20010624 Brigada Today

In this issue….

--------------------------------------

FINALLY CAUGHT UP

Brigada Logo Can you believe it… finally caught up to date on Brigada Today! It’s about time! Lately, it’s been “Brigada last week“! Please forgive the “batch processing” for these last few editions. We’ll try to avoid it … but, among other things, I’ve been overseas leading a prayer journey with my family and . . . well . . . a guy can only do so much, right? I’ll try harder.
--------------------------------------

A WEALTH OF LEAST REACHED PEOPLES DATA

The first phase of the Joshua Project II website is open for business. The Joshua Project II team is a group of four former AD2000 and Beyond staff who are committed to “highlighting the least reached peoples of the world through information sharing and networking.” Following are some items currently accessible at: http://www.joshuaproject.net.
--------------------------------------

READ GENERAL LEAST REACHED PEOPLES INFORMATION

Read an overview of the Joshua Project II initiative. Read an article explaining why there are various total people group counts. Compare the various peoples lists and see a timeline of their development. Register your least reached peoples ministry activity / commitment.
--------------------------------------

SEE THE ORIGINAL JOSHUA PROJECT LIST

View the current status of the original Joshua Project list. View or download various segments of the original Joshua Project data. View people profiles from the original Joshua Project list.
--------------------------------------

DIGEST THE NEW JOSHUA PROJECT II ALL PEOPLES LIST

Download a comprehensive list of all 16,300 peoples by country. View people group lists for every country of the world. Participate in the Joshua Project II global survey. Discover interesting facts about people groups. For example, which relatively small country has over 900 people groups and which major country has only 7 people groups? Download the complete Joshua Project II Peoples information set.
--------------------------------------

THE NEXT PHASE OF THE JOSHUA PROJECT II WEBSITE

In the near future, the JP II team will work hard at…

  1. Making the data in the downloadable files available interactively on- line. This will allow, for example, a country can be selected and all the peoples in that country will be displayed. Then selecting a people, a people profile will be displayed including non-sensitive work-among information.

  2. An on-line more automated survey mechanism.

  3. A location to log your mission activity by linking your mission organization / church / denomination with a particular people group. This will be a web-based database, eventually with pre-made and user- defined queries allowing datasets such as the top 25 least reached groups, the 20 peoples most needing adoption, the largest groups without the Scriptures.

Thanks loads to Dan and the others at JP II. This could end up making a very significant contribution to the Cause. (Thanks, too, for those helping them make a go at this… like Caleb Project!!! Yahooo!) yahoo

RELIGION-IN-THE-AMERICAS (RITA) WEBSITE LAUNCHED

WebWatch IDEA Ministries of Santa Cruz, CA, has created a new website with information about all religious groups (Christian and non-Christian) known to exist in the Americas (48 countries) plus Spain and Portugal (a total of 50 countries). The website has a search-engine that allows the user to search by country, religious tradition (for example, Buddhist or Baptist), denominational name and a classification code on a variety of databases. For a preview, see: www.prolades.com. Way to go Clifton Holland and IDEA!

COMPILING A LIST OF ALL FEEDING PROGRAMS

Emmaus Road International is looking for a list of feeding programs in needy areas. From “soup kitchens” to orphanages. Statistics say that hundreds of thousands die each year from lack of nutrition. ERI would like to learn what we ARE doing. Please submit to their e-mail address Emmaus_Roadateridotorg  (Emmaus_Roadateridotorg)   a contact address with basic details: country, type of feeding program, ages included, need for expansion. Example: (contact e-mail address), Ukraine, weekly soup kitchen, all ages, expand to daily. ERI will send us a full report in a couple of weeks… so have at it!

NEW RESOURCE FOR REACHING MUSLIMS

Cross’ book for unbelievers “The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus” (which has been used of God to help thousands to understand and believe the Gospel). According to reviewers, “It strings together key stories of Scripture to present the message of the prophets – clearly, chronologically and compellingly – as it gently helps Muslims over their most common stumbling blocks.” It is scheduled to come out in Arabic, French, Albanian, and Turkish. Check it out at http://www.goodseed.com/books.html GoodSeed International’s web-price: $11.96. Two-case price: $7.50 per book. CALLING CHURCH WEBMASTERS

WebWatch ‘Churchsite Chat’ is a new two-way email discussion list for all church webmasters and site administrators. It offers the chance to dialogue about any issue relating to constructing or maintaining a church website, with a particular emphasis on effective communication and how to use church pages to reach non- Christians. Also very welcome are those considering or planning a church site, and site administrators who use church template-site providers. To subscribe, send a blank email to churchsite-chat-subscribeatweb-evangelismdotcom  (churchsite-chat-subscribeatweb-evangelismdotcom)  .

WHERE DOES ONE LEARN SPANISH ONLINE?

Jed jedsnyderatrcndotcom  (jedsnyderatrcndotcom)   is trying to find a way to learn Spanish over the internet — relatively quickly. Of course, the ideal is learning on-site, but that having been said, let’s help the guy at least get a head start. In fact, maybe it’s time we did an autoresponder on all tools for learning other languages. We could toss in tape sets from Berlitz, Sybervision (or Intelliquest — they’re available toll-free in the USA or via Net2phone at 800-275-6940), as well as CD resources like Rosetta Stone and others. Would you send all your best sites and sources to Jed and he’ll compile the list for us and we’ll post it here in an autoresponder in a couple of weeks. Thanks Jed!

STUPENDOUS UPDATE FROM OPERATION WORLD EDITOR

We received this note last Thursday from Patrick Johnstone, lead author of Operation World.

“Doug,
“A little message to say that God has been gracious to us and enabled us to complete the text of Operation World (OW) just in time to send off the CD by the deadline with its complex PDF files ready for printing. This we aim to send by DHL or equivalent tomorrow, 30th June.

“The final book with indices on peoples and places is about 824 pages long. The greater length is due to better lay-out, inclusion of new material on top of what has been an almost complete re-write (probably about 80%). New features include answers to prayer for many countries and the index. The book itself will be almost exactly the same size as the last, but with thinner paper.

“Thank you and all Brigada readers for prayer on our behalf. Wonderfully we have had 9 months of only minor computer problems in spite of having no resident computer manager on site and we have been in reasonable health as a team even though we have worked overtime on this for many months.

“I believe this is the best OW yet. It is certainly the best-checked with input from thousands of people. What a wonderful global team we have had! We trust that there are no harmful comments, silly bloobs or serious omissions.

“We are now finalizing the CD version with it ancillary components. Our colleagues of GMI are working hard on this production now. This will, for the first time, give all CD owners access in a more user-friendly way our whole database with sources.

“The new book and CD as well as the completely re-vamped children’s’ version (formerly YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD) and now called WINDOW ON THE WORLD (this looks brilliant!) will be launched in the UK on 6 Sept on the MV Logos II in London and a few days later in the USA at the Florida Jamboree of the EFMA/IFMA/ACMC.

“In Jesus and for world evangelization,

“Patrick and Robyn Johnstone”

[snip snip… end of note from Patrick Johnstone]

Yahooooooooo! This is a great piece of news

KINGDOM CONNECTIONS

calendar Interested in finding ways to better connect to the global partnership movement? Here is an opportunity to get involved. Interdev is offering a partnership education seminar designed for church and organizational leaders interested in a better understanding of the principles driving evangelism/church planting partnerships. “Kingdom Connections” will be held in Seattle, October 10-12, 2001, and is being sponsored by Interdev with Evangelical Fellowship of Mission Agencies (EFMA), the Interdenominational Fellowship of Mission Agencies (IFMA), Advancing Churches in Missions Commitment (ACMC) and World Evangelical Fellowship (WEF). For brochure and full registration information, please contact Interdev-USatxcdotorg  (Interdev-USatxcdotorg)  . There is a limit to the number of people allowed in these courses so early application and registration is crucial.

NONPROFIT PUBLISHER FOR CHURCHES AND MISSIONS

books Master Design Ministries is a unique book publisher. They only publish books for churches and missions/missionaries and, because of their missionary staff, at a fraction of the cost of most self-publishers. So if you have a book in any language (from Bibles to primers to biographies to devotionals to Bible studies) that you want to publish, take a look at their services and pricing. You can find them on the web at http://www.masterdesign.org or contact them via email at infoatmasterdesigndotorg  (infoatmasterdesigndotorg)  .

ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE FOR FREE

virus Thanks to Paul for the great tip regarding AVG by Grisoft. He wrote, “I’ve been using it for a couple of years… it’s completely free, even the monthly updates. It catches one or two viruses every month in my emails now. Some even from computers that supposedly were protected by other virus software such as McAffee :-( It’s very user friendly — don’t know how they can give it away for free (there is a commercial version that they charge for, though).” I guess that’s one of the secrets of the Brigada family. We throw out an idea and someone (among the nearly 10,000 of us) has an even better option! … and at an even more attractive price! :-) Check out Paul’s option at http://www.grisoft.com

CONFERENCE FOR JAPANESE & THOSE WORKING WITH JAPANESE

calendar For Japanese Christians and those ministering to them, the Equipper Conference 2001 will endeavor to teach Japanese Christians through fellowship and messages in Japanese from God’s Word to ‘Look Unto Jesus’ thus encouraging one another’s spiritual growth and faith. This conference is also dedicated to help equip those ministering among Japanese to better understand the critical issues in preparing Japanese Christians to take root and bear fruit back home. The dates are 12/27/01-1/1/02 at Forest Home Christian Conference Center, Forest Falls, CA. The conference is sponsored by International Students Incorporated, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Japanese Christian Fellowship Network, and Navigators. ANTICIPATING CHURCH PLANTING? GOT A WEEK?

graduation cap Too many church planters take the latest church-planting model, transplant it to other parts of the world, then wonder why things didn’t go well. Developing an effective model for the particular context means greater effectiveness. This one week course, taught at the Center for Intercultural Training by Dr. Tom Steffen of Biola University, is a survey and analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of various church-planting models and strategies used around the world. It identifies key factors that the church planter can implement in a context specific, phase-out oriented church-planting strategy. Course dates are July 30-August 3, 2001. Interested? Write citinfoatcompuservedotcom  (citinfoatcompuservedotcom)   or call (toll-free in the USA or via Net2Phone) 800-887-1786 or visit http://www.citi.org.

INTERNATIONAL PHOTOS… 50,000 OF ‘EM!

camera If you prepare visuals (Powerpoint presentations, printed literature, etc.), check out: www.corbis.com. For non-profit use, they’re about $3 each… which isn’t bad at all for professional quality pictures — if they’re the exact ones for which you’ve been searching! (Thanks for the tip, Tony! TO TRAIN SHORT TERM MISSION TEAMS…

As a youth pastor, mission team leader, or missionary who is hosting a summer mission team, you have a great desire to have spiritually prepared people on the mission team. In this new resource, “Before You Pack Your Bag, Prepare Your Heart”, you will find a user-friendly, concise, spiral-bound study guide for team members to do at home in private before the trip. The team member grapples with 12 Bible studies aimed at cultural sensitivity issues, spiritual formation, and team relationships. The author has trained 100’s of teams for 9 years using this material. Team leaders who feel the preparation crunch will be helped by the page of practical ideas on how to use the book effectively in mission trip orientation sessions as well. For more ideas email Cindy at Judge190ataoldotcom  (Judge190ataoldotcom)  . Purchase 25-50 copies at $6.95 or over 51 copies at $5.95 each. Fax orders for books at quantity discounts to 630-682-0926 or click to: http://www.campfireresources.com/wv_bk1_prepare.html.

KEEP YOUR VIRUS DEFINITIONS UP TO DATE

virus Been putting off installing that antivirus software? Better not procrastinate any longer. The frequency of these dastardly programs just keeps stepping up… and the strength and risk are greater than ever. Norton is typically in the winner’s circle for “editor’s choice”, but anything is better than nothing at all. Better act now… or your PC will be toast.

WEBWATCH: A SITE FOR THE HAKKA CHINESE

WebWatch Hakka Church Planting Ministries has just launched a new web site that they hope will build a bridge between the worldwide body of Christ and the unreached Hakka Chinese of Taiwan. In an effort to raise awareness, rally prayer support, and release workers, this rather extensive site invites viewers to learn about who the Hakkas are, why they are so hard to reach, and how the on-site missionary team is striving to pioneer a church planting movement in their midst. The site also offers an abundance of yours-for-the-taking small group resources such as Bible Discussions, Icebreakers, and Leadership Tips. What’s more, it’s nicely done, serving as a great sample of what all mission teams could do on the web, if they only had the funding and/or the volunteers to make it happen. Check them out at: www.hakkaministries.org (Way to go John! Keep up the good work!)

USA READERS: IF YOU’RE ON THE HUNT FOR A POSTAGE METER

mailbox If you’re a USA reader and you’ve been nagged by those trips (and lines!) to the post office and back, “Simply Postage” by Neopost might be just the solution you need. For more information, click to: http://www.simplypostage.com and read all about it. There’s even a great comparison chart there so you can see all the competitive plans too. You’ll notice that “Simply Postage” is the best solution because

  1. you aren’t charged a service fee each time you refill postage,
  2. you can refill anytime you want via the Internet,
  3. you pay only for the exact postage you download (plus a $15/mo. subscription fee), and
  4. you can even print postage while offline.

I’ve been using one of these machines now for about six months. I can tell you that it has been one of the handiest gadgets I’ve ever purchased. At the end of the month, when I need stamps for my regular monthly report, I print them 10 at a time until I have enough for the whole mailing. (The machine will “background print”.) At other times, if I just need one stamp, I just click for the one stamp I need. If the $15/month is worth it to you to escape regular trips to the lines at the post office, it’s a no-brainer! To get connected, just call toll-free to 877-499-3739. (Note — this month they have a special offer going on. If you tell them that Doug Lucas sent you (3700 Hopewell Rd., Louisville, KY 40299; DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg, 502-297-0006), you get $25 of free postage and my mission postage account will be credited with $20 of free postage too. Not a bad deal — again… if you don’t mind the $15/month user fee. If you need a meter, give it a try! The scales are built right in so you can weigh, print, and post — then forget about it!

DISTANCE (CHRISTIAN) EDUCATION IN FRENCH

Thanks to Phil for following up on his quest to find Christian Education resources on the Net. The one find he discovered was “Universiti Biblique Virtuelle”, available via email at InfoDEQatSympaticodotCa  (InfoDEQatSympaticodotCa)   or on the web at: http://www.deq.ca That’s not a great quantity, but it looks like great quality!

KIDS IMPACTING THE WORLD

Do you know of outstanding kids reaching the world for Jesus whose stories could inspire other kids? They could be reaching out through agencies, denominations, on their own, with their families or through a local church or school group. Sandy wants to hear from you! E-mail her at koop1smatyahoodotcom  (koop1smatyahoodotcom)   and tell her what you know. In a couple of weeks, she’ll compile a report for all of us.

THE BACKPAGE: MORE SILENT SPRING FEEDBACK

Doug's backpage I was impressed (in fact, amazed ) at all the feedback on the “Silent Spring” item. (It has continued to flow in, though more slowly.) It’s clear that many Brigada participants have a very strong view on the current status of mobilization. Some felt that the pendulum has now swung in the direction of non-Western evangelicals, therefore resulting in less “noise” and more action. Others felt that the momentum now favored congregations, whereas before it was focused on well-known individuals (such as special speakers and itinerant evangelists) or agencies. Whatever the case, one thing is clear: there’s a huge percentage of readers out there who feel that global evangelization is by no means finished. What’s more, there’s still a ton of interest in completing it . . . regardless of how long it takes. Bravo to that intent… and that determination!

(As to the YahooGroups polling feature, what a bust that was! We learned the hard way that many Brigada participants don’t ever log into the YahooGroups site and therefore, they have no web-id or password for online access. And that’s fine. Just don’t count on another YahooGroups poll showing up here anytime soon! :-) What a hassle it was for people to try to figure it out and use it. Our apologies to all those who were perplexed!)

Thanks to for hosting the Brigada mailing list.
Emphasis is placed on items relating to unreached peoples and challenges faced by those reaching them cross-culturally.

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us! See the note above if you’d like to submit items for Brigada Today. Thanks for understanding. Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.
