KEEP YOUR VIRUS DEFINITIONS UP TO DATE

virus Been putting off installing that antivirus software? Better not procrastinate any longer. The frequency of these dastardly programs just keeps stepping up… and the strength and risk are greater than ever. Norton is typically in the winner’s circle for “editor’s choice”, but anything is better than nothing at all. Better act now… or your PC will be toast.

WEBWATCH: A SITE FOR THE HAKKA CHINESE

WebWatch Hakka Church Planting Ministries has just launched a new web site that they hope will build a bridge between the worldwide body of Christ and the unreached Hakka Chinese of Taiwan. In an effort to raise awareness, rally prayer support, and release workers, this rather extensive site invites viewers to learn about who the Hakkas are, why they are so hard to reach, and how the on-site missionary team is striving to pioneer a church planting movement in their midst. The site also offers an abundance of yours-for-the-taking small group resources such as Bible Discussions, Icebreakers, and Leadership Tips. What’s more, it’s nicely done, serving as a great sample of what all mission teams could do on the web, if they only had the funding and/or the volunteers to make it happen. Check them out at: www.hakkaministries.org (Way to go John! Keep up the good work!)

USA READERS: IF YOU’RE ON THE HUNT FOR A POSTAGE METER

mailbox If you’re a USA reader and you’ve been nagged by those trips (and lines!) to the post office and back, “Simply Postage” by Neopost might be just the solution you need. For more information, click to: http://www.simplypostage.com and read all about it. There’s even a great comparison chart there so you can see all the competitive plans too. You’ll notice that “Simply Postage” is the best solution because

  1. you aren’t charged a service fee each time you refill postage,
  2. you can refill anytime you want via the Internet,
  3. you pay only for the exact postage you download (plus a $15/mo. subscription fee), and
  4. you can even print postage while offline.

I’ve been using one of these machines now for about six months. I can tell you that it has been one of the handiest gadgets I’ve ever purchased. At the end of the month, when I need stamps for my regular monthly report, I print them 10 at a time until I have enough for the whole mailing. (The machine will “background print”.) At other times, if I just need one stamp, I just click for the one stamp I need. If the $15/month is worth it to you to escape regular trips to the lines at the post office, it’s a no-brainer! To get connected, just call toll-free to 877-499-3739. (Note — this month they have a special offer going on. If you tell them that Doug Lucas sent you (3700 Hopewell Rd., Louisville, KY 40299; DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg, 502-297-0006), you get $25 of free postage and my mission postage account will be credited with $20 of free postage too. Not a bad deal — again… if you don’t mind the $15/month user fee. If you need a meter, give it a try! The scales are built right in so you can weigh, print, and post — then forget about it!

THE BACKPAGE: MORE SILENT SPRING FEEDBACK

Doug's backpage I was impressed (in fact, amazed ) at all the feedback on the “Silent Spring” item. (It has continued to flow in, though more slowly.) It’s clear that many Brigada participants have a very strong view on the current status of mobilization. Some felt that the pendulum has now swung in the direction of non-Western evangelicals, therefore resulting in less “noise” and more action. Others felt that the momentum now favored congregations, whereas before it was focused on well-known individuals (such as special speakers and itinerant evangelists) or agencies. Whatever the case, one thing is clear: there’s a huge percentage of readers out there who feel that global evangelization is by no means finished. What’s more, there’s still a ton of interest in completing it . . . regardless of how long it takes. Bravo to that intent… and that determination!

(As to the YahooGroups polling feature, what a bust that was! We learned the hard way that many Brigada participants don’t ever log into the YahooGroups site and therefore, they have no web-id or password for online access. And that’s fine. Just don’t count on another YahooGroups poll showing up here anytime soon! :-) What a hassle it was for people to try to figure it out and use it. Our apologies to all those who were perplexed!)

THE BACKPAGE: WHAT’S IT LIKE TO FAIL?

glbooksc Those who are long-term readers of Brigada Today will perhaps remember one of my greatest failures (at least in my own eyes): trying for… and failing… my “C” soccer coaching license. (See “THE BACKPAGE: SO HOW DO YOU HANDLE FAILURE?” from the July 30, 1999 issue, and “THE BACKPAGE: TO COMPARE IS TO ERROR&” from the July 9th, 1999, issue.) Perhaps you’ll remember my having observed that it is generally agreed that the “C” license is a fairly difficult license to obtain. The only way to get one, in fact, is to attend a 9-day clinic overseen by United States Soccer Federation national coaching staff, then pass a fairly difficult battery of written essays, oral & written exams, and on-the-field practical coaching evaluations with real teams. In the summer of 1999, I wrote in Brigada Today about how hard I had worked to try to pass the course… but then shared openly about how frustrating it was to be categorized as a failure. In other words, after all the time, energy and money invested, I failed the course.
--------------------------------------

HOW TO HANDLE FAILURE

But in my reflection in Brigada Today, I also shared some ideas about how to handle failure. I suggested that we should first make sure that we really failed (an exchange of letters showed that I had indeed not succeeded), then, if the facts are undeniable, try to arrange for a 2nd chance, then try to prepare more effectively and, most of all, never, never quit.

soccer ball Well, last month I tried again.

I figured… hey… now I’ve been playing the game for 4 years in earnest, instead of just 2. And after all, those guys at that first clinic did seem kind of unfair. :-)

--------------------------------------

“C” CLINIC, TAKE TWO

And so it was that I arrived in Nashville, TN, last month to invest yet another 9 days to try to upgrade my coaching license to a “C” level. Don’t ask me why I was doing it. I mean… it’s not like I’ll get a raise from the mission organization I lead. And since most of the coaches there were leading teams at high school or college level already, it wasn’t like it would have even been necessary, even if I coached for a living.

Still, I was haunted by having failed at my goal. And to me, that was reason enough.

Well this time, the instructors seemed much friendlier… but just as “tough.” They let us know in advance that not everyone would pass. Gulp. gulp Here we went again. But this time, I seemed somehow calmer… somehow a bit more self-assured… and maybe even, just a bit more prepared.

--------------------------------------

THE “BIG GAME”

On the next-to-last day, however, when they chose two teams of 9 players each from among the 25 candidates (to take part in a “big game” that would, in effect, summarize everything we had been studying), I didn’t make the top 18. I was, obviously, disappointed, if not crushed. I wanted so much to play in that “big game.” Somehow I felt that if I could somehow do something… even something simple, it would show the instructors my passion and love for the game. With about 10 minutes left in the first half, I suddenly got my chance when one of the coaches (of Mexican descent) seemed too injured to go on. I was the first sub picked from the sideline. At least I wasn’t the last man chosen.
--------------------------------------

RESTING IN THE ASSURING POWER OF GOD

That morning, I had knelt before God to ask, “Lord, it’s just a soccer game… but please… could you somehow help me do something right… something simple maybe… but something miraculous?” A few minutes later, I got my chance. We were down 1-0, when I saw a defender throwing the ball into the keeper. I knew the keeper wouldn’t be allowed to catch the ball (by new rules set in motion just 4 years ago). I rushed the keeper, arriving about the same time the ball arrived. He had to play the ball just as if he were another field player. At the very last moment, I somehow toe-poked the ball through his feet right into the path of one of my teammates. I had set up the tying goal. Everyone cheered. The Scottish forward who had tapped home the goal pointed directly to me as he ran back upfield and said, “That’s your goal, Douglas!” I was elated, to say the least.
--------------------------------------

“HELP ME DO JUST ONE THING WELL”

Still, we were in only tied. But near the end of the second half, while running toward the opposing team’s goal, the ball basically dropped at my feet — not more than 6 yards from the goal itself! It was one of those rare moments in soccer where one’s life flashes before his eyes. :-) I knew that if I missed that goal, I would never forgive myself… nor would my teammates! The prayer flashed into my eyes. “Lord, please help me do something simple… something right… but something miraculous.” With one quick swing, the ball was in the net, past a gifted 25-year-old keeper that until last year played professionally in the English First Division. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had just scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the “big game”. God had answered my prayers. We won, 2-1. The toughest instructor walked me off the field saying, “Isn’t it something… the leading scorer wasn’t even supposed to be on the roster.” :-)
--------------------------------------

A BURDEN LIFTED

One of my practical field sessions didn’t seem to go as well. The evaluator seemed to write forever. I thought for sure he had failed me. So I honestly didn’t know for sure until this past week, when the packet arrived from the USSF in Chicago. But when I saw the results, I knew that it could only be due to God’s deliverance: I had passed the test. I had reached my quest. Finally, after a long wait (=too long!), I finally had received my “C” coaching license.

In July, 1999, I had suggested “Never, never quit.” Now more than ever before I knew the importance of that advice. And thanks be to God’s determination working in me, victory was mine. I’ve already talked to at least one other coach who attended my clinic. He coaches a Christian High School soccer team in our area. And he didn’t pass. But for some reason, due to God’s nature, I did pass. I’m not a superior player, I don’t have outlandish skills, but … I guess… I didn’t give up.

--------------------------------------

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER QUIT

Am I glad I stuck with it? Duh! Of course I am! It was one of those pieces of “unfinished business” in my life. Now, my shoulders seem so much lighter.

But in the end, I feel that my shoulders had very little to do with it. God is the true winner here… and I’m happy to give Him all the glory! Maybe more than anything else right now, that’s the most important part of this training! In the end, God was mighty and victorious in spite of the odds!!! :-)

QUESTION OF ‘SILENT SPRING’ ELICITS WIDE-RANGING RESPONSE

Brigada autoresponder Just as the seasons change from winter & spring to summer & fall, so flowed the wide-ranging responses to the recent Backpage editorial, “SILENT SPRING: WHERE HAS ALL THE HOOPLA GONE?” You’ll recall that in my original editorial, I observed that there seemed to be a kind of “lull” going on out there — at least in some circles — when it comes to large-scale missions mobilization. By and large, it seemed that many agreed. What was notable was the rationale behind the silence. (There were a ton of responses. To read a compilation, send a blank email message to: silent-springatbrigadadotorg  (silent-springatbrigadadotorg)   and a copy of the 38K compilation will be automatically sent to your email inbox immediately.

In her 1962 book, Silent Spring, Rachel Carson effectively raised the national consciousness on all things regarding pesticides, ultimately forcing the government to ban DDT and spurring revolutionary changes in the laws affecting our air, land, and water. In addition, Carson’s book was instrumental in launching the “environmental movement.” According to many observers, it is one of the landmark books of the twentieth century.

Unfortunately, the little item in Brigada Today won’t end up making such a big impact. :-) That’s a shame. First of all, it’s a shame because instead of dying birds, we’ve got eternally lost civilizations. Second, it’s a pity because it seemed we had such momentum going (95-99)! And third, it’s a shame because Rachel Carson became such a famous hero. By contrast, whoever heard of Doug Lucas? :-)

--------------------------------------

THEORY 1: MAYBE THERE’S NOISE, BUT WE CAN’T HEAR IT

In this camp were the “it’s-becoming-international” crowd. These folks theorize that the reason it seems so “quiet” is because the mobilization is no longer USA-based — or perhaps because of security issues. Mark (Cleveland, OH) pointed to websites like http://www.jesusfilm.org as proof that world evangelism is actually happening! Another friend in Eastern Europe wrote, “…I can’t tell you how exciting things are here! Not only that thousands are turning to Christ (though they are), but also seeing people from former communist countries dedicating themselves to serving cross-culturally. There’s a big pool of potential missionaries right here in Europe. How neat to see God’s hand at work!” A long-time friend (and former employee of AD2000!) wrote, “…Maybe things are silent because many people went to work among Unreached People Groups and aren’t so interested in loud mobilization efforts. That’s me. Maybe they are working in restricted access countries and don’t want to make loud noises less the authorities notice. …”

I’ll admit that I see some anecdotal evidence of this, now and then, but I’ll hasten to add that, in my travels so far, it seems this non-Western-based mission effort is, at best, “uneven,” in that there are still vast uncharted territories where no one is venturing to set up shop. And dare I say that it seems to mostly be happening in partnership with Western projects rather than totally in isolation of them. Do you agree? If this is the case, the implications are far-reaching. For… (and I know it’ll sound colonial and patronizing, so I’ll only mention the possibility) if we back off, then could it be that we’ll lose whatever ground we’ve gained in helping mission-receiving churches to become mission-senders?

The other side of this theory comes from the “now-it’s-a-grass-roots-affair” believers. These folks argued that the current situation is actually healthier, because instead of having to follow a vocal, motivational leader (like… maybe… Luis Bush???), churches and agencies (Western and non-Western) have caught the vision and they’re functioning in and near unreached peoples with high security — so no wonder I wouldn’t be hearing about it. Okay. Maybe. But in my limited experience, we hear feedback on the field side quite easily, even if we’re not hearing much on the sender-side of things. And on the field side, I must say, I don’t think I’m seeing throngs of new career-oriented cross-cultural witnesses. Lots of short-termers, maybe… in fact hordes of short-termers, in some cases. But, in some areas, I have to wonder who will become the five-year-folks — or better yet — the fifteen year folks — that we so desperately need.

--------------------------------------

THEORY 2: MAYBE THE MAGIC MOMENT HAS PASSED

These folks mostly sounded rather like realists. They basically “called a spade a spade.” Having heard lots of “noise” in the latter decade, they’re now wondering what’s become of it all. To these folks — and there were several — the huge groundswell of new full-time workers never really materialized. In its place are the short-term visitors who never really fully integrate. So long-term church-planting and leadership training, at least among the least reached, will suffer. “Jeff” wrote, “Three college grads who caught my missions obsession in 1995-2000 are now raising support and going [to work among unreached peoples]. But I notice that I am not mobilizing new folks as quickly. I have noticed an increased concern and sense of fear that missions is intolerant and destroys native cultures (typical mantra).” Rats. And lest we pat ourselves on the back too much about short-terms, another wrote, “We have had a summer intern program since 1989. For only the second summer, we will not have any this summer.” Yikes. Has the “magic moment” passed?

--------------------------------------

THEORY 3: MAYBE THE BEST IS YET TO COME

There were at least a couple of starry-eyed optimists who felt (at least said) that we now stand on the brink of what could turn out to be the greatest decade of missions of all time. These observers point to the perspectives classes (with enrollment at new highs, I might add), the tons of short-termers (already mentioned), international participation (mentioned above), and patient seed-sowing among mission-sending churches. Bit-by-bit, they build a strong case for believing in the tomorrow of world missions. As an example to this group, Dennis (Portland, OR USA) writes, “Perhaps we’ve been motivated enough for a period of time and need to apply some of the theory for a while and then move to the next level where we will need more education/motivation/whatever. I think that we know all we need to know to do what God wants us to do at this time for our particular church anyway. I don’t know how much impact our congregation will have on fulfilling the Great Commission but we seem to be starting to understand that we do have a part.” And Tom wrote from Houston, TX, “I wonder if we are in a sort of “pregnant pause” right now. Perhaps God is on the verge of initiating something new that will demonstrate His power and grace to a waiting world. He did say that “the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” Oh, that it would happen in our cities, in our nation and in the nations of the world. Perhaps this is just a time for some of us to catch our breath before the next big wave.” One very encouraging Brigada participant described the ongoing (rather amazing) mobilization in his congregation, then closed by adding this… “Here’s to a veritable flood of emails like this one, that will encourage your heart, and help you to see that we are ringed about with mighty warriors of God who are standing all around us, and joining with us in the battle that not only rages on, but has already been won. This is not a silent spring at all! All around me I hear the roar of battle, and the praises of newly-born children of God!”

NEW IDEAS FOR BIBLE TRANSLATORS

Bible Here’s a resource (Thanks Keith!) which may help Bible translators. It’s The Word: The Dictionary That Reveals The Hebrew Source Of English, by Isaac E. Mozeson, 2000. According to the author, Hebrew may be the source and key for all languages. Those outside of American need to put .us on the web addresses and email, after .com. http://www.hebrewworld.com/theword.html http://www.amazon.com for reviews http://www.swrc.com for past audio broadcast and book; http://www.cftinet.com/~mordecai for author’s web site, and email, mozesonatyahoodotcom  (mozesonatyahoodotcom)  .

TRANSPLANTED AND CONTEXTUALIZED CHURCHES

The article “Transplanted and Contextualized Churches” is the subject for this Monthly Missiological Reflection by Dr. Gailyn Van Rheenen. This is a timely topic because many missions churches, like banana plants in a cold climate, are unable to reproduce and need special care just to survive. You can read this article at http://www.missiology.org/MMR/mmr17.htm You can subscribe to future Missiological Reflections at http://www.missiology.org/MMR/subscribe.asp.

CORRECTION FROM LAST WEEK ON “MISSIONPREP”

lighting the way Well, I had heard that “dot com” companies were dropping like flies, but this is ridiculous. Earlier, “CROSS-CULTURAL TRAINING IN TORONTO THROUGH MISSIONPREP“, we neglected the “dot com” in the URL! The proper address should be: http://www.timcentre.com/missionprep/ Please pardon us for any inconvenience! (Thanks for catching it Chris!)

WANT TO IMPACT THE WORLD?

If you speak standard native English, you are already equipped with the skills needed to teach English all over the world. All you need in addition to those skills is a love for people of other cultures, a little appetite for adventure, a measure of flexibility, and a short, six-week course to train you in teaching methodology. Then you can effectively help others learn English or improve their English ability. Try out the Tesol School from June 15- July 27th, 2001, Henan Province, China. LEARN HOW TO RIDE THE TECHNOLOGY TIDE

Just as a surfer needs to learn to read the waves, we need to learn to read the ‘waves’ God sends our way. In the providence of God, we are in the midst of a huge technology wave that may come roaring down on top of us if we are not prepared. Bob L has prepared and article about “Globalization and Its Challenges for Christian Media” You can read it now on http://www.newWway.org or download it to read on your PalmOs platform! WHAT TO DO IF YOUR WALLET IS STOLEN

Traveling overseas seems to “up the odds” that you’ll be pick-pocketed. What do you do if your wallet is stolen? As everyone always advises, cancel your credit cards immediately. To do that, you’ll need all those toll free numbers and your card numbers. So write them down somewhere in advance — and not just in your wallet, silly. :-) File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where it was stolen, so you can prove to credit providers that you were diligent. If you’re from the USA, call (or have someone in the USA call) the three national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and SS# — to keep your credit clean. The numbers for the credit bureaus are: Equifax 800-525-6285; Experian (formerly TRW) 888-397-3742; Trans Union 800-680-7289. Again, if you’re from the USA, you might also call the Social Security Administration at 800-269-0271. (Thanks Alan!)

EXPATRIATE MINISTRY

Dan is doing a doctoral project on ministry to English-speaking expatriates living abroad. He is also the pastor of the International Christian Fellowship of Caracas. It seems that little has been written about this strategic ministry in the mega cities of the world. If you have any leads on books or articles on the subject, contact him at icfmissionatcantvdotnet  (icfmissionatcantvdotnet)  . He’ll put together a report to distribute as an autoresponder from Brigada.

THE BACKPAGE – SILENT SPRING: WHERE HAS ALL THE HOOPLA GONE?

books and pen Is it just my imagination, or is the silence beginning to roar? Maybe I’m not as “plugged in” as I need to be. (That’s hard to imagine with the quantity of emails I receive.) Maybe this is just a “lull” before more storms. Either way, it just doesn’t seem that there is as much mobilization for missions going on these days. Where are the big prayer pushes, … the big promotions, … the new books on unreached peoples. Yes… there’s an occasional CD, and… Operation World is coming… but for now,… if I’m not mistaken, we seem to be in a strange kind of muted silence, don’t we? Maybe that’s okay. Maybe 1995 – 2000 was actually too much glitz and glamour. Maybe the better part of valor is the discretion of pulling together new mission teams through patient and intentional step-by-step efforts. Time will tell. As for our own mission, I’ll have to admit — we have the biggest response ever to our summer internship program (80 summer interns compared to a previous “high” of 50 or so annually since 1984). So … I shouldn’t complain. Still… it’s silent enough to make me wonder… Was it just the new millennium… or did we just experience a ripple in the mobilization sine wave?

What’s happening where you sit? Send us your opinion. Write DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg  (DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg)   — with subject line: ” SILENT SPRING

NEW EMAIL JOURNALS… TCKS, TENTMAKERS, RESEARCHING

letter and ligntening bolt Have you seen the new ejournal for missionaries exploring avenues of receptivity and seeking to understand how to reach unreached people groups? (Thanks Tony!) It also contains issues relating to subcultures of mission organizations. To subscribe, send an email to rossdotwoodsatmountiesdotorgdotau  (rossdotwoodsatmountiesdotorgdotau)   with “subscribe RTU” on subject line. SERVING INTERCULURALLY is very similar but does not use “Christian” language. It is for tentmakers in countries that are closed to regular missiological bulletins for security reasons, but will also appeal to subscribers of RTU. Its discussion is appropriate for secular workers who face the same issues in offering human services in intercultural contexts. Subscribe to same address with “subscribe SI” on the subject line. The TCK BULLETIN discusses the educational, emotional, and social needs of third Culture Kids–kids who are brought up in cultures that are different from the home cultures of their parents. (This includes most missionary kids). Same subscribe address, with “subscribe TCK” as subject. This information is also carried at: http://www.paciu.edu/woods/ejournals.htm

NATIVE LANGUAGE TOOLS

tools Logos wants missionaries around the world to have native language tools. They also want the countries that are not so commercially viable to be able to get Bible software for their native languages. They are trying to release their next version of Bible Software in as many foreign languages as possible. They have an online collaborative effort set up where people who are fluent in multiple languages can help be a part of the process. http://www.logos.com/titus/language/ So far we have 33 languages in the works! Since most of these languages don’t have any commercial market at all, we need all the help we can get in order to release our Bible Software in as many languages as possible for no extra charge.

You can see the status of our translation work live on the web at: http://www.logos.com/titus/language/status.asp

People who know the languages can contribute translation help at: http://www.logos.com/titus/language/

GOT BUSINESS CARDS? GET ‘EM FREE

I saw this URL float by my inbox, but I didn’t give it much thought ’til my buddy actually used it to order a set of 250 free (free) business cards of his own! Well I’ve got a copy of his right here on my desk and . . . guess what! They look GREAT! Colorful, substantial, and . . . you actually lay them out over the web! They’re pretty snazzy. And you can’t beat the price (FREE! :-) ). Here’s the disclaimer. My buddy got one free dollar bill when I ordered my business cards from his referral . . . and . . . I guess Brigada would get one free dollar bill if a reader orders cards using the link below. The great part is… here’s a chance to order something free . . . and help Brigada. (The downside is… it’ll set you back $4.95 for the postage to send them to you. :-) ) So anyway… bottom line… if you need 250 business cards and you’ve got $5, you’re in luck . . . and Brigada is too! :-) :-)

http://service.bfast.com/bfast/click?bfmid=36985903&siteid=38374542&bfpage=homepage

Thanks in advance, if you’re one of the folks who needs cards! And hey… set up your free cards, get signed on so you can refer others, then those $1 referral bonuses will come your way as well! :-) And here’s the greatest part of all !!! International participants are more than welcome to order cards and participate in the referral program! Yahoooo! Yahoo Finally, life is good for international folks! :-) :-)

ARISE, SHINE MOROCCO!

praying hands Today only about one in fifty thousand Moroccans is a believer and in fellowship. Yet after more than a century of missionary endeavor, many believe the time is ripe for breakthrough in Morocco. Expat workers and national believers in Morocco have announced plans for an international Year of Prayer for Morocco and its peoples (YOP4M) in 2002. A video resource, a “52 Weeks of Prayer” booklet, and other materials are being produced for distribution. Prayer requests and praise reports from all regions of Morocco will be sent to participants around the world throughout 2002. Short-term teams will be coordinated. A global network must now be established. If you can help with this need or are interested in YOP4M please contact the International Facilitators at YOP4Mathotmaildotcom  (YOP4Mathotmaildotcom)  . You are invited to play an important part in this effort.

OPERATION WORLD 2001 BULK PURCHASE BY MAY 10TH!

book If you’d like to partner with the US Center on Operation World bulk purchases, you’d better act fast. The publishing company has given them a May 11th deadline. Operation World is coming out in the fall, and you can get in on bulk pre-publication pricing. The U.S. Center for World Mission is again offering Operation World at cost (or as close as they can get!) which should be $4.95 or less including shipping to you (sorry, U.S. addresses only). Last time we all got together and purchased 100,000 copies before the presses started rolling. If you are interested in 100 or more copies of Operation World 2001 for (about) $4.95 delivered to U.S. addresses, email to ow2001atuscwmdotorg  (ow2001atuscwmdotorg)   with your contact information (name, address, phone) and a quantity. You can also call 626-398-2328. They cannot go for fewer copies, so it would be a waste of Internet bandwidth to ask. :-) And just in case you were wondering, the book is not out yet, but should be sometime in September.

NEW BOOK ON MOBILIZING INTERCESSORS

book The U.S. Prayer Center’s Eddie Smith has just released a new book,”Intercessors: How to Understand and Unleash Them for God’s Glory.” C. Peter Wagner writes: “This is a one-of-a-kind book! Eddie Smith has helped me to understand intercessors and their ministry in a whole new way. This electrifying book will send positive shockwaves throughout the whole Body of Christ!” For more, send a “blank” email message to intercessorsatusprayercenterdotorg  (intercessorsatusprayercenterdotorg)  .

WHAT TO DO WITH JOB OFFERS/REQUESTS

Brigada Logo We sometimes receive notices for job openings, many of which are in 10/40 window nations. In general, it’s difficult to publish all those, since this list is typically reserved for news that would hopefully impact larger numbers of users rather than one user at a time. For example, here’s a school for the children of Christian workers located in Ankara Turkey. By this fall, they need at least 3 more elementary teachers and at least 2 more junior high teachers (state certification required; experience preferred). They even provide enough stipend to cover housing. (Teachers need to raise the remainder of their support. For more info, write Rhonda kwiestatattglobaldotnet  (kwiestatattglobaldotnet)  .) But unfortunately, we just can’t make this newsletter into a “job line.” There are nearly 10,000 subscribers… and this notice would eventually impact just 5 of them. However, we have launched a service that can help in this and many other cases. It’s called “Brigada-Opportunities.” It’s like having a free placement service combined with a free “headhunter” service (the friendly kind) all in one! If you’re searching for the right opportunity, just send a note to brigada-opportunities-subscribeategroupsdotcom  (brigada-opportunities-subscribeategroupsdotcom)  . And if you’ve got an opportunity, just email the note to brigada-opportunitiesategroupsdotcom  (brigada-opportunitiesategroupsdotcom)  . (Those with opportunities don’t actually have to join — their email will float into the conference even though they’re not subscribed! That way, they get to place their notice and those who are searching for the opportunity get to read the mail! When the volunteer hits reply, the reply goes straight to the person who sent the message (not to the whole conference). So… those with job options — please try Brigada-Opportunities! And if you’re searching, please subscribe there.

FOR THOSE OVERSEAS IN BUSINESS/SECULAR WORK…

What can be done for Jesus Christ while one is furthering national or business interests overseas? This month’s Operation Reveille Shofar feature article describes how to multiply ministry opportunities with low intensities of engagement. There’s also an area study of the Balkan Peninsula as well as news and testimonies about what God is doing overseas and how you can be involved. You may read the on-line version of the Operation Reveille Shofar at http://www.oprev.org/Shofar.htm or request a hard copy from operationreveilleataltavistadotnet  (operationreveilleataltavistadotnet)  .

RESEARCH ON REACHING POST-COMMUNIST YOUTH

If you are working with youth in Eastern Europe or Russia, you might benefit from reading the results of some research done among Russian young people, regarding their religious attitudes prior to hearing the gospel, their experience of “being evangelized” by Westerners, their own descriptions of their conversions, and their evaluations of Western evangelistic methods. Many of their comments are applicable to Westerners doing evangelism anywhere. You can freely download and use the papers, which are found on http://www.westernseminary.edu/mrg/dmiss/harris/ Or you could contact Mark at markatcmcdotryazandotru  (markatcmcdotryazandotru)  .

THE “USE” MINISTRY

Unlimited Strategy Evangelism, in existence since 1977, has as its main focus, at this time, the assisting of Pastors and Church Leaders in areas of the world where they have not had the opportunity for formal training. This is accomplished through one or two week long seminars consisting of Bible study, equipping, workshops, problem solving, and Q & A sessions. USE has ministered through out the USA and into Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Singapore, Malaysia, and New Zealand. Currently, ministries are scheduled for Mexico (June) and Kenya (Sept). Check out http://www.members.aol.com/aranyas/use-tac.htm The Director, Charles Aranyas may be contacted at Aranyasataoldotcom  (Aranyasataoldotcom)  .

MINORITIES OF CHINA HANDBOOK

book Paul Hattaway has recently completed what will certainly be the definitive introduction to China’s 400+ minorities, Operation China: Introducing all the Peoples of China. As you can infer from the title, this book is a prayer guide (Patrick Johnstone wrote the Foreword and will use much info from this book in the new edition of Operation World), introducing 1-2 minority groups per day to be prayed for. Hattaway, based on more than 10 years of research, packs this book with info on each minority: population, alternate names, location, religion, languages, status of evangelization, customs, and history. This book is a must for anyone desiring all the “nations” of China to know the Savior. (Thanks to the volunteer reviewer of this new book for Brigada Today — a strategic leadership trainer working in Mainland China since 1989, who wishes to remain anonymous.) (To buy your copy, contact infoatpiquantdotnet  (infoatpiquantdotnet)   or order from IVP, Norton Street, Nottingham NG7 3HR, UK – tel.+44 (0)1159 781054; retail price £320.00 / £35.00 – Piquant PalPacks: buy two copies and get the second one half-price!

JUNE CONCERTS OF PRAYER FOR TURKEY

praying hands International Turkey Network would like to invite you and your church to participate in an “International Concert of Prayer for Turkey.” Its members are asking churches and individuals around the world to set aside some time during the weekend of June 1st – 3rd for a time of prayer focused on the nation of Turkey. We will be posting some suggested items for intercession and general formats that you might want to use. We will suggest a two-hour concert of prayer, but will also offer ideas for formatting a one-hour meeting and a 15-minute section of a worship service. If you have any questions, you can call Linda Pallone at 480-464-3995 or send her an email at GoYeN2ataoldotcom  (GoYeN2ataoldotcom)  . If you schedule a time of prayer let us know how approximately how many will be participating. We want the believers and workers in Turkey to be encouraged by knowing how many will be praying on their behalf. When you respond, we will send you further information.

WebWatch If you’re a regular participant in a YahooGroup (formerly eGroups) then maybe you’ve caught wind of the rumor that the service’s management recently decided to offer pornographic materials in a larger, more visible “company-sponsored” way. (To see the original release, have a look at: http://foxnews.com/story/0,2933,5537,00.html ) However, after receiving numerous complaints from customers after revelations that the company had already been peddling x-rated materials anyway, Yahoo announced about a week later that it will no longer be selling pornographic videos period. “We consistently strive to act responsibly and constantly evaluate our policies based on what our users tell us,” said Yahoo president and chief operating officer Jeff Mallet. He added that the company will no longer sell banner ads to the pornography industry. (Source: CNSNews.com — thanks for the tip, Kirk!) Want an alternative to the whole situation? Try out StrategicNetwork.org’s new email conferencing software at: www.strategicnetwork.org It’s free . . . and becoming more powerful all the time. And what’s more, it’s run by Christians for global Christian purposes. So you know the management… (or at least we here at Brigada Today do!). Will Brigada Today switch over? Well… it’s always a possibility… but for now, we’re thrilled that YahooGroups took a stand. So… for the time being, we intend to ride the wave of good will following a decision for the good!

“WHOA!” – THIS IS A KEEPER – “PEOPLESFILE CD-ROM”

CD romGlobal Mapping (GMI) has done it again, with this great new resource for ministry to unreached peoples. They’ve integrated the latest and best information from the leading global missions databases, along with maps of thousands of people groups, to produce this “factbook and atlas of the world’s peoples and languages from a mission perspective.” As soon as I opened a copy of “Peoplesfile”, the first thing I did was search for information on a particular unreached people group our mission is currently trying to research. Lo and behold, they not only had it listed but also plotted! Here was a beautiful full color map with a polygon showing exactly where the [somewhat obscure] people group lived! We had searched tons of sites on the Internet and weeded through page after page in libraries… but nothing could have been so quick and easy as this beautiful little CD. If I were to have had this information in 1984, I could have saved weeks. Granted, now it’s 2001 — but this CD will still save me hours. I’ll be honest — if your work includes any research or mobilization for unreached people groups, it would seem this program should be on your “top ten must-have list.” It should be shipping by mid-April, and is priced at under $40, with bulk quantity discounts available. Read all about it at http://www.gmi.org/products/peoplesfile.htm or contact GMI infoatgmidotorg  (infoatgmidotorg)   or by telephone: 719-531-3599.

WHERE DOES YOUR MK GET FUNDING FOR SCHOOLS?

John sjhfrydatbigfootdotcom  (sjhfrydatbigfootdotcom)   is trying to find all scholarships, resources and/or funds available for MKs. Since not all missionary families are able to live close to appropriate schools, it would seem that options for schooling are often very limited … and prohibitively expensive (even for elementary school students). Any suggestions, information or ideas are welcome. John will gather all this information and make it available to everybody interested.

BRIDGES OF UNDERSTANDING

movie camera The new Video Cross-Cultural Training series, “Bridges of Understanding”, is now available through Mission Training International. It is composed of eight video sessions conducted by experts in cross-cultural training and was produced with the format of being video-driven without the need of an experienced facilitator. Though not designed to give one a complete understanding of cross-cultural skills, it should at least serve as an introduction or bridge into another culture. To order call 800-896-3710 in the USA or via Net2Phone or 719-594-0687 from anywhere. Otherwise, write Minternataoldotcom  (Minternataoldotcom)   or look on the web at: http://www.mti.org.

WHERE DOES ONE FIND INFO. ON CONFERENCE CENTER OPTIONS?

That’s what Ian idevilliersatvivadotorg  (idevilliersatvivadotorg)   would like to know. For example, he needs a spot for 150 or so participants from South and South-East Asia in 2002 for a conference focusing on ‘children at risk’. So where does he get info. on affordable hotel sites with lots of break-out rooms in a country with visa availability for other Asian nationalities and an international airport? If you know of directories or web sites or whatever, drop Ian a line and he’ll assemble a report for everyone to grab here on Brigada.

STOPPED IN FOR WEB-PRAYER

Finally, maybe there’s a good reason for this “instant messaging” stuff! :-) Last Thursday night I stopped by the chat room over at: http://www.strategicnetwork.org for a “live” prayer session on Nepal. It was indeed encouraging to “hear” so many people lifting up needs in this one nation… and the same thing has happened recently for Afghanistan, India, Kazakhstan, and Indonesia. I’ll admit… there was something stimulating about knowing all these folks were praying from somewhere in the world… and they do it every Thursday night. I think this concept is about to explode sky-high. And … while you’re visiting their chat room, check out the growth in groups at Strategic Networks. They’ve been busy!

WHO WANTS TO BE A MISSIONARY?

Ever fancied a go at “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” or the opportunity to prove you’re not “The Weakest Link?” OSCAR, the web-based UK Information Service for World Mission, has launched it’s very own “Who Wants to Be a Missionary?” quiz online. Designed to test your knowledge as a world Christian and potential missionary, the quiz comprises of 15 multiple choice questions on various topics like geography, religion and the history of mission. Anyone achieving a score of 10 or more will be entered in the bi- monthly “High Scorers” prize draw. Confident? Why not give it a try and see how globally-minded you really are? Go to http://www.oscar.org.uk and click on the “Who Wants to Be a Missionary?” link or, if you only have email access, send an email to infoatoscardotorgdotuk  (infoatoscardotorgdotuk)   with “GET QUIZ” in the subject line.

THE BACK PAGE: SIX YEARS OF BRIGADA

books and pen That’s right… this issue marks the sixth year anniversary of Brigada Today. Though there were some initial “email conversations” among a handful of individuals as early as January 25th, 1995, we actually “went public” on March 21, 1995. It’s a simple story, really. In November 1994, I was asked to serve as the president of a missions mobilization event that was to take place a couple of years later in Lexington, Kentucky. To prepare for the event, my colleagues and I began to try to find information about unreached peoples. We were aghast that it was still so hard to find good information. To make matters worse, we found it nearly impossible to effectively create or nurture networks among those trying to reach common nations of people. I remembered that a tech from a group called “CrossConnect”, based in Colorado Springs, had helped me send a binary file over the Internet to one of our mission staff in Ukraine. His email address had a funny “xc.org” domain. :-) Boy was I in for a ride. :-) For whatever it was worth, when we began to wonder whether or not the Internet could offer a set of tools for collaboration, I dug out that tech’s name and gave him a call. I remember that day as if it were yesterday. The Internet was something like the “Wild wild West!” And the web was so new, few of us guessed its potential. Over the next few months, that tech — Jonathan Marsden — became one of my closest friends, even though we had never even personally met! He pretty much single-handedly gave us the nuts and bolts and the technical vision for launching a family of interconnected networks via the Internet. When there were no tools for interacting, he would write them. When we had a need for doing something new, he would create. It was truly a time I’ll never forget. Our subscriber base, which started at 2 — Jonathan and I — soon grew to 50 and then, following GCOWE ’95 in Seoul, to 100 and . . . finally thousands. Some of you… many of you… have been with us ever since. There have been Brigada boosters — those who helped us grow the idea. I think of encouragement from people like Luis Bush who gave us a real forum with AD2000’s GCOWE conference. Greg Fritz, of Caleb Project, personally flew at his own expense to several of the initial “launches” for Brigada and the related “PACE Project” meetings. We have received tons of moral support from friends like Eric Derry and Chris Bushnell and many others who actually read this stuff. Amazing. :-) And the mission for which I work (the one which actually pays me! :-)), Team Expansion, has given me lots of latitude to use free time to follow this star. Many other people have helped make the dream a reality down through the years. Revis Ann Massey, an early “tech support” volunteer, answered tons of help questions in a labor of love. Later… and still through the present, Don and Judy Pratt have stood strong in her legacy of offering real live human answers when needed — helpatbrigadadotorg  (helpatbrigadadotorg)  .

Many have asked… where’d you get the funny name? :-) Brigada, pronounced “bree-GAH-dah” (rhymes with armada), is the rough equivalent of a “brigade” — in Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Albanian and even Filipino (who knows what other languages)! The idea is to stand side by side to pass buckets of hope for those most in need of Christ’s eternal message — like the old-fashioned bucket-brigades for putting out fires or like my Crimean Tatar friends in Ukraine when they’re passing gravel to build a new house together, helping one another. We needed a name for the service and… it just seemed like something unique and appropriate.

Well, back to the story, as time passed, there were the inevitable changes. CrossConnect was a brilliant idea but no one knew for sure how to pay for it. What’s more, the “free-wheeling” (pun intended) style of the Internet just made it that much harder for CrossConnect leaders like Pete Holzmann to make ends meet — seemingly everyone wanted a free ride. So in the end, the entire department was sold off to MAF (the airplane people) in Redlands, California. By this time, Brigada had spawned literally dozens of “sub-groups”. There were tons of people-specific conferences, along with role-specialized groups. I suppose they were the true precursors to the “YahooGroups” of today. Though there was no real “web interface”, no one really cared. We didn’t have time to use the web anyway… and few of us had fast connectivity anyway. The web seemed, well, overkill for what we needed — at first. For those who wanted to use it as an archive of past issues, God raised up Bob Mayhew — an amazing volunteer staff-person who is still churning with us today. He’s the single-handed reason that you can go to www.brigada.org and look at all six years of back- issues… and even search them instantly.

The high-tech leaders and the financial numbers-crunchers at MAF’s headquarters were truly caring people. I remember, for example, one week that they flew me out to Redlands to speak in chapel there for the MAF staff. They just wanted to build the relationship all the more. I got to meet with Jonathan and all the others. It was a great celebration… 10,000 subscribers… dozens of functioning sub-groups. We seemed to be flying high. But soon the question was rearing its ugly head again … how do we pay for this technical hardware-heavy, software-laden, connectivity-based cooperating!? MAF finally had to make a tough decision — to start charging either by the byte, or by the message, or by the group, or something. And when they switched over to a fancy new software (remember Lyris?) that was intended to provide new bells and whistles for sub-conference operators, for some reason, many were confused and seemingly left in the cold. As I look back, I don’t think the subconferences every recovered from that shock.

Meanwhile, the web was hot with advertisement-based features at spots like eGroups.com. The very week MAF determined that it had to switch to a fee-based approach, for better or worse, we moved Brigada to eGroups, where we could operate for free. Many sub-group subscribers moved with us. Many found other homes at spots like topica.com. And some probably just disbanded. In the end, with AD2000 hoopla seemingly cooling down and the reality of day-by-day operations setting in, some of the sub- group euphoria just didn’t make the transition. “Brigada” largely settled down to a weekly issue of Brigada Today. [yawn] yawning face [just kidding] :-)

But since those days, StrategicNetwork.org started up… (see item #11 above) and don’t forget www.peopleteams.org (check it out if you haven’t been there lately). These networks filled a real need… and probably did it all the more efficiently using their web interfaces. And since they were run by professionals who were doing it for a living, the staff there had more time — than a Brigada approach, run totally by volunteers, who actually made their living as full-time missionary-types, doing all this Internet stuff on the side as a kind of overgrown hobby. And for those with web access, they probably resonate better than the tools we used to try to pull together in the old CrossConnect days, when a “friendly face” like John Hanna (Caleb Project) had to try to actually manually answer every inquiry personally at the “People Group Consultant” service (remember the “PGC” email on August 25th 1995? If so, you’re showing your “Brigada age”! :-) ).

So today, when people ask, “Where are all the subconferences I’ve heard about on Brigada?”, I just smile to myself and remember the “good ole’ days.” They were filled with high-flying, adrenalin-pumping, marathon all-nighters. They’ll always mean a lot to those who took part in them.

But as always, the real “proof of the pudding” for Brigada (or any other service trying to lift up the needs of the unreached… and the tools for reaching them) isn’t really based in the tool itself… but rather in the act of reaching them. And everywhere we go these days, we see churches and agencies working together to complete the task of world evangelization. As long as that’s happening with gusto, the Brigada dream will still be alive.

But, I must close. We’ve got another six years of Back page editorials to think up. :-) Thanks for being a part of Brigada. I truly hope it’s the best free service you’ve ever bought into. :-) As a final “hoorah” for our sixth-year birthday party, here are three lessons out of many that I’ve learned since those wintery fateful days in January of ’95:

  • RESOURCES — Many Brigada readers seem to like hearing about new resources… maps (remember those 100 Gateway Cities maps from August ’95?), videos, CDs, and even books. Maybe promoting these resources has become one of the key roles of Brigada.

  • RELATIONSHIPS — In the end, it’s not the maps or videos or even the hoopla. It’s the relationships we establish that will last… and those are Brigada-strong.

  • RESOLVE — Many have asked how we’ve managed to keep at it. Though nearly every issue of Brigada Today is “late” :-), we have for better or worse (you be the judge) always gutted it out. In six years time, through thick and thin, sometimes from Africa, Asia, South America, or wherever we happened to be in the world, … we’ve always managed to email you a message… six years times 52 weeks/year… yikes gulp… now there’s a scary thought. 25,733 paragraphs, 85,340 lines, 723,191 words, for a total of 5 megabytes of just verbiage (no pictures)… makes me tired just thinking about it. And speaking of tired, it’s 4:36am. Time to hit the sack.

Oh… did I mention… a lot of Brigada readers like … brevity. Oops. :-)
Yours always,
Doug

OPEN LETTER FROM OPERATION WORLD AUTHOR

Here’s your chance to help bring out a new edition of Operation World, one of the most effective and time-tested ways to mobilize and pray for global missions. This past week, we received this note from Patrick Johnstone, the author of OW:

“Greetings, and thanks for Brigada!

“Thought I would drop you a line about progress towards completion of OW.

“For prayer: Operation World nears completion, but in the final months before our deadline of 30 June 2001 we must squeeze in about 6 months of work! We value prayer. The huge printing press in the USA is booked for July and we cannot miss our long-fixed slot. Publication is due in early September and the book will be launched on Logos 2 in London Sept 8 and at the EFMA/IFMA jamboree in Florida a few days later. Pray that this may happen! It involves five of us working flat out – me often 14 hours a day.

“Progress to date. We have now completed the draft of the text for every country, and these have been distributed to thousands of respondents for checking. This edition will be the most checked of any hitherto – because of the gift of e-mail, but mistakes, unnecessary errors needlessly painful comments are all possible for we are human! Please pray for objectivity and incisiveness as well as speed!

“We are now writing up the Special Ministries and the Regional summaries. I have just completed Africa and am now tackling the Americas then comes massive, complex Asia.

“In this edition we are beginning the text on most countries with Answers to Prayer – God has done so much in our world over the past decade and we want to ensure He gets the glory for His power revealed in answer to our prayers! Regional totals emerging show that for Evangelicals the 1990s was probably the greatest harvest ever.
Yours in Jesus,
Patrick Johnstone

Here at Brigada, we hold Patrick in the highest respect, so when he takes time to personally write and ask for prayer, we listen! So we urgently covet your prayers on his behalf and on that of the entire OW staff! Please take a moment right now to remember his requests!

GREAT RESOURCE FOR MISSIONS MOBILIZATION MATERIALS

Here’s a great resource for missions mobilization materials if you happen to live in the USA or know someone who does: 8MORE-BOOKS (866-732-6657) or Fax 706-554-7444 or email orderatomlitdotomdotorg  (orderatomlitdotomdotorg)  . Ask for a catalogue. (Remember that we highly discourage using email for credit card orders.) Noting the obvious lack of a website, we wrote them and they were nice enough to respond, saying that one was in the works. In the meantime, http://www.omlit.om.org says two words “OM Literature” :-).

ENCOURAGEMENT / DISCERNMENT DEVOTIONALS

If you have any suggestions on devotionals or studies that would help missionaries recharge and refocus, Paul needs your help. In approximately three weeks, he is leaving on a ten-day journey to visit missionary friends who are in a time of transition and who seek the Lord’s clarity in their current location. Send suggestions to michalikattexasdotnet  (michalikattexasdotnet)  .

‘PARADOX’ IN MONTREAL

“Connected to culture, conformed to Christ” will be the theme of a two-month experimental missions internship in the Canadian city of Montreal this summer. Sponsored by the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board and North American Mission Board, “Paradox” is designed to deepen students’ devotion to Christ and develop a team for innovative evangelism in a postmodern, cross-cultural setting through arts, personal relationships and other formats.

Participants will be ministering in the largest city in Canada’s predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec, which several evangelical ministries have labeled as the least evangelized area of North America. SEMINAR ON THE WORLD CHRISTIAN ENCYCLOPEDIA

calendar The second edition of this 2-volume reference work is now hot off the press. The WCE2 gives detailed information on the status of Christianity and the status of evangelization in every country, religion, people group, language, city, and province in the world – as well as many other valuable resources. It is a goldmine of strategic information for world evangelization. It is also big, complicated, detailed, and sometimes technical. ACMC, Caleb Project, and CBInternational are co-sponsoring an interactive, half-day seminar on the WCE2, on 27 April in Littleton, Colorado. It will be led by Michael Jaffarian, an Associate Editor of the Encyclopedia. For more information, contact Lauri Dennis at LDennisatcprojectdotcom  (LDennisatcprojectdotcom)  . If you would like to see the seminar offered in your city (even outside the USA), contact Michael at michaeldawnaatearthlinkdotnet  (michaeldawnaatearthlinkdotnet)  .

GLOBAL ECONOMIC OUTREACH ADDS “E-MAIL ONLY” INTERFACE

letter and ligntening bolt Those with unreliable or expensive Internet service can now interface with GEO by e-mail. GEO recruits Christian craftsmen, hobbyists, artisans, and professionals to give practical information and assistance to missionaries. “Email only” clients can begin by sending an email to Indexatteamgeodotorg  (Indexatteamgeodotorg)  ; an automated response will give further information. Those preferring secure communications can send an email to Smalltalkatteamgeodotorg  (Smalltalkatteamgeodotorg)  ; this automated response contains no sensitive language or information. INFORMATION REQUESTED ON MINISTRY TO THE DEAF

The Wollongong (Australia) Deaf Church is interested in knowing where in the world there is established ministry to the Deaf, particularly in relation to their planned visit to a Russian Children’s Camp in July 2001. Thousands of Russian children go to the summer camps. This particular camp has about 200 deaf children, who have never ‘heard’ the Gospel. They want to be sure that the Deaf children reached at the camp can properly be followed up. Send replies about this region and others to Michael churchesmaatcyberelectricdotnetdotau  (churchesmaatcyberelectricdotnetdotau)   and they will be compiled into a single report for use by Brigada members. People who are able to share in prayer support for this venture should also contact Michael as above. Thanks Michael!

NO MORE WARNINGS ABOUT MADALYN MURRAY O’HAIR

Brigada readers are reporting having received several warnings recently about a supposed effort by atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair to have the word “God” banned from the airwaves by the FCC. This would supposedly result in the termination of the television program, Touched by an Angel. These and all future warnings are bogus. Ms. O’Hair has passed on to the hereafter. See the article in the Wall Street Journal’s obituary page: http://www.opinionjournal.com/wsj/?id=85000748. Apparently she was kidnapped, forced to withdraw money from the account of her organization, and then sadly murdered… Not a great ending. But the Wall Street Journal piece is well worth the read. Check it out! (Thanks Justin!)

CONFERENCE SUBSCRIPTIONS: THE “EASIEST INTERNET FUNCTION”

letter and ligntening bolt I remember early on in the life of Brigada Today, our early “tech support” helper, Jonathan Marsden, used to say that handling one’s subscription to an email conference should be the most basic, most fundamental interaction with the Internet. All the other items… FTPing a file, writing web pages, etc., were perhaps a challenge, but Jonathan could never figure out why it was so difficult for folks to learn to handle their conference addresses. Well here we are, six years later, and today I’m just as mystified as he was six years ago! Every week I get email from users saying, “I’ve changed email providers; please switch my Brigada Today to the following address…” Sometimes they say, “I’m so-and-so’s secretary and he’s no longer with our organization. Could you please cancel our subscription?” And every once and awhile, someone writes with volcano-like anger in their email, as if they’re about to turn me over to the email police! “If you don’t stop sending me these emails, I’m going to do such-and-such.” My answer is always (always) the same. “Hey… it’s automated. With all due respect, you (or someone from your org.) signed up for it; you maintain it.” Since we never subscribe others to this list, that means all of us signed up for it! :-) So please re-read the first few lines of this message, up there by the address header (beginning with the word, “Important!”).

Bottom line: Let’s learn this fundamental Internet protocol of handling our own subscriptions. Asking the compiler of a list of 10,000 subscribers to change an address manually is a bit like asking a representative from your electric utility to come over to your apartment to change a light bulb.

And probably, the odds of it happening are about the same. :-)

DIGITAL HOME OR DIGITAL DOG

lighting the way We continued to receive a flurry of emails, warning Brigada participants about “Digital Home” A.K.A. “Digital Dog” (who would name their business “digital dog“???). (The video camcorder source mentioned in last week’s Brigada Today.) Folks recommended http://www.crutchfield.com or basically anything else besides the “dog” site. Interestingly enough, we had been burned here by the “dog” site before, but didn’t realize the digital “home” site was actually the same company! So… buyers beware. caution

THE FIELDS IN JAPAN ARE WHITE FOR HARVEST!

At least two mission organizations are stepping up their efforts for Japan. One, Harvest Fields Ministries, has noted that the economy there is in recession and the people are experiencing job layoffs, early retirement and downsizing–things they haven’t seen in two generations. As a result, HFM is beginning a push to recruit 200 church planters to respond to that open door. If interested, write mikeathfministriesdotcom  (mikeathfministriesdotcom)   or visit the “How big is your vision?” page on their website at http://www.hfministries.com. You may also telephone Harvest Fields Ministries at 417-883-4134.

The other organization, Team Expansion, is shocked at the incredible size of Tokyo and the opportunities to impact 30 million people in one city! The Louisville-based ministry is putting together a 10-week program for those who’d like to check it out during the summer of 2002. All participants will work with a combination of seasoned missionaries and local Japanese hosts. For more information, visit them on the web at http://www.teamexpansion.org or write infoatTeamExpansiondotorg  (infoatTeamExpansiondotorg)  .

VIRTUAL PRAYER FOR THE UNREACHED

praying hands Every Thursday night at 10pm EST, strategicnetwork.org and livethecall.com have been combining chat rooms to hold a prayer meeting for the unreached. Next came Kazakhstan and this week it might be Indonesia. Check out the transcripts at http://www.livethecall.com/index.html?a=relationships&b=chat If you would like to participate in a prayer for a particular country or people group, contact them at livethecallatlivethecalldotcom  (livethecallatlivethecalldotcom)   or nsmatstrategicnetworkdotorg  (nsmatstrategicnetworkdotorg)   to let us know. THE BACKPAGE: 10/40 WINDOW UPDATE

books and pen The 10/40 Window is alive – but isn’t well. Luis Bush writes, in an article soon to appear in Mission Frontiers, “The 10/40 Window continues to represent the primary geographic challenge entering the twenty-first century. By 2025 there will be over 8.3 billion people in our world. Over a billion will need cross-cultural witness to understand the gospel, most of whom will live in the 10/40 Window. It is the geographical location in which the concentration of the main spiritual, ideological, social, urban, people group challenges are most prominent. There are an estimated 1.2 to 1.4 billion people who have never had the chance to hear the gospel and over 95% of these individuals reside in the Window area. It is where 85% of the world’s poorest and most deprived live. It is the residence of over 95% of the Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists in the world. Many of the world’s least reached peoples live in this area. From the ‘Joshua Project 2000 list of Unreached People’, there are still 249 of large groups which remain unclaimed, with no agencies reportedly planning to send workers to them; 542 of them currently have no church planting team on-site; and 1,107 are without a congregation of at least 100 believers.” Yikes. gulp With the needs still so stark, we dare not allow our global efforts to fade. We’ve got to avoid missiological “burn-out,” where fads and campaigns give way to complacency and apathy. Let’s retool, retrain, and rebuild our vigor… and let’s not give up or give in until every last inhabitant of the planet has a chance to say “yes” to Jesus! (Thanks to Rick and the folks at: http://www.missionfrontiers.org )

MAKING THE SWITCH TO YAHOOGROUPS

Brigada Logo It’s actually quite painless. Just get in the habit of placing the word “yahoo” wherever you would have typed “e” in egroups. There’s no hyphen. So to find the Brigada Today site on yahoogroups, go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/brigada-today There’s a custom facility to transfer your old “egroups” membership to “yahoogroups”. However, we’re guessing most Brigada Today participants probably never visited the website for egroups.com, and thus, probably never actually had an ID/password. So you can pretty much start from scratch at yahoogroups.com. The service won’t let you subscribe twice from the same email address. However, if you’re still receiving Brigada Today from a previous (and still working) email address, it is possible to receive two copies. The trick is — unsubscribe from the old service first. See the first few lines of this email for instructions.

HOW DO YOU USE CHRONOLIGICAL BIBLE STORYING IN AN URBAN SETTING?

Bible That’s what Rich untotheleastatcaracaspoordotnet  (untotheleastatcaracaspoordotnet)   would like to know. He’s looking for a chance to dialogue with others who have used or are currently using Chronological Bible Storying among low-income urban residents. His team of church planters is working in the barrios of Caracas, Venezuela, with a target group numbering more than 3 million (check out http://www.Caracaspoor.net). Because of issues of orality and literacy, the more conventional methods of evangelism have not worked well. Contact Rich with your experiences, things that worked and didn’t work, best ideas, sources, and links and he’ll make us a file that we’ll later release here in Brigada Today.

LOOKING FOR A DIGITAL CAMCORDER?

movie camera Try the Sony DCR-PC110, a brand new unit from Sony that combines a digital video camera (using the new standard, Mini-DV tapes) with a digital still camera — at just over 1 megapixel level. For web sites and most printing jobs, you’ll see little or no “jaggies”. (Higher end printing requires up to 3 or 4 megapixel stills.) The price? $1499 Though that might sound like a lot, this same technology used to cost double or triple that. To find that price, go to a site like http://www.thedigitalbuyer.com Their product ID for the Sony unit is “SNYDCRPC110”.

caution Here’s an important update!
What we didn’t know was that this is simply a DBA (“doing business as”) renaming of a company with really bad reviews… known better as “The Digital Dog”. A tech from the US Center wrote today to supply us with this web page URL: http://www.resellerratings.com/comview.cgi?TheDigitalBuyer That page has some pretty sorry descriptions of their customer service. Mike (from the US Center) recommended instead that we look at these vendors: http://www.profeel.com and http://www.bhphotovideo.com I know we’ve ordered from the BH Photo folks before. As Mike acknowledged, the price will be a bit higher, but at least you’ll get your product in a timely fashion!

Sorry for any inconvenience!

A NEW (OLD) SLANT ON PRAYER FOR THE NATIONS

The International House of Prayer is a 24-hour/day, 7-day/week, inter-denominational prayer ministry located in the Kansas City area. It’s a great new concept based on an old model–the Tabernacle of David–with singers and musicians leading corporate intercession and worship 24-hours a day. They have particular sessions to pray for the Kingdom to come to the nations, cities, and college campuses of the world. They even have prayer training and a passion to send pray-ers to the nations. Write for information at infoatihopkcdotcom  (infoatihopkcdotcom)  , or check out more at http://www.ihopkc.com/new/ihop247.html. (Thanks Mark!)

SEARCH BRIGADA ARCHIVES

Brigada Logo There are two ways to search past issues of Brigada Today. Without a doubt, the best way is to go to the Brigada web site: http://www.brigada.org Our amazingly consistent web-volunteer, Bob, has custom-designed a search engine there especially for Brigada Today. You can specify how many years back you want to search (all the way back to the beginning, if you like), as well as how exacting you want the search. What’s more, when you see the results, you’re looking at the item titles themselves, rather than the issue for that week. So when you click on an item that looks promising, Bob’s search engine takes you precisely to the item, even if it was originally at the very end of the issue in which it occurred. By the way, we’ve been running a couple of sister relationships along the way, and Bob’s listed helps for them as well — for Advance and the Web Evangelism Guide. Find it all by clicking on the “Search” line at the home page of Brigada.

So go ahead… give it a try. Click to: http://www.brigada.org/sbtas.html and search for “water filters”. You get 9 results, some of which go back as far as August ’98. If you drop the “s” and type in just “water filter”, the search engine finds an additional 5 items, 14 in all. Try it yourself with something you’d like to research. “TESL” finds a dozen items, “TESOL” finds 27. The term “Bush” is mentioned a whopping 75 times! :-) “Yahoo!” is there 7 times throughout the past few years. :-)

By the way, there is another way to search more recent issues. About the only time you’d want to use this alternative approach is when Bob hasn’t quite had a chance to post the most recent issue into the Brigada site. For example, you receive a particular issue of Brigada Today, then you delete it, then you wish you could get it back — about 5 minutes later. Odds are, Bob won’t be quite that fast (although he’s usually fairly quick! :-) ). In that case, go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/brigada-today/messages At that site, the particular edition is available within about 30 seconds of posting time. Yahoo Groups has Brigada Editions going back to August of 2000. So you should be covered!

APOLOGIES TO JERRY RANKIN

lighting the way Oops… contrary to what we reported earlier, Dr. Jerry Rankin is at the helm of the IMB, not Avery Willis (see Feb. 16th edition of Brigada Today, “FROM THE “I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S FREE” DEPT.“). Thanks to those who wrote with that correction. However — it was indeed Avery Willis who announced that the IMB was “opening up the store”, so to speak, at GCOWE ’95. Avery is, however, the Senior VP, not the actual point man.

SURVEY REVEALS BEST TRAITS FOR TENTMAKERS

Here’s a great little study reported by Tim Parker tparkeratteamexpansiondotorg  (tparkeratteamexpansiondotorg)  , the Tentmaking Coordinator for Team Expansion. According to Tim, Don Hamilton (of TMQ Research) recently completed a survey among some 800 people who are serving or have served overseas in a tentmaking capacity. The study revealed that the most effective tentmakers…

  • had led an evangelistic bible study before going overseas.
  • went overseas mainly to share the gospel.
  • believed God called them to be tentmakers.
  • had experience in actively sharing their faith at home.
  • had strong relationships with their local home church.
  • recruited others to be tentmakers.

For further information on the survey, or for a copy of the full report ($10), Tim said we could write directly to Don Hamilton, TMQ Research, 312 Melcanyon Road, Duarte, CA 91010, 626-359-4048. (No email given.) Tim cited the info. with permission from the Canadian Tentmaker Network/Southern Ontario Tentmaker Seminar Workbook). Thanks Tim!

MISSION ADVENTURE NOVELS?

WebWatch Here’s the latest in literature… a missions “ebook” adventure story. Check it out at: http://www.adventurebooksonline.com. In each AdventureBook novel, you will be exposed to new and informative insights about exotic cultures and places. The goal of these writings is to elevate the enjoyment level of readers to the point that you will learn things about important cultural and missiological truths without even realizing that they are being taught. (Note that we’re mentioning this site because of its cutting-edge approach to distributing missions information; we’re not necessarily endorsing the fact that the profit from the book goes to help a mission effort in the Philippines. As a general rule, we don’t publish fund-raising appeals. But we do highlight useful and innovative resources, practically all of which tend to result in someone making some small amount of money. Anyway… we thought this was a creative way to get the word out.)

THE BACK PAGE: MORE ON HOW GOOD TEAMS BECOME GREAT TEAMS

books and pen Michael Jaffarian recently wrote us with a thoughtful evaluation, after having read the “Back Page” editorial from Feb. 16th (…Good Teams…). I remember meeting Michael on a bus once in Seoul, Korea — of all places. I’ve never forgotten his eye for detail, still apparent in this piece of transparent and honest evaluation:

“My interest perked up at something you wrote in Brigada Today. (So what does Anson do? For one thing, he measures everything. His logic is… unless he follows it, no one will focus on improving it. )

“Exactly. In our mission, CBI, we realized that we were keeping excellent statistics on finances, pretty good statistics on personnel, but not as good field statistics. In other words, we could report to our churches how much they were sending to us, but not much about what fruit was coming from all that, in concrete, specific terms. Our old field statistics system, of annually getting a count of churches, baptisms, etc., had sort of fallen into disrepair. For one thing, so much of what happens on the field is done by nationals, not by our missionaries. But there are ways to overcome that. So one of my major projects this year is to renew and upgrade that whole system for our mission. What to count, and why, and how.

“I spent a lot of time in January meeting with and talking to field leaders from many of our fields. Each is sooooooooo different from the next. I developed a lot of good, fresh ideas from that. I also spent some time going over our Mission Statement, our Purpose Statement, our Strategic Priorities, and etc., and on all these things asked, are there ways we can monitor this stuff? For most of it, there are. For example, we say that evangelization is a big priority for us as a mission. So I am going to ask every missionary, every year, how many people did you share the gospel with last year? (There are some complexities, definitions to that question, but still, I think I can make it workable). … I believe that just the asking of that question is going to increase the amount of evangelization we as a mission do every year. Similar with many other categories, in the life and work of the missionary, and field-by-field.

“I suspect a lot of missions could do a better job with this business of field statistics – gathering them, analyzing them, reporting them, and strategizing on the basis of things learned and opportunities revealed. The things we want to be doing as a mission, let’s quantify them if possible, and then learn. The point is not to make anybody look good or to make anybody look bad. The point is to give glory to God and serve him well.”

Thanks for your frank and honest sharing, Michael!
