  1. THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS — Thanks tons to our sponsors, because they literally make it possible for us to get this journal out the door and onto your screens. The first, who sent $25, prefers to remain completely anonymous, actually designed the PERL script that helps us automate the preparation of the web version of Brigada Today each week. By sending $25 to help provide for our Brigada secretary — this anonymous volunteer is really going beyond the call of duty! Thanks! Meanwhile, those users making calls via Dial-Abroad made possible a July donation of $133. (Thanks Dial-Abroad!) Another anonymous participant expanded giving by another $30, while yet another donor (the only one we have) used the “subscriber” paypal button to give $10 anonymously.

  2. ONE USER’S OPINION: “HOW CAN WE TRUST FINDNOT?” — Last edition, we suggested an internet service that allows you to create a secure channel between your laptop and a particular server, resulting in an “invisible conduit” safe for surfing sensitive sites. The site, www.findnot.com, is anonymously- owned and managed. As a result, at least one Brigada reader asked how he would know whether or not the site itself is really safe. A second user reminded us to examine local laws aimed at preventing Virtual Private Networks. Either way, be sure to check it out for yourself. We’ve received nothing but good comments about it, but as always, you might decide otherwise.

  3. DOUBLE YOUR EFFECTIVENESS IN RAISING FUNDS — Attend the People Raising Basic Coaches Clinic October 22-23. Move beyond the fear factor and raise more funds in half the time. Implement ten key habits for success. Network with other Christian leaders. Arm yourself with tools needed for effective fund raising. You can’t afford to miss this breakthrough 2-day conference. Register by September 22 and save $50. Ask for the $100 spouse discount. For more information or to register on-line go to http://www.peopleraising.com/conf_bas_oct2004.cfm or e-mail Bill(at)PeopleRaising(dot)com [replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .].

  4. GET YOUR MASTER OF ARTS — Liberty University welcomed it’s first 23 students in the Master of Arts in Communication Studies program. The program is 36 hours, including a thesis or project. Students may specialize in Media & Communication Studies, Organizational & Interpersonal Communication, Religious Communication Studies or Public Address. Speciality courses include Mediastrategy; Audience Analysis and Measurement; Communication and Change. For more information, visit http://www.liberty.edu/Academics/Graduate/index.cfm?PID=6048 or email cvkramer(at)liberty(dot)edu [replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .]
  5. .

  6. BRIGADA PARTICIPANT OFFERS ACCESS TO GOOGLE’S MAIL BETA TEST — Google is beta-testing a mail service called Gmail that includes 1000MB free (1 gig) email storage. For the time you can only join if you are invited by somebody who is already using Gmail. Gmail is owned by Google, so if you want a pretty reliable 1000MB webmail to store any computer files, please contact Joshua at mdawit(at)gmail(dot)com [replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .]

  7. LEARN TO ACCEPT CULTURAL ADJUSTMENTS AND LANGUAGE — Attend “CLASP” in Toronto, October 17-29, 2004. This two week course integrates the elements of COPE and PLANTS programs with a unique approach to culture adjustments through language learning. Exciting simulations, personal interviews, phonetic training, language learning projects and field experience provide preparation for effective intercultural ministry. For Christian workers serving cross-culturally for more than one year. Or take in the PLANTS (PILAT) course separately, also in Toronto, November 14-26, 2004. Based upon the best language learning principles available, this ten day program helps you identify your own personal learning style, understanding your strengths and weakness, overcome fear and inhibitions, as well as design a plan that both fits you and your situation. From the rich resources of Toronto, leaders can arrange for you to actually begin the language learning process on site in your own target language. You will leave equipped with more than enough natural and easily implemented language learning activities, projects, techniques, skills and strategies. For More Information call 905-640- 1621, or write info(at)missionprep(dot)ca [replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .] or register on-line by clicking to: http://www.missionprep.ca

  8. HEALTH INSURANCE RATE INCREASES — Is your organization experiencing health insurance rate increases? If so, be sure to contact Insurance Services of America. They are a Christian organization that specializes in helping individuals and groups find affordable health insurance options. They can put together a “tailor-made” plan to fit your group’s needs. Their group plan allows for takeover of existing claims & conditions and will provide your people with quality medical insurance worldwide – and they won’t charge you more when your people are in the US on furlough! Check out some of their plans online at http://www.missionaryhealth.net , email them at health(at)missionaryhealth(dot)net, or call them at 1-800-647-4589 (1- 480-821-9052 outside of North America) [replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .].

(Thanks to the anonymous user contributing this item!)

  10. LEARN A PRACTICAL SKILL FOR MISSIONS — Simplified dental care can open many doors to evangelism and relationship building among the unreached. No drills, injections, electricity, or sophisticated equipment are involved – only simple hand instruments, a compassionate heart, and two weeks of your time. Now you can bring greatly needed dental care to your community. Courses offered monthly in Texas. http://www.dentaltrainingformissions.com or email dentaltrainingformissions(at)yahoo(dot)com [replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .].

  11. OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES – – Do you have a heart to help the hurting overseas? Do you have professional skills, such as in agriculture, alternate energy, business management or marketing? If so, you may be eligible to be sent as a “team member” of Aquaculture International. The organization is a participant in Volunteers for Prosperity, which was initiated by President Bush. Volunteer assignments will be through various organizations which receive funds from USAID and are usually for two or three weeks with all expenses paid. When going as a team member of Aquaculture International, each volunteer will be encouraged to supervise the construction of a simple, small-scale recirculation fish-vegetable production system at a nearby orphanage or other needy area. Technical support and basic materials will be provided. This will be in preparation for later construction of larger production operations which will provide a constant food supply and create jobs. For more information, email: aquaculturei(at)hotmail(dot)com [replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .]. Web: http://www.aquacultureinternational.org . 1. TRY THESE INDUSTRIAL-USE GOOGLE SEARCH TRICKS AND TIPS! — Are you a Google-search-maniac? Become all the more-so by trying these tips:
*** Put your exact text in quotes and Google will only show you pages where that exact phrase appears
*** To see a list of pages that link to the one you’re examining, type the word “link:” then your URL, like, “link:www.brigada.org”
*** To convert one kind of measure to another, just type in the natural language, like this, “100 degrees F. in C.” or “5 gallons in liters”. Experiment.
*** Watch the “Did you mean” phrase below your search title, in case you misspelled a word ( You type “Brigadaa” and Google returns, “Did you mean brigada?”, and you click on that phrase and Brigada.org is the first listing out of 382,000 pages where the word brigada occurs.)
*** Looking for a phone number? Try typing in “rphonebook:” followed the name, city, and state abbreviation for a great phone listing. Then go throw away your white pages — or recycle them to be friendlier to the environment. :-) Try the same using “bphonebook:” for a business listing.
*** Forget your calculator? Never fear. Just use Google. In the Google prompt, type in your functions like this, “16 + (25 * (15 / 3))” and you’ll see 141 as the Google-given result. So… how will Casio stay in business?? :-)
*** Searching for a particular story for which you know the title? Use the “intitle:” tool. Type “intitle:” followed by the title in quotes. Try, intitle:”Make digital videos worth watching” to see copies of the article we mention in Item 9 below.
*** Get a great listing of all the Google tools and services at: http://www.google.com/options/index.html which include indexed paper catalogs, product listings from online stores, shopping tools, and even indices of millions of messages on Usenet discussion groups.

  2. NEED A VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK AT YOUR MINISTRY? TRY THIS ONE — Just click on over to http://www.findnot.com Yes, it’ll cost a little bit (less than your Internet Service Provider charges), but then the I.T. guy at your office won’t have to set up and maintain a flawless VPN for your ministry and you’ll enjoy completely anonymous messages and web-searching regardless of where you live on the planet. So… live in a land that suppresses information about Christianity, yet log onto “findnot” then use your newly-encrypted channel to order Bibles and have them shipped to a friend in the land next-door, then go pick them up the following week. Send and receive email without encryption and without worry that someone is “sniffing” your connection. (But, as always, remember to encrypt your local hard drive in case your laptop is seized. We highly recommended IBM Thinkpads because of built-in IBM Client Services encryption.) Check ’em out — and no, we don’t get any kind of “kickback”. Just one beggar telling another where to find bread. (Thanks to our friend in N. Africa for referring us to this service. Believe me, he’ll prefer we leave him unnamed, but he’ll read this via his “findnot” VPN connection :-) .)

  3. ONE-DAY COURSE ON ISLAM — Crescent Project’s Sharing the Hope seminars provide a one-day introduction to Islam, Muslim cultures, and ministry skills designed to provide accurate information about Muslims and equip Christians with biblical attitudes and methods for evangelism so they can confidently and sensitively share their faith with Muslim friends. Upcoming seminars include Owosso MI on Sept. 11, 2004, Muncie IN on Sept. 25, 2004, Portland OR on Oct. 9, 2004 and McAllen TX on Oct. 23, 2004. For more information go to http://www.crescentproject.org/sharingthehope.cfm

  4. GLOBAL (“GO”) OPPORTUNITIES FOR TENTMAKERS TURNS 20! — To celebrate their anniversary, they have lined up more training events this fall than ever before. Do you want to investigate tentmaking? Thinking of going as a tentmaker but need more training and encouragement? Let “GO” help you get equipped at their Light to the Nations tentmaker training course 13-17 October at the US Center for World Mission Pasadena CA, or at a half day seminar in Victoria BC, Toronto ON & Delta BC (close to the WA border). According to a recent survey, a large percentage of today’s tentmakers lack ministry skills. Don’t become a part of that statistic. For more info and to register for any of these events visit their website http://www.globalopps.org or email them at training(at)globalopps(dot)org [replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .]

  5. INTERNET SERVICE WITH BUILT-IN VIRUS, SPAM, AND FILTERING — Check out American Family Online, http://www.afo.net/ or call 888-817-9314 or 850-897-8200 if interested in getting an internet service which filters for viruses, spam, and indecency. The filtering is done *before* it gets to you so that you do not need spam and porno blockers on your computer (an antivirus system on your computer is still necessary). Finding a local call-up number should be no problem. The cost is around $20, slightly cheaper than AOL and other standard services. According to one Brigada participant, “David”, the service performs well and tech support is good.

  6. SEPTEMBER IS “PRAY FOR THE PHILIPPINES” MONTH -– Sponsored by the missionaries of the International Mission Board’s Pacific Rim Region, the goal is to facilitate fervent prayer from Christians around the world on behalf of Filipinos. The ardent desire is that these prayers will result in a massive outpouring of God’s Spirit upon these great people. Pray that many Filipinos will come to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, commit themselves to Bible study and discipleship and carry the Gospel message throughout the Philippines, Asia and around the world. Request more information by contacting Judy Harvey pray4philippines(at)imb(dot)org(dot)ph or Ann Lovell at annlovell1965(at)yahoo(dot)com (Ann can mail you materials for your church within the USA). Christian Light Foundation also has some specific prayer requests they would like to share with you: clfphils(at)pldtdsl(dot)net [replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .]

  7. IF YOU HAD TROUBLE FINDING DEPT. OF STATE ENGLISH INFO — In last week’s Brigada Today, if you had trouble finding information on the Dept. of State’s “English Language Officer” program, try: http://www.careers.state.gov/specialist/jobs/print/ad_elo.html (The extra “L” on the end of HTML makes a big difference. :-) Sorry for passing through that incorrect link without checking it first. We sometimes compose “on the road” and don’t always get to check links. Like today I’m composing in the back of a truck, out of touch with the Internet. :-( Fortunately, when we include an error, we hear plenty about it from dedicated readers! :-) So we’ll always pass along these corrections in the next issue.)

  8. GET YOUR US TOLL-FREE NUMBER FORWARDED TO ANY PHONE IN THE WORLD — Get a US toll free number forwarded to any phone in the world with no setup fee and low international rates. Go to http://www.brigada.org/phone.html (Disclaimer: This service then sponsors Brigada as a thank-you for being featured here — but they’re good enough to feature anyway. :-) )

  9. MAKE GREAT DIGITAL VIDEOS — This article on making great digital videos can help you take your movies to the next level: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1206386,00.asp (Copy the above URL to your browser’s “Address:” box.)

  10. FOUR MONTHS TO GO, $12 THOUSAND TO RAISE — As you know, Brigada is a free service. But last year, after running behind for months, we launched out in faith to hire a Brigada Secretary. Within *weeks* we were totally caught-up and have remained so ever since. Now, we have just four months remaining in 2004 to raise the balance of her salary for the year. Certainly it’s exciting that nearly $4000 has come in so far… but with only 4 months remaining, we’re wondering if there might possibly be 48 churches out there that could each manage a special one- time gift of $250 to help us over the hump? If so, we’ll be done and we won’t request a dime more throughout the remainder of the year. What do you think? Would your church consider? Would you be willing to ask them? If the Lord blesses you with a “yes” answer, just log on to: http://www.brigada.org then click “sponsor” in the top menu, or just send a check payable to Team Expansion to: Team Expansion (Brigada secretary), 13711 Willow Reed Dr., Louisville, KY 40299. Thanks! As always, be sure to let us know if you’d like us to promote any particular service or ministry, or if you’d prefer your gift by anonymous. And thank you for helping us get Brigada out the door and onto your screen each week!

  7. HELP I.D. PERSONS OF PEACE — There is a significant gap in the literature on how to find “people of peace.” (Luke 10) What is your experience locating people of peace? Peaceman has agreed to compile the results, which we hope to compile and get back to Brigada Today by November. Express your thoughts to the strategies that seem to work, and provide an opportunity for us all to learn. Write peaceit(at)xs4all(dot)nl who will compile a collection for us. [replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .] Thanks!

  1. WE APPRECIATE SPONSORS AND PARTNERS! — “I love Brigada. It has helped me connect many times. Thanks so much, All for Him,” from an Anonymous Brigada participant in Alabama, USA. Thanks for the encouraging words *and* the $50 gift to help us underwrite the cost of a Brigada-sponsored secretary! Read more of this donor’s testimony about Brigada by reading this issue on the web and clicking here. ” I really appreciate your site. I find it very useful and have used your links quite a bit,” from missionaries in SW Alaska, who sent $25 toward our secretary here. Thanks! Another great friend added another $25 and here’s a great note from a worker in South Africa in regard to our item on software for the MAC. You’ll recall the free program we mentioned and the way it performed pretty much the same function as the $4400 alternative. “Bob” wrote, “HUGE GRIN. Thanks, Doug — I (and my Mac PowerBook) enjoyed the chuckle and will enjoy the $4,400.00 savings.” Hope Bob and all our Brigada participants can enjoy that and more in future issues of Brigada Today! Want to join the above donors in making possible a real secretary for Brigada? Just use some of the money you saved on one of our items! :-) Go here to give via PayPal or credit card, or just send a check payable to Team Expansion to: Team Expansion (Brigada secretary), 13711 Willow Reed Dr., Louisville, KY 40299. Thanks! As always, be sure to let us know if you’d like us to promote any particular service or ministry, or if you’d prefer your gift by anonymous. Remember, your gifts and sponsorships are the only way we can pay our Brigada-sponsored secretary. Also, remember that once we reach our goal for the year, we’ll no longer seek partnership gifts or donations. So if you’d love to get rid of these ads at the beginning of each issue, give generously and enjoy the rest of 2004 ad-free! :-) By the way, we still have a ways to go. So far, our friends have given $3,818.20 and somewhere we have to find $16,140 for our secretary’s salary. Can you help us reach that goal in the next 4 1/2 months?

  2. GREAT NEW EXCEL SUMMARY OF MISSIONS CONFERENCES, BOOKS, ETC. — Catch Chip’s new summary of the latest and greatest websites, books, resources, and conferences you need to attend in order to stay up on missions. Thanks to Karen, his secretary, for the great job she did organizing the material. Get it by right-clicking here, then choose “Save target as…” and save the file on your hard drive. It’s a virus-free Excel spreadsheet with several worksheet tabs at the bottom. Thanks again Chip – and thanks to all who responded to him! That’s the magic of Brigada!

  4. WHY DO FEW MISSIONS USE THE WEB FOR OUTREACH? — Although almost every mission agency has a website, these are usually publicity pages aimed at the respective Christian constituency and potential supporters. Very few actually use the Web for outright evangelism. This article analyzes possible reasons for this strange situation, and suggests a way forward: http://www.gospelcom.net/guide/resources/mission-agencies.php

And to advocate the Web as a good medium for evangelism, there is a free 1300-word article available for reprint in print media, or to syndicate into any website by Javascript insert.

    http://www.gospelcom.net/guide/resources/outreach.php

  5. HORT FILM AWARDS FOR DIGITAL EVANGELISM CLIPS — If you enjoy producing digital movies, then there is a new opportunity for you. Submissions for the 2005 Short Film Awards have begun. Send your digital film (up to 3 minutes) in one of four categories: Plan of Salvation, Faith, Hope or Love. Multiple entries are welcome. Numerous great prizes, and finalists will be voted upon by visitors to the site. There is no cost; entry fees are covered by a sponsorship by eMediaLINK. Deadline for submission is December 1, 2004, so don’t delay. Get more information:

    http://www.lifeway.com/emedialink

  6. DONOR TRACKING SOFTWARE — Why do donor tracking software packages cost thousands of dollars? We don’t know either! CMS, Contribution Management System is reasonably priced and support won’t break the bank. Features include: track donations, keep an unlimited number of list designations, utilize CASS Certification information, profit from flexible reports, export data and make your own reports. We look to the users of our software for ideas to improve the software. How important is it to have software do what you need it to do and at a reasonable price? For more information visit our web site:

or email JWood(at)techteam(dot)org. [replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .] The web page has additional contact information.

  7. CROSS AND CRESCENT CONFERENCE — This conference is held throughout the world and is taught by leading scholars from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. The purpose of the conference is to train Christians to understand Islam, relate to their Muslim neighbors, and share the Gospel biblically and contextually with them. It will be held at College Church (Wheaton, IL) in Commons Hall on Friday, October 8, from 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, October 9, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. To receive a brochure and registration information, go to

20040801 Brigada Today

  1. OUT OF THE GOODNESS OF THEIR HEART… — Two more sponsors helped this past week: Greg Fritz, Director of Caleb Project, sent $50 of his own personal funds, adding thanks for the mobilization ministry of Brigada. To learn more about Caleb Project and the multitude of resources they make available to churches worldwide, visit them at: http://www.calebproject.org By the way, I recently ordered a set of videos from them. They shipped out the same day, the tape arrived exactly as promised, and I looked very efficient to the church where I was guest speaker. :-) Caleb Project will keep their word.

Thanks, too, to the anonymous donor who sent $10 again this month. He’s been faithfully sending $10/month for some 9 months now! Want to join these donors in making possible a real secretary for Brigada? Just log on to: http://www.brigada.org then click “sponsor” in the top menu, or just send a check payable to Team Expansion to: Team Expansion (Brigada secretary), 13711 Willow Reed Dr., Louisville, KY 40299. :-)

  5. A NEW QUESTION: THE NAMA/DAMARA PEOPLE of NAMIBIA — In the desert town of Warm Bad (pronounced “Var-um Bot”), which means “hot springs,” the Water of Eternal Life is now flowing. Two families found salvation through Jesus. When asked, none could explain what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus. It was a question they had never heard before. Each family member was asked at different times and places, yet the answers were the same. None of them knew the true gospel. They were all grateful for finding their spiritual thirst forever satisfied in Jesus. Pray for the Lord to build prayer support for the Nama/Damara, an unengaged people. To adopt the Nama/Damara people for prayer or for more information, please visit http://www.forgottenpeoples.info or email swacsc(at)iafrica(dot)com [replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .]

  10. QUALITY PUBLISHING FOR OBSCURE SCRIPTS/LANGUAGES — Okay, so here’s one of those hard-to-publish items about MAC computers, so I’ve pushed it way down here at the bottom so that only the faithful few will see it. (Joking! :-) ) Truth is, it’s a pretty good deal. :-) Jonathan Kew of the Summer Institute of Linguistics has released XeTeX (pronounced: zeetek), a powerful Unicode-enabled desktop publishing tool that produces quality PDF output for (theoretically) any language/script in the world. Use it on Macintosh with complex fonts like Arabic, Hebraic, Indic, etc. And get this: XeTeX is free! http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&item_id=xetex or email nrsi(at)sil(dot)org [replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .]

Users prejudiced against Macintoshes have a second option: UltraXML on Microsoft Windows that displays complex scripts via OpenType fonts. It costs 2,400 British Pounds (about US$4,400) per license: http://www.webxsystems.com/UltraXML.htm or email sales(at)webxsystems(dot)com [replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .]. (Instead, why not buy some Macs with the money saved by getting XeTeX?? :-) )
