ANNOUNCING: THE 2001 OPERATION WORLD CD-ROM!

cd-rom You’ve heard about the new edition of Patrick Johnstone’s incredible Operation World… well, the CD-ROM version created by GMI gives you an incredible view of the data… electronically! It contains the full (English language) text, as well as all maps, charts, and tables from the book; the huge Operation World research database (the same database Patrick and Jason used to create Operation World); the latest country profile information from the World Factbook; and related Web links for every country. The CD is designed as a sophisticated Web site, and runs on both Windows and Mac. It is available at the incredibly low price of $17.99 (plus shipping and tax) from GMI. More information is available on the Web at http://www.gmi.org/products/owcd.htm or contact Lorri infoatgmidotorg  (infoatgmidotorg)   or by telephone: 719-531-3599 ext. 599 or by fax: 719-548-7459.
--------------------------------------

THIS IS MORE THAN “YOUR FATHER’S OPERATION WORLD”!

I remember the very first Operation World I saw… way back in 1981 or so, I believe, and wow was I bowled over by the research and the care that Patrick Johnstone had invested in the data. Well guess what — that hasn’t changed a bit. Sure… maybe there’s more raw data in one of the big encyclopedic works on missions… but then… this one doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, either. And what’s more, I actually think there’s more practical material here than there is in the big books anyway.
--------------------------------------

CARRY OPERATION WORLD WITHOUT THE PAPER

Now you don’t have to carry around the big Operation World book any more! Just leave the CD in your laptop and go! Until now, my “default” CD (the one I leave in my laptop most of the time) has been Microsoft Encarta Reference Library 2002. Not so anymore. Now the Encarta CD will travel in the CD carrier pouch in my briefcase. The CD slot in my laptop will now carry Op. World. Hands down.
--------------------------------------

HOW PRAY-ERS CAN USE OPERATION WORLD ON CD-ROM

Suppose you’re a dedicated pray-er. When you get up each morning, just hit “Start|Programs|Operation World 2001”. When the CD opens, it’ll already be focused on the prayer request data for the particular day you open it! Click on the Summary to get the big picture, or get close-ups of the Geography, Peoples, Economy, Politics, Religion, and Challenges for Prayer. We’re all familiar with the Op. World prayer approach… one country per day… but this CD makes it so much more useful — and lightweight! :-)
--------------------------------------

IF YOU LIKE STATISTICS

You’re in luck. It’s loaded! As mentioned above, you get the same database files that Patrick and company used to make the book! I mean… it’s like having the international census information at your fingertips. Plus, I think they must have enclosed the entire CIA Factbook for each country too. So on your next trip to Michigan, take along a friend to drive . . . and you read CIA reference material for Portugal — or whatever.
--------------------------------------

HOW MISSION MOBILIZERS CAN USE IT

It gets even more interesting if you’re a missions mobilizer. Get this — Patrick and the GMI folks have given you permission in advance to utilize these resources in your newsletter or website (within reason; you can’t charge more than actual cost of production… and it’s a limited use policy; read the details on the CD). Can you imagine? They’ve thrown the whole “let’s make as much money as we can” thing out the window and shared their years of labor with the world! I love it! So you’ve got maps and charts, big and small — plus links to the Operation World website!
--------------------------------------

IT’S A THING THAT GROWS AND GROWS AND GROWS!

Now the really interesting part. When GMI wrote the interface with the CD, they integrated the CD with the web site in an incredibly close fashion. (In fact, sometimes I forget which one I’m viewing!) And users can add links to the website interactively!!! (They point the user to the website in tons of places.) The authors also point the user to tons of other external sites too, including the site for the particular mission organization that is being described at the time. And using the web form, it’s really easy to send in errata.
--------------------------------------

WHAT ABOUT SECURITY?

They’ve covered it. Rather than feature specifics, when talking about sensitive places, they use general principles and general examples rather than specific ones with known names or streets. And yet… every mission agency in the world must be listed in the directory.
--------------------------------------

WHAT IF YOU WANT THE REAL PRINTED VERSION?

book No problem. You can even order it on the webpage for Operation World!!! Or get it at your local Christian bookstore. Otherwise, pick up a copy for $17.99 (672 pages, ISBN 1850783578) by calling (in the USA or via Net2Phone) 800-328-6109 or emailing csatbethanyhousedotcom  (csatbethanyhousedotcom)  . A Day of Terror for the USA and its visitors

note Note: Though this Brigada Today represents the 8/24 edition, it is being compiled on Sept. 11th. I know, I know. It’s weird… but a long time ago we settled on doing editions on Fridays… and we’re told that if we keep the dates consistent it just works better that way. So… this the Aug. 24th edition… posted Sept. 11th.

In addition to his role of making an effort to compile Brigada Today on an [attempted] regular basis, Doug Lucas serves as President of a missions agency called Team Expansion. On Monday, Sept. 10, Doug wrote a personal note to each of the 175 full-time Team Expansion workers around the world, asking each of them to take a greater measure of caution — to “watch your back”, so to speak. After watching the morning of Sept. 11th, Doug wrote his colleagues again, this time, with the following message:

“Sept. 11, 2001 — A Day of Terror for the USA and its visitors

“Well obviously, when I sent out a warning message to you yesterday, I had no inkling that 24 hours later, we’d be viewing scenes of such horrible destruction and loss of life. Honestly, at that time, I was anticipating some kind of attack on an embassy in Tokyo . . . or something in a restaurant in South Korea. By no means would those kinds of acts have been “small-scale”, but the massive loss of life and the incredible sense of emotion that New Yorkers . . . and all Americans – – in fact, all sensible world citizens — . . . the stuff we feel at a time like this is probably something akin to what our parents or grandparents felt on the day after Pearl Harbor.

“Of course, when I thought about attacks being far away, I was actually thinking of you and all our missionary force. Often, what’s far away from us in proximity is close to you. In this case, the warning ended up with an ironic twist — the attack was much closer to home than I ever imagined. Was it Usama Bin Ladin? Or was it some Tim McVeigh with a twisted sense of “getting even” about something that happened to his mother or brother? The truth is, we might never find out for sure. But one thing is certain: regardless of where this kind of act takes place, we are reminded of just how fragile life can be. I mean, how do we prevent jetliners from crashing through the windows of skyscrapers… or, for that matter, smashing into the castle at Disneyworld? Yikes.

“The only thing we can really trust in is the fact that somehow, God is near to us in times like these. He empowers us to do His will… to carry out the good works that He’s created in advance for us to do. Sometimes that will require more courage, more endurance, and more stamina than we personally can muster.

“So where do we turn in times like these? (You know where I’m going with this.) We have to look straight into God’s face and seek Him. Here at Int’l Services, we just gathered for a quiet time of prayer. As each team member lifted up various aspects of this tragedy, I saw varying perspectives and took peace in giving over all the strain to God.

“So I’m asking… would you please join me today as we lift up the needs of all the families who have lost loved ones this morning? Would you help me lift up the families of those who aren’t even Americans but were simply in line to visit the World Trade Center as tourists? Let’s pray for peace for those who are, at this very moment, agonizing over a terrible injury or loss of limb… or loss of a Mom or Dad or son or daughter. We pray for wisdom for our leaders . . . for George Bush and all his advisors. … that he might have insight from God and incredibly swift and effective judgment. May God bless America and her allies on this fateful day.

“Would you and your colleagues there be able to gather today, even for a few moments, to jointly pray these prayers with us? Would you intentionally ask the Lord to grant wisdom to the USA’s leaders? Thank you.

“Now, the same message I sent you 24 hours ago… still applies… “Over these next few weeks, as you make travel plans, just remember, especially for those traveling between an overseas location and the USA… please maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to increase your security awareness and reduce your vulnerability, whenever it is possible. Maintain a low profile, vary routes and times for all required travel, and treat mail and packages from unfamiliar sources with suspicion. In addition, Avoid contact with any suspicious, unfamiliar objects, and report the presence of any such objects to local authorities. Vehicles should not be left unattended, if at all possible, and should be kept locked at all times. We appreciate you . . . and your friendship and camaraderie… so we felt an ounce of caution would be worth a pound of cure.’

“So please… just be careful. It truly is a jungle out there. :-)

Doug Lucas

MARY POPPINS, WHERE ARE YOU?

Are you (or do you know) a mature, Christian woman who would like to volunteer to be a “nanny” for a stressed out and overly busy mission family? Many such families need some help with their kids and other domestic chores. Anywhere from six weeks to a year or even more would be a great blessing. A ministry named “Mission Nannys” has appeared to help fill that need. Mission Nannys matches requests from missionaries for domestic help and nannies with those women who would like to help. More at http://MissionNannys.org, or email Betty at bettyatmissionnannysdotorg  (bettyatmissionnannysdotorg)  .

Membership is free, apparently, though you’ll sure be tempted to buy all the special items for sale with your pictures pasted on them! (Mugs, shirts, etc.) This would be a great way for on-field workers to share photos with folks back home . . . yet they wouldn’t have to put together a whole website. Check it out!
