1) Thank You for the Gifts Some Gave! Could You Help us Meet Budget?

We’re so grateful for those who pitched in to the total of $11,181.09. That’s just $5,818.91 short of making our budget of $17,000. You’ll notice that $17,000 is not a full-time salary for Louisville, KY. It’s less than the amount paid to a preschool teacher. But we’re grateful, none the less, for the funds that WERE given. Want to partner with Brigada so that all may hear in order to hasten the coming of Jesus — and make up the remainder of the $17K?? We’ll wait one more week for the 2017 giving to come in. Just click “Donate” at www.brigada.org, or mail a check payable to Team Expansion (Brigada), 13711 Willow Reed Drive, Louisville, KY 40299. Team Expansion is a 501(c)3 incorporation so, for USA citizens, your gift to Christ by writing a check to Team Expansion is tax-deductible. Thank you, in advance, for your partnership!

2) We’re So Thankful…

We’re so thankful for all the messages you send and the encouragement you give. We don’t often publish those items — because we feel like it would be somewhat self-serving. So please allow us to say here, for the entire world — thank you for the encouragement!!!

3) Prayer walking as a Tool for Outreach

We had always seen prayer walking as a cool practice to lift up the needs of a new neighborhood. But we had never understood that the practice of prayer-walking could work as an active outreach tool for establishing new fields. But DMM (Disciple making movement) trainings have taught us otherwise. For example, in the Zume online training course, the prayer walking training teaches, “As you walk and pray, be alert for opportunities and listen for promptings by God’s Spirit to pray for individuals and groups you meet along the way. You can say, “We’re praying for this community, is there anything in particular we can pray for you about?” Or say, “I’m praying for this area. Do you know anything in particular we should pray for?” After listening to their response you can ask about their own needs. If they share, pray for them right away. If the Lord leads, you may pray about other needs as well. … In most cases, people are grateful you care enough to pray. If the person is not a Christian, your prayer may open the door to a spiritual conversation and an opportunity to share your story and God’s story. You can invite them to be a part of a Bible study or even host one in their home.” There’s a lot more in Zume, including a five-point outline that feeds you with ideas about WHAT to pray for a person you meet along the way. 4) Start the New Year by Downloading the Brigada app for Your Device

Regardless of whether you have iOS or Android, Brigada has an app for you. Hundreds have already downloaded and installed them. By installing the Brigada app, you’ll enjoy a smoother reading experience, and you might also see Brigada items more quickly than if you wait on the email version. Plus, the app allows you to read items offline. Open the edition at the gate of your flight, then read the items in detail while on the plane without having to pay $15 (or more!) for Wi-Fi. Is there any cost involved? Zero. So why did we make a Brigada app? Because we hoped you would enjoy them and think they’re cool. : ) And you can still comment and contribute right from your phone inside the app. So give it a try if you like. And thanks for being part of Brigada!

5) What if Every Global Church Banded With Every Other Global Church?

A couple of years ago, the Director of International Missions at the Austin Stone Community Church (Austin, TX, USA) wrote an opinion that local churches should band together globally to fulfill the Great Commission. His point was that, while the Great Commission was certainly spoken to individuals, there’s a lot to be said for the corporate church taking the baton as a group. His basis? He observed that the command was given to a corporate body (all the apostles) rather than to an individual. Jesus had told them as a group to pray for more laborers (Luke 10:2) and as a church to support those who go (3 John 8). So the idea, he wrote, was to help everyone in all congregations to think and act with a global evangelization mindset. It’s tempting to think, “If we don’t go, who will?” But the truth is, it’s the global church’s job — not anyone person or nation. At the same time, he observed, nor can we abdicate our responsibility by celebrating that “There are so many others going, we are no longer needed.” The long-term goal of the Great Commission is to make disciples who observe all Jesus’ commands — i.e., communities who proclaim the good news and display fruit of the Spirit. He conclude, “As church leaders, we must consider the Lord’s commands and we must seek the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit as we step out in faith. No matter our church’s size, age, resources, or challenges, we are not powerless, poor, or alone. Christ’s promise is for us today. He rules all things, earthly and heavenly, and he is with us to the end of the age. He will complete his mission.” Bravo. See Ryan King’s complete article here…

6) Join Us in Reading Completely Through the Bible in 2018?

There are 1,189 chapters in the Bible. As you might have suspected, the vast majority are in the Old Testament (all but 260). What this means is that if we could average 3.2 chapters per day, we could read through the entire Bible in a year. What if we read 4 chapters/day? We’d finish the entire Bible on Oct. 24th. Of course, we might miss a few days. In fact, we could miss *60* or so and still finish within the year. We know there are tons of different reading plans by which one can read through the entire Bible in a year. But — would you join us in reading 4 chapters/day on average? Let’s read through the entire book in 2018 together! Deal? If so, let’s get going January 1st with Genesis 1! Please click “Comment” following the web version of this item to let us know about YOUR progress. And — welcome aboard!

7) For What Purpose(s) do YOU do Short-term Missions?

Canadians were asked that question recently. The results might surprise you. The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada asked 3400 evangelicals what would be the main purpose of short-term mission trips. Some 75% said — “for discipleship.” Who knew!? In your opinion, how might this affect the ability of the short-term team to contribute to work on the field? Have you seen this same leaning in the trips you’ve hosted or in which you’ve taken part, or in those you’ve led? Please click “Comment” following the web or app version of this item. You can download the entire report here:

8) Track Your Goals with Strides App on Web/Mobile (for Free)

Starting a new year often prompts us to revisit our goals. Revisiting our goals often prompts us to realize we don’t really have a good way to track them. The Strides app…

https://www.stridesapp.com/
works as an app and also as a website for FREE. The designer works on a donation model — and by selling a premium plan. Either way, you get beautiful reporting and charting pages to help you keep track of routines and habits. Regardless of whether you access it by the app or the web page, you’ll always see the latest version of your data. There are multiple reminders available, and you can track by day, week, monthly, year or rolling averages. There are multiple apps like this — but this one seems to strike a nice balance between competency and price (free). What better way to start a new year? : )

10) The Photo Editor (and plug-in) That Everyone Should Install

Gimp is a fairly amazing little app. It has been developed by a terrific group of unselfish visionaries who aren’t in it for money. They have a cause: creating the greatest piece of open source photo-editing software ever — and we all benefit. If you’d like to see a review, read the #1 pick here…

http://www.techradar.com/news/the-best-free-photo-editor

So what does this mean for you? You can download a free photo-editor that helps you resize, color-correct, and take care of a thousand other challenges with the pictures you take. The one thing it WON’T do (at least, “coming out of the box”) is carry out actions to MULTIPLE files (batch actions). But fortunately, there are zillions of plug-ins to make Gimp even better. One of them, “BIMP” is designed to help you do batch actions! The wildest part of all this is — not only is this duo GREAT, but in addition, everything is free! So — if you think you’ll ever want/need to resize a photo (who doesn’t, these days?), head on over to…

12) $10,000 MA TESOL Scholarship

Here’s a scholarship that is open to new graduate students who have been accepted to APU’s field-based TESOL program and who are committed to teach English in China during two years of their academic program. This award recognizes Christian scholars who will perpetuate the mission of Azusa Pacific University during their academic studies and later as language educators. A two-year, renewable grant of $5,000 (totaling $10,000) will be awarded. Learn more at…

14) The Last Bit: What New Year’s Resolutions Are YOU Setting in 2018?

It’s New Years. Time for new resolutions. What kind of resolutions will YOU be setting for 2018? … and how do you intend to be sure to KEEP them? The NHS (the largest health website for the UK) recently suggested several key practices to make sure you forged ahead on your New Year’s Resolutions in 2018. Among them was this one — “Break your goal into a series of steps, focusing on creating sub-goals that are concrete, measurable and time-based.” Makes sense to us. They also encouraged us to tell our friends and family about our goals. Read the entire list of exhortations here…

https://www.nhs.uk/LiveWell/healthychristmas/Pages/NewYearresolutions.aspx

…then please give your reaction to these 10 tips for keeping New Year’s Resolutions. Do these 10 sound like they would help you?
