  1. SHARPEN YOUR INTERPERSONAL SKILLS — From Oct 7-11, 2002 in Toronto, Canada, sharpen *your* interpersonal skills in a course sponsored by MissionPrep/TIM Centre. This workshop for missionaries is taught by Ken Williams’ International Training Partners and is intended for mission personnel wanting to increase their knowledge, attitudes and skills in relating to others. A 216 page workbook is provided, in which each topic includes key articles, a Bible study, a self-assessment, and opportunities for growth. The Facilitator is Matthew Neigh. For more information email <micanadaatinterlogdotcom> or call Robert 416-606-9757. </micanadaatinterlogdotcom>

  2. “POW!” THOSE POP-UP ADS — Here is another simple utility that is available to get rid of those annoying popup ads. Run POW! while browsing on the net and it will automatically close those nasty popups that keep appearing. http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/pow.htm

  3. MUSIC IN MISSIONS SUMMARY — Our compiler, Phil, heard from almost 20 people from all over the world concerning his inquiry about the use of music in missions. … Phil’s address is <pperrinatgardner-webbdotedu> and his website is http://gardner-webb.edu/intra/pperrin/musicinmissions.htm </pperrinatgardner-webbdotedu>

  4. WE KNEW IT FIRST! — The Evangelical Christian Publishers’ Association has recognized what missions groups have always known – Operation World is one of the best books around! The ECPA awarded both Operation World and the family edition “Window on the World” with the Gold Medallion Award for Excellence on July 13 in Anaheim, California. This indicates clearly that people are becoming increasingly missions- minded and are recognizing the value of intercession for the nations!

Gabriel Resources offers missions discounts on both books, OW CD-Roms, maps & prayer calendars. Email Ellen Graf <ellenatomlitdotomdotorg> or call 1-866-732-6657 (toll-free, USA) / 706-554-1594 to order and for more information. </ellenatomlitdotomdotorg>

  5. SHORT-TERM MISSIONS – SPECIALIZED TRAINING — The “GO Prepared” specialized video training series known as the “Skills” has recently been released and is already proving to be practical and inspirational. Six new videos dealing with Construction, Medical, Fundraising, Recruitment, Evangelism, and how short-term missions trips impact the life of a church are now available. If you need assistance in any if these areas please contact Jim at <tcciattccidotorg> or visit his website </tcciattccidotorg>

FREE SOFTWARE TO HELP RAISE SUPPORT — (Here’s some software that was originally featured in the 7/12 Brigada Today, but unfortunately, the site below was down for one week just after the original release.) Keep track of all your ministry supporters using the RDMA (Resource Development Ministry Application) version 2.0. Written for missionaries, this software helps you keep track of all basic information, communication, and financial transactions for each church or individual that helps support you. According to the author, it also provides an easy way to print out mailing labels for selected groups. Go to http://members.truepath.com/rdma to find out more information and download it. If you have any questions, feel free to email <aldotschaueratnetzerodotnet>. </aldotschaueratnetzerodotnet>

  7. BIBLICAL STORYING CD-ROM’S — Here’s a great “biblical storying” CD by a talented teller-actor, Robert Delafield. The price is right: FREE!! 1. NEED A RETREAT CENTER? — Thanks to the hard work of Jolene, now you’ve got a great list from which to work! Get her list by sending a note to: <retreat-centersatbrigadadotorg> This list of Christian Retreat Centers includes everything from a “prophet’s room” in someone’s home to a luxury resort… from quiet time alone with no interruptions to professional counseling to a full day’s activities… from a percentage off normal fees to partially subsidized to suggested donation to the ministry to completely free of charge … The focus of these centers varies from crisis counseling to solitude, worship and prayer to spiritual revitalization. This same information is also available on the Internet at the Resource Center of the International Worship & Arts Network, where additions and corrections will be made as new information is acquired. See it at: http://www.worship-arts-network.com/OCretreatcenters.html Thanks for your hard work Jolene! </retreat-centersatbrigadadotorg>

  2. ANOTHER POP-UP EXTERMINATOR — Even though Pop-Up Killer has been killed (see the July 21 issue), there’s another pop-up killer that comes recommended by Tim and it’s also free. It’s called Pop-Up Stopper. It also has the advantage of being able to launch a window that would ordinarily be quashed by using some simple key strokes while clicking. It also comes in enhanced shareware versions. Find out more at: http://www.panicware.com/popupstopper.html

  3. EXPLORE YOUR OPTIONS AT THE USCWM — If you ever thought of working “behind-the-scenes” in missions mobilization, training, strategy or services, then perhaps “EXPLORE” is for you. Designed for people who wish to learn more about the U.S. Center for World Mission in Pasadena, CA, this 4-day seminar covers the history, impact and mission of the USCWM, with a focus on how you might use your gifts here to reach unreached people groups out there. The next EXPLORE Seminar is scheduled for September 25 – 28, 2002. Space is limited, so register early. For more information, please visit the USCWM website http://www.uscwm.org , or email <daviddotflynnatuscwmdotorg> . </daviddotflynnatuscwmdotorg>

  4. WANTED: A BUSINESS PLAN — Here’s a Brigada participant named Roland who would like to know if there are any successful business plans that have been developed which would provide support by and for ministry at the local level. He wrote, “There are passionate and capable indigenous leaders who are often consumed by economic struggle. Traditionally, the solution has been to raise support in America and then ship a portion of that money overseas. This system also has a tendency to develop an unhealthy dependence on stateside resources or force those in ministry to become full-time fundraisers themselves.” If you’re got a suggested plan for Roland to add to his compilation, send it on: <rolanddotheckatattdotnet>. Once he has a collection, we’ll share it with everyone here at Brigada. </rolanddotheckatattdotnet>

  5. ARABIC RESOURCES NEEDED — Workers in the 10/40 are putting together a “virtual library” of Arabic language resources (Bibles, Bible Studies, Books, etc.). This will allow Arab believers to access materials wherever they are via the Internet or CDROM. If you have or know of any resources that could be used in this “virtual library”, please, contact . If you have resources in *print*, please drop a note to <researchatsimdotorgdotza> . Once these directories are compiled, we’ll make them directory available in a sensitive way. </researchatsimdotorgdotza>

  6. FOR THOSE INVOLVED IN ESTABLISHING HOUSE CHURCHES… — You’ve *got* to see this list of ideas and resources: http://disciplethenations.org/index86.html#HC Whew! What a great collection! (Thanks Grace!!!)

  7. LEARN HOW TO RAISE FUNDS AND FRIENDS — Here’s a course that the author says will help you “Move beyond the fear factor and raise more funds in half the time.” The People Raising Coaches Clinic shows you how. Implement 10 key habits for success. In addition, you’ll be able to network with other Christian leaders responsible for coaching their staff in support raising. Get it all at a 2-day conference October 11- 12! Register by September 12th and save $50. For more information or to register on-line go to http://www.peopleraising.com/conferences.cfm or e-mail <billatpeopleraisingdotcom>. </billatpeopleraisingdotcom>

  8. HINDUISM TRAINING INSTITUTE — Here’s an intensive training institute in Hinduism slated for November 11-15, 2002 at the new facilities of Mission Training International at Palmer Lake, Colorado. If you are a missionary candidate, tent maker, or short-term missionary to the Hindu world, this training will assist you in understanding the Hindu worldview and effectively communicate the Gospel to the Hindus. Led by Natun Bhattacharya, himself from a Hindu Priest family and an experienced cross-cultural trainer, the training will also include facilitators from a variety of backgrounds (missionaries and Indian Pastors), with expertise in Hinduism. This is a unique training opportunity for those interested in working with people from Hindu faith. For more information call 800-896-3710 or 719-487-0111, write to Mission Training International at PO Box 1220, Palmer Lake, CO 80133, or email <infoatmtidotorg>. Be sure to check out the web site at http://www.mti.org. </infoatmtidotorg>

  9. PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW 6 — This year’s “Praying Through the Window 6” initiative focuses on the needs of Women and daughters in the 10/40 Window. Some 40 million intercessors participate in this thrust annually. To receive a prayer guide or more information log on at: http://www.win1040.com Daily radio profiles are being sent by Window International Network to radio stations across the U.S. to be aired daily in the month of October 2002 and beyond. If you are interested in an interview, contact <julieross6atyahoodotcom> for details. </julieross6atyahoodotcom>

  1. NEW FREE E-BOOK ON CELL GROUP STRATEGY — Here’s a new e-book by Dr. Mikel Neumann, based on years of experience as a missionary, international seminar leader, and research. His experience in this vital area of ministry, recently gained him funding from the Billy Graham Center to study and write a separate book on home groups around the world. The e-book “Reaching Your City with Cell (Home) Groups” can be downloaded for FREE at http://acquirewisdom.com/g.o/brigada

  2. NEW BOOK BY FORMER HINDU ON SHARING CHRIST WITH HINDUS — Sharing Your Faith With a Hindu explains historical and contemporary Hindu customs, ritual practices, and intellectual obstacles to Christianity, and offers practical tips and tools on how to win Hindus to the Lord. The author, Madasamy Thirumalai, was raised a Hindu and became a believer in Jesus more than 20 years ago. He is a professor of world religions and an academic dean at Bethany College of Missions. For more information and an excerpt visit http://www.bethanyhouse.com . Special discounts are available for ministries who give away copies! Bethany House ships internationally as well. To order: <csatbethanyhousedotcom  (csatbethanyhousedotcom)  >; tel. in the USA or via Net2phone 1-800-328-6109 or (952) 829-2079; USA FAX: 866-220-8376 or 952-829- 2503.

  3. TEACH ENGLISH IN JERUSALEM — Want to teach English in Jerusalem? You can! The dates are September 2 – 28, 2002. The cost is US $650.00 which includes tuition and textbooks. Accommodation excluding meals from 2nd to 28th September is just $150.00 per person. For further inquiries, special arrangements or considerations, write <TESOLatwmmedotorg  (TESOLatwmmedotorg)  >.

  4. GET TO THE CORE OF THE BIBLE… IN THE HOLY LAND — Now you can study the “School of Biblical Studies Core Course (SBSCC)” in Jerusalem/Israel. It’s 3 months of focused Bible study that reveals the power of the Word of God to penetrate the heart, September 22nd – December 14th, 2002, in Jerusalem. Cost is US$ 2,295. For more information, log on at: http://www.sbscc.net Or write <sbsccatwindowministriesdotorg  (sbsccatwindowministriesdotorg)  >.

  5. DO-IT-YOURSELF LIST SERVING — Here’s a piece of software called Gammadyne Mailer that can be used to maintain email lists, e.g., send prayer updates with addresses from a newsletter list database. It does email merge, will update your existing database for email address errors, and even allows you to host discussion lists simply using your existing POP3 email box and connection to the web. Moderate technical skills are needed and, it’s apparently available only for those running Windows. Registration is US$130. For more information, see: http://www.gammadyne.com/mmail.htm or email: <gregwatgammadynedotcom  (gregwatgammadynedotcom)  > Granted… those with large lists would be overwhelmed by the number of emails coming in . . . and I suppose if you travel some (with your email shut down during your travel), this would not be a good solution.

  6. HOW DO YOU MOBILIZE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS? — Do you have information on Mobilizing/Exposure programs for universities? A professor at a Christian International University in South Korea would like information/leads on missions mobilization and/or exposure programs that have worked at other universities and/or churches. Because the university would like to start an extracurricular program to help mobilize and expose their international students to missions and they’re looking for ideas! Thanks! Please send replies to <joyceat123athotmaildotcom  (joyceat123athotmaildotcom)  >. She’ll compile a report for us to redistribute here on Brigada.

  7. BUILDING DIGITAL LIBRARIES AT YOUR CHRISTIAN COLLEGE? — Maybe you’ve heard about the efforts to build connected digital libraries. Maybe you’re doing it to support digital learning from your Christian college or university! :-) Maybe you can read it via 2.5 G cell phones (and later 3G cell phones). If you’re tackling this challenge… and if you’re interested in brainstorming about how subscriptions could be underwritten by western churches, write Ed <editoratadrisdotorg  (editoratadrisdotorg)  >. See his newsletter at http://www.adris.org . He’ll compile a brief report for a future Brigada Today.

  8. AFFORDABLE SECURE WEBMAIL — Global Resources for Computing, (GRC) just rolled out its new SSL (Secure) Webmail service, an anonymous Webmail service for organizations operating in areas where higher than standard level of security for email is required. This new service will offer SSL Based Webmail, POP3(secure) and IMAP (secure) services. Contact GRC at 909-795-3877 for more information or email <infoatgrcomputingdotnet  (infoatgrcomputingdotnet)  > or log on at http://www.grcomputing.net/webmail.html

  9. RETREAT AND “R&R” RESOURCES — Jolene is compiling a list of R&R/retreat locations especially geared toward those in ministry (artists’ retreats, prayer retreats, personal-solitude-time alone with God locations, vacation spots). If you know of an available guest room, church’s missionary house or retreat location that caters to missionaries or Christian artists, let her know at <jowilsonatiowatelecomdotnet  (jowilsonatiowatelecomdotnet)  > . She will compile the results for an auto responder as well as post them on the internet. Please include as much information as possible (name, type of location, length of stay, what they offer, cost, contact information and URL).

  10. TRAVELING? LOOK UP A CLC! — Are you traveling somewhere this summer on vacation? Look up a Christian Literature Center, pick up something you can hand out to the folks you meet along the way, then prayerfully use your vacation trip for more than a vacation! Wendy did it. Check out the website for one of the stores she visited in Italy… http://www.clcitaly.com/live/home.php (Thanks Wendy!)

  11. MUSIC MISSIONS RESEARCH — Phil is researching the use of music in missions since 1987
(http://gardner-webb.edu/intra/pperrin/musicinmissions.htm). If you (1) have personal experience that can be included, (2) would like to be included on his website list, (3) have need for musician volunteers to be posted on the website, (4) would like to volunteer for music mission projects, or (5) have resources to add to the resource page or any other corrections or additions, e-mail him at <pperrinatgardner-webbdotedu  (pperrinatgardner-webbdotedu)  > . He’ll send us a brief summary report later.

  12. MORE EASYENGLISH PSALMS — Book four (Ps 90 to 106) is now available from Wycliffe Associates’ web site – http://www.easyenglish.info . Further information may be obtained from <martinateasyenglishdotinfo  (martinateasyenglishdotinfo)   >.

  13. IT”S GOOD TO “GO” – IT’S CRITICAL TO “GO PREPARED” — “GO Prepared” the “Essential” series is, according to the author, the only Short-Term videotape Training Series of it’s kind in the world today. These tapes are designed to complement the ministry of your local church or mission agency, and are a great training tool for the rookie as well as seasoned Short-Term missionaries. There are three tapes with two training sessions on each. Over three hours of valuable training by Internationally recognized Missions Leaders. Each session can be presented alone or be incorporated into your present training program. For more information contact Jim at <tcciattccidotorg  (tcciattccidotorg)  > or log on at http://www.tcci.org .

  14. ANOTHER POSSIBLE SOLUTION FOR SPAM — Here’s another possible solution for getting rid of spam: http://www.w2knews.com/rd/rd.cfm?id=020715TP-iHateSpam At least one Brigada participant says it works for him! (Thanks Phil!)

  15. POP-UP KILLER KILLED, FOR NOW — Those who tried to obtain the pop- up killer highlighted in our July 5th edition (“TIRED OF POP-UP ADS?”) met with a sad message that the pop-up killer software had, itself, been killed! The author has currently given up on publishing his product. But he’s also suggesting that someone else might take over the development. If you’re interested, don’t give up too soon. Check back at: http://software.xfx.net/utilities/popupkiller/ to find out what happens in this defy-death thriller! :-) ‘Course, James wants to let people know Netscape’s new Mozilla (and Netscape) browser can do this without requiring third-party software. Just go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Scripts & Plugins and change to your heart’s content. He usually disallowed webpages from “opening of unrequested windows”, “open link in a new window”, “move or resize existing windows” and “raise or lower windows”. Also, you can restrict animation to just once by changing Edit > Preferences > Privacy & Security > Images. Sounds like a great feature! (Thanks James!)

  16. LOOKING FOR A MISSIONS PASTOR? — ACMC maintains a list of individuals seeking a missions pastor position and a list of U.S. churches seeking a missions pastor. To put your name or your church name on the list or to request a list send an email with appropriate contact information to <davidmaysatacmcdotorg  (davidmaysatacmcdotorg)  > .

  2. ACTIONS AT THE 4TH TIE CONGRESS — … included the election of Dr. Danny Martin as the new International Director. His first order of business was commending and thanking the outgoing director, Mrs. Berit Helgoy Kloster, of Norway. Dr. Martin has proposed that TIE become a more service oriented organization with its headquarters in Phuket, Thailand along with the Asia Center for World Missions. Ben Bester, former director and training specialist from South Africa’s Global Careers, has joined the Asia Center staff and will be responsible for TIE’s training information. TIE is planning to send out monthly news letters via email. If you are interested in receiving a copy notify <Benjaminatasiacenterdotac  (Benjaminatasiacenterdotac)  > . Prepaid service may be purchased online and there is no expiration date or penalty for not using the minutes and there is no monthly service charge. http://www.BAMnet.com or call 1-877-322-6638. Thanks Rich! ( <richatbamnetdotcom  (richatbamnetdotcom)  >)

  6. CROSS-CULTURAL MISSIONS AND THE WEB — Very few mission groups actually use the Web for direct evangelism, even though it is a key to the 10-40 Window. The Internet is a medium just waiting for missions to exploit – and returned/retired missionaries too. The Web Evangelism Guide is available free for any mission to insert as a syndicated page within their own website, blending in completely and with the opportunity for a customized introduction and ending. See what it could look like on your site:

  7. FREE SOFTWARE TO HELP RAISE SUPPORT — Keep track of all your ministry supporters using the RDMA (Resource Development Ministry Application) version 2.0. If you have any questions, feel free to email <AldotSchaueratnetzerodotnet  (AldotSchaueratnetzerodotnet)  >.

  8. NEED A PRIVATE MAILBOX? — Try http://www.pmbx.net. “Ron” seems to have what it takes to serve you! Check it out!

  9. GET THE SCOOP ON INSURANCE — Thanks to our good friend, Ken, for refreshing the file on insurance for missionaries. It contains a wealth of free TESL industry- related info for teachers, including ‘Countries @ a Glance’ – the most comprehensive TESL guide to pay, taxes, visas, etc, in 50 of the world’s most popular teaching destinations.

  11. THE BACKPAGE: 10 CHURCH PLANTING ELEMENTS — Ten Universal Elements. That’s what David Garrison found while researching for his little booklet, _Church Planting Movements_. He found that, after surveying church planting movements (CPMs) around the world, these 10 elements seemed present in every single one of them. It probably goes without saying, then, that those who want to start a CPM would want to invest some time in figuring out how to implement these 10 practices as a matter of course:

    *** Prayer
    *** Abundant gospel sowing
    *** Intentional church planting
    *** Scriptural authority
    *** Local leadership
    *** Lay leadership
    *** Cell or house churches
    *** Churches planting churches
    *** Rapid reproduction
    *** Healthy churches

I suppose some of those are common sense. For example, healthy churches grow faster than unhealthy churches… “Duh!” But the truth is, we seldom think *proactively* about all 10 items comprehensively. And maybe that’s part of what helps a church to grow — thinking about doing it all right in *concert*, so all 10 cylinders hit in stride at the same time!

That’s probably what it’s going to take in some of our tougher fields. I suppose that’s what it *might* take in yours.

God bless your weekend! (Note: See David’s complete little booklet at: http://www.imb.org/CPM/default.htm What’s more, at: http://www.imb.org/GlobalVision/NewDirections/new_direction_dir.htm get it as a PDF, or in Spanish as either a PDF or Word doc. To order a free copy while quantities last, see… http://resources.imb.org/index.cfm/fa/prodlist/CatID/5/DeptID/1.htm Thanks to David and the folks at the IMB for unselfishly making it available on the web!)
