  1. COMPLETELY FLOORED BY YOUR GENEROSITY — I want to be perfectly honest: I am completely humbled… even *floored* by your generosity, compassion and love! This past week brought us *significantly* closer to our goal of paying for a Brigada Secretary — to help us stay “up to date” and “in the air” for the long haul, churning out resources and mobilization ideas in Brigada Today. One anonymous donor gave [drum roll please] $5000. (That’s five *thousand* dollars.) He had nothing to sell, declined to feature his own work, and even declined a receipt for a tax deduction! I *will* tell you that he is indeed involved in Christian outreach, but his mission work takes place in a sensitive land. Perhaps you can identify… he wanted to help, but didn’t do it for any personal reward. It was totally an unselfish act, to try to help us get the word out regularly. He wrote, “Thank you for your faithfulness in serving the missions community through Brigada. … I have sent a $5,000.00 contribution toward your secretary. I clearly remember the days when I wished I had one and didn’t have the resources. Please keep this anonymous. Our mission is much better performed when only God knows who we are. You have been faithful to God and God is always faithful to you. We are simply thankful to bring this cup of cool water to your door.” Whoa. That’s quite a swig! :-) I’ll admit, when I first read the note, I figured it was one of those Internet scams. Then seconds later, I saw the PayPal notice that $5000 had been deposited in our PayPal account. Suddenly, weekly Brigada Todays started passing through my mind, … all the way back to January of 1995. Suddenly I realized there really *are* some people out there reading this stuff, and maybe some who are actually *using* it.

  3. OTHER SPONSORS THIS PAST WEEK — John Walton writes, “Here’s $25 with thanks to the 5 Brigada readers who bought a copy of The Toolbox for Video Storytelling during the month of October. John keeps his word. Don’t forget, if you need a good book on producing videos for your church or mission — John is making good on his promise to donate $5 for each copy sold. Learn more at: http://www.VillageAve.com/Brigada Thanks, too, to our new friends at Wilcannia, NSW, Australia, who minister to Australian Aborigines. We appreciate their sponsorship of $25! They have seen in the last 6 years 39% of their town turn to Christ. Learn more at http://www.wilcanniariveroflife.com Thanks to these new Brigada sponsors!

  4. BLESSED HOPE LONG DISTANCE GIVES *MONTHLY* HOPE — Now you can help create a *monthly* income for the Brigada secretary and save money at the same time! Through a partnership with Blessed Hope Long Distance, Brigada will begin earning a significant commission each and every month on all the long distance bills of those who subscribe to long distance service through this link: http://www.lowermyphonebill.com/brigada 200 new customers would provide about $200 extra dollars each and every month. 1000 customers might just about pay for the secretary! This is a great domestic plan and the state-to-state rate (in the contiguous U.S.) is 4.9 cents/minute with 6-second billing, NO fees and NO minimums. You can find your instate rate and international rates at the website. Blessed Hope is a Christian-owned company so you’ll also know your dollars are not going to fund what some feel are ungodly and anti- family causes of larger secular long distance providers. Our agents for this program, Neil & Darla Sautter, are the missions-minded parents of five who are building their Blessed Hope business as a way of becoming self-supporting so they themselves can return to overseas ministry in the future. Neil would like to be a TESOL teacher in China, Japan or Spain, should the Lord so lead. (Thanks Blessed Hope!)

  5. NATIONAL MISSIONARY TRAINING FORUM — Here’s a course that… I’ll have to admit… looks *great*. “Outstanding Practices in Mission Training” is the theme for the Forum from January 15-17, 2004, in Richmond, VA , at the IMB’s Missionary Learning Center. NMTF is a gathering of mission trainers from agencies, church, and schools (over 140 people from 60 organizations attended in 2003). There will be 14 workshops profiling “outstanding practices.” Participants will interact with practitioners, learning together how to make mission training more effective. There are three “pre-Forum” sessions so that trainers can get training, including: Church Planting Movements (Training for Trainers), Leadership Encounter with Jesus, and Situational Leadership II. To learn more as well as register, go to: http://www.icelonline.com/NMTF2004.html

  6. CONTACTING MISSIONARIES — Do you want to find missionaries for missions promotion only to be blocked by missions agencies concerned about security? PeopleTeams.org has 576 teams of missionaries online. In fact, PeopleTeams.org boasts of having every missionary team Web site in the world. These are not individual missionary family Webs, but instead, you’ll find online the way that missionaries *prefer* to be contacted. That way you can dialog with the personnel who are working in some very difficult places, not just the easy-to-reach field personnel. PeopleTeams.org is a mixture of many different agencies, too. Individual Web sites are frequently a coalition of many cooperating missions groups that pool their efforts to present the material you see online. You can send emails or letters to teams who will be happy to see that you receive a reply in a timely manner.

  7. RETHINKING BIBLICAL WITNESS AMONG HINDUS — From January 2-4, 2004, the Rethinking Forum is sponsoring a conference on the Hindu-Christian interface from the perspective of the Rethinking Movement in Indian church history. Friday will focus on the work and witness of individuals past and present while Saturday will be a seminar on practical perspectives and concerns in ministry. The Chicago area conference will close by lunch on Sunday following a worship service. For more information contact Jamie infoatrethinkingforumdotcom

  8. FINISHERS CANADA FORUM — The first forum of Finishers Canada is being held Saturday November 22nd at Tyndale College in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Speakers include Nelson Annan, Dave Toycen and Dave Mannings. Participants may choose between 5 seminars during the day. Further information, costs and registration information are available from finishersatiatwdotca (or 519-763-6147). They’re also working on a website at http://wwwfinisherscanada.ca though at press time it still returned a “The page cannot be displayed” error.

  9. FOLDING DISPLAYS? — I’m in the thick of trying to purchase a folding display. I must confess, I sometimes go through phases where I ask myself, where did we ever come up with this display thing, anyway? I mean… on the one hand, it seems like few church members actually really *look* at these things up close. Yet a decently designed portable “lit” display seems inevitably to cost hundreds of dollars. Either way, it seems like part of the “missions fair” culture is to ask us to all come with “nimlocks-in-hand”. Yikes. I’ve scouted some sites, but if you have some good ones … or if you know of the “best price” for a Skyline or a “ShowStyle” or whatever, Mark mark_simpson53athotmaildotcom is willing to take down the URL then assemble a report for us. (Thanks Mark! We appreciate your help. And to those with suggested sources, no need to copy me. Mark will compile the list. Thanks again!)

  10. GLOBALMISSIOLOGY.NET — After years of planning & preparation, www.globalmissiology.net – a new quarterly electronic journal is now being launched. The organizers there would like us to spread the word, especially to those who can’t afford subscribing to traditional missiological journal but have internet access.

  11. CRISIS CONSULTING INT’L OFFERS 4-DAY SEMINAR — During the dates of Jan. 26-29, 2004, at the Wycliffe Mobilization Center in Orlando, FL, CCI will offer its Crisis Management Seminar. Training will be provided in the following core areas: Evacuation Management, The Terrorism Threat, Contingency Planning, Policies, Leadership in Emergencies, Strategic Risk Forecasting, Tactical Risk Assessment, and Crisis Management Teams. 15. UNREACHED PEOPLES CONFERENCE — For those interested in reaching the unreached peoples of the 10/40, check out this conference, November 9- 14. The “Revolution” conference is an interdenominational, inter- organizational missions conference. Groups such as New Tribes Missions, Red Sea Team International, Frontiers, YWAM, Operation Mobilization, Calvary International, Wycliffe, the US Center for World Missions and many more will be represented for this “10/40-focused” event. 1. THANKS FOR THE PARTNERSHIP! — We are once again blessed with a few new partners, all of whom are mentioned at http://www.brigada.org (click on “Sponsor“). Some want to increase the likelihood that their item will appear sooner rather than later. (We currently have over 30 items we’re queuing up for future Brigada Todays. We are *never* able to get everything in the current edition. I’ll be perfectly honest: we indeed feel a debt of gratitude to those who partner with us to sponsor our Brigada Secretary, so … admittedly, those folks do get preferential treatment.) Sponsors also get *human* help in navigating the waters of changing their subscription information. :-) But still others are anonymous. Their only apparent motive is to help provide that Brigada Secretary for the whole Brigada family, as well as holding out the hope that Brigada can always be free and on *time*! :-) One wrote this past week, “And thanks again for all your hard work to keep BT going. I certainly appreciate it and I know many others do too, even if they don’t say so.” Thankfully, some have indeed understood and “said so.” Another ministry wrote, “We have mailed Team Expansion this morning a contribution to the support of a secretary for Brigada. You all are providing such a tremendous service to the missionary community. It is a privilege for us to help your ministry in this small way. Thank you so much for having periodically posted our announcements over this last year. We appreciate this service so very much. We would like to help again in the future as the Lord provides.” Yahoooooo! :-) And the Wycliffe people keep raising the bar… “I have been reading Brigada since 1997 or so and always find great stuff. Thanks for your ministry from another Wycliffe mobilizer!” May God bless Wycliffe! :-)

  2. HELP SUPPORT BRIGADA; GET A BOOK ON EFFECTIVE SHORT-TERM MISSIONS! – – Place an order for 20 (or more) copies of the 2003/4 Edition of Into All the World Magazine, entitled SHORT-TERM MISSIONS TODAY (STMT), and $15 will go to support Brigada, plus you receive a FREE copy of the new book “Maximum Impact Short-Term Missions” (a $20 value). Copies of STMT come for $2/copy for the first 20 copies, and just $1/copy for all copies over twenty, plus modest S&H costs. Contact Bill Berry, Publisher at intomorecopiesataoldotcom . An invoice will be enclosed with your shipment. Sorry: this offer applies ONLY to shipments to US & Canadian addresses. (Thanks for the thought, Bill! Let’s hope they all like your magazine! :-) These and all other such funds will be used to provide a Brigada Secretary, with the hopes that we can keep Brigada free, and on *time*!)

  3. ONE OF THE CHEAPEST COUNTRY-TO-COUNTRY RATES — Try an international calling service that reportedly has one of the cheapest country-to-country phone rates. Learn more at http://www.brigada.org/phone.html (Our thanks to UWT for the promise of sponsorship, if folks sign up. Please let us know about your experience with this service. Thanks!)

  4. LEARN A PRACTICAL SKILL FOR MISSIONS — Simplified dental care can open many doors to evangelism and relationship building among the unreached peoples of the world. No extractions, injections, drills, electricity, or sophisticated equipment are involved- only simple hand instruments, a compassionate heart, and two weeks of your time are needed. Now you can bring greatly needed dental care to your community. Courses offered monthly in Texas. Learn more at http://www.dentaltrainingformissions.com or write dentaltrainingformissionsatattdotnet . (And thanks much for the partnership in producing Brigada!)

  5. SAVE 50% ON COPIES OF “SEND ME!” — 10 case lots of SEND ME! Your Journey to the Nations,” by Steve Hoke & Bill Taylor, are available at a 50% Discount (just $4/copy instead of the list price of $8). 38 copies to a case. $152/case + UPS or Postal Charges. We will be glad to invoice you. Plus, $25 donation goes to support Brigada for each case ordered from this notice. Contact Bill Berry at Bberry4215ataoldotcom . Mention “Brigada offer.” Valid only on shipments to US & Canadian addresses. (Again, Bill, our “hats off” to you for this thought!)

  6. ADDITIONAL WORKERS NEEDED TO OVERCOME AIDS IN AFRICA — Thanks to “ACTION“, who took action to send a $50 sponsorship this past week! They wrote, “Thank you again for Brigada! We will continue to mention this need to enable readers to give on a regular basis. You do so much for us, we need to be aware of your financial needs.” ACTION is has a current major focus on the problem of AIDS in Africa. “We are trusting for 30 additional missionaries to serve in Malawi, Uganda and Zambia. It is estimated that 6300 Africans die daily from AIDS; 11,000 persons are newly infected daily. ACTION is making a special effort through our AIDS and Orphan Crisis Care and Evangelism Ministry to reach as many as possible with the gospel and compassionate care.” More ACTION workers are needed. Learn more. “Please pray with us about this,” they wrote. (Thanks again!)

  7. NEW LEVEL OF RESEARCH AVAILABLE TO BRIGADA READERS — Okay… the truth is, it’s available to all Internet browsers, but here’s what you’ve got to ask yourselves: where did you *hear* about it first? :-) the “it” in this case is the online World Christian Database (WCD), brought to you by some of the same folks who brought you the World Christian Encyclopedia (WCE)! Todd Johnson, co-author of the WCE, is one of the driving forces behind the new Center for the Study of Global Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. The WCD represents the core of the data supporting the World Christian Encyclopedia (WCE) and World Christian Trends (WCT). The online WCD includes detailed information on 34,000 Christian denominations and on religions in every country of the world. In addition, extensive data is available on 238 countries and 13,000 ethnolinguistic peoples, as well as data on 7,000 cities and 3,000 provinces. Statistics in the online WCD represent a significant update of the data published in WCE/WCT in 2001. Now here’s the most amazing part of all: It’s all available to you at absolutely no charge! Nada! Free! Honestly, I don’t get it. (Read on for more info.)

  8. WORLD CHRISTIAN DATABASE ONLINE! — Back in the days of the research and publication of the World Christian Encyclopedia (WCE), I remember researchers quipping that David Barrett would never share much of his “inside info” (even though these researchers shared their data with him! :-) ). Reportedly, he was always afraid that, once shared, nobody would buy his books! Well guess what: somehow, he (or his partner), has managed to “open up the store”! And what a great store it is. I love the simple search engine, and that’s the way I believe you should try to access your information. Just put in the name of the people group (or country, or province, or just about anything else connected with a religion) you’re researching, click, and see the information pop up in front of you. This is the kind of thing we dreamed about trying to produce in 1995. And it’s real-time, not just a collection of PDFs. Oh… and I almost forgot: you’ll need the URL! :-) You can get there either one of two ways. You can go via Todd Johnsion’s personal web page: http://www.globalchristianity.org Or directly through the WCD link itself: http://www.worldchristiandatabase.org
(Note: At “presstime”, this link was unavailable; but keep trying. It’ll come back “alive” again, I’m convinced.)
Set a link, because I guarantee you you’ll want to come back here to check something. I already have. Here’s what I wrote to Todd this past week, when he informed us it was finally “live” (he’s been letting us beta test it since early October, but by agreement, I couldn’t tell you about it yet): “It’s great, Todd. No… it’s fantastic. What a tremendous service to release it *free*. It’s *so* digestible… *so* much easier to find the data… *so* quick . It let me zero in on a people group from Cote d’Ivoire lickety-split. Perhaps the most useful evangelization research page on the entire web. Thanks for your tireless work!” So there you have it… literally! And to David Barrett… and now Todd Johnson, we’re all incredibly grateful. May God help you figure out how to make ends meet, so this information will always be available to Brigada readers… and more!

  9. MORE GOOD NEWS! BETHANY UNREACHED PROFILES STILL REACHABLE — Thanks to the half dozen or so readers who did their homework and located the Bethany Profiles on Unreached Peoples. You all are great helpers! http://www.ksafe.com/profiles/home.html (Thanks Dwane, Lynda, Henry

  10. DICTIONARY OF THEOLOGICAL TERMS IN SIMPLIFIED ENGLISH — Both the Dictionary of Theological Terms in Simplified English and the accompanying Student Workbook have the potential to be very valuable tools for their intended audiences (international students and pastors who have a reasonable command of English and English-speaking lay people). The Dictionary itself is easy to use and contains many useful features in addition to its definitions such as guide words, cross references, biblical references, and original language references. The definitions give a balanced look at the meaning of the words often presenting several contrasting views. We asked for input from the new Training Director at Team Expansion, Glen Gibson. (He has 17 years experience training church leaders and pastors, and he will probably have his Ph.D. from Fuller before Christmas.) He thought about the courses he had offered among those who use English as a second language and observed, “I would have loved for all of them to have this tool by their side as they sat in class or did their assignments.” He went on to tell me, “The Student Workbook is also a good tool to help accomplish its stated purpose of equipping the “intermediate level English student to negotiate through a theological dictionary and eventually, theological writings.” In fact all English speakers would likely benefits from working through the exercises in this book. Helpful methods of using dictionaries, studying theological terms, and learning vocabulary are laid out in well-designed exercises.” He wasn’t quite as excited about the accompanying workbook, however. “The Dictionary is simple enough to use that a person with a reasonable command of English will be able to use it without taking the time to study the Student Workbook.” At the same time, he judged that the added investment wouldn’t be for naught. “Anyone who takes the time to study through the workbook will benefit greatly by expanding their ability to not just use the Dictionary, but also study other theological writings.” (Thanks for your “take” on these, Glen!) These books should be available from Amazon.com or your favorite Bible bookstore.

  11. TO BOUNCE MESSAGES TO SPAMMERS, OR NOT — The debate continues. Chris, a Brigada participant from World Harvest Mission, wrote recently, “You’ve opened up a very interesting topic, discussing the ethics of sending bounce messages to spammers. Here’s my two cents worth. General Principle: It is not unethical to use deception against the enemy in times of warfare. Application to the use of bounce messages against spammers: This is warfare and spammers are the enemy.” I see Chris’ point. Yet, due to the parallel factor (that spammers rarely give their real return addresses anyway), I still have disabled my “bounce” capability in MailWasher, especially since I found out that it forges the “postmaster” line to make it look like your ISP postmaster sent the bounce-a-gram. :-( Not a pleasant thought, for those of us who want to be honest in the small things in life. :-( (But again, maybe it’s “war”! :-) Thanks anyway, Chris!)

  12. TEACHING ENGLISH — Christians resident in N America, Australia or New Zealand can find TEFL opportunities at ESL-Jobs.com: http://esljobs.gospelcom.net/ (Thanks Tony!)

  13. SHORT TERM MISSION LEADERS TRAINING SEMINAR — Commit Ministries is offering two, high quality, low-cost, 3-day seminars; one in sunny Tampa Florida in the Winter (February 5-7, 2004), and another in Honolulu Hawaii (oh, my! :-) ), April 22-24, 2004. This seminar is a comprehensive, cutting-edge, intensive program designed to prepare Christians to lead short term ministry teams worldwide. Each participant will acquire everything necessary to develop or augment a thorough short term ministry program for their respective church or mission agency and gain the skills/knowledge necessary to effectively lead short-term ministry teams. For registration information, contact COMMIT Ministries, infoatcommitministriesdotorg , or visit their website at www.commitministries.org

  14. TAKING THE ‘EX’ OUT OF ‘EX-MISSIONARY’ — Any former missionary who has returned home for any reason can still have an outreach ministry to their country of service. The Web provides one avenue for outreach. But there is also much scope for creating a simple and cheap literature program from home – read how Jane and Beryl were led into this ministry for Fula dialects and Swahili: http://www.gospelcom.net/guide/resources/missionary.php

  15. LAST CHANCE FOR YOUR DISCOUNT ON THE CD RESEARCH TOOL — Don’t forget that if you’ve been pondering that CD, with all the great maps, profiles, and other research, better stop pondering and start clicking. Less than a handful of days remain, if you intend to get the special Brigada discount (until the end of October). The “Countries and Peoples of the World” CD-ROM, a Brigada sponsor, makes a great source for mission fairs, faith-promise rallies, and tons more. It’ll help you pray, recruit, send, train, and motivate. The graphics are great. The interface is simple. Get it at: http://www.ywam.org/books/countries_and_peoples.htm
If you wait beyond next Friday, expect to pay quite a bit more.

It’s a practical guide of how to organize, outline, and communicate God’s Word clearly and effectively. This book is intended for those who are inexperienced in public speaking and is excellent to equip new missions recruits who may be called on to speak anytime, anywhere! Get it from Gabriel Resources, which, by the way, offers discounts to individuals, missionaries, mission organizations and churches. Email orderatomlitdotomdotorg or call 1-8MORE-BOOKS (1-866-732-6657) toll-free in the USA & Canada or 706-554-1594.

  6. LATEST ON THE WAR AGAINST SPAM — Yikes. These Linux people are churning out the options. Check out SpamAssassin . “T.C.” says it’s worth a look… and superior to SpamBouncer. And… did I tell you I’ve voluntarily stopped using the “bounce” feature in MailWasher? After receiving several emails criticizing its deceitful nature, I decided I’d better bow out of it. I still use MailWasher to filter and flag spam, then delete it at the press of a button, but I configured the program to *not* send back the bounce-a-grams to the spammers. For one thing, folks told me it was a white lie. But what’s more, others pointed out that the reply addresses were almost *always* contrived. So the only people suffering from my combative mortar “return fire” were the ISPs being targeted by spammers themselves — by listing them in their “From:” boxes.

  7. VOLUNTEER MUSIC MISSIONS OPPORTUNITY — Volunteer Christian musicians are needed to help lead a music leadership training camp for one week in Les Cayes, Haiti. The camp is used to train music leaders for churches, new church starts, and for evangelism and church planting. The focus of the camp is composition of Chronological Bible Story-songs using indigenous Haitian musical styles. For more information, please write to: dawndotgoodwinatcbregiondotcom or may call directly to Haiti: (011-509-245-5988) This is sponsored by the International Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention. The dates of this opportunity are July 31-August 10, 2004.

  8. “PARADIGMS OF THE FUTURE” REMIXED — We’ve gotten some negative feedback on our listing of “Paradigms Of The Future” (Item #6 in the 9/19 edition), on the web at http://www.christianfutures.com Thanks to “Joseph”, in Japan, who did some major reading on the site and discovered sections which talk of “no hell and all creeds and beliefs can work together for the God of Gods.” Thanks for the feedback, Joseph… and you raise a good point. We do our best to try to watch out for off-the-wall stuff… but please always remember to check these things out for yourself. See the “DISCLAIMER” section in the “Closing Stuff” below. That having been said, we’ll try, whenever possible to catch this kind of thing and give you a heads up. Just always remember that some are going to get through the gate. In this case, we knew the contributor and his reputation… so we assumed it was all okay. Lesson learned.

  9. IN SEARCH OF MISSING BETHANY PROFILES — We’re still trying to find out what happened to all the Bethany Unreached People Profiles. Dan Scribner recently wrote to us about it. He’s the former research guy for AD2000 & Beyond… and current stats guy for JoshuaProject.net. His findings? “The base URL was changed from www.bethany.com to www.bethanynorth.com The rest of the URL seemed to the be same except in a few cases of the cluster peoples. Just two weeks ago this was true. I redid all the Joshua Project profiles to point to the new URLs. … However, when I tried today, www.bethanynorth.com was a deadend / 404. Not sure what the deal is. Will let you know if I find differently.” Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to find any further word on this dead-end trail. :-(

  10. MISSIONS GATHERINGS IN EUROPE? — IIbET (Iberoamerican Institute for Cross Cultural Studies, http://www.iibet.org) is interested in knowing of the Missions Gatherings and Events around Europe, particularly those who are focused on the Muslim world. Also, a list is being put together of all the Hispanic (Spanish speaking) churches in Europe. If you can help with either one of these areas, please write Dan Johnson djohnsonIVatmyrealboxdotcom . (Dan, please let us know what you find and we’ll post it here in Brigada.)

  11. BRIGADA READERS FIND HOPE AT HEALING FOR THE NATIONS — For eleven years, Healing for the Nations Intensive Retreats have been a source of healing and hope for people from all over the world. Recently, some Brigada subscribers responded to the HFN ad placed in Brigada Today and made the journey to Atlanta to attend the one week retreat held monthly at a beautiful place called Red Top Mountain north of the city. As one of those missionaries put it, “My only regret is that I didn’t do the retreat about ten years ago”. Just wanted you to know that we aren’t into any full-out advertising mode here. Brigada is still Brigada.)

  14. HOW CAN YOU SPOT A “PRAYER SPAMMER?” — This is a great question. Fred, a Brigada participant, wrote recently to ask about this. He had received several messages that ended something like… “Send this prayer request to 10 people.. to show them you love them, if you are not ashamed of Jesus,” or something similar. I’m not sure how to respond to this kind of message. I already receive a hundred or more prayer/mission reports per month. You probably receive more than your share too. My suggestion: Give people the honest option, before just assuming that you should add to their mix. Even if a really spiritual guy prays a full hour a day, there’s still an eventual *limit* to how many things for which he or she can pray. So give ’em a break… and ask before you assume they’ll want to be on your list.

  15. LAST CHANCE TO BUY THE CD-ROM TOOL — Don’t forget… You only have a until the end of October to get the special introductory pricing on the “Countries and Peoples of the World” CD-ROM, a Brigada sponsor. The stated aims of the project are:

  1. YOU’VE GOT SPONSORS! — Are you wondering why in the *world* are we “on time” with Brigada Today? Two big reasons: First, with the new Brigada Secretary you’ve helped us acquire, we’re finally getting the to do list chopped down to something more manageable!!! Yahooo! But there’s a second reason: After the way everybody has pitched in, we’d feel *guilty* if we *didn’t* deliver on time! :-) :-) :-) So… Here’s a great big thank-you to all Brigada sponsors, from the whole Brigada family!!! Recently, we received this note from the director of Gospel Recordings in Singapore: ” I always appreciate receiving Brigada and wonder what happens if it does not exist anymore? It provides me many useful info for networking and resources. Thanks to you and your team for the effort. I am sure many are blessed. D.L.” Well David, thank you for your encouragement and concern. I’m here to put your fears at rest. We’re definitely here to stay… and being galvanized and energized by a host of helpers who have kicked us in gear to get this ministry up and running on-time!!! :-)

  3. THANKS TO STUDIO TEN AND OTHER PARTNERS — Dan, from Studio TEN Ministries wrote today, “We are taking Jesus at his word from Matt. 24:14, recording the Gospel as a “Testimony to Every Nation” beginning with the languages of the unreached in the “closed” nations of S. Asia. We are following up the good news with Church planting among the same people groups, and we operate 2 children’s homes for children who have been rescued from dangerous situations. We want to thank Brigada for keeping us informed for these many years! Bless you as the Father meets every financial need to see this work continue! Your partner in building the Kingdom, Dan.” (Thanks for the $75 sponsorship!) Another Young Life Europe partner sent $100, a church-planter from Spain sent another $100, and two different Wycliffe workers from totally different locations sent in a total of $125. See the other anonymous sponsors at: http://www.brigada.org by clicking on “Sponsor” in the top line menu. And get this: One Brigada participant asked us to set up a “Subscribe” button there… so he could sponsor Brigada for $10 per month!!! Here’s an individual who is a member of Wycliffe Bible translators, who writes, “I have subscribed to Brigada for a number of years and it is still one of my favorite emails to receive, what with all the missions encouragement, information and helpful hints. So I decided to donate $5 a month (the price of a McDonald’s Value Meal) for the cause of the Brigada secretary. I’ll do it via PayPal. If just 250 Brigada subscribers did the same, she (and therefore Doug) would be free to serve you better and still feed their kids an occasional burger too!” So now… that button is there for *anybody* to use! It works via PayPal and one can discontinue whenever. Thanks for the encouragement!

  4. GET YOUR OWN TOLL-FREE NUMBER — Get a US toll free number forwarded to any phone in the world with no setup fee and low international rates. Go to http://www.brigada.org/phone.html (Disclaimer: :-) Thanks to UTW for promising to give a gift to Brigada in the name of each and every new signer at that page!)

  5. CHECK OUT THIS LIST OF RESOURCE LINKS FOR MISSIONS! — Chris (Young Life Europe… a sponsor of Brigada, by the way!) has assembled a *wonderful* page of links for his staff…. and the whole Brigada family. Thanks for sharing with us, Chris! Check out his work at: http://www.brigada.org/articles/web-based_resources.html Those reading this Brigada Today on the web can just click on the link!

  6. WILL THE CHINESE CHURCH COMPLETE THE GREAT COMMISSION? — Here’s a new book, _Back to Jerusalem_, by Paul Hattaway (Author of Operation China). Napoleon once said “When China is moved it will change the face of the globe.” According to the author, today those words are becoming a reality through the powerful spiritual vision of the Chinese church to send 100,000 missionaries across China’s borders to complete the Great Commission, even in this generation! Hear Brother Yun, Peter Xu Yongze, and Enoch Wang — three Chinese house church leaders who between them have spent more than 40 years in prison for their faith — explain the history and present-day reality of the “Back to Jerusalem movement.” Gabriel Resources, the book’s distributor, offers discounts to individuals, missionaries, mission organizations and churches. Email orderatomlitdotomdotorg or call 1-8MORE-BOOKS (1-866-732-6657) toll-free in the USA & Canada or 706-554-1594.

  7. ESL INSTRUCTION — Improve your English listening and conversation skills by attending this three month language immersion course at the YWAM facility in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, USA. The next school is scheduled for April 4 through June 25, 2004. The organizers urge interested parties to apply now, since it takes more time to obtain a visa these days. For more information, see their website at http://www.ywampa.org or e-mail them at ywampaatcomcastdotnet .

  8. SHORT TERM MISSION LEADERS SEMINAR — COMMIT Ministries is offering two, high quality, low-cost, 3-day seminars; one in Tampa Florida in the Winter (February 5-7, 2004), and another in Honolulu Hawaii, April 22-24, 2004. This joint training effort with Gateway Mission Training Center is in its 8th year and continues to offer a comprehensive, cutting-edge, intensive seminar to prepare Christians to lead short term ministry teams worldwide. Each participant will acquire everything necessary to develop or augment a thorough short term ministry program for their respective church or mission agency and gain the skills/knowledge necessary to effectively lead short-term ministry teams. For registration information, contact COMMIT Ministries infoatcommitministriesdotorg or visit their website at http://www.commitministries.org

  9. NEED OUTSTANDING ETHNOGRAPHIC OR ARCHAEOLOGICAL MATERIAL? — Try the Yale “Human Relations Area Files” (“HRAF” at Yale U). These anthropological databases are ideal for research and teaching, especially for those researching either individual societies or conducting cross-cultural studies on particular subjects. And thanks to Jason (Brigada participant in Brazil), who has a contact at Yale named Christiane, we have an October password to try out the database! (Thanks Jason!) Just click to: http://ets.umdl.umich.edu/e/ehrafe eHRAF Archaeology: and type in the username: hraf then password: ho=&epow then press “login” after you type in username and password

For ideas on how to use this info, click on over to: http://www.yale.edu/hraf/teachingehraf.html. There are exercises, group presentations, short student papers, class syllabi, and lab and library assignments. Subject areas currently include general anthropology and archaeology, research and methods, and medical anthropology.

If you want to sign up long-term or need more info. on costs or entry, contact christianedotcunnaratyaledotedu directly.

  10. ORAL BIBLE NETWORK WORKSHOP PLANNED — Mark your calendars for January 20-22, 2004 for the Oral Bible Network Workshop to be held at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas. Details are being shaped, but this is *the* event with tracks being planned for those new to storying and for those familiar with storying. More than one dozen Great Commission Christian organizations are sponsoring this “summit”! Look for updates on http://www.oralbible.com

  11. INNER MONGOLIAN ONLINE BIBLE — After Genesis (1991), the book of Psalms (1995), now the whole New Testament has been translated into Inner Mongolism vertical script as used by almost 6 Million Mongolians and Mongolian people groups in north China. 10,000 copies have been printed in August and an online Internet version is on its way http://www.mongolbible.com The online version is currently being programmed (a bit difficult due to the vertical script) and will hopefully be online before the month is out. Also, a PDF version of the 1156 pages book is in the making. For more details, email to muvatmongolbibledotcom

The work took 14 years and since 1989 the number of Inner Mongolian believers grew considerably. Due to the sensitive location, the MUV team does not publish personal names.

  12. CHECK OUT OUR GUIDELINES FOR EMAILED PRAYER LETTERS — If you send out an emailed newsletter or prayer letter, you’ll want to check out Jonathan Kanner’s new compilation of “lessons learned”, by clicking over to: http://www.brigada.org/articles/e-prayer_letters.html Those reading this newsletter on the web can just click here! Jonathan does a great job of giving a ton of suggestions as to form, style, purpose, tips, and more! What a great service to our whole Brigada community!

  13. RESOURCE TO ENCOURAGE MISSIONARIES — A Bible study guide called, “Finding Strength for the Journey,” provides a tool for member care or personal encouragement. Author Janice Lemke drew from experiences as a missionary when writing this series of thirty studies that explores topics such as perseverance in hardship, dealing with depression, handling conflict, and benefit from trials. For Brigada readers, they’ve discounted the price to $5.00, plus shipping. There’s a bigger discount ($4.00 each) for orders of 20 or more. For more information contact cjlemkeatcsdotcom

  14. TONS OF RESOURCES TO MOBILIZE YOUR LOCAL CHURCH — Thanks loads to Amy, from Southern Indiana, who appealed to Brigada Today participants to share their top resources for church mobilization. She got help from other Brigada participants. The entire resource library is now listed at: http://www.brigada.org/articles/church_mobilization.html If you’re reading this edition of Brigada on the web, just click! (Thanks again Amy!)

  15. MISSIONS SONGS SEARCH — We are hoping to compile songs about missions (old & new) and since no one person can know all the missions related songs out there, we turn to Brigada readers. You know, that song you heard sometime ago and it made you think of either going to missions or just affirmed your calling. We’ve setup a webpage that will keep getting updated as long as submissions are coming in http://www.tentmakernet.com/songlist or send an email to songlistattentmakernetdotcom
