GET YOUR FREE COPY OF THE JP 2000 LIST TODAY

If you’ve got Adobe Acrobat Reader (free on the web), click to http://www.ad2000.org/peoples/jpllist.pdf for a free copy of the JP 2000 list. It’s the most up-to-date version available, straight from Dan the Man at AD2000 & Beyond in Colorado. Also, here’s the May update on our progress in seeing a church for every people…

  • Peoples on active JP list – 1592
  • Peoples on active JP list no Church of 100 reported – 1110
  • Peoples on active JP list no reported on-site Church Planting team – 525
  • Peoples on active JP list not targeted or “claimed” – 253

Again, I won’t try to hide the fact that I’m disturbed… Disturbed that with only six months to go, we still have 1/3 of the list with no reported church-planting team on site and 20% of the list still “unclaimed!” If you’re interested in tackling a people group on the JP2000 list, click to http://www.ad2000.org and see how you can help today.

A VIDEO TO TRY

movie camera Hey… if you’re searching for a new video to try, check out “Transformation, Prayer is Changing Cities,” written up at http://www.down-to-earth.de. Highly recommended by one reader, Mary Kay. I haven’t seen it yet, but judging from the praise in her note, relayed to us by Eric, it’s got to be a great one!

VIRUS HELP FOR OUTLOOK USERS

virus Hey… do you use Outlook or Outlook Express? Avoid Trojans all together. Turn off the preview pane. Open Outlook or Outlook Express and click on the “View” menu, then unclick “Preview Pane” as an option in Outlook. Outlook Express users will need to go through the extra step of clicking on the “Layout” menu first, then unchecking “Use Preview Pane.” Trust me… the folks in your address book will be glad you did. :-) Thanks Sharon!

GET A GREAT VIDEO AT A GREAT PRICE

movie camera Reader Paul recommends asking for a missionary discount at Gaither Music. They might just volunteer to send free videos instead! Paul wrote, “I asked if it was OK to tell other missionaries about this. Julie Etchison replied, ‘We would be happy for you to tell your missionary friends about our complimentary products. Please be sure to tell them that if they need PAL format, they should specify that information at the time of request.'” Can’t beat that! You can find a listing of their products at http://www.gaithermusic.com. To request a video, write: Julie Etchison jetchisonatgaithermusicdotcom  (jetchisonatgaithermusicdotcom)  . Thanks much Paul!

THE BACKPAGE: PLAYING WITH FIRE

[Today’s “Backpage” editorial is guest-written, in a way, by my good friend and colleague at Team Expansion, Chris Bushnell. Chris is our VP of Personnel and he just returned from a trip out of town. He sent me the note below just prior to boarding his return flight. I asked and received permission to share the email with you, but I’ve changed the names because it’s the principle I’d like you to hear about . . . not the person]

“Hi Doug. John and I had a powerful time today. I took him out for Mexican (his favorite), and we started talking. We talked during lunch and all throughout the 18-hole golf round. We kept talking … Actually he did almost all the talking – and I did the listening.

“It is so sad. He knows that his choices ruined his 18-year marriage – and the 20-year marriage of Louise, “the other woman.” He knows his kids will carry scars for life, as will Louise’s kids. He knows his decision four years ago has hurt many people. Four years ago, that is when he and Louise met and found in each other a spark that had been missing in their marriages. For four years they continued to feed that flame instead of fanning the flame in their own marriages. They kept it a secret. He says he just couldn’t bring himself to confide in me – but wishes he had. Those times he and I talked – and I asked how he and Jackie were doing with their marriage. He knows that just maybe he could have prevented the heartbreak if he had said “help.” He chose otherwise. And now, it’s too late.

“Today, he cried on the 10th hole when he thought about the way Jackie’s father hung the phone up on him, when he thought about the way his brother said, “I use to admire you,” how some dear friends wrote him and said, “Never call or write us again, you are scum.” How he will only see his kids a few times a year – and he missed all their soccer games this Spring. He knows he deserves it.

“We talked about grace, about sin, about learning from our mistakes, we talked about the need to keep the romance alive in our marriages, we talked about the endless capacity for selfishness and sin of the human heart and our need for accountability in our lives. We prayed together.

“John is paying the price for his mistake. Meanwhile the Evil One has laid claim on two more marriages. That scares, angers and saddens me. Tomorrow morning I am boarding a plane for Louisville. I am flying home to my sweet and beautiful wife. I can’t get there fast enough. Chris”

Hey… this is serious stuff. We’re playing with fire. Let’s realize that the people we meet are God’s children. I need to pray about it… and ask for courage. You do too. It’s too easy to forget that Satan wants to sift us as wheat. He’s a roaring lion. No one is exempt from his grasp. Let’s pray that we can reach a point at which we treat married women with respect and single women with the dignity and nobility they deserve… as God’s children. If we truly love them… truly… then we’ll want to love them in a truly right way… even if that means laying what feels good aside, and going through the motions of obedience, even if some of the feeling is gone at times. If “John” would have done that (in Chris’ note above), maybe he wouldn’t have helped rip apart two marriages. And another thing… remember that it’s not too late to start trying to do what’s right, even if you’ve made mistakes. Thank goodness we have a God who forgives. Pray for your mate… pray for anyone you’ve wronged… and pray for strength if and when you ever have the kinds of feelings that “John” had for “Louise.”

gulp Yikes. Be careful. It’s a jungle out there.

books John M. O’Malley’s ‘must-have’ book list (originally mentioned in ‘MUST READ’ BOOK LIST” in the 12 May 1999 edition of Brigada Today) has moved to http://ourworld.cs.com/mrjohnomalley. THE KUI OF THAILAND

People Teams An unreached people group in Thailand’s Northeast region (Isaan), the over 500,000 Kui do not know Christ. They are most known for their elephant hunting abilities. Less than 10 villages have Christians, leaving hundreds more with no witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Kui are animistic in religion and culture, yet Thailand’s national religion, Buddhism, is instrumental in keeping the Kui blind from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, pray for victory in the spiritual battle where the Kui are engulfed with animistic beliefs and the entrapment of Buddhism. Please pray for the production of a Jesus Film in the Kui language. Remember Kui Christians and pray that they would fervently share their faith, despite criticism. THE BACKPAGE: A CHRISTIAN LEADER FOR THE LORD

I’ve told you about how I’m just back from a Muslim nation in Africa. While there, I came across a young believe we’ll call Isaac [not his real name]. The story of how he came to know Christ is awesome. It all started when a gal from Sweden began serving at an orphanage some 20 years ago in his homeland. After years of laboring there, she was forced to evacuate when tensions arose in her town. It tore at her heart though! Who would take care of the children? Not knowing what else to do, she spent her last 4 days training one of the more mature young men, a 19-year-old, to become the director. She had taught him from age 12. For over 7 years, she had invested in prayer, Bible story-telling, and love. Now, only time would tell if he could pull off this challenge. With some 85% of the city destroyed, she had to escape.

Years later, she came back to the orphanage. The young man was much wiser, much more experienced, and . . . a very successful children’s home director. That young man was Isaac. Through her simple gospel testimony, many prayers, and years of witness, he accepted Christ. Now he’s 30 years old and his testimony is a powerful witness to other Muslims in his land. He’s taken part in special training programs and, through God’s power, about 20 other Muslims have become believers! So his group just might represent the world’s largest worshipping body of his people group — in the whole world! (Of course, there are probably only 4 or 5 “churches” from his people group anywhere in the world, as far as our research shows so far.) That makes this a Muslim “mega- church” for his group! :-) Praise the Lord for the faithfulness of that worker from Sweden!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE: TWO BANDITS FOUND JESUS

world globe “On the return journey after a seminar two and a half hours from Jayapura, we were held up by a number of young men demanding money. They told us that they would destroy our vehicles if we did not pay. We opened the window and gave them some money. One woman in the car asked one of the men ‘Do you go to church?’ ‘Where are you from?’ was his astonished reply. ‘From a seminar about the Kingdom of God,’ she told him. He replied, ‘Why don’t you hold the seminar here. Then we can be freed from our drinking.’ As he said that, I got out of the car, called him to me and asked ‘Do you want to be freed from drinking?’ ‘Yes,’ he said. ‘Do you know that you are a sinner?’ ‘Yes’. ‘That you need forgiveness?’ ‘Yes’. I then told him about what happened on the cross, and asked ‘Do you accept that for yourself? Do you want to be freed? Then let’s pray!’ He knelt of his own accord in the middle of the road. I knelt with him and started to pray. He gave his life to Jesus. His deliverance was visible; his body relaxed noticeably. We stood up together. He was a little ashamed of what he had done in the middle of the road, but bowed his head and hugged me. When we were done, one of the others was waiting to pray with me too. We left the bush with joy – two bandits had found Jesus!

THE BACK PAGE: OPC PROTOCOL CAN WORK FOR YOU TOO

OPC logo Thanks for the great mail we get from time to time here at Brigada Today. In today’s “Back page” editorial, we’ll feature a note from a guy who is using Brigada’s “OPC Protocol.” (To get your own copy, write to opcatbrigadadotorg  (opcatbrigadadotorg)   and a copy will be sent to you automatically.)

“Just a note to let you know how much I appreciate someone at Brigada drawing up the OPC Protocol. I have been using it and forwarding it to those from whom I used to get streams of unsolicited forwards of forwards — some as many as 5 or 6 headers.

“When I get those I send the person from whom I have received the e- mail the entire page of the protocol. I received the an urgent prayer request from a missionary in South America concerning a missionary in Africa URGING me to send it on to my address book. I did not, and two days later he send another e-mail titled ‘Well, shut my mouth’ and included all the corrections to the rumor that had started circulating that had been sent him from the board of the man in Africa. Several weeks later I received the same original message from someone in Wisconsin. I sent them both the protocol and the man in Wisconsin the correction.

“Just this week I received the e-mail from someone in our church about a girl in PA that had cancer and was not expected to live. Before sending it on I checked with the first sender of that multiple forward and found that the matter was 18 months old, and God had indeed answered prayer for the girl. If you are interested in the story check their web page www.sunlink.net/~stefo/. That web page has had 84,920 hits since 05/06/98.

“Everyone that I have sent the protocol to seem to appreciate a mechanism to help them out too. I hope that is OK.”

Joseph — from Newark, Ohio [end]

That’s very okay, Joseph! Thanks for using the OPC protocol!!!

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us! See the note above if you’d like to submit items for Brigada Today. Thanks for understanding. Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.

THE COUNT: JP LIST UPDATE FROM AD2000

Joshua Project 2000 logo Here’s the count… Let’s start praying in earnest about how we can find folks to lay claim to the last 254 people groups that no one has adopted for the purpose of church planting. (Thanks to Dan for this update!) And once again… may I say that I find this list very disconcerting… since so many of us prayed for “a church for every people” (and we were asked to define that as a church of 100 people) on the Joshua Project list . . . and it appears that approximately 2/3 of the task has not been completed. Rats. rats face :-( I guess we need to set our sites on the future… Who will help us focus on finishing the task!

  • Peoples on active JP list – 1592
  • Peoples on active JP list no Church of 100 reported – 1116
  • Peoples on active JP list no reported on-site Church Planting team – 526
  • Peoples on active JP list not targeted or “claimed” – 254

THE BACKPAGE: “YOUR HELL IS BETTER THIS HEAVEN”

I’m “out of Africa” now, having just arrived back in Louisville last night. It was great to see the wife and kids again. They’re great friends… and some of the people I met on this trip are now super friends too. Some I just can’t get out of my mind. I was there trying to help our organization link with others to help refugees in an area that is war-torn and ravaged by famine, conflict, and human tragedy. There was one young man whom we’ll call Mohammed. He said, “I saw all the bad things my people had done to each other. Yet, they all considered themselves good Muslims. Then I saw — even during the very civil war itself — Christian people from the USA and other Christian lands, trying to help us. All the warlords and Muslim religious leaders were telling us what bad people the Christians were, and that we shouldn’t listen to them if they try to tell us about Jesus. The Muslim clerics told us all these Christians were going to Hell and that only Muslims were going to Heaven. Then I’d hear gunfire in the night, outside my bedroom window.” Then he turned to me and swallowed hard. “I finally decided that if I had to make a choice, it looked like your “Hell” was better than the “Heaven” to which I was headed.” Today, Mohammed is helping write radio messages for the only Christian radio program being beamed into that Muslim region. Please pray for him and for all those who will hear the messages he’s helping to prepare. Thanks!
