1) Sustainable Development Online via Columbia University for Free

college of columbiaCurious about how to implement sustainable development — that is, economic development that is also socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable — on your field or in partnership with one of your workers? Get new ideas about the challenges and pathways by tapping into Jeffrey Sachs knowledge base in a massive open online course (MOOC). The materials, in and of themselves, are comprehensive and stimulating. Check it out — and grow — at …

(Thanks Jenny!)

4) Get the East-West Church and Ministry Report for Free

The impact of the Ukraine crisis on the church and ministries in Ukraine and Russia is the subject of the latest issue of the East-West Church and Ministry Report. Editor Mark Elliott
emark936atgmaildotcom shares that grant funding is permitting the distribution of the Ukraine theme issue free to non-subscribers in English, Russian, and Ukrainian via the EWC&M Report website home page:

http://www.eastwestreport.org

This website also makes available at no charge the full text of all other issues of the EWC&M Report more than one year old. Since its founding in 1993, the EWC&M Report has covered all aspects of church life and ministry in the former Soviet Union and Central and
Eastern Europe.

5) Discover/Share Why God has Called You to the Marketplace

work as worshipFind out the purpose he has in store for you. Learn how your work can become worship. Attend the Work as Worship Conference in Dallas on Nov. 7th at Watermark Church. Learn more and register at…

http://www.workasworshipconference.org

Cost is just $49 and space is limited to just 200 more participants. Idea: Learn how they do this, then apply it in your country, region or world area.

6) Help John Write Home to his Mother

mailSuppose a missionary named John (this is his real name, by the way) asked you, as he did us this past week, for the best way to write home to his mother. How would you answer? He shared that the last letter he air-mailed from his mission field took some 60 days to arrive. Ouch. That’s enough for his mother to begin to wonder if he still cares. What’s the latest service you’d recommend that would allow him to upload the text to a website, click a button, then the vendor sends the letter to his mother from within the USA? Bam. If you can help John (and the rest of us), just click “Comment” after the online version of this item. Thanks in advance, from John. :-)

7) Is Your Laptop Slowing to a Crawl?

malwareIs your computer slowing to a crawl You could have some form of malware. How do you find out? … and how do you cleanse your machine of this possible scourge? There are several programs available for free or very little cost. One is Malwarebytes

8) Where do You Turn for Great Stock Art Photos?

fall-foliage-ii-26415251Maybe you work in a land in which it’s not safe to snap pictures of new believers. Or maybe it just feels awkward to do so. But still… it can’t be wrong to ask people to pray for the people you care about so deeply. So you’d like to picture them somehow, sometimes. Maybe you’re afraid that if you DO show pictures of them in mobilization materials, it will somehow get back to them that you did. Yikes. So what do you do? Try using stock photos. You can snag them at sites like these:

http://www.dreamstime.com (most are for sale — but for a flat fee)

http://gettyimages.com (many are free to embed, pay to print)

http://www.123rf.com/ (5 files per day, every day, for 30 days, $89)

But maybe you know of other sites that are more affordable or just better. If you do, you know the routine. Please click “comment” and share the wealth.

9) To Encrypt your Drive

It’struecrypt one thing to use a secure email client. Another to use a VPN. But what if bad guys steal your machine. In that case, you’ll wish you had encrypted your drive. Granted, you’ll take a SLIGHT speed hit — but with today’s processors and today’s encryption routines, you might not even notice the nanosecond of delay — in return for good security. So what’s the best encryption software? Our I.T. guy, Greg, says that for Mac users, the built-in Mac option is good. For Windows users, he recommends TrueCrypt. Here’s where to get a clean copy:

10) Mobile Ministry Training Course starts October 7

mobile ministryThe Mobile Ministry Forum is offering a six-week online course to introduce ministry opportunities using mobile devices. By 2015, the majority of all Internet access will be through mobile devices. This presents a unique, two-way communication channel to use for Kingdom advancement. The course starts October 7 and the cost is $55. Each week contains both theoretical and practical elements. The only requirement is an Internet connection, computer, and a mobile phone (smart-phone or feature phone.) Course information can be found at:

http://www.mobileministryforum.org/mobile-ministry-course

11) Finally, a Possible Feel-Good Movie by Major Producers

Imagine a movie portraying four “Lost boys of Sudan” winning a lottery to relocate to the USA. Picture a brash American woman assigned to help them get started in the USA. Sound like a movie made by a church in Georgia? Think again. The Good Lie…

features Reese Witherspoon (Sweet Home Alabama and Legally Blonde, among other films). It’s distributed not by an independent group in Florida, but by Warner Brothers Pictures. And the man behind the curtain is Ron Howard himself — Imagine Entertainment. We won’t have to wait long for the world to learn about the Lost Boys of Sudan. The movie opens Oct. 3rd.

12) Why Does Brigada Use Long Links in its Items?

Feel free to use this image just link to www.rentvine.comSome of our participants print and share their copies of Brigada with others. If the “real” link is hidden behind a one word “click here,” those printed pages aren’t much good. In order to convey meaning, the entire original URL needs to appear as text. Besides — we have a longstanding belief that dates all the way back to our founding that our readers deserve to be informed more honestly about where that link will take them. It’s “truth in clicking.”

13) Help Brigada Out the Door and Onto Screens Everywhere

donate-onlineIf you’d like to help get Brigada out the door and onto screens everywhere around the world, just click “Donate” in the upper right corner of our website

14) The BackPage: How Does a Guy Learn About Outreach to Comoros?

comorosBrigada began in January, 1995, with a simple dream: How do we connect like-minded folks wishing to reach out to the same unreached people groups for the sake of the Good News? Along the way, various entities have come and gone with that hope. We certainly have more data than ever to learn ABOUT the unreached. But it all comes down to this: suppose a guy named Adam comes to you (as one did to us this past week), asking how he might learn about and link up with outreaches in Comoros. Where would you send him? This guy can do English or French and he’s working through a grad program at Liberty University. Obviously, security has been an issue throughout the 20-year quest… but I just wish we were farther along than we are right now. If you have ideas (about either the overall quest — or about Comorian peoples), please click Comment below the web version of this item. Let’s see if we can get Adam some answers, recognizing or creating once and for all the infrastructure for the future, complete with security and vetting. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
