Global Internet Dial-up Question
Thank you all for the great recommendations and helpful comments, some of which I’ve included below.
OSCAR: http://www.oscar.org.uk/service/communications/internet/providers.htm
Multiple links to lists of worldwide global access ISPs.
Other recommended dial-up plans (some contract, some prepaid, some unknown):
Enjoy PrePaid: www.enjoyprepaid.com (not to be confused with prepaid.com)
Budget Dialup: www.budgetdialup.com Prepaid. Limited coverage
I Rove: www.Irove.net Pay as you go and is $6-15$/hour.
Toll Free ISP: www.tollfreeisp.net Limited coverage
Budget Dialup: www.budgetdialup.com
MaGlobe: www.maglobe.com “Prepaid. I have used this for several months and find a very good list of access numbers and ease of connection. Cost about $8 per hour in Africa, significantly less in Asia, Europe and US.”
Earthlink “has dial-up in many countries but it is not inexpensive”.
GoRemote: “I have been using GoRemote for $8.00 per hour. Had good results in Thailand, Philippines and Hong Kong. Problems in South Africa and Zambia.”
I-Pass: www.I2roam.com I-Pass received the most glowing accolades, but is much more costly than some. “I have been using I-pass for 5 years now. I can access service almost anywhere I travel in 45 countries of the world. I use their subsidiary called I2Roam. They have over 20,000 points of dialup service, as well as over 20,000 wireless hotspots as well.” Another traveler: “I travel extensively & the IPASS service provided by www.i2Roam.com is by far the best I've seen. It has local dial-up even down into the smallest town & it integrates wifi logons throughout the world where ever available.”
Suggestions for Phone options:
United World Telecom: www.uwtservices.com “Our ministry is pleased with the rates. It takes several tries, but we are often phoning cell phones in Africa.”
VoIP: Christian Phone Source http://www.christianphonesource.com/ PH 1.800.789.7819
Net2Phone
Skype
Closing comments: I’ve not had enough web access to research some of the new links sent to me. But at first glance my MaGlobe dial-up may continue to be a good choice for me for short-term dial-up in multiple countries. However, if I am somewhere for more than a week, I will search for the local prepaid cards available in more and more countries. Where they are available, I have found them to be far cheaper than the International Services.
Though not prepaid, this search finally brought me to a South Africa local dial-up called: @lantic.net, which offers a three month connection for less than $10 per month…..unlimited! As I’ll be here for multiple months, this is fantastic! Thank you all! Barb
