12) The BackPage: Searching with “Bing” (or Why We Like Underdogs)

January 24th, 2010 · 2 Comments

Think about it: Did you ever think Microsoft would be behind in anything? But they are — and have been for some time — behind in the area of search engines. Could Bing be the bullet that zings Bill’s guys to the head of the search-engine pack? Before you answer, try it:

It’s fast. It seems equally effective. And some say it will save you as much as 30% of the time used by other search engines (because it takes, on average, 30% fewer letters to type its name into the box than certain other engines). :-) No but seriously… try it and see what you think. Yes, it’s from Microsoft, but like I say — when it comes to search engines, they’re coming from behind. So you’ll be helping out the Underdog. Why do we like Underdogs, anyway? Do we somehow think that if a particular company gets a leg up on everyone else, it will upset the balance of power?

Either way, the pictures are cool. :-) And sometimes with searches, that’s all that matters.

I’ve been using Bing for a while and I agree, the pictures are very nice. It does seem to have an edge when it comes to image searches. When it comes to searching for something where you’ll have to do a lot of ‘refining’, clusty.com is still one of the best because it sorts the results in categories, which helps to speed up the process of filtering and finding what you are really after.

I’ll have to try that search engine Andre. Thanks.
