1) Join us in Praying for Dalat International School

International School This past week, we received a $93 gift from a Brigada partner with a heart for Dalat International School, which was founded in 1929 as a private Christian boarding school to provide a North American elementary and high school education for children of C&MA missionaries in Indo-China. It is presently located in Penang, Malaysia and is a very special place. Ask any teacher what makes Dalat special and they will say it is the students. Ask any student what makes Dalat special and they will say it is the friends that they make and the fun they have with them. Ask any parent what makes Dalat special and they will say it provides a quality education in a safe environment. Positive togetherness, moments of camaraderie and satisfying relationships are the hallmarks of a Dalat education. They have a few employment opportunities available at

Please pray for Dalat as it serves both to support missionary efforts in Southeast Asia as well as to reach out to the many unreached in Penang. (…and thanks to the true fan of Brigada for the gift!)

3) Build Your Own Free Website with Wix.com

wixOne Brigada reader gave this testimony: “Have you heard of wix.com?!?!?! It’s genius! Better than any other site I have used (to build a collaborative online presence for a non-profit) and it’s totally free. I cancelled my Nationbuilder account for it. They claim to advertise on your site, but all that appears is a fancy icon in the upper right, which actually looks nice.” Check out the options at Wix. You might find it’s all you need for your church or mission outreach. And you certainly won’t be able to complain about the price. (Thanks Caleb!)

4) Nice to have MissionMakr Back

In a previous edition, we expressed gladness that

was back in business. In that item, we referred to the fact that it went offline earlier – and in the process, one might have misunderstood our comment as having blamed previous owners for the shutdown. We did not intend to convey that sentient and we deeply regret any misunderstanding that resulted from what must have seemed, to some, like a much-too-casual assessment. All we meant to say was how sorry we were that it had vanished – and how glad we were that it was back. Please forgive.

5) TRAIN International Will Get You Ready

TRAIN International equips individuals and teams preparing to live and work cross-culturally and provides debriefing when they return from the field. They also offer coaching to churches that are sending and supporting cross-cultural workers. Their goal is that workers go prepared, stay effective, and return healthy and prepared for their next phase of ministry. Check out their website at

Their Upcoming Events:
ABIDE (debriefing and re-entry seminar) February 17-21, May 19-23
ORIENT (pre-field training) September 8-21

6) Learn How To Use Mobile Technology for Your Ministry

The Mobile Ministry Training Course is a newly expanded, six-week online course to introduce ministry opportunities using mobile devices. By 2015, the majority of all Internet access will be through mobile devices. This presents a unique, two-way communication channel to use for Kingdom advancement. The course begins January 21 and runs through March 3 and the cost is $55. Each week contains both theoretical and practical elements. The only requirements: an Internet connection, a computer, and a mobile phone (smart-phone or feature phone). This opportunity is offered through Mobile Ministry Forum and course information can be found at:

7) Thrive Retreat in Antalya, Turkey for Cross-Cultural Women

current-retreat-middle-eastThrive (formerly Women of the Harvest) is hosting a special get-away at the Porto Bello Hotel Resort & Spa in Antalya, Turkey for U.S. and Canadian women who live and work cross-culturally. You are invited to come and be refreshed, renewed and encouraged February 17-20, 2014. The value of your retreat experience is approximately $720. However, the only cost to you is a registration fee of US $125.00 and any travel expenses to and from the Retreat.

The retreat will include many opportunities for self care (including complementary haircuts, massages, pedicures and more), fellowship with women working cross-culturally, worship and praise, encouragement through the teaching of the Word (all in English) and connecting with new friends in discussion groups.

8) First Book published on Counseling adult Third Culture Kids

TCKIn her new book, “Belonging Everywhere & Nowhere: Insights into Counseling the Globally Mobile” Lois Bushong, an Adult Third Culture Kid (MK) and a licensed Marriage & Family therapist, delves into this previously, unexplored world of how to effectively counsel adult Third Culture Kids. Readers will discover the basic characteristics of those who have been raised with a globally mobile lifestyle and identify the counseling techniques, which are most effective for this population of client. This book is designed for present or future counselors. It is appropriate for use as a textbook for a graduate counseling program. Because of its lay terminology and use of examples and stories, it can be read and understood by global nomads and those who care about them. Find it at

on Amazon.

9) Cool Tools: The Best Voice-over-Internet Telephony Solution?

The one we all use is, of course,

It’s essentially free, good quality, easy to grasp. You can put money on account then call into the local grid. And they continue to innovate. You can pay a premium fee ($15 per month?) for conference-calling over the Internet (up to 10 or 15 people).

But there are other solutions. We have recommended, in the past

http://www.oovoo.com (Think Skype with a bit of an attitude)

Haven’t heard much from them lately. There are other such companies, like Vsee, highly recommended by MAF because of its strong injury-list.

10) Cool Tools: The Best Solution for RoboCalling

It’s a great concept. You call one number and record a brief prayer request or other comment, then, automatically, the service robo-dials (or texts) dozens or hundreds of others. The one we’ve been recommending is

These services will run you about $20/month for approximately 100 participants. You’ll have something like 45 seconds to briefly give your quick prayer request. But the great part is — you get unlimited calling (and, as a bonus, unlimited emailing) to your group. But there are others. What’s your favorite?

11) Cool Tools: The Best Webinar Solution

Use webinar software to show a presentation (like Microsoft Powerpoint) to many viewers. When we last visited this question, we recommended the free option…

But maybe you’ve found others?

At Team Expansion, we use

Maybe you’ve tried…

This is a subjective decision. But please use a comment box (below the online version of this item) to share which is your favorite and why.

12) Cool Tools: The Best Online Blog Readers?

This is a class of services that, frankly, I haven’t ever tried. However, a regular Brigada contributor from North Africa has strongly recommended Google Reader

as one of the best in this class. He explained that this was effectively a free blogging tool. He added that there was also a free tool for commenting on regular web pages that don’t have RSS feeds. Sounds great for those who do reading like this regularly.

13) Cool Tools: The Best Online Calendar Solution

Google Calendar is a free, powerful calendaring application. You can maintain multiple calendars for work, for home appointments, for project itineraries, and more. You can make hour calendars public or private, then grant read-only access or full-on “edit” capabilities to any number of friends or groups. You can allow them to see details, or merely vanilla “blocks” of committed time. And, the sync’ing capability has become a virtual switchboard for other calendars throughout multiple platforms, including smartphones, slates, personal computers, and across multiple operating systems. And — it’s all free!

But maybe you have a different/better solution? What do you prefer?

14) The BackPage: Help Christ’s Work Worldwide through Brigada

Each year, Brigada tries to raise a small budget (less than the cost of a starting pre-school teacher) to help with server costs, projects among unreached peoples, spreading the word about Brigada, and helping with the cost of our one part-time salaried assistant. We only ask for help during the last 8 weeks of the year. Fortunately, friends like you have already given $12,757.11. What does this mean? It means we only need $4362.89 to reach our current year’s budget. This could happen several different ways. If 44 people stepped up to the plate and sent a $100 gift, we’d be completely funded. Or, one motivated believer in world evangelism could give a $4400 gift, underwriting the cost of many of our readers in Global South lands where money is in short supply. It’s your call. Either way, this is the last week for giving to count toward the 2013 expense budget. We need your help. Would you consider asking your family or church to make a generous gift this weekend? If so, we’d be very grateful. Just click “Donate” in the upper right corner, or, mail a check made payable to Team Expansion (Brigada), 13711 Willow Reed Drive, Louisville, KY 40299. Team Expansion is a 501(c)3 incorporation so, for USA citizens, your gift to Christ through Team Expansion is tax-deductible. We’ll quickly send a thank-you note and receipt. We won’t add you to any mailing list unless you request it. Thanks for your prayers, your partnership, and your participation in the Brigada family!
