WHAT IN THE WORLD IS BRIGADA?

Brigada Logo Brigada, pronounced “bree-GAH-dah” (rhymes with armada), is the rough equivalent of a “brigade” — in Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, and even Filipino! The idea is to stand side by side to pass buckets of hope for those most in need of Christ’s eternal message! Check out nearly 5 years of weekly back issues at http://www.brigada.org. See recent back issues and links at http://www.eGroups.com/list/brigada-today. Brigada Today is compiled by Doug Lucas DLucasatteamexpansiondotorg  (DLucasatteamexpansiondotorg)  , Louisville, KY.

WHEREFORE ART THOU, PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW?

praying hands Okay. Confession time. I’m sure there must be plenty of publicity going on, somewhere, about Praying Through the Window (this month). For some reason, I’m not plugged in. Are you? Seems like we should be getting some kind of daily prayer reminders via email, right? Christian Information Network is expecting 50 million Christians worldwide to be joining in this prayer effort for the countries of the 10-40 Window. I just don’t know very many of them. :-( For info, visit their website at http://www.christian-info.com , or e-mail them at CINatcin1040dotnet  (CINatcin1040dotnet)  . Now that you know I’m a sinner — I hope I’ll get plugged in for at least the remainder of the month! :-)

REGISTER ONLINE FOR BRIGADAFEST 2000

Brigada Logo Now’s the time to register online for BrigadaFest, slated for Feb. 3-5 in Louisville, KY. This very focused get-together will serve as a venue for uniting those who have a vision for reaching specific people groups. We’re modeling it after the Pit-Stops car race pitstop we’ve been staging in various cities throughout the USA. Here’s what participants have been saying (I’m not kidding; these are actual quotes from participants!): “practical – excellent – great – awesome – very informative – wonderful – very inspirational – refreshing – useful – moving – very emotional for me – good to see how far we have come – let me know specifics – fantastic – met me at our point of need in our process – marvelous – encouraging to see progress of others – effective – enthusiastic – very helpful sharing mistakes – overwhelming – exciting – very positive – super – wow! – caused us to set a time to strive for and develop working plans – gave a scriptural basis & understanding of both the church & its role in mission – outstanding – spiritually uplifting – facilitators were very helpful – very organized – very hospitable – delicious meals – forced me to think & take initiative – exhilarating – wonderful focus upon our God – wonderful team-building experience between our churches.”

If you’d like to take advantage of this event as a venue for your unreached people group get-together for 2000 — and meet in concert with 20-30 other focused tracks, drop me a line at Dlucasatteamexpansiondotorg  (Dlucasatteamexpansiondotorg)   and we’ll do our best! We’ll provide the meeting room for your track, along with logistics for meals, housing, secure registrations by web, security, audio-visual equipment, etc. The works! The cost is $60 (if you register before Dec. 20). Register online by going to: http://www.teamexpansion.org then clicking on “Register for BrigadaFest”. Registration is a two-step process. First complete the form, then go to the secure page and pay the registration fee. For more information – or if you don’t have web access to register online – write the Registrar, Angela, at akeeranatTeamExpansiondotorg  (akeeranatTeamExpansiondotorg)  . The event is being jointly sponsored by:

  • Interdev (which has volunteered to lead sessions on partnership development),
  • Caleb Project (which has offered to lead an Advocacy Training track),
  • Southeast Christian Church (which has a weekly worship attendance of 12,000+ friendly believers and a passion to change the world for Him),
  • Friends of Bosnia and a dozen other unreached peoples tracks (so far) from around the globe
  • Team Expansion (seeking to serve as a catalyst for launching additional PACE Projects), and, of course,
  • Brigada.

After registering, send a message to brigadafest-subscribeategroupsdotcom  (brigadafest-subscribeategroupsdotcom)   to receive regular updates starting this week. And if you’re interested in interceding especially for the event, send a message to brigadafest-prayer-subscribeategroupsdotcom  (brigadafest-prayer-subscribeategroupsdotcom)   where the prayer meeting has already begun! Thanks to Terry BorkTerryataoldotcom  (BorkTerryataoldotcom)   for serving as a prayer coordinator for the event.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE AT THE POWER OF PRAYER

world globe Malawi’s Muslim Yao tribe was one of the world’s unreached people groups, but at the end of the 1980’s some churches began to pray for the Yao and they sent missionaries. Herbert Behrens reports: “Our Yao assistant took us to the local chief emphasizing that I should ask his permission to preach the gospel to the Yao. ‘He will ask you “What is your name, and what do you want from us?”‘. When he did I replied ‘My name is Herbert, and I have come to preach you the gospel of Jesus Christ.’ Pandemonium broke out with all of the elders speaking loudly at once. At last the chief gave permission. Later I learned that 20 years before, an African Christian named Herbert went to this chief and said the very same words. The chief gave permission to preach in the village square. Six people became Christians and were immediately killed by the villagers, along with the first Herbert. The Yao feared that the Herbert whom they had killed had returned from the dead to avenge himself.” The second Herbert Behrens happily goes on to report that 12 Christian churches have been planted in the region.

TRY THIS CHURCH PLANTING STRATEGY

Local bodies of believers have been started using the “Tri-C” formula of field work: Contact, Convert and Congregate. For one month in the summer, volunteers train and are placed in a Team to work for three weeks on field. After their “Summer of Service”, a trained Pioneering Pastor continues on-site with the results of the saturation evangelistic campaign. A church is planted!

The “Summer of Service” strategy, and training materials available, can be seen at http://www.i-rox.net.ph/churchplanting. Since 1986, the AG church and Berean Bible School at Roxas City have been planting churches throughout the Philippines and in Cambodia. They are sharing the resources that get runs on the board! Training materials in Microsoft WORD format are available on request, from Pastor Rey Calusay at farmati-roxdotnetdotph  (farmati-roxdotnetdotph)  .

NEED A LANGUAGE LEARNING RESOURCE? TRY LAMP

If you’re in the business for learning another language, better take along a LAMP book. In 1981, my wife and I were able to take the LAMP course directly from Tom and Betty Sue Brewster and I loved it!!! It taught me how to walk from store to store in the markets of Montevideo and 9 months later, I could carry on a relatively fluent conversation in Spanish. LAMP gives you most of the tools and skills you need to set up your own language learning approach. Couple it with an outgoing personality and within 9 months, working 8-10 hours/day among a host culture that speaks your target language, you can become fluent in just about any language on earth. It’s work — but guess what: It’ll help you become effective. Visit http://www.instantweb.com/l/linguahouse to learn more.

LATEST TROJAN CARRIES MICROSOFT “FROM:” ADDRESS

virus Seems you can’t trust anybody these days… at least you can’t trust the “From:” address in the email, that is. On Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 15, a Trojan email hoax appeared on the Internet. (Trojan emails carry attached files that do woeful things to those who execute them.) Learn more about this one at: http://www.microsoft.com/y2k/hoax/hoax2.htm or read the Network Associates write-up at http://www.vil.nai.com/vil/tro10358.asp. The way it works is you get an email from Microsoft (at least that’s what it looks like) offering you a free countdown file to the year 2000. Apparently, after executing the file, the writer of the hoax gets copies of your username and password. Gulp.gulp So again.. bottom line… “Just say no!” Don’t ever execute attached files. Period. Nunca. :-) And thanks for the tip, David, at Personal Computing, Inc. dporteratperscompdotcom  (dporteratperscompdotcom)  !

HOW DO YOU TAKE GOODS TO/COMMUNICATE FROM THE FIELD?

That’s what Larry Wincklesataoldotcom  (Wincklesataoldotcom)   would like to know. He’s getting his family ready for service overseas and wants to do it right. What kind of luggage or shipping containers do you use to take your goods to the field? Drop him a note and he’ll compile the results for all of us to read here at Brigada. Don’t forget to supply him with web sites or phone numbers if you’ve got a best supplier. Oh… and by the way… if you’ve got a favorite way of using the Internet to stay in touch with supporters, friends and family, throw that in too. He’ll collect that info. as well. Thanks!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM AN AUDIO WORLD

world globe Missions leaders write: “Gospel Recordings in its quiet way has, more than almost any other mission, cracked the granite bolder of global ignorance of God’s word.” … “Illiteracy, lack of resident believers or lack of missionaries speaking their languages did not prevent the truth being given to unevangelized peoples… This tool has often been the means by which totally unevangelized peoples first hear the gospel.” … “I have personally seen in 64 countries the effective ministry of this unique outreach. Millions upon millions of people today know Jesus Christ because of GRN, especially in the often neglected remote areas of the world.”

IT’S TIME AGAIN TO THINK ABOUT CHRISTMAS PRAYER CARDS

Every year I dreaded having to think about Christmas card preparation. I would see all the great prayer cards from missionaries all around the world and feel guilty because I couldn’t afford it, didn’t know how to do it, or just plain didn’t make the time. Then last year I discovered a great card-maker named Olympic. Check out a scanned in copy of the prayer card they did last year for our family at: http://www.teamexpansion.org/resources/occprayercards.htm Here’s my under-the-table motivation. This way you can see how beautiful my wife is. :-) I just sent them the text and the picture and they took care of the rest. They even sent me those double-stick magnets for the back so I could get “refrigerator space!”)! Trouble is… they’ve vanished from the web. Do you know of a great Christmas Prayer Card producer? If so, please post them to our “Links” site by going to: http://www.egroups.com/docvault/brigada-today/Links?autocreate=1

AN INTERNATIONAL CALL FOR PRAYER

praying hands The Missions Commission of the World Evangelical Fellowship will convene a global missiological consultation in Brazil October 10-16, 1999. The venue for these events is the historic city of Foz de Iguassu. The conference hotel is just a few kilometers from the Iguassu Falls, featured in the film, “The Mission,” which is the landmark where opposing 18th century global forces met and profoundly influenced the course of mission. This global gathering comes 25 years after the historic 1974 Lausanne Congress/Covenant that has so influenced recent missions history. The consultation will produce the “Iguassu Covenant”, a missiological statement that will help provide direction for the church and its mission as we enter the 21st Century. Some 170 missions practitioners and missiologists will attend from 54 countries. Organizers are calling on the Brigada family to intercede for participants as they seek the face of the living God and anticipate meeting Him on this strategic ground. For further information, a detailed program, or how to be a “virtual” participant via the Internet, write Bill Taylor at wdtayloratCompuservedotcom  (wdtayloratCompuservedotcom)  .

AD2000 MOMENTUM JUST KEEP ON GROWING…

Joshua Project 2000 logo Check ’em out…

  • The 10/40 Window: Getting to the Core of the Core
  • The Unfinished Task: It Can Be Done Joshua Project 2000
  • To the Uttermost Part: The Call to North India
  • The Arabian Peninsula: An Opening at the Heart of the 10/40 Window
  • The Horn of Africa: Challenge and Opportunity
  • The Maghreb: Ancient North Africa Yearns for Rebirth
  • The 35/45 Turkic Window: A Gateway to the Muslim World

These last couple of brochures (on North Africa and the Turkic Window) are simply breathtaking! Well worth the meager investment it’ll take to post them in the tract racks at your church and give your vestibule some real color and class. But don’t miss the in-depth content too — filled with needs and resources to meet them! Heartily recommended! Order for 50 cents each from infoatad2000dotorg  (infoatad2000dotorg)   or go to: http://www.ad2000.org And speaking of AD2000, the countdown continues. According to the researchers at AD2000’s Int’l Office in Colorado Springs (headed by Dan Scribner, the incredibly consistent, never-say-die numbers cruncher), here’s the current scoreboard:

  • Peoples on active JP list – 1594
  • Peoples on active JP list no Church of 100 reported – 1116
  • Peoples on active JP list no reported on-site Church Planting team – 542
  • Peoples on active JP list not targeted or “claimed” – 186

DYNAMITE VIDEO INTRODUCES YOUR KIDS TO UNREACHED PEOPLE

movie camera Okay… homeschoolers, Sunday-schoolers, youth-groupers, Junior churchers, VBSers, and especially pray-ers, HERE is a video you need to order. Caleb Project’s new Kids Around the World video on the 10/40 Window is a dynamite introduction to world religions and unreached peoples. It’s fast-paced and yet filled with content. Tonight, we watched the 10-minute video for our family devotions and my 10-year-old and my 13- year-old were riveted to the whole thing. (You think I’m kidding, right?) I think it would work equally well for a 4-year-old too, because it’s a fun video, as well as an informational one. And for $15, you won’t beat it — especially since it comes with a curriculum supplement for the educational-types. :-) You can even specify PAL format if you like! So browse today at: http://www.calebproject.org/reso.htm or email ordersatcprojectdotcom  (ordersatcprojectdotcom)   or even phone them at 303-730-4170 ext. 332. You’ll be glad you did. What a great way to kick off your October “Praying Through the Window” emphasis! Three cheers to Caleb Project! thumbs-up When I grow up, I want to work for those guys. :-)

HAVE YOU SEEN IGIVE.COM?

WebWatch If you work with a non-profit, you’ll probably want to. Eric was the guy who tipped us off this past week — from Sweden I think. You register, then search for your favorite charity and if it’s not there, you’re given the option to add it. iGive confirms that indeed, the charity is a non-profit (with a verifiable office in the USA or Canada, I think), then you set about to shop ’til you drop! For example, if you’re going to buy a computer from the Dell website, why wouldn’t you go to iGive first, then use it as your gateway into Dell. First, your favorite charity gets 4 cents when you just stop by the iGive home page, then when you buy the $3000 machine from Dell, your charity gets $15 more. Now granted, $15 isn’t all that much but, hey, you were going to pay the same price either way — so your charity might as well get $15 out of it, eh? :-) I tried it out, registered Team Expansion, and . . . it was painless! You can do the same for your mission or cause — then advertise it to your web shoppers. So if someone in your family buys their flowers now over the Net, why not do it via iGive!? Check it out… http://www.igive.com. Thanks Eric.
--------------------------------------

GRAFTING TOGETHER A LONG URL

WebWatch Remember that if you receive an extra-long URL (which has broken apart into separate lines in your email client’s viewing screen), you’ll have to paste it back together in your browser’s URL box if you expect to get there successfully. For example, if the URL is:
, you’ll have to first copy the line that begins with “http://111…” all the way through the section of 3s. Then paste that line in your browser’s URL blank. Next, copy the line that begins with “444555…” and paste that entire line onto the end of the 3s, making sure that you leave no spaces in between them in the URL box. Once it’s pasted in, you can hit enter and finally get to see the long-awaited page. Several readers had trouble with a site mentioned last week, even though the URL is accurate: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?tag=teamexpansiononl&path=ts/browse-books/12290 If you were one of the unlucky ones, try again, using the approach mentioned above. But if you still have trouble, just go to Amazon.com and search for their new Christian bookstore. Remember, the long version automatically helps Team Expansion if you buy . . . but the price of the book doesn’t rise an inch over what Amazon.com would normally charge. (See the next item for more about that.)
--------------------------------------

CONFLICTS OVER CONFLICTS OF INTEREST

Two people wrote in to caution me about reviewing products or directing people to sites related to the mission organization with which I work (Team Expansion). So… I pledge to be very cautious when there is ever any kind of possible benefit for the mission with which I work — and I’ll be open and forthright about it when and if future situations arise. Thanks for the feedback to keep me honest.

TRY THE CUBE AGAIN

lighting the way If you had trouble clicking on the URL for the Evangecube (“NEW TOOL FOR PRESENTING THE GOSPEL: EVANGE-CUBE” last week), try adding the “//” that I neglected: http://www.evangecube.org. (How do you spell “egg on my face?” :-) )

SPEAKING OF CHRISTIAN BOOKS…

books One Brigada participant wrote in to say, “Good to hear about Amazon.com developing a Christian site. But Brigada readers should also know about CBD — Christian Book Distributors — as well. For years, CBD has been serving Christians and really caring about our “market” ! During those years when most Christian bookstores were pricing things at “retail” (or above), CBD was providing true discount prices. If you haven’t gotten one of their catalogs, call (in the USA) 978-977-5000 or check their website at http://www.christianbook.com. (note there is no “s” after christianbook). There are other websites with VERY similar addresses, but CBD is the real thing!” Thanks Claudia & Stayton!

WebWatch Although it was invented in the USA, the Internet is rapidly becoming a global entity. International Data Corp. (IDC) has now predicted that before 2003 nearly one half of all Internet spending will be from outside USA borders. IDC estimates that 60% of the online population will live outside the USA by the end of 1999. Western Europe is the fastest growing market segment, with an astonishing annual growth rate of 138%. PATTERN-MATCHING

At Team Expansion, we had always resisted writing “policies.” Thankfully, we still resist writing policies. But we’re starting to see some patterns . . . some trends that are reoccurring time and time again. You know the type. Missionaries who start out working on language learning seem to adapt more effectively than those who don’t. Those who settle in with translators for the long haul seem to never make time to learn to speak effectively. And so on. So we’re looking for these patterns and we’re starting to make some recommendations and, after nearly 20 years of being in business, it’s about time! If we haven’t learned something after 20 years, then we’d have to be nuts! So does that mean we have more structure? Well, it depends on how you look at it. Yes… in that we’re asking new missionaries to start out in the field with language first before anything else. But at the same time, when it comes to shaping a strategy that works, we still rely heavily on the team in the field to set the stage. We help them by providing input through visits by consultants, or “coaches” (probably Frontiers coined that term in the missions world, don’t you think?). And we even get together our team leaders for a regular “summit” in one key location every 18 months. (Probably Frontiers invented that concept too.) But we still resist a highly structured approach, preferring instead to keep things relatively “flat.”

How ’bout you and your mission agency or church? What kinds of shifts or patterns are you seeing out there on the shifting sands of organizational culture? If you’ve got an opinion, send it to brigada-responsesategroupsdotcom  (brigada-responsesategroupsdotcom)   (you might have to join first by sending a note to brigada-responses-subscribeategroupsdotcom  (brigada-responses-subscribeategroupsdotcom)  ). OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.
