona Crawford at commitatjunodotcom

NEED A GRAPHIC OF YOUR NATION’S FLAG?
A super volunteer with our mission organization here in Louisville found a great flag site at http://fotw.digibel.be/flags for all the flags in the world. Great site.

————————————–

DOWNLOAD FREE LIST OF 30 PRAYER REQUESTS FOR BRIGADA
Thanks to one church’s prayer ministry, we now have a handy-dandy prayer guide for the Brigada family of networks. It includes a daily prayer guide for 30 consecutive days of prayer for Brigada.

————————————–

CONFERENCE FOR THOSE MINISTERING TO INTERNATINAL STUDENTS
“Compelled to Complete the Task” will feature some of the foremost leaders in international student ministry today. For a brochure with complete conference information, write NSC98atisionlinedotorg. Conference dates are June 18-24, 1998.

————————————–

THREE WEST AFRICAN MEDIA WORKSHOPS

NOW YOU CAN “FINISH” YOUR MISSIONS EDUCATION (IN FINLAND!)
As of Jan. 27, 1998 there is a new Bible school located in Central Finland. Northern Praise International Christian College will finish its first semester April 12. They emphasize missions and job training for both ministry and secular work. This past March, they did their first missions field trip, traveling about 3,000K through Russian Karelia. They are also planning outreaches to northern Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Second semester begins April 16.

GET THIS CASE STUDY OF A CD-ROM MISSIONS REPORT
cd-rom Looking for a good way to keep your church body aware of your missions efforts? With some 53 missionaries and 3,000 family units in their church, one church had a hard time keeping track of everybody. So they burned their own CD with a great deal of information from their missions database, including photographs, testimonies of salvation and calling to the field, addresses, e-mail links, prayer requests from the last year, and information about the country they serve. They even threw in 40 minutes of video on the CD. Some was “home movie” quality – footage taken by folks on trips they have gone on. Others were professional quality productions that they have developed and used to keep their body aware of some of the partnerships we’ve formed. They give copies of the CD to the missionaries they support for use in promotion among other churches and individuals. Get a copy as a case study . . . by writing to drfletcheratnwbiblechurchdotorg (remember not to send credit card info. over the open Internet). (To off-set production and shipping and handling, they’re asking $10 for the CD.)

————————————–

GOT A LEAD ON HISPANIC PROTESTANT NUMBERS?
John Conaway of CCMI in Colorado Springs would like to know. He’s looking for reliable data on the number of U.S. Hispanic Protestants. Detailed demographic data is available on the Hispanic population in the U.S., as well as on U.S. Christians of various denominations. But so far, he hasn’t found a source that lists the numbers of Hispanic believers, especially by location. If you have a source for such information, it would be of great value to a number of ministries who have interests in the U.S. Hispanic community. John’s e-mail address is jcharconataoldotcom. Any information gleaned will be shared through Brigada Today.

————————————–

REMEMBER OUR REFERENCE TO LANUGAGE FORCE???
lighting the way A ton of people wrote in to say “don’t bother.” Apparently it’s a very BASIC translation package, still requiring lots of effort from the user. One guy said that out of 300 words, he only got back 25 useful ones in Romanian! Another was quite displeased with the Portuguese output. However, the latter recommended Globalink as a translator. How ’bout that, gang? Any thoughts and feelings on it?

————————————–

WANT TO SEE WHAT ONE ON-SITE WORKER DOES WITH A DIGITAL CAMERA?
Check out http://SharpWebPage.com/Haridwar/IndiaKM1.html for ideas. We double-checked to make sure it wouldn’t get him in trouble to cite his site as a sight for your sites.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM ASIA
world globe More than 6,000 Bibles in more than 20 languages were sold and 3,000 people enrolled in a Bible correspondence course during a book fair — the largest in southern Asia — in a limited-access country. One man, who saw a newspaper ad for the book fair, rode a bus and train for 20 hours to get a copy of the Bible. A Hindu holy man took copies of the Bible in 20 languages, explaining that people came to his ashram from all over the country and that he did not want even one person to miss the opportunity of reading the Bible in their own heart language. Television news crews broadcast images of the former president of the country visiting the booth and accepting a copy of the “Jesus” video.

DECOLONIZATION DESCRIBED
Got an opinion or story on decolonization? Dennis would like to know. He has to lead a workshop on “The Results of Decolonization Within a Country Upon Its Culture and Mission Endeavors” at an upcoming convention. He writes, “What limited experience I have is in South Africa which is not strictly ‘Decolonization,’ but with the shift in power, we are probably experiencing many of the same things. This subject should be important to everyone who is dealing with a culture that is moving from some kind of dependence to a more independent state.” Any anecdotes, advice, or suggestions could be sent to messimeratcccbdotedu. He’ll do a summary report here for Brigada Today.

————————————–

VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED TO WRITE MUSLIMS
Steve TWOsteveatonlinecoldotcom still needs several volunteers to write 10 gospel letters per month to Muslims. He’ll provide Turkish letters, a translation, addresses, and instructions. Volunteers are asked to provide the postage and envelopes to send their ten letters monthly. Postage is 60 cents per letter (from the US). Turkish World Outreach is the agency.

————————————–

UPDATE ON DEPUTATION ORGANIZER
lighting the way Hey — if you’d like an upgrade on that Deputation Organizer, see BKCLONCHataoldotcom. He’s handling it directly now. Brigada probably should stay out of the “direct” software distribution business. :-)

————————————–

ARE YOU SENDING SHORT TERM TEAMS?
Would you like to strengthen your preparation and re-entry programs? This Spring’s final Short Term Missions Leaders Training Seminar presented by Mission Training International will be held April 23-26 and hosted by Xenos Christian Fellowship, Columbus, and the Central Ohio Missions Coalition. This Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon program has been recently held in Colorado, Oklahoma and Hawaii and has brought together church and mission agency STM leaders walking through a 20+ hour experiential curriculum which can be either used as presented or integrated into an existing program. (No, they do not send out copies of the program without your going through it.) The cost for tuition and materials is $179 and the host church will assist with housing and meals. For more info contact Ray Howard at MTI – 800 896-3710 or MInternataoldotcom.

NEW EDUCATION FOUNDATION REQUESTS MISSIONARY HELP
A newly created organization has been formed to develop customized curricula for Christian education settings. The International Christian Education Foundation, known as ICEF, is writing a document to organize Christian education around commonly accepted standards. These standards will then be used to develop curricula for use by missionaries, by nationals (in native language translations), by private schools, and by other Christian organizations. The standards will be grouped around specific categories and placed into various levels, such as early childhood, children, adolescents, and adults. ICEF has a short questionnaire to send out to interested individuals, especially missionaries, for their opinions on what they consider to be the most important people, events, doctrines, and concepts from the Bible. ICEF also wants to publish accounts that exemplify the Christian story in countries other than the U.S., such as how a given political event affected Christian witnessing, how missionary families bridge the cultural gap through Christ, etc. If you would like to receive this questionnaire or more information about ICEF, write to slwynnatiquestdotnet. ICEF’s web site is currently under development, and will be available soon.

NEED ENCRYPTED EMAIL?
[WARNING: Technical info. follows!]
PGP 5.5.3i, the latest freeware for international users (i.e. users outside of USA and Canada) is now available for Macintosh, Windows95 and WindowsNT http://www.pgpi.com/download/. Users in the USA or Canada should download PGP 5.0 from http://web.mit.edu/network/pgp.html or PGP 5.5.3 from http://www.nai.com/products/security/pgpfreeware.asp. PGP 5.0 from M.I.T. can still use keys from older versions of PGP and is therefore more compatible when communicating with those who have not yet upgraded to PGP 5.x. In contrast, the freeware version of PGP 5.5.3 (for USA users) does not support the older key formats but PGP 5.5.3i does In general, you should use PGP 5.0/5.5 if you’re in the US, and PGP 5.0i/5.5i if you’re not. Thanks Rod!

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.

FROM THE MARKETING DEPARTMENT
(Like there really IS one!) Thanks to all those who put out the word for Brigada. We’ve now shot up above 7000 recipients thanks to your work at spreading the news! Brigada still remains a free service for hundreds of international recipients from the Amazon to Australia, from the jungles and grasslands of Africa to the tropical shores of the Pacific! Thanks for making Brigada’s growth a reality!

————————————–

FUN BRIGADA-FACTS TO KNOW AND TELL
In the old days, when boys stood on street corners yelling, “Extra! Extra! Read all about it!” it might take several DAYS to distribute 7000 newspapers. Then cam MAFxc. As of six months ago, they could deliver about 2000 Brigada Todays per hour. Pretty slick when you stop to think about it. Well, now, straight from the Tech. Research Department :-) the latest stats are — 14 minutes and 7 seconds to deliver all 7000 copies!!! Yikes… gulp that’s over 8 copies per SECOND! I can’t even talk that fast, let alone send global messaging!!! :-) If you appreciate these MAFxc guys, please DON’T write them. It’ll only make for more work for them! :-) (Keep in mind that that’s 14 minutes to be delivered to the various spines of the Internet. If your mail is delivered via slower machines, actual results might vary!)

————————————–

LEARN HOW TO LEARN, LOVE, AND LINK FOR YOUR PEOPLE GROUP
Catch your JAG training (Just an Advocate for God) at Caleb Project’s Advocacy Training Seminar May 7-9 in Denver Colorado. For more info. write trainingatcprojectdotcom or check http://www.calebproject.org/rats.htm when you get a spare moment. And . . . okay . . . I might as well confess… I made up the JAG part. :-)

————————————–

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER
For the fourth year, The National Prayer Committee will sponsor THE NATIONALLY BROADCAST CONCERT OF PRAYER, May 7, 1998, 7-10pm (CST), this time at Prestonwood Baptist Church, Dallas, TX. Focused on national revival, this unforgettable evening will be covered live by Moody Broadcasting (312-329-4300) and WCFC TV (312-433-3838) satellites feed broadcasters nationwide. Local Churches are asked to gather with each other for this national prayer meeting. Dominion Sky Angel (941-403-9154) an all-Christian-programming 18″ DDS service (less than $500) will carry it. Available globally on the Internet http://www.gospelmedia.com/, allowing missionaries and others to join the meeting. Info: call 612-853-8461; e-mail 102370dot1312atcompuservedotcom. Now THERE’s a good use for the Internet! :-)

————————————–

IN SEARCH OF PATTERSON’S TREASURES?
Have you always heard about the TEE materials used so successfully by George Patterson in Honduras? Bet you’ve always wanted to track them down and give them a try where YOU live, right? Well — what are you waiting for? In one closed Asian country, workers led by God using Patterson’s materials were able to start 23 churches and leave them functioning with their own leaders after only 3 years! Now you can use the very same materials! Included are a Church Planting Guide, a Pastoral Trainer’s Manual, a Student Activity Guide (which is the activity based pastoral training curriculum) and 62 booklets to mobilize new and more experienced workers in all pastoral activities. Patterson established about 100 churches over 20 years. ‘Course, results might vary; read the prospectus. :-) Order yours today from Missionary Training Service, an organization dedicated to the training of workers for the unevangelized world. A complete set for US$95 (plus US$25 for sea mail or US$50 for airmail worldwide).

note [Note: If your order comes to more than US$75.00 including postage, they need you to make out more than one check (payable to the Missionary Training Service). Something about money laundering. :-) Just joking. Actually it saves them some bank fees.] Write them at 18 Aston Way, Oswestry, Shropshire SY11 2XY, United Kingdom or tel./fax them at 01691 653619 within the UK, or +44 1691 65361 internationally. Or you could always just email Ian at coordmtsatxcdotorg. They’ve got a web site at http://www.btinternet.com/~ajg/mtshome.htm

————————————–

WORLD CUP IS ON ITS WAY!
The World Cup event begins in three months, June 10 – July 12. Here are some ideas you can try on a local basis, originally suggested by Michael Wozniak mwozniakatrbcdotorg. You could organize a World Cup Sunday (A special World Cup theme service), a youth soccer tournament at your church (complete with half-time talks and a post-match meal with medals and sportsmanship emphases), neighborhood outreaches to watch the matches together (show a world cup ministry video at half-time!), put ads in the paper that match the theme, create a special outreach service modeled around a soccer motif, do a prison outreach with soccer as a major component, do a literature distribution with soccer as the key topic, pray for those who are involved in all the above on a global scale. Write Michael for more options or details and may the best team win!!! (The USA faces Germany in its opener. Seems like they could have found a tougher team to warm up on. :-) NOT!)

ANNOUNCING THE 1998 ANTIOCH NETWORK ANNUAL GATHERING OF CHURCHES
August 27-30, 1998 This year’s gathering will again take place at the beautiful Pointe Hilton Resort at Squaw Peak in Phoenix, AZ. You can meet and network with others who are excited about what local churches can do in world evangelization! Broaden your knowledge about church planting among the unreached by participating in one of the people group tracks. Network with churches and organizations that are focusing on the same or closely related people groups. Antioch Network is a growing fellowship of local churches that are interacting with the challenge to send church planting teams to unreached peoples. VERSIONS, PLEASE
Okay, okay. I don’t want to be prejudiced. :-) From now on, when we refer to software, we’ll TRY to remember to state the platform, be it Windows 95 or MAC or whatever. So if you refer us to something, please try to remember to help us out in advance by providing that information. MAC users unite! :-) (No — I’m one of the 95% who use Win95 — but I’m trying hard not to be ethnocentric! :-))

TB ON THE RISE
Did you see the AP release this past week about Tuberculosis (Thanks Ed!), “which attacks mainly the lungs, intestines, skin and brain, is a bigger killer than malaria and AIDS combined, and kills more women than all the combined causes of maternal mortality. Every year, between 2 and 3 million people die from TB, including 100,000 children, the Geneva-based UN agency said.” Apparently, it’s epidemic. Better pray for more informed medical/primary health care folks for the area where your unreached people group lives!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM THE AMAZON
world globe The First International Congress on Church Planting among the Amazon River Populations was held March 10-13, 1998 in Manaus, Brazil. Representing 20 denominations and more than 10 mission agencies from 7 countries, the 158 participants covenanted to cooperate, research, intercede, plant churches, and meet together for the sake of these groups. These 33,000 river villages (90% with no church) include 100 tribes with no Bible in their own language.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRIGADA!!!
birthday cake Join us as we celebrate 3 years of focus on mobilization for the final frontiers! The first “edition” of Brigada Today occurred in January 1995 as a simple test letter between two individuals, Jonathan Marsden and Doug Lucas. Within a month, there were 38 participants and with the Feb. 18th issue, the idea of Brigada Today and the Brigada family of networks began to take shape in a more concrete way. March 21st was set as the official “public opening” and by that day, there were more than 100 involved. Interestingly enough, by August 23rd, just when we were about to celebrate topping the 800 mark and introducing something called the “People Group Consultant,” we ran this item: FROM THE “LET’S GET SERIOUS ABOUT VISION” DEPARTMENT — Ya know, I always thought that if a person was highly technical, highly skilled, highly process oriented, then they would probably be pretty scared about bulging growth. Not so with Jonathan Marsden, who helps bring the technical stuff to life at MAFxc and, as such, helps with Brigada technical projects. When I asked him in August ’95 regarding how he felt about Brigada growing past the 800 mark, I was surprised to hear him say he wasn’t satisfied. “I won’t be happy until we have 10,000 people on board, with hundreds of conferences about least reached people groups and cities all over the world.”

And now, with well some 7000 people involved, we’re nearly 3/4 of the way to Jonathan’s goal… but we’ve got a long way to go to really make a dent in the Task. Will electronic networking accomplish the Great Commission? Never. But can it help put people in touch with others? You bet. Thanks for all the encouraging testimonies we receive each week … and thanks for being part of the Brigada family! (Thanks, too, for keeping us humble! :-) One Brigada participant wrote last week, after seeing our opening item, “Let him who thinks he stands…” :-) Point taken. He went on to give encouragement . . . but . . . a word to the wise received!

————————————–

GARLIC AND GARDENIAS FOR BRIGADA
So how do we answer when people ask, “What are the five greatest strides forward and the five greatest “missed opportunities” so far with Brigada? Here’s our “garlic and gardenias” grasscatcher list:

* Gardenias to the sheer numbers of people who have jumped on board
* Garlic to the fact that those numbers haven’t translated into “action forums” for unreached groups

* Gardenias to the number of “connections” all of us now enjoy to virtually any subject in practically any part of the world! (If Brigada Today carries a query about just about anything, people tell us they get anywhere from 7 to 70+ responses giving answers and resources.)
* Garlic to the continuing questions about web security for creative access lands.

* Gardenias to the volunteerism we see that makes the Brigada concept possible! For an example, look to Don and Judy Pratt, who faithfully handle questions and problems for 7000-person mailing list some magazines have 10 people to handle that same work load and Don & Judy do it as a labor of love [while volunteering additional hours with their adopt-a-people project in China]! … and to Bob Mayhew for amazingly consistent web-mastery, transferring everything to HTML on a weekly basis, again as a labor of love! http://www.brigada.org … and to contributors like John Hanna and Mark Kelly who go on week after week, month after month, writing their columns, gathering their resources/info., AGAIN, as a labor of love. You get the idea!
* Garlic to our inability to figure out how to recruit volunteers to moderate proactive information-sharing conferences for the least reached people groups on the JP2000 list.

* Gardenias to the folks at MAFxc (like Jonathan, Rex, Bob, and early on, for Cathleen Sward) who have managed somehow to put together a bunch of wildly fun tools with incredible potential that we can all use for an insanely reasonable cost! … and to MAF (the mother org.) for believing in electronic communication enough to make the investment and buy “CrossConnect” (now MAFxc) from it’s original holding organization back when CrossConnect was still more of an idea than it was a producer of any funding at all.
* Garlic to the ideas that have never really reach their full potential, like the full implementation of the “People Group Consultant.”

* Gardenias to my wife and two boys, and to the board to which I am responsible at Team Expansion for giving me up to this labor of love for an additional 10-20 hours per week to handle the extra workload to lead the Brigada family of networks and compile Brigada Today each week.
* Garlic to the fact that I wish we could do more promotion, more marketing, more intentional growth planning, more experimentation, more recruitment, more information packets, more cutting edge stuff!

So . . . on this 3-year anniversary, we say thanks to all Brigada participants and make a very simple birthday wish: that God would enable us to make some small contribution to the global growth of His kingdom. We don’t wish for big numbers if they aren’t effective at bringing change; we don’t long for new technology if it doesn’t put us better in touch with people worldwide; we don’t yearn for publicity, a “name” or anything earthly… but that You, our Lord, would be exalted through our every word, our every step, our every keystroke. That’s our prayer. That’s the purpose of Brigada.

DISCOVER THE DISCOVERY EDITION
Have you heard about the Bible Explorer Discovery Edition? It retails for only $14.95. It is a full-blown Bible study product (not a “teaser” package) that includes the KJV, Living Bible, Thompson’s Chain, Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, maps, photos, a Bible Reading Planner, the Necessity of Prayer by EM Bounds, and more! SCCE called it their “1997 Gift of the Year.” Yikes! blinking1eyes For $14.95, I can understand why. Thompson’s Chain would cost $50 by itself!!! (at least in print form) The same company also offers a “Trial Edition” for $2.95 (that’s not a typo!), and includes the full library of their $350 version! The difference is that it expires after 30 days. (Maybe His word isn’t eternal after all!!! :-) ) The idea is that it will benefit people who are considering purchasing Bible software but aren’t sure what to get, and who don’t want to buy something they aren’t sure they can use. Now for the price of a hamburger (… well … maybe a value meal???) you can try world class Bible software in their own homes for 30 days. Check it out at http://www.epiphanysoftware.com/ or contact the company at supportatEpiphanySoftwaredotcom, Tel 888-333-BIBLE. Thanks Andy! Great opportunity!

TO CHAT IN CZECH!
Or talk to your new Kurdish neighbors in their own language! Marti at Caleb Project wrote, “The best source for language learning materials I’ve found is Audio-Forum. First got their “Azerbaijani” tapes through my local library and now I’m hooked. They claim to have the world’s largest selection of self-instructional language courses, including native American languages.” These people apparently have 275 courses in 96 languages, from Afrikaans to Zulu. Also lots of ESL material, tapes, books, and videos.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN “MAGIC”???
lighting the way Honest — last week’s reference to “the magic of the Internet” wasn’t intended to carry any spiritual significance. It’s only a figure of speech. Yikes gulp — we get mail on everything! :-)

————————————–

BIBLE CLIPS?
Has anyone ever checked out “Bible Clips” from Logos? They’re apparently a combination of scripture and artwork, formerly $119.95, but recently reduced to $59.95. http://www.logos.com/products/bibleclips/ Reportedly ideal for Vacation Bible School, Church bulletins, Books and pamphlets, Posters and signs, Curriculum materials, Slides, T-shirt art, Drama backgrounds, Sunday School handouts, Children’s coloring books, Flannelgraphs, Finger puppets, Holiday crafts, Life-size cut-out figures and more. You can see samples of the quality of art included at http://www.logos.com/products/bibleclips/ or jump right to the samples page at http://www.logos.com/products/bibleclips/samples.htm and apparently can order them via toll-free number (from the USA or Net2Phone) at 800-875-6467 to order, or visit their web order page 24 hours a day at http://www.logos.com/products/bibleclips — probably worth a try if you minister to an English-speaking people group or would like extra stuff for mobilization among English speakers. We haven’t heard of anything similar in other languages.

————————————–

DONOR SOFTWARE . . . ONE-BY-ONE
lighting the way So far we’ve only heard from one supplier of software that helps Christian workers track donations (March 6th Brigada Today, DIALING FOR DOLLARS (WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE DONOR SOFTWARE). They were to have contacted Les Tilka clfcebuatinamedotcom, who will assemble the full list. The one we’ve heard about so far looks like it has really possibilities though — Personal Ministry Manager, it’s called. Bob Newman rnewmanatmindspringdotcom puts it out personally — $75 plus $2 for domestic shipping ($5 for international). (If 10 or more are purchased as a group, he drops the price to $60 and promises to negotiate for larger orders.) I’ve seen screen shots and it does indeed look helpful… but correspond directly with Bob for the details. Our own organization wrote something back in 1991 that we still use today… but we’re currently looking at other options just because it’s so hard to maintain the product code.
(WARNING: Don’t ever write a line of code for your organization unless you want to maintain it for the next 7 years! :-))

“FOR MISSIONARIES ONLY” IS WORTH REPEATING
Grace reminded us this past week of FOR MISSIONARIES ONLY 73670dot3435atCompuServedotCom, an organization in Washington which specializes in sending Christian cassettes, CD’s, videos, etc. at about 1/3 of the price that you can get them at other places. They have missionaries in mind . . . but anyone can order from them. Catalogs are free. Grace wrote, “They also ship to restricted access countries but one has to be really specific as to how they are/aren’t to package the materials.” Write them at
PO Box 243

Leavenworth, WA 98826
Tel 1-800-272-2442
Fax them at 1-509-548-6585 73670dot3435atCompuServedotCom

WATCH YOUR WEBSIDE
WebWatch Remember to be sensitive to peering eyes on your web site. Ian Prescott IanPrescottatXCdotorg sent a warning just this morning to Brigada-Peoples citing an illustration from the field in which a local web-browsing resident had picked up a reference from one of the search engines and happened upon page-after-page of information about his Muslim people group. So — bottom line — write everything with the reality-check that it might someday be read by those who don’t share a sympathetic view. The greatest attribute we can display is love.

————————————–

ONE OPTION FOR WOULD-BE TENTMAKERS
Here’s a growing company of all kinds of people involved in placing people in tentmaking roles in creative-access lands. They promise to find you both income and legitimate presence. Write kevinattayloredcommdotcom or review the Web at http://www.tcigateway.com/ for more information. I don’t have personal experience with them . . . so make sure you check things out for yourself…. but it sounds good!

————————————–

SORRY ABOUT THE MILE-LONG TEXT!
letter and ligntening bolt Our apologies for the mile-long margins last week! Yikes gulp . . . one Brigada participant wrote that it was 2 feet deep and about 4 yards wide! Another said he finally had an excuse to buy a bigger monitor! :-) You guys are hilarious. :-) That’s all we need Missionary-types trying to become comedians. :-) Seriously, seems to be a problem with the new email client we’re using (for those who care, “Goldmine” is the culprit). In the meantime, we’ve sent this issue in good old-fashioned EudoraPro 4.0. We’re corresponding with the developers about the issue. ‘Course, maybe they can’t see our problems because they can’t scroll that far to the right! :-) Want to hear the funny part? Some users loved the new format because their mail clients wrap the text automatically . . . and when they copied it into their word processors for import into other formats, they didn’t have to suck out the hard carriage returns! For that reason, the first response from the developers at Goldmine was, “Tell all your users to upgrade!” :-) Easy for him to say. :-)

————————————–

PIPING IN PIPER
lighting the way Sorry the recent reference to John Piper’s web site was a little bit behind-the-times! His new site is http://www.desiringgod.org/ Thanks Mike!

————————————–

HTML BRIGADA BY MAIL?
Occasionally we get requests to “push” Brigada Today to users by mail, either as a separate subscription or as a replacement to the ASCII version. This would allow users to double-click the title of the item they’d like to read and thereby, jump right to it immediately. (Bob Mayhew programs the Brigada Today web equivalent in this way — http://www.brigada.org/.) Though this would probably offer extra convenience to some, many haven’t made the leap (so to speak) to HTML-compatible mail clients. So by necessity, it would mean starting a whole new distribution list . . . with new volunteers to maintain it. If somebody out there would like to tackle that, please write. . . but otherwise, looks like we’re stuck with the PgDn key! :-)

————————————–

TWO MORMON MISSIONARIES KIDNAPPED NOW FREE AGAIN
The latest news is that the two Mormon missionaries in Russia (kidnapped earlier last week) are now free. Still . . . watch and pray. If it can happen to them, it can happen to you . . . be careful out there.

————————————–

WHEN WILL WE STOP BEING SUCKERS . . .
… to every false “virus alert” that comes along! :-) The latest are “RETURNED OR UNABLE TO DELIVER” and “Win a Holiday.” Once again . . . neither is legitimately a virus. You can’t get a virus by reading email at this time. But you can by running attachments. So, for that reason, we suggest that unless you have virus-checking software, don’t open unrequested attachments!

note Avoid sending unconfirmed warnings about viruses. See the U.S. Department of Energy’s Computer Incident Advisory Capability Web site for a list of Internet hoaxes and procedures for confirming a genuine virus warning: http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html

GOT A GREAT SURVEY? SHARE IT!
Got a line on a great survey to use to figure out what your community believes about Christ? Send a copy or description to Ted Bourdon at 105332dot551atcompuservedotcom and he’ll make a summary report to us here, right Ted? Make sure you specify source, language, cost, etc., if applicable.

————————————–

SPEAK FARSI? NOW YOU CAN LISTEN TO IT!
Harvey says ACTS and ROMANS are now available in audio cassette in the Farsi language. Both come in attractive packages with colorful J-cards. Acts is a set of 2 cassettes for $7.00 postpaid in USA. Romans is a single cassette, $5.00 postpaid in USA. Check it out (along with over 300 other languages) at http://www.audioscriptures.org/

————————————–

YOUR RATES MIGHT HAVE JUST DOUBLED
Do you use Compuserve’s Infonet Network (INF) for connectivity to the Internet? If so, your rates might have just doubled. Compuserve just installed an across-the-board price increase for access via INF — from $10/hr. to $25/hr. For more info., see Sharon, our voluntary CServe guru, at srhindleatcompuservedotcom. Thanks Sharon!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE ON TAPE
world globe Through December 1997 more than 11.5 million records and cassettes were sent out from Gospel Recording’s Los Angeles base since 1938 when the first recording was done. In 1997 recordings were distributed in 1935 languages from this one base alone and shipped to 98 countries. Over 43,000 items were sent including over 6000 master cassettes for further reproduction. Recent breakthroughs for Gospel Recordings include distribution among two difficult-to-reach groups in China and Korean….

FREE UNZIPPING SOFTWARE
Maurice recommends the freeware, WiZ version 4.01 for unzipping .zip files on a Win95/NT (instead of the shareware PKUnzip). The place to get it is http://www.cdrom.com/pub/infozip/WIN32/wiz401xN.exe. For MAC users, he recommends http://www.aladdinsys.com/expander/expander.html. As Maurice writes, “We do have better uses for our money…right?” :-) Thanks Maurice!

WEBWATCH
WebWatch This week’s web watch features a site still under construction, but very promising . . . http://www.travdoc.com. Check it out for a wealth of information including where to find good quality medical care in many countries, information about pregnancy care overseas (their specialty), various articles on different overseas medical needs, etc. A great resource for anyone travelling to (short-term missions) or planning to live in another country. Thanks Jim and Laurie!

DON’T FORGET ABOUT REAL-TIME CHATTING, IF YOU DARE
If you’re into that sort of thing, try AOL Instant Messenger. It’s free at http://www.aol.com but does require that you be on-line at the same instant as the would-be recipient of your chat. As for me, I like email because I’m never sure of my exact schedule to be online… but for a family trying to get real-time communication going between the kids and the grandparents back home, this would be great stuff. Check it out! Thanks for reminding us, Jerry!

HEADHUNTERS WANTED
If you’ve always wanted to meet a real headhunter, why not become one!!!??? :-) We’re looking for 80 more subscribers by next Friday, March 20th — because on March 21st we celebrate 3 years of weekly Brigada Today newsletters . . . without ever missing a single weekend! So . . . in celebration of our 3-year-old birthday, we will be giving away a free one-year subscription to Brigada Today for every single new subscriber you bring to the network! That’s a value of . . . well . . . that’s a value!!! (The truth is, subscriptions are already free… so something gets lost in the translation here… :-) .) Bottom line . . . please help us spread the word. Since we don’t have a fancy-shmancy marketing department (or budget, for that matter), we have to rely on word-of-mouth publicity. Thanks! Our goal for March 21st 1999 is 10,000 subscribers!!! At that point, as far as we know, we’ll be the largest on-line weekly Christian publication of any kind – for whatever that’s worth. :-) (Do you know of any that’s bigger? If so, let us know at DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg. Thanks!) Thanks especially to our dynamite volunteers — Bob Mayhew (web page designer, from California) (Customer Services Managers, from Kansas), and all the regular contributors like John Hanna (“Global Glimpse” compiler, from Colorado). Do we have an office? Nope. In fact, some of us have never even met face to face! But through the magic of the Internet, we keep on pluggin’ away! Thanks for helping to make the Brigada dream a reality!

THANK GOD FOR SPONSORS!!!
Yahoo!!! Yahoo CrossLink Communications has just invested in another year of sponsorship for Brigada expenses! If you get a chance, drop them a note at salesatcrosslinkcommdotnet to say thanks for the partnership! After all, it’s because of people like Crosslink that we don’t ask for subscription fees! How many sponsors does that make so far for 1998??? A record-setting 2!!! :-) Thanks Sharon Gardner! CrossLink is a Christian based company that helps missionaries select the dialback company best suited for their international calling patterns. Their mission is to help those in full time ministry conserve their resources by finding cheaper ways of staying in touch with the “folks back home”. You can snail-mail Sharon and the CrossLink gang at

Austin, Texas 78748, USA
tel. 512-292-3308
FAX 512-282-5877.

CrossLink will be promoted as a Brigada network sponsor on the Brigada web page at http://www.brigada.org . If you’d like to sponsor a portion of Brigada’s expenses for web page hosting and hardware/software costs at MAFxc, just write . Thanks!

WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE PERSECUTED CHURCH???
Here’s at least one key contact . . . samatricommunitydotcom, contact person for the First National Conference on Religious Persecution, March 26-28, Columbia, SC.

The conference will feature leading religious liberty advocates and first person reports from many nations.

YOUR GREAT MISSION TRIP PICTURES ARE ABOUT TO BE DESTROYED!
Did you hear the latest study on the CPX-5000, a popular scanning machine for checked airline baggage? Apparently, film companies found that nearly every speed and every kind of film was fogged or otherwise ruined, even when stored away in checked baggage! The upshot??? Invest $20 in one of those lead x-ray proof bags. Small change compared to the bucks you’re investing in your missions photos!

PHILIPPINE MISSION CONFERENCE TO PROMOTE UNREACHED
1998 is the Centennial of the Philippines, both as an independent nation and as the 100th anniversary of Biblical Christianity in this country. One important Centennial Event is the Centennial Missions Congress, to be held in Manila on June 23-26. The main goal of this Congress is to see Churches “adopt” the remaining major UPG’s in the Philippines. And also for many churches to be “locked on” to a global missions vision. Please pray this Congress can produce real, focused action to achieve these results. In fact do please keep this country in your prayers throughout this year, with presidential elections in May, and other issues like the economic shaking in Asia; please intercede for the Philippines. This country on the doorstep of the 10/40 Window could have a special role in God’s plan to send His word throughout this region. Feel free to contact Jeff Woollett of YWAM Philippines at woollettatpworlddotnetdotph if you have any questions.

RECONCILIATION PRODUCTION FOR BOSNIA
For four long years the people of Bosnia have suffered unspeakable horrors. Their country, once a part of Yugoslavia, became a bloody battleground when long-simmering ethnic rivalries between Serbians, Croatians and Bosnians erupted into full-scale war. The devastating toll included thousands of casualties, refugees and orphaned children. There was also widespread destruction of roads and buildings. Today, although the fighting is over, strong animosity still exists. The need for healing, rebuilding, and reconciliation is greater than ever. Impact Teams International (ITI), an international relief agency, is responding to this need through refugee resettlement, reconstruction projects and a child trauma center. In addition, ITI is creating and sponsoring a stage production to promote reconciliation in Bosnia. IMPACT is now accepting applications for this powerful drama. We need dancers, musicians, sound and light technicians, stage crew members, administrators, and logistical staff for this tremendous team effort in Bosnia this summer. The team is presently working in Kona, Hawaii, but team members plan to be in Bosnia by June or July and touring through mid-Sept. The actual dates of the production tour are August 1-September 13, 1998. If interested call Mauricio Palacio at 808-326-4464, fax: 808-326-4434, or email Impactteamsatcompuservedotcom.

BEST Brigada DEAL YET! THE JESUS FILM FREE FOR THE UNREACHED!
In the past, we’ve celebrated several special occasions here in Brigada Today, but to the best of my memory, none has been so monumental as this one! Through a special arrangement with the Unreached Peoples Coordinator of the Jesus Film (who had to check with the director of the Jesus Film Project for permission to pull this off), Brigada participants are being offered an unbelievable opportunity! During the next two weeks (leading up to Brigada’s 3-year-old birthday), the makers of the Jesus Film are going to provide five complimentary videos of the JESUS Film to each individual or team who will commit to deliver them to an unreached people group by year’s end. In fact, if the individual or team can’t go personally, they may even send them to someone else who will be going, or is already there. Of course, additional videos are always available for reasonable prices if the individual or team wants even more copies (only 5 are free). Note that this is a special offer and will not necessarily be honored after Brigada’s birthday (March 21st) so be sure to act now.

To receive your free videos, compose a note with the following information:

* Ministry or organization name
* Contact name
* Shipping address (and special instructions, if any)
* Telephone number and email address, if available
* Name of people group(s) targeted
* Primary language(s) and/or secondary trade language
* Video standard: PAL or NTSC
* Country to be used in
* Date in 1998 that their group will be going to the country
* Date by which they need to receive the videos

Send this email to ddearingatcccidotorg, or use snail-mail at:

One final word — please be sure to thank Don Dearing and all the folks at The Jesus Film project. They have truly made this Brigada birthday a very happy one . . . and it’s totally because of their heart for the unreached.

WEB-WATCH – CORRECTION TO “MOTHER OF ALL BOOKMARK” FILES
WebWatch If you retrieved the “Mother of all Bookmark Files” (Doug Lucas’ bookmarks), perhaps you noticed one called “The Palace” and wondered exactly what Doug Lucas had been doing there! :-) Needless to say, you might want to remove this site from your collection! :-) We imported web sites from several sources to compile the collection (including two wholesale imports from PC Magazine “favorites,” so please don’t hold us accountable for the content at every site. The “Palace” has been removed from the bookmark file posted for retrieval from the web and we would encourage you to remove it from your own if you haven’t already. (Some users would also fine “The Onion” in bad taste — again, we’ve never even been there [even to date] so we can’t verify that personally, but you might also remove it, . . . and we’ve removed it from the list on the web.) Thanks to David (who has his own collection at http://www.aims.edu/~dmarvin/bookmark.htm, in case you want to check out additional options)!

CONFERENCE WITH DR. ENGEL RESCHEDULED
The AIMS Fellowship of Mission Agencies (AFMA) leaders’ retreat, postponed in February, has been rescheduled for November 19-21, 1998 in Houston, TX. The keynote speaker, Dr. James F. Engel, will address the theme “Harnessing the Power of the Storm,” which grew from a quote in his book, A Clouded Future? Advancing North American World Missions. Engel wrote, “… one thing is certain. North American missions agencies are facing turbulent times as the storm clouds grow in intensity.” Recognized for seminal writings in conversion and evangelism, strategic planning and financial resource development, Engel has also served organizations in more than 70 countries. For details, please contact Pamella Foster at 757-579-5850, or by e-mail at aimsataims-usadotorg.

YES S. AM., THERE IS A LIST OF LATIN MISSION SENDING AGENCIES!
The Ibero-American Missions Handbook is a listing of the mission agencies in Latin America, Spain and Portugal which send out Latin Americans, Spanish or Portuguese workers into cross-cultural ministry contexts. The Handbook was compiled for the recent Comibam97 Congress in Acapulco and also contains information on the countries where the Latino missionaries are serving plus summary stats, charts, graphs and maps.

The handbook is available for downloading in Spanish, Portuguese and English at the Comibam web site: http://www.comibam.org

Also available at that site are sets of transparencies in Spanish and Portuguese for missions mobilization which can also be downloaded.

This is exactly what we were searching for – – – and it stands as proof that the Brigada concept is indeed working! Remember Dan Johnson djohnsonatcdotnetdotgt, a missions mobilizer trying to assemble a list of just such agencies?? Ted Limpic just saved him about a month of work! Way to go Ted and Comibam organizers! Way to go Brigada family! Thanks especially for making it available for all on the web!!! Yahoooo! Yahoo
