JP2000 LIST TO BE FULLY “CLAIMED” BY MID-YEAR 2002

Joshua Project 2000 Thanks again to Dan Scribner, the data guy at AD2000 & Beyond for all the number crunching he’s doing in keeping track of the roughly 1500 groups on the Joshua Project 2000 list. In his October summary, he listed…

  • Peoples on active JP list – 1583
  • Peoples on active JP list no Church of 100 reported – 1096
  • Peoples on active JP list no reported on-site Church Planting team – 499
  • Peoples on active JP list not targeted or “claimed” end year 2000 – 233
  • Peoples on active JP list not targeted or “claimed” mid-year 2002 – 0

That last line is particularly promising. At the recent Strategy Task Force meeting in Amsterdam, 8 major ministries agreed to tackle the remaining untargeted groups by mid-year 2002. Though it doesn’t answer the initial challenge (a church for every people by the end of the year 2000), it at least suggests that someone will attempt to take responsibility for all these remaining groups within the next couple of years. Bravo to those groups . . . and bravo to AD2000 & Beyond! If you’d like a copy of the complete list of people groups, go on the web at http://www.ad2000.org/peoples/jpllist.pdf.

note Note: You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader (available free on the web)

SOMEBODY AT PEOPLETEAMS READS BRIGADA

People Teams Okay… it’s confirmed… somebody at PeopleTeams reads Brigada. :-) In the Oct. 13th edition of Brigada Today (“PEOPLETEAMS NOW CONNECTING HUNDREDS OF MISSIONS SITES/PEOPLE“) we made a crack about how Brigada wasn’t listed in their “Toolbox” page and, lo and behold, this week they’ve added it! :-) Maybe this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship! :-) Seriously, we continue to be impressed by the networks they’re building. They’re now getting 100,000 hits each month and the majority of those readers are staying at least 3 to 4 minutes. I like their focus on working with local Christian leaders, their emphasis on developing partnerships, and guess what else — you can put in peopleteams.com, .org, or .net! :-) They set up new accounts in 48 hours flat… and they have tech support folks on call 24×7. Best of all, you can set up a new forum there for your own missions network for free by clicking to: http://www.peopleteams.org/form.html. Maybe the dream of Brigada-like sub-conferences will never be dead as long as peopleteams is alive! :-)

BIOLA GRAD WORK IN EUROPE

graduation cap Biola University and Greater Europe Mission wrote us this past week about their new educational partnership that will allow missionaries in and near Europe to receive quality education, training, and mentoring while they are engaged in their field ministries. Missionaries will be able (pending final accreditation approval) to earn either the MA degree in Intercultural Studies or the Doctor of Missiology degree entirely in Europe without the need to take classes on the Biola, California campus. A wide range of electives and degree emphases are possible in areas such as church planting, cross-cultural education, leadership, TESOL, apologetics, spiritual formation, Islamics, counseling, theology, and missionary care. The first classes will be held the fall of 2001 in Kandern, Germany, and subsequent classes will be offered on a January – end of May schedule each year. Students who study in Germany receive an automatic 1/3 tuition reduction. For additional information, write Steve SBeckatGemissiondotcom  (SBeckatGemissiondotcom)  .

NOT JUST ANOTHER BIBLE CD

Bible From what readers are telling us, Ken Hamel’s latest version of Online Bible is not “just another Bible CD.” And guess what — we’re hearing grand things about the MAC version. (Almost thou persuadest me. Almost :-). But for now, I’ll stick to my Dell 3800. :-)) What’s more, he reportedly gives big-time discounts to overseas missionaries. (Someone said 50% off at times!) So if you’re in the market for a PC or MAC version of your old Thompson Chain Reference, but you want 150 commentaries and study books on the same CD, give a look to Ken’s work. http://www.bythebook.com and follow the links. You can even start out with the old King James version as a free demo! (Thanks for the tip, David!)

MUSLIM STUDIES AT COLUMBIA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY

graduation cap Now you can get a graduate degree, made up of core courses on Islam, while choosing to study during the regular academic year, Summer Studies, Winterim (January) and/or by extension. Check them out for courses like “Church Planting Among Muslims,” Greg Livingstone, January 8-19, 2001. Columbia Institute Of Muslim Studies runs July 9-August 3, 2001. There you can get Introduction to Islam (Steve Johnson); Folk Islam (David Cashin); Muslim Evangelism (Phil Parshall); Apologetics for Muslim Ministry (John Gilchrist); Islam in America (Carl Ellis); and Revelation, Qur’an and Muslim Tradition (Sam Soloman). Brochures are available from muslimstudiesatciudotedu  (muslimstudiesatciudotedu)   or by calling 800-777-2227 x3325. Or find them on the web at http://www.ciu.edu/programs/sem_ma_muslim.htm.

INSURANCE TO ASSURE FOR SURE

If you’re planning on traveling or living overseas, remember to check with your insurance provider first, since many policies specifically do not cover folks while they’re abroad. One provider who specializes in that coverage is World Outreach Christian Ministries, Inc. Ask about their Global Medical Insurance plan, complete with a complete package of U.S. style benefits including worldwide coverage designed for foreign nationals & expatriates, US $5 million lifetime coverage, emergency medical evacuation, and even coverage for repatriation. In the USA or via Net2Phone, call 800-641- 4614 or find them on the web at http://www.internationalhealthins.com

CHEAP MICROSOFT PROGRAMS FOR CHARITIES

Microsoft Windows According to an ICCM release http://www.egroups.com/group/iccm Microsoft has a new program available to 501(c)(3)charities, including religious organizations and the pricing is in many cases deeply discounted. For example, you can get Office 2000 Professional (Word/ Excel/ PowerPoint/ Access/ Outlook) for $65 for the full version, not an upgrade. This is a license to use the software, so you need to buy the Media Kit (installation CD’s) separately for about $30. But you only need to buy one, and then you can install it on as many computers as you buy licenses for. This is available from a number of different sources, e.g. Consistent Computer Bargains, http://www.ccbnonprofits.com/ in their information/product/flyers/current/MSMOLPE.pdf (Thanks for the tip, Tony!)

MORE ON ONLINE BIBLES

Bible In the list of online scripture (last mentioned in the Oct. 13th edition, “MORE FREE ONLINE BIBLES”), we didn’t mention http://www.sbible.hotmail.ru which offers free downloadable translations of the Bible in Russian, Ukrainian and Slavic, as well as the KJV, the Luther Bible in German, and a Russian Bible dictionary, and more. (Thanks Sergej!) Also, Doug suggests we check out http://www.netbible.org with great study helps and the new online New English Translation (NET) Bible. It’s the first Bible to be placed online while in the process of being translated, and it includes translators’ notes as to why they chose the words they did. Great resource site.

WORLD’S FIRST ‘LIFE OF CHRIST’ IN AUDIO

cassette ASI has just completed what is probably the world’s first, complete “Life of Christ” in audio from a harmony of the Synoptic Gospels. ASI has put together a beautiful, accurate “Life of Christ” in an attractive three-cassette album. The genius of this arrangement is that everything said in the three gospels, (Matthew, Mark and Luke) is arranged on the tape as is done in a printed harmony of the gospels without duplication of the parallel passages. The narrator is Dan Wagner, reading from the beloved King James Version of the Bible. For more information contact Audio Scriptures International in California at: asi-caatxcdotorg  (asi-caatxcdotorg)   or at P. O. Box 640634, Escondido, CA 92046 or go to the web at http://www.audioscriptures.org.

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us! See the note above if you’d like to submit items for Brigada Today. Thanks for understanding. Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.

DO YOUR INVESTIGATION – TRY “CALLBACK”

Using a callback service, you can save a lot of money on your international phone bill while traveling overseas. You can use Callback from any country to any country and it also works with your mobile phone and fax machine. For example, try Phone-Access http://www.phone-access.com who provides Callback through Access Authority. Example of rates for calls from the USA to these countries (“cents/minute” rates):

Untied Kingdom 12
Germany 19
Australia/New Zealand 14
Taiwan 23
Philippines 36

The rates are the same no matter which way you call – and the flat rates are good, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For all other rates please see http://www.phone-access.com. And as a rule of thumb, the longer away you call the greater the saving!

You only pay for what you actually call. It’s free to sign up. There are no deposits required, no monthly minimum charges or other “hidden” fees. Along with this service also comes a great traveling feature where you can use this service and save money even as you’re traveling. Callback can also be used as a non pre-paid calling card when traveling in North America. The current rate when calling within the USA is only 12 cents per minute! Sign-up can be done online on a secure server, the service comes with other features such as speed dialing, forced dialing and language options. You can even to use your computer to trigger a callback over the Internet. To learn more about Callback, how it works and how to sign up online please visit: http://www.phone-access.com or write infoatphone-accessdotcom  (infoatphone-accessdotcom)   with any questions that you might have.

MISSIONARIES CAN RECEIVE SUPPORT THROUGH IN JESUS DOT COM

WebWatch There’s a new website that offers missionaries a way to receive donations from their supporters via the Internet. As opposed to most other websites that rely solely on credit card transactions, InJesus.com offers online checking (or Electronic Fund Transfers–EFTs). The enrollment process to SEND money is quick and simple–just have your checkbook in hand. The process to RECEIVE money is a little bit trickier (only because of government regulations on tax-deductible organizations), but InJesus.com handles a lot of the administrative stuff for you (like sending receipts for tax-deductible gifts to the donor) so it’s worth a little extra effort. See them at http://www.InJesus.com. Get this — they apparently already have over 4200 ministries using the service, with a total of 27,000+ people online in community! Whew! The only hitch (and granted, it’s only a small one) is that they ask $2 per transaction (this transaction fee drops with volume), but I figure that’s minimal compared to not getting the donation at all! :-) Just for fun, see the Brigada page at http://www.brigada.injesus.com.
--------------------------------------

IN JESUS DOT COM’S “COMMUNICATIONS ENGINE” WORKS FOR MISSIONARIES

WebWatch InJesus.com gives missionaries a “communications engine”. It’s quick and simple to use. To make the “engine” work, missionaries fill out a form to set up a “website”, add their email list, then use another form to publish updates, news, requests, etc. Those updates are posted to the “website” AND delivered to the missionary’s email list. The benefit is combining long-term exposure of a document on the Internet with the immediacy of an email. InJesus.com is extremely interested in serving missionaries better in the areas of communications and giving and would welcome your input, suggestions, and constructive criticisms. Contact them via email at feedbackatInJesusdotcom  (feedbackatInJesusdotcom)  . I tried the page. It wasn’t that hard to register. (When asked for my checkbook information, I clicked “cancel” since I just wanted to browse and I had no problem just viewing the information without giving my checking account number.) Just for fun, see the Brigada page at http://www.brigada.injesus.com.

FAMILYNET MISSION CONFERENCES STILL GOING STRONG

WebWatch a few years ago there was the snet.misc group of mission conferences, gated to the FamilyNet BBS network. They disappeared for a while as mail and news, but the BBS conference continued, and is now also available as mail, news and on the web. It has been joined by several other mission- related conferences. For details see http://www.geocities.com/missionalia/lists.htm or log in directly from your browser at http://www.family-bbs.net – and if some of the sub- groups need reviving, let’s talk about it! GET QUICK ACCESS TO MISSIONS ARTICLES ONLINE

WebWatch I really like http://www.missionreview.com for getting quick access to articles on specific people groups or topics. Just set your filter then click on “search” and you’ll likely find at least one archived article relating to your quest. Tip: the “search” button might be located off to the right of your screen. Just click on the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of your browser to bring it into view. Great resource.

WHAT’S UP WITH THIS HALLOWEEN STUFF?

Brigada autoresponder So . . . is this Halloween thing strictly a USA tradition . . . or do other countries have to deal with this mess as well? Thankfully, Ken Wes has put together one of his famous resource files for us, which you can now grab — if you’re interested — by sending an email to halloweenatbrigadadotorg  (halloweenatbrigadadotorg)  . In this file, he’s listed all kinds of addresses and links for Halloween ideas, including how to learn more, how to make great hand-outs, where to order tracts, and more. I know this one is just a tad far afield from the typical Brigada Today fare, but hey . . . ’tis the season. :-)

FOR THOSE IN USA: FREE 2-MIN. LONG DISTANCE

telephone If you live in the USA, forget searching for a quarter at payphones, as long as you can condense your phone message to 2 minutes or less. Just call 800-555- TELL then say “phone booth.” In exchange for listening to a 7-second ad, you get a free phone call to any location in the USA. This service should also work for those using Net2Phone or Dialpad, since you can now use TellMe as well. It works great for letting a spouse know you arrived with no problem, or clueing someone in on your contact phone number once you’ve arrived at your destination. No more excuses. :-)

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. THE ENVELOPE PLEASE! (BRIGADA SURVEY WINNERS ANNUONCED)

Brigada Logo These past 24 hours have been pretty exciting for 7 lucky winners, notified personally and directly by email, of course: Tex, Tom, Kevin, Philip, Irvin, SK, and JCMI. (How else would Brigada contact a winner? :-) ) These winners were the folks picked by a blind draw out of the pool of respondents to the reader survey we did a while back. (See — sometimes dreams do come true! :-) ) Results are still being tabulated, but in the meantime, 6 of the 7 winners will each receive a PUR Sport Water filter bottle, provided through the kindness of Mike & Deb at TealBrook http://www.tealbrook.com. In my opinion, these water bottles are the best for short-term travel overseas. The filtration action happens as you suck the water through a special drinking spout, so you’ll never have to pump water through a cylinder again. No dripping rubber hoses either. If you run out of water while out and about, just sneak up to any old fountain or faucet in the bazaar or city square and fill the bottle full, resting in full assurance that when you suck the water through the straw, you’ll be drinking safe water filtered with the same level of purity that you’d get from a Swiss Katadyn ceramic pump filter. The only loss is . . . you won’t get the isometric body- building practice any more. ‘Course, as for me, I always felt a bit self-conscious pumping that liter of water in front of the six-year-old at the house where I might be staying that particular week. :-) Anyway, if you’d like to try a PUR Sport filter for yourself — and lose the body-builder thing :-) — you can email Mike & Deb at infoattealbrookdotcom  (infoattealbrookdotcom)  . Cost is only $30 each; ask for an $8 holster if you want to make it totally handy! And while you’re at it, please pass along our thanks for their kind gesture (totally unsolicited!) of donating six of these filters for the Brigada readership survey! A seventh winner will receive a piece of original Archie Comic Strip artwork, courtesy Nate Butler ROX35Mediaataoldotcom  (ROX35Mediaataoldotcom)  . Nate worked on the original Archie staff years ago and this piece of history is nearly impossible to replicate! It’s been years since Archie shut down — so this is probably a collector’s item. So if you ever need illustrating or would like to learn more about illustrations for discipleship materials, Nate’s your man. He works with ROX35 Media, Inc., http://www.rox35.org a non-profit, non-denominational ministry which has been organized to provide international training and consultation in the production and use of Christian comics for evangelism and discipleship. Thanks Nate and thanks again Tealbrook!

PEOPLETEAMS NOW CONNECTING HUNDREDS OF MISSIONS SITES/PEOPLE

People Teams It’s been nearly a year since we mentioned PeopleTeams.org and their staff of 40 continues to move forward at http://www.peopleteams.org. Believe it or not, they’ve now got nearly 300 different unreached people networks going there! Boy am I glad they’re on the Lord’s side! :-) It’s an ad-free environment in which to host your unreached people group network, or at least point people to it. Just click on “Request a Free Website.” (By the way, somebody should ask them to add the Brigada website to their resource links listing. :-) Thanks for reminding us to mention this service again, Scott!) Stay tuned for more info. on PeopleTeams in coming weeks. There are some special plans in the works so keep reading!

WE GET MAIL (RE: “ARE YOU LOOKING FOR BRIGADA SUB-GROUPS?”)

lighting the way We heard from several readers regarding last week’s item “ARE YOU LOOKING FOR BRIGADA SUB-GROUPS?” Just to clarify — we weren’t intending to criticize MAFxc for instituting the policy whereby they would charge per message for email conferencing. We were only trying to speak objectively about some of the factors that influenced the demise of Brigada sub-conferences, since several readers were looking for them. Our point was that once MAFxc suggested they would begin charging by the word or by the message, groups began searching for other cost- effective locations like egroups.com . Nowadays, peopleteams.org is an even better solution! Once they get email conferencing software up and running at that site, it’ll be perfect. MAFxc, for its part, was only trying to operate in such a way that they could stay afloat financially. We’re very thankful for the start that CrossConnect (later MAFxc) gave to the missions email conferencing world — and for the birthing they gave to Brigada! One additional note about that item: If the comment about the putting “com” on the end instead of “org” was offensive, we apologize. (Referring to this somewhat well-known trick used by pornographers on the web, we jokingly said it would send you to a pornographic site. We didn’t intend to make light of the issue that pornography and prostitution are real problems — and you’re probably right — they indeed have no place in a missions journal like Brigada Today. Please forgive if the failed attempt at [probably late-night- written] humor bothered you!)

SECURE SERVER READY AT STRATEGIC NETWORK DOT ORG

WebWatch Wow! blinking1eyes Those folks at strategicnetwork.org even read Brigada Today. After including an item about them in last week’s issue, they wrote almost immediately to report that their secure server was back online. I probably misunderstood its purpose though. It’s mainly for login. I was thinking they had designed a site whereby private webgroups could have ongoing roundtable discussions in a secure environment. Either way, learn more at http://www.strategicnetwork.org.

A BRIGADA BOOTH AT URBANA?

Brigada Logo Mark asked that question this past week. It’s unlikely, since we don’t have an advertising budget to pay for the exhibit fees and travel costs. As you know, Brigada Today is free — we don’t even sell ads! (Our only tool for getting the word out is referrals from readers like you.) But you can learn more about Urbana at http://www.urbana.org. ARE YOU LOOKING FOR BRIGADA SUB-GROUPS?

Brigada Logo Good luck. :-) Truth is, many did not make the jump when MAFxc began its policy of charging “by the byte” or “by the message”, probably because many (like this one) were staffed by volunteers, rather than those getting paid “by the message” (like this one :-) ). Some groups continue under different banners… while others have totally vanished. :-( That’s a shame. In the hayday of “brigada-connections”, I think the Brigada sub-groups had real potential. But also, remember that 1995 was the height of the hayday of AD2000 & Beyond and all the momentum of raising up groups to reach them. Nowadays, it appears to me that some of that momentum is waning… and that’s too bad. But if any one entity is following in that tradition originally envisioned by those Brigada-subgroups, it’s: http://www.strategicnetwork.org (Make sure you put the “org” on the end and not “com”. If you put “com” then you’re directed to a ring of prostitutes. Okay. I’m joking.) :-) [more in the item below]
--------------------------------------

STRATEGIC NETWORK DOT ORG

WebWatch Anyway… we’ve mentioned the strategicnetwork site before but have you checked it out lately? There are all kinds of possibilities there. The only hitch is that it requires that you be live on the web for nearly everything you do. The old Brigada-connections idea was great for those around the world who are primarily emailers rather than browsers — and there are still plenty of them left. But clearly, momentum is shifting there too. More and more people are getting used to clicking and browsing. Still — if you ask me (and several have) — email is still the most common glue for Internet users. So … it’s a shame to have seen the rise and fall of brigada-connections. But check out strategicnetworks if you have web access (and you use it :-) ). It’s really well-designed. You can find people group networks by region, by country, by people group, or by forum. If none exists for your people of choice, you can volunteer to become one. There are pages to post resources (kind of like the eGroups feature that few use here in Brigada) and there are a ton of special interest cross-section groups like “bookstore”, “directory”, “chronology”, “evangelistic resources”, “opportunities”, “short-term trips” (free advertising, missions agencies!), and tons more. The folks running this site are to be congratulated big-time. If anyone can help you get connected, it’s Strategic Network .com. Hats off to its organizers! (Slight glitch with the site — for now, it appears the secure log-on, though promoted, doesn’t work. Too bad. That would be a great feature. The worst part is that it offers it but doesn’t tell you that it didn’t work… so unaware users might not notice that they don’t get the little “padlock” that they should for a secure site.)

MISSIONS CONFERENCE FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

calendar GO (Global Outreach) 2000, a missions conference targeting college students, will be held this year from November 3-5 in Madison, Georgia (one hour east of Atlanta). The weekend also includes interaction times with mission agencies, an international fair, panel discussions, a concert of prayer, personal reflection times, and worship by Silars Bald. The cost is $60 each for groups of ten or more and $65 each for individuals. For more info, write infoatglobalambitiondotorg  (infoatglobalambitiondotorg)  , or find them on the web at: http://www.globalambition.org.

RE-DO ON “MISSIONS RESOURCES”

lighting the way Aren’t you glad that, unlike some situations in life, Brigada Today can offer a “re-do”? :-) If you’ve had trouble with the link mentioned in last week’s Brigada Today, “MISSIONS RESOURCES INFORMATION“, where you can find “over 150 sources for Bibles, Books, Tracts and Videos,” try this one. The original link had a spurious space: http://www.esbc.com/missionsresources.html

LATEST BRIGADA-OPC CHALLENGE: 5-YEAR-OLD KELSEY BROOKE

OPC logo By the way, if you get an email about a missing 5-year-old named Kelsey Brooke, “just say delete.” She was found about 2 hours after the original email was sent… in October 1999!!! The original email sent by frantic searchers is still circulating! This kind of thing would be drastically reduced if more people followed the Brigada “OPC Protocol”. graduation cap Do you plan to interface with the Chinese world – whether here or there or anywhere? If so, consider the new intensive courses designed to help you acquire the language you need to minister in an effective and culturally appropriate manner. Instruction covers the language, culture, and history. The goal is competence. This means fluency and accuracy in the language, sensitivity and servanthood in the culture, and personal responsibility and perseverance in the learning process. Native-speaker professionals trained in modern methodology provide the language instruction. not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list.

Thank you.
