14) The Last Bit: Business as Missions vs. Missions as Missions

How do your workers deal with it? This past week, the question came from one of our Brigada participants, “Do people doing ‘Business as Mission’ struggle (with) balancing business and mission? Having a bifurcated focus was always hard for me as a “bivocational pastor”. What resources exist to help people deal with it?” Now, leaving aside the fact that I had to look up the word, “bifurcate” to make sure I knew what it meant (I could GUESS by the context, but wow — who uses that word? Now I’ve decided… I have to use “bifurcate” in a sentence at least ten times today to add it to my vocabulary), what do YOU do to help your workers understand this dual-edged life thing? Of course, the best teaching is that we would have incorporated Christ into our lifestyle to the point that merely by living and working a normal life, we just bring Him up regularly as we walk and talk, right?

I appreciated the fact that this inquirer, whom we’ll call “Charlie,” also cc’d Justin L. on the same email. Justin responded (copying us), “The big challenge I have often heard is the paradigm shift away from bifurcation. That the business IS the mission. In other words, people who run a business in order to make disciples of workers, families, and customers – who model how Christianity is lived out in the context of business, work, social, home life, etc. … There are several BAM networks out there and some literature about it. …

Justin” [Thank you Justin!]

But how do you prepare YOUR workers — in your church or organization — to sort this whole question out effectively?

1) Frontier Filmmaking Seminar coming to Taiwan & Japan

The Frontier Filmmaking Seminar (FFS) is a 6-week training workshop in Taipei that includes a practical field assignment where participants work together with an experienced film crew to produce an evangelistic, dramatic film in the language and culture of an unreached people group. We cover basic training in a variety of filmmaking disciplines including proven cross-cultural methods and participants serve as production assistants on the film in Japan. Learn more at…

3) We asked about Jail Ministries: You Answered!

Wow … we recently asked if you could refer us to any good jail ministries. What a fantastic thread of responses — and it’s still growing. Add your favorite “best example of a jail ministry ever” at…

Or take a look at the growing list of case studies there. We’ve already benefited from talking to some of them. Thanks for your input!

4) TESOL Training in Asia

just so you can get started with some of the best. Many of the pages are being translated into Russian and Spanish for your friends who are more at home in those languages.

6) Any Good Case Study Examples of Using Social Media for Outreach?

We continue to be interested in the concept of utilizing Facebook and other social networking sites for outreach… or at least to filter for interested searchers. There must be tons of good examples of this. We’ve mentioned before that the folks at Kingdom Training are now offering a course in this for free. Find it at…

https://kingdom.training/

But today we were wondering — what are some examples of seeing this at work? Where might we see case studies in effective outreach through Facebook? Surely there are examples? Know of any?

7) In our Ongoing Search for Missions Training Sites…

What are some of the other sites you have found to be effective for good missions training, either in person or online? Today, for example, we happened across…

http://www.missionprep.ca/

What have you heard about this group in Canada? Looks like they do a two-week course in cross-cultural training, another two-week course in language acquisition, and a five-day debriefing experience. Anyone have personal experience there?

8) Are there any DOWNSides to Disciple Making Movements?

Today, purely for the sake of asking the question, we did some serious Google searching on a quest of trying to find the DOWN side of disciple making movement (DMM) principles and practices. Interestingly, we couldn’t find much (any?) at all. Do you know of anyone who is saying negative things about disciple-making movements? If so, please click “Comment” following the web version of this item. We couldn’t find any. At all.
