1) Short-Term Health Insurance Coverage in the USA

Are you having a hard time finding affordable health insurance here in the US? Have you recently become unemployed? Have you just recently returned to the US from overseas and without insurance?

If so, be sure to contact Insurance Services of America and ask for their short-term major medical plan. ISA is a Christian organization that specializes in helping individuals and groups find affordable health insurance options.  In the past you have seen listings on Brigada for their fantastic international plans – now they can help you while you are inside the US as well!

For complete details, rates and to apply for coverage online go to

or email them at

or call them at 1-800-647-4589 (1-480-821-9052 outside of North America) and ask for Mark.  Not only will you be able to get affordable short-term medical coverage, but ISA has agreed to help support Brigada from sales that are made on this link.

2) Take a Serious Look at Biola’s TESOL Certificate & Coursework —

Have you been considering teaching English as a second language? If so, take a serious look at the certificate offered by Biola. Learn more at

We believe you’ll find it to be one of the most comprehensive on the planet and, what’s more, it’s taught by instructors who have significant experience in applying TESOL in the very places where you’ll be teaching. What’s more, they offer online coursework as well. Plan on studying about 10 hours per week in an online community (cohort) of like-minded classmates. For example, you can complete an entire Masters Degree in 3-5 years, all while remaining in your current location of service.

3) Online Introduction to Missions Course -–

Kingdom Expansion 101 is a convenient and inexpensive six-week online course about world evangelization. This fresh and comprehensive class provides an overview of global outreach and how churches and individuals are involved in the Great Commission. Missions team members, short-termers and church leaders have commented on the quality of the variety of articles, videos, PowerPoint presentations, and interaction among the participants. The next class begins July 14. For more information see

and feel free to write to

with specific questions. Several agencies offer the course to their constituents. To learn how your mission organization can do this, write to the email address noted above.

4) Great Deal on Animal Health Care Books —

Christian Veterinary Mission (CVM) has a vision to share Christ’s love through veterinary medicine.  Because many of today’s unreached people are livestock-based societies, CVM has developed a series of books for farmers in the  third world on raising healthy cattle, fish, horses, pigs, poultry, rabbits, goats, bees and sheep.  Goats, pigs, poultry and rabbits are available in Spanish and poultry is available in French. The books are user friendly, easy to understand and many have found them useful in improving animal care.  They can be a good resource for outreach and building relationships.  In addition, “Where There is No Animal Doctor” is an outstanding book and covers health care for a wide variety of species. Overseas missionaries will find this a useful reference on the field. Travelers and short term teams can take them as gifts. Churches can use them in outreach activities.  Brigada readers can get one free book with each similarly priced book purchased by emailing their order to

vetbooksatcvmusadotorg and mentioning Brigada in the email. Learn more about CVM at

and see the books for sale at

5) Best Free Software to Resize Your Digital Pictures —

Here it is, quite possibly the best free software to resize your digital pictures, for example, to web-appropriate size. Let’s face it: Maybe 80% of the public are getting this wrong. Cameras keep offering more and more megapixels because the public has come to equate higher megapixel counts with higher quality (not always the case, by the way). So we now regularly snap pictures 4 megabytes and larger, even when we intend to use them on a website for which, truth be told, they would load much more quickly if they were 80k or less in size. So here’s the solution: Image Resizer:

Mac users will want to try DroPic:

Get started today, resizing your photos to produce snappier online experiences (100kb per image max).

8) We’re Thankful for your Partnership —

Here’s a couple from IL willing to invest $100 in Brigada’s future on behalf of the nations. Thank you!

In addition, Kingdom Expansion 101 sent a $25 thank-you gift for featuring their class in this issue of Brigada Today. Shikarpur Christian Hospital sent a thank-you gift of $100 because we mentioned their ministry opportunity in the May 9th edition of Brigada:

And Christian Veterinary Mission sent a $50 gift as a thank-you and “in appreciation for your great services to the mission field.” God bless you!

9) Want to help fuel the fire? —

Want to empower Brigada to provide mission resources and options for concerned Christians all over the globe? Just click on one of the “Donor” links at the top of this page. Both are safe, the one with PayPal and the other with Authorize.net. Neither requires you to open an account with anyone … and neither ever spams you. We can even set up a regular once-a-month automatic withdraw from your checking account or major credit card. Set it up once and rest easily, knowing that you’re regularly helping get Brigada on the way to the nations. Or, if you prefer, just send an old-fashioned check payable to Team Expansion to: Team Expansion (Brigada), 13711 Willow Reed Dr., Louisville, KY 40299. (Team Expansion is a 501(c)3 incorporation so for USA citizens, your checks made out to Team Expansion are tax-deductible.) A gift of any size would help, whether monthly or one-time. If you know someone else who might like to help, just hit reply and tell us about him/her/them. Thank you for your help in fueling the fire of Brigada!

10) The BackPage: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen —

It was December, 1941. Shocked by the attack on Pearl Harbor, the 12,000 residents of North Platte, Nebraska asked what they could do. Because they were located on a major railroad line, they took simple steps first: They began encouraging soldiers on the trains being shipped to various bases throughout the USA. Sometimes as many as 20 trains per day stopped briefly for refueling. Volunteers from North Platte were always ready. Many of the soldiers were teenagers who were lonely, hungry and tired. Many had never been away from home before. During those 10-minute refueling stops, volunteers would fill their hands with chicken-and-egg-salad sandwiches, coffee, and free magazines. Locals literally would stay up all night making thousands of sandwiches, which would all disappear the next day. They built relationships, passed out popcorn balls, handed out meals, and lots of smiles — to as many as 7,000 – 8,000 per *day*.

Today, some 70 years later, missionaries around the world are in no way involved with guns and ammo, but they are nevertheless fighting a war… a spiritual war (Eph. 6:12). I’m convinced we all need to band together in whatever ways we can to provide refueling, retooling, and recasting of their vision. Just as North Platte made a difference to some 6 million soldiers in the early forties, we need to encourage and equip global witnesses of today. Got an example of how your church or agency is seeking to emulate the North Platte Canteen? Use the “Comment” box at the end of this BackPage editorial. Or, if you prefer, send in an item to Brigada for a future edition. And, in the meantime, keep up the good work!

Note: Author Bob Greene’s little book, “Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen” became somewhat famous after radio personality Bob Edwards profiled the story in a June 6th, 2002 broadcast on National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition.” You can still go back in time and hear it by logging on at…
