1) GREAT BOOK OFFER TO SEE MISSION PROGRAM CASE STUDIES — The author of “Today’s All-Star Mission Churches”/Strategies To Help Your Church get Into the Game, would like to offer his book to all Brigada subscribers for $7.50 postage paid (sorry… USA only). Just mail a check payable to UWM to Tom Telford, PO Box 50400, Myrtle Beach, SC 29579. I just passed along a copy of this to our church mobilization group in Team Expansion and I’ll have to admit, it’s chocked *full* of ideas. There’s enough in there to keep your church (or your mobilization team) busy for months to come… and help you become more proactive all at the same time. (Those outside the USA might consider asking a friend in the US to order the book then relay it overseas.) Thanks much Tom!!!

______________________________________________________________________

2) LOVE THE NEW MARC PUBLICATION SITE — Have you visited:

http://www.marcpublications.com/

lately??? Whew! What a re-make. And they’re now shipping free to all USA addresses (reasonable rates to those outside the USA too). Plus you can get past MARC newsletters and search big-time through everything on their site. So if you need a book or publication about relief and development… or anything else in categories from “Anthropology” to “Women” (that’s *almost* A to Z :-) ) give it a try.

3) TESOL COURSE SCHEDULED IN LEBANON, PA. — If you’re quick on your heels and/or if you’re desperate for TESL training, it’s not too late to get in on TESOL at YWAM, Lebanon (Pennsylvania). They’re offering another TESOL course beginning November 26 and ending December 21, 2001. For information contact YWAM 717-274-90910 or e-mail <davidbbaumanatcsdotcom>. </davidbbaumanatcsdotcom>

______________________________________________________________________

4) GIVING CHILDREN A HEART FOR MISSIONS — Designed specifically to appeal to children, parents, and educators, the new book, “Window On The World”, is an in-depth look at countries, cultures and people-groups around the world. It’s got great pictures… and would work well as a devotional guide. Order at your nearest Christian bookstore or through Bethany House Publishers by calling 1-800-328-6109 or e-mailing <csatbethanyhousedotcom>. </csatbethanyhousedotcom>

5) FROM WALL STREET TO THE WORLD: A BOOK ABOUT PIONEERS — Ralph Winter has written, “The most powerful and significant story of mission is not that of one who becomes a missionary,” writes Ralph Winter, founder of the U. S. Center for World Mission, “but of someone who founds a new structure for mission that throws almost a thousand missionaries into the most needy corners of the earth. That is not common at all. We want reasons…” Now, Pioneers founder Ted Fletcher will give you reasons. His new book, When God Comes Calling, can be ordered by calling 407-382-6000 or by sending $7.95 plus shipping and handling to PIONEERS, 12343 Narcoossee Road, Orlando, FL 32827 USA. U.S. shipping is $2/book, but please contact PIONEERS at <infoatpioneersdotorg> for international shipping rates. </infoatpioneersdotorg>

6) LEARN ABOUT NOMADS — The third Nomads Consultation will be held January 7-11, 2002, in Pasadena, California, co-sponsored by Institute for Nomadic Ministry of the U.S. Center for World Missions, The International Journal for Frontier Mission, and Interdev. This event seeks to look at strategies, networking and a whole lot more. 7) PLIGHT OF AFGHAN WOMEN — With all the recent events in Afghanistan, there’s a lot of interest in how to help the *people* there. Here’s a tangible way to learn more. An NGO working with Afghan refugees recently produced a 12 minute video featuring the plight of Afghan women. Entitled, “Tears For Afghanistan”, this video was featured at the Global Conference for Women in Dallas recently, and is being made available to interested parties. If you would like to order a copy for your church or prayer group, or would like to make a gift of the video to someone you know who needs to get a better understanding of what women there are going through, you may email <afghanwomenataoldotcom> . The suggested donation for the video is $5.00 US, plus $2.00 US for postage in the US. It is available on VHS in NTSC and PAL. </afghanwomenataoldotcom>

10) CONSIDERATIONS FOR HANDLING MAIL — Females have *always* wanted to know more about how to handle the mail. :-) Well now there’s hope. Fresh from the postal service in the USA, here are some helpful tips. We share them knowing full well that some will say we’re overreacting… because after all, only a *handful* of letters have been determined to have been contaminated with anthrax in recent days in the USA. But hey… some of this stuff is probably common sense for all of us… because it’s a new day. So maybe… it’s not a bad idea to at least take notice. For example, maybe we’re all going to have to start looking at the return address. If the letter is at all lopsided or lumpy in appearance, don’t be so quick to tear it open. Be suspicious. What else should make you suspicious?

*** It’s hand-addressed and has no return address or bears one that you can’t read

*** It’s sealed with excessive amounts of tape

*** It’s marked with restrictive endorsements such as “Personal” or “confidential”.

*** It has excessive postage.

Now I’m not suggesting we become paranoid… but postal workers are advising all of us… worldwide… to begin realizing that … hey… the mail *can* contain stuff that *shouldn’t* “go through.” So what do we do in those cases? Here are some precautions:

*** Don’t handle it if you suspect at all that it might be contaminated

*** Don’t shake it, bump it, or sniff it

*** Wash your hands thoroughly

*** Notify your local law enforcement authorities.

10) THE BACK PAGE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLANS — Is your organization like ours? We see press releases about how important it is to do emergency response planning… so then we draw something up… but then years pass without its use… and everything gets out of date. If the events of Sept. 11th have taught us anything, they’ve taught us to be prepared for disasters beyond our imagination. No one in the FAA or FBI imagined the evil that could be carried out against the civilized world… until they saw it unfolding on their own office televisions. I guess… it’s time we dusted off those emergency response procedure instruction manuals again, eh? For us in Team Expansion, we’re going back to basics with simple stuff. We’ve had written instructions for all our teams now for 15 years… but few have actually implemented them. We don’t have fingerprint cards… or even data cards completed on every worker yet. But we’re about to re-start with new energy. My hunch is… there are many others feeling the same burden these days. May God grant us all mercy as we cautiously proceed forward.

HOW DO WE REPLACE INFOBEAT? (EMAIL NEWS SOURCES)

Brigada autoresponder Looking for some news source that will replace InfoBeat? Want to get news into your inbox on a daily basis? David sought answers (in a previous Brigada Today) and has stood well on his promise, and thanks to his faithful follow-through, we can now publish his findings. Just send a note to: email-newsatbrigadadotorg  (email-newsatbrigadadotorg)   to get his full report. Unfortunately, according to David, the replacements weren’t tremendous… but he does give some options. Check it out. Thanks David!

OPPORTUNITIES TO MINISTER TO MUSLIMS

Have the events of Sept. 11th put to an end any hopes of service in the Muslim world? Not on your life. For example, listen to Jeff, from Mission to Unreached Peoples: “Yes – we have numerous teaching opportunities (even invitations!) to serve the Lord in Muslim countries. Some positions have stipends, as well as additional financial help for housing and transportation.” Certainly the world situation compels us to be all the more vigilant in caring for the personal safety of our family and friends. But does that mean doors are closing. Quite the contrary. Listen again to Jeff, describing at the very least, mission opportunities that he’s trying to fill: “All you need to be an effective tool for the Lord is to have a heart for missions, a degree of any kind, and be a native English speaker. You will be blessed and you will be a blessing. The Lord can use you!” For more information, contact Jeff mupinfoatmupdotorg  (mupinfoatmupdotorg)   in the USA or via Net2Phone at 888-847-6950 or 206-781-3151 or check out http://www.mup.org.

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us! See the note above if you’d like to submit items for Brigada Today. Thanks for understanding. Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.

UPDATE ON HUMANITARIAN WORKERS IN AFGHANISTAN

Several have asked about the Shelter Now folks in Afghanistan. Apparently, their lawyer visited Kabul yesterday, but was not able to see the judge, or even speak with him. A man with the protocol department reportedly told the lawyer that everyone in the court was busy, and now not concerned with the case. In addition, these 8 friends have also been moved to a different location, described more “like a dungeon”. If you haven’t already prayed for these folks, now would be a good time.

MISSION TO MUSLIMS IN MOSQUE DESPITE CURRENT CRISIS

How do they do that? The answer is ‘Through Meetings for Better Understanding.’ (MBU) And it works! The pioneer of the method, a Egyptian Christian, says that several Muslims have become Christians through those gatherings. They can take place alternatively in a mosque, church, or a small group. A day after the bombs started falling on Afghanistan a previously planned MBU on the subject of war took place peacefully in a mosque in the UK. A Muslim and a Christian leader spoke for 30 minutes each on what their books say regarding the subject. This was followed by 30 minutes question time. MBU’s are not debates where each others faiths are publicly attacked. Neither are they dialogues with the goal to compromise the message. Each side simply presents its view on theological and social topics. Of course, the Christians have a tremendous advantage because the word of God is sharper than a two edged sword…(Heb. 4:12) In the time of fellowship that follows relationships are built and so the witness goes on and on. For more information and practical help on how to set up those meetings in your area contact administratoratbiblicalchristianitydotfreeservedotcodotuk  (administratoratbiblicalchristianitydotfreeservedotcodotuk)  . Their web site, http://www.biblicalchristianity.freeserve.co.uk offers helpful articles on explaining the Gospel to Muslims and those of other faiths.
