WHAT IN THE WORLD IS BRIGADA?

Brigada Logo Brigada, pronounced “bree-GAH-dah” (rhymes with armada), is the rough equivalent of a “brigade” — in Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Albanian and even Filipino! The idea is to stand side by side to pass buckets of hope for those most in need of Christ’s eternal message! Check out nearly 5 years of weekly back issues at http://www.brigada.org. See recent back issues and links at http://www.eGroups.com/list/brigada-today. Brigada Today is compiled by Doug Lucas DLucasatteamexpansiondotorg  (DLucasatteamexpansiondotorg)  , Louisville, KY.

BRIGADA FAMILY MAKES A SPLASH SHOWING THE JESUS FILM

movie camera According to one supplier of the Jesus Film (Keith), in the last 10 months he’s sent out about $250,000 worth of Jesus videos, about 2/3 of which came as a result of the Brigada family jumping on board with requests and follow- up. 92% have gone to the 10/40 window or 10/40 peoples. Keith wrote yesterday, “So, thanks for the chance. Many many conversions have resulted and literally hundreds of thousands have been exposed to the gospel. Amazing, huh?” I’d say. Thanks to Keith and his team for making the outreaches possible! Unfortunately, at least until Jan. 2000, his funding grants have dried up. Maybe after January we’ll be able to jump on board again! :-) 3 cheers for Keith and his group! thumbs-up
(Please don’t write for more details at this time. If he receives new funding, we’ll be sure to announce it here.)

30 DAYS MUSLIM PRAYER FOCUS YIELDS GODLY OUTCOME!

praying hands The 30 Days Muslim Prayer Focus continues to receive amazing testimonies from around the world. It was reported in a Reuters article that the last Ramadan was the most compassionate in 7 years. Many hundreds of prisoners were released from prisons in Palestine and Morocco as an act of forgiveness. “God has finally bestowed His mercy on us,” said Zeinab, a housewife from central Algiers. The dates for Ramadan are from 8 December 1999 to 6 January 2000. Will you too join millions of Christians in prayer for the Muslim world?

The 30 Days booklets are available in a variety of languages from some 40 offices around the world as both Adult and Kids version. And, taken from the original booklets, an e-mail version is also available. Designed to be easy to read and prayed through each day, the 30 Days Muslim Prayer Focus is truly one of the greatest global prayer movements of our time.

To receive the e-mail edition (especially designed for those who don’t have access to booklets), send any e-mail to join-30-daysatXCdotOrg  (join-30-daysatXCdotOrg)  .

To get a list of the nearest 30-Days distribution centre near you, check http://www.hfe.org/news/30dlist You can also click on “30 days” at http://ramadan.everypeople.net for more information. (Thanks Mike!)

Please pass this info. along to your friends, newsgroups, newsletters or add it to your web-site. Let us believe God for mighty things as we join together to focus on Him during this prayer time for the Muslim world, Dec. 8 – Jan. 6, 2000. (Thanks Ron, for all the info!)

    LONG DISTANCE WARS

telephone We continue to see long distance services duke it out for the lowest rates per minute in long distance and calling card time. Maybe the lowest I’ve seen so far comes from a company called ATN. 13.9 cents a minute, with 6 second billing. NO service charge or monthly fee. The card is free. Pay only for usage. Not a debit card or prepaid card. A true calling card. All calls to and from your home or office (including 800 numbers) only 6.9 cents a minute. You can sign up in the USA by calling 888-487-4732 toll-free. If you tell them EC Code 10689, the guy who tipped us off to this service (Dennis) probably gets a bit of credit. :-)

    GLOBAL GLIMPSE FOR THE PERSECUTED

world globe Millions of believers will be praying for the persecuted church on November 14 as part of the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. China continues to be one of the countries with the largest number of persecuted Christians. House church leaders there interviewed in August and September confirmed that the situation for unregistered Christians is extremely tight and increasingly difficult. Reasons include the recent crackdown on the Falun Gong cult, tight security surrounding the 50th anniversary celebrations of October 1, and the government’s renewed emphasis on spreading atheism. In Shanghai, many house churches have temporarily ceased meeting, or have sub-divided into even smaller cell groups and confirm that many Christians in the country’s interior have been arrested. In spite of arbitrary persecution, the house churches continue to grow.

HOW TO USE UP INTERNET BANDWIDTH IN THE NAME OF AFGHANISTAN

It keeps coming back, again and again. The request for prayer is noble… and honorable… and important… but the petition at the end is what makes it a bit questionable. The text says, “PLEASE COPY this email on to a new message, sign the bottom and forward it to everyone on your distribution lists. If you receive this list with more than 200 names onit, please e-mail a copy of it to : [sic] (Please send after every 200 names) Even if you decide not to sign, please be considerate and do not kill the petition. It is best to copy rather than forward it.” Unfortunately, there’s never an email address to forward it to. And if there were, what good would it do? What are we supposed to think — that by emailing Internet petitions to the government of Afghanistan, they’re going to stop mistreating women? I’ve been told they don’t even want to turn over prisoners for whom there are sworn warrants in international courts — why would they listen to emailed petitions? Once again, I’m afraid we’d better re-read the Brigada OPC protocol. When you receive an email asking you to forward it, make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. To get a copy of the full Brigada OPC protocol, send a message to opcatbrigadadotworldchurchesdotorg  (opcatbrigadadotworldchurchesdotorg)  . You’ll receive a one-page email via an autoresponder with more information about the OPC protocol and a list of websites where you can check to see if the alleged virus or other announcement is really a hoax. And, in case you were wondering, no, Bill Gates doesn’t have software that pays you if you forward any emails. :-) “A Lump of Coal” is a lie, there’s no free trip to Disney world, and, as far as we know, nobody’s liver has actually been harvested from an iced-down body in a bathtub. :-) Whew! Who thinks these things up?! :-)

SEQUEL TO THE ENGEL SCALE . . . “THE GRAY MATRIX”

With all the sequels these days, it’s no wonder Frank Gray has brought one out for the Engel Scale. :-) Seriously, the ‘Gray Matrix’ is a two-dimensional development of the ‘Engel Scale’ by Frank Gray of FEBC. The vertical axis represents knowledge of the gospel on the Engel scale of -7 to +4 (arranged with -7 at the bottom). But the new horizontal axis is ‘closedness’ to the left and ‘openness’ to the right — or antagonism to the left versus enthusiasm to the right, if you will. This does, literally, add a new dimension to understanding where a particular person or group stands in relation to the gospel. It is very valuable in analyzing the target audience of any form of Christian communication. An explanation is contained within a longer article on radio communication strategy, which also offers insight into other types of communication too. You’ll have to page down several times before you catch a glimpse of the scale.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR Y2K?

Don’t forget the list of sites below for Y2K readiness checks. Practically speaking, many mission organizations are advising their respective missionaries to have at least one and maybe two months of salaries on hand in advance of the calendar change. This is especially true in nations like Ukraine, where non-compliant embedded systems in the power grid might indeed drive power circuits crazy.

HOW MANY ARE DYING PER HOUR?

We recently asked for that stat, and here is the answer! (“ON THE HUNT FOR A STAT“) According to at least one source, the authoritative statistics come from the World Evangelization Research Center, chaired by David Barrett, author of the World Christian Encyclopedia. The web site with the current location of this statistic can be found at: http://www.gem-werc.org/gd/gd46.htm The short answer is, 31.1 million per year, on average, which works out to 85,205 per day, or 3,550 per hour, or 59 per minute, or about 1 per second. Thanks Justin!

But then, neither is your public library… and neither is Books-a-Million. But that doesn’t mean you can’t walk into your public library or a nearby book superstore and find something useful. So… before you throw out the baby with the bathwater, remember that eGroups is publishing 10,000 copies of Brigada Today each week! Here’s the flipside: Some of the folks that have set up eGroups discussions are really doing some pretty bad stuff. But that doesn’t mean you have to go scouting out their content. Just leave it alone and you’ll be fine. You won’t come under their influence and their content won’t somehow sneak into your mind. That’s my own opinion, anyway. Truth of the matter is, they still haven’t sent a single check yet, even though they keep saying that someday they will. But hey… I don’t mind. They’re hosting our discussions and publishing our weekly news update for free . . . and that’s great in and of itself. We’ll keep you apprised if they ever send a commission for the ad at the end. Maybe we’ll be able to take everyone out for ice cream! :-)

praying hands So, did Praying Through the Window (October ’99) flit by too fast for you? It doesn’t have to end on Oct. 31st. You can make your own “praying through the window” month . . . in November, or July! Thanks for the reminder Claudia & Stayton!

    LOOK WHAT’S HAPPENING FOR JAPAN

On November 8-11, 1999 over 150 missionaries. Japanese pastors and church leaders will gather for the 1999 Church Planting Institute National Conference. Some believe this will be the largest gathering of church planting missionaries in the history of Japan. The conference will be made up of over 40 mission agencies and denominations that are committed to a church planting movement in Japan. The conference will include worship, training, special speakers, fellowship, and resources to equip and support those involved in church planting ministry. Pray for the participants that God might work mightily and provide new answers for nagging problems in reaching Japanese and Japan. If you’d like more information about the conference, write Greg gfletcheratmissionjapandotcom  (gfletcheratmissionjapandotcom)  .

Brigada Logo Brigada, pronounced “bree-GAH-dah” (rhymes with armada), is the rough equivalent of a “brigade” — in Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, and even Filipino! The idea is to stand side by side to pass buckets of hope for those most in need of Christ’s eternal message! Check out nearly 5 years of weekly back issues at http://www.brigada.org. 1999 MEDICAL MISSION CONFERENCE

lighting the way And we do mean 1999! (How in the world did last week’s edition borrow a paragraph from last year’s conference info! I must have been sleep-keyboarding again! :-) ) The 4th Annual Medical Mission Conference will be held at Southeast Christian Church November 12 – 13, 1999, in Louisville, Kentucky. To me, this conference is the premier medical missions event of each and every year. I haven’t heard of anything that rivals its depth and breadth. Check out speakers, workshops, displays, missions orgs, and mingle with hundreds of like-minded med-types. This is the event. Southeast Christian Church’s new facility is located on Blankenbaker Parkway, just off the Blankenbaker Road exit on Interstate 64. Details for the conference including hotel information and conference registration are available on the conference web site at: http://www.medicalmissions.com or by calling Stephanie at: 502-253-8950 ext. 4725.

    GLOBAL GLIMPSE OF GOD’S POWER

world globe A Chinese man was angry when his wife returned late from a Christian gathering one day. He began to beat her with his belt and screamed that he would only stop when his belt broke in two. “Strangely, the belt broke right then…”, he wrote to the Christian radio station FEBC. “My wife didn’t hold it against me, but simply remained quiet. I was ashamed and unable to sleep, so eventually woke my wife and asked her to forgive me. I thought that God would most likely not accept such an evil person as me, but my wife told me that God loved me and would save all those who believed in him. I confessed my sins and prayed with my wife.”

TRY MYTALK AND GET FREE 2-MINUTE CALLS WITHIN THE USA

telephone Looking for a great way to get a free two-minute phone call into the USA? Try http://www.mytalk.com. You get a free email address, free toll-free number for voicemail, and you can even listen to your emails and reply — all via voice. The voice recognition is incredible. It’s fun just talking to the system! The main downside on the free two-minute call is having to listen to about 30 seconds of ads before making the call. Hey … that’s chicken feed if you’re getting a free call to anywhere in the USA! :-) I set up an email account and the only downside was it seemed to take forever for messages to show up in my inbox there. But maybe the site was just having a “bad hair day.” But then I tried the free phone call and was put right through, after the 30-second ad. Terrific! Thanks for the tip, Macon! (By the way, Macon just did a complete mailing using the eLetter service we previously mentioned (“YOU’VE GOT MAIL: ELETTER!“). He said it worked great!) By the way, as far as free voicemail only, Mytalk.com might have uReach.com beat in some ways — since there is apparently no limit on the amount of voicemail you can receive per month! However, it appears there is no provision for receiving faxes. Your choice… or do both — one for a toll-free fax number and one for a toll-free voicemail number! :-) Seems like these are great options for students away from home!!! Highly recommended.

REGISTER NOW FOR MEDICAL MISSION CONFERENCE

syringe On November 12 – 13, 1999, Southeast Christian Church will present its 4th Annual Medical Mission Conference. For detailed information about the conference, browse http://www.medicalmissions.com. Guess who they’ve got coming: David Thompson, a career missionary surgeon who works in Gabon, West Africa. He’s the guy featured in the unforgettable last 7 minutes of the Generation video that everybody’s showing these days (from Mars Hill Productions). Highly recommended. I’ve been using those last 7 minutes to close out one of the messages I’ve been preaching on Matt. 24:14. Gang… It’s powerful. The Elmers are going to be there too… (Duane and Muriel) as well as a ton of other workshop speakers and profs. They’re even presenting helps for raising funds for short-term mission trips. CME credits for physicians and CEU credits for nurses up to 5.5 hours will be available for taking this course. And guess what — there’s no registration fee! (However, a love offering will be taken.) For more information or for a brochure concerning the conference, call Stephanie Garling, 502-451-5317, extension 4725. Book your travel now — the “Breeder’s Cup” will be held in Louisville the same weekend as this conference. Stephanie Garling also has motel/ hotel information available for participants.

Recently acquired by Sun, it’s attracting an increasingly loyal following. There are at least two major differences though. You need 500MB of space for MS Office and only 65MG for StarOffice. And the Bill Gates version will set you back a few hundred bucks. StarOffice is free on the web. Get it today. Just browse http://www.sun.com/staroffice.

    “THANKS” JUST ISN’T ENOUGH!

Thanks to all those who have chosen to try out Netcom/Mindspring. Recently we pointed out that if you were looking for a new Internet Service Provider anyway, why not try them at 1-888-MSPRING. We trumpeted their great customer support, fast throughput, and points of presence (POPs) all over the USA in just about every city imaginable — plus cheap toll-free access for rural areas too! And they’re hooked up with a service that lets you do “global roaming” called GRIC so… just about wherever you go in the world, Netcom is there! You had to say “I’d be happier using MindSpring” to the sales representative. They then credited your account with a bonus — $60 if you signed up before Oct. 1st, but you still get $20 even if you sign up tonight.

TIRED OF MICROSOFT WORD 2000’S CHANGING MENU-SCAPE!???

I am. Yikes. gulp Just when I think I’ve got all the menu choices to show up, Word goes and hides ’em again! Well, here’s how to get rid of Office 2000’s “feature” that hides your seldom-used menu choices. Just choose Tools|Customize, then Options. Uncheck the box labeled “Menus show recently used commands first.” While you’re there, want to turn off that dastardly Office Assistant? Clippie or whatever? First time I ever considered homicide. :-) He seems so . . . smug! What were they thinking? At least he could lose the condescending attitude… along with the menus. Why develop all this power… then hide it from us because it’ll seem too “overwhelming” to look at such a powerful program! So… just choose Tools|Options, then click on the Options tab, uncheck “Use the Office Assistant.” Man am I glad to get rid of him.

In other words, say there are 3000 Asians living in the neighborhood next door to yours. Where can you go on the web to “take lessons” in how to befriend them? Where could you go to find out about Buddhism, or Hinduism, or Islam for that matter? Send your best pointers to him and please send a carbon-copy to brigada-responsesategroupsdotcom  (brigada-responsesategroupsdotcom)  .

note (Note that this is one group you don’t have to “join” first in order to copy it. The messages go right on in without the need for subscribing.) Doug Salser will compile your best shots into a report for us here.

Granted… they don’t have access numbers in all cities yet (like, for instance, none in Louisville, KY, where Team Expansion is based and where I live!), but if it meets your needs, . . . hey… can’t beat the price. SUBMITTING CONTENT — To submit content or ideas to Brigada Today, first please get a copy of “Guidelines for submitting items to Brigada” Then, once you’ve composed your item in keeping with those guidelines, send your item for Brigada Today to DLucasatteamexpansiondotorg  (DLucasatteamexpansiondotorg)  .
Thanks to for hosting the Brigada mailing list.
Emphasis is placed on items relating to unreached peoples and challenges faced by those reaching them cross-culturally.

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us! See the note above if you’d like to submit items for Brigada Today. Thanks for understanding. Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.
