“WOMEN OF THE HARVEST,” IT’S ABOUT TIME YOU HAD A MAGAZINE!

When Laurie Bolthouse was preparing to go to Albania in Apr. ’97 with her husband, Bill, she looked for published materials specifically for women in missions. To her dismay, she found none. That’s when Laurie approached Stephanie Nelson, who had her own writing and editing business, with the idea of starting a magazine that would be a forum for issues uniquely related to women in foreign missions service. “I am challenged and deeply encouraged listening to the hearts of other women,” Laurie says. “I need their experiences and wisdom to persevere. I need connection with those who also have chosen this challenging, difficult, but exhilarating path.” “Making that connection a reality is what this new magazine is about,” says Stephanie, editor of Women of the Harvest magazine. Along with real stories from women serving in missions, regular features will keep them in touch with their own culture — book reviews, recipes, devotions, beauty and health tips, and an “Ask the Doctor” section where they can email questions. Women of the Harvest is published quarterly by Women of the Harvest Int’l. Subscription is $16/year. For more info., write

GIVE THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING!

Have you ever checked out Portrait of Jesus cassettes? If not, someone should give one of these a try! They evidently are available in 60 different languages! Example: ‘The Greatest Person Who Ever Lived’ is, according to one Brigada participant, “a beautiful selection of passages from the gospels. These passages connect and flow to give an accurate and compelling portrait of Jesus so that the listener may hear this good news and believe in Him.” To check it out, contact

HOW MANY BIBLES?

One source said, “The United Bible Societies published 20,035,360 Bibles last year, and a total of 361,633,376 Scriptures altogether.”
--------------------------------------

WHERE HAVE ALL THE CHILDREN GONE?

To the streets, that’s where! According to Ken Spatz, at present there are possibly 200 million or more children in the world in desperate circumstances. These are the street children, the orphaned, abandoned, exploited in the work place, exploited sexually. They are literally homeless, hopeless and helpless, through no fault of their own. Now, someone would like to find out how many? Where? Why? The Need? Ken dreams of finding an individual, a group, a church, or cooperative group of churches in every country who will take on the task of gathering this information from their country. UPDATE FROM BOSNIA

This week, I’m compiling Brigada Today from within Bosnia. My wife and two boys are here with me on a prayer journey with leaders from two very exciting churches, both of which are examining the possibilities of “adopting” a city or region here. We’ve been GREATLY assisted by cooperative missionaries who have been learning the critical importance of working side by side in unity with others in their region. That cooperation really is beautiful.

But the landscape here — physical, spiritual AND emotional — is incredibly marred by the recent years of war and bloodshed. In this week’s Brigada Today, we feature an interview with one of the prayer journey participants, Carole Dunlap [with a little help from her husband, Dave]. Carole works as a mobilizer with Team Expansion in Louisville, KY.

BT: Carole, you’ve now finished the second full day of your prayer journey here in Bosnia. What has been one of the highlights for you on the trip so far and why?

A: Hmmm. Worshipping with a Bosnian congregation, because there was an immediate fellowship there. Even though I didn’t understand the language, they were VERY friendly. Recognizing some of the songs and trying to sing along in Bosnian was a real highlight.

BT: How would you describe a drive through a typical Bosnian countryside road?

A: It’s just such a contrast of beautiful, breathtaking [scenery] and then destruction. One moment you look at something and you think, “This is just gorgeous!” Then you look another direction and the mixture of emotions is immediate — destruction is everywhere. After awhile you just quit asking why — you’re just sorry.

BT: Name an individual that you’ve met so far that you’re not about to ever forget and please tell us about that person.

A: Somebody I’ll never forget??? I guess it would be the little boy laying on the floor tonight [in a Bosnian refugee camp], because he represents all the little victims . . . and he didn’t have a choice. His little crippled body . . . . he was 28 days old when the mortar struck their house. His Mom was holding him . . . he rec’d brain damage. When we met him he was laying on the floor. When one of the team members stroked his little face, he just grinned from ear to ear. [long pause . . . ] His family loves him dearly. They all live together . . . all six of them in a one-room place. They were so proud of him. But he’s . . . . you know . . . I wonder if government leaders ever think of someone like that.

BT: Now you’ve seen some of the hard challenges. What kinds of things give you any hope . . . if at all… for Bosnia?

A: I think that they still have a dignity . . . I think that’s one of the things that the worship service this morning overwhelmed me with … the hope… Like the preacher said this morning, God shows himself strong in their weakness… There are long-term people [missionaries] here who have a passion for the Bosnians. You can see it in everything they breathe and say. And the warmth in the Bosnian people toward us. And I guess God really doesn’t allow us to give up hope for anybody.

BT: If you could take a spray bottle home . . . maybe bottle up some scene or some event that’s happened so far . . . what would you want to take home and spray all over your adult Bible fellowship, or your church or missions agency?

A: One of the workers here got a wheel chair for a little boy in a refugee camp. That little gal was so impressed by that act of love that she became a seeker. She carried that little baby down a rugged mountain road, maybe 3 miles, by herself, to find out why people are so good to bring her a wheelchair for her little baby — and she couldn’t figure out why they’d do it if they didn’t even know her! She carried that baby down that road to church . . . and she kept coming to church . . . and kept coming . . . and [long pause]. She’s a believer now . . . and she keeps coming. And tonight, she sat behind me… You saw her. She’s such a thin little girl… with four kids now and the fifth one due anytime. She’s been living there in that refugee camp for six years. Scripture says, ‘If you seek me you will find me,’ . . . and she found Him. And she’s got the most remarkable smile.

BT: Carole, is there any misconception about this place in particular that you hope you can help clear up when you return to the USA?

A: There’s nobody to really point a finger at. [long pause] I think that it’s not something that can be easily healed here. It’s not over. And none of us can pretend to think that we can come here and in 10 days have an opinion about something. It’ll take years… but there’s no way that we should pull out. If the Christians don’t stay here, . . . I mean . . . the healing isn’t going to come quickly. A general from SFOR spoke today in worship in Sarajevo. He said this is a marathon not a sprint . . . and he was right. People want to ask who was right and who was wrong. I think it’s just the evil that we all have . . . a rage gone to extreme. From what we’re hearing, it’s being fed . . . The only reason why the Serbs were beating up the Muslims was because they had the biggest guns at the time. I can’t begin to put this puzzle together. I’ve given up asking who did what and . . . my goodness . . . just trying to figure out how we can help. And the really sorrowful thing is that this isn’t limited to just Bosnia. It’s going on all over the world in one form or another. … and it’s the evil within all of us that we have to change.

BT: Anything else you’d like to add before we make the Internet connection to Zagreb and send out this email?

A: I’m just thankful that people are concerned enough to read and pray. Like the sign says in the picture of the bridge at Mostar, “Don’t forget.”

JOHNSTONE WRITES: THE CHURCH IS BIGGER THAN YOU THINK

Remember Patrick J. Johnstone of Operation World fame? Well, he’s been at it again! This past week I received a preview copy of THE CHURCH IS BIGGER THAN YOU THINK. It arrived just in time, too, . . . since I had to present a workshop at a convention in St. Louis on “Who’s left to tell?” My buddy drove the van out to St. Louis and, in route to the convention, all I had to do was convert Johnstone’s great stats and stories into a Powerpoint presentation! The workshop listeners loved it . . . Johnstone made me look terrific… and now I’m trying to give credit where credit is due. Here’s a book you’ll want to get. Order it from
Christian Focus Publications
Geanies House, Fearn, Tain,
Ross-shire, IV20 1TW, Scotland, UK

http://www.geanies.org.uk/cfp
Tel 01862-871-011
fax 01862-871-699.

In USA,
Spring Arbour Distributors
10885 Textile Rd.
Belleville, MI 48111
Tel 1-800-395-5599
fax 1800-395-2860.

But do me a favor, would you? Tell them Brigada sent you. I’ve been trying to negotiate a special price with them… but it’s not finalized. You’d better ask them before you order. Tell them you’d like the special Brigada pricing . . . and maybe they will have agreed to something by then! :-) Great book. 300 pages. Great index. Great bibliography. Good historical perspective… But it really shines on the task remaining. “Geographical, Urban, Social, Ideological, Spiritual, . . .” — Great stuff. And all the maps and diagrams are available in black and white or (as my friend Patrick would say) in “colour.” :-) Order those from WEC at IROatIOdotwec-intdotorg  (IROatIOdotwec-intdotorg)   or iroatopwlddotdemondotcodotuk  (iroatopwlddotdemondotcodotuk)  . (Contact them directly for pricing and availability.)

NEED TRAINING IN ISLAM AND/OR URBAN MINISTRY?

Have we got a deal for you! I just finished touring the Chicago Center for Urban Mission and it seems like just the ticket! Located in downtown inner-city Chicago, it offers a fully accredited Master of Arts in Urban Studies and/or Master of Arts in Muslim Studies via two-year (54 semester hours) residential graduate degrees. Students are required to live in the city, work a part-time job (and are assisted in raising support for their ministries), spend 2-3 days per week in “mentored ministry” in a church setting and attend classes one day a week. Although only graduate programs are available, those with less than a grad. degree COULD work out an audit program if the credits aren’t the end goal. In other words, they’ll work with you so you can focus on content as well as credits. The Center is located within easy reach of some 300,000 Muslims. Chicago is home for North America’s largest Islamic publishing and distribution company. The Muslim community there boasts five large K-12 schools, the American Islamic College, the East-West University, a dynamic Sufi Muslim movement, the Islamic Propagation Center and even its own cemeteries. It is also headquarters for the Nation of Islam and the American Muslim Foundation. Are we seeing a trend here? Chicago seems to be developing into THE city for such a center. So drop ’em a line and see that they can offer you — Robert Douglas is at DouglasRCataoldotcom  (DouglasRCataoldotcom)   should get their attention. They’ll try to answer right away. That’s the director’s address — and he gave permission for Brigada Today readers to approach him directly!

SO WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAD SIX MONTHS ON YOUR HANDS???

If you were Daniel and Paulina Brolin, you’d memorize scripture and exercise! According to Infobeat, a pair of Swedish missionaries kidnapped in southern Russia survived their six-month ordeal by exercising rigorously and memorizing Bible versus, an interview published Monday said. Daniel and Paulina Brolin said they were kept in a dim, unheated cellar since their abduction Jan. 8 and were not allowed to go outside. They said they followed a disciplined routine of physical exercise during their imprisonment. Paulina laughed in the interview as she told how she did some 2,000 buttocks exercises daily. When they were captured, the Brolins were carrying an English language Bible from which they spent hours memorizing long passages. They were released last week. For more info, see http://www.infobeat.com/stories/cgi/story.cgi?id=2554855310-cee Infobeat is a great news source, if you’re not already patched in. Visit http://www.infobeat.com for more information. It’s free and it’s emailed to you daily! If you don’t have access to the web, ask a friend or relative to sign you up and you can still hear the latest. JESUS VIDEOS HAVE ARRIVED!

Here’s a great thank-you from Matthew in Thailand! “Just wanted to let people know that I got the five free Jesus videos, two in English, one in Thai, one in Burmese and one in Mandarin Chinese. What a wonderful project and of such use over here in Northern Thailand. Thank you so much [to the Jesus Film Project and Campus Crusade!]. Evidently, Campus Crusade has “scratched an itch!”

PRAY FOR INDIA AUGUST 15

Several [Asian] Indians have asked that we join them in praying for India on August 15th. More on this later, as this plan shapes up. It’s evidently still in the formative stages.

THERE CAN BE AWAKENINGS . . .

Geoff wrote this past week to share this personal testimony regarding an encounter with an Iranian Muslim during his recent visit to Turkey. Evidently, one of Geoff’s friends “… ended up spending quite some time with him sharing who Jesus is and what he did. This man was completely blown away by the Good News. He couldn’t believe we serve God because he loves us, so we love him and serve him out of love. He said he had never heard the Good News before; that there was no one where he was from (Tehran) telling anyone about this. He then offered to pay the way for this member of our team to come to his mosque in Iran and speak so others could know about it! I don’t know if you want to share that testimony on your mailing list, and either way I hope it’s encouraging for you personally — I know it was for me! It made me realize that a country’s government may be closed – but the hearts of the people are VERY much open and hungry for the truth.” Before you ask… I’ll keep Geoff’s identity anonymous… but just join me in thanking God for openings and awakenings among the untold!

OKAY – SO MAYBE SABENA TRAY TABLE THING IS AN URBAN LEGEND

At least that’s what SEVERAL readers told me. (Reference last week’s item, “HOW TO ZAP YOUR LAPTOP ON YOUR NEXT FLIGHT.“) Check out http://www.sabena-usa.com/about_tips_trays.html if you want to see Sabena’s answer to the “legend.” I guess it’s not unlike one of those email “virus” messages that gets passed around the Net. It’s definitely a new “type” but just as deadly at sucking up bandwidth. So . . . bottom line . . . there are evidently no magnetic tray tables. It was someone’s idea of a joke! Thanks to all those who responded on this one!

WEB-WATCH

WebWatch For an example of the possibilities, check out: http:/www.sky-media.com where you’ll find a free Bible survey course on-line (using RealAudio) Note especially the Free Courseware section. In the New Testament course, there’s a teaching outline, along with discussion questions, etc., that can be viewed while you listen to the audio file. Author Evan Morgan wrote Brigada Today this past week, “We are capturing on digital video a library of “Master Teachers” which will be available on the internet as a free resource, or in CD-ROM/DVD-ROM, as a product for purchase. We have around 20 courses in the plans, and under God’s hand will have them available in the next 18 months. We also have an extensive list of internet resources, ranked by level of difficulty. Since we are located here in the ski country of Colorado, we ranked it using the ski slope metaphor (Green Circle (easy), Blue Square (moderate), Black Diamond (difficult). You will find it under the Internet Resources section.” Now there’s a new twist! Thanks Evan!

LOOKING FOR A RENTAL CAR FOR YOUR NEXT FURLOUGH/HOME SERVICE?

Try Missionary Auto and Truck Service, Mike and Jeff Nottingham, Richmond, Indiana, caratmatsdotorg  (caratmatsdotorg)   (Thanks Max!). Also, one reader said International Aid was a good resource. Ask for their booklet on agencies who rent cars for furloughing missionaries. Their e-mail address is intlaidatjunodotcom  (intlaidatjunodotcom)  . It would be great if someone could get it, convert it to a text file and send it in here for all to see (and we’d give credit to Int’l Aid of course).

BRIGADA IN THE NEWS?

Apparently more and more Brigada readers are mentioning Brigada resources in print! Thanks!!! Sam just informed us that we made the July/August Discipleship Journal. Apparently on page 111, we are listed among the short summaries of mission-oriented web sites. Thanks to whoever was kind enough to send it in! Please keep up the good work! We have no marketing budget — Brigada has no paid employees and is a totally volunteer-run, free service. So we appreciate any help you can give to spread the news so our family can grow!
--------------------------------------

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR ENCRYPTED FILES

Here’s a reader with a friend from North Africa who have neatly handled the encrypted attached file problem. See the problem is, once you encrypt an attached message (a mission newsletter, for example), then attach it to an email, it might raise the eyebrow of someone watching your email pass by their server. So, after encryption, this pair of friends changes the extension to .exe, .com, or .dll so as to reduce the suspicion that it contains encrypted material. Definitely shaken, but not stirred! :-)

KNOW ANYBODY WITH A MARKETING STUDY ON TV IN MISSIONS?

If so, George 100235dot2517atcompuservedotcom  (100235dot2517atcompuservedotcom)   would like to know . . . and he pledges to report any and all findings here on Brigada in a couple of weeks . . . so write him today if you have any leads! He’s specifically looking for “… some form of definitive study on the effectiveness of TV ministry in missionary context in areas such as the CIS, (Russia and Ukraine in particular) and … in the Muslim world at large. I am hearing statements at one end of the pendulum of ‘TV is the way to go rather than presence on the ground,’ then of ‘the uselessness of TV as a means to achieve any spiritual result.’ Can anyone provide George with anything objective?

“GIVERS” CONTINUE TO SEE TRAFFIC ON THEIR SITE

The Givers Ministry has moved vehicles, computers, musical instruments, school/bible school supplies, etc. to needy ministries, and they believe that the Lord is about to open the floodgates and bring a tidal wave of givers through their site. They wrote Brigada Today this past week, “It is our hope that by the end of 1998, there will be over 500 full-time, Christian ministries and their needs registered with the Givers Ministry, and that God’s abundance will be flowing like a powerful river back into His ministries.” For more info., write infoatgiversministrydotorg  (infoatgiversministrydotorg)   or see http://www.giversministry.org Remember, the site only deals with NON-monetary requests.

FORGET TO BUY YOUR DAD A FATHER’S DAY CARD?

Never fear! Blue Mountain is here! Lee (from the Missions Dept. at Parkland Chr. Ch. in Tacoma) recommends http://www.bluemountain.com for all your greeting card needs! He even sent one to us here at Brigada (Thanks Lee!!!). So I promptly hit the site to put together a romantic card for my wife. Two ladybugs later, I was enjoying the attention of my charming spouse. Quite effective, it was. Thanks Lee. :-) The cards are free, presumably a gesture of good will so you’ll want to buy their paper kind (like in the entry-way stores at Cracker Barrel Restaurants). In the USA, it’s Father’s Day today (my wife and kids got me new shin-guards — yahooo! Yahoo ) so if you’ve clean forgotten your papa, just put together a virtual card at Blue Mountain (but don’t count on it being quite as impressive as shin-guards :-)).

RENT-A-RIDE FOR YOUR NEXT FURLOUGH

It’s been a while since we asked for the best deals for furlough (or, “home service” as we like to say now) transport. If you’ve got a favorite rental dealer or leasing service, please send a note and a testimony to Paul Bostrom pbostromatshizuokanetdotordotjp  (pbostromatshizuokanetdotordotjp)  . He’s very motivated — since he has to rent beginning July 3rd from Portland for his own furlough. (Please send a cc: to <dlucasatteamexpansiondotorg> in case Paul’s email gets unplugged during his furlough!). Please make the subject line something like, “RENT-A-RIDE” so we’ll not miss it. We’ll put together a compilation and feature it in an upcoming Brigada Today.

HOW MANY BIBLES ARE PUBLISHED PER YEAR?

Here’s a missionary in Tanzania who would like to know if anyone has a record of the number of Bibles published in any given year. If you’ve got a lead or an answer, please send it to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg  (DougLucasatxcdotorg)  . Thanks!

DON’T FEATURE YOUR MISSIONARY’S PERSONAL INFO…

If your church or agency has a web site, Stan and others offer a word/warning to the wise: Don’t feature your missionary’s personal info (address, tel. number, etc.) on your site. Many feel that this could seriously compromise the missionary’s security. This is especially true in creative-access countries where open mission work would not be welcome.

IN HONOR OF THE WORLD CUP

Brian suggests you might want to play virtual soccer during half-time today . . . http://www.intel.com/home/football/index.htm?iid=mail+oc6& is the URL you’ll want to try. Looks to me like a great way for Intel to sell upgrades for its chips, though. The emphasis is DEFINITELY on faster processor speeds. Still . . . give it a try and see what happens! After all, with all the commercials during half time, time is one thing you’ll have on your hands! :-)
--------------------------------------

WAITING TO CREATE YOUR OWN HOMEPAGE???

Wait no more. Brian also came up with a great URL to speed along your start-up. Try http://www.intel.com/cpc/create/multimedia/index.htm?iid=mail+oc6& to get free software AND a free site (GeoCities) where you’ll be able to try your hand at your own webpage. Take a whirl for fun, for family, for friends, for furlough planning, for whatever you decide! (Thanks for the tip, Brian!)

HOW TO ZAP YOUR LAPTOP ON YOUR NEXT FLIGHT

Thanks to “KW” for this piece of [what could be] laptop-saving info. Apparently, two air travelers recently got more than they bargained for on a flight to Belgium on Sabena Airlines. They were laptopping along on their tray tables, seated in the bulkhead row where seats contain the tray tables in the armrests. During the flight, both their PCs began to experience problems, and eventually both laptops totally crashed. Apparently, the tray tables were magnetized so they wouldn’t make noises while stored in the armrests. The magnetized trays corrupted the hard drives of both laptops! Yikes! The aircraft was a new Airbus 340. Apparently, other manufacturers are aware of the potential nightmare and have elected not to use this “feature” in their designs. If you know a higher-up at Airbus, you might want to spread the word. Maybe that’s what Hell will be like . . . rows and rows of airline seating with magnetized tray tables that erase your laptops. Arrrrghhhhhh! Get me outa’ there! :-)

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM IRAN

Iran is very closed to traditional Christian missionaries, but Christian radio is making an impact. Thousands of response letters from all over Iran have been sent in. “Daniel,” an Iranian Muslim-background believer and the radio producer, says that even though the majority of Iranians profess Islam, most are searching for the truth and can find it in Christ. In a related story, through the month of May thousands of Christians from every time zone around the world made a “prayer wave” daily petitioning the King of the Nations regarding Iran’s peoples, cities and deep physical and spiritual needs.
(Source: Mission Network News, June 8, 1998, http://www.gospelcom.net/mnn/news-06-08-98.html )
Global Glimpse is compiled each week by John Hanna, Caleb Project, Littleton, CO.

FROM THE “OOOPS DEPARTMENT”

Oops… Last week’s item, “GOT A WINDOWS/CE DEVICE? GET NIV CEBIBLE!” carried an error. The new NIV Windows/CE Bible is NOT searchable. Rats. Thanks Chris!

NEED ENCRYPTION? TRY MIT

Chris wrote this week to make us aware of a service that MIT runs encryption on the fly. If your host country allows encrypted message and you would benefit from this service, maybe MIT is for you! E-mail helpatnymdotaliasdotnet  (helpatnymdotaliasdotnet)   to get the latest instructions on how to set up an encrypted e-mail forwarding service. Chris wrote, “We have this set up so that our missionaries can publish an e-mail address for supporters and other non-security-aware individuals. Mail sent to the address is automatically encrypted with PGP and forwarded to your REAL address where you can then decrypt it. You can encrypt mail with A public key and send it to the encryption server where it is then decrypted and forwarded on to the address you supply in the first line of the message. This has been a very good solution for our missionaries wanting to get mail from friends but having some real security concerns.” Remember there are at least a couple of concerns with this service. First, your host country might not appreciate or allow encryption. Secondly, it might raise, rather than lower, your profile. Third, the message they CAN’T see might attract more attention than the message they CAN. Fourth, you never know who is maintaining or administrating the server at MIT (could be someone who happens to be from your host nation). So be careful out there. Still… many are using this kind of service with good results so if it works for you, by all means give it a try.

FROM THE FILM-FOGGING DEPARTMENT

The debate continues on how to best protect your film from fogging during overseas X-ray exams (we’re talkin’ airports here . . . not doctors’ offices!). Dennis, a Director of the Photo Schools at the University of the Nations in Hawaii photoatuofndotedu  (photoatuofndotedu)   recommends trying for visual inspections by putting your film in clear film cases (Fuji, for example), bagged in clear freezer zip-lock bags. Not every country will allow it, but Dennis says he “prays a lot” and gets no film fogging since he’s instituted this approach.

AND NOW A WORD FROM A SPONSOR

This just in from Parkland, who recently helped sponsor the new year at Brigada: “Parkland Christian Church, Tacoma, WA, is still receiving E-mail and phone calls to thank us for the check that we sent to Brigada. These notes of Thank You were from one line up to 1 1/2 pages. These messages were from all over the world. I can’t began to express the feelings that were expressed by members of the Missions Department at Parkland over these messages. These messages made our day. Everyone was elated. You could have turned the lights out in our meeting room, and the brilliance of how everyone felt would have still made the room daylight bright. We spread the messages out on the table and prayed for everyone who had taken a few minutes to say Hello and Thank You and, we also prayed for the entire Brigada Family, for we are all one big family. Some people told of not getting snail mail, or having it received, and already read by someone, but the E-mail came through loud and clear. Most of the people told of how they valued receiving their weekly Brigada Today, and how they poured over it. Even though many articles did not and were not for their mission, they valued the articles as helping someone else. When an article contained something that was “for them” they were thrilled. The Missions department of Parkland Christian Church would like to tell everyone who sent messages, “Thank You!” We appreciate the time you took to send them. Some day we will all meet in Heaven, and we can tell you ‘Thank You’ face to face. May God Bless each and everyone of this great Brigada family.” (From Lee Higley, Chairperson, Missions Dept, Parkland Christian Church. Thanks Lee!!!)

[Are you putting together your missions budget for 1999? If God leads you to sponsor the Brigada family of networks, we would offer thanks to Him. Your gift would continue to help make Brigada a free service to all and you and your ministry or business would be featured as a sponsor on the Brigada web page and in Brigada Today. If you’re not the person who puts budgets together, feel free to pass this Brigada Today along to the people who do!]

Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us! See the note above if you’d like to submit items for Brigada Today. Thanks for understanding. Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.

UPDATED JOSHUA PROJECT 2000 LIST

Recent efforts for more timely updates and corrections to the Joshua Project 2000 list, have been fruitful. There are hundreds of changes from the original list of 1739, with some Peoples being added and some removed. AD2000 & Beyond Movement has printed an updated version of the list as of March 24, 1998. The new printed version identifies which Peoples are on the “updated” list, and which are from the “original” list. The hardcopy sells for $1.00 plus shipping and handling and can be ordered from infoatad2000dotorg  (infoatad2000dotorg)  .

The Joshua Project 2000 list of unreached peoples is not a fixed list. As new information becomes available, updates continue to be made, even since the above printing. For the most recent information, you may download the database from the AD2000 & Beyond web site: http://www.ad2000.org/peoples/index.htm

If you have verifiable corrections or updates, please send them to the list administrator, Dan Scribner danatad2000dotorg  (danatad2000dotorg)  . Dan’s making REAL changes. I recently submitted a verifiable recommendation to him and he and Patrick Johnstone answered personally, to verify the change. It took us an exchange of 2 or 3 emails but we finally reached a consensus recommendation and now the list is more accurate on Crimean Tatars in Ukraine. So send in your suggestions! They’re listening!

GET YOUR MUSLIM RESOURCE CATALOGUE

Thanks to Jim, a C&MA missionary in Cote d’Ivoire, known as “Mr. Resource” to all his friends, we recommend Sound Vision, tel. 800-432-4262 (if not in the USA use “Net2Phone”), email: getinfoatsoundvisiondotcom  (getinfoatsoundvisiondotcom)  . CARRY-ON SAGA CONTINUES

lighting the way Thanks to all who have written regarding the limit to carry-ons on British Air, Lufthansa, and similar airlines. Here’s the bottom line: Yes… enough is enough, and all of us who have been bombed by some fat carry-on would like to see in-cabin limits enforced. But at the same time, even British Air is not enforcing the limit equally. I just flew to and from African on BA and on each and every flight they gave me hassles regarding my carry-on even though it fit in their “sizewise” gauge. My problem was that it weighed 13 kilos and for some reason, since it was on wheels, it was a higher profile target for them to seize. So — if you have to carry on some materials and you’re flying BA, choose a backpack or shoulder bag, not a roller carry-on (like flight attendants all use). And… the easiest solution of all… if you like your roller carry-on, don’t use BA or Lufthansa if you can at all avoid them. They appear to be the ONLY airlines enforcing this policy.

LOOKING FOR A GREAT LAPTOP DEAL?

As always, check out all the ads in the latest edition of PC Magazine or equivalent. And in addition, here’s an example of a guy wanting to sell directly to missionaries: NOTEBOOK COMPUTERS! – Jetta Jetbook 7050 with 12.1″ ACTIVE MATRIX screen, AMD266 with MMX Processor, 48MB RAM, 3.1GB HDD, 20X CD-ROM, Windows 95 preinstalled. Also includes carrying case and one year warranty. All for only $1,817.00. For details call Bright-Line at 1-800-330-8474 or visit our website at http://www.bright-line.com — remember to check international repair centers on whatever you buy, to be sure you understand where it will have to be sent in case it someday needs service …. and they essentially will all need service someday. I just had to send my Dell Inspiron back for service … and service is probably what separates the men from the boys. So ASK!

WHERE IS IT ILLEGAL TO SHARE THE GOSPEL?

Check it out at http://www.state.gov/www/global/human_rights/970722_relig_rpt_christian.html and see if you agree with the rulings by the US gov’t (beware the fact that that’s a VERY long URL and you’ll probably have to splice it together after you paste it into your the URL box on your browser). ‘Course, just because it’s illegal to do public proclamation, that doesn’t mean that you can’t answer legitimate questions on a one-on-one basis!
