AD2000 & BEYOND RELEASES NEW ADOPT-A-PEOPLE VIDEO
How long have you been waiting for a video that shares case studies of real live “adopt-a-people” projects from around North America, complete with “how-to” suggestions and “lessons learned” examples???? Wait no longer. AD2000 has teamed up with Caleb Project to produce Ordinary People, Extraordinary Love, available today for $12 (plus shipping and handling). This fast-moving series of case studies and mini-interviews gives you all the examples for which you’ve been waiting. You’ll see churches just like yours, both large and small, which have successfully adopted unreached peoples. Yes, it’s slanted toward churches sending short-term teams and yes, it does seem to be slanted toward sending prayer journeys as a key part of the strategy for reaching the unreached, but hey, what else would you expect from the gal who formerly was Coordinator of the JP2000 Project office at AD2000!!! (Mary Ann Stone had a key role in putting the video together.) Actually, short-term trips are eventually tied in very well with the development of a long-term strategy for trained on-site teams. And the quality is, of course, excellent. What else would you expect from the same people who brought you Light the Window, To the Ends of the Earth!?! The Carltons have done it again. First class stuff, as always. (Note: Caselots of 50 can be had at $5 each.) There’s a 27 minute version and a 6 minute version for people “on the run.” :-) (Like I say, it’s produced for a North-American audience.) Write Caleb Project at
10 West Dry Creek Circle
Littleton, CO 80120
or call 303-730-4170

While you’re at it, check out the video on the Maratha people, originally produced by Kingdom Building Ministries, also $12, 12 minutes long. The two would make a great “one-two punch” — the big picture and a specific example. In this case, AD2000 and Caleb Project have targeted a North American audience, but others from around the world will find it interesting, as well. This one’s a keeper, gang. You’ll be able to use it at your missions fair, in your planning meetings, and in your mobilization workshops. Lots of short interviews… lots of practical info… and lots of motivational examples. This one could be titled, “So you’re thinking about adopting an unreached people, eh?” :-)

————————————–

TAKE YOUR AT&T OVERSEAS ACCESS NUMBERS WITH YOU!
Tina, this is especially for you . . . and for all the people who have to call home from those overseas locations where “1-800-…” means nothing. Visit AT&T’s web site at http://www.att.com/traveler/iacf/download.html for a copy of AT&T’s free software that automatically gives you overseas contact numbers and dialing instructions for calling home. No laptop to take with you on the trip? Use the software’s options to print out the info. for the countries you’re visiting… and that way you’ll never have to scramble around for a copy of one of those little dialing cards we always seem to lose . . you know . . . the ones with each country’s toll-free number to get AT&T direct. The software’s free and it works fast and simple. No complex commands… just point and shoot. It’s great!

KEEP AN EYE ON FREE FAXING
Don’t forget to follow the TPC fax service that we’ve profiled before . . . . at http://www.tpc.int/servers . . . if you want to learn more about how to fax the world for free. If you don’t have web access, email tpccoveratinfodottpcdotint to look at the list of places where you can take advantage of this unique service, last profiled in Brigada Today in March, ’97.

WORK WITH THE WORD IN AFGHANISTAN
N.R. Word nrwordathotmaildotcom is a Christian author who is hunting for information on Afganistan (especially the poorer area of Kabul). He is also interested in what the roles of children, older men, and women are. If you have an interest there, why not at least write him to ask for an abstract of his work when it’s complete. If you are working with someone there, write him but remember to always guard the identities and locations of those who are in creative-access countries for Christian reasons.

————————————–

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM THE GLOBAL GAMES
world globe More than 350 Christian volunteers and full-time ministers are ready for work at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. The teams will work in coffee houses set up for evangelism, in hotel information booths, as garbage collectors, as chaplains, and in singing and drama performances in the marketplace. Christians are to be the only religious group represented by chaplains in Nagano, a city with one of the largest Buddhist temples in the world. Those involved include missionaries from the Southern Baptists, Campus Crusade for Christ, Athletes in Action, International Bible Society, InterVarsity, Youth With a Mission and the American Bible Society. 1,500 ‘Jesus’ videos in multiple languages are ready for athletes and officials in their own languages.

FUN FACTS TO KNOW AND TELL, SEEN STREAMING ACROSS THE NET
Percentage of the African continent that is wilderness, 28%. Percentage of North America that is wilderness — 38%! Guess those Africans have been developing their backyards a little faster than we thought! :-)

WEB WATCH
WebWatch The Southern African Missiological Society (SAMS) has a Web page which gives information about its activities at: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/8409/ They give information about the Society, and about its journal Missionalia, and its work in making abstracts of mission-related articles from journals published around the world. There is also information about the SAMS annual congress, links to other sites dealing with mission, missiology and mission studies around the world, and a contact point for researchers on African Independent Churches.

SEND YOUR TESOL TRAINING IDEAS & RESOURCES FOR COMPILATION
Mary Burton actsatlccdotnet wrote to ask if we had information on TESOL resources. Well anytime anyone asks such a question, our standard answer is, “Want to compile one?” :-) So give her everything ya got! :-) She’ll compile it and we’ll post it here later for all to download. She’s especially interested in resources designed for those who desire to reach out to the nations of the world at their doorstep. “There are some agencies I know of but they require leaving your home, job, etc. and then signing up with them to go overseas,” Mary wrote. “We live in a city where the hispanic, non-english speaking population is very high. Two weeks ago, we led 54 non-english speaking South Americans to the Lord with an interpreter. But using TESOL, we can go back into the area and offer them practical help and reach out to others with the gospel.” Either way, she’ll compile every resource you’ve got. Be sure to write her directly… no need to copy us here at Brigada. :-) She’ll send us the finished product. (We always seem to get blitzed with “cc:” emails on these projects. :-) )

————————————–

CAN YOU GET ALONG WITH A MOODY WEB PAGE?
Now here’s a site for sore eyes!!! At http://www.moody.edu/sfs you can learn about “Sermons from Science,” Moody’s science films that are translated into 65 million languages, that can address a high-level intelligent audience or amaze a lay level one, that can be used to sensitize a non-Christian audience or strengthen the faith of a believing one! A bunch of us used these in a “Christian Friendship Festival” in the former Soviet Union in 1991 and out of those sessions came our first believers in a new church that has now reached a regular weekend worship attendance of 650 people! Check ’em out! . . . and while you’re there, check out Moody’s Founder’s Week Bible Conference at http://www.moody.edu where you’ll hear streaming audio live from the likes of speakers like George Verwer, International Coordinator, Operation Mobilization. Great stuff! thumbs-up

HOW MANY SPEAK WHICH LANGUAGE
Faithful to his quest to find out which languages are most widely spoken, Eric ericdanielleatjunodotcom wrote that according to “Friends of Turkey” and “People International,” two prominent mission agencies focused on Turkic peoples and Central Asia, the Turkish language is the fifth most spoken language in the world with over 170 million speakers, including Turkic languages closely related to Turkish. (That includes nations such as Turkey, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgystan, Kazakstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Within these nations are many smaller Turkic people groups such as the Tatars, Hazaras, Yoruk, Uighers, Bashkirs, Chuvashes, Gaguaz and others.) According to the Guineas Book of Records (1997) there are approx. 3,950 languages, while a recent report in TIME Magazine reported that linguists estimate that there are currently 6,500 languages spoken in the world.

There are also variations to the numbers of people speaking languages.
Chinese speakers are between 726 million to 1 billion.
English 427 million to 1.5 billion
Spanish 266 million
Arabic 180 million

(Turkic languages are not listed in the TIME magazine report because they have listed each Turkic language separately, e.g. Turkish, Kazak, Uzbek, etc.)

————————————–

FILMS FOR YOUR FIELD
Ever come across the “Sermons from Science” film series by Moody? We used several of these to kick off a Friendship Festival in Ukraine a few years ago and they were very effective. In our case we brought over a high-tech engineer from the USA to moderate discussion about the film. You might try such an arrangement. IT’S A DIRTY LIFE, BUT SOMEBODY HAS TO TRAIN IN HAWAII
:-) That’s what Greg and Mona Crawford commitatjunodotcom do for a living… train missionaries for outreach in Asia. They do it from their base in Hawaii. Hey — don’t laugh! I’m serious! If your short-term missions team needs a training stopover on the way to Asia… or a debriefing stopover when you return, give ’em a call!!! The average stay is about two days and the cost is only $139 which includes tuition & related materials, food, lodging, and ground transportation. Now we just need someone brave enough to sample their services and give us a report back in a future issue of Brigada Today!!! :-)

FOCUS ON NATIVE AMERICANS
Interested in learning more about reaching Native Americans? Catch The Focus on the Family radio broadcast on January 14th, when Dr. Dobson Huron Claus and Richard Twiss on that very subject!

MORE ABOUT LEADERSHIP
lighting the way David Blanton’s interest was pricked by the recent reference to leadership “MAGIC” (“LEADERSHIP MAKES THE DIFFERENCE”, from Brigada Today, 19 of Dec., ’97). So interested is he, in fact, that he’d like to ask for those who have other resources or outlines such as the one listed with the acrostic, MAGIC. If you have a favorite book or other resource, send it to David dblantonatwritemedotcom and he’ll compile the list into a file we’ll all be able to download at a later date.

————————————–

MISSIONS MESSAGE WATERED DOWN
David wondered if you caught some of the great articles at http://www.domini.org/express/metrofly/titles.htm regarding water purification and other medical issues for missionaries. Check it out!

————————————–

NEED A GOOD ‘ONLINE’ BIBLE?
John says to check out the Online Bible v6.13. It apparently has KJ, Valera Reina, Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, Strong’s and Lexicon, dictionaries and commentaries. He wrote to Brigada Today this past week, “I came across their web site at http://www.biblecd.com and they have a special offering of their program for missionaries.” Apparently it is an online Bible for $6. The company wrote, “This is the deluxe edition. It does not include Niv, Nas, Nrs due to copyrights but it has a ton (well, not literally) of material on it.” (To get the most recent version, you’ll have to pay more. See their web site for more info. If you want the $6 version (a real steal), they ask that you send your name and address on the field, the name and address of your sponsor, shipping address if different, $6. You can do this either by mail with check, or with charge card by fax. (Remember to never send your credit card via e-mail unless it is encrypted.) Note that they also offer the Sage Digital Lib cd Vol 1-4 for $15 to missionaries.

————————————–

WE GET SMILE MAIL
Thanks to all those who wrote to express gratitude for the “glossary of email symbols.” Apparently, they weren’t so widely known as some had assumed. And we’re always grateful for the encouragement that Brigada participants extend. But most of all, we’re grateful for the partnership we share with each of you.

————————————–

TAKE THE NEXT STEP
North American Partnership in Mission Training is having its first annual meeting in Colorado Springs on January 31, 1998. The Next Step is a partnership of churches, agencies, trainers and mission mobilizers working to establish recognizable training standards that will address missionary attrition and field effectiveness. Woody Phillips, president of United World Mission, is the convener and founder of The Next Step. The Next Step is a North American response to the Reducing Missionary Attrition Project (ReMAP) that indicated that 72% of missionary drop out was preventable. The Next Step Partnership invites those involved with missionary training, to consider partnering with The Next Step. … There is still room at Glen Erie for participants. Explore the web site at http://www.thenextstep.org.

————————————–

MPACT ’98
Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary located in Fort Worth, Texas, will be sponsoring a student missions conference (MPACT ’98) on February 27-March 1, 1998, targeted at college students interested in world missions. For further conference information, see our website at http://www.swbts.edu/mpact98/index.htm.

————————————–

LANGUAGE QUEST
Eric Jensen is a man on a quest! He recently read a statistic that claims, “Turkish is the fifth most spoken language in the world”. He wrote to Brigada this past week to say, “I was wondering if you know anyone who can support or deny that claim and can anyone tell me what are the top 4 spoken languages?” If you can help Eric, write him at ericdanielleatjunodotcom and maybe he’ll send us a copy of his conclusions.

COMING HOME? KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS?
Former missionary Walter Sanchez has designed a questionnaire for missionaries to answer when returning to their home country before being debriefed by their home church’s missions committee. Churches may browse it from http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/5645/Questionaire.html and use it as is or modify it as needed.

By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.

GUESS YOU NEED AN ADDRESS! (“BE A WRITING PARTNER”)
lighting the way Sorry to all those who wanted to contact Turkish World Outreach to “be a writing partner” (see last week’s Brigada Today). Truth is, I just didn’t remember to give you the email address!!! :-( Oh well — that’s one way to insure that we get lots of mail! :-) Try UGDM79Aatprodigydotcom or write TWO, 508 Fruitvale Ct., Grand Junction, CO 81504 or telephone (970) 434-1942.

————————————–

FOR THE JP2000 RECORDS…
One report that came back this past week pointed to a faulty statistic in Taiwan. Apparently the number of Taiwan Uyghers are reported to number 26,000 in Taiwan… whereas the researchers from one recent JP2000 trip found only 200 or so!!! Rats. So… the reporter suggested, tongue in cheek, “…This could be one of those fantastic reports! [Our mission] went to Taiwan where JP2000 reported 26,000 Muslim Uyghers without access to Christ and without hope. In just one day, after one visit to the Chief Mosque of Taiwan, the [our mission] left only 200 Uyghers who still did not believe. That has to be better than most statistics! 25,800 reached in a day!” Got any other testimonies from JP2000 projects? (Maybe some pro, some not so pro???)

————————————–

INCOMING: RESEARCH ON RETURNING SHORT-TERM MISSIONARIES
Neil SEASTEPatGOLDENdotNET is doing research on returning short-term missionaries. If you’re interested in a copy, email Neil today!
note (Note: He probably won’t have the research completed ’til spring ’99.)

EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES FOR MISSIONARY KIDS… ON THEIR WAY!
Brett brettatcyberhighdotorg wrote to clue us in on the recent MK education conference in Dallas, hosted by Wycliffe. Evidently it was a complete success. Over 14 international mission agencies and schools attended (SIM,SHARE,SEND, Black Forest Academy, MAF, etc). Brett wrote, “We had a great time as we discussed current trends, needs, obstacles, resources, and action plans as they related to the issue of MK education with a special focus on technology as a source of help.” A team of five attendees [including Brett] was established to act as the liaison between the other 10 or 11 attendees in disseminating, assessing, and providing updates on resources which may help meet the many education needs of MK’s. The main vehicle for accomplishing our purpose will be a web-page [as of yet not active]. According to Brett, “A member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) said that ACSI would help to financially sponsor the web-page setup costs—Thank you ACSI.” (Brett, be sure to let us know as you open this service up!) Two demonstrations were given to show the attendees what is already available in the arena of technological resources. CyberHigh (grades 7-12) and the Potter’s School(math tutoring) both demonstrated how on-line education could help to meet the needs of both MK’s and MK schools. And by the way, CyberHigh has changed its name to NorthStar Academy so as to avoid confusion between itself and the Cyber High School of California. For more info., email Brett directly.

JOIN “OPERATION REVEILLE” FOR BOSNIA
Bruce 73362dot1503atcompuservedotcom of Operation Reveille is looking for the scoop on Bosnia to send to military chaplains and ministry organizations working with military — to involve them in prayer and support. Bruce would like everything from information, brochures, appeals for support, prayer requests, etc, for the packet. Send him your info. today!

————————————–

WE GOOFED!
lighting the way In last week’s item, “VIDEOS FROM CB INTERNATIONAL,” we mistakenly confused CBI and CBFM. We’d better keep our initials straight! CBInternational, which formerly went by the name, “Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society,” is based in Wheaton, Illinois and is related to the CBAmerica churches. But the videos are being offered by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship mission agency that relates to many Southern Baptist churches. Pardon our typo! Thanks to Michael Jaffarian MichaelDawnaatcompuservedotcom and many others who wrote in to help us spot this error.

————————————–

GROW IN YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE ETHNIC HARVEST
In the interest of encouraging ministry to the many ethnic groups around us, World Relief in the Bay Area is sponsoring an “Ethnic Harvest Briefing.” (See November 28 issue of Brigada Today.) Organizers now have speakers selected and have launched a web site at http://expage.com/page/ethnicharvest. For more information write Rich Sexton, World Relief at rsextonatgtedotnet.

————————————–

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
world globe Millions of Christians have started praying for Muslims worldwide beginning this past week, on January 1 1998. The “Prayer for the Islamic world” project which started in Australia encourages Christians all over the world to participate individually, as a family, or church group. Youth With a Mission published the printed prayer guides which are also available by e-mail. Around 10 million Christians took part in this global prayer initiative last year, many of whom also fasted. Insiders describe the resulting reports of God’s move among Muslims as ‘phenomenal’.
(Source: DAWN Friday Fax, 97-50. To receive “30 Days’ prayer for Muslims” by e-mail send a message to with
Subscribe 30-days
as the message’s text.)
Global Glimpse is compiled each week by John Hanna, Caleb Project, Littleton, CO.

note (Note: Please be in prayer for John and Gwen’s new little baby “Jori” [short for Jordan], born 8 weeks premature. There are positive signs, but prayer is still needed! She has a blood clot below her left kidney, a failed adrenal gland, and a feverish Mom. Please pray!)

————————————–

NO, THE INTERNET DOESN’T NEED A “THOROUGH CLEANING”
In case anyone asks (or emails you), the answer is ‘no’, the Internet doesn’t need to close down on Feb. 27th for a thorough cleaning. It’s just another piece of Internet “legend” that forms into its own kind of self-replicating “virus” to soak up additional bandwidth.

————————————–

LOCAL CHURCH FACILITATOR TRAINING
Are you a local church leader wanting training in developing strategic five-year missions plans? If so, Bruce Camp’s program might be for you! This training, which uses the Global Access Planner (GAP), is designed to alert churches to the latest thinking regarding what a local church can do in missions as well as will assist a church in developing their own game plan. Missions pastor Mel Loucks commented after participating in a GAP training session: “It was superb. It gave me a practical tool which I can use immediately to help my church understand how we must change our approach in missions. Additionally, the GAP materials provided me with a way to develop a five-year plan that is unique for my church.” The next training day is set for Friday, January 30, from 9:00 to 5:00 in Rockford, IL. The cost is $65 which includes all materials and lunch. For more information, look at the EFCM website http://www.efcm.org under Local Church Resources – Material Resources or contact Bruce Camp by phone (714-248-1236) or e-mail bkcampatcompuservedotcom.

WEB-WATCH
WebWatch Check out the links at http://www.domini.org/express/metrofly/miss.htm, where you can read newspapers from just about any country in the world, convert currency, etc. The site is sponsored by a travel agency — one that has found a great way to offer a free service on the web while promoting its own fares! Bravo!

————————————–

MED STUDENTS WITH LOANS READ THIS!
Ever hear of Project MedSend? If you’re a med student with accumulating loans… and if you’re considering medical missions as a career, then MedSend might be “just what the doctor ordered!” Read all about it at http://www.sim.org/medsend/index.html. They’ve done 39 grants in 4 years. Cool. thumbs-up

————————————–

WE TAKE THE HEAT FOR SMILES
lighting the way Rats. rats face Some readers didn’t want to read about smiles (last week’s, “EXPANDED SMILIE DICTIONARY”). One even asked how in the world we decide what to put in and what not to put in Brigada Today. Honestly??? A lot depends on the quality of the stuff we can find during the intervening weekdays. So… if you see another smiley dictionary sometime in the near future, better help us find some great material! So… for all those who didn’t like the smiley dictionary, become a great source for Brigada and … we’ll all be smiling real smiles in gratitude! :-)

————————————–

OUT OF THE COUNTRY, OUT OF TOUCH???
Nobody can say for sure. But in my overseas travels during the next two weeks, if I can’t get access to the Internet, Brigada Today might be silent for the first time in nearly two years! So… if you don’t get a copy during the next two weekends, we’ll find out if you really missed us when we come back with the Jan. 23rd issue. If we can get access, we’ll do our best to send from wherever we happen to be logged on. Thanks for understanding!
Doug

VIDEO IS A HIT!
Remember that Mormon video we mentioned? It’s a hit!!! One reader wrote, “Doug, I viewed the Mormon video this weekend, and it is excellent. They allow the Mormons to tell their side of the story, but then the video shows how to be loving and missionary to these incredibly committed, family-oriented, and good people.” Once again, it’s produced by the Interfaith Witness Department of the North American Mission Board, 4200 North Point Parkway, Alpharetta, GA 30022-4176. The 800 number for orders is 800-634-2462. 56 minutes in length.”

————————————–

BE A WRITING PARTNER
Turkish World Outreach needs Christian volunteers who will send ten Gospel Letters per month to Muslim families in Turkey. They reportedly have more than three million current addresses and are praying for Gospel Letter Volunteers to reach each one. They provide Turkish letters, a translation, addresses, and instructions. Volunteers are asked to provide the postage and envelopes to send their ten letters monthly. Postage is 60 cents per letter (from the US). The letters are in Turkish and offer a free Turkish New Testament and “Jesus Film” video. An effective follow-up program is underway in Turkey, and Christian workers will reach out to those who show a serious interest in the Gospel. Each respondent will also receive the offer of a free Bible correspondence course.

SEEKING GREAT TESTIMONIES OF ADOPT-A-PEOPLE (JP2000) PROJECTS
Have you noticed the silence? Sometimes it seems deafening. There was so much “missions noise” bringing in the 90s . . ., right up through the middle of the decade. And now, if I’m not mistaken, it seems the tone has definitely dropped off some. ‘What’s gone wrong with the harvest?’

So — we need some testimonies. If you’ve got a great story about how the Joshua Project 2000 list is helping (or dare I say, hurting?) you, your church or mission agency — or if you’ve got a great adopt-a-people project going, send it our way! Two pages max… concise story about what God is doing in our midst.

Who knows… we just might turn these babies into a helpful resource for new projects! :-)

IMPORTANT: Don’t mention anything sensitive. We suggest that you might be able to give names of countries, but in many cases, you’ll need to “rename” or disguise the name of the people group and never, never, never give the names and addresses of on-site team members if they live in secure situations. Your call. But if you send it, we will publish it! :-) Let’s get the word out about what God is doing.

PLEASE: Make the subject line read, “Project Update: ….” where “….” describes a suitable title for your project, even if it’s simply the name of the group you’re reaching.

Let us know if you need check-back on anything before we publish the info, either online or on paper. We’d prefer not to have to do that of course… so if possible, make it public from the start.

Please send these items to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg.

Thanks again!
Doug Lucas

Many did. Sorry about that! The folks at MAFxc tell me they’ve now taken drastic measures to make sure that no more extraneous email will pass through unnoticed. We hope and pray they’re right! Thanks for your patience!

THE BEST INTERNATIONAL NEWS . . . FOR FREE!!!
We continue to be very impressed by INFOBEAT (formerly San Jose Mercury News) and its free feed to email inboxes! For more information, visit http://www.infobeat.com. The summaries can be selected by region… so you get only the focus you want, and each little “Brigada-like” summary paragraph has a URL to click on to get the entire new story. All for free! Incredible bargain. If you’re taking cable just to watch CNN, I bet you’ll unsubscribe after you start reading this! And now, they even ship out a special version suitable for “Outlook Express” and other MIME/HTML-compatible email clients. Terrific-looking stuff!

————————————–

GET CONNECTED TO KEY SOURCES FOR PEOPLE GROUP INFO.
Been looking for great input on your people group of choice??? Maybe there’s a Brigada-Connections conference for the group for which you’re praying! To find out, just send a message to hubatxcdotorg with this simple text on the first line (not the subject):
conferences brigada

With any luck, you’ll receive an auto-mailed message in your inbox in a jiffy! It’ll list the entire family of Brigada conferences. Once you find one you want to join, just send a message back to that reads, “subscribe brigada-peoples-sasak” (replace sasak with the people group of your choice — but make sure there’s a conference by that name before trying!). Or, if there’s a brigada-connections conference, just email your questions to brigada-connections-acehnese (replace Acehnese with the people group you’re researching, but make sure there’s a “brigada-connections” conference for that group first!). One of the real live humans monitoring the connections conference will try to answer your query.

And guess what — it’s all free!!!! :-)

————————————–

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD IS NOT SO FAR AWAY AS IT ONCE WAS
… at least now you can pray informedly!!! The 1998 “Intercessors for China” Prayer Calendar is being made available to Brigada readers at a special reduced rate. This full-color calendar was developed by Silk Road Ministry Staff. It is designed to help you focus on the people in 40 Gateway Cities in north China. This calendar is intended to help Christians outside China pray strategically, comprehensively and specifically for the people and country of China. The price is $4 per individual calendar or $10 per bundle of 5! To order, Call Integrated Resources at 1-800-729-4351 and ask for item 7707e.

————————————–

CATCH ADDITIONAL PERSPECTIVES!
clarification In last week’s item, “PERSPECTIVES LOUISVILLE STYLE,” we announced a January 20th date when, we’re told, it should have been January 22nd. Either way, if you’re interested in Perspectives in the Louisville area, contact 75451dot1611atcompuservedotcom for more information. ‘Course, if you’re from N. Indiana, in the city of Chesterton, you’ll start Monday, January 12th. For audit or credit, (college or graduate), contact gregcatlbchurchdotorg. And… if you’re in Eugene, OR, and Indy or Louisville is too far to commute, your sessions run on Sundays, 5-8pm, Jan 11-Apr 26, for credit or enrichment. Contact Tim Watson 102124dot1064atcompuservedotcom or (541-345-0341) or lknappatefndotorg.

————————————–

WHEN DOES MIME GIVE YOU THE SILENT TREATMENT???
When your email reader can only handle ASCII text, that’s when. In those cases, you’ll see dreaded “equals3D” characters when MIME email clients have sent you special characters. As a result, Jonathan Marsden (our “tech-on-call”) wrote this past week to recommend that we use *asterisks* for emphasis instead of =equal= signs. Unfortunately, I’ve been building the habit of =equal= signs for nearly 3 years!!! So… I’d like to ask you for =patience* while I learn! :-) Jonathan also suggested
a) not using MIME at all on mailings like Brigada Today since there are many ASCII only clients still in use, and
b) avoiding non-ASCII characters (such as special foreign language symbols not included in the standard ASCII set — “inyeah,” tildes, and the like). We’ll try to comply.

————————————–

A DEGREE OF DIFFERENCE… IN ARABIC
SisterMarieatjunodotcom needs someone with a degree in Standard (classical) Arabic to proof-read some Arabic books she’s written. Got any friends who read from right to left? If so, give SisterMarieatjunodotcom a jingle if you can help.

————————————–

LEADERSHIP MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
As this issue of Brigada Today hits the wires, our mission organization has just sponsored a training weekend in Miami for our team leaders from throughout the globe. Projects in some 30 cities or people groups in 22 countries were represented. We document the basic outline here in the hopes that it will spawn creative thinking in your head for the mission or church within which you work. Maybe you could pull your leadership together and improve on the model below. Either way, throughout the weekend there was a particular kind of magic that permeated the event.

M – “meetings.” Our team leaders were able to meet their peers from throughout the globe, as well as new mission leadership and board members. The camaraderie that developed was perhaps the most important outcome of the meeting. One team leader reported, “It’s been great to meet others with more experience so I can try to learn from their example.” In fact, a buddy added up the years of on-field experience and the cumulative total summed up to 188 years!

A – “art of leadership.” All day long on Friday, the emphasis was on creating all the more effective leadership at the team level.

G – “gaining resources and skills” and the particular skill we featured on Saturday was conflict management. Throughout the day, the sessions focused on how to help team members resolve the sticky issues they face on mission teams.

I – “integrity.” The emphasis on day 3 was proper relationships with family, friends, team-mates, and singles. In each relationship, delegates learned how to communicate and empathize with integrity as Jesus would.

C – “checkpoint” — thus the “c.” For our teams, our mission as a whole, and for ourselves in particular, the weekend gave us a chance to step back and look at our world through new eyes.

Without exception, delegates asked for similar gatherings in the future. So we’re already at work planning the next team leaders’ summit sometime in mid-1999. At the next meeting we hope to include spouses as well.

Without a doubt, it was a landmark event. As we head into 1998, we’re hoping each and every team will experience the difference of all the more effective leadership no matter where they serve with Team Expansion.

So how ’bout you and your agency/church? Could you benefit from a bit of “magic?”

“X-SPURTS ARE US”
Are you considered by your friends a “PC Expert?” Here’s how you can tell —

1. the person in the cubicle next door asks your help installing a new program
2. you’re the one asked to install the new printer
3. it’s your phone that rings when someone sees a “fatal error.”

If any of these conditions is true, you need our new “X-SPURTS ARE US” help file. PC Magazine just carried an article that might help! We’re making it available to you as an excerpt on this conference, because it should help us set some uniform ideas for helping organize chaos out of this PC-madness. If you’re interested, download it by sending a message to hubatxcdotorg that simply says:
get brigada pcexpert

Next time someone rings your PC-chimes, you just might be glad you did! It’s 7K — and it contains suggestions on everything from how to organize your hard drive to how to set up an emergency boot disk.

GLOSSARY OF SYMBOLS… “TAKE TWO”
clarification Yikes:-)…. Last week we sent the Brigada Today with the “quoted printable” switch turned “on” (quite by accident) so all our glossary symbols were scrambled! Sorry if you thought we were =3Dserious=3D when you saw all those “=3D” symbols! Let’s try it again….

_Title_ — These underscores indicate a title or a book, film, or boat. In “real” writing, the title would be underlined or italicized.

=emphasis= — These equal signs indicate emphasis. In real writing, the word would be printed in bold.

:-) — This symbol (an ’emoticon’) represents a grin or a “chuckle.” In real writing, . . . well . . . in real writing I guess the author wouldn’t grin or chuckle. :-)

:-( — You guessed it. An internet sad face. You kind of have to turn your head sideways to the left to see these. :-)

< > — These pointed braces indicate the beginning and ending of internet email addresses or Worldwide Web URLs.

[sic] — This word is placed after an item quoted when the author wants to indicate that there’s a mistake in the quotation and the mistake is being retransmitted precisely as it occurred in the original citation.

!!! — This symbol is often used in Brigada Today to indicate a really enthusiastic sentence. Email seems so bland, we figure you have to do something to spruce it up. :-)

Clearer???

LOOKING FOR TRIBAL TRAINING FOR THE PHILIPPINES?
Look no further. Tribal Mission Philippines, Inc. tmpdavaoatweblinqdotcom is a missions agency committed to train Philippine nationals to reach out to their own people. They take advantage of medical outreach and other strategies… and are eager to help any and all Philippine ministries get started.

TIME TO PRAY FOR ALGERIA
More than 75,000 Algerian men, women and children have been brutally massacred over the last five years in an ongoing conflict in the name of religion and politics. The international community has for the most part washed its hands of the violence, preferring not to get involved in trying to find a solution. What Algeria and its 30 million people need more than anything else is focused intercession and spiritual warfare for deliverance from the powers of darkness and destruction operating behind the politics and economics of the situation. There is only a tiny Christian community of about one half of one percent. Pray for a political solution which brings peace, reconciliation and an end to the ongoing massacres of thousands of people. Also remember those who have become disillusioned with Islam because of the blood shed under its name. May these become serious seekers of the Truth and accept Him who is the truth. Pray for those who are worshipping in underground groups, for protection and growth spiritually, numerically etc. Many thousands have turned to the Lord among the Berbers largely through supernatural revelations of Jesus Christ.

30 DAYS MUSLIM PRAYER BY E-MAIL
The Global Communications Track is again delighted to compliment the 30-Days Muslim prayer focus by offering the 1998 e-mail edition. Taken from the original booklets, the e-mail version is a one-page extract from both the Adult and Kids booklets with the full prayer points present. Designed to be easy to read and accessible for those who can’t otherwise join millions of Christians to pray, organizers hope that as with other years this will be a big hit. The 30-Days Muslim prayer focus runs January 1-30 ’98 coinciding with Ramadan. Last year some 10 million Christians were estimated to have joined this annual global prayer event. Only God knows the answers to our prayers as we have joined together around a common theme. A great joy has been to see not just individuals and families pray together, but also prayer groups and churches. Make sure everyone you know gets hold of these prayer guides, either the booklet or the e-mail version and let us again, believe God for great things. What a great way to begin the New Year!! To receive the e-mail edition, send an e-mail to HUBatXCdotOrg with just the following two words in the message:

GOOD NEWS FROM THE OFFICE OF AD2000…
… came this note this past week: “The International Office of AD2000 and Beyond Movement is seeing a flurry of interest in networking. Churches and agencies are taking seriously the Movement’s goals of cooperation and avoidance of duplication. AD2000 and Beyond tracks adoptions, evangelistic activity and church planting among peoples on the Joshua Project 2000 list. It is our experience that the vast majority of churches adopting peoples are actively seeking to connect with agencies that may already be involved. Some churches are partnering with an agency so that those raised as missionaries from their congregation, automatically are directed to the mission agency’s application and training process. Others seek agency projects or missionaries to which they might give financial and prayer support. Some are developing plans for short-term trips or projects, while receiving counsel from agencies with experience and expertise. It is a tremendous encouragement to see this visible display of creativity and unity for the cause of Christ.” I take that to be a very positive message! For more information on how you can network with other churches adopting unreached peoples via the AD2000 International Office, contact Barb Bills at barbatad2000dotorg. She’s now the Joshua Project 2000 Coordinator.

COOL WEB RESOURCE ON PRAYING FOR UNREACHED PEOPLES
Looking for that perfect web resource for praying for the least reached? Don’t pass over http://www.calebproject.org/ptw3/index.html. Originally written up for Praying Through the Window III this past October, this 31-day summary can now be applied anytime you please! It’s got pictures, it’s concise, it’s well organized, and it’s easy to apply on a daily basis throughout the year as a rotating prayer resource!!! Check it out — it’s great!

————————————–

FIRST IT WAS JUNO… NOW IT’S FREE FULL INTERNET
Pete Holzmann spent the past few days at Comdex and wrote us with this report: “Do you like having free email in the USA, using the Juno system? How about basically free Internet access? For a one-time $90 charge (30 day money-back guarantee) you can have up to 56kbps (US Robotics X2) access from over 1000 cities in the USA. Now you can, using Freeweb and their version of the Netscape browser, with a small advertisement built in, for free email, web access, etc. See http://www.freewwweb.com for more info, or call 203/790-4600.” Pete added a warning: “The dial-in network is still being built, so many areas do not have access yet.” Since this is a new resource, we’d love to hear back how it works for you.

GLOSSARY OF SYMBOLS… FOR NEW BRIGADA USERS
This week I received a fairly pointed message criticizing all the cryptic symbols in Brigada Today. Gulp. The reader wrote, “I have included a sample of something that made no sense to me.” In the sample were a bunch of email shorthand notes… :-) Sorry about that. So this week we’re including a “key” to the confusion!!! Again, apologies to new users:

Did we omit anything?

LEARN TO WRITE LIKE A PRO!
… and catch winter in Florida while you’re at it! :-) The Florida Christian Writers Conference is set for January 29 to February 2 1998. This carefully tailored conference offers instruction and marketing opportunities to writers at different levels-beginning, intermediate, advanced, and professional. Writers attend continuing classes and elective workshops, interact one-on-one with editors, and “talk shop” with fellow writers. The conference is designed to be inspirational, instructive, and provide marketing opportunities. The faculty is asked to review manuscripts, make suggestions regarding marketability, and give brief written critiques. The faculty and staff are available to registrants throughout the conference, including meals, to provide a warm non-threatening environment. Attendance is usually 175-200 with a faculty of 30-35 made up of freelance writers, editors and publishers, 40-48 workshops and 6 continuing classes. Browse http://www.kipertek.com/writer/ for more information, or email writeratdigitaldotnet. Phone: 407-269-6702, Fax: 407-383-1741, or write to: Billie Wilson, FCWC, 2600 Park Avenue, Titusville, FL 32780.

WANTED: CONTEXTUALIZED NATIVE AMERICAN TOOLS
Here’s a guy thirsting for a contextualized approach to reaching Native Americans. He writes, “As a point of reference, we’ve come up with 7 categories of connecting points between Native Indian history and culture and Bible history and culture. … We have taught the first 20 lessons, promoting this with—‘Now you can learn Native Indian identity and the Bible at the same time!’ Our question is— is there anyone out there who’s aware of anything in print on this topic already? And does anyone have any wisdom you could pass along to this committee, on developing a contextualized theology for Native Indian peoples?” If you’ve got a strategy or you’re working on it, write Dan Woodard at 103535dot3026atcompuservedotcom in Canada and he’ll send us a summary of your inputs in a couple of weeks. Thanks Dan!

BRIGADA-PEOPLES MOVING!
I continue to be impressed by Dave Nesmith and the whole Brigada-peoples crew… currently a pack of some 300+ users committed to helping you find information about unreached peoples. (To subscribe, send email to hubatxcdotorg with only the words,
subscribe brigada-peoples

in the text.) And along the way, David continues to help everybody be all the more effective at his or her job. For example, this past week he asked subscribers to avoid subject lines like “Info request,” “I have a question,” “Information please,” and “Help!” Now I had never thought about it before, but he’s right!!! He wrote, “When users scan the mail folder listing they are looking for something that will identify the request. Avoid like the plague. Many users, up to here with email traffic, will simply delete a NO SUBJECT, thinking, perhaps, ‘If the originator did not care enough to put in a subject line then it isn’t worth my time to read it.’ If your emailer has a problem with subject lines, then fix it or else get a new emailer.” He added, “Please DO always provide a link between your response and the query to which you are responding. It is very frustrating to see a message begin with something like this: Hi there Joe, I think the answer to your problem is………………. Who is Joe? What is the problem? If you do quote the inquiry message, DO NOT include the entire message, only enough of it to provide a link.” Now there’s a moderator who is not only in touch with his subject but also with how to approach it!!! Thanks for a great job, David!

————————————–

JOIN A WORLDWIDE PRAYER MOVEMENT DURING RAMADAN!
Arab World Ministries is planning to send out a daily e-mail prayer request during Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting (December 31-January 29). Would you like to receive these daily requests to help you pray for Muslim converts and followers of Islam during that time? Send an email to: majordomoatgospelcomdotnet. In the body of the message type this text only:
subscribe awm-ramadan

The subject of the message does not matter.

YES VIRGINIA, THERE IS A 30-DAY MUSLIM PRAYER FOCUS IN RUSSIAN!
Thanks to Kim who wrote this past week to let us know that the 30-Day Muslim prayer focus is indeed available in Russian ( see Oct. 31st Brigada Today for the original request)! She added, “The 30 Days prayer guide is available in 30 languages!! English, Bengali, Chinese, Czech, Arabic, Finish, French, German, Hindi, Marathi, Telegu, Tamil, Indonesian, Italien, Japanese, Kazak, Swahili, Korean, Malay, Spanish, Dutch, Norwegian, Danish, Polish, Russian, Swedish, Turkish, Afrikaans, Portuguese, and Simple English. In addition, a Children’s edition and an Internet edition is also available.” For more information, write 71233dot1475atcompuservedotcom. Great answer, Kim!!!

MORE ON THE WORLD CHRISTIAN CONFERENCE
A “World Christian Conference” is scheduled for Feb. 13-16, 1998 at Santa Cruz, CA. The conference started back in 1985 as the World Christian Conference for the Chinese Graduates (WCCCG) when its founders saw the need to bring the Chinese churches together to challenge them to respond to the needs of the world. Since 1985, brother and sisters, primarily from Chinese churches on the West Coast, have come together in a forum where biblical teaching is given, models and examples are presented, and practical issues are discussed. By God’s grace, many alumni of the World Christian Conference have moved into various ministries, locally and abroad. Others continue to live out their World Christian calling and spread the World Christian vision here in North America. To learn more, contact Derrick Tan CyTanatjunodotcom or browse http://www.octlab.com/wcc98 (currently under construction).

ARE THERE REALLY CHURCHES OUT THERE GIVING 10% OR MORE TO MISSIONS?
If so, Grace would like to know!!! She asked this week if we could somehow locate any true stories of churches that are actually giving 10% or more of their finances to missions and, if so, she’d like to hear what happened as a result. “I’ve heard that some churches who were broke before, and then tried tithing as a church, suddenly began to have more than they needed, etc. I’ve heard numerous stories like this, but I don’t have any specific facts… So, I would like to request that any churches or people who know of churches and have the facts, would send me their story and/or the name and address/contact info of the person I could contact about getting this kind of information. Grace Wiebe: gracewatidmaildotcom. We’ll ask for a compilation or summary report, okay Grace? Thanks!

————————————–

PGP UPDATE
Rod, our PGP guy, wrote this past week, “Good news for folks outside of USA and Canada… finally! PGP 5.0i for Windows 95/NT has been released! http://www.pgpi.com/ is the place to go for more info. Note: This is the only legally exported international version of PGP 5.0, i.e. via scanned and OCRed source code.” Thanks Rod!

SING A SONG OF MISSIONS…
The AD2000 Worship & Arts Network is in the process of compiling a Missions/Worship Songbook (missions songs and worship songs with a missions emphasis) which will hopefully become a wonderful resource for missions-minded folks around the world (so far only in English-speaking countries). They’re looking for your suggestions re: which songs to include. Just write Grace Wiebe at gracewatidmaildotcom or snail mail her at 6240 London Rd., Richmond, BC, V7E 3S4 Canada (or fax: 604-275-7785) by the end of December. (Materials arriving after Dec. 31 might be included in a future edition.) The information requested:

1. the name of the song
2. the name of the songwriter/s
3. the title of the tape/CD, etc. it’s on (if it is)
4. a leadsheet which includes the words/chords, etc.
5. whether it’s copywritten or not
6. if possible, contact info so that we can contact the songwriters, etc. for permission to use their song/s
7. if possible, perhaps the song can be sent on an inexpensive cassette (if it’s not copywritten)

The Network is also looking for shorter choruses that also have good translations in other languages, or non-English songs that have good English translations. They’re hoping to put together 25-40 songs (or more, depending on the response) that will be useful to churches, missions organizations, university Christian fellowships, etc.

HABLA ESPAÑOL?
If you don’t know what that means, CIE (Centro de Idioma Español) offers you the solution. CIE’s unique approach to Spanish language acquisition through cultural integration and ministry participation will equip you with the most important key to opening the hearts of the Spanish speaking, along with an understanding of mission work in Latin America. CIE offers programs at various levels from one month to one year. The center is located five minutes from the border of El Paso, Texas in Juarez, Mexico, where you will encounter the warmth of the Mexican people and their culture. Our native teaching staff brings more than 20 years of experience in training missionaries for Latin America. For more information, contact Ike at cmfmexicoatcompuservedotcom or write to CIE, P.O. Box 26998, El Paso, TX 79926-6998; Tel/Fax (in Mexico) 52-16-11-36-20.

MORE INFO ON MORMON VIDEO
If you were trying to hunt down that video on Mormonism, we’ve heard some more information. Word on the street is that the title is “The Mormon Puzzle.” It was produced by the Interfaith Witness Department of the North American Mission Board. Their address is 4200 North Point Parkway, Alpharetta, GA 30022-4176. The 800 number for orders is 800-634-2462. Apparently it’s 56 minutes (not 40), and it features candid interviews with Mormon leaders. It has been very well received! Thanks for the tip, Mark!

CORRECTION: CLICK THOSE HEELS!!!
Sorry about last week… when I said we could now “click those heals!” [sic] (it really was sick!!!), I really meant, “click those heels!” :-) Thanks Lionel! But the intent of the message remains just as promising: beginning next issue of Brigada Today, Don and Judy Pratt, of Topeka, KS, will be taking on Customer Relations for Brigada! We’re very grateful for their partnership!!! (Well — I don’t know about you but I’m very grateful for their partnership! :-))

TRYING TO TRACK DOWN THAT VIDEO ON MORMONISM???
It’s apparently about 40 minutes in length and includes an overview of Mormon doctrine, as well as how to witness to Mormons worldwide. You could try calling (800) 866-3621 or writing Customer Services, Foreign Mission Board, PO Box 6767, Richmond, Virginia, VA 23230-0767, USA. It’s supposed to be hot!

WANT TO LEARN TO TYPE IN OTHER LANGUAGES?
Well now, at least your computer can display the fonts. (Learning to type the words will have to be up to you! :-) ) Apparently you have to visit ftp://ftp.dayspring.com/fonts to

1. the actual font files (for example Central Asian Courier, Arial and Times)
2. Microsoft Multiboot Utility (language.exe)
3. the keyboard drivers for WIN95.

With those three parts, you’re on! Thanks to Jane and all her colleagues in Spillern who are helping with this!

CHRISTMAS TIME IN THE TROPICS
Maybe you know someone who, this Christmas season, is laboring away in the tropics, away from family back home. Searching for just the right gift? Here’s one idea. A phone card! I’m talking about the limited kind… good for, say, 30 minutes in your home country. That ought to give them at least a 10-minute call home to grandparents or uncles or whoever. Check to be sure such phone cards are internationally transferable (seldom, in fact) — and if they’re not, mail the phone card to the grandparent as a gift to the on-site worker in the tropic. It’ll still carry just as much meaning. Europe has had these cards for years, and only recently have we started seeing the spring up in any quantities in the USA. But now they’re everywhere — at every gas station, Wal-Mart, and even the Mom-and-Pop stores. So . . . this Christmas, give the gift that carries more meaning than a tin of popcorn could ever tackle — put a missionary in touch with those significant others, voice-to-voice. God bless your day!

CLICK THOSE HEALS… AND YOU’VE GOT KANSAS!!!
God has heard my cry!!! :-) Last week we appealed for a new Brigada Customer Relations Manager and out of the plains of Kansas He has raised up Don & Judy Pratt as the answer to my prayers! Don and Judy are actively involved in Town & Country Christian Church of Topeka, which has just adopted a city in Mainland China. They serve on their church’s PACE Project team as Information Specialists to gather Internet research and to network with others involved in similar projects. Already in the past 5 days, they’ve gone through 3 phases of training to become the new Brigada Customer Relations specialists… and are currently in their 4th phase. Within a week, Lord willing, they’ll be up and running! Please join me in thanking God for their willingness to serve in this way, totally voluntarily, for the Cause of the King! Whew!!!! God be praised! :-) And thanks to Town & Country for sharing their talents with the world!

TO GET THE MOST FROM BRIGADA TODAY …
To get the most from Brigada Today, please realize that we’re a volunteer-based service. Unfortunately, we aren’t a big-time office with lots of free time to answer search requests that users could have executed if they took the time on their own. In one recent piece of email, being forwarded around the Net, users are urged to “write for more information about…” this or that. Although we try to take action on every single piece of email we receive, at the rate it’s going, there will definitely come a day when that’s simply impossible! You can help! First, if you’re referring someone to a resource featured in Brigada Today, refer them to the resource email address or web site. Please don’t simply suggest they “contact Brigada for more info.” Second, even if you don’t remember the related address or URL — but have web access — you can use our search engine (thanks Bob!) all by yourself at http://www.brigada.org to search all 320,114 words of Brigada weekly resources published weekly since Feb. 18th, 1995. So you can help the effort by trying first to find the resource on the Brigada web site… rather than simply writing us and asking us to retrieve it for you. Finally, in all cases, even if you do have to “write Brigada” for more information (and we will try to help, especially if we know you’ve tried to find it first :-)), please write owner-brigadaatbrigadadotorg. Thanks for being “net-savvy” and courteous!!!!

OCTOBER IS GONE, BUT PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW ISN’T!
Just when you thought Praying through the Window III was outa’ here, Caleb Project has made available a new revision of its 1993 prayer guide with an up-to-date Praying Through the Countries of the 10/40 Window prayer guide ($6 plus shipping and handling). In addition to the statistics and information on 64 countries in the 10/40 Window, there is a resource section called “Pray Forth the Kingdom: 50 Ways You Can Pray Through the Window” by Shane Bennett. To order write to infoatcprojectdotcom. (They’ll fill you in on how you can fax in your order, or, if you prefer, use PGP to encrypt your credit card info. on the Net!) Also, check out their 1998 Children of the Window calendar, still available for just $9.95!

————————————–

DON’T FORGET TO ACCESS US GOVERNMENT’S “COUNTRY STUDIES”
Check ’em out at http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/cshome.html if you’ve never looked before. Thanks for the tip, Paul and Karen!

EVER WISH YOU COULD FIND AN OUT-OF-PRINT COPY OF DEEP-SEA CANOE?
Well wish no more, because it’s out of print no more! Allan Tippett’s book, The Deep-Sea Canoe, which was out of print (William Carey Library) is now back in print (Christian Books Melanesia and Christian Leaders’ Training College). This book tells the story of the spread of the Gospel by South Pacific Island Missionaries in the 1800s. According to one Brigada participant, “It is an excellent missions book.” More information can be obtained from CLTCatmafdotorg.

————————————–

MAYBE BURPING IS CULTURALLY ACCEPTABLE… IN JAPAN AND BRIGADA!
Thanks to those who expressed appreciation for learning more about the celebration in the Philippines (our “burp” last week!). One Brigada participant wrote, “…I loved getting that info … about their anniversary. Didn’t even realize it was a goof! Thanks for burping! Judy.” Judy wasn’t the only one! Just remember that if you were wanting more information about the event, geniemacati-maniladotcomdotph should be able to supply you with all the details. (Also, we apologize if it sounded as though we were somehow blaming the sender of the news item for the mistake. We never intended to send that signal and apologize if we came across that way. The folks at MAFxc are clueless as to why her message popped through… but they take full responsibility for the fact that it happened. It wasn’t her fault. All we meant to say was that these kinds of messages would probably best be sent to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg instead of to , just in case another “burp” escapes the filters in the future.)

Have you browsed CHRISTIAN DAILY NEWS at http://www.christiandailynews.org> CHRISTIAN DAILY NEWS contains news affecting Christians worldwide including in-depth information on world issues, public policy, revivals and renewal, and church news. MORE ON “WHERE TO BUY”
Are you still trying to find the best prices (on everything)??? Check out Computer ESP, which gives a comparative list of equipment with actual “Street” Prices See http://www.uvision.com/, “The Guide To Where To Buy over 100,000 Computer Products. ComputerESP scans and compares over a million prices from major computer cyberstores in Canada and US and updates over 100,000 prices a day on average. Search by keyword or browse by category. Also, David suggests that auctions can sometimes give great buys. For a major list of auctions see: http://www.usaweb.com/auction.html. Two common computer auctions are: Onsale at: http://www.onsale.com/ and AuctionX at http://www.auctionx.com/. Prices are typically best on a public holiday, good on Tuesday or Wednesday, and worst over the weekend. Thanks David!

IF YOU CHOOSE TO SEND IN A RESOURCE TO BRIGADA TODAY…
You can make our job lots easier.

First, news contributors and others should write to either <owner-brigadaatbrigadadotorg> [for administrative or problem requests] or to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg to contribute something to Brigada Today. (In other words, please don’t assume you can use as an address for Doug Lucas (or others who volunteer to make Brigada possible).)

Secondly, please make the items brief — 10 lines max, if possible. Please do not subscribe us to lists or simply cc: us on your press releases. If you’d like to contribute something, please get to know the nature of Brigada Today items… paragraphs not 3 page news releases.

Third, please enclose and in pointy braces.

Fourth, if possible, don’t use 1st person in your item — use 3rd person instead: “We hope to offer such and such” should instead be “Missionary Books hopes to offer such and such.”

Thanks — we appreciate your help in bringing the very best resources and news — in the very best way possible — to the 6500 Brigada Today participants!

MISSION PASTORS UNITE!
In association with ACMC, a new mission enterprise is on the way to launch. For several years, several mission’s pastors across the country have being slowing etching out a new organization called The National Association of Mission Pastors (NAMP). We are pleased to announce the first meeting of the new organization will be hosted by the ACMC during their national conference in June 1998! Convened by Dr Sam Earp, mission pastor at South Valley Christian Church, 590 Shawnee Lane, San Jose, Ca 95123, NAMP seeks to assist in the personal and professional development of mission pastors who serve the local church. ACMC will have an ongoing sponsoring relationship with NAMP and the two independent organization anticipate a dramatic impact for mission pastors in the future. For additional information, contact Dr Sam Earp at BuntlineatAOLdotCom or at the above address. Or contact Rev David Meade at the ACMC office in Atlanta, Georgia.

HOW TO LEARN ABOUT MOST ANYTHING
http://www.ebig.com, that’s how. Basically the editors of the Encyclopedia Britannica have done all the WWW searching for you at this site. The editors of EB evaluated 65,000 WWW sites and divided them into topics and subtopics. Apparently they took only authoritative, trustworthy and high-quality sites on each topic, rating them from 3 stars (Best of the Web) to no stars (Noteworthy). Even the no stars are good sites in their opinion. This site can be very useful in addition to standard WWW search engines. (Hats off to Dan at the AD2000 International Office!)

————————————–

URGENT MESSAGE ABOUT “JOIN THE CREW”
If you receive a message about “Join the Crew” (a new email virus), just trash it. It’s all myth. You can’t get a virus by reading ASCII email. However, you might get a virus by opening up an executable that someone sends you as an attachment. So – please don’t relay attached executable files unless the recipient requests you do so. As a matter of course, I automatically delete all attached executables without opening them — unless I specifically know the nature of the file and check it first with Norton Antivirus. Again — you can’t get a virus by reading ASCII email. In these and all other cases, check out “urban legends” at Symantec’s antivirus page, which begins at http://www.symantec.com.

HOW TO GET YOUR CONGREGATION INVOLVED IN MISSIONS
ACMC has just released a new workbook entitled, How to Get Your Congregation Involved in Missions, by David Mays. This easy-to-use manual includes bullet lists and worksheets for your mission leadership team. Topics include applying the principles from your most effective church programs, promoting and communicating in today’s world, integrating missions throughout the church, and exploring creative possibilities for individual involvement. The book is available from ACMC-ChurchMart for $6.25. Call 1-800-798-ACMC.

GERMAN CONGREGATIONS ADOPT UNREACHED PEOPLES
Participants at the third Mission 2000 conference, held on the premises of YWAM Bispingen, Germany, adopted 42 unreached people groups. At the end of the conference, a short-term team was sent to one of the world’s most isolated people groups, with the eventual goal of helping to establish a church among them. The conference was jointly organized by AIMS-Germany in partnership with a branch of YWAM North Germany. To learn more about this conference and how unreached people groups were adopted there, contact the Association of International Mission Services (AIMS) at aimsataims-usadotorg or call (757)-579-5850.”

INFO ON REACHING THE WORLD CUP
Interested in helping reach those traveling to France for the World Cup? One Brigada participant, John McVay, just wrote, “Greetings from Paris, France, and the Centre Evangelique conference held 17-18 November. While there, I learned about outreach plans for “Coupe De Monde” 10 June – 12 July 1998. French churches and missions are working together under the coordination of Sport & Faith’s director Gerard Lanniee (a staffer with the French Campus Crusade for Christ). He has prepared an excellent 24 page presentation booklet (in French) that includes the contact info, including e-mail addresses, of 11 mission bases in France that are mobilizing for this outreach. Another nine overseas missions are organizing groups from Canada, USA, Great Britain, Germany, Spain, South Africa, Czechoslovakia and many other countries. Planned activities include soccer matches with Christian teams, street ministry with mime and puppets, book stands, concerts, distribution of the Jesus film, New Testaments for sports people, visitation to prisons and hospitals. And for those who may have missed the Brigada passion for soccer, Doug’s not the only enthusiast. This is an Olympic-sized event – with 32 countries participating in 64 matches over 33 days in 10 different French cities. For info e-mail sportfoiataoldotcom.”

(Ed. Note: Somehow I believe that eventually St. Peter will require all entrants into Heaven to love soccer. Okay — maybe I’m exaggerating a little. :-) O)

MOBILIZERS AT TEAM EXPANSION DEDICATE NEW BUILDING TO UNREACHED
This past Saturday, Team Expansion held an Open House and Dedication for “The Hopewell House,” their new building at 3700 Hopewell Rd., Louisville, KY 40299. Zillions of people stopped by (… well……. maybe not zillions but lots! :-)) to learn more about how Team Expansion tries to help put churches and would-be on-site team workers in touch with unreached people groups and their needs worldwide. If you’d like to pray about adopting a people group, sending a team of full-time on-site workers to reach them, and making an eternal difference in their lives, write teamexpansionatxcdotorg for more information. Two full-time PACE Project specialists in the Mobilization Department (Todd and Carole) are eager to help you with your inquiry!

PARDON OUR BURP!
Looks like another message burped through the gateway into the full Brigada mailing list Sunday morning (Eastern Time). (Some… maybe all the Brigada mailing list rec’d a copy.) It gave information about a Philippine mission that was celebrating a 90-year anniversary. Normally, messages sent to bounce to the moderator — and most are then forwarded to for consideration in a future edition of Brigada Today. However, once in a blue moon O (which hung high over the sky on Sunday, apparently :-)), such a message somehow burps out onto the mailing list in all its glory. Please forgive any inconvenience. We’ll ask MAFxc to check and re-check all their safeguards and, as for all of us on the list, let’s just realize that we’re navigating uncharted waters — and that MAFxc is learning from the “Brigada experiment!” To our knowledge, they don’t have any other mailing list with 6500 subscribers… not that size should matter in those kinds of safeguards. And in the end, the truth is, judging from the fact that literally hundreds of messages are sent to that address in a given week, is it any wonder that one might sneak by in a “blue moon???” O By the way, you could reduce the chance of slippage all the more if you sent administrative items to and news items to . But please — don’t subscribe us to any mailing lists! Any contributions should be custom-prepared for the Brigada Today mailing and should not simply be carbon copies of tons of pages of your favorite announcements! :-) We see plenty of those. :-)

————————————–

URGENT – 24-HOUR RESPONSE TIME REQUESTED!
Thanks loads to Revis Ann Massey, Brigada’s Customer Service Manager since about December, 1995!! For two years she has served willingly and without a break! Well — she needs one! And she’s leaving the country to get it! :-) Tuesday — yes… in 36 hours — she leaves for language school in Costa Rica, where she’ll be dedicating herself totally to Spanish, in preparation for all the more church-planting with Team Expansion’s InterAmerican Team in Miami. So — EMERGENCY!!!!! — :-) — We need a new Interim Brigada Customer Service Manager until March, ’98 (when she’s coming back to the USA and will reassume the role — Thanks Revis Ann!!!) The only requirements are: receive zillions of email requests per day, process millions of them, ditch the rest. :-) Like all Brigada roles, it’s volunteer . . . and free… and there’s very little glitz and glamour… but it’s a great opportunity for someone to serve… Experience with MAFxc email conferences preferred but not required (we’ll train you if you’re a willing worker!) Estimated time required??? Maybe an average of one hour per day… Must be a MAFxc member. If you’re not a MAFxc member already, but are willing to work hard, Brigada will pay the $52 to buy your membership. So — any takers? If so, answer now. Gulp. Come Monday night (24 hours!), Doug will be switching them all his way and with his mission’s board meeting coming up on Friday and an endless loop of responsibilities coming after that, … Helllllllllllpppppppp! :-) Don’t look for many answers to Brigada mail ’til March… :-) unless someone pitches in! :-) Oh — and Revis Ann — Suerte con el espanol! Gracias por la ayuda estos dos anos pasados!

ALL AROUND THE WORLD, NIGHT OR DAY, LISTEN TO THE LORD
One Brigada participant reminded us this past week that radio waves are beaming Bible broadcasts to the far-flung corners of the earth, 24 hours per day. To get up to date schedules for your particular area, you used to have to write stations in faraway lands and send self-addressed, self-stamped envelopes. Those were the days. What a hassle. Nowadays, just open your web browser and check out:

GLOBAL GLIMPSE OF A HAUNTING REALITY
Missionaries Dave Mankins, Rick Tenenoff, and Mark Rich have been held hostage in Colombia for almost five years now. On January 31, 1993, armed Colombian guerrillas entered the small village where these men worked, raided their homes and took the men back across the border into Colombia. The families, including seven children, returned home to the US. Now the youngest child is 5 and the oldest is 28. The youngest four children cannot remember their daddies. At a recent summit the guerrilla group denied having the men.

SEARCH FOR BURIED WEB TREASURE
Have you noticed the trend on the web lately? It would be hard to miss it. More, more and MORE !!! There’s so much, it’s hard to find everything you’re looking for, in fact! So, where do you start? The best place to begin are search pages… and not necessarily the one that’s built into the browser you use — the one that pops up when you hit “search” on your tool bar! PC Magazine just did a study and found incredibly differing results, depending on which search engine you used for gold-mining on the web. Their findings? They might surprise you. For surgical precision — finding the exact page you need — forget the famous pages like Lycos, Excite, and Yahoo (though they liked Yahoo for an all-purpose page). Instead, turn to HotBot! http://www.hotbot.com Try it. You’ll probably love it. If it’s a person you’re searching for, try http://www.four11.com. But if you’re searching for a business, try http://www.bigbook.com. For Usenet news, try http://www.dejanews.com. And for “metasearches” (complex language searching that utilizes dynamic language at multiple search sites), jump to http://www.metacrawler.com or, for advanced queries, try your luck with http://www.designlab.ukans.edu/profusion/. Those are the PC Magazine Editors’ Choices (Dec. 2, ’97 edition). I’d say a hearty amen! The differences are astounding. Try them out! At least bookmark them now… so when you need to search later you can try them out.

WHAT WILL YOUR HOUSE-GUEST SEE?
I spoke in Chicago last week. And I tried my best to bless the church… but it was probably I that received the bigger blessing. The married couple which housed me was an exceptional life-lesson in parenthood. They had raised their 3 daughters in a kind of “old-fashioned” way. For example, if someone wanted to take one of their daughters out on a date, he first had to come to the house and have dinner with the Dad and Mom. If he didn’t “pass the test,” no dice! :-) Maybe Father really does know best. All three daughters have married marvelous Christian men, and now the whole extended family has lunch together every Sunday after church — with zillions of grandkids running between everyone’s legs! They all went camping together this past summer . . . and even built a big screen house for the whole clan to picnic under. Dobson would have been envious. :-) So — what makes a successful family? Gary and Laretta found the secret.

First, they never gave up. Every single morning they did Bible devotions together as a family. And even when things got hectic in high school, they never let schedules squeeze it out. (Our family is still on track in reading a chapter per night together, but our kids are only 11 and 8; I realize the bigger battles probably lie ahead in high school years. But at least we’re in the habit now! Even when I’m overseas or out of town, we still read the same chapters together each night to stay “in sync” — and I try to call them each night from wherever I am in the world, just to check in and see how they’re doing. Not always possible.. but most of the time it works.)

But second, Gary and Laretta kept hold of their responsibility as parents. They didn’t release their kids to the world. If you’ve been letting go, it won’t come over night to pull them back out of the fire. It’ll take work. But it’s apparently worth the effort. Now that Gary and Laretta are grandparents, you can see the fruit of their work!

Finally, they obtained good resources and helps. As for Gary, he happens to be a top guy at Gothard’s Institute of Basic Life Principles. So he’s actually using the materials he’s helping develop. (But ya know what? They apparently work! For an example of what they’ve done, see http://www.characterlink.net or call 630-323-9800. If you don’t have access to the web, write Gary at gnfatiblpdotorg, thank him for being a good dad all these years, tell him you read about him in Brigada Today, and ask him to forward your note to someone who can send him a catalogue. :-) I suppose you’re already plugged into Dobson, or Promise-Keepers or someone … but the key is to get some material and use it.

If the family is indeed the smallest fighting unit in God’s army, then, if the family crumbles, the entire army crumbles. It’ll behoove us to put some time in, then, eh? :-)

God bless your week.

Doug

FIRST THE AMDO, NOW THE MARATHA!
These last two weekends, I’ve led 3-day mission rallies in Illinois. Both weekends, I’ve used the Amdo video (previously described in Brigada Today) and over and over again, I’m convinced that it’s one of the most powerful tools for helping people see a desperate need from one sample people group. From that, I extrapolate that this is just one of some 1800-2000 groups that need to be contacted with the love of Christ. Well now, Kingdom Building Ministries has made it easy to feature another group — the Maratha. It’s the second in a series of people specific prayer mobilization videos that KBM has put together. This twelve minute, broadcast quality video was shot on location in Maharashtra, India last summer. The fast moving video and it’s powerful images will capture your heart and expand your understanding of who the Maratha are, what Hindu people believe, how their lives are affected by the “caste system” and how you can be involved as an intercessor to set them free! This could be the perfect addition to your monthly missions meeting or fall conference. The regular price on this video is $12.00 plus $3.00 shipping. Steve Moore, himself a regular Brigada Today reader, wrote this past week, “I would be happy to offer Brigada subscribers a discounted price of $10.00 plus the $3.00 shipping (same deal we offered on the Amdo video).” I’d say run don’t walk to grab your checkbook and invest in this teaching/prayer tool. For more info, write laborersatkbmdotorg, tel. 303-745-8191, Fax 303-745-4196. Steve adds, “The Maratha People Resource Network formation meeting is scheduled for January 16-18, 1998 and will be hosted by the Hamburg Wesleyan Church (one of the key adopting churches who participated in the JP2K team this past summer among the Maratha). Our goal is to bring churches who are interested in or have adopted the Maratha people into formal relationship with each other, along with agencies who are targeting them.” Those interested in attending should contact Steve Moore, of Kingdom Building Ministries, smooreatkbmdotorg, for more information. These are the kinds of meetings we need gathering in places all around the globe for peoples all around the world! Bravo KBM . . . and bravo Steve. Thanks for giving Brigada participants a bit of extra price shaving to help them afford this new tool. Bravo.

THE PTW III DUST IS SETTLING – WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU???
Now that the month of October, ’97, is history, what will be next for you and your church or agency? The truth is — the answer to that question is the real determinant to how effective Praying Through the Window III becomes for the good of the globe. Now here’s a novel thought: Have you considered “adopting” an unreached people? Just what would that mean for you? How would one go about that? How have other churches managed to pull it off? Is it right for your church? Good questions. The first of December you’ll have some answers in the form of a new video: Ordinary People/Extraordinary Love being co-produced by AD2000 & Caleb Project. (The magic of the Carltons — the same people who produced Light the Window for PTW II in ’95 and To the Ends of the Earth in ’96.) Watch for more information about this exciting video in next week’s Brigada Today. And this is one you’ll want to get for your next mission rally!

WEB-WATCH
Thanks to Paul for reminding us of the USA’s country studies. He writes, “They were written with both the State Department and the U.S. military in mind. In so doing, they assembled groups of sociologists, historians, economists, etc. They are very informative — packed with a ton of info on each country. At this point, most of the studies do not have graphics, but they are being added a little at a time. The full text is on-line. Thanks again, Paul. The URL is http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/cshome.html. (Paul adds, “I don’t know why, but many Western European countries are not listed.”)

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM OUT OF THIS WORLD
This past week, representatives of SAT-7 Partner Agencies met together in Cyprus to plan future broadcast strategies for North Africa and Arabic-speaking peoples. Broadcasting will be increased to a total of 7.5 hours per week from 1st November 1997, using two satellites. The normal Friday broadcasts will now be complemented by a 2.5 hour transmission on Sundays. “Arabic language Christian television is still in its early stages of development but we have already pioneered some very creative thinking”, commented one delegate. “SAT-7 presents the greatest opportunity, since the time of St Paul, for the churches of the region to witness to their faith.”

FROM THE-WORD-ON-THE-STREET DEPARTMENT
The word on the street is that some top notch producers have taken up the Chariots of Fire dream and are turning it into a new film to be titled, Complete Surrender. (You remember Chariots of Fire . . . . dah dah dah-dah daaaaahhhh daaaaahhh [chu-chu-chu-chu-chu-] dah dah dah-dah daahhhhhh — where’s that Internet audio channel when I need it! :-)) It was all about Eric Liddell, a gentle, good-humored Scotsman, a very ordinary man, made great not by athletic brilliance, which he considered a gift from God, but by his battle for true integrity. And it was all about his refusal to run on a Sunday in the heats of the 100 meters in the 1924 Paris Olympics. It was about how that event carried over to prepare him for real life. The few simple words on screen at the end of the film – “Eric Liddell, missionary, died in occupied China at the end of World War II. All of Scotland mourned” – open the way to the real story, of a life lived to the full, taken to extremes of courage, personal conflict and finally total submission to the will of God. Yikes. No wonder Chariots won an Academy Award. It’s hard not to say something worthwhile when you start with material like that! So — in the new film, rumor has it that screenwriters will tell the story of Eric Liddell’s life from the moment he was hurled into the limelight by his unexpected victory in the Olympic 400 meters in 1924 until his death in obscurity in a Japanese internment camp in 1945. It will tell of an ordinary man with the world at his feet, who has the opportunity to fulfil his potential and become one of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen. It is the story of a man who surrenders it all for what seems an absurd quest – to go and teach children in China. Word has it that the film will be released in English and dubbed into Mandarin, Spanish and Portuguese. You’ll most likely hear about it if and when it happens — but you might want to utter a prayer for it to really happen, because word on the street is that it’ll cost a whoppin’ $40 million bucks to produce. Yikes. We’ll keep you informed.

MORE ON COOL [COOL] CLEAR [CLEAR] WATER [WAAHHHH-TER]
You can also order water filters from TealBrookataoldotcom with web page http://www.sim.org/biz/tealbrook, fax 612/480-8786 in Hastings, MN (800/222-6614 toll-free in the USA or using an Internet phone system). The latest recommended filter seems to be the Sweetwater Guardian Plus, which filters out cryptosporidia, giardia and bacteria, and sediments, as the others do, plus (if you can believe it) even viruses like hepatitis! For 6 years, I’ve been using a Katadyn Pocket Filter, but this Guardian Plus thing has me very interested. Sells for $80 (about 1/3 the cost of the Katadyn), can be field-cleaned, and has refills for $25. Weighs 11 oz and puts out a liter a minute. If all of that is really true, it would be just what the doctor ordered for the typical mission trip or even a summer-long intern or short-termer. You can order these at http://www.rei.com on their secure web page or email them at serviceatreidotcom (but remember not to send your credit cared through email unless you encrypt it) or just call toll-free at 800/426-4840 (in the USA or on a web phone), FAX at 206/891-2523 (or 206/863-5550). Thanks to David for the great info.

————————————–

CAN YOU PICTURE YOURSELF USING THESE STORY PICTURES IN YOUR LANGUAGE?
Want to teach the Bible through special picture sets? Evidently, a printing group in the Philippines is trying to put together a large press run of the Chronological Bible Story Pictures. For sets of 500 or more, special sets could be printed with your agency’s own labels or titles, in the language you desire! But obviously, you would have to provide the translation – via hard copy and on diskette. Contact Will Gopffarth, Church Strengthening Ministries, Philippines at willgcsmatjmfdotorgdotph@internet for specific info. I bet you’d have to pay for your set of 500 — so don’t write if you’re hoping for free literature! :-)

————————————–

CALENDAR-TIME (MINUS THE SWIMSUITS)
Who wants those swimsuit calendars anyway! :-) Why not pick a calendar with a purpose! Now here’s an idea — the new 1998 Kurdish language calendar. Dazzling, full-color pictures from Kurdistan are featured on every page. Each month contains a Bible passage(not merely a verse) in BOTH Bahdini Kurdish and Sorani Kurdish. They say you have to see it to fully feel the beauty. (Okay — honesty time — I haven’t seen it, but it sounds great! :-)) And at $4 per calendar including postage, you can’t go wrong. Checks go to “Friends of the Kurds Seattle,” Box 58319, Seattle, WA 98138.

————————————–

ACMC NATIONAL CONFERENCE “IN THE WORKS”!
The ACMC National Conference for 1998 will be held June 15-18 (Monday through Thursday) at Murrieta, CA (1 hour north of San Diego). The conference is designed especially for missions professionals. Individual tracks are planned for missions pastors (ministers of missions), pastors, mission organization executives, missions professionals (including missions chair and committee persons), and missions mobilizers. Those registering will be invited to contribute in advance to the curriculum for their track of the conference. For more info, contact ACMC’s Larry Walker at 760-746-4285 or 102003dot317atcompuservedotcom.

REACH THE NATIONS AT YOUR DOORSTEP!
The Global Network of International Students (GNIS) has announced a program to reach unreached international students in your own backyard. GNIS can train your church to be a ministry ambassador to reach the international students in your city with our 1-2 day Reaching the Nations at Your Doorstep seminar. Contact them at gnisatcbndotorg or call (757)-579-5874 for a brochure.

NEED A “HOME SERVICE” CAR OR A QUICK TRUCK?
Then try Missionary Auto and Truck Supply jeffatmatsdotorg, tel. 765-965-7777, fax. 765-962-9966. They deal with the automobile companies, big auctions, etc., and they’re already at work!!! They saved me about $200 on a new van last year — and maybe they’ll save you even more!

————————————–

CHURCH ON BRADY TO SPONSOR CONFERENCE
The Church on Brady will be sponsoring a whole bunch of forums, November 13-16, 1997, called simply, “MOSAIC: The Church on Brady.” Call 213-728-4851 (Carol Davis or Paty Loera) for help.

REENTRY BIBLE STUDY READY FOR REENTRY USE!
Have you heard about “Fishers of Men”??? I hadn’t — until Donna walked in this past week to show it to me. She’s the Vice-Pres. of Missionary Care at our mission org. and she was struck by how easy it would be to plug this book into our program. I can’t figure out why we’ve never run across this one before. It’s available from Howard Lisech, 2100 Red Gate Rd., Orlando, FL 32818; tel 407-293-8666; email: HLisechataoldotcom. Designed for use over a 14-day period, it gently cushions the blow of a hard return home after missionary service — reentry and debriefing sort of thing. Lots of Bible study, lots of fill-in-the-blank and journaling. Great stuff — and affordable. $4.50 for the spiral bound book… and they apparently have two versions, one for “Overseas returnees” and one for “stateside returnees.” Write Howard for more info.

————————————–

“EXPOSITORS ARE US”
For those who have to teach or preach and take commentaries along, Jeff recently passed along the tip that Zondervan’s Expositor’s Commentary (all 12 volumes) has now been published on CD-ROM and though the normal price is $199.95, they’ve placed it at an introductory price of $79.95 for a limited time only. See http://www.zondervan.com/ebccd.htm for more details. Thanks Jeff!

COOL [COOL] CLEAR [CLEAR] WATER [WAAHHHH-TER]
Sons of the Sons of the Pioneers, be glad! You can have cool, clear water again! One Brigada participant just gave us a heads up on a new product that purifies water in a 5 step system that cleans at 1/2 gallon per minute. It connects to a kitchen faucet and with plumbing adaptation to other water supplies. The company plans to soon release one for missionaries to carry in a backpack that works on solar energy. It is reportedly not just a filter. Email Barbara Moon betterairatjunodotcom for more information. If someone is willing to try this out, we’d love to get some “user feedback” on it.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
As a result of the recent GCOWE ’97 meeting, African Christians are discovering a new passion to reach every African tribe and language group. Each AD2000 national coordinator has received a copy of the participants’ intended action steps for his or her region, and each country’s leaders have reviewed their country’s status of evangelization and their contribution more broadly to world evangelization. From all accounts these action steps are being vigorously pursued. Five or six regional meetings are being prepared to continue this unprecedented spirit of cooperation and the momentum for reaching the unreached.

UPGRADING SHOULDN’T BE SO HARD TO DO
I sure paid through the nose for my curiosity this past week. Qualcomm released a new beta of their developing product, Eudora Pro 4.0 (beta 3), and I went after it. Upon installing it, I was no longer able to open the program! I literally had to delete my Eudora application files and start reinstalling from original install diskettes (version 2.1.2). And get this — even after deleting all the application files, version 3.0 still wouldn’t install and open. I wrote the company and guess what they said: “Yes — that’s a known bug. Those with large address books can’t open the program upon install.” Yikes , Qualcomm. So who’s likely to try out a beta of a pro email client besides those who have tons of email friends to write! Duh! So why can’t software writers list those “discoveries” in a readme.txt file shipped with the program!???!!!

Then I got to thinking — how often do we allow people to believe everything will be peachy-creamy if they’ll just take such-and-such a training program or read such-and-such a book. Truth in advertising should probably extend to missions opportunities too. But we’re so persuaded that recruitment should drive our projects that I wonder if we’re sometimes reluctant to be 100% honest about how tough it really will be.

So last month, when our organization interviewed two new families for a new project we’re working with a local church to launch, we hosted a meeting with the local church missions committees and both new couples. I told them several times how difficult it would be… and I finally even [literally] got up on top the table and said… “Did I tell you this will be challenging?” (Do you think they got the point? :-)) I figured we’d never see them again. But do you think it scared them off? Not! One set of applications arrived this past week!

So — bottom line — let’s be honest, folks. Stephen Neill said (as quoted by Herbert Kane) that “Missions is so hard that it’s a miracle that it should ever even have been attempted!” Here here. This will not be an easy task.

Now… where’s that Madison Ave. recruitment brochure. :-) [As this Brigada Today “goes to press”, Version 4.0 (beta 4) has just arrived; what a sluggard. Where are my 3.0 install disks! :-) ]

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE… THROUGH THE WINDOW???
The folks from the Christian Information Network wrote this week to say, “As the month of October draws to a close, CIN would like to remind all Praying Through The Window III participants that there could be many Unreached Peoples in your own back yard. Thousands of students, refugees and professionals from the 10/40 Window live as expatriates in the countries of Western Europe and the United States. Take prayer journeys in your own city and region and pray for the Unreached Peoples living near you!

WHAT’CHA DOIN’ THIS WEEKEND? HOW ‘BOUT HEADIN’ INTO HIS HARVEST?
Global Outreach ’97 provides an opportunity for students and church members to learn about worldwide missions through plenary speakers, videos, seminars, worship, and interaction with over 40 mission agencies. This year, GO ’97 will be held October 31-November 2 near Eatonton, Georgia at Rock Eagle Conference Center. The main speakers are Richard Corley, a professor of Islam at Columbia International University who has spent most of his life ministering in the Middle East, and Chris Thomas, president of Ravencrest Bible School in Colorado (a Torchbearers missionary training school). Registration begins Friday afternoon at 2:00 with the first meal being served that evening. The conference ends after lunch on Sunday. The cost for the weekend is $60 and includes both housing and meals. For more information, call 803-735-8343 Ext. 3461 or email the info. office at serivmfatscsndotnet.

————————————–

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE?
Don’t forget to try SGM International. They’ve got Scripture booklets, leaflets, gospels and the NT readily available in 350 languages and have published Scriptures in over 800 languages? They have over 60 titles in English and each year produce over 100 new or revised titles in English and other languages. So especially if you’re from the S. Pacific, try calling 02 9899 3773, or Fax 02 9899 3773, or try mobile phone 019 922 696, or Email sgmozatfldotnetdotau.

————————————–

HAVE A LOOK AT BRIGADA-HOY
Speak Spanish?? Take a look at Brigada Hoy, by sending email to hubatxcdotorg with only this line in the text of the message:
get brigada briagda-hoy.970926

(This is a 28K file — by popular request, we’ll try to remember to tell file sizes from now on! Thanks for the idea, Jim!) You can get cleaner copies (with better formatting) by subscribing directly. Just send a follow-up note to hubatxcdotorg which reads…

That’s it! You’ll receive the Spanish version of Brigada Today as soon as it’s done each week. Pass the word to Spanish-speaking friends… and thanks to the great team of translators, working each week on these Spanish editions: Alexis Morales AMORatxcdotorg, Garmisch, Germany; in concert with Andres Escobar, Ernesto Fuentes, Fernando Soto,Gary Gardner, Miguel Rivera y Moises Riffo.

————————————–

MIXED REVIEWS ON THAT NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CD SET
For fairness sake, I should point out that not everyone is liking that set of The Complete National Geographic. One Brigada Today participant wrote this week, “The text is simply unreadable, no contrast and terribly blotchy. Squinting and staring I just about might recognize most of the body text, but captions of pics you can simply forget. The printouts are even worse, even when printed on a 600dpi HP LaserJet 5.” (Thanks for the candid review, Heinz.) I guess it all boils down to your tolerance level — how bad do you want all that information at your fingertips, and how much are you willing to work to read it! :-)

————————————–

WANT TO BE AN EFFECTIVE SENDING CHURCH?
Then take a look at The Missionary Training Service’s new booklet, “The Effective Sending Church.” This booklet will outline areas of work to be taken on by congregations (and mission agencies) interested in doing quality sending. It costs US$6.50 plus US$1.50 seamail or US$3.00 airmail from The Missionary Training Service, 18 Aston Way, Oswestry, Shropshire, SY11 2XY United Kingdom; Tel./Fax. +44 1691 653619; E-mail: coordmtsatxcdotorg; Web page: http://www.btinternet.com/~ajg/mtshome.htm. Check it out! And… thanks for your continued great ministry, Ian! (This “find” came from Jerry Witt’s halusaatwittydotcom compilation of “how to start a missions agency” item from a few weeks back. Although few of us responded to Jerry, Ian’s booklet was a great discovery from Jerry’s search.)

YOU CAN WIN MILLIONS WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR HOUSE!!
Don’t pass up this chance to pray for the millions of Muslims in the world. You can win them through prayer! This is why YWAM-Mexico is making available the Spanish prayer guide, “30 Days of Prayer for the Muslims” — and World Christian News in the USA is making available the English version. This guide is designed for intercession for the Muslim world during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Ramadan is a time during which over one billion Muslims around the world join together in fasting and reflection. During this same month (January 1-30, 1998), the Body of Christ, His Church, will join together to intercede for the salvation of these Muslims.

The publishers of the Spanish version have asked that we send orders to their postal address (they’re not accepting e-mail orders!). Don’t forget to include how many guides you would like, your name, and the address to which to send the guides. Write Center for World Missions, Juventud Con Una Misión, Apdo. 1352, Oaxaca 68000, Oaxaca, MEXICO. Prices, including postage:
1-9 guides/US$2.50 each;
10-99 guides/US$2.25 each;
100 or more/US$2 each.
Please write checks in U.S. dollars to “Youth With A Mission”.

Within México, prices including postage:
1-9 guides/N$20 each;
10-99 guides/N$17.50 each;
100 or more/N$15 each.
They want you to deposit your payment in Cuenta Maestra #5290-9340-4949-2992, sucursal #549 of Banamex, to the name of Alejandra Muñoz, then fax them a copy of the deposit slip along with your order (name, address, and number of guides desired). Fax number: 91 (951) 5-79-27.

The English version is available from WorldChristian News, P.O. Box 26479, Colorado Springs, CO 80936 USA; Tel: 1 (719) 442-6409; Fax 1 (719) 380-0936; Email: wcnatxcdotorg. (Tip: If you’d rather not order the Spanish version from Mexico, WCN has those too.) Also see WCN for an accompanying video, a prayer guide for children, and a matching poster. Write wcnatxcdotorg to get the low-down on prices and bulk orders.

HERE’S AN EXAMPLE OF A WEB SITE FOR THE UNREACHED
Check out the new Tama page at http://users.mildura.net.au/users/mjackson/Tama/Tama.htm. This is apparently developed by a Joshua Project 2000-type team (i.e., a group which did a 7-day survey among the Tama). By translating their work into a web page, they gave a lasting gift for those who want to learn more about their chosen people. If security issues can be resolved for your group, why not attempt to do the same! Check out the Tama as a case study.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ON CD – REVISITED
Just when you thought we were done talking about The Complete National Geographic, “we’re baaaaaaaaa-aaaack!” :-) This past week, growing deeper and deeper into this Bosnia research project, I decided to bite the bullet when I saw the entire 30-CD set on sale locally here at “Computer City” for $159. (Brigada price-watchers have seen it for as low as $149!) Got it home and unwrapped it, queued up the search engine for Bosnia, and — seconds later I was perusing the June 1996 article and pictures on screen. It’s worth every penny of the price if you ever have to look up pictures. And sure enough, it was good enough for my 11-year-old to skip desert for so he’d be first at the keyboard! As one reader pointed out, these are scanned pages, so you can’t “copy” and “paste” the text, and the pictures aren’t “objects”, but it’s still great if you have a big screen. Unfortunately, according to Rod, ” Woe to Mac Quadra AV users, for you’re likely to pull your hair out over crashes, at least if you’re still using system 7.5. I’m still trying to get to the bottom of this incompatibility.” We’ll hear back on that one, we hope. Several have asked how to call stores like Costco and Computer City from outside the USA. A better bet is to get on the web and do a search for “The Complete National Geographic”. I tested this approach and in moments had on-line stores that would sell me the title on-line in the right price range. Make sure you never send your credit card information over email — use only a web page with “secure sockets” layer or PGP email encryption.

WONDERING ABOUT COMIBAM? WONDER NO MORE
As you may know Hurricane Pauline struck Acapulco, Mexico, causing significant damage to the area. This is the site of COMIBAM ’97 where more than 4,000 delegates from across Latin America will be meeting October 27-31 to assess the development of Latin America’s missionary force since the historic declaration at COMIBAM ’87 in Sao Paulo, “From Mission Field to Mission Force.” This is seen as a vital congress to fully assess the emerging missionary force from Latin America to the rest of the world.

The latest word from Rudy Giron, outgoing Executive Director of COMIBAM, is:

1. The congress is going ahead as planned.

2. Please pray for the many families affected in the area. All delegates are being asked to bring to the congress something that can be donated to the people living in the area who have been displaced by Hurricane Pauline.

3. Please pray for the Mexican volunteers working to prepare for the congress.

The hurricane mainly affected the part of the mountain outside the tourist resorts. The structure needed to carry the congress is working properly with electricity, water, etc.

All the members the COMIBAM team already in Acapulco are OK and preparations are moving ahead as smoothly as possible in the prevailing circumstances. So the word at this time is that COMIBAM ’97 is DEFINITELY ON!!!!

RUSSIAN BIBLE STILL RUSHIN’
For those who wondered what happened to the Russian Bible program, you can still get the Base package of “Slavic Bible” 1.5 for Windows from ftp-server ftp.aist.net in directory pub/shareware/sbible/. The Base package is shareware and has the Russian Synodal translation of the Bible with deuterocanonical books, cross reference module, maps, photos of Holy Land and topical handbook. In addition, now the program has a two-language (Russian & English) interface, which the user can change “on fly” without restarting or dropping to DOS. Pretty slick! It also contains modules of Bible texts in Russian, Church-Slavonic, Ukrainian, Biblical Hebrew (OT), Greek (LXX & NT 4 editions), Latin, English (more 10 classic and modern versions), French, German and Italian. If you interest in this modules, please, contact with Sergej A.Fedosov, sergejatmovadotdonetskdotua. Now… where will we find something similar in Serbo-Croatian! :-)

GLOBAL GLIMPSE WITH GLOBAL HOPE
Two previously Muslim Palestinians report how God is moving in the midst of the troubles on the West Bank: “God has let a new spiritual hunger loose, and reveals himself to those who seek him,” says one of the pastors. “On average, one Muslim is coming to believe in Jesus each week. Eighty percent of the people in the Palestinian-controlled areas want peace, and only twenty percent have extreme views,” he says. A Muslim Sheikh has also become a follower of Jesus, explaining that he wants to understand the Word of God better and explain it to his “questioning brothers”.

SPECIAL TREAT FOR THOSE OUTSIDE THE USA DURING OCTOBER
You don’t have to face the perplexing question of how to deal with this weird American tradition of celebrating Halloween. What a strange nation we are, to lift up ghoulish spirits and goblins and laugh and poke fun at images of Satan’s real schemes. Our family sat down around the table last night after a visit to the local zoo last evening. Yikes. There were so many goblins, I felt queasy inside. We decided as a family that the whole holiday is nuts and we’re all moving to Bosnia by mid-month. Well, okay… maybe I’m exaggerating just a bit. But we did decide to try to forego all the scary stuff that reminds us of the devil.

WHAT KIND OF WITNESS TO THE WORLD CUP?
Here’s an invitation to compile all efforts to pour in witness at the World Cup in France, next June and July ’98. If you or your ministry has plans to witness to players or spectators who will be arriving from all points throughout the globe, send a brief description and contact information to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg. Make sure you include details if you’re looking for additional volunteers and recruits! I’d sure like to have a great ministry excuse to be in Paris in July! :-)

FINALLY!!! BRIGADA-HOY READY FOR BUSINESS!
Okay – so it took us awhile. You thought we’d keep saying, “mahn-yah-nah” forever, eh? Well maybe it wasn’t exactly “ya” but . . . at least it’s finally up and running! Subscribe today by sending an email to hubatxcdotorg with only the words,
subscribe brigada-hoy

and you’ll be ready for the first edition of Brigada-Hoy just as soon as it’s released! Be sure to spread the word to your Spanish-speaking friends! The Spanish version will contain the same resources as the English edition (so there’s no need to subscribe to both unless you just want to practice the ole’ “es-pahn-yohl” :-)), but my hunch is that it’ll also eventually feature some Latin-American specific stuff as well. You know how these Brigada things tend to grow. :-) Thanks to the entire Brigada Hoy crew, with Alex Morales amoratxcdotorg at the helm! (Boy am I glad that wait is over! :-)) Don’t forget to send your “Spanish-language specific” items directly to Alex!

WHERE IN THE WORLD DID WE GET THE NAME, “BRIGADA”???
Brigada (Bree-GAH-dah) — It goes back to 1942, when Stalin, then leader of what used to be the USSR, banished some 200,000 Crimean Tatars from their homes on the Black Sea. They were not permitted to return to their homeland en masse until the early nineties, when the Soviet Union broke apart. Unfortunately, since their homes had been confiscated by others, the Crimean Tatars were forced to rebuild entire settlements during the cold winters of 1990 and 1991. While living in Crimea, I saw dozens of Crimean Tatar families working together in what they called, in Russian, “brigadas” (Russian for “brigades”), helping one another build homes in rapid fashion.

They found, through experience, that working together produces synergy, i.e., the output is greater than the sum of the inputs. As Bill Taylor writes in Kingdom Partnerships, “… One draft horse can pull four tons. If you harnessed two draft horses together, they can pull twenty-two tons.”

To reach our world today, we need just this kind of “brigada” and just this kind of synergy! And by the way, the same term is also good in Spanish! :-)

THE SKY IS FALLING! (NAT’L GEO. FOR LESS!)
Now you can get the sky … and everything else . . . for less! Last week’s item reported a better price on the National Geographic CD compendium (” THOSE YELLOW RECTANGLES FOR EVEN LESS!”) and now we hear from our sleuths that you can even beat that price! So the sky . . . and everything else that Nat’l Geographic has pictured down through the years . . . is falling in price! $149 is the best price we’ve heard… at Price/Costco. Unfortunately, we’ve also heard some disappointment from at least one reader who thought the quality would be parallel with the quality of the print version . . . and in his opinion, it did not. This reader reported that the pictures are “postage stamp sized” and that if you enlarged the layout, the text became fuzzy… At the very same time, another reader wrote, saying, “It’s 30 CD-ROM’s total, hybrid (runs on Macs and PCs) with every photo and article and ad they’ve ever published. It has an excellent search engine. Great stuff! I could hardly pull my kids away from it, though they had homework to do.” :-) So — maybe keep the receipt handy and perhaps NG would refund your money directly if you don’t like it? Despite the questionable report, I’m still saving up my pennies hoping to get this one by Christmas. Even with fuzzy text, it still seems like there would be a ton of reasons to own 108 years of National Geo.! :-)

GOOD NEWS FOR CENTRAL ASIA LANGUAGE GURUS
If you’re learning (or wishing you could learn) a Central Asian language, then it looks like life just got a bit easier. The Dictionary of Turkic Languages, Routledge. 1996 just hit the market. The web site http://www.imagins.com/MM/DTL.htm has more info. This new multi-language dictionary covers eight major Turkic languages: Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Tatar, Turkish, Turkmen, Uighur, Uzbek. (361 p.) It’s hardback, providing two thousand “headwords” in English, translated into each of the eight Turkic languages. Words are organized alphabetically in English. Original script and Latin transcription are provided for each language. For ease of use, alphabetical indices are also given for the eight languages. But here’s the really cool news . The CD-Rom version with native speakers pronunciation is to be released in 1998. I’m holding out for the multi-media version! :-) Thanks to Lee for the tip!!!

NEW 10/40 WINDOW REPORTER COMING YOUR WAY
… if you subscribe, that is. The Christian Information Network wrote this past week to announce the release of The 10/40 Window Reporter, a quarterly newsletter dedicated to the countries, people and events of the 10/40 Window. (The Christian Information Network provides ministry information and resources pertinent to the 10/40 Window.) Those interested in receiving the newsletter may email the Christian Information Network at cin10_40atcompuservedotcom or call CIN toll free at 1-888-772-9104. They want your complete name, phone number and mailing address. And by the way, CIN also asked Brigada participants to submit information for possible publication in The 10/40 Window Reporter. Items of interest must [obviously] be related to the 10/40 Window and would include events such as conferences, corporate prayer journeys and verifiable newsworthy information. If you’ve got a tip just contact CIN, Attn: The 10/40 Window Reporter editorial staff, 11025 State Highway 83 North, Colorado Springs, CO 80921-3623, email cin10_40atcompuservedotcom.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE ON PRAYER
Right now in the month of October millions of Christians around the world are uniting in prayer for specific unreached people groups. Organizers are expecting 30 to 50 million believers, perhaps from every country, to participate in Praying Through the Window III. More than 1 million prayer calendars have been distributed in 10 languages, many of which were used as originals for printing or copying. The prayer guide book giving detailed profiles and prayer requests has been translated into at least 12 languages and is available in print, on the World Wide Web, and through e-mail. Furthermore, invitations to participate have been delivered by mail, radio, and Christian television in many countries.

HOW DO I FIND OUT ABOUT ALL THE BRIGADA NETWORKS?
Not a problem. Just send a simple email message to hubatxcdotorg with only two words on the first line of the message:
conferences brigada

You’ll receive a list of the names of dozens of email-activated conferences. Those labeled, “brigada-connections-…” (as well as the exception, brigada-travel-bids) are special. You can write them without “joining” by just sending a message to the conference itself (for example, or . (Write the former to request a quote for a particular air fare itinerary from dozens of cooperating travel agents; write the “connections” crews for leads on particular clusters of least reached peoples.) All the other conferences (e.g., brigada-peoples, brigada-cities, brigada-pubs-globalprayerdigest, brigada-pubs-missionfrontiers, etc.) have to be ‘joined’. But it’s not hard. Just send a note to hubatxcdotorg with the word “subscribe” in front of whatever conference grabs your attention. For example,
subscribe brigada-peoples

Some conferences, like brigada-peoples, are more like free-flowing information/networking sessions. Others are basically mailing lists for emailed journals or newsletters. Each conference is different — but the “welcome message” usually spells out the format. In all cases, just “copy the mail” for a while to get the hang of it — and maybe that’s safest protocol prior to jumping in head first! :-) Happy hunting!

HALFWAY THROUGH – ARE YOU ‘PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW’???
If you’ve lost your book (I misplaced mine this past week at Envision ’97!) don’t forget that you can get the ‘digest’ version at http://www.ad2000.org by clicking on PTWIII tools. Granted — it might not be as attractive as the printed version with pictures, but hey — for virtual prayer-walking, you can’t beat it! :-)

WANT TO MEET A FEW DOCTORS WITH A PASSION FOR THE UNREACHED?
How ’bout a few hundred then! :-) Now you can … on November 7-8. That’s when Southeast Christian Church will present its second annual medical mission conference. This year the conference will open Friday night with an upbeat praise and worship service with a theme of “The Primacy of Prayer”. Saturday morning will present lectures from short term and career physicians and nurses presenting the joys and the obstacles of their work as well as a lecture on Culture Shock and Bivocational Mission Work. Saturday afternoon will consist of break-out sessions concentrating on specific medical and dental disease processes; and how to set up medical mission work in your own church as well as how to become a team leader. Nurses will receive 5 contact hours and physicians will receive 5 hours of C.M.E. credit. There is no fee for this course. (Can you believe this? Something related to medicine and it’s free???!!! :-)) For more information, download the details by sending an email to hubatxcdotorg with the only line in the message being,
get brigada medmissionsconf

Or, contact Stephanie Garling at 502-451-5317 ext. 4725 or write: Southeast Christian Church, Missions Committee, 2840 Hikes Lane, Louisville, Kentucky 40218. If those two approaches don’t work for you, you can also email TinaBruneratcompuservedotcom.

WHAT WILL WE DO ABOUT THE BOSNIAS?
Our mission has just been asked by the Antioch Network to find a church or churches to “adopt” one of 32 cities in Bosnia which have been war-torn, raped, and destroyed. (What an incredible burden it creates when people can’t get along!) So where will we go for more information? First, I’ll send a message to brigada-peoplesatxcdotorg and say — “Where do I find info. on Bosnia?” Then I’ll hope for the best.

(Note: If I weren’t already a member, I’d join first by sending a message to hubatxcdotorg that read simply,
subscribe brigada-peoples
. . . then wait for the welcome response.) If some of my buddies there can’t point me to several options, I’ll be very surprised. I’m hoping to receive 5-10 good email contacts that can help me learn more about the situation there… maybe some web sites, some good books, articles, and journals. Next I’ll write the 5-10 people with very specific questions… “What part of Bosnia should we try to approach?” “How can a church/agency partnership make the best contribution?” “Where do we learn the language(s)?” “What are the risks?” and most of all, “Who can I contact that would help us learn more?” With this simple beginning, we’ll get started trying to learn about Bosnia. Thank God for the unselfish resource people working the brigada-peoples conference. Thank God for Christian unity. Now we roll up our sleeves!
