MISSIONARY CRISIS MANAGEMENT MATERIALS

This is a horrific, but appropriate time to remind mission leaders and missionaries that if you don’t manage the crisis, it will manage you. But you don’t have to reinvent the wheel here. Many missionaries and missions have contributed to a fairly large amount of crisis management information that is available free for missionaries to use to develop their own crisis plans. Information is available that relates to kidnapping, car bombs, record keeping, evacuation, Rapid Kidnap, home security, a generic security manual and more. Contact Rich – rcwagneratcompuservedotcom  (rcwagneratcompuservedotcom)   or rcwagneratenlacedotnet  (rcwagneratenlacedotnet)  . He’ll verify that you are who you say you are, then send you some free crisis consulting materials. Now… I’ve told him he might get… literally… hundreds of requests… but hey… the guy has survived car bombs, kidnapping, and tons more. So what’s a flooded email inbox among friends! :-) He says he’ll do it for the Brigada family! Yahooo!Yahoo :-)

OXFORD MA IN COMMUNICATION PRACTICE

graduation cap The MA in Communication offered by the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies has recently been revalidated and OCMS are now accepting applications for the MA in Communication Practice. Printed copies of the course brochure are available on request from the course manager, Geoff Morgan gmorganatocmsdotacdotuk  (gmorganatocmsdotacdotuk)   The brochure may also be downloaded from the ICTI web site http://www.icmc.org/icti/ma.pdf or the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies website.

STRESS MANAGEMENT

book “Big Book” Stress Management is a new book by chr. author and counselor, Eva-Maria Woodruff. Originally written as a doctoral thesis, it is now available in book form. It seeks to warn “Family Members” about the deceptive and dangerous pseudo-scientific practices used in counseling, medicine (especially cancer treatment and pain management), business and education. It then offers sound “Big Book” alternatives compatible with true scientific findings. You may order it from any bookstore that has an account with Spring Arbor distributors or e-mail the author at evamwoodataoldotcom  (evamwoodataoldotcom)  . To open a new account with Spring Arbor (in case your area has no bookstore) you may call 800-937-0152. They require no minimum purchase.

OPERATION WORLD CD CORRECTION

lighting the way In the 2001/08/31 BRIGADA TODAY we said: “Patrick and the GMI folks have given you permission in advance to utilize these resources in your newsletter or website”. Those who followed our advice to “read the details on the CD” will have noticed that except for brief quotations, the permissions granted in advance are only for printed materials. Sorry about that!!!
--------------------------------------

IMPROVED OPERATION WORLD WEB LINKS

WebWatch Michael Jaffarian, who researched most of the web links for the Operation World Book and CD- ROM, has provided his full research database (including star ratings and abstracts not included in the book or CD-ROM) for inclusion on the Operation World web site. These expanded listings may be reached from: http://operationworld.org/updates/website.html

or using the “For updated links, see . . .” links at the bottom of the Internet Links pages on the OW CD-ROM. From any country web site update page, click “Web Sites” on the Table of Contents to see the World and subject-related sites.

--------------------------------------

OPERATION WORLD WANTS YOU!

WebWatch The new web site update pages have a form where you can suggest new web sites. Afghanistan, for example, has only one entry currently. Please add your favorite web sites for countries, regions, or topics of interest to you.
--------------------------------------

WANNA’ HELP WITH AN INTERNET SECURITY SURVEY?

Here’s the chance you’ve been dreaming about! :-) Mike, an “Aussie”, is doing a survey from “down under”, and he’d love to get your input. Here are the questions:

  • What is your role in missions?
  • How important for you is internet security in missions?
  • What security measures do you take in getting information to your counterparts around the world?
  • What ways do you protect the sending and receiving of information?
  • How do you handle emails with those in secure countries/regions?
  • What and/or is your biggest security threat?
  • In what ways has your security been breached in the past?
  • How did you deal with that breech?
  • How is publicity of your organization done using the Internet? i.e. in regard to websites or other.
  • Are you concerned with the names of domains and/or email addresses associated with your organization?
  • Any other comments you have about internet security and missions.

If we participate, he’ll report about the outcome of the survey here on Brigada! Just email your response to: mikeallatworldviewdotedudotau  (mikeallatworldviewdotedudotau)   To qualify, make sure you email the response within 7 days of receiving this Brigada Today! Thanks!

MUSIC TO REACH UNREACHED PEOPLE GROUPS

musical notes Would you like to help a group develop indigenous Christian songs? Consider taking a week-long course at CIT in N. Carolina (Oct. 29-Nov. 2, also end of April 2002). The focus is on empowering a community to make culturally-appropriate Christian music, and to use it effectively in evangelism, worship, and church planting. You do not need to be a musician to benefit from this course. Some attention will be given to music of each student’s geographical interest. See http://www.citi.org or write NeeleyPLatnetscapedotnet  (NeeleyPLatnetscapedotnet)   for information.
noteSorry the notice is short… but we’re hoping that if you can’t make the 10/29 class, maybe you can shoot for the April version!

“COUNTRY NETWORK” MISSION DOMAINS

For example “TheAfganistanNetwork.com” or “ThePakistanNetwork.com” For inquiries on country availability and price email jacksonatdoctordotcom  (jacksonatdoctordotcom)  .

THE FOLKS AT JOSHUA PROJECT II FORGE ON

Curious about what happened to all the AD2000 & Beyond unreached people data? Wonder no more. The legacy lives on . . . in the form of Joshua Project II. They continue to refine their already-completed comprehensive ethno-cultural list of all the world’s peoples. Check it out (viewing and download) at: http://www.joshuaproject.net/datacomplete.html Now, during the next few months, they want to attach various Church Planting progress indicators to that list e.g. % Evangelicals, % Adherents and several others such as Operation World Progress Indicators, status of various ministries tools of Bible Translation progress, Christian Radio Broadcasting, Audio Recordings and Jesus Film.

Then they’ll try to establish criteria to identify the least reached (possibly something like less than 2% Evangelical) and then publish a global comprehensive least reached list. Next they’ll tackle what might be the most important phase — to begin promoting the comprehensive least-reached peoples list and gathering ministry commitments for networking purposes. They’ll also expand the JPII website to be interactive to allow queries such as: “Show me the ten largest groups without a Jesus Film that are considered unreached? Show me all groups in the 10/40 Window that are below 5% Christian and have audio recordings available. Show me the 20 top most adoptable” peoples.”

Let’s all pray that God will bless their work. They are the “Nehemiahs” trudging through the city in the dark, hoping to gain for us a more accurate picture of the walls that most need rebuilding.

WHAT WILL WE DO WITHOUT INFOBEAT?

letter and ligntening bolt Email-based global news? Until recently, Infobeat provided an excellent email news service, but they recently changed their format and their range of content. Do you have any suggestions on a comprehensive, free (or inexpensive) email news service providing global coverage that does NOT require web access to read the articles? Send your comments to David davidgatcydotnet  (davidgatcydotnet)   including the URL to contact the news service. A summary report will be made available after a couple of weeks here on Brigada. (Thanks David!!! What a great idea. I feel your pain. My buddies and I went to CNN.com’s email news. It’s still no replacement for the old InfoBeat.)

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world and Spain is the European country with the fewest number of evangelical believers. Now, an evangelistic web page has been launched at http://www.lamparaes.com with the theme “Practical Wisdom” targeting the unchurched in Spain. “Lámpara Es” is the Spanish translation of the opening phrase of Psalm 119:105 – “Thy word is a LAMP unto my feet…” Gregg infoatlamparaesdotcom  (infoatlamparaesdotcom)   describes the site as “pre-evangelistic” and is part of the larger strategy of the Spanish organization “Evangelismo En Accion”, which has a 27-year history of church planting in Spain. Details, ordering information, and reviews from field tests are available at http://www.onewholeworld.com/resources.php or by emailing the author directly at aliciaatonewholeworlddotcom  (aliciaatonewholeworlddotcom)  . LET’S WATCH OUR METAPHORS

Last year at Fuller Seminary, a relatively small group of missions leaders helped us all to be more precise and, well, Christian in our communications. This is not “bleeding hearts” stuff to be ignored. Do these words look familiar: “target,” “conquer,” “army,” “crusade,” “mobilize,” “beachhead,” “advance,” “enemy,” and “battle?” Given the events of the past month and watching world leaders try and stumble, it seems timely to resurrect such reminders. Here are some of their conclusions:

  1. Metaphors are potent in shaping thought and compelling action. “Warfare” metaphors and terminology have been misused in Christian mission communications.
  2. People are responding to the call to glorify God among the nations, follow Christ into servanthood and sacrifice, and lift up the downtrodden to a life of great purpose and meaning. These are themes around which we need to develop metaphors to summon God’s people to God’s mission.
  3. The new dynamics of globalization and instant global electronic information technologies are rapidly changing the context of our communication. The world will read or hear whatever we say. The group closed by summarizing, “We desire to honor God and glorify Him as we engage in communicating His love to the peoples of the earth. Where reflection on our words has revealed less than Christlike attitudes or circumstances where we have unintentionally hurt others, we are eager to repent, apologize, and do better.”

We’ll try to follow their recommendations here — and suggest others do also.

A SPECIAL MOMENT FOR HINDUS?

An amazing turn of events is taking place in India. Anti-caste leaders, tired of living under the oppressive tenets of Hinduism, are persuading lower caste Hindus to renounce Hinduism. Ram Raj, one such leader, is encouraging oppressed Hindus to convert to a religion (such as Buddhism, Islam or Christianity) that will give them social, educational and vocational freedom. Raj is inviting millions of lower caste Hindus to a massive conversion rally that could trigger a religious sea-change in India, launching a tidal wave of Hindus out of Hinduism. But it’s not just for those working with Muslims. Muller’s material applies to most of the cultures in the 10/40 window, plus the cultures of many aboriginal people around the world. And what in the world does this have to do with missions? Well I’m not exactly sure, but surely someone can think up a way to use this kind of technology for a good global cause. :-) Check it out at http://www.kurzweilAI.net.

Joshua Project 2000 logo Want to participate in the follow-on work to Joshua Project 2000? Just click on over to http://www.joshuaproject.net/surveyintro.html. Joshua Project II welcomes survey participation by any ministry or organization working among one or more people groups. Users can download the survey cover letter and instructions and select from over 225 country survey forms in PDF format. This is still somewhat of a “paper-based” system as users must print off various reports, fill them in manually and return them to Joshua Project II via postal mail. JPII plans to upgrade this to a full on-line system where users can fill in survey forms directly on the web and submit batches of ministry activity updates electronically.
