THE ‘WORLD’ JUST GOT BIGGER – THE LATEST FROM GMI
Have you seen the latest from Global Mapping? It’s a great little CD called “Operation World Plus.” Packed into one spinning package, you’ll find:

* all the material from Patrick Johnstone’s 1993 Operation World (the latest version), in hypertext format, plus all the maps and graphs (in color).
* all the maps GMI sells in its overhead transparency sets (in various graphic file formats, suitable for viewing, printing, importing into PowerPoint presentations, “copy & paste” into newsletters, etc.
* World FactBook (extensive country info, map and flag for each country)

I don’t know how much all this stuff would be worth if you purchased it separately. (I know I bought a set of the maps a couple of years ago and it seems like I paid $60 for one set!) I’ve carried the electronic version of Op. World on my hard drive for some time now, but this is tons better with all the color maps and the fact book. The cost??? An incredibly reasonable $29.95. If you’re interested, send the thirty bucks to
GMI

Highly recommended.

SOMETHING WORTHWHILE ON THE WEB . . . FOR THE WORLD!
Finally something incredibly worthwhile on the web . . . for the world! From any point on the globe, you can now view the JESUS Film (using RealVideo) in English, Bengali-Musselmani, Arabic, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish! Plus, developers are adding a new language to the Net almost weekly. Soon, there will be 14 languages. With some versions of RealVideo 5.0, you can go full screen. As far as anyone knows, JESUS is the first feature length film in history to be “aired” on the Internet. You can check out the action at: http://www.jesusfilm.org/realvideo/

Also, you can now order the Jesus Film on the web in any of some 450 languages at http://www.jesusfilm.org/video.html

Or as an alternative, listen to the new audio version of JESUS at http://jesusfilm.org/audiodrama/

It’s a totally new version specifically designed for audio. How ’bout we give 3 cheers to the folks at the “Jesus Film Project” and Campus Crusade for pulling off a great accomplishment in an excellent way!

PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW IV
So you’ve heard about Praying Through the Window I, II, and III . . . but did you know there was one final sequel scheduled? It’s coming to a church near you, October 1999. The broad focus will be the nations of the 10/40 Window, similar to 1993. Once again, organizers will circulate a prayer calendar and ask us all to pray for certain nations on certain days throughout the month of October. But in addition, the committee has adopted Campus Crusade’s paradigm of “Million People Target Areas” (MPTAs). I came across this MPTA concept way back in 1989 at Lausanne II in Manilla. Sometimes the concept works well — if all 1 million happen to be from the same ethnic background. Critics say that sometimes the MPTA paradigm breaks down, especially in complex rural areas where more than one ethnolinguistic group lives in the same MPTA. Gulp. gulp Anyway, the book helping prayer warriors to target their prayers for this initiative will contain maps of each of the nations with the location of each of the cities and Strategic Towns within the nation. Many home-based and church-based intercessors will pray specifically for these cities and towns, and it is hoped that prayer journey teams will visit each one of them for on site prayer. To keep continuity with Praying Through the Window III, the description of the cities and towns will each contain a list of those among the 1,739 unreached people groups which are present in significant numbers. In this way participants will be praying for nations, for cities, and for unreached people groups as they pray for the Million People Target Areas in October 1999. And by the way, leaders from PTWIII are now pulling together the results of last fall’s experiences into a book that will give testimonies, answered prayer and more. We’ll announce it here once it’s done.

GOT A “MISSIONARY KID?” GET RAISING RESILIENT MKS
Have you seen ACSI’s new compendium (Ed. by Joyce Bowers) on raising children of missionaries? We’re talkin’ BIG… 510 pages in all. It’s a comprehensive one-volume collection of some of the best and most current thinking on a wide range of topics dealing with the nurture and education of missionary children. Provides resources for parents, teachers, school administrators, and caregivers. Included is information on the MK life cycle which would be helpful for mission administrators and personnel directors. Great stuff. I got mine from MTI, Mission Training Int’l minternataoldotcom.

————————————–

WEB-WATCH — SITE FOR JEWISH EYES
WebWatch Check out http://www.biblefind.com where the developer hope those from Israel and Jews from everywhere will be able to find new hope. Basic service there is free… but the developers also have offered to give a 50% discount on the advanced service (normally $25/year) if you mention that use “Brigada family” in your registration. (Sorry — no equivalent service for those without web access.)

————————————–

MOBILIZING? GET FREE INFO. ON COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD
Check out http://www.emulateme.com where you can find country profiles, maps, flags and national anthems. The anthems are MIDI files and should play on PCs with sound cards. (Thanks for the tip, Robert!)

————————————–

“SO WHY WERE YOUR WEB REFERENCES ALL MESSED UP?”
This has got to be one of the most popular questions these past couple of weeks. Must be due to some new “feature” added into the latest upgrade of Eudora Pro. This weekend we’re using Outlook in an attempt to bypass the problem. Sorry for any inconvenience!

————————————–

MORE ABOUT VIDEO BIBLE SCHOOL IN ANY LANGUAGE
Using “life messages” from world known teachers such as Dick Eastman, Larry Stockstill, Jack Hayford, Graham Kendrick, Juan Carlos Ortiz and many others, Good Shepherd Ministries, International now has available a tool that will enable local churches anywhere in the world to become ministry training centers. The project was created as a “Training Equivalent of the Jesus Film” and over 180 hour-long sessions have already been professionally recorded in a bilingual format targeted at young leaders in countries such as China, Russia or India. Over 35 major world languages are currently available and others can rapidly be added on any mission field. Videos are available in all world formats and on video CD’s so literally a whole Bible School can fit in a briefcase including the player. Notes also available. Information obtainable from goodshepherdminatcompuservedotcom.

THE BOTTOM LINE ON PRICELINE.COM
Several folks have now tried out http://www.priceline.com Thanks for your willingness to be test subjects! Seems we now have enough of a consensus to say that it indeed does have potential, but you have

* have flexibility on travel times,
* a willingness to use electronic tickets instead of paper, and
* lots of luck!

They charge you if you ask for operator assistance, charge you if you want to try a second time on the same itinerary, and charge you if you sneeze. :-) So — step carefully! But . . . again . . . it does have potential.

————————————–

GOT A LINE ON A EUROPEAN VALUES SURVEY?
If so, write Jim and Laurie Barnes JLEBarnesatcompuservedotcom.

————————————–

GOT A SERVER RUNNING POINT TO POINT TUNNELLING PROTOCOL
If so, please write David Pratten dprattenatmafdotorg.

YOUR TESTIMONIES WILL BE SENT TO THE NATIONS
Christian News, a non-denominational twice-weekly Christian newspaper, is looking for mission news. Send news about what is happening in your field to Feoshia at goodnewsatchristiannewsdotorg. See http://www.christiannews.org for more info.

————————————–

FIRST NATIONS TO GATHER
This September 5-13, organizers expect some 7-10,000 Christian Indigenous people from 50 countries to gather in Rapid City, S. Dakota, for the 2nd World Christian Gathering of Indigenous People. (In 1996 over 2000 from 32 countries met in Rotorua, New Zealand.) Planners say “It is a time of celebration by tribal peoples of the goodness and grace of Almighty God in Jesus Christ. It is a time of worship utilizing the many beautiful God-given cultural forms of music, instruments, dance, language, art, storytelling, giftgiving, and dress. It is a time of exploring cultural and linguistic formats to bridge the gap between Jesus Christ and their people. Please pray for God’s protection, provision and wisdom as the First Nations people of the earth gather for perhaps the largest gathering of its kind in modern church history.” Learn more at http://www.chazm.com/wcgip

DISTANCE LEARNERS COVER THE DISTANCE
Tony’s trying to compile a list of correspondence (distance learning) courses on Islam and on teaching English as a foreign language, as part of being better equipped for the future in his country of missions service. He’ll compile for the next 21 days then make the report available to Brigada Today readers on May 21st. Write him at tonyatomrussiadotspbdotsu to be included in the compilation.

GET THE FACTS . . . ON THE FAX
Fax of the Apostles is a monthly world briefing of what God is doing through Every Home for Christ and other ministries. The goal is to provide inspiring stories, useful resources, and sermon illustrations. This is available through Email or fax and it is free. For more information or to subscribe, contact Carol at carolaatehcdotorg.

BECOME A PEN PAL FOR THOSE FOLLOWING THE PROPHET
Turkish World Outreach (TWO) urgently needs Christian volunteers who will send ten Gospel Letters per month to Muslim families in Turkey. They apparently have more than three million current addresses and are praying for Gospel Letter Volunteers to help them reach each one. They provide Turkish letters, a translation, addresses, and instructions. Volunteers are asked to provide the postage and envelopes to send their ten letters monthly. Postage is 60 cents per letter (from the US). The letters are in Turkish and offer a free Turkish New Testament and “Jesus Film” video. An effective follow-up program is underway in Turkey, and Christian workers will reach out to those who show a serious interest in the Gospel. Each respondent will also receive the offer of a free Bible correspondence course. For more information, contact TWOsteveatonlinecoldotcom.

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us! See the note above if you’d like to submit items for Brigada Today. Thanks for understanding. Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.

FREE! TRANSLATE ON THE WEB!
Carol nevincatusadotnet gets the prize for coming up with the Brigada “Tip of the Week”!!! She found where you can translate between five languages forward and backward in and out of English. It takes a bit of time . . . but it’s a GREAT help for those who are wanting to translate web sites, pages of information, etc. Granted, I’m sure it would take some polishing, but in my own simple testing, it at least provides a foundation for getting the translation started. Give it a try and let us know how it works for you! And Carol, enjoy those two tickets to Bosnia, free from Brigada! (Okay — so I’m kidding about the tickets — but we’re NOT kidding about our thanks!!!! God bless!)

————————————–

TO ALL FROM ME, THE “FORMAT-CHALLENGED”
Can you believe the mess in last week’s Brigada Today? I’d suggest throwing away the item about formatting addresses and web sites in email. Yikes. gulp I just hope this issue comes through better. What we were TRYING to suggest is: When sending items into <dlucasatTeamExpansiondotorg> for inclusion in Brigada Today, please enclose email addresses in < > pointy braces as in the example above. For web-sites (URLs), please just space down and leave them on a separate line. (Jonathan at MAFxc says that’s probably safest of all.) Please DO include the “http://” on the front of the web address. Some email clients watch for it as a queue for URLs. Thus, if you were giving the URL for the Brigada home page, you could give it…

http://www.brigada.org

So . . . again, apologies for the muddy “send” last week. Believe it or not, we used Eudora (which is supposed to be a standard) but the newest version (Eudora Pro Comm Center) evidently takes SEVERAL liberties with formatting sites and email addresses. Thanks for your patience as we work out the kinks!

————————————–

FROM THE “AREN’T YOU GLAD YOU’RE A STUDENT” DEPT.
Remember WinAlim (see last week’s Brigada Today, “ISLAM ON A DISK”)? Turns out that students can get it for $69. One user said it was definitely worth the bucks for the serious scholar of Islam. Thanks Jeff! http://www.islsoftware.com/html/the_alim.html

————————————–

NEED ONE OF THOSE “CALL BACK” PHONE COMPANIES?
I know they’re all around… but this one just informed us that Brigada Today readers could get a free month and new lower rates. Try it and let us know what you think… http://www.musictus.com/telecom%3Ehttp://www.musictus.com/telecom These callback companies promise international dialers (from outside the USA) calling into the USA that they can call a number locally which will then initiate a USA call from the company’s computer which will then allow the caller to connect to a USA dialtone. Pretty cool idea. thumbs-up

————————————–

GLOBAL GLIMPSE ON STATS
world globe Approximately 17 million people become church members globally each year through conversion while about 7 million leave the church. In addition to this, 53 million children are born into Christian families each year and 21 million church members die. This makes a daily growth rate of some 115,000 people of whom 27,400 are new converts and 87,700 are babies. Roughly two billion people claim Christianity with 1/3 considered to be Great Commission Christians.
(Source: Justin Long, Global Evangelism Movement / World Christian Encyclopedia, http://www.gem-werc.org via FridayFax, Feb 6, 1998.)
Global Glimpse is compiled each week by John Hanna, Caleb Project, Littleton, CO.)

————————————–

YOU’RE INVITED TO SCOPE OUT SCOPE
… the conference, not the mouthwash. The Strategic Congress On Prayer Evangelism ’98 will take place September 29-October 2, Tue-Fri noon, in Colorado Springs. Dick Eastman, International President of Every Home for Christ is hosting the event. Speakers include: Ted Haggard, Michael Fletcher and Rick Zachary. The emphasis is on partnering together to reach Least Evangelized People Groups, as well as “city reaching strategies.” For more information, contact Kevin or Barbara at kguttmanatehcdotorg.

————————————–

SHORT IS SWEET: EMAIL ETIQUETTE
Is it just my imagination or are we getting more email these days than we did 10 years ago? :-) My suggestion? Be kind to the animals: Don’t feed them more than they can bare. When you’re emailing someone, try your best to be as brief as the situation allows. Your recipient will be glad you did!

————————————–

WANT INFO ON THE CULTS IN THE USA?
Our volunteer compiler, Ted Bourdon 105332dot551atcompuservedotcom, found two. The first is author George Barna, whose book The Index of Leading Spiritual Indicators is from Thomas Nelson/WORD Publishers. Get the sister newsletter from Thomas Nelson Word Ministry Resources, 800-933-9673 ext 2037. The second is The New England Institute of Religious Research (NEIRR), which conducts seminars on cults that are primarily operating in the New England area. However, in conversation with Bob Pardon, 508-947-9571, email neirratmadotultranetdotcom, they are a resource for much information on all cults. Thanks Ted!

————————————–

PREPARING TO SERVE
China ’98: Preparing to Serve, is a discipleship conference for Chinese Christian students to be held July 22-26, 1998 in Colorado Springs. Topics will include evangelism and discipleship training, cell-group planting, Bible study, etc. Invitations are being sent to appropriate potential conferees on the recommendation of ministry leaders. If you know of a student who should receive an invitation, please send the student’s name and address to ISI by email at China98Leadershipatisionlinedotorg.

TRAIN & MULTIPLY – THE RESOURCE
“Train & Multiply” was originally developed by George Patterson as a Theological Ed. by Extension (TEE) course. But he especially found it incredibly effective to train church planters. You can get the course in several languages, including, for example, English and French with Black African pictures. A complete sample set of the materials with the Chilean (white) pictures and English text costs US$95 plus US$25 surface mail or US$50 airmail. At present the Black African English version is available only on diskette in Microsoft Publisher 3.0 format for US$300. (With these you can print out originals or booklets as you need them.) Says trainer Ian Benson, “The materials are for training new workers as leaders of groups – as these groups are established and multiply, so do the workers. They form an on-the-job pastoral training programme that is very flexible. Being flexible, it also requires discipline. Hundreds of churches have been established using this method – in different countries around the world.” If you haven’t studied them before, give them a chance. You’ll be glad you did! Write Ian at CoordmtsatXCdotOrg for more info. Orders go to

————————————–

FORMING MISSIONARY TEAMS
MTS also has a new booklet called The Missionary Team, which discusses how to form and lead a missionary team. This study helps a team develop a memorandum of understanding and an action plan. It outlines responsibilities of team members and the team leader. Other areas covered include:

* practical suggestions for building a strong team
* family life as missionaries
* dealing with culture shock
* relationships with the home church and sending agency
* spiritual warfare
* proven spiritual ways of raising prayer and financial support
* dealing with emergencies
* handling sexual temptation on the field
* organizing home leave and furloughs

Looks VERY good. How can we NOT order this book!??? US$6.50 plus Seamail: US$1.50 Airmail US$3.00. Checks go to

HOW TO LIST ADDRESSES AND URLS FOR BRIGADA
When sending items into <dlucasatTeamExpansiondotorg> for inclusion in Brigada Today, please enclose email addresses in < > pointy braces as in the example above. We’re also now enclosing web addresses (URLs) in pointy braces, but for the benefit of some browsers who might not read those URLs correctly with the pointy braces “attached,” please leave a space on either side of the URL. See examples below in this edition of Brigada Today. Please DO include the “http://” on the front of the web address. Some email clients watch for it as a queue for URLs.

————————————–

FROM THE “I TOLD YOU WE’D ONLY HAVE 5 YEARS IN THE USSR” DEPT.
Word on the street is that a Russian official recently told an American missionary that eventually all American missionaries would be expelled from the Republic of Russia. He evidently said it as that missionary was being expelled. Yikes. gulp Guess we should have expected it since naysayers warned us of the possibility as far back as 1991 when the wall fell. “Mark my words — we’ll be lucky to have 5 years here in this window of opportunity.” Well, five years passed . . . but now we’re at the 7-year mark and some people are already having problems. To me the one key thing we should learn is that when these windows of opportunity occur, we need to climb through them QUICKLY and EFFECTIVELY, and in a harmonious fashion. I believe God is going to continue to orchestrate the “awakenings” — our job is to be there when they happen.

Well . . . maybe not quite . . . but close, according to our friend Rod. He says it’s “the hottest Islamic resource” he’s ever seen. After showing it to one friend heading into missions among Muslims, he stated emphatically, “No missionary to Muslims should leave for the field without it!” WinAlim is an entire bookcase full of scholarly Islamic resources on one CD. ISL Software designed WinAlim for Muslims desiring to become an Alim (scholar) in Islam. Just as Christians have powerful Bible software today, Muslims have WinAlim. In many ways, WinAlim is far more sophisticated than most Christian software. With WinAlim, you not only have quick access to any book, subject, or page of the most widely read Islamic reference works, but you can also HEAR any verse of the Quran recited in eloquent Arabic! (Great for memorizing those helpful ayats which can be used as evangelistic bridges!) WinAlim lets you search for any word, phrase, person, hadith narrator, subject, or idea and easily acquire the facts you need. The Alim is an indispensable tool for every missionary to Muslims. Purchasing all the books contained in WinAlim would cost hundreds of dollars, but the cost of WinAlim is $99! Such a deal. http://www.islsoftware.com/html/the_alim.html Mac users need not lament the fact that this amazing tool is only available for Windows users. With VirtualPC http://www.connectix.com/html/connectix_virtualpc.html, WinAlim works beautifully on a Mac! (Now see, we don’t ALWAYS forget about the holdouts!! :-)) Sounds like this one’s a keeper . . . if you’re headed toward an Islamic land. Thanks Rod!

WEB-WATCH – FREE SOFTWARE FOR CHRISTIANS

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS WORKSHOP FOR MISSIONARIES
Mission Training International is sponsoring a five-day workshop designed to help missionaries and mission leaders build their interpersonal skills It will be held near Colorado Springs, November 5-11, 1998. Some of the issues addressed include “drawing people out, helping others solve problems, confrontation and conflict management, building trust, helping others grieve well, and managing stress.” Sorry, this workshop is for missionaries only. The whole workshop is based on practical application of Scripture, and is very interactive, with demonstrations, practice, small group sharing, etc. It will be facilitated by long term missionaries who are experienced trainers. For more information, call MTI at (800) 896-3710 (if you’re in the USA or can use “Net2phone”) or email minternataoldotcom.

THE DEFINITIVE RESOURCE FOR MULTICULTURAL TEAMS
Dr. Lianne Roembke of Campus Crusade International has completed a landmark study on multicultural mission teams. Based on her doctoral dissertation, this book is filled with significant data, relevant insights, and practical ways to help multicultural teams work well. The book is only available through Dr. Roembke. The cost is $15 per copy, including surface mail from Germany. (Not a bad deal for a “definitive resource!” :-)) For more information, contact her at lroembkeataoldotcom.

HOW TO BECOME AN EFFECTIVE SENDING CHURCH IN 3 EASY LESSONS
That’s what Grace gracewatidmaildotcom. :-) ‘Course, she knows it won’t be that easy, . . . so she’d like to develop a kind of seminar on the process of effective partnership in missions for local churches. So far, she likes Neal Pirolo’s SERVING AS SENDERS book (excellent!!) and The Effective Sending Church (by The Missionary Training Service in the UK). Got other resources? Heard of any great ideas or got any stories about how God has blessed a sending church and her missionaries as the church has become more vitally connected as EFFECTIVE senders, etc.? She’ll make the entire course available to us after it’s assembled. How ’bout that.

TEACHING ENGLISH FROM YOUR LOCAL CHURCH
Great idea for outreach to internationals in your area — and you’ll build tons of great relationships in the process. Your church people get involved, and, who knows . . . maybe a few of the internationals will get involved in your church! Literacy & Evangelism International has produced a Bible-based ESL curriculum called, PASSPORT TO THE WORLD OF ENGLISH. Two “how-to” institutes are scheduled for this summer: June 1-6 at Christ For the Nations Institute in Dallas, Texas; (Cost $235 for tuition, books, materials, room & meals.) and July 20-25 at Christian Heritage College, San Diego, California. (Cost: $250.) The objectives of these institutes are:

1. to equip Christian volunteers to be able to tutor English using Passport to the World of English as a means to share language, culture and the Christian faith;
2. to learn how to start an ESL outreach ministry from the local church to the millions of internationals now living in our neighborhoods;
3. to assist our ethnic congregations with their evangelism outreaches by providing English classes where they can invites their non-believing friends & relatives;
4. be introduce LEI’s newest short-term missions ESL curriculum “Nation to Nations,” as a field-test copy for churches to use.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM THE LAND OF MOSQUES
Christianity is continuing to expand in traditionally Islamic Syria. Observers say many Muslims are deciding to follow Jesus, attributing this to the country’s Christians’ intense prayer and fasting. The government is also easing restrictions previously placed on Christian movements. One Christian organization received permission to print and distribute thousands of New Testaments. Even though Syria’s Christians are restricted in their rights to meet, the government donated land to build chapels and churches waving water and electricity fees, as for mosques.

NEED TO SHIP AT 40 CENTS/POUND TO ROMANIA AND OTHER LANDS?
If you have to ship to Romania, India, Nicaragua, Honduras, Haiti, Venezuela, Thailand, or Romania, try Christian Veterans Association, a shipping ministry for missionaries. They hope to get rates down to 30 cents/pound but pledge no more than 40 cents. Contact CVAatjunodotcom for more info.

CRITICAL MASS OF INFORMATION
Have you ever wished you could do real-time searches through web-archived copies of full-text books, missions magazines and newsletters, and email conference archives? If so, Nolan nrwordathotmaildotcom would like to know. He’s wondering, “Would the general missions community use this site?, Would the royalties on materials be such that the project would be made impossible?, Would the missions community and advertisers targeting missionaries support this site through banner advertising? If you have any ideas or comments, email nrwordathotmaildotcom.

STREET-SMART AMONG 7000 OTHER USERS
Thanks to Don & Judy, who have been serving as our “stand in” Brigada Customer Relations Managers (totally volunteer) for the past few months. As of this past week, they’ve renewed their commitment on a more indefinite basis!!! Yahooo! You can make their job tons easier by observing simple principles like these:

1. before changing email servers, please unsubscribe; then once you have your new address, subscribe again. (see instructions at the end of each Brigada Today
2. If you’re a CompuServe user and would like to change your address to the new “alpha” format, please unsubscribe before doing so. Then once you’ve changed, subscribe back again.
3. If your mailbox has limited space, unsubscribe before leaving for that 3-month mission trip!!! :-) Your friends just might fill up your box and emails to you will bounce back. No fun when you have to maintain a mail list of over 7000 people!
4. If you use “vacation mail notifiers” (“I’m on vacation; I’ll write you when I return”), make sure they’re “friendly” to bulk mail like Brigada conference mailings. For more information, contact your system administrator and ask about how to set up the filter. If there’s no filter, then simply unsubscribe from Brigada conferences before leaving.

Thanks for making Don and Judy’s job easier!!! Join us in thanking God for their totally voluntary service!

APPLIED ETHNOMUSICOLOGY
Would you like help in getting a handle on non-western music, and get ideas as to how to utilize it effectively in your ministry overseas? A week of training in applied ethnomusicology will be taught at the Dallas center of SIL/Wycliffe Bible Translators, June 8-13. A primary purpose is to train some students to do music research later in the summer, but everyone with an interest in promoting indigenous hymns is invited, including college students and members of all mission agencies. There will be a moderate cost for materials for this short non-credit class. Room and board are available at the dorm. If you’d like to know more, contact paul_neeleyatsildotorg.

READ A BOOK VIA YOUR LAPTOP
Taking your laptop on your next mission cruise? Then why not catch up on your reading while you’re at it (makes those long plane rides seem shorter). Project Gutenberg is constantly whacking out new books at http://www.promo.net/pg. They’re free… and the New Testament and OT/NT is there too (in KJV). If you’ve got a new Windows/CE palmtop, you could download the whole novel there and read a book in your palm!

PARKLAND CHRISTIAN! THANKS FOR YOUR SPONSORSHIP TO BRIGADA
We just wrote a check this past week for nearly $500 to cover web hosting expenses at MAFxc. And just a day later out of the blue comes a wonderful sponsor’s check from Parkland Christian Church, 12305 Spanaway Loop Road, Tacoma, WA 98444, tel. 253-531-0757. If you live anywhere in the Seattle/Tacoma area and you’re looking for a missions-minded church to attend, I hope you’ll consider Parkland Christian. They’ve apparently got some very globally minded people there! Now here’s my simple request: Would you be kind enough to send a one-line thank-you note to Lee Higley higtacatjunodotcom Maybe he’ll pass it along to their missions committee . . . and while you’re at it, would you utter a prayer of thanksgiving for their gift, which has helped keep Brigada an absolutely free service for the whole world to utilize! Parkland will earn a spot in the sponsors page on the Brigada web site!

NEW UNREACHED PEOPLES VIDEO SERIES LOOKS VERY PROMISING!
movie camera Wow! blinking1eyes This looks like great stuff. Today we’re introducing a New Unreached People Group Video Series THE WAITING WORLD. We are living in a flash-point of spiritual history unlike any other! The fields are ripe for harvest, especially in the 10/40 Window, where response rate to the Gospel is an explosive 30 to 40 times higher than in the already “Christianized” parts of the world. It is time to add fuel to this fire for the Gospel. YWAM Strategic Frontiers is now offering a high quality unreached people group video series entitled The Waiting World, designed to engage the imagination and ignite the prayer of viewers. The series is packed full of fast moving, colorful footage of the people most in need of Christ today. Professional voice-overs augment the images to give the best possible information for prayer. Each edition is only 3 minutes long, suitable for a church service presentation or as an introduction for a prayer group. A premier subscription to The Waiting World includes these twelve people groups, produced in cooperation with several ministries and producers: the Turks of Turkey, the Khmer of Cambodia, the Riff Berber of Morocco, the Uzbeks of Uzbekistan, the Kazaks of Kazakstan, the Minangkabau of Indonesia, the Mongols of Mongolia, the Pushtuns of Afganistan, the Punjabis of Pakistan, the Miao of China, the Amdo of Tibet, and the Maratha of India. A 12 month subscription to this dynamic series is only $120, and will be available June 1, 1998. Contact:

NOW PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW IV IS ALREADY GEARING UP!
Praying Through The Window I in October 1993 targeted the 62 countries of The 10/40 Window, mustering over 21 million intercessors worldwide. Praying Through The Window II in October 1995 mobilized prayer for the “Gateway Cities” of this region, with over 36 million intercessors supporting this initiative in daily prayer. Then Praying Through The Window III, culminating in October 1997, focused on the unreached peoples of The 10/40 Window. Christian Information Network’s director, Beverly Pegues expects the latest company of intercessors to match or exceed the size of the previous one. Now Praying Through The Window IV is gearing up for the last such initiative of the millennium in October 1999. Titled “Light The Window,” it returns to a focus on the nations of The 10/40 Window, while incorporating the strategic prayer information of the other efforts. BIBLE SCHOOL TRAINING VIA VIDEO
Milton Fauss mrfaussatverenadotro highly recommends “International Curriculum” by Good Shepherd Ministries goodshepherdminatcompuservedotcom. He writes, “They have an excellent approach to Bible School training using video cassettes and manuals. I am a missionary in Sibiu, Romania with Calvary Commission, where we have begun a Bible School in our local church. These courses are professionally translated and the teachers are well recognized in their fields of specialization. I think they have about 25 languages translated now. The director’s name is Berin Gilfillan. Milton feels this curriculum would help local churches train their own people for local service or for missions. Check it out!

NOMINALISM – HO-HUM
:-) Heather 100616dot1657atcompuservedotcom from the Lausanne Mov’t sent this note in to Brigada Today this past week: “Nominalism is an issue which is growing in significance around the world, although it is most relevant in Europe. In Britain for example, 65% of the population call themselves Christian, of whom 10% are regular churchgoers and 5% church members who do not attend. This leaves 50% of the population who call themselves Christian but neither attend church nor are members. Nominal Christians raise questions for those of us who are active Christians. Who are they? Why do they not now go to church? If they used to go, will they come back? If so, what would make them do so? Is nominalism a problem or is it sometimes part of the cyclical nature of the Christian journey? The Lausanne Movement for World Evangelization is holding a major Consultation in December to look at this subject. It will bring together near London, England key speakers from around the world from 6-12th December 1998. If you would like to join them, please email Christian Research, 100616dot1657atcompuservedotcom They will send you details and booking information by post, so please include your mailing address.” Thanks Heather!

SECTS EDUCATION IN YOUR CHURCH
Isn’t it about time you developed a Sects Education program for your church??? Ted tbourdonatmissionparkdotcom thinks so. He just showed The Mormon Puzzle and his church loved it, in part because it was presented in such a balanced fashion. Got any good videos or resources that Ted can compile for the Brigada Today audience? Send them to him and he’ll report back here in a couple of weeks.

TOOL TIME FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS
Speaking of the influence of the Internet, an industry pundit recently wrote, “Driven by the realities of global commerce, and supported by the ever-widening reach of the Internet, it is inconceivable that our grandchildren will live in a world where the citizens of all developed nations won’t be able to speak with one another….as much as some die-hard cultural chauvinists despise the idea, it’s obvious the language we’ll all share will be English.” Whether fueled by the Internet or not, the ever increasing demand for English language skills create a wonderful opportunity for ministry. Want to find out how you can leverage the interest in conversational English for your ministry? Check out the Adventures in English materials the EFCM International Network has put together. With a focus on developing conversational English in a small group setting, these newly revised materials have been developed through 6 years of actual cross-cultural use by short-term teams of non-professional ESL teachers. For more information or a sample of the 1998 material visit the EFCM web site at http://www.efcm.org/adventur.html or contact Don Erickson at 72066dot2020atcompuservedotcom.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM THE SKIES
world globe Sat-7, the Arabic Language Satellite TV receives an avid response from viewers. An isolated Christian woman in Algeria wrote “I found your channel by accident and, at first, could not believe it! I thank God for you because I was, and still am, very lonely and in need of such programs to encourage and strengthen me.” A man wrote from Syria, “Am I dreaming or is it true? Today I was surfing the channels and found a soap opera where Egyptians were quoting the Bible! Is there really a Christian channel I can watch?! I cannot describe my happiness with this wonderful news!” This month viewing hours are being increased to 9 hours per week.

LOOKING WHAT THE GERMANS ARE COOKING UP
Want to be featured in a German cookbook? Here’s your big chance to be a galloping gourmet “Berlin style”! Kerstin 100711dot2622atCompuservedotcom wants your recipes! Send her…

1. one typical easy to cook recipe (no ingredients that are too exotic — and preferably make it a tasty one for Europeans) – could be anything – a typical drink, lunch or sweet;
2. short info on the people group with which you work (half a page — or ask Kerstin to improvise on your group if it’s a commonly known one);
3. something special about their culture (one interesting custom etc.);
4. 2 – 4 specific prayer requests (preferably things that can be prayed for the next few years, not something that will be outdated in a few weeks time).

What a great idea! I love to eat :-) . . . so I’m hoping that this resource will be ready by the time I visit Munich in July!!! :-)

BUDDHISTS: “THE CHRISTIANS ARE COMING!”
Did you see Dan Henrich’s DanHenrichatxcdotorg report that Buddhists are starting to get “spooked” about the growth of Christianity around the world? Apparently, they’re concerned that they’re losing members to Christian work too quickly! Dan was commenting on the “First World Buddhist Propagation Conference” which met recently in Kyoto, Japan. Reportedly, leaders from 15 Asian countries gathered to discuss an identity crisis among Buddhism’s followers and the fact that Buddhism is “. . . losing its following to the more aggressive missionary efforts of Christians.” The Malaysian High Priest, K Sri Dammananda Maha Thera said, “Every day we are losing our youth to Christianity.” He also commented that Buddhism is on the decline in South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan.

HERE’S THE JOB OPPORTUNITY OF THE YEAR
Dennis Fahringer photoatuofndotedu is looking for someone who knows the Lord and cares deeply about training missionaries from around the world. (More than half his students are internationals.) He needs a person who can teach at his school July 13-18 on a particular technical topic: color printing from negatives and slides, as well as a bit of color theory. Ideally, the person should have professional experience, but that’s not absolutely essential. He can cover airfare, room and board, and $100/day honorarium for the guest teacher. The person needs to be email-accessible. Here’s the catch: The school is YWAM’s University of the Nations at the Kona campus in Hawaii. NOW I regret that when I used to be a newspaper photographer in Southern Indiana, I only shot B&W!!! :-) So . . . if you’re interested, write Dennis at the address above. Surf’s up! (Seriously — the number one criterion is a passion for training world evangelists . . . not a desire for a great tan.)

PERSPECTIVES STUDENTS AND UNREACHED PEOPLE PROFILES
Did you see Marti Smith’s msmithatcprojectdotcom thoughts on Brigada-peoples this past week? She works in Caleb Project’s advocacy department and I thought her comments were VERY interesting. Check it out: “… It would help if Perspectives coordinators stopped billing the unreached people project as “your opportunity to write something brand new that will help lots of other people pray,” and instead described it as “your opportunity to gather information, apply what you’re learning about culture & strategy, and allow God to motivate you to pray.” … I had a good conversation last weekend with Meg Crossman, editor of the “Worldwide Perspectives” text now being used by many Perspectives on the World Christian Movement classes. She said she thought the day of writing UPG profiles for Perspectives was waning; suggested more classes accomplish the project goals by interviewing members of their local ethnic communities, some of whom are members of unreached peoples. You’d be surprised what you can learn about someone else’s culture if you are willing to give of your time, learn to ask questions, and listen. (I could recommend books and articles if you’re interested in learning more about ‘ethnographic interviewing.’) Write Marti if you’re interested!

Thanks to for hosting the Brigada mailing list.
Emphasis is placed on items relating to unreached peoples and challenges faced by those reaching them cross-culturally.

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list.

Thank you.
