1) Short Term Missions Preparation 2nd Edition Published

“Before You Go” took 40,000 short term missionaries into God’s Presence for 40 days prior to their trips, helping prepare their hearts for what only God knows awaits. Teams serving overseas land on the ground with humble attitudes and servant hearts. Excellent and easy reads are great for any age or experience level; the 2nd Edition added testimonies and discussion questions. You can also get bulk rates from the publisher by calling 866-381-2665, ext. 1163 . Learn more at…

2) Learn More About Zúme AND Disciple-Making Movement Strategies

Now, in a four-hour “DMM/Zúme Experience,” you can come away with a much deeper understanding of disciple-making movement (DMM) strategies and life practices AND learn about Zúme at the same time. (Zúme is a 10-session, 20-hour online and in-life experience designed to help your group learn and DO fruitful strategies that might lead to a disciple-making movement (DMM) in your own church, town, and region. In this “live training” experience, you get a ‘taste of DMM” in just four hours. Instructors include Frank S. (a lifetime worker in SE Asia), Curtis Sergeant (author of “The Only One” and portions of “More Disciples”), Doug Lucas (author of “More Disciples”), Eric D, and others. You’ll love how practical and biblical the whole approach is. Plus, you’ll get a free hot breakfast! : ) The venue is just a block away from the Kansas City Convention Center (Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral located at 415 West 13th Street, Kansas City, MO 64105), 8am to 12 noon on Thursday, November 14, 2019 (a buffet breakfast will be served).  Learn more and sign up at….

This workshop is timed to coincide with the start-up of the International Conference on Missions (ICOM), which begins Thursday evening, Nov. 14th, at the Kansas City Convention Center. So you can come to the DMM Experience then stay for a day or two of ICOM while you’re there.

3) Did You Miss, "What is it Like to be a Christian in China?"

It’s ok. You can still pick up the recording. The webinar was hosted by ChinaSource on September 5, 2019 and featured Dr. Mary Li Ma, a research scholar at the Henry Institute of Christianity and Public Life at Calvin University. It explored the historical, social, and political context for Christians in China, as well as the external and internal challenges they face. You can pick up the recording for just $5.00. Get more details at…

or purchase directly at…

4) YWAM’s training vessel Next Wave’s next DTS in Greece

YWAM’s 42 meter training vessel t/v Next Wave is a great place for a Discipleship Training School (DTS) with a sailing theme. 2020 school starts 6th April on the beautiful Greek island of Chios, then sails to Skala Loutron, Lesvos for main teaching phase. Connect deeply with God, then add dinghy sailing, canoeing, snorkeling and swimming in Azure blue bays with beach BBQs. Check out

5) It’s Not Too Late to Order Hindu World Prayer Guides (for Oct. 20)

Remember that his 15-day emphasis on praying for Hindus begins October 20th. That means you still have time to get you, your group, and/or your church on board. Learn more at….

6) We Just Read "God’s Hostage" (Andrew Brunson); Couldn’t Stop

We couldn’t put it down. Once we began reading, it drew us in and we couldn’t stop. There are indeed some reality checks. Andrew openly reveals the challenges of living in a Turkish prison. We also fully capture his transparency as he dealt with the reality of questions about his faith. Why would God allow him to be captured and held like this? Why wasn’t God there to insure a quick release? If you’d like to catch all this and more, pick up God’s Hostage for a discount at…

7) Teach in the Himalayas

Love Justice International (LJI) is looking for K-12 teachers for the upcoming school year. LJI’s school, located in South Asia, strives to inspire students to become adept problem solvers, passionate learners, and difference makers for Christ through excellent education. 8) Want to Share the Gospel for the Visual Age? Try Lumo Project

9) Discover the Discover App — Now on iPhone in Turkish!

The Discover App is a free Discovery Bible Study (DBS) app for Android and iPhone in English, Arabic, Somali, Dari, Pashto and Indonesian — and now with Turkish too, on both platforms! It is ideal for running DBS groups and making disciples who make disciples – even if you don’t speak the language of the people you are reaching. Try it today on your phone.

When you search your marketplace for the app, be sure to call it “Discover Bible” — and the author will be “books.”

10) What Role Do Shepherds Play in Disciple-Making Movements?

Mark Goering posed this question in his little training video at…

after having visited the One Body Global Church in Tampa (that must be Lee Woods’s group, right? — so maybe he was attending the 2414 deal a few weeks ago?). His little 4-minute video should give us all some food for thought about how we seek shepherds for the long haul in the disciple-making movements for which we are all praying. What’s your take on his thinking?

11) What’s Your Honest Appraisal of SkillShare?

We’ve been trying out SkillShare. Honestly, there’s a lot of training offered there. It’s kind of like … Netflix for online distance learning. There are thousands of online classes. You pay a monthly fee ($12/month if you commit only monthly; $8/month if you commit annually), then study as often as you like, with whichever classes you like — in an “all-you-can-eat” fashion. They also have an interesting deal: If someone signs up with your link, that someone gets two free months to evaluate. And you, as a user, now get an extra month for free. So, for instance, here’s our link:

If you use that link to sign up, you get two free months to try it out. And for every Brigada reader who uses it, they give us a free month too, just for passing along the news.

Our take on SkillShare is that the learning community is active and vibrant. Classes are meant to be taken *together* — and the software works. But, because it’s a very broad “faculty” (anyone who wants to teach), it’s really important to review the class. Of course, since you’re not paying anything to try it, it’s kind of like Netflix. Five minutes into a movie, you can always bow out — and nothing’s lost. You can also see how many people have signed up AND there are even review scores you can read. Wouldn’t this be great for homeschoolers???

There are opportunities to make money. Once someone watches your content, you start getting royalties, similar to writing a book and getting paid by Audible. You might end up with $200/month income. Or, eventually, if you become really good, much more. (Some teachers on SkillShare are now making $100,000 plus per year.) There are nearly 30,000 courses though. You’d have to be really good to attract new students. But, we wonder — why is it that when we search for disciple-making, missions and missionary — all those choices turn up empty screens? : ) So what’s your take on SkillShare?

Remember (disclaimer), if you use our link above, you’ll receive two free months — and we receive one. But if you do so, and if you disclose your credit card, make sure you choose “monthly” as your subscription, then make a note of the date you would need to cancel your membership if you decide not to continue — please. Either way, you’d get 60 days of free classes.

12) Catch this Free 12-part Course on How to Be a Missions Mobilizer

Kenneth Ortiz put together these short-training videos on “How to be a Mobilizer.” What’s your take on them?

14) The Last Bit: Retaining Workers for the Long Haul

We were struck by the piece written by Elliot D. Stephens in the current issue of EMQ. (EMQ is a Missio Nexus publication. You’ll need a Missio Nexus log-on to read the article at the link below. But your org or church might already have one. If you don’t, this one article might be worth the price of admission.)

Entitled, “Retention and Onboarding: Are We Ready to Ask the Hard Questions,” Stephens quotes from the ReMAP 1 retention study — with “47% of career missionaries leaving by year five, with 71% leaving over preventable character issues.” Then he leads us to ReMAP 2, which concluded that, “low retention agencies were still witnessing higher attrition over preventable reasons.” The author then explains his Ph.D. dissertation study for his own agency to compare notes with ReMAP. He found that his org had a median length of service of 5 years, then quoted from Patrick Johnstone, author of Operation World. Johnstone had written that “most church planters are more effective starting in year eight.” Whoa. That was sobering. In Stephens’s case, he found that 70% of his org’s workers resigned and exited before reaching the 8th year. Stephens then quoted research by one research group that “it costs $500,000 to mobilize, select, train, send, and keep a worker on the field for four years of service.” Of course, reducing stewardship of lives to a financial figure, though sobering, is actually more costly when we look at human and spiritual factors. The bottom line: We can’t afford NOT to retain workers as long as possible.

In this day and age though… how do we DO that? Stephens spends the last half of his article exploring options, beginning with proper onboarding and pre-field training. He then looks at training once the worker is fielded. Elliot, if you’re out there somewhere reading Brigada, my hope is that you’ll develop this research into a book. Once the book is released, please tell us about it and we’ll promote it here in Brigada — because we (the Kingdom) need this. Our organizations and local churches need this. We — humanity — need this.

What are your thoughts about retention? What has your church or org learned about how to do it — to the 12-year mark, for example? What are the “best practices” — and then let’s make up our minds to DO them. Please click “Comment” following the web version of this item. And please, get the article. : ) And thank you Elliott.
