    Momentum Magazine is edited by Justin Long. I really like the direction Justin is going with his work. To me, he has taken statistics to a new level. Somehow he has transformed mere numbers and math into feelings and people. There are hundreds of little paragraphs I want to memorize or shout from a mountain top or a church pulpit. In short, his work is inspirational, if not sometimes a bit depressing. Sometimes it takes a bit of depression to get us off square one… or square zero. So … in summary, I say bravo to Justin and his efforts to make Momentum Magazine into a rallying cry for masses of new world Christians and the new wave of missionaries they will send. Momentum Magazine is one of the few bright spots in missions mobilization today. It should be required reading for every Brigada subscriber. Do I agree with all his theology? Nope. But do I agree with his ache for the world’s least reached? But of course. And so will you.


  2. GET INFO ON UNREACHED PEOPLE GROUPS *TODAY* — In April 2006, the North American Mission Board and the International Mission Board released the pilot version of the North American People Groups Database project,

    at the Ethnic America Summit in Atlanta. The website contains 2000 Census data for language spoken at home, country of birth, and ancestry by city, county, and zip code. Additionally, local pilot research in the Atlanta area provided over 30 people groups in the Chinese, Arab, and Mexican communities alone. Many other functionalities exist on the website as well, including: an online discussion forum for North American people group workers, a resource request form, and a toolbox for those wishing to begin people group research in their area. The website is still in the pilot phase but improvements will be made in the months ahead. Get registered today to benefit from all this online database has to offer!


  3. THE EVANGELICAL TRAINING DATABASE –-

    Training organizations that are members of an evangelical alliance or similar association can now register their courses on the international Evangelical Training Database. This is free and courses are then searchable world-wide through English and Spanish interfaces. The Missionary Training Service, sponsor of the project, is liaising with member bodies of the International Commission for Evangelical Theological Education (ICETE) and the Trainers of Pastors International Coalition (TOPIC) and similar associations. They hope it will become a world-wide resource for anyone needing training. Geoff Tunnicliffe, leader of the World Evangelical Alliance kindly said, “We certainly want to find ways of seamlessly integrating this into our WEA web presence”. Dr Chris Wright, Director of the Langham Partnership International (John Stott Ministries), and chairman of the Lausanne Theology Working Group, is also supporting the project. Translations into other languages are being planned.

  9. THE ZHUANG OF SOUTHERN CHINA — October 1st will begin a month long prayer emphasis for the over 17 million unreached Zhuang of Southern China. They are the largest people group in the world without a Bible in their own language. Each month on the first is a time of prayer and fasting on behalf of Zhuang, but in the month of October each year there is a special emphasis. There is a full color prayer guide “31 Days for the Zhuang” available in several languages.   13. THE BACKPAGE: IS EVERYBODY THIS BUSY? — Recently, I had to jot down some of my roles for a brief introduction I was writing and, frankly, it was kind of startling. Is everybody attempting to pull off this kind of schedule? (May I just think out loud here for a sec’?) Maybe it’s a symptom of being too interested in lots of different investments of time. I’m a husband to a great wife and a dad to two incredible sons, a son to my aging mother, an elder in my local church, where I play piano and keyboard with the worship team while serving as Chairman of the Missions Committee. I enjoy trying to stay fairly in tune with developments in technology, communications, computing, photography, and a dozen other interests.

    In addition, I’m a high school varsity boys soccer coach for a large Christian school nearby. So I invest about 3 hours, 5 nights a week in these 18 boys (and their respective families). By the way, just for fun, you can see their progress this coming season at:

    I’m *soooo* close to being done with my Ph.D. dissertation. Just a couple of chapters, actually. But alas, so much of that has gone on hold with Emerald Hills.

    And then there’s Brigada. Eventually, I always manage to catch up… one issue a week for 11 years. Yikes. :-) Brigada participants are so patient, too. Sometimes I get 3 weeks behind . . . yet the kind words and encouraging testimonies give me hope that somewhere, somehow, this information is helpful to someone.

    On top of all that, I’m interested in people’s lives. So last night I drove 40 minutes to go hear one of our workers do a presentation on Afghanistan at a local church camp. Today I’ll drive 30 minutes to pray with the wife of one of our trainers before her surgery. This weekend I’ll drive 5 hours to speak in a local church that’s helping our ministry.

    Are we busy yet? :-)

    So this morning I was just thinking… Is this just my own life… or is this happening to everyone? It’s not that I’m unhappy or feel stressed. The truth is… I’m having a blast in life. I’m happy and eventually, I usually catch up on enough sleep to get by. So why am I writing about this? I guess I’m just wanting to make sure we all examine our respective lives… that we take our pulse to be sure that we still care very deeply about unreached peoples. That we’ll still live our lives, even with all these different involvements, in such a way that they’ll hear the message. That we’ll still dedicate ourselves to trying to reach them. That we still won’t quit ’til they’ve had a chance to hear.

    Are we good on all that?

  1. GOOGLE FROM YOUR CELL PHONE OR PDA — Lately I’ve been trying out Google’s SMS service. It works through text messaging from your cell phone. First things first — make sure you won’t be charged per SMS. (Many accounts now have unlimited SMSes.) Then just send whatever query you would have typed in at Google.com — only text message it to this number: 46645. Your results will come back momentarily.   2. CHECK OUT YOUR PRIORITIES — I know you’ve probably tried out the Steven Covey stuff before, but every once and awhile, I find that it’s helpful to review it. Now, they have so many helps online, it’s pretty much a new day for their stuff anyway. Start at… http://www.FranklinCovey.com then download the application (try it out for free for a month). Then walk through the library… http://www.franklincovey.com/fc/library_and_resources Get in the habit of using the application so you’ll be forced to think in terms of “mission”, roles, and goals again. After the 30 days, figure out your own system again using whatever tools you wish, but with renewed appreciation for the “top-down” planning approach.

  3. 24 MISSIONS LESSONS FOR CHILDREN — Backpack Missions is an easy, exciting, and effective strategy for teaching Great Commission principles to children in any church.   6. REPORT ON DONOR MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE — Wondering which donor management software packages came to light in our recent survey? John, at The Mission Station, wrote, “There were a total of 15 respondents. Some use(d) more than one package. No one package had more than two users. There were a total of 5 respondents using HomeGrown packages (including MS Access/Excel) on both DOS and Windows platforms. The package currently in use with 2 users was TntMPD for Windows. The packages that had a single user were Logos, Fundraiser Software, Donor Manager, DonorQuest, NewViews, Church Missions, Blackbaud’s Raisers Edge, Quick Books – Non-Profit, and Quick Books – Standard. All the single packages also ran on Windows platforms of some form.

    There were 4 respondents who indicated that they were presently evaluating Quick Books – Non-Proft, but had not come to any conclusions yet. Overall, the homegrown applications were not well viewed, yet had some customized features that were missed with other “out-of-the-box” packages. The applications that received favorable recommendations were Fundraiser Software, Donor Manager, DonorQuest, ChurchMissions, Raisers Edge, and TntMPD. Finally, the cost of these packages ranges from FREE to over $3000.00 USD.” John will make sure all of these are incorporated into his Missions Database for all to access at: http://www.missionaries.org

  9. VOICE OVER IP STILL A GOOD DEAL — For those willing to experiment with Voice Over IP, Oliver says the frontier is still a good deal. He’s been exploring it for almost a year… He concludes that free calls are more limited now — about 300 min/week and the 10 free EUR are valid for 120 days. He suggests using them on destinations which aren’t free. He also advises that the country lists change without notice, so beware. DETERMINED TO EVANGELIZE TO STUDENTS — The Student Christian Organisation (A Malawian locally based interdenominational organisation – SCOM) has seen a tremendous membership growth over the years.   13. IDENTIFY THE SPECTRUM, THEN CHOOSE YOUR SPREAD — Have you noticed how broad the spectrum is getting when it comes to local churches and missions outreach? For missionaries, the landscape has gotten pretty complex lately. Some churches have gotten to the point that they no longer will support “independent” (individual) missionaries. They want all their missionaries to be affiliated with an organization that will help them stay on task and accountable, financially and otherwise. Meanwhile, there are still other churches who almost resent the role of an agency. (They are, in effect, gradually becoming their own agency.) In between is a complex continuum of all the blended mixtures.

    So what’s a missionary to do? Well for what it’s worth, here’s my take: First, when approaching any new situation, you have to use the same principles that you were taught to use when you crossed into another culture. Second, my own opinion is — it’s not our role to try to *change* the church to fit our own opinions (in the same manner that it wasn’t our role to change the culture to fit our expectations). The key is to have a relevant message . . . a relevant *mode* for each context. Once you become irrelevant, you’ve lost touch with that portion of the spectrum. (So get relevant.)

    Next week, we’ll address the spectrum faced by Brigada participants working in local churches. Shew. They face a jungle too. We all do. So be careful out there.

TRAINING IN CHRISTIAN MICROENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT & MICROFINANCE — The Chalmers Center for Economic and Community Development will conduct its next Christian Economic Development Institute (CEDI) on July 31 – August 5, 2006 at the Jumuia Conference and Country Home in Limuru, Kenya, located outside of Nairobi. This training institute is sponsored by the Anglican Church of Kenya along with Five Talents International.   1. THE BACKPAGE: HOW TO APPROACH A PEER (OR NOT) — Last week we talked about the concept of approaching “the head man” in a tribe . . . or a company. Our basic premise was: go to the person in charge. But what if you have an issue with someone who is your peer… someone “across departmental lines” or someone in the team across town. You feel funny going to his/her team leader or boss because you’re afraid you’ll get him/her in trouble, right? Good answer. What’s more, the boss might not know you or accommodate your desire to discuss the matter. He or she might think you’re stepping out of line to bring up something that had nothing to do with your work area.So what if you observe shoddy or less-than-best performance on the part of the guy across the hall, who serves under a different boss? My own take is — it depends. If the team member has a reasonable team leader (one who is reasonably gifted in leadership), sometimes it might make more sense for you to report the troubling behavior or less-than-best performance. Speak directly to the person’s overseer. However, if the team member’s point-man is seemingly less understanding… or if you’ve had a hard time getting your point across to him or her (sometime before), then there are times where you’ll feel uncomfortable going to the team leader of the friend. In cases like these (where the team leader isn’t as present), you might decide to throw out the “head man” rule and approach the struggling brother or sister directly. Here are some important and easy tips to maximize your chance of success:

    *** Focus on one thing at a time, in a positive way, if possible: Refuse the temptation to bring up a laundry list. For example, if the I.T. guy can’t train, can’t program, can’t write instructions, and can’t show up to work on time, and, to make matters worse, if his boss is unreasonable as well, yes you might have to approach him directly, as a peer. But don’t make a list… or at least, don’t *show* him the list. Just decide on the highest priority item and approach him on that item first. In the previous case, maybe you begin by pulling him aside and asking him to help you understand a particular protocol or command. In the process, you coax him to train you in a friendlier fashion, then you tell him, “It really helped me when you described the solution in such-and-such a terms.” Make sure the guy knows you *appreciate* what he just did (the helpful training behavior). Truth be known, you’re mentoring him… but it’s perhaps team-member-specific-mentoring, in that he’ll probably interpert it as being the kind of behavior he ought to show *you* and you alone. That’ll be ok at first. At least it’ll help you do your job better.

    *** Go one-on-one: Trust us… If you go as a group, it’ll feel more embarrassing, more overwhelming, and bigger than life. Go one-on-one.

    *** Uplift the positive: Whenever possible, try to “catch her in the act of being good” rather than criticizing her errant behavior.

    *** Try to establish a relationship first, *then* correct: It’s a *ton* easier to take correction from a *friend* rather than someone at a distance. What’s more, we’ll *care* more when a friend gives us feedback. We seem to always be able to rationalize or justify when it’s someone about whom we have little invested interest.

    *** Whenever possible, use metaphors if appropriate: For some reason, people remember stories better. So if you can say it with an illustration, without it becoming hokey, do it.

    Using these 5 simple approaches, perhaps you can turn a lemon into lemonade: The person with troubling behavior just might become a close friend, believe it or not. And friends are good, … because it’s truly a jungle out there!

TRAINING IN CHRISTIAN MICROENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT & MICROFINANCE — The Chalmers Center for Economic and Community Development will conduct its next Christian Economic Development Institute (CEDI) on July 31 – August 5, 2006 at the Jumuia Conference and Country Home in Limuru, Kenya, located outside of Nairobi. THE BACKPAGE: SPEAK TO THE HEAD MAN — Most of us have watched enough missionary movies to know the importance of checking in with the “head man” in a village, prior to trying to start any work there. The same principle applies in our daily jobs. And the funny thing is — in a weird sort of way — I believe it applies in both directions across the organizational chart. See if you agree.

    I serve as the president of an agency with just over 300 full-time missionary workers. It’s set up in such a way that I coach just 4 workers (heads of departments). They, in turn, lead sub-team leaders in their respective divisions. If a sub-team *member* on one of those sub- teams comes directly to me with an issue… say… regarding a sub-team leader, I have a choice: I can a) try to fix it by going to the department head that I coach, b) try to fix it by going directly to the sub-team leader, or c) briefly mentor the sub-team member on how to fix it solo. The correct answer? You probably already guessed: I believe it is “c”. I have to apply the “go to the head man” rule — in reverse. I have to mentor that worker on the importance of going one-on-one with the sub-team leader to work out the issue. Then I let the process take its course and trust the respective leader to work it out.

    Imagine… if I go to the department head (the one that I coach), he first of all feels a bit embarrassed and ashamed that I became involved in an issue in his department — one of which he probably wasn’t even aware. But what’s worse, he now has to go to his sub-team leader and explain that this issue came to the president’s desk. He has to ask all about it . . . and the wild thing is… maybe the sub-team leader didn’t even *know* about it. So now the sub-team leader is mad at the sub-team member and all this is in *addition* to the original presenting issue. By this time, perhaps the *process* has become bigger than the original issue. By now the problem is bigger than life because people have emailed and met and phoned and… well you get the picture.

    So I’m convinced, after having made more than my share of errors on this part of the game plan… I have to say to the sub-team member, “Have you discussed this issue with your sub-team leader?” If the answer is, “Well … no.,” then my answer has to be, “Well trust me — that’s where this needs to start. If, after sharing it with your sub- team leader, you feel you can’t work it out, then explain to your sub- team leader that you’d love a chance to talk it through with your department’s head, with the sub-team leader present. If you still can’t resolve things, ask them if we can all meet — the four of us. Until you’ve taken those steps, trust me … you don’t want me to barge in like gangbusters to try to fix this.” Does this process sound familiar? I have found that it functions equally as well in the workplace as it does in Matthew 18:15-17. True — the passage deals with sin. But in everyday management and problem-solving, I have found it to function well in teams. Next week… what to do if the problem is with someone in a different department or team.
