GLOBAL MAPPING MAKES SPECIAL OFFER TO BRIGADA READERS

Thanks to Harold Britton and the folks at Global Mapping! Having seen Brigada‘s readers’ commitment to praying for the 100 Gateway Cities (by way of receiving hundreds of 100 Gateway Cities map orders recently), they have recognized the 1300+ readers of Brigada as a unique family of serious co-workers deserving special consideration for such projects. As a result, they have offered their brand new “20:21 Library of Mission and Evangelism Resources on CD-ROM for Windows” to Brigada participants at significantly reduced pricing. To find out more, send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line in the body of the message text:

We’re talkin’ about a savings of hundreds of dollars, folks.

HAVING TROUBLE “GETTING” THE JOSHUA PROJECT 2000 LIST?

At least one Brigada participant (using a different email client than we have here) had trouble with the size of the 2 files containing the Joshua Project 2000 List. As a result, we’ve now broken that list into four parts instead of two. Last week, we wrote that you’d have to include two lines in your request… but now you’ll need four. Just send the following 4 lines to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)

get brigada joshua-list-a
get brigada joshua-list-b
get brigada joshua-list-c
get brigada joshua-list-d

By the way, file
“a” contains countries beginning with the letters a-e;
“b” contains those beginning with f-i;
“c” contains j-p; and
“d” contains the remainder of the list.

In this way, if you were primarily interested in one country in particular, you could just instruct the hub to send you the precise segment you need. Remember, the list is presented in comma-delimited ascii and can be opened in any word processor, spreadsheet, or database program for analysis. If you retrieved the list last week, you need not retrieve it again. Even though the list has been repartitioned, no changes have been made in the list itself.

HELP WANTED: FOR RESEARCHING/WRITING AD2000 & BEYOND PEOPLE PROFILES

This past week, we heard from Gabriella Araya, who works with Rick Ward at the Bethany World Center. Bethany is the church that has agreed to coordinate the researching and writing of prayer profiles for the people groups found on the Joshua Project 2000 List. Imagine if it were your job to write up reports on 1685 peoples! Wouldn’t you appreciate some help??? So would Gabriella and the folks at Bethany. More specifically, Bethany is looking for

  1. those who might have pictures of people from these groups. Face shots, in particular, are needed to feature in each of the profiles. and prayer profiles.

  2. They also would appreciate any and all research material available. [gulp ] In particular, if you already have something written on a particular people group on the list, or know of someone who does, contact Bethany. Note that they already have the complete stack of relevant people profiles from the Adopt-a-People Clearinghouse.

  3. Finally, they need researchers/writers.

If you’d be willing to prepare a draft profile on one of the groups and you have access to resources that would allow you to do so, contact Gabriella at 102132dot52atcompuservedotcom  (102132dot52atcompuservedotcom)   or by calling 504-774-2000. We’ll all be glad you did!!!

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT “MISSIONWATCH

This one isn’t by Timex. It’s by Barrett, Long and company! The MissionWatch is a bi-weekly 5-page alert letter listing news and projects which affect the least evangelized peoples of the world (World A)
[Ed. Note: which for the most part contains people of the 10/40 Window].

Justin Long, Editor of the ‘Watch, writes that “The intent of the watch is to share new models, case studies and innovations between various ministries in the hopes that, by learning what others are doing to make themselves more efficient and successful in completing their mission, the reader can improve the efficiency of his own ministry as well.” An annual subscription to the MissionWatch/Go! is $25/year. For a sample issue, write to Justin Long JDavidLongatAOLdotCOM  (JDavidLongatAOLdotCOM)   . Note that Justin also places occasional blips from The MissionWatch on Brigada-peoples. You can join today by sending email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line in the text of the message text:

PEOPLE OF THE WEEK

Thanks to Justin Long for this week’s “People of the Week”: “Let’s remember to pray for the Manchu of China: 10.5 million and less than 1% Christian. Most adhere to Chinese folk-religions and spiritist practices. Many are bilingual in Mandarin, but they are treated as conquered subjects by many Han Chinese and so have an aversion to the language. A handful of mission agencies are working among them, and some churches have been planted. Only about a third have heard the Gospel, leaving some seven and a half million untold.”
--------------------------------------

HOW DO YOU SPELL SECURITY?

Occasionally, we’re asked about the level of security we can provide on Brigada. Originally, with the formation of Brigada-Projects-Security, we were hoping to create air-tight, super-secure conferences for those in sensitive places. But after several months’ discussion among what I believe are some of the most knowledgeable people on the Net when it comes to security issues, we’ve drawn the conclusion that there really isn’t any practical security available right now [emphasis on the word practical]. The bottom line: Brigada users started using PGP on a regular basis, the future would look a lot brighter. But that possibility is not likely to happen anytime soon. At this point, after experimenting with it some this past month, I’ve concluded that for the average user, PGP will be just a tad strange and unexciting, especially in light of the misunderstandings we’ll fear it could cause! :-)

REMEMBER

“GOOD TIMES” IS NO GOOD TIME! — Remember, if you get a message about a supposed virus named, “Good Times”, just ignore it. It’s a hoax, probably designed by INTERNET service handlers to generate tons more traffic so you’ll owe them tons more money for sending all those warnings!!! :-)

GET “MAKE A DIFFERENCE” AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

“Make a Difference” is a four-hour seminar-in-a-box that trains mission activists how to mobilize their fellowship to new mission vision and put feet to their prayers for the 10/40 Window. The video-based training package features key mobilizers-Greg Fritz of Caleb Project, Bill & Amy Stearns of World Christian, Bruce Camp of Ev Free Church, Beverly Pegues of the Christian Information Network, Greg Parsons of the U.S. Center for World Mission and Larry Walker of ACMC. The accompanying manual with its photocopy-able participant sheets guides local church mission activists through basic practical steps of mobilization. Much of this training material formed the curriculum for the recent “What’s After October?” Seminars. “Make A Difference” can be ordered from Procla-Media Productions for $39.95 (price includes 4-session video – sessions range from 15 to 30 minutes, and Manual workbook.). WANT TO TEACH??? HEAD FOR K-STAN!

There is an immediate need for several elementary teachers at a school in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The Tien Shan School was been operational since February 1995. It was founded by an independent group of parents for the express purpose of providing low cost quality Christian Education in the English medium, for children of multi-national foreign workers. Teachers will need to raise their own support. For more information email Scott Grandi at Sgrandiataoldotcom  (Sgrandiataoldotcom)   .

GOT A CHURCH? WANT TO LET OTHERS KNOW?

If the answer is yes and yes, you just might want to let The Center for Great Commission Studies know about it! The Center is a research center in Wake Forest, NC, USA. It is a part of the Churches in Habitat Project of the Peoples Information Network (PIN). As part of this project it is seeking to build a database of every church in the world by at least its city, if not even more exact (security permitting). To accomplish this, it is seeking to obtain directories of churches from denominations, mission boards, councils, etc. If there are individuals or groups who can assist in this by sending these directories or listings (or other helpful information), it would be very appreciated. It can be sent electronically (preferred), by fax, or by post. Please include contact information. Send info. to

GLOBAL GLIMPSE

A Christian worker in the Middle East spent the past year building relationships with leaders of a Muslim minority group. He was invited to speak, but then a local TV station aired a slanderous expose of Christians, showing names and faces, including his own. However, the minority group viewed this as an attack on themselves, and requested him to speak anyway. He spoke to 200 people inside the mosque and several hundred more outside listening by speaker. Roughly 60% of his text was scripture, and afterward an estimated elder added his stamp of approval. Today this worker looks with anticipation at the harvest to come.

JOSHUA PROJECT PREMIERS!!!

This past week, we asked the Director of Communications to tell us about the AD2000 & Beyond effort being dubbed, “Joshua Project 2000” and the associated “Launch” scheduled for the end of this month. Just yesterday, he sent this Brigada exclusive:
[The following article is by Media and Communications Director for the AD2000 & Beyond Movement based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Thanks for taking time to write, David!]

“The cat is finally out of the bag. The AD2000 and Beyond Movement introduces Joshua Project 2000, an inter-agency, inter-denominational, inter-church, step by step plan to see at a minimum, a pioneer church planting movement within every ethno-linguistic people of over 10,000 individuals by December 31, 2000. A 55 page Joshua Project 2000 handbook has been written that is now available in the November-December Mission Frontiers Bulletin. You can receive MF electronically here on Brigada or you can request a copy from the AD2000 and Beyond International Office for the cost of postage. (E-mail Lauriatad2000dotorg  (Lauriatad2000dotorg)   or call (719) 576-2000.) This handbook contains the priority list of 1,685 least reached peoples that Joshua Project 2000 seeks to produce prayer profiles for, facilitate church adoptions for, send prayer teams to during the October 1997 Praying Through the Window III and ultimately see a church planting movement among these peoples by the year 2000. Joshua Project 2000 is the outworkings of GCOWE ’95 and is the implementation strategy toward the greater goal of a church for every people and the Gospel for every person by AD2000.”

“Pray for the Joshua Project 2000 “Launch” meetings to be held the last week of this month in Colorado Springs where AD2000 and Beyond core leadership has been invited to come together to see how the AD2000 tracks/networks and the national initiatives can all take their share of Joshua Project 2000. Currently 210 AD2000 leaders will be attending from 83 different countries. Won’t it be great to see Koreans networking with Brazilians to assure that a church planting movement is established among the 850,000 Qashqai nomads of Iran, where there in not one known believer, no Scripture translation, no Christian radio, nor even a Gospel tract. Joshua Project 2000 mobilization conferences are being scheduled in 1997 in Hawaii, Brazil and South Africa which Brigada readers might want to attend. More details later.”

As David shared above, the priority list of peoples is about to be released at the “Launch”, near the end of this month. However, because you’re “in the know” and you are a Brigada participant, you can get it today!!! Simply send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   (you guessed that part, right?) with only the following 2 lines in the body of the message text:
get brigada joshua-list-a
get brigada joshua-list-b

You’ll receive 2 ascii files (about 40k or 13 pages each, depending on the font you assign of course) in what’s called “comma delimited” format. If you simply open them in your word processor, you’ll be able to read them just fine. But if you’ve got any popular spreadsheet or database, such as Excel or dBase, you’ll be able to import or load them as is and see the data organized by fields. Naturally, you should append them to see the big picture, since list-a includes countries which begin with the letters a-k, with the remainder appearing in list-b. Included are fields for country, people group name, population, number of Christians, language, and population in the homeland country. Thanks to Luis Bush and Dan Scribner of AD2000 & Beyond as well as Matt Benjamin and Ron Rowland (PIN) for their help in arranging this unique “sneak peak” for Brigada readers.

GIVE RAMADAN NEW MEANING! – 30 DAYS MUSLIM PRAYER FOCUS

From January 21 to Feb 19, 1996, Muslims around the world will be holding their annual fasting month known as Ramadan. Now you can participate in a worldwide movement that seeks to help followers of Christ pray for, learn about, and reach out to the Muslim peoples of the world, so that they may come to know God’s grace revealed in Jesus Christ. This third annual international mobilization is an excellent follow-up to the “Praying Through the Window II” project during the past month of October. Want materials? They’re ready to order. You can get a newly-edited 50-page illustrated Prayer Guide booklet (with a full-color cover, available both in adult and children’s versions) as well as a special Video on the Islamic world (approx. 10 minutes, revised and available in Nov., again, available in both an adult and children’s version). HELP US GROW

Some will recall Jonathan Marsden (the technical wizard behind the hardware and software that makes Brigada possible) saying previously that he wouldn’t consider Brigada to have “arrived” until we had 10,000 participants. This past week he reminded us, as we crossed the 1280 barrier, that we were “1/8th the way to my 10000 target :-) :-) “. Maybe if we reach 10,000 users he’ll do something out of the ordinary like, . . . take a day off??? :-) Want to help? You know what to do! Share this Brigada Today with someone else! Thanks for making it possible for us to avoid advertising costs . . . and keep this a free service! :-)

CMDNet: BRIGADA DOWN UNDER

One of the latest conferences to be set up under the Brigada banner is the New Zealand-based CMDNet (the facilitating “organisation” (NZ spelling :-) ) is the entre for ission irection). According to Bob Hall, CMDNet’s moderator, the purpose of the conference is “to facilitate networking and the spread of relevant missions information among those in New Zealand (and hopefully in due course Australia and the South Pacific) who are interested in or involved in cross-cultural missions.” Members of CMDNet will be encouraged:

  1. to share information on mission resources they have found to be useful;
  2. raise mission-related questions and share answers or responses to those questions;
  3. share testimonies or news items that relate to world missions; and
  4. download files from CMDNet and make use of the information.

Any readers of Brigada Today in New Zealand, Australia or the South Pacific who think this might be of interest are encouraged to check it out. The subscription list stands at 25 already (and includes a couple of Americans!) To “join up” simply send an internet message to HubatXcdotOrg  (HubatXcdotOrg)   with the text:

GLOBAL GLIMPSE: CHINA REVIVAL

“The fire of the gospel is burning in this village, and following heavy persecution, every single person has become a Christian.” “Now, when we go on the street, people drop everything to take part. Many shout while we preach ‘We have never heard of such good news. Why didn’t anyone tell us before?’ They forget everything and listen for hours.” “In Xinyang district, the number of believers increased from 1,000 to 10,000 in one month.” … We have far too few Bibles and are too weak to train all the new believers”

Thanks to Justin Long JDavidLongataoldotcom  (JDavidLongataoldotcom)   for his regular contributions to Brigada-Peoples. He recently began sharing news about a “People of the Week” (that’s a group, not that magazine!) For example, this past week he shared: “Let’s pray for the Hunanese of China. They have nearly 43 million people, but less than 2% Christian. They don’t have a Jesus film in their own language, although the Jesus film is available in Mandarin which many of the Hunanese speak. Most don’t belong to any particular religion. There are several denominations and mission agencies working among them. They are precious in the Lord’s sight!” Want to see more? ANDOVER CH. OF CHRIST GIVES “PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW” NEW MEANING

It was dairy farmer Donnie Knowles who thought it up… but everybody got involved. Mid-way through their month of “Praying Through the Window”, the Andover Church of Christ (kind of near Cleveland, Ohio) took time during Sunday morning worship to feature a real “window” up on the platform, with the panes covered with brown paper. As members described the impact that prayer could have on the world, the paper was peeled away, one pane at a time, to reveal views ‘through the window’ of color maps of various countries and regions of the [real] 10/40 Window. They’ve kept the huge set of window panes on stage all month just to remind the members to lift up the needs of the least reached. These kinds of props and visual clues can be really helpful in creating an image that will stick in the minds of a church membership. Way to go Andover!

By the way, devices like these don’t have to be real expensive, either! Jokingly, I asked if Donnie’s cows minded the increased draft through their barn and, to my surprise, he replied, “No, we took these windows out of a barn that’s empty for now.” So, keep your eyes open for a local dairy farmer if you want to feature the 10/40 Window in your own church. If you find a willing and imaginative volunteer, maybe it won’t be such a “pain” to create your next enduring image! :-) So let’s get moo-ving!

PLAN NOW FOR YOUR PRAYING THROUGH THE 100 GATEWAY CITIES RECEPTION

Remember Tommy Baker at Florence? He’s the guy that recruited 100 people in his church of 1000 in northern Kentucky to each pray for a different Gateway City throughout the entire month of October (as well as for the normal featured cities for each respective day). (You can download his earlier story by sending email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the line
get brigadachurch-florence

Many have followed his plan and introduced similar approaches in their own congregations. Well stay tuned! His creativity is at it again. He’s putting together a reception for Sunday evening, Nov. 5, to which he’s inviting all those “prayer adoptors” and others who have shown interest in the project. They’ll have some refreshments, recount stories and answered prayer for the 100 Gateway Cities, then highlight some of the most desperate situations within the ‘window’. In correlation with the proposed timeline for Envision ’96, Tommy hopes that this army of prayer warriors can help the church in its selection of a prospective target area for a new PACE Project (where a particular church takes responsibility for putting together a relational network to plant a new congregation in a least reached city or people group). If you’ve got a moment right now, would you pray for Tommy and his Nov. 5th reception? Ask God to help those 100 people move their congregation toward action and initiative in a desperate area of the world.

URUGUAYANS PRAY “THROUGH THE WINDOW”

Thanks to Larry Griffin, who reported that tonight the church in Montevideo will be on its knees! “Please be in prayer for an all-night prayer vigil that is being planned for this coming Friday evening [Oct. 27] from 10:00 p.m. til 6:00 a.m. We will be focusing on the needs of the 100 Gateway Cities in the 10/40 Window, educating the congregation on the needs, and lifting up our prayers in a concentrated effort to wage spiritual battle against the barriers limiting the evangelization of these cities. The members of the congregation have been participating all this month in the “Pray Through The Window II” campaign focusing on the 100 Gateway Cities. Please pray that this interest in the World Wide Mission of the church will continue to grow, and will be a positive influence on the spiritual life of the congregation.” For more information, subscribe to brigada-uruguay-montevideo by sending email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line in the body of the message text:

“PRAY TODAY” FOR WINDOWS

Think about it. It’s a natural! You run Windows on your computer — why shouldn’t it remind you to pray for peoples who live in the 10/40 Window… and all around the world, in fact. That’s exactly what “Pray Today” does. Bob Hall SOCI136atcantvadotcanterburydotacdotnz  (SOCI136atcantvadotcanterburydotacdotnz)   , who serves as National Coordinator of the Centre for Mission Direction in New Zealand, tipped us off to this little program (that you put in your Windows “start up” folder). Thereafter, every time you boot Windows, you get information on a new Bible-less people (name, number, religion, status of Christian work and Scripture translation). You guessed it… developed by Wycliffe Associates (in England, no less; those English are always coming up with something clever! :-) ). For more info., contact your Wycliffe national office or Bob. By the way, they didn’t put in an ad for Wycliffe anywhere in the box. Seems as if they wanted to focus our minds on the need rather than the banner. Cool.

INTERESTED IN KAZKAHSTAN? COME TO SAN DIEGO!

At least come during Nov. 29 – Dec. 1 for “Kazakhstan ’95”! 500 Kazakh government and business leaders are supposed to be present, along with U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher and the mayor of San Diego. The conference focuses on business opportunities in Oil, Gas, Minerals, and Agriculture. Of course, you can focus on other stuff as well. :-) Write Eric Frost ericdotfrostatsdsudotedu  (ericdotfrostatsdsudotedu)   for more information or call the conference organizer at (800)564-4220 for a brochure. And thanks to Al Chong for the tip to Eric!

SO HOW MANY PEOPLE GROUPS IS IT?

One Brigada reader recently wrote, “It seems like about a year ago there were ll,000 unreached people groups remaining on earth. How about letting us know at least every six months how many unreached have been reached, and how many are still remaining? I’m sure we would all get a thrill out of knowing this!” Rest assured that, for the most part, there are just as many “people groups” as there have always been. The difference is in the way we describe them. One major shift came about a year ago, when the majority of researchers finally agreed on the concept of using ethnolinguistic definitions rather than socio-economic distinctions. “Shazam…” All of a sudden, thousands of people groups were lumped together, many for the first time since 1974. (Makes for a great quote in your monthly mission report! :-) “I’m happy to report that while last month, there were 16,750 unreached people groups and, thanks to … [ahem] many factors, today that number is a mere 1,685 groups! Please send your check to….” :-) ) The truth is, we’re afraid that the progress implied by shrinking unreached people group “counts” might be oversimplifying the task a bit. In reality, it seems that the task has been redefined… but, in many cases, the work remains just as challenging. For example, simply by dropping groups with fewer than 10,000 in number, it might look like we’ve grown closer to our goal of making sure every group has opportunities to hear, but that depends on your perspective. (If you happen to be a part of a group numbering 10,000 people or less, it might still feel pretty lonely out there.) On the other hand, let’s admit that if a mighty people group nearby happens to hear and respond, let’s hope they themselves would take responsibility for reaching a smaller group next door.

Now… back to the original question, it seems that more and more researchers are finally coming closer to agreeing that there are less than 2000 ethnolinguistic groups (if you only count those numbering 10,000 or more in population) with little or no opportunity to hear the gospel. Of course, getting to them won’t be an easy task… So we’d better keep praying. Within the next 24 months, it looks like we’ll finally have a more accurate means of tracking the progress of mobilizing new church planting movements for at least those 2000 or so groups, thanks to the momentum being provided by the AD2000 & Beyond Movement. So … stay tuned. Your wish is about to be granted… depending on how you define it. :-)

PRAYER FOR THE SIKH

I know, I know. I said I wouldn’t bring up this “sikh” pronunciation thing again. But this week David Greenlee wrote a note that just about caused me to fall out of my chair in laughter. Apparently, the pronunciation questions pre-date Brigada! David was serving as Program Director on the OM ship Logos at the time. He remembers one morning when he was speaking at a church in Lisbon and…, “At that time I didn’t speak quite enough Portuguese to preach, but enough to catch on (at times!) to what was being said. As I talked about people groups and (then) current crises, I referred repeatedly to the Sikhs. After a few minutes, though, I realized that my translator was missing something. First, not unusual, was the concept of “peoples” and “people groups”–assuming I just meant the plural of person. But due to my pronouncing “Sikh” “sick” he was more confused. So the people were challenged to pray for the “doentes” — that is, the “sick people” of India. Not a bad idea but not what I had in mind!” :-) Thanks for the memories, David!

HOW ONE CHURCH IS TURNING “PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW” INTO ACTION

Thanks to Judy Johnson and the folks at the Clovernook Christian Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, who are putting legs on their prayers! They meet tomorrow… on what will probably be the coldest day of the year yet in Cincinnati (weathermen say 43 degrees will be the high) to walk through “Over-the-Rhine” inner city section of the “Queen City”. As they “prayer walk”, they’ll focus on the people, the needs, and the opportunities they see. Clovernook maintains a ministry especially geared toward this area of Cincinnati… so the prayers won’t be landing on deaf ears. Many members of the congregation will turn right around and be back out into the area in coming days to lend assistance and share hope. Meanwhile, many of Clovernook’s members are involved in praying for the 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window. The front page article in their Sunday Evening Post weekly newsletter was entitled, “Making a difference… In the world… in Cincinnati… and You!”
--------------------------------------

USA TO HOST NATIONAL CONCERT OF PRAYER

Clovernook won’t be the only church praying tomorrow! According to Dave and Kim Butts 73764dot3051atcompuservedotcom  (73764dot3051atcompuservedotcom)   , “On Oct. 21 at least 200 US cities will be simultaneously joined in prayer through a National Concert of Prayer. Taking place from 7-9 pm in each city, these Concerts of Prayer will focus on world evangelization. The theme is “Together for Revival.” Since October is also “Pray through the Window” month, each US city will be linked with a nation in the 10/40 window.” David is secretary for the Denominational Prayer Leaders’ Network, which works closely with the AD2000 & Beyond Movement. Wow.

FOLLOW UP ON “WANT TO BUY A SMALL COUNTRY?”

Oops. Our source made a correction in last week’s article on the Kuwaiti government wanting to “buy” Malawi. The article did appear in The Malawi Times, as we wrote last week, but it was not the front page on June 9th, ’93. It was the front page on June 9th, ’95! Just a bit more timely than previously reported. Gulp.

FOLLOW UP ON ‘FROM “THE HONEYMOON’S OVER” DEPT., UZBEKISTAN’

Thanks to Dave Moody DMatxcdotorg  (DMatxcdotorg)   for the following response to last week’s note from Justin Long on Uzbekistan.

“UZBEKISTAN: WHAT? THE HONEYMOON’S OVER? BUT, WE’RE STILL INVITING FOLKS TO THE MARRIAGE FEAST!

  • Is it difficult for believers in Uzbekistan? Yes!
  • Have several churches been unable to register officially with the government? Yes.
  • Have there been instances of deliberate, premeditative persecution of believers? Yes.
  • Have some foreigners been asked to leave because of their activities?
  • Have people died for the Kingdom in Uzbekistan? Yes!
  • Does this concern foreigners and nationals alike? You bet!

All of this is true and quite sobering, but it is also inaccurate! [sic]

  • Are churches multiplying? Yes!
  • Are Uzbeks coming to the Lord? In historically unprecedented numbers! Not to mention Russians, Koreans and other ethnic groups!
  • Are foreign workers hopeful for a movement of the Holy Spirit? Like never before! Actually, most are concerned that there aren’t enough men (and women!) to haul in the nets, when the Lord brings harvest (sorry for mixing two metaphors!).
  • Are most workers planning on leaving anytime soon? Not until their roles are unnecessary, and their jobs complete!

Nobody knows what the future holds but let’s remember who holds the future! God has given his saints the power and privilege of causality in Prayer. The only inevitability in the universe is the absolute and complete dominion of Christ. Somehow, some way our prayers are playing into this manifest reality. Let’s pray this way for Uzbekistan! Ephesians 1:17-23.” Thanks Dave!

YOU SAY “SIKH” AND I’LL SAY “SEEK” :-)

Thanks to David Householder DavidHousholderatXCdotOrg  (DavidHousholderatXCdotOrg)   who actually conducted a straw poll at the North American Council for South Asian Christians (NACSAC) in Chicago. (Can you believe this guy? :-) He was actually walking through the convention, asking people “man-on-the-street-reporter” style, “So, what’ll it be: (pronounced) “sick” or “seek”?”!!!) (In case you’re still curious, apparently one delegate from Uttar Pradesh insisted it was “seek”… but then followed up by saying that in the mixture of Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu used in much of Northwest India, it’s “sick”! So… sounds like you’ll be right somewhere no matter what pronunciation you use! :-) The funny thing was the plenary session that followed! Dave wrote that in the middle of his message, the speaker explained, ‘Jesus told us to turn the other cheek,’ but pronounced ‘cheek’ as ‘chick.’ Aha!” It’s never as simple as it seems!

MORE “WHAT’S AFTER OCTOBER”

So you weren’t able to arrange travel to Cincinnati for tomorrow? Never fear… there’s still hope. Nate Wilson NateWilsonatXCdotOrg  (NateWilsonatXCdotOrg)   informs us that there are several similar workshops lined up for other cities. Take your pick: Denver November 3 ($15), NateWilsonatXCdotorg  (NateWilsonatXCdotorg)   (303) 730-4170; Tulsa, OK, Oct 30 6-10pm 656-4533atMCIMaildotcom  (656-4533atMCIMaildotcom)   , (918) 587-1947; Wichita SteveAIMSatAOLdotcom  (SteveAIMSatAOLdotcom)   316-942-8293; and Los Angeles, Nov. 18 (try NateWilsonatXCdotOrg  (NateWilsonatXCdotOrg)   for more info). Evidently, according to Nate, The “What’s After October” workshops are designed to help church leaders follow up on the “Praying Through The Window–100 Gateway cities” prayer campaign in October. “We want to give creative ideas and helpful strategies that will help bring mission more into the heart of the local church all year long,” Nate explained. “The “Make A Difference” package (described last week, available from Proclamedia at 76551dot2032atcompuservedotcom  (76551dot2032atcompuservedotcom)   or tel. 719-380-0505) has the same information we’ll cover in the “What’s After October” workshops for the benefit of those who were not able to attend a “WAO” workshop and for those who want to share the “WAO” material with others!” Thanks Nate!

“GOOD TIMES” VIRUS IS ACTUALLY A BANDWIDTH THIEF!

That’s the truth. The hoax about the “Good Times” virus (making the rounds on a couple of Brigada conferences this past week) is not all that funny. Because we all care about our friends on “The Net”, we end up forwarding the “Good Times” warning to others, unknowingly wasting lots of the INTERNET’s time and resources. Rest assured… it’s a joke. If you receive a warning about a “Good Times” virus, just ignore it… or request that the sender re-send an apology to those on the distribution list of his/her original message. “Good Times” doesn’t exist.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE: MOROCCAN BELIEVER IMPRISONED

Jamal, a young Moroccan man, was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment for witnessing about his Christian faith. When asked what he had to say in his defense an eyewitness said Jamal simply declared, “I am a Christian, but I respect the Islamic religion” and sat down. He had no lawyer to defend his case since he could not afford one. This is the fourth conviction of Jamal, who boldly witnesses to his faith in Jesus Christ. Freedom of religion is supposedly guaranteed by the Moroccan constitution.

COMIC BOOKS ARE COMIN’ TO A MISSION FIELD NEAR YOU

According to planners of an international conference set for January, “Comic books have zoomed into the missions field in a big way.” (See Brigada Today, Sept. 1.) Conference organizers wrote to report that “January 22-26, 1996, a team of professional comic book artists and writers, who are all Christians, will teach a four day course in the Philippines, training missionaries and Christian nationals how to create credible comics with a powerful message for specific cultures.” One planner, Len Cowan, stated, “People all over the world read comics, and innovative missionaries have been putting the medium to work in evangelism and discipleship materials.” Len is a communications coordinator and originator of the idea to bring comics pros and missionaries together. “It’s a great idea which has worked pretty well, but the missionaries found out how hard it is to create a quality comic book!” That led Cowan to contact Nate Butler, a well known industry professional, who offered to assemble the faculty which would teach a special course on how to do comics right. The format will include instructional sessions, panel discussions, and hands-on workshops in writing, illustration, editing & art directing, promotion & marketing, communication theory, and evangelism strategy.” Cool.

DOWN UNDER PRAYER FOR THE 100 GATEWAY CITIES

They’re at work in New Zealand, praying through the Window! Bob Hall wrote, “Thousands of the prayer pamphlets have been distributed (adult as well as children’s version), about 160 Light The Window videos have been sold and another 120 or so given away and about six boxes of the Gateway Cities books have been sold. … We have a national Christian radio station here in New Zealand, Radio Rhema. Each weekday morning I get to pray live for that day’s Gateway Cities… Later in the morning they also provide detailed information on each city for that day. There are lots of prayer groups, churches and Christian schools involved in this prayer programme here. … In faxing in for a copy of the CBN video one woman wrote: “Our church has really caught the vision after showing the Light The Window video. People are spontaneously praying and weeping for the cities after watching the video. People who never normally pray aloud are interceding with tears and earnest prayers. Praise the Lord!” Very encouraging. I shared that on air yesterday morning and then this morning was able to follow it up with the Singapore testimony from the most recent “Brigada Tonight” [ :-) ]. By the way, there are also some eight prayer teams or so from New Zealand going into Gateway Cities this month, including a team of 40 to Calcutta. Not bad for a nation of only 3.4 million!” (Thanks to Bob Hall bdothallatsocidotcanterburydotnz  (bdothallatsocidotcanterburydotnz)   for that update!)
--------------------------------------

AND THEY’RE PRAYING IN SCHOOLS!

“Great news regarding the response! I have distributed the 10/40 calendar to my 7th grade homeroom and to all the teachers in my school. We have 650+ students and 50 on our faculty. Our church is also participating in the prayer calendar. Praise God for the opportunity.” Thanks to Martha DiPalma at the Out-of-Door Academy Martha_DiPalmaatODAdotedu  (Martha_DiPalmaatODAdotedu)  .

EATING THROUGH THE 100 GATEWAY CITIES

Thanks to John Hanna for this delicious idea: “Another possibility for your church to participate in the Praying Through the Window project: Eating the Food of the 100 Gateway Cities. (If you’re already planning Prayer-And-Fasting for the 100 Gateway Cities, I’m not sure you can use this strategy…)

Organize a small committee to divide up the restaurant listings in the phone book and call each ethnic food restaurant to see if they serve food like that of one of the 100 Gateway Cities. Many larger cities will have food specialties from a number of Chinese, East Asian (Thai, Cambodian…), Middle Eastern, and even African cities. (Believe it or not, Somali food is quite good and available in most major US cities.)

Then schedule a time to go out to eat, (lunch or dinner) at each of these restaurants, hopefully close to the day the city is scheduled in October. Post the schedule and a sign-up sheet in your church, and have the opportunity announced and listed in the church bulletin.

After eating, schedule a prayer time for the Gateway cities for that day.

Innovative restaurateurs will ask their host or waiter / waitress for cultural clues from the Gateway city!”
Thanks John!

“JUST HEARD ABOUT THIS COOL TAPE” DEPT.

Here’s a tape that should be available starting Monday, called, “Make a Difference: Mobilizing Your Church to New Mission Vision.” Sounds great and judging from the stuff Proclamedia has put out before, it should be great. We’ve already ordered ours by calling 719-380-0505. Also you can call 800-426-1342 to be put in “The Loop” from Intercristo, Berry Publications, World Christian, and others. Apparently this is some kind of communication loop for missions mobilization announcements and resources, especially as they relate to placement and vision. We saw it in a brochure from Bill and Amy Stearns regarding their “What’s After October?” Seminar mentioned below.
--------------------------------------

WANNA COME TO CINCINNATI?

Now’s the time! Bill and Amy Stearns are doing a “What’s After October?” Seminar that they’ve been cooking up for quite some time. It’s finally here! … in Cincinnati, Oct. 21. Save your pennies because the cost is a whoppin’ (are you ready for this?) $10! I love it! These “wanna-get-rich” seminar leaders host these one-day deals for $95 or more… and along come Bill and Amy and Faith Bible Church and say, … “Well…., is $10 too much?” I love it. Folks, this is a great model for the rest of us. Let’s keep our stuff affordable where possible. For information, call the host: Faith Bible Church. 513-489-1114.

TAX TIPS FOR MISSIONARIES

This past week, we were referred to the “Weber Case” from this past summer, still being ruled upon, but apparently already affecting certain Christian missions. I called with fear and trembling to the EFMA headquarters and asked for someone who might be able to help me figure out its impact for our own mission, Team Expansion. They referred me to Capin Crouse (Indianapolis, IN, Tel: 317-882-1514, email: rebourneataoldotcom  (rebourneataoldotcom)  ) and sure enough, those guys were on the ball. They’re specialists in helping non-profits like mission organizations with tax and accounting problems and opportunities. Bottom line? John Butler there said, “Generally, it [(The Weber Case)] should not affect most mission organizations, since in our experience most ordained missionaries are reported on Form W-2. Their reporting obligation will not be affected. Mission organizations which report compensation to ordained missionaries on Form 1099, however, should be concerned. The reasoning in the court’s decision will make it harder to use Form 1099 for most missionaries, and ministers of churches.” So there you have it folks. If your mission agency or organization is using 1099s at the end of the tax year, better run… not walk… to Capin Crouse for advice. By the way, those guys feed their families from the money they get from people in our situations who ask them questions and depend on them for answers. Expect to pay just a tad for tax help. :-)

THIS WEEK’S GLOBAL GLIMPSE

Algerian ethnic Berbers are coming to Christ through dreams, visions, and God’s Word. “One of my friends died in a traffic accident. The next night, I dreamed that we drove to a bright gleaming city. Later, on guard duty in the desert, a white bird flew by and hovered over me, watching me. I had never seen anything like it. Later, in Switzerland, I saw a picture of that bird in a Christian bookshop – it was the Holy Spirit. Then when I saw a video about the heavenly Jerusalem, I was amazed to recognize the city which I saw in my dream about my dead friend!”

WANT TO BUY A SMALL COUNTRY?

Apparently the Muslim world does. Read all about it in the The Malawi Times, 6/9/93, p.1. Apparently, the Kuwaiti government has pledged to grant $640 million to basically buy Malawi! Christian Resource Ministries, headquartered in Malawi, is sending out copies of the article, asking people to pray. There are reportedly two conditions: A. The Malawi government should declare itself a Muslim state, and B. Arabs should be allowed to open and run most businesses in the country, and enable free (immigration). [Note from Doug: Hey, I don’t make this stuff up; I just report it! :-) And after all, ever hear the word, “Crusades”? It was everything you’re reading about here without the money, except I guess we were the guys taking over.] According to the article, apparently, “…the controversial point arises on how the government will be Islamicized. Cabinet ministers and democratically-elected members of Parliament are the ones shouldering the (burden) of how to convince the entire nation, comprised of different denominations, to surrender the country to Muslim domination.” Would someone write these people and find out if this is legit’? Where can we find this Malawi newspaper on the INTERNET? First one there gets a share in a downtown restaurant, . . . as long as you’re Muslim. (Thanks to Chris Hart 102365dot735atcompuservedotcom  (102365dot735atcompuservedotcom)   for the forward.)

FROM “THE HONEYMOON’S OVER” DEPT., UZBEKISTAN

Open Doors reports that a law has been passed to block the distribution of Christian literature. Elements of the law:

  1. all literature must be checked by the KGB before it can be imported;
  2. religious material printed in Uzbekistan must have the permission of the Uzbek Muslim Council;
  3. foreigners carrying anti-Islamic literature can be expelled.

Open Doors associates are advising them not to import any more Christian literature, since all containers are being thoroughly checked by customs. Evangelism is now forbidden; Christians may not rent public buildings. Congregations may not register officially. The church is free to hold services inside a church building, but all other activities are forbidden. Local Christians believe all foreigners will be gone within a few years; Open Doors work will have to go underground. “PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW II” CONTINUES

Prayer warriors have walked through North Africa and now to the Middle East in their spiritual journeys lifting up the needs of 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window. The results have been dramatic. Several churches have asked members to “adopt” a particular city for prayer throughout the whole month. One example, the Bachelor Creek Church of Christ, is situated in Wabash County, Indiana (home of the “Wabash Cannonball”), where Senior Minister Tony Thomas has helped lead the church to an Easter high of 1447 and an average attendance of 734 people. Bachelor Creek is hoping that by November, they’ll be able to discern where in the world God wants them to start a brand new congregation among some “least reached” people or city, in conjunction with Envision ’96. With a 1.3 million dollar building to pay for, they don’t know where they’ll get the money, nor do they know where the missionaries will arise. But leaders there say not to worry. This past Sunday morning, Tony prayed, “Father, what we have here is an Agatha Christie mystery unfolding. We don’t know where you will lead us, but we know you are powerful enough to do so.” Speaking of the 100 Gateway Cities Prayer emphasis, one church member said, Sunday evening, “This morning meant so much to me. Just seeing those pictures [in the video presentation, Light the Window], made me want to do something. Always before, I thought only missionaries could be involved. This morning helped me see that everyone can help because everyone can pray.”

There is a two-page follow-up story about Bachelor Creek. If you’d prefer to receive the article by email, send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line as the body of the text of your message:

LIGHTING THE WINDOW… FROM THE PACIFIC RIM

Thanks to Gene Brooks 74114dot440atcompuservedotcom  (74114dot440atcompuservedotcom)   for posting this update on “Praying Through the Window!” “I wish you could have seen it yourself. You think Bev’s prayer on the ‘Shine Your Light through the Window’ music makes you cry, well, you should have seen a room full of recovering drug addicts from the back alleys of Singapore pouring out their hearts in prayer for Ouagadougou, Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli. They had never heard of these places, but they knew what it is like to live without Christ. Their Cantonese and Mandarin voices created a din of intercession in the back room of our halfway house run by Community of Praise Baptist Church. These were only 17 of the least of the thirty million who prayed that day, but I am sure that their fervency for the unreached helped move mountainous strongholds in North Africa. These guys who have wasted their lives on drugs preached me a sermon that day: If these unknown recovering addicts and idolaters have the audacity to assault boldly the throne room of the Most High and claim a hope and a future for themselves and Muslim North Africans, then how much more should we commit ourselves to the Task God has set before us?”

“SHINE YOUR LIGHT” THROUGH THE WINDOW

Want to feed your stereo or CD player with something that will focus on a series of prayer sessions and worship songs that will lead you right into the 10/40 Window? Try “Shine Your Light Through the Window”, a new cassette/CD from New Life Church (sponsoring church for the Christian Information Network). To order, call 800-500-9804 (overseas callers can use 719-594-6602 or fax to 719-548-9000). They ask $15 for the CD and $10 for the cassette. Worship leader is Ross Parsley. Prayer leaders include Fred Markert, Doris Wagner, Luis Bush, Appiana Arthur, Chris DeWer and Beverly Pegues.

EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE WORLD…MORMON-STYLE

That’s right. One of the best little summaries about the countries of the world is available from our friends in Provo….. Utah, that is. They’re called “Culturegrams” and there’s one for just about every nation on the planet. (PO Box 24538, Provo, UT 84602-4538 — Tel: 800-528-6279 Fax: 801-378-7075) The whole set is $105 retail, but rumor has it that if you can convince them you’re educational, they’ll let you have the set for $70. The new set, just out, now includes Cuba, Ukraine, Eritrea, Georgia and a bunch of other places never before written up. So… collect one and all and read about the culture, the language, the politics, the geography, the people, the works!
--------------------------------------

SEEKING SIKHS

Only one reader had the audacity to ask what “Matt. 5:33” had to do with seeking sikhs… and he guessed right. It was supposed to be Matt. chapter 6, verse 33. Sikh ye first. Then he went and pointed out that “Sikh” is pronounced like “sick” which is what I then became when I realized …. oh, you understand.

Moderators Rick Garza rgarzaatxcdotorg  (rgarzaatxcdotorg)   and Midge Crossman workshopsatcapricadotcom  (workshopsatcapricadotcom)   are eager to help publicize your mission opportunities. The job-shop is a moderated forum, meaning that your postings go first to the conference-owner, then get passed along to everyone else. But they’ve worked hard getting it up and running, so we suspicion that they’ll scramble to help match mission options with people willing to fill them. So if you have a need in a particular country or city, and especially if you have the means to pay for it, post it! Likewise, if you’re in the mood to switch vocations, “job-shop!” This conference was born through a real live situation where a Brigada participant offered work to a person written up in a previous Brigada Today. Check it out! They’re ready to serve!

ALL 100 CITIES COVERED BY PRAYER JOURNEYS, AFTER ALL!

Thanks to Mark Wilson, co-Coordinator of the Praying Through the Window II “Praying for the 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window” emphasis, who wrote this past week to inform us of a 100% response: “CIN just reported to me that Friday evening a team signed up to go to Tripoli, Libya. Although this particular team did not sign up as a direct result of Brigada, I believe the combined conference prayers of those who saw this need caused this team to respond to God’s call. PTL for His faithfulness. I expect other teams will be mobilized as well.” “Praise the Lord for his faithfulness” is right! Thanks for writing, Mark!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE

“Middle East Christians are attending a training school to prepare them for their key role in missions. This month students from Egypt, Iraq, Syria, and Jordan will gather by the Red Sea for an Arabic / English Discipleship Training School run by Youth With A Mission. The three-month classroom phase, emphasizing ministry to Muslims, will be followed by a ten-week outreach for students to work alongside local churches.”

THIS IS IT – OCTOBER PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW STARTS THIS WEEKEND

Okay, folks… this is the month the world awaited. Join the 50 million (probably literally) people on Sunday as we kick off ” Praying Through the Window II, Praying for the 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window“! All the hubbub (is that how you spell hubbub??) won’t mean a thing unless you dig out those 8 1/2 x 14 brochures and carry them around with you starting Sunday. If we say we’re missionaries or mission executives but don’t take this thing seriously, well… “Should I not be concerned…?” was a line that God used with Jonah about another city, as I recall. Join Him in that Godly concern and pray for the 100 Gateway Cities.
--------------------------------------

PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW II RESOURCES

We’ve received some great responses on Praying Through the Window II. In fact, we’ve just wrapped ’em up in a file and put them out there where you can pull ’em in. To receive nine pages full of ideas on how to mobilize your church during October for praying for the 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window , send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line in the body of the message text:
get brigada 100gwcideas

By the way, if you’ve lost that 8 1/2 x 11 brochure, the entire list of cities is included as a portion of this resource packet.

Of special importance is the AIMS homepage, now located at:
http://the700club.org/AIMS/AIMS.html
It would be a great place to explore as each day passes through October!

MATING GAME

Sure enough, within the next two weeks, we’ll be premiering a conference that will be attempting to match people with mission opportunities around the world. God has raised up a pair of super moderators for this task.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE

A young guerrilla in Colombia tells how he was assigned to blow up a church but could not: “The following morning, heavily armed, I forced my way into the church. I ordered the pastor to baptize me. He murmured something about Bible classes which I needed, but changed his mind when I pushed the barrel of my gun into his ribs. I was baptized on the spot, and have served God without interruption since.” He now visits and encourages persecuted Christians in Columbia’s mountains.

MISSIONS CLIP ART – WHERE IS IT?

A Brigada participant emailed this past week looking for good quality clip art for missions brochures and the like. We ran into a general package, ClickArt – 800-986-2537 — 25,000 images for $50. In addition, Kingdom Graphics (2713 Mt. Vernon Av., Willow Grove, PA 19090, Tel: 215-657-5888 Fax: 215-657-4847) has a specific Missions Graphics set, (many are in encapsulated postscript, but most in ‘tif’ format). Are there others? If you know of one, please send it to BrigadaCoordatxcdotorg  (BrigadaCoordatxcdotorg)   with subject, “Clip Art”.

HELP FOR MISSIONARY KIDS

Barbara Haas aa3141atfreenetdotloraindotoberlindotedu  (aa3141atfreenetdotloraindotoberlindotedu)   is looking for a ministry that seeks to help missionary kids who are suffering from less than best adjustment during their younger years. She’s in touch with one who needs help. He’s “been suicidal since his teen years. He was sent off to boarding school and never learned to communicate with his parents.” Note that we’ve already suggested Narramore and MKNet and she wasn’t looking for that… She wanted something that would allow him to talk these problems through. If you have an idea, please correspond directly with Barbara about it.

YIKES – THE MISSING LINK! (CAN YOU FIND SOMEONE HEADED TO TRIPOLI!)

Just this morning, we received this message from Mark Wilson markdotwilsonatcbndotorg  (markdotwilsonatcbndotorg)  , co-coordinator of “Praying Through the Window II”:

     Doug,
We got Beirut covered but now we have no teams registered who are
going to Tripoli, Libya. Hopefully someone on Brigada might help us
again with this information. Thanks!!
Mark

All right. Who can we think of that might be on a cruise to Libya??? “WEB SITES YA GOTTA’ CHECK OUT” FOLLOW-UP

Last week we shared Greg Slade’s “find” at http://bible.acu.edu/ctt. This past week he informed us that the URL: http://bible.acu.edu/ctt/ctt-home.htm is a better way to access the page, since it retains more in-document links. Try it!

“SUPPOSE WE KNOW THIS TRILINGUAL GIRL…” FOLLOW-UP

Thanks to the several who contacted us immediately after our mention of a trilingual willing servant, in last week’s Brigada Today. By the end of the day last Friday, calls were already going out to her!!! In addition, we think a possible moderator (for the newly proposed conference on placement in Christian opportunities) has been secured.
--------------------------------------

THANKS FOR THOSE WHO WROTE RE: “THIS WEEK’S [ATTEMPT AT] HUMOR”

Thanks to the half dozen readers who immediately sent notes regarding the inappropriateness of last week’s “joke”. They pointed out accurately that,

  1. at least one of the names mentioned has not been convicted as guilty,
  2. all the men are black, thus possibly portraying blacks in a bad light, and
  3. Brigada is a family of networks about missions and that kind of humor has no place here.

Wow. Sorry gang. I mentioned to those who wrote that I was so naive that it didn’t even occur to me that all 3 guys were black and that the joke might be sending a message to those sharp enough to listen for it! As a result, I’m asking for your forgiveness in posting the joke in this venue. It has already been removed from the worldwide web version.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE

The largest prayer initiative in the history of the Church will be this October. Fifty million believers worldwide will participate in Praying Through the Window, II: The 100 Gateway Cities. As of August 31, 99 of the 100 cities are scheduled to be visited by a prayer team and 95 are slated for two or more teams. Beirut, Lebanon is the only city still without a team registered. [See update below!]

BEIRUT IS NOW COVERED!

Thanks to Mark Patterson, of Global Mapping, Inc., who was faithfully reading his Brigada Today when he noticed there weren’t any prayer teams marked down for Beirut. He immediately put the Christian Information Network in touch with a friend who happened to be taking a group over this fall. He was sure they’d make a portion of their trip into a prayer journey and he was right! Now, as a result of working together, all 100 Gateway Cities will be covered by on-site prayer teams!

BRIGADA CONFERENCING PROTOCOL NEEDED

The following message was recently overheard on one of our sub-conferences:

“Please, please, will everyone please put a footer on outgoing messages so that readers can be assured that they have the whole message! I don’t want to rattle anyone’s cage nor upset their day, but I would like to know that I have it all and that something has not been lost in transmission.

“Please also keep private messages off the net.

“As long as I am on my soapbox, I will also ask that we not begin our messages with, “Dear Dick…” Who’s Dick? Also, if we are replying to a question or anything, it will be most helpful to quote enough of the prior text so that the reader knows what’s going in, otherwise it is as so much blather and clogging up the airways.

“Please, also, may we not perpetuate a subject line through several incarnations to the point where it no longer bears any connection to the subject at hand.

“I really believe in networking for my work would be literally and truly impossible without it. Brigada and its sub-conferences was an idea long overdue in coming and my hat is off to everyone responsible for its creation and ongoing operation. But, it will make it easier for everyone if we can observe some few guidelines of protocol.

“Please take my words in the spirit of helpfulness that they are offered even though some spirit of frustration cannot be avoided.

“I recommend that someone in authority prepare a set of protocol guidelines, the observing of which will make networking easier for everyone. I know that this is anathema to some but they do help.”
[Thanks to Dave Nesmith for a heroic job getting us started in this work!]

The above already form the basis for some primary protocol for participation in multiple-speaker conferences. (“Mailing list” conferences, such as Mission Frontiers won’t get quite as much out of this discussion, of course.) If you’d like to add more, please send it to BrigadaCoordatxcdotorg  (BrigadaCoordatxcdotorg)   with subject line “Protocols”. We’ll try to assemble a standard set that can be downloaded by any and all interested. Thanks!

SEND IN YOUR BEST “100 GATEWAY CITIES PRAYER EMPHASIS” IDEA

Compose a paragraph about how your church is rallying to feature the 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window in “Praying Through the Window II” and send it to BrigadaCoordatxcdotorg  (BrigadaCoordatxcdotorg)   this week, with subject line, “100GWC Ideas”. We’ll feature the top ten in next week’s Brigada Today. If your idea is used, you’ll get a free Brigada t-shirt. (As always, neither Brigada employees nor their families are eligible to compete.) [Of course there are no Brigada “employees”! In fact, there aren’t even any t-shirts!!! :-) ] Don’t forget to include an idea or two about how you will not lose sight of praying for the 100 Gateway Cities personally.

HOW TO REACH 10,000 BRIGADA PARTICIPANTS

Well, we all know how we could reach the 10,000 subscribers mark. With just four partcipants short of 1000 readers this week, we could reach the 10,000 mark very easily if you were to just forward this Brigada Today to 9 or 10 others and invite them to participate. Make sure they know to send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   (not DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg and not brigadaatbrigadadotorg) with only this line:

That’s it!

WANT TO START AN EMAIL CONFERENCE OR NEWS LIST ON YOUR GATEWAY CITY?

It’s easy.

  • Join CrossConnect by sending a note to Cathleenatxcdotorg  (Cathleenatxcdotorg)  . She’ll send you detailed information about how to do it. It’s $52/year and gives you a “friendly” email address (after which your email is “forwarded” through CrossConnect to whatever service you choose to use that day or week or month!), conference moderator privileges, etc.
  • Send a note to BrigadaCoordatxcdotorg  (BrigadaCoordatxcdotorg)   explaining the city or people group for which you’d like to moderate a list or discussion. You’ll soon receive easy step-by-step instructions (with lots of examples) on how to create the new conference.
  • Send the create commands to BrigadaCoordatxcdotorg  (BrigadaCoordatxcdotorg)   for final error-checking and consistency cross-checks. Within 48 hours or so, you’ll be in business! There are no “per message” fees or on-going monthly charges to either you, your network, or your users.

Questions about CrossConnect and its policies??? Write Cathleenatxcdotorg  (Cathleenatxcdotorg)  .
Questions about Brigada conferences? Write BrigadaCoordatxcdotorg  (BrigadaCoordatxcdotorg)  .
Thanks!

ANNOUNCING THE BIRTH OF: BRIGADA-MEDICINE-FOR-POOR

Thanks to Matthew Grant MatthewGrantatXCdotOrg  (MatthewGrantatXCdotOrg)   and his vision for the poor… and for medicine for the poor! He’s gearing up for a new Brigada discussion group. He writes, “This conference is a discussion on helping medically in poor countries. Christians and non-Christians are welcome. The intent is to foster discussion about projects that could provide or assist in providing effective help to poor people, and to provide a place where people can get together and find others who could help them in this area. A lot of the discussion could be of a technical nature, as the founder of this group is interested in fostering discussion of how the Internet and Computers can be used to help in 3rd World medical situations. If there is a lot of traffic, separate groups will be formed. Those from Mission organisations [I know, I know… It’s a “z” on this side of the world but after all, he is from New Zealand!] are welcome to join. It would be interesting to have your input into this topic and to hear about your experiences. The founder hopes and prays that this conference can help you further your work.” To join, just send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with the following line in the body of the message text:

SUPPOSE WE KNOW THIS TRILINGUAL GIRL…

Okay, so suppose we know this trilingual girl… Chinese (that’s her first language), French (that’s professional translator level) and English (that’s…. hm… acceptable conversation level). Suppose she’s looking for a job in ministry somewhere and she’s willing to move anywhere in the world and work for just about any salary. How would she find a job? What if someone in the Brigada family were to moderate a conference for “job placement”. A kind of “volunteer clearinghouse.” Those looking for a mission/ministry position would subscribe and send a message to the conference reporting their skills/gifts. Those offering a position would subscribe and send a message describing the opportunity. Anyone interested in moderating such a conference? (Note that according to MAF/CrossConnect’s new policies, all moderators need to join CrossConnect at $52/year to get an XC.org domain as well as several other benefits. Hey… someone has to pay the bills.) Oh.. I almost forgot. Got a paid position for this trilingual gal? (She has two degrees, by the way.)

THIS WEEK’S GLOBAL GLIMPSE

The Jesus Film, a movie based on the Gospel of Luke, has been presented to over 700 million people according to Campus Crusade for Christ. In the 220 countries where it has been shown more than 41 million expressed interest in becoming Christians. Over 400 mission organizations use this film, which is available in 325 languages.

HOW ‘BOUT THOSE LOUISIANAMOBILIZERS

There is only one state in the union that has asked to form its own mobilization/discussion conference in the Brigada family of networks and it is the great state of Louisiana. [Can you hear the cheers in the background?] [Well then maybe your computer doesn’t have multi-media sound installed??? :-) ] We’ve seen them at work this past week, for instance, as one conference member asked for more info. on Bethany’s role in tackling prayer profile preparation for AD2000 & Beyond. A Bethany staffer responded with an update and several faithful fellow Louisianaians (what is the proper term? :-) ) have now volunteered to pitch in and help with the colossal project of preparing prayer profiles for all 2000+ least reached people groups that AD2000 & Beyond will be lifting up for church planting. Regardless of how things come out on this particular challenge, the outcome is that the world Christians in Louisiana are taking their role seriously… seriously enough to get together and do something about the unreached! Thanks Louisiana! (To join the conference and get free seafood samplers at their bayou shrimp-fests, send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line in the message text:

MISSION FRONTIERS TO FEATURE JOSHUA PROJECT

Thanks to Rick Wood for his tireless efforts in promoting global outreach in the US Center’s Mission Frontiers. In response to our note thanking him for the latest (Sept.) issue, he responded this past week, “I am glad you liked the latest issue of MF. The next one may be the most important that we have ever done with the introduction of the Joshua Project 2000. We are also wanting to get as wide a distribution for this issue as we can. We are wanting to see people send it to missionaries, pastors and mission agency and denominational leaders. We are contacting the Adopt-A-People agencies to see if they want extra copies of this next issue so that we have a good idea of how many we need when we go to press. Could you put a notice in Brigada Today for people interested in extra copies of the Nov.-Dec. 95 Joshua Project 2000 issue? Have them contact me by email at RickWMFataoldotcom  (RickWMFataoldotcom)   and give me their name, address, phone, position or title, if they are with a church or mission agency, and the quantity desired?” If you’re viewing this on www, you can probably just click on Rick’s address and write him here! Otherwise, dash him a quick email and ask for info. on the Joshua Project issue. As Rick said, this could be the most important issue of Mission Frontiers to date!!! And don’t forget, you can subscribe to MF electronically and get it right here on Brigada. HAVE YOU REGISTERED YOUR INTEREST IN A PEOPLE GROUP?

I did it this week. Okay, I admit. I was partially just interested in seeing if it would work. But it did! Earlier this week, I talked with a missionary to India, on home service here in the USA. He had attended a mobilizers’ luncheon we had sponsored in Indianapolis and on his form he volunteered to help however he could with the least reached. While talking with him, I learned that his church of 80 Tamil-speaking Indians was located roughly 10 miles or so from the area in South India where the unreached Yanadi live. There is no church among the Yanadi yet and I asked this gentleman if his church in India could help. He was most interested. I committed to trying to help organize an effort to reach the Yanadi. First, I logged on the worldwide web and pointed my browser to the Brigada home page, then clicked on “Reaching the Least Reached”, then on the “People Group Consultant (PGC).” There, I put the word “Yanadi” in the box and hit “search”. Within a few seconds, I had all kinds of information on the screen, including population, language, country, Ethnologue code, etc. They were listed as being in “World A” — another way of saying the 10/40 Window — and they were unreached. At the top of the form is a place to click on the “Adopt-A-People Clearinghouse”, to register my interest. I clicked there and sent a brief note explaining my hopes to rally interest in the Yanadi and serve as a temporary volunteer “People Specific Advocate” (if there wasn’t one already). Within 5 hours, I had a fax in my box from Adopt-a-People Clearinghouse with more information, including the status of reached-ness, the language family group, and a very nice intro. letter from Evie Bowers, who is currently handling email for the AAPC. I also copied my letter to John Hanna, who serves as Advocacy Manager for Caleb Project (a mobilization group from Colorado), and to Brigada-Peoples (a conference that specializes in trying to see people groups “adopted”). You should see the nice notes I got back from people who were encouraging me in my efforts for the Yanadi. I found out that my role was to “Learn, Link, and Love” (thanks John), and I learned about others that have become advocates for nearby groups. I even know their location down to the hundred-thousandths of a degree latitude and longitude!!! :-) I’ve no excuse now. I know exactly what to do. I urge you to register your adoption or even your interest. (And by the way, look me up in the PGC. John Hanna’s already got me posted! :-) Just follow the instructions below and search for Yanadi. Cool. I’m famous!)

  • Look up the people group in the People Group Consultant (point your browser directly to http://www.xc.org/pgc.html or send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following lines in the body of the email message (searching, for example, for data on the Yanadi people group):
    search Yanadi
[ special secret — at your own risk, you can also experiment with the new beta page at http://www.xc.org/pgctest.html but don’t tell Jonathan Marsden that I told you!!! :-) Remember, it’s still experimental! Check it out. Lots better options… search by country, language, the works!]

  • Send a message to Brigada-Peoplesatxcdotorg  (Brigada-Peoplesatxcdotorg)   sharing your intent (John Hanna and others monitor and will pick up on your message).

  • Send a message to aapcatxcdotorg  (aapcatxcdotorg)   (either from the www page, where you can click on the button, or just from your regular email software). Register your intent to reach a group. That way, if others are interested, they’ll be able to contact you. Remember that you need not mention anything secure or sensitive, such as the exact towns where you or your agency/church is working, nor any names of new believers or missionaries. All you need do is mention that you’ve “staked a claim” and accepted responsibility for reaching that piece of the least reached world.

Wow. Let’s do it.

ONE MORE CITY TO CROSS!

Throughout the past year, many have joined together in planning for the “Praying Through the Window II” campaign. And with just 20 days remaining until we jointly pray for the 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window, many prayer journey participants are packing their bags to “pray on site with insight!” The Communications Director of the AD2000 & Beyond International Office in Colorado Springs wrote this past week that “341 different teams will take 546 journeys with some teams traveling to more than one city.” Certainly, God is at work throughout our world!

There’s just one problem. We’re missing someone! David also wrote of a one particular city with no prayer journeys scheduled. And Mark Wilson of CBN, a co-coordinator for the 100 Gateway Cities Prayer campaign, wrote, “On our monthly committee conference call this past Wednesday, Beverly [Pegues, of the Christian Information Network,] updated us on the prayer teams going to the Gateway Cities. She reported that Beirut, Lebanon, is the only Gateway City that does not have a team registered to do on-site prayer. The inability of U.S. citizens to get a visa because of the State Department’s discouraging travel there obviously has prevented Americans from visiting Beirut. However, Europeans and others can get in with no problem. Could you announce on Brigada our need to have a team(s) go to Beirut? If anyone out there is planning to go but is uncommitted, or is waiting for God to speak, well, he’s speaking. “Go to Beirut!” Beverly and Ted want to emphasize the sensitivity of Americans going into Beirut and that this is not for novices. Preferably non-Americans should go. Thanks for getting the word out.”

So…. here’s where we get down to it, gang. Who among us knows someone that is already traveling to Beirut? Would they consider dedicating a portion their journey to prayer? And since we’re just 20 days away (and desperate! :-) ), who among us knows someone already in Beirut!?! Would they be willing to dedicate a portion of their time there? If so, contact Beverly at CIN: Phone (719)522-1040. Fax (719)576-2685. Email 73422dot3471atcompuservedotcom  (73422dot3471atcompuservedotcom)  to Colorado Springs.

PROJECT JOSHUA UNFOLDS

The more we learn about AD2000 & Beyond’s Project Joshua, the more we like! According to a letter received this past week from John Robb (and Jim Brown), Project Joshua “will encompass prayer, partnership, guidance, research, media and communication, database management, mobilization and implementation.” John is Coordinator of AD2000 & Beyond’s Unreached Peoples Track. He says the present conceptual objectives for Project Joshua are:

  • Complete the Field Research of the 2000 least evangelized peoples by April 1997
  • Hold GCOWE follow-on gatherings for Country and Track Coordinators, Mega-church pastors, mission executives, students, etc.
  • Call over 30-50 million Christians to join in the “Praying Through the Window II event in October 1995 for the 100 Gateway Cities
  • Call over 50 million to participate in prayer for the 2000 Least Evangelized Peoples in “Praying Through the Window III” in October 1997.
  • Prepare and deploy the ground force of church planters
  • Form a ministry Partnership for each Unreached People, bringing together different efforts in a synergistic, integrated approach.

ANOTHER ADDITION TO THE “GOTTA GET THERE” DEPARTMENT

Give Tammy Sullivan a chance. According to one Brigada user, “she’s got dogged determination!” While many other agents catch the easy-to-get fares off the computer, Tammy specializes in hard-to-find wholesalers who sell fares at volume discounts, then she passes along the savings to clients. Plus, this past week, for the benefit of Brigada users, she obtained an email account: tammygregataoldotcom  (tammygregataoldotcom)   — so try her . . . you might like her! (If you want to use the old-fashioned technology, call her at “Travel” at 800-513-8293 or fax her at 513-753-8293 in Cincinnati, Ohio.)
--------------------------------------

“BUT HOW DO I SEND A WORD PROCESSING FILE THROUGH THE INTERNET?!!!”

Get Wincode. It’s a free piece of software that allows you to encode a binary file (like a word processing document, or spreadsheet, or desktop published file) into ascii characters (which is what is used for email), so you can incorporate these files into your email messages . Often, a particular file might break out into 5 segments, depending on its size and your mailer’s limits. Wincode handles all that seaming transparently. If you have www access, get it at: http://www.interlog.com/~artpro/wncode.zipfor wincode Otherwise, if you don’t have graphical access, get a similar DOS text-based program called UUEncode/UUDecode by sending email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)  with only the following line in the body of the text message:
get brigada uuexe521.bat

Uuexe521.bat will come wondering into your email inbasket soon. Just save it as an ascii file, then execute it as if it were a batch file. It works! This file comes complete with all the instructions you’ll need. Warning: As with all software, make sure it works before you leave for an overseas position!

PRAY FOR SOUTH AFRICAN START-UPS

What do you get when you put Patrick Johnstone in the same room as Keith Butler (new director of the Adopt-a-People Clearinghouse), side by side with Philip Botha (South Africa’s people group “adoption” coordinator)? Well, at the least, you get a lot of interest in reaching the world’s least evangelized people groups! Thanks to Marv Bowers and others who alerted us to the conference just wrapping up in S. Africa. Wow. S. Africa’s going to be a hard act to follow!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE

Here’s this weeks Global Glimpse for you to put in your church bulletin or newsletter. “Amid the violence of war, evangelical churches are starting in Bosnia-Herzegovina, World Relief reported. In the eastern city of Tuzla, where more than 30,000 people have taken refuge, an evangelical church is providing relief and baptizing new believers. In the eight months since it began, 23 people have been baptized and 45 attend regularly. “We are seeing a steady stream of people coming to know Jesus, where there were no evangelical believers before.”

CLOSE-UP ON BRIGADA-PEOPLES

Wondering what those 100+ people are talking about on the Brigada-Peoples conference? Lots!

a) When a church or agency wants to announce an adoption (regardless of whether it happened yesterday or in 1990!), they do it on Brigada-Peoples. Immediately, a mysterious character called “the friendly face” (you’ll have to try it to learn more; I hate to spoil the mystery! :-) ) swoops down out of nowhere, confirms the data, then posts it on the People Group Consultant (PGC) so that others may know of your interest.

b) When a church or agency wants more information about a particular people group (especially when they came away empty-handed on the PGC [though we hope that in the future, that won’t be happening very often]), they ask on Brigada-Peoples and 20 volunteers swoop down out of nowhere and say, “My 2nd cousin attended a funeral once and met this lady whose dog was trimmed by a man who worked with this one church that adopted that group — stand by and I’ll get the info….” You think I’m kidding. (Well… maybe I am a little bit…) But they really do try to find connections there. They try to put you in touch with someone who can get you info. on the group you’re wanting to reach. Like recently, when someone asked for info. on the Brahui in Pakistan. I had to chuckle. “What are the odds ….!??!!” Well into the conference walks Randy Roberts randyratlfadotcom  (randyratlfadotcom)  with a complete description and an invitation to network with several other churches he knew of which had adopted the … Brahui! “They are some of the poorest people in Pakistan, they are in greatest concentration in northern Baluchistan and just had a large portion of the New Testament translated into their language this year,” he says. Yikes. I hadn’t even heard of these folks, let alone prayed for them. Guess that’s why we’ve got Brigada-Peoples.

c) When a church or agency wants to share a testimony of how prayer works or how the particular church or agency went about getting started, they do it on Brigada-Peoples. For example, this story was recently relayed by Brigada-Peoples moderator, Dave Dougherty DDoughertyatXCdotOrg  (DDoughertyatXCdotOrg)  : “This week some of our missionaries from all over East Asia were in Denver for our Home Assignment Institute. I heard a story which really encouraged me and I want to pass it along to you. This couple had been working among the Lantan people of Southeast Asia. They had met much resistance to their efforts to establish relationships and develop friendships in the Lantan village where they lived. Now Steve picks up the story:

“In December 1994, we returned to our home after a two month absence in which our first child was born. Lantan people immediately began coming to our house on a daily basis, looking for work, seeking help with medical problems and asking for help in getting off opium. Villagers began coming from several different villages, some walking as much as six hours to reach our home.

“Through many contacts came informal opportunities to tell people about Jesus–a name they had never heard before. One opium addict had heard from a visitor that Jesus was greater than all the spirits. Upon arriving at our house he asked, ‘Can Jesus help me quit smoking opium?’

God has begun to focus our personal ministry and opportunities after an extremely difficult and dry period of work among these people.”

What made the difference in December 1994? Steve continues his story, “Then this year, in February, we learned that back in October 1994 a church in Minnesota had “adopted” the Lantan people and began praying for their evangelization. Prayer makes a real difference. Keep praying for the Lantan.”

Adopting people groups makes a difference. Prayer makes a real difference.

So there you have it. Now — to join Brigada-Peoples, send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)  with only the following line in the body of the message text:
subscribe brigada-peoples

That’s it. Get involved. Maybe you don’t have time to read every message. So… few of us do. But scan the subject line… and glance at the message and see if you can help someday. If you can’t, hit the big “D” key and (to quote one of Brigada’s tech friends, Bob Sutterfield) send it to the “bit bucket!” :-) At least you tried. And even though you might be getting 100+ email messages per day, taking 5 seconds to pray for the “Sulung” people or whoever …. well, isn’t that what being a world Christian is all about? So if somebody comes on board and you can’t help, at least take a second and pray.

--------------------------------------

FROM THE “GOTTA GET THERE” DEPARTMENT

Before you can actually tell someone about Christ, ya gotta get there! And David Householder davidhousholderatxcdotorg  (davidhousholderatxcdotorg)  says he knows someone who can help. Evidently, Debbie Mortell does bunches of trips for some of the largest missions in the world…. like OM, for example. Evidently saves ’em big bucks. (Course, we don’t know anyone who wants to save big bucks, now, do we.) Try her at Tyrone Travel, 1-800-682-2122. She’s a Brigada subscriber and, hey — we gotta support the home team! :-) Can you email her? Does a jet have wings? Of course you can! 75113dot1476atcompuservedotcom  (75113dot1476atcompuservedotcom)  or fax her the old-fashioned way, with slick paper and all, at Fax 770-487-4089. You can even write her snail-mail at 135 Commerce Dr., PO Box 370, Tyrone, GA 30290. Either way, give her a try and tell her you heard about her on Brigada. Maybe she’ll send you a free fruit basket on your next cruise! :-)

WE’RE NOT RUSHIN’ INTO RUSSIAN

Thanks to those who gave input on Russian language opportunities by subscribing to Brigada-Russia and throwing out the ideas. However, the sparse answers confirm our suspicions that we’re way behind on giving on-site workers the language training opportunities they need!
--------------------------------------

SO YA WANNA BE IN THE FUNNY PAPERS, EH?

Well here’s your chance.. to write them, not actually be in them, that is. Nate Butler NateButlerataoldotcom  (NateButlerataoldotcom)   wrote our WebMaster, Bob Mayhew, via the Brigada WorldWide Web page to tell him about a unique conference coming up in the Philippines in January. It’s the First International Christian Comic Book Training Conference. “A group of professional comic book writers and artists (from the U.S., Philippines, and Colombia) will be teaching missionaries, Christian workers, and others how to create, produce, and market comic books to impact their cultures with the Gospel message,” says Nate. Email Nate and ask for the free brochure or see them on the www at: http://www.xc.org/icmc/catalyst/vol12/comics.htm

And you thought funny papers were only for kids!

NO SERMONS?

Not a single taker has responded on our appeal last week for a five-week sermon series for October. Guess that means no one else is planning on preaching one??? See the “ONLY 36 SHOPPING DAYS ‘TIL OCTOBER” note last week… or just send your ideas to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg  (DougLucasatxcdotorg)  and by doing so, help a lot of others!

WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT “HOPE FOR EUROPE”?

The 10/40 Window isn’t the only place where networks are forming these days. Check out Hope for Europe, which is “…helping Christians in Europe convey the contemporary and eternal hope of the Gospel.” HFE is an initiative of the European Round Table, co-sponsored by the European Evangelical Alliance and the Lausanne Europe Committee, interfacing globally with the AD2000 & Beyond movement, Lausanne International and the World Evangelical Fellowship. The main office is in Vienna, Austria. “We are in the process of developing a WWW home page,” says Ron Kernahan, Hope For Europe Communications Track Director. WANT A LIST OF BRIGADA CONFERENCES?

Easy. Just send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line in the text of the message:
conferences

… and in five minutes or less, you’ll receive a message back in your inbasket listing all the Brigada forums currently at work. To join one (you must join one at a time — that way you can focus on your major interest area), just send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)  with only the following line in the body of the message text:
subscribe [conference]

… where [conference] is replaced by the exact name of the discussion group you’d like to join. Keep in mind that some groups are private (so you might get a kind word explaining it’s ‘by invitation only’) and others are screened (so you might be asked for references, for example, in a conference on a restricted access country).

As an alternative, if you have access to the worldwide web, just visit the Brigada homepage and click on the list of Brigada conferences. It’s easy to join directly from the web page by following the instructions on-screen. Just fill in the email form with the line above.

--------------------------------------

PEOPLE GROUP CONSULTANT WHRRRRRRS ON!

Thanks for the feedback on the People Group Consultant (PGC). We’re listening! (To use the PGC, send an email message to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)  with only the following lines in the body of the message (if, for example, you’re searching for data on the Khalka Mongol people group):
search Khalka Mongol

The hub computer will email you the results within a few minutes… usually less than five. For other people groups, obviously, replace the words Khalka Mongol with the name of the group you’re researching.

For EASIER ACCESS, use the WORLDWIDE WEB INTERFACE [If you have full access to the worldwide web (Compuserve, America Online, Netcom, etc.)]. Either start at the Brigada Homepage: http://www.xc.org/Brigada/brigada.html then click on “Reaching the Least Reached Peoples”, then on “People Group Consultant” or, alternatively, just point your browser to: http://www.xc.org/pgc.html

Fill in the blank with the name of the people group then hit search. In a few seconds, you’ll see your results!)

Jonathan’s already hard at work fine-tuning interface suggestions and by the looks of his test form, it appears he’s been very successful at answering requests! For example, several users requested the ability to search for people groups by country — done! The test page can already do it! Others asked for the ability to search by language. Done! Again, this is still in beta — but it already works. Still others wanted to search by Ethnologue entry, ISPD code, and/or ROPAL code (What do these guys do?? Sit around and read the Ethnologue on cruise ships with tickets bought from Tyrone Travel, or what!). Whatever they are — ROPAL codes and all– it’s pretty much on its way out the door … in beta. (Isn’t “ROPAL” a funny-sounding word? Go ahead. Wherever you are…. at your desk, in the library, at home on the couch.. just say it out loud a few times in a row…. Your spouse will understand. No one will laugh… very hard… just say it kind of “chicken like” — “ROPAL, — ROPAL, — ROPAL… Now isn’t that a funny word?) (Actually, it’s a very helpful code that enables linguist to distinguish between various language groups. By assigning one key index code to each different group, translator-types can figure out how much work there is left to do. Honestly, it’s a helpful term. Sure sounds funny though. :-) )

So hang in there while we fine tune this baby. There are improvements in the wings. The beta page will probably become the working page any day now. (Just pray that Jonathan doesn’t get carpal-tunnel syndrome! :-) ) In the meantime, go back and try the worldwide web page again. Just fixing the “upper case/lower case” significance will help some users. (Now you don’t have to capitalize the capitals to capitalize on the info. My 2nd grade teacher sure passed over me when it came time to teach me the difference between those spellings! :-) )

And once again, we owe a HU-U-U-U-U-U-U-U-GE debt of gratitude to John Gilbert and the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Church for making his Integrated Strategic Planning Database (ISPD) available to the public. Hey, at $15 for the 5-disk set, you could always just order it then use the disks for extra blanks in your office!!! (I’m kidding, but the ridiculously low price illustrates the FMB’s and John’s commitment to making this incredible data available to the whole world! Plus, remember that they gave it away free to GCOWE delegates from majority world countries. If you’d like to order a copy to install on your own computer, write John at 753-8054atMCIMAILdotCOM  (753-8054atMCIMAILdotCOM)  or, if you’d rather save his time (so he can do more research and less email :-) ) simply go ahead an send a check for $15 to:
Global Research
PO Box 6767
Richmond, VA 23230

Don’t miss the fact that you can now click on John’s definitions from within the PGC results. Just look for the “sbc status” box, where you’ll see a classification such as “World A” (which originally stood for “Access denied” but has come to be somewhat synonymous for the 10/40 Window — even though it can be more broadly applied to the least reached peoples who are being denied access who live outside the 10/40 window; actually, John, that wasn’t such a bad idea, you know? :-) ), “Unreached”, or “Unevangelized”. Click on the word and you’ll be taken to the Definitions file. John hopes to update the ISPD data each April.

WHERE DOES JUSTIN FIND THESE GREAT RESOURCES?

Check out this URL: gopher://gate1.zedat.fu-berlin.de/00/mongolei/mongfaq.unx

Just plug it into your address line on your www browser (“browser” — now that word makes me think of a dog you’d put out front to protect your house!) and hit enter. This frequently asked question file (who are they kidding! Did anyone think up these questions about Mongolia before they thought up the answers??? :-) ) tells you everything you ever wanted to know about emailing your favorite Mongolian pen-pal… and a whole lot more. Honestly, I wish this kind of page were done for every country in the world. Thanks, Justin Long. (Now then, Jonathan, how do we fix it so users find this URL when they search for people groups in Mongolia from within the PGC? Can you work that magic too?) (To find out the answers to this week’s “‘Seek ’em Jonathan’ Challenge”, give him until Sept. 7, then go look for the people group known as.. say… the Khalka Mongol. Check to see if he’s figured out how to automatically return the URL above… and whether or not you can click to it! “Seek ’em Jonathan!”)

WHAT’S THE JOSHUA PROJECT?

According to AD2000 & Beyond’s Media and Communication Director, it’s AD2000 & Beyond’s new initiative to provide prayer profiles and other data on the 2000 Least Evangelized Peoples by the year 2000. This past week, David wrote, “Things here at the AD2000 and Beyond office in Colorado Springs have been humming as many have worked long hours on the foundation of “Joshua Project” which has at its core the revised list that was published at GCOWE ’95. Praise God that Marv Bowers will be able to provide the merged list for Brigada Peoples. (I did my test search on the Qashqai of Iran [on the PGC] and got some data back. Wonderful!) It is now a good time for Mary Ann Stone the Joshua Project AD2000 Coordinator to join this conference [Brigada-Peoples] so I will subscribe her.” David gave endorsements from John Robb (Coord. of the AD2000 & Beyond’s Unreached Peoples Track), Patrick Johnstone (Author of Operation World and Chairman of AD2000 & Beyond’s Unreached Peoples Track), and Todd Johnson (of David Barrett’s office and ISFM), all of which seemed to support the list of 2000 people groups that AD2000 & Beyond is zeroing in on.

So what happened to the extra 500 (from the “2500 list” that was circulated at GCOWE)? Good question. Maybe those mission networks have been really busy and have polished off 500 groups since May? NOT. Truthfully, there were several discrepancies in the list. But that’s the way lists work. There will never be a perfect list. As Pete Holzmann quipped, “We’re shooting at a moving target!” And we’re using more than one kind of gun, too, I might add. It has taken these months since Seoul for Luis Bush and others to bring various participants to consensus as to which goals to shoot for. I say bravo that the participants didn’t give up. They hung in there until they reached agreement… and that agreement finally seems to be unified. Bravo. We’ll see the “2000 list” (Watch for the new watchword… we’re already seeing it… “The List – Two Thousand Peoples by the Year 2000”) published by November… maybe earlier.

WHAT’S AFTER OCTOBER? PLENTY, ACCORDING TO BILL AND AMY

Can you stop by and visit us in Cincinnati on October 21? If so, take in Bill and Amy Stearns’ “What’s After October?” seminar at Faith Bible Church, 1-5pm. Registration is $10 (including a free book, Run With the Vision!). “With the momentum of Praying Through the Window II and the October 21st evening Concerts of Prayer,… with Faith Bible’s promo and our own, it should be a fun time of equipping dozens of churches with how to get mobilized! Anyone else doing one? If so, we’d be glad to send/fax the brochure, outline and share the handouts, etc., that we’ll be using.” For more information, contact Bill and Amy Stearns at stearnsatusadotnet  (stearnsatusadotnet)  . (Actually, that was just to get your attention, … but…) We’re searching for a church or individuals from Massachusetts or New England who are active this October in the Praying Through the Window II campaign for the 100 Gateway Cities. A big-time magazine there wants to do a story on you. For more information, contact Mark Wilson at href="markdotwilsonatcbndotorg.">markdotwilsonatcbndotorg. GLOBAL GLIMPSE

In 1992 researchers reported no more than 50 indigenous Christians among the 7.6 million inhabitants of Azerbaijan. However, today, according to an English missionary in Ganja/Azerbaijan, a church has been founded there which is now attended by 800 people each week. It is not unusual for 50 people to be saved each week through this church and recently almost 300 people were baptized in the Caspian Sea.

OKAY — SO MAYBE YOU CAN RENT FOR $500 IN CAIRO

Thanks to a friend (who we’ll call Amahd) who says you can so rent for $500 in Cairo — instead of the $1200 reported in Brigada Today, 18 of August. ($500… $1200… at least we were close! :-) ) Our friend, Amahd surmised correctly, we believe, that those Pulse figures came from diplomatic sources. So the bottom line is, Amahd, next time you visit Cairo, you can hopefully stay with your favorite diplomat there and have a whole lot nicer pad that the one you rented! :-)

BURNING QUESTIONS

A bunch of us have been scratching our heads, wondering how in the world one part of Christendom might get word to the other parts about a need among a particular people group or city. As for me personally, I’m a relative newcomer.

Because of a project I was asked to coordinate (called Envision ’96), I started asking such questions just this past February. “Where do the least reached people live? How can we find out which groups have no proponents — i.e., people trying to reach them? And in cases where at least one church or agency has taken responsibility to reach them, how can we get a phone number or email address to get more information?”

So, after lots of interviewing, faxing, and questions to people all across the world, Brigada was born. That has been our driving question. How in the world can we find answers to these and other questions. Out of it, well over 800 people have rallied together to form dozens of email conferences targeting various peoples, cities, projects, and issues.

But we still couldn’t find the answer to a simple question: Who in the world cares about reaching the Yemeni? And what of the Sulung?
It was impossible — until this morning. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

--------------------------------------

OUR QUEST!

What we were all dreaming of was a way we could simply plug the name of a people group or city into some huge machine somewhere and “… whrrrr… ssss… grrrr… thump, thump, thump, THUMP!” — out would come the people group location, language, population, Ethnologue reference material (that’s a big reference book about languages by the people who write them down for us: Wycliffe :-)), . . . virtually all kinds of data… and (the most important part) pointers to resource people and contacts who might be able to tell us more! Real live people who knew about the Sulung and the Yemeni . . . or whatever group or city for which we were burdened. Specifically, we wanted to be able to get phone numbers for people who had the inside scoop, so that, once they were sure I was who I said I was, they could tell us how much help they needed there and more importantly, what kind of help would be appropriate.
Those were our questions… until this morning.!!!!!!
--------------------------------------

THE PROBLEMS

The problem was that we don’t by nature work together. We live in different houses which are located in different towns which are organized in different counties which make up different states or provinces which form different countries which are separated into different continents by the oceans of water and culture which divide us. Besides, we were always scared of security concerns. And additionally, what kind of technology would allow for the design of such a machine, let alone the construction of it!
Well those were our problems… until this morning. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-------------------

BUT STARTING THIS MORNING, THINGS ARE DIFFERENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-------------------

“… WHRRRR… SSSS… GRRRR… THUMP, THUMP, THUMP, THUMP!”

Sometimes dreams do become reality! Guess what. You got it. You’ve got the little box that goes “… whrrrr… ssss… grrrr… thump, thump, thump, THUMP!” You think I’m kidding. But I’m not! Guess what else. If you got this Brigada Today by email or the WorldWide Web, you can use the little box that goes “… whrrrr… ssss… grrrr… thump, thump, thump, THUMP!” all by yourself, the same way you got these paragraphs!!! Don’t ask me why God is using the INTERNET to finally answer our questions… maybe it’s the vision of the people who started CrossConnect (the agency that laid the foundation to make possible Brigada — and PGC, by the way!). Maybe it’s MAF (the people who are paying the bills at CrossConnect :-); Ahem! Let’s not forget them! [Sublimital message — gently whispering in what sounds like the breeze outside your window: Join CrossConnect! Join CrossConnect! Send them your $52 for a one-year subscription. Join CrossConnect! For more information, contact Cathleenatxcdotorg  (Cathleenatxcdotorg)  .] :-) They don’t pay me; I’m a volunteer working with Brigada. So I’m just a customer. But they’ve sure made some dreams come to reality for many of us!). Maybe it’s all of us working together… or maybe God just wants a job to be done and He’s ready to use us if we’re willing to be used. After all, didn’t he use a donkey in the Old Testament to try to talk some sense into a mixed-up profit . . . er, I mean PROPHET??? If he can use a donkey, maybe He can even use the 800+ people who have joined together to form Brigada! Maybe He can use you! Maybe previously, it would have been nearly impossible to find the answers.
But that was before this morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
--------------------------------------

THE PRICE!

Want to hear the best part? The price has been paid. (Not only for our sins on the cross, but also . . . ) Here’s how much it’s going to cost you for every single access to the little box that goes “… whrrrr… ssss… grrrr… thump, thump, thump, THUMP!”:

That’s right. Zilch. Zero. 0. Nada! The number that takes its shape from the top of the toilet bowl! No hay que pagar nisiquiera un peso! (We’re talkin’ a deal here folks.) But that’s not because it’s been free to develop it. The truth is, it has taken years for people to have obtained the data, built the vision, acquired the technology, and learned the skill to bring this little box to reality. Well, starting this morning, it’s here. Welcome to the PGC.

--------------------------------------

INTRODUCING… THE PEOPLE GROUP CONSULTANT (PGC)

Let me tell you all you have to do. If you have email, you send a simple message to (you guessed it! :-) ) hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)  (hey — this hub thing is no fool, is it!). Compuserve users — they’re different — will have to spell the address as INTERNET:hubatxcdotorg but either way, just put this in the text/body of the message:

search yemeni

or

search sulung

or

search whatever people group you can think of.

Simple. Nothin’ to it. In five minutes or less, log back on and get your email. “… whrrrr… ssss… grrrr… thump, thump, thump, THUMP!” There in your inbasket it will be. I’m serious folks. Just try it. I dare you. Think up a people group and I betcha’ it’ll already know the answer!!! 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, even on Christmas and Easter, the PGC will be there to help.

--------------------------------------

IT GETS EASIER!

Got access to the worldwide web? (In other words, know anyone with Compuserve, or America Online, or Prodigy, or Netcom, or nearly every other INTERNET carrier in the business?) It’s even easier. Point your browser to the Brigada homepage: http://www.xc.org/brigada/brigada.html

I’ve set up my Netscape browser so that Brigada is the default page that comes up every time I log onto the worldwide web. Where else would I want to go? :-)

Scroll the page down a bit and click on the line entitled, “Reaching the Least Reached Peoples.” In a moment, you’ll see a page with various resources listed and at the top, beside a graphic of little globe, you’ll see the line, “People Group Consultant.” Just click it.

In a split second you’ll be there: ( The direct address is actually http://www.xc.org/pgc.htmlif you want to skip the Brigada stuff. Hey. It won’t hurt my feelings either way. I get paid the same no matter what. That’s right. “Zilch. Zero. 0. Nada! The number that takes its shape from the top of the toilet bowl! :-) )

It’s the People Group Consultant, alias the “PGC.” Read the disclaimer (at least the first time), then scroll down and fill in the blank with the name of some people group. (Maybe someday you’ll be able to use a city name, or a country, or other stuff. For now, just use the people group.) Go ahead. Try it! Humor me. Listen to the “… whrrrr… ssss… grrrr… thump, thump, thump, THUMP!” and in 5, 10, or 15 seconds (depending on how fast your modem is — with 28.8 it’s about 2 seconds; with 14.4 it can take longer… up to 10 or 12), out’ll come your answer. Just like in the movies!!! Can you tell I’m excited about this or what. Put in the Sulung. Then try the Yemeni. Then try one you heard about years ago. They’re all there.

--------------------------------------

NOW COMES THE HARD PART

Reaching them! There are well over 10,000 groups already programmed in, thanks mainly to the kindness of

a) John Gilbert and the Global Research division of the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board, who plans to update these data — The Integrated Strategic Planning Database — on a yearly basis each April.
and
b) Jonathan Marsden. Jonathan works for CrossConnect. He’s the genius that makes the box go “… whrrrr… ssss… grrrr… thump, thump, thump, THUMP!” I think in a former life he was named Edison or Bell or something. For now though, he just stays up all hours of the night making dreams turn into reality. From all of us, thanks Jonathan.

Within the next few days, there will be even more data available. Just last night, the Adopt-a-people Clearinghouse made a firm decision to contribute their data. Yowza! This is what their work is all about. Their new Director, Keith Butler, has made a clear-cut decision to back the PGC all the way. Others are scrambling to try to link in data from PIN, Wycliffe (Thanks Ron!), the Urban Leadership Foundation (then you’ll be able to put any one of several thousand cities into the blank!!! — thanks Viv and Leland!), and many more. The AD2000 & Beyond “adoptions” will be plugged in as they occur (Thanks Luis and Pete!).

--------------------------------------

SAFE AND SOUND

In every case, the integrity of the data will be preserved. We will never be listing information that might put anyone at risk. For example, if you ask for information about some group in the Middle East, PGC’s email pointers and/or phone numbers will refer you to information people but not on-site teams. (By the way, it will then be up to the contact person to decide how much and what type of information to release at what time and to whom. Everyone gets to broker their own private info. at the level they prefer. They can always join CrossConnect and get a forwarding email address so they can use the address info-on-Iraqatxcdotorg or whatever. Then, when they get mail, they decide what to do with it and how open they want to be.)
--------------------------------------

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

It took some marketing rep. for Microsoft to dream up the ad campaign, “Where do you want to go today? (TM)” But that’s the question, folks. Where do you want to go? Now you’ll have the data. The hard part is reaching them. Can’t wait for next week. Where do you want to go? Now you can make informed decisions. You know what else? The eventual goal is that you’ll be able to fill in forms and actually add the information yourself and even make future changes to your own record! This is 1995 gang.
--------------------------------------

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Tell the PGC about your church’s “adoption” or your agency’s intentions to reach…. _______ (fill in the blank). Specifically, when you enter the query form, the fourth bullet down from the top, click on “Adopt-A-People Clearinghouse.” If you’ve configured your browser correctly, up will pop a form letter to fill out. Write them a short paragraph. Not 30 seconds ago, I sent a paragraph saying that our organization, Team Expansion, has adopted the Muslim Crimean Tatars on the Crimean Peninsula of Ukraine. I gave our contact person’s name, his phone, fax, addresses (both snail mail and email :-) ), and said thanks. That’s it! The staff and volunteers at the AAPC will then take care of making sure your data is properly entered in the PGC. It’ll be viewable before you know it. Only when we take time to enter our intentions will the PGC really start paying off. Until then, it’s just a lot of “… whrrrr… ssss… grrrr… thump, thump, thump, THUMP!” :-)

HAVE YOU ORDERED YOUR MAP TODAY?

Remember, you’ve only got about 3 more hours to order your quantity of 100 poster-sized maps of the 10/40 Window at the $3.95 price from GMI. Call them at 1-800-569-6312 or, from outside the USA, fax to 719-548-7459.

Remember these are prepaid orders only. (Yikes! I just remembered I haven’t phoned in our order! [Doug pauses to phone Harold Britton……] I’m back. Harold said, “You know Doug, what we want here at GMI more than anything else is for people to gather all over the world and pray for these cities and nations like never before.” Amen Harold.)

GLOBAL GLIMPSE

Here’s the Global Glimpse for you to put in your church bulletin or newsletter:

A young man from the Vietnamese “Tai Dang” tribe was sent to jail unfairly and met pastor Ai who was in jail for his faith. The young man became a Christian, was released, and went to a local Bible School which requires students to share their faith with five people. A month later the young man called pastor Ai, asking him to send a trained pastor to baptize the new converts. Astonished, Ai asked why he should send a pastor to baptize 5 converts. The reply: “Pastor Ai, I have not won 5 people but 5 villages – 753 people.”

FROM THE “LET’S GET SERIOUS ABOUT VISION” DEPARTMENT

Ya know, I always thought that if a person was highly technical, highly skilled, highly process oriented, then they would probably be pretty scared about bulging growth. Not so with Jonathan Marsden, who manages the technical end of CrossConnect and, as such, helps with Brigada technical projects. When I asked him this past week about how he felt about Brigada growing past the 800 mark, I was surprised to hear him say he wasn’t satisfied. “I won’t be happy until we have 10,000 people on board, with hundreds of conferences about least reached people groups and cities all over the world.” Wow. When I grow up, I want to be like that. :-)

BEEN LOOKING FOR A STUDY BIBLE ON-LINE? NOW’S A GOOD TIME TO BUY!

To celebrate the release of Logos 2.0, Stepping Stone Software is offering the complete inventory of Logos Bible study products for 33% off. I bought mine direct from Logos, some time ago, for complete list. Yikes. Get this. I paid $120 for mine and could have gotten it from Chad at Stepping Stone for $84!!! … in CD form! What’s more, Version 2.0 adds a lot more. (If you’re viewing this Brigada Today via the Worldwide web, click Stepping Stone to see the full bulletin on this special offer. If you’re looking at a piece of email in your in-basket, send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line in the text of the message body:

For further information, write to Chad at chpatixdotnetcomdotcom  (chpatixdotnetcomdotcom)   or look at Logos’ home page at http://islander.whidbey.net/~logos/ — and don’t forget to tell them you saw it in Brigada Today. Who knows… they might throw in a free mousepad or something. (That’s a joke :-) .)

WHA’ D’YA MEAN 3479 MESSAGES!????

After last week’s item on Brigada- Peoples (“GET A PIECE OF THE ACTION ON BRIGADA-PEOPLES”), at least one person wondered how anyone could filter through 3479 messages in one week! (Okay, we’ll admit it… that would be a lot of email!) Sorry for any confusion. That’s 72 participants who received 48 different email messages (48 x 72) in one 7-day period for a total conference traffic report of some 3479 pieces of mail. To make things clearer in the future, if we refer to conference traffic again, we’ll refer to the number of unique messages rather than pieces of mail.

GET YOUR VIDEOS . . . FROM DOWN UNDER

Looking for a series of videos to feature some unique “least reached” peoples? Check out Create International’s “Video People Profiles.” Calvin can send you tapes on Tibetan Buddhists, the Zhuang people of China, the Manchu, the Aceh, the Sundanese, the Deccanis, the Kashmiris, the Urdu Muslims, the Malays, and many more. But you get the idea. Each video is US$20 plus $5 for postage and handling… sent via air mail from ‘down under’. ANTIOCH NETWORK HOLDS ANNUAL GATHERING

What do you get when you pull together 100 church leaders from 38 different congregations? An Antioch Network Annual Gathering, that’s what. THIS WEEK’S GLOBAL GLIMPSE

Christians in Bosnia are uniting for prayer. Aug. 18-23 local believers and church leaders will meet in Mostar with representatives from World Vision, the US Center for World Mission, and the Christian Information Network to seek God’s intervention and bring reconciliation in this war-torn region. Afterward, these prayer emissaries will travel to the Muslim refugee camps near Tuzla, for prayer and to encourage local Christians reaching out to the refugees. (Thanks to Global Glimpse contributor John Hanna, of Caleb Project, who caught this note in a letter from Missions Frontiers Editor, Rick Wood, 8/13/95, US Center for World Missions.)

MAPS, MAPS, MAPS

WE’VE GOT MAPS — Remember a long time ago (last week), when we were trying to raise up some map possibilities for the 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window??? Well Global Mapping has heard our cry (and the cry of several Brigada readers who want them) and has come up with a few possibilities. If they get lots of orders (on the order of hundreds or thousands), their prices drop accordingly. If Bill Dickson has to sit there all night with coffee in his mug, watching them come out of the plotter one at a time because you and I didn’t order but two or three dozen, we have to pay the following prices:

Gateway Cities Wall Map 20″x30″, Full Color $19.95
Above wall map, fully laminated $29.95
Full-Color Gateway Cities Overhead trans. $6.95
Full-Color Gateway Cities 8 1/2″x11″ Map $6.95
Black & White Gateway Cities 8 1/2″x11 Map $6.95
10/40 Window Overhead Transparency Map Set $34.95
“Pray through the Window II” Package $74.95

(each of the above with lamination on wall map free)

APARTMENT FOR RENT

According to Pulse Magazine, you can rent a simple 2 -bedroom apartment in the following cities for the following prices:

Sydney $1100 Cairo $1200
Buenos Aires $1500 Paris $2150
NY $2300 London $2950
Moscow $5000 Shanghai $6300
Tokyo $7100 Hong Kong $7200

Didn’t know you had it so good, right? (Yikes. Just who do these landlords think they are, anyway???) Now we know what all these missionaries do with their money. They pay for apartments! The nerve! If you’re not receiving Pulse [only the best little missions news magazine there is], odds are, they probably won’t let you through the pearly gates. Fax them at 708-653- 0520 and tell them you heard about it in Brigada Today… and while you’re at it, send them one of those free America OnLine email disks, okay? :-) (Jim — read my lips — email!) :-)

WANT A FREE WORLDWIDE WEB HOMEPAGE?

(Aaaaahhhh. Now this one caught your eye, didn’t it!?) :-) Contact MediaMgmtataoldotcom  (MediaMgmtataoldotcom)   and tell them you heard about it in Brigada Today. They’ve got this new land of “Goshen” that will give you your homepage for free… and then I think someday they’ll start charging for “Extended WWW Services” and that’s how they’ll pay the electric bill. In the meantime, it’s a great deal. Let us know your URL, when you get it.

SO HOW MANY PRAYER TEAMS ARE HEADED OUT IN OCTOBER?

As most of you know, one of the features of Praying Through the Window II is to send prayer teams to the actual 10/40 Window to pray in the 100 Gateway Cities. (This is not to imply that God hears prayers better when you pray on site, but rather, that you probably pray more effectively and more informedly onsite, among other things.) We asked Bev Pegues, who is co-coordinating the 100 Gateway Cities project and were amazed at the response. “At this time, we have approximately 500 teams consisting of 2 to 7 people each, traveling to the Gateway cities in October.” That should do it all right! Let’s stop a moment and pray for these ambassadors, asking God to raise within them a passion for the Window that won’t quit, in spite of visa difficulties , amoebas, and whatever else Satan will throw their way! Then let’s determine to join with them to pray to the Lord of the Harvest!!!!

READ ABOUT ONE MINISTER’S APPROACH TO PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW II

If you’re reading this Brigada Today on Worldwide Web, click Florence to read about Tommy Baker, Associate Minister at First Church of Christ, Florence, Kentucky. (Otherwise, send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following line in the body of the text:

Among other things, Tommy is recruiting an “adoption” from within his church for each of the 100 Gateway Cities. He’s on the ball. You’ll get practical application from this article.

THANKS TO THE “ANSWER-MAN”

Now and then, we all are asked a question that we can’t answer… and that’s when you need to know about “The Answer-man”. Dave Nesmith popped in this past week on Brigada-Peoples and showed why he, probably more than anyone else in the industry, deserves this title. Someone had asked for information on someplace far away and… sorry to say, there had been precious little response. Up walked David to the plate, knocking a home run with email addresses and contact persons galore. If you’re stumped about anything missions oriented — “Where do I find out about opportunities in southern South Pole?” (well, nearly anything) — write Dave at Daveatgmidotorg  (Daveatgmidotorg)  . You’ll be glad you did. And so will he. His job is to serve the missions community in this way at the DMIS, in affiliation with Global Mapping. So… thanks GMI and thanks DMIS and thanks Dave!

BRIGADA WORLDWIDE WEB PAGE IS “A WHOLE NEW WORLD”

Some scientists say its inconceivable that God could have created the world in seven days. But judging from the pace that Brigada volunteer Bob Mayhew and wife, Patti, have kept in transforming the Brigada web site, maybe God did use 24 hour periods!!! :-) Bob and Patti have worked night and day cleaning up and refreshing the Brigada www pages. Among the changes they’ve instituted, in their new roles as Brigada Web Master and Artist, are:

  • New artwork and cleaner appearance throughout (Patti’s the artist of the family . . ., and, needless to say, we think Bob has “good taste”!) :-)
  • Updated the Brigada Today backissues
  • Added a section to list the 100 Gateway Cities
  • Added a section on Praying Through the Window II
  • Added a “Links to other web sites on the 10/40 Window” section
  • Updated the “Conferences” page and added a column listing the number of participants in each conference
  • …and many, many more refreshing changes.

Those of us volunteering as Brigada staff have been praying for some time that God would bring an HTML code specialist to the table for Brigada’s future, but we had no idea He would bring someone as dedicated as Bob Mayhew .
Professionally, he is a computer consultant at the University of California’s Riverside campus, where he is responsible for PC support for Academic Computing in the Computing & Communications department. He’s been working a PC helpdesk for 13 years! As far as HTML goes (the code language for www pages), he began teaching himself 4 weeks ago! (From the Understatement Department: Bob must be a fast learner!) Bob heard about Brigada from Paul Lay, who works with MAF (the “parent company” for CrossConnect; CrossConnect acts as host for all Brigada conferences and worldwide web pages). Paul and Bob attend the same church in California and Paul mentioned Brigada during a recent meeting there. When asked about his spiritual walk, Bob replied, “I would like to say it has been a constantly growing experience, but like most of us my walk with the Lord has had its ups and downs. This is an up time for me. The Lord has been teaching me a lot recently.” From the looks of his worldwide web work, one of the things the Lord is teaching Bob is HTML!!! :-) We salute you, Bob Mayhew, and thank you and Patti for your sacrificial service on behalf of the hundreds of believers who want to see the least reached peoples come to Jesus! Visit Bob’s world (the Brigada homepage) by pointing your www browser to: http://www.xc.org/brigada/brigada.html

FAMOUS QUOTES DEPARTMENT

So “Q” has transferred the entire Enterprise crew to a “Robin Hood” adventure game, right? Picard is face to face with the Sheriff of Nottingham, in a sword fight until death. The Sheriff chokes out, “I’ll have you know that I’m the greatest swordsman in all of Nottingham!” [Clank! Clank! Clank!] So Picard replies, with that winsome smile, “There’s something you should know…” The Sheriff asks, “And what might that be?” Picard: “I’m not from Nottingham!” Needless to say, the Sheriff, shall we say, ‘got the point’. What does this have to do with world evangelism? Ummm … er…. Well you see, Satan wants us to think we’re overpowered, you know? He wants us to see ourselves as outwitted, because he’s the ruler of this present darkness. But our reply needs to be firm and clear: “We’re not from this Kingdom.” Now then. See? It did relate. :-)

SPECIAL EDITION — BRIGADA TODAY “EXTRA”
Hey!!! Someone out there listened… and has already ordered!!! (Of course , it doesn’t hurt matters when ACMC decides to send them out to all new members and all existing member churches!!! ) The price of the GMI 100 Gateway Cities maps have just gone way down, thanks to overwhelming interest on the part of the people!!!! Now, you can have a full color 20″x30′ map of the 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window for just $3.95 (in quantities of 100 or more). Single orders are $9.95. Lamination prices remain the same (added $10). All orders must be prepaid. This is literally 1/2 the price we stated just 8 hours ago… (Hey — maybe if we wait through the weekend they’ll be paying us to take them home!!! ) (Not likely.) And for orders of 100 or more, it’s less than 20% of the price mentioned in this morning’s Brigada Today.

So what’s the difference? I’ll tell you what it is. It’s God’s people working together… that’s what it is.

So call, write, email, fax, or drive on up to Colorado and get those maps, folks. (But don’t call me — I just brag about ’em. I don’t sell ’em!) :-)

GREENBRIER CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP TO OFFER CALENDAR FOR KIDS

Bonnie, of Greenbrier Chr. Fellowship church, clued us in this week on a new prayer calendar for kids that her church is making available. “The format is similar to the adult calendar [for Praying Through the Window II], with some notable exceptions,” Bonnie noted. “The kids will be praying for one city per day instead of three or four. The type is larger, includes a pronunciation guide for the city right next to the name, and includes one prayer request for each city. We’ve included more pictures, including some of kids, which were all done by Mary Filidis who created the art for the adult calendar. The introductory section includes a very brief description of the non-Christian religions included on the calendar and references to other helpful materials, most of which you included in your VBS info — video by the Parishes, Light the Window video, etc.” To get Greenbrier’s kids’ calendar for the 100 Gateway Cities, contact the church sec’y, Rebecca , at Greenbrier Christian Fellowship, 1101 Volvo Parkway, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Phone: (804) 547-7777; Fax: (804) 547-5096. Greenbrier is allowing the samples to be copied freely. And get this… copies — both the sample on lime green and the one on white suitable for photocopying — are provided by Greenbrier at no charge!!! Bravo Greenbrier! Thanks for setting the pace! (If you have questions that Bonnie might be able to answer, email her at bonniedotkyleatcbndotorg  (bonniedotkyleatcbndotorg)   but all actual orders should be placed with Rebecca.)

URBAN MINISTRY LEADERS OFFER BOOK AND WEB SITE

To get info. on the recent meeting in Atlanta of over two dozen urban ministry leaders, see the book they’ve published at their new web site, …

The book, Theology of the City: From Dream to Reality, is totally free. (Thanks to Steve Ujvarosy at Telchar Systems in Chicago for this tip. You can write Steve for more info. at telcharatinteraccessdotcom  (telcharatinteraccessdotcom)   or go see the book for yourself!)

GET A PIECE OF THE ACTION ON BRIGADA-PEOPLES

Brigada-Peoples continues to grow, both in subscribers (now up to 72!) and in messaging (There were 3479 individual messages exchanged on the forum this week — an average of 7 per day, read by every subscriber). Not only is it growing in subscriber base, but also in purpose. Jonathan Marsden has agreed to pull together a starter database using PH technology that will add significant capabilities to the CrossConnect conferencing system. Users will be able to send a message such as “search people yemeni” or “search city montevideo” and thereby get email addresses and other pertinent information on those who have agreed to target or “adopt” the Yemeni and Montevideo. In addition, one will be able to specify whether he/she wants the adoption registry for that people or the prayer profile, or both. For the first time in history (at least as far as we know), you’ll have a one-stop source for adoption information and global outreach “pointers” for learning potential opportunities and networkers. To join the discussion in process, send an e-mail message to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with this line as the body of the message:

COMPUSERVE CORRECTIONS

Thanks to Justin Long, who voiced the opinion, “Remember, Doug, that although CIS is the largest worldwide (which works out well for missionary types) AOL is still the largest in the United States. And has a MUCH better WWW reader, too!” Truth is, we received several responses after the special Compuserve update, lifting the qualities of one service or another. I’m afraid I didn’t make our purpose clear. There are about 609 Compuserve users in all the 40 Brigada conferences combined. Our purpose was to let those users know that, within a matter of a few weeks, Brigada was going to be a whole lot better deal for them! It will, on Sept. 10, be free, just like it’s been to AOL users all along! (As long as you don’t dilly dally around on line, that is. Five hours is five hours!

NORTH KOREAN BIBLE DISTRIBUTION

Thanks to John Hanna who submitted the following “Global Glimpse” this week…. “All of NORTH Korea’s school children may soon be studying the Bible. Assist Ministries of Garden Grove, California, reports that a “Bible as Literature” program is being considered which would put New Testaments in Korean and English in the hands of every school-aged child. Dr. Dale Kietzman also acknowledged that Kim Il Sung was inquiring seriously about Christianity before his death.

LOOKING FOR ADOPTION PAPERS???? THE WAIT IS ALMOST OVER!

If you’ve been wondering who adopted who… (or is that who adopted whom or whom adopted whom??? I missed that grammar lesson! ), you’re in luck. Soon, Brigada -Peoples will provide, in conjunction with a host of other organizations, agencies and churches, a worldwide web search engine to look up which group remains untargeted — and we assume, therefore, high priority. You’ll also be able to look up contact information for people groups that have already been adopted, making it possible for churches and agencies to broaden and enlarge their project network and share resources and tools. We’re finally going to be in this thing together! Look for instructions and addresses in the very near future. (The page is already being tested on the www!) For those with email-only access (many in the majority world), Jonathan’s cooking up a parallel approach using email commands. You know what those are, don’t you. (Send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the words…. ) It’s a comin’!!! Once this project is launched, we’ll need an all out assault to try to get all the currently targeted people groups “registered”. Pretty soon, as the dust settles, we’ll know which groups we’ve overlooked in mobilization!

AT “PRESSTIME”

As of August 3, there were 676 participants in Brigada’s top level network (which sent this Brigada Today)! That’s an increase of over 75 users in one week’s time! The reason? More than anything else, probably thanks to the recent Mission Frontiers article. (Thanks MF!) BRIGADA-PEOPLES OFF AND RUNNING

Thanks to Dave Dougherty for his willingness to head up the moderatorship for Brigada-Peoples. He’s given the conference the right mission, the right agenda, and the right start-up. A sample:

> Brigada-peoples is beginning a discussion of the whole idea of
> adopt-a-people. What can be done to advance this movement linking
> congregations and mission agencies to reach unreached people groups?
> Several churches and agencies are already starting to discuss this key
> program, and your input is important.

We’re hoping that Brigada-Peoples can be a kind of “foyer” for finding out which people groups have been “claimed” and by whom. This doesn’t intend to imply that there will be an attempt to forge a one-to-one match-up. Quite the contrary… more than one church, agency, and/or network will be needed to truly plant an indigenous church multiplication movement, in most cases. But the Brigada-peoples conference will help you find the existing “adopters” for your selected group… and if you haven’t yet identified a group to adopt, Brigada-Peoples will be a source for finding information about which groups are available.

To join the discussion, send an e-mail message to xc.hub with this line as the body of the message:

PROGRESS AMONG UZBEKS!

Protestant churches are sprouting in Islamic Asian republics of the former Soviet Union. A church planted in Uzbekistan four years ago has grown to 3,000 members and has planted 55 other congregations — 22 of them in neighboring republics. “My father received Jesus and I wanted to kill him,” said a former Muslim who now assists his father in pastoring 250 people at three churches in Tajikistan.

Thanks to John Hanna, of Caleb Project in Littleton, CO, for highlighting this “Global Glimpse”. His source was Page 1, July 24, 1995, National & International Religion Report, Roanoke, VA.

HOW ONE VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL DID IT

My family and I have just returned from a week with our major supporting church in NE Ohio, the Andover Ch. of Chr. [This is Doug talking.] For Andover’s nightly VBS, we used:

  • Monday: The 10/40 Window for Kids video (from Joey and Fawn Parish, 6673 Sora Street, Ventura, California, 93003; Tel. (805) 650-3511)
  • Tuesday: Prayer-walking for Kids video (also from the Parishes)
  • Wednesday: Light the Window (from CIN, 11025 State Highway 83, Colorado Springs, CO 80921)
  • Thursday: The Ten Four-O, a music video by Bill Drake, from OM
  • Friday: The Challenge of Our Unfinished Task (from Procla-Media, P.O. Box 26479, Colorado Springs, CO 80936

In addition, each night, we displayed a big 5′ by 5′ map of the 10/40 Window , explaining practical ways kids and adults alike could get involved in making a difference there. We brought volunteers to the microphone to pray for people and countries in the Window, so others could hear examples of prayer… and we highlighted missionaries who were already at work there, changing the future. By the end of the week, the VBS Director told me that her son had said that the missions segment was his favorite part of the entire VBS! We found an overwhelming interest in what God is doing in the 10/40 Window part of the world… and we’re excited about the possibilities at Andover. One woman said, “If we can’t participate in the 100 Gateway Cities prayer campaign, what kind of church are we?” Leaders of four churches in the area are discussing how they can get together as a network to take responsibility for planting a church in one of the 100 Gateway cities. God is at work! They want to do it in concert with the Envision ’96 PACE project, where Christian churches and churches of Christ are being invited to stand shoulder to shoulder with each other to “adopt” key cities and peoples in the “least reached world.”

Either way, one thing is for sure. Those kids’ eyes were riveted to the needs of the 10/40 Window. God is at work!

PRAYER FOR GUIDANCE REQUESTED

John Robb (Unreached Peoples specialist with World Vision and Coordinator of the Unreached Peoples Track with AD2000 & Beyond) wrote this past week, “Dear Friends, Please pray and get others to pray for this situation. We need to see God’s solution.” Quoting an internal World Vision memo by Dean Hirsch, World Vision International Chief Operating Officer, John shared the plight of Bosnian Serbs.

“Morality seems to have gotten lost in Bosnia over the past three years. There’s nothing moral about expelling neighbors from their homes, then blowing up their houses so they won’t come back, just because the family is Serb, or Croat, or Muslim. There’s nothing moral about kidnapping young women and keeping them as sex slaves. There’s nothing moral about making entire villages homeless. There’s nothing moral about 200,000 deaths. And there’s nothing moral about ripping boys as young as 7 away from their mothers to join the other “men” for investigation of war crimes, as we’ve seen in Srebrenica.” … While we’re limited in what we can do to bring about a political settlement, we can call for justice for the oppressed; we can and must call for the protection of civilians.”

Would you take a silent moment this morning to remember this critical need, lifting it in prayer to the Lord of hosts and asking Him to bring some kind of lasting resolution to this moral crisis?

BRIGADA OPENS PARTNERSHIP WITH “ADVANCE”

Thanks to Mark Kelly (Compuserve 70420,1057) for the work he does on “Advance”, a monthly email and print magazine to highlight the need to pray for unreached peoples and persecuted believers. Folks, this is good stuff. Each issue works hard to feature resources for making a difference among 10/40 Window peoples. Now, in the past few days, Brigada and Advance have formed a kind of partnership, since their agendas are so similar. Advance will be available directly in the Brigada file storage area and highlights will be featured in Brigada Today . To retrieve the full August edition of Advance, send email to hubatxcdotorg  (hubatxcdotorg)   with only the following words in the body of the message:
get brigada advance.9508

The August issue contains the following main articles and items: THE GOSPEL FOR EVERY PEOPLE —

  • Summary re: status of Bible translation — at least one book in 2092 out of 6000 languages
  • DAWN India report — 200,000 churches already established on the way to 491,000!)… “One pastor reported his congregation grew from seven in 1973 to 7,400 today and has started 75 missions. He envisions 1,000 congregations in five years….”
  • Jesus Film update — “To date, more than 701 million people in 220 countries have seen the Jesus film…”
  • Baptist World Congress calls for targeting the world with “no access”
  • Tons more on persecuted believers
  • Close-up on Fulani
  • Close-up on Jakarta
  • Close-up on World A — China
  • The Cities!
  • Networking “close-ups” — World Prayer Center, resources, etc.
  • FRONT LINES — Editorial on “Our timid prayers”

Mark hopes all users will put him on their mission publication’s mailing list (Mark Kelly, 70420,1057 — or snail-mail to 8992 Midway Rd., Richmond, VA 23229)

Believe me, in this one move, Brigada has become infinitely more useful — just through association with what Mark is doing!

ETHNOLOGUE ON LINE

Have you checked out the Ethnologue online??? (Information regarding the languages of the world and where they are spoken) Try it out at…
http://www-ala.doc.ic.ac.uk/~rap/Ethnologue/eth.html
Also, check out the SIL homepage at
http://sil.org
Thanks to Matt Benjamin, who works with Ron Rowland in computer support at SIL, for this info. He’s just started a new project for SIL’s Strategic Information Office and he’d like your help. His task is a simple one: “to research missions-related materials on the Internet, … looking for and cataloging information in the following categories: countries, cities, regions (ie-Tibet, African studies, etc.), peoples, ethnic studies, world religions, demographics/population studies, anthropology,languages/linguistics,national governments, and topics related to any of these, … country WWW server lists/click maps.” So Matt, what are you going to do with all your spare time? If you can help Matt collect these resources (and no doubt put them on line somewhere so we can all see them, right Matt???), write him at mattdotbenjaminatsildotorg  (mattdotbenjaminatsildotorg)

JOHNSTONE WORKING ON “AFFINITY BLOCKS”

Patrick Johnstone (author of Operation World and Chairman of the AD2000 & Beyond Unreached Peoples Track) has a new project — affinity blocks. These aren’t a replacement for legos. Nor are they intended to replace the list of 1500-2500 groups being finalized for the AD2000 & Beyond emphasis on planting churches among the “final frontiers.” Instead, Johnstone simply wants us to be able to simplify the landscape. Watch for more details on this concept in the future… and look for it to help us see connections between our work and workers! Thanks Patrick!

KOREAN CHURCH FINISHED GCOWE WITH POSITIVE BALANCE

Ready for some news about an organization that finished something “in the black”???! Here it is . GCOWE. Thanks to some good planning and the power of His Spirit, the Korean church ended up debt-free on AD2000 & Beyond’s Seoul extravaganza! Bravo Luis, and all those working with you … and bravo Seoul coordinators! !! Even more importantly, working together ended up in the black! Take, for example, the SM2000 student missions conference, where tens of thousand Korean students pledged themselves to be available for worldwide mission outreaches. According to a recent letter from Luis Bush, AD2000 & Beyond International Director, leaders concluded, “For so many groups to cooperate was also a big first! … Yes, together we can obey the Great Commission of our Lord Jesus Christ, and yes, together we can achieve the task of world evangelization–Yes, together we can.” Furthermore, Korean church leaders in the USA have covenanted together to officially adopt 300 of the integrated AD 2000 target list at their AD2000 focused conference in Wheaton next year, and Korean mission leaders (at Torch Center) hope to adopt 100 of the list. Korean leaders have also made the commitment to “convene the denominational leaders here in Korea to adopt each of the remaining peoples on the list.” What an initiative!!! Now comes the problem of tying together a ready-to-work Korean congregation with your mission or network! Enter Brigada! Start a Brigada conference on the 10/40 Window people group you’re targeting and … presto-change-oh . . . you’ll have a Korean partner checking in… I bet. :-)

Luis Bush’s conclusion regarding everything God has done in Korea??? “Praise the Lord!” He ended his letter, “The End.” But it looks to me like he should have probably entitled it, “Another beginning!”

AD2000 & BEYOND’S LIST OF “LEAST REACHED” PEOPLES COMING INTO FOCUS

According to mail passing by our Brigada news desk, AD2000 & Beyond leaders are hoping to finalize the criteria for inclusion into a finalized list of “least reached” peoples by August 12 … just 6 days away! Pray for John Robb, Coordinator of the Unreached Peoples Track, who will need to shoulder ultimate responsibility for this burdensome task. Once criteria is finalized, Ron Rowland (of SIL/Wycliffe) and others will assemble the list that will serve as a key guide (and a measuring stick for AD2000 & Beyond) for national, regional, denominational, congregational and agency church- planting initiatives for at least the next 18 months or so.

ONE BRIGADA READER’S PRAYER

[The following overheard on a Brigada conference:] “How I thank God for His many answers to prayer, including GCOWE, Brigada, the prayer movement, your moderating this conference, David , and all that God is doing through His people for worldwide evangelization

I am so grateful for the movement to reach every people group, and am so excited about the goal to reach every person with the gospel by the year 2000! It cost Jesus such an incredibly high price to give us salvation, that I long and pray that as many as possible will be saved (I Tim 2:1-4) according to God’s will, and that all of us Christians will love Him fervently with all our hearts and please Him in every way. Our God is the greatest treasure imaginable, and we want as many as possible to have the joy and privilege of being His own and serving Him!

I grew up in Mexico, as my parents were missionaries there, and am very interested in knowing if anyone has Adopt-A-People information available in Spanish. I would like to try to get as many Spanish-speaking churches interested in adopting a people as possible (as well as English-Speaking churches).

Thank you very much for your help. I am trying to pray for Brigada, and as many of the other evangelization projects as I can daily, and hope and pray that many other Christians are praying for these things daily too.

In His Service,
Linda Knapp”

“GET A LOAD OF THIS” DEPARTMENT

Thanks to John Hanna for making his “Global Glimpses” available to us! Yesterday, he relayed…, “Global Glimpse: Since the Gulf war, 500,000 Bibles and Scripture portions have been imported into Iraq, and Baghdad is allowing limited numbers of Bibles and Christian children’s books to be printed there. Expanding religious freedom in Iraq has allowed the Jesus film to be broadcast in Arabic over Iraqi national television and in Kurdish over northern Iraq television.

2 ENVISION ’96 “PACE” CHURCHES ALREADY FORMING NETWORKS

HAVE YOU SEEN ATLAS GIS?

Are you a map-fanatic??? You need Atlas GIS. You can buy it directly from Global Mapping for $199.95, configured for Windows 3.1. Draws maps for states, countries, regions, … the works. For another $199.95, you can get GMI’s Global Mission Base Map CD, version 1.1. This gives you tons of extra data to play with, including some really cool custom work GMI has done. Atlas isn’t necessarily an easy program to learn, but once we get it going, it’ll be really handy to read in all these data that John Gilbert and GMI and others are preparing. To reach GMI, call (in the USA) 800-569-6312; FAX 719-548-7459. (By the way, they didn’t ask me to mention them, and I don’t get a cut. )
--------------------------------------

RUSSIAN FONTS, DRIVERS, PROOFING TOOLS, OCR, TRANSLATION, ETC.

If you’re into Russian (instead of maps ), call (in the USA) 1-800-256-4814 (or fax 714-552-1699) and ask for a catalogue from Smartlink. These guys are great. They can help your computer become a Russian workhorse — typing Russian, reading Russian (via a scanner and optical character recognition software), spell-check Russian, translate Russian (hey — even if it only automates about 50-80% of the process, think of the sheer time that’ll save! !!), and teach Russian. (We don’t get a cut, and they didn’t ask us to advertise them.)

HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN SINCE YOU DARED A CHURCH TO TAKE A CHALLENGE?

[soapbox mode on] [disclaimer tag on] Keep in mind, we’re still early on in this Envision ’96 thing. So it’s too early to predict with certainty how things are going. [disclaimer tag off] But one thing’s for sure. These church leaders were ready to be challenged. Imagine getting leaders together from 200 churches and asking them to each consider taking responsibility for starting a multiplying church movement in one of the 100 Gateway Cities or some least evangelized people group from the list that Luis Bush and Ron Rowland and others are preparing. I figured we’d be lucky to have five (5) sets of church leaders who would even come to such a luncheon, let alone listen! Instead, we reach our goal of having 200 show up to hear the presentation! So we ask them to complete a Response sheet and we’re interested in all the commitments we’ve numbered 1-10, but numbers 4 and 6 are key. The exact wording was:

“4) Commit — It is my personal vision to see our congregation commit to planting a vibrant new church in a “piece of least reached world.” We want to help with a “piece of the wall!” As God gives me strength, I commit to allowing His power to work within me to bring this to reality.” and…
“6) Count me in! I’ll do everything I can to help our church decide to join the Envision ’96’s PACE effort!” (PACE is the project name)

Now imagine, again… I figured we’d be super lucky to have 5 sets of leaders say yes… but gang, 3 out of 4 sets of leaders checked either #4 or #6 or both! I mean… wow! WOW! Imagine if each of us went out and dared a congregation… or congregations(!) to tackle this. Now maybe 155 churches won’t end up with an on-site team in 3 years.. Okay. Bring me back to reality. But the intention is there. These churches were ready to be challenged.

I think we’re seeing the Spirit of God move upon our globe. All the prayers have not been in vain. God is moving people to care and respond for the sake of the least evangelized people of the world. Now we need the Sauls and Barnabases who will encourage them onward to pick up the flagpole and raise it high!

[soapbox mode off]
