For example, one of the forces behind Pray4Tunisia recently sent a gift of $150, along with this note: “Thanks so much for helping us launch Pray4Tunisia. You helped connect us with the body of Christ. By God’s grace, nearly 20,000 intercessors are now pleading with God for the launching of a church multiplication movement in Tunisia! And this is only the first year!” The group has successfully used such sites as…

http://www.Facebook.com/Pray4Tunisia

and

http://www.Pray4Tunisia.com

God be praised. Imagine 20,000 people rallying together to pray daily about *anything*, let alone a meaningful missions venture! It’s a dream come true.

Thanks to Bellevue Baptist ($100) and Partners International ($150). Maybe the latter gift came from a specific worker who wanted to bless Brigada personally, and the gift came through Partners’ office. Regardless, we’re humbled, sobered, encouraged, and inspired to keep working. Bless you!!!

In addition to the above, we also received $20 from a Brigada fan out in the state of Illinois. When asked if she wanted to feature anything in particular, she responded, “Nope, just thanks for helping missionaries by getting the resource information out there!

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For example, there might be any number of …

*** Mothers and fathers who possibly raised them to care

*** Church leaders and teachers who prepared them

*** Financial supporters who make their work possible

*** Prayer supporters who undergird them

*** Agency leaders, trainers, and sustainers who help them

*** Friends and helpers who take care of logistical burdens for them

*** Correspondents (via email and/or Facebook) who keep them connected

*** Specialists who help make their work happen by providing special services

…and the list goes on. We sometimes lift the missionary or missionary family on a kind of pedestal. Most missionaries I know are rather uncomfortable with that status because, notwithstanding the sacrifice they make separating themselves from homeland, friends, and family, they are (and want to be considered as) people, just like everyone else in the Kingdom. The people who make their work possible — the virtual crowd of witnesses (taking a page from Hebrews 12) — are, in many ways, also inspiring to me because they work behind the scenes, without the limelight, without the pedestal, and often without every receiving any kind of recognition at all. The typify true Christian love — selfless, patient, determined, and focused. Praise be to God that when people hear the Good News, they hear it through the combined efforts of a great crowd of witnesses that extends across continents and truly exemplifies the concept of a Kingdom united.

He recently pointed me to this article by a prof at Carnegie Mellon.

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9218903/Profile_pics_on_social_media_sites_pose_privacy_risk_researcher_warns

(Note: The above link will ‘wrap’ in the emailed version of Brigada Today. If you have trouble reassembling it, just go to the online version and find this item, then click on the link above.)

The bottom line of this article, and the research behind it, is that facial recognition software, combined with internet search capabilities, is becoming sophisticated and fast enough to begin affecting the way we post our picture on such sites as Facebook and LinkedIn. How long will it be before unfriendly governments begin using these techniques for screening potential visitors to their borders? I’m not sure — 20 years? 10 years? next year? Either way, it has the potential of affecting all those who seek to remain low-key and “under the radar.”

How will *your* agency or church respond to this kind of technology? Should you, for example, ask potential workers to remove all pictures and tagging on Facebook? Should you ask that no online pictures be posted on any site whatsoever? The time we require to react to these and other, similar questions is time lost to respond in a proactive way. Please give your opinion (anonymously or under an assumed name if you desire) in the Comment box below. Thanks.

Seems to offer a lot of promise. (Thanks Bryon!)

I jest, but it’s almost that bad. For example, in February, the folks at Lifehacker voted Witopia as the #1 VPN service-provider, but around that same time, Barracuda spam prevention devices decided not to let any of Witopia’s connections enter a Barracuda-protected network. Bummer. My prediction is, unless Witopia can strike a deal with them, it’ll cost them a huge percentile of their customer base. (It did me, for example.) It’s enough to make a user switch — period. But wait — some might wonder, “What’s a VPN?” Basically, it’s a tool that lets you create an encrypted “tunnel” through which your internet content can flow… until it reaches the “exit point” for whatever VPN service you’re using. For example, I’ve recently switched to StrongVPN (which Lifehacker readers voted #3, by the way), and they have exit points in 15 countries. With many services, you get to choose your exit point. At least that way, you can get your internet traffic out of, say, a country that wants to “see” your data and into the “clear” — maybe the country where you live. In StrongVPN’s case, for example, they’re based in the USA. But you can choose VPN service-providers based in lots of other countries all over the world.

So which is your favorite and why? Just click “Comment” below and tell us about it! This is a rapidly-developing field; we’d better pay attention to it. Apparently, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was recently browsing — and hacked — at a public wi-fi hotspot. (This guy went to Harvard?) I guess it’s time we *all* get VPN’s. (And hats off to “K,” at our North African desk. :-) He’s the guy who brought this topic up to us this week.)

It’s called, Wedoist.com.

http://wedoist.com

There are free start-up options, so you can ‘try before you buy.’ But you can’t beat the subscription deal — For a mere $25/month for a key facilitator, your whole team can come together on an infinite number of projects, and each project can contain up to 5 gigs of files, viewable by everyone you’ve added in that project. So this is a file storage solution without limits, essentially. For example, you might create one project to serve as a kind of “intranet” for your team or community, then create another one for each team you’ve sent out. There’s a “status” page, where folks place updates (like status updates in Facebook). There’s another tab for Tasks, where you can assign tasks, “complete” them, and do discussions about them. And then there’s the “Files” tab with which you can store documents. Everything is “needle-in-a-haystack searchable, so you’ll never lose things again. And the document storage also has lightweight ‘versioning.’ There’s even a “chat” built-in for use with those who are registered. Use “labels” to tag ideas (also unlimited), and mark tasks with due-dates and label-based priorities. Each project is encrypted and separated from the other projects with a “wall” of separation, so you can invite as many guests into one project and they’ll never see the contents of the “project next door,” so to speak, so you can maintain security. Give it a try. Keep in mind — There’s no affiliate discount or kick-back being given here. This is just one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread.

Check out the Rover, which combines an LED flashlight with a radio that has AM, FM and weather bands. If the power runs low, pop out the hand crank (or have your 12-year-old do so for you :-) ) and start whirring. One minute later, you’ll be good to go for another 15 minutes or more. What’s more, you can use a USB charger in place of the 12-year-old (if you’re fresh out). What’s more, you can also *charge* anything that runs on a USB plug, including a cell phone. As one reviewer observed, if the electric stays out for more than a few hours, these days, you’re going to want to tell all your Facebook friends anyway. :-) The Rover will set you back about $50, but it might be the last flashlight you’ll ever have to buy, at least for power-loss-emergencies. :-)

They also announce several initiatives by different teams, including the availability of The Mentor Center for online ministries to use, and a remarkably new system for sharing evangelistic video clips on Facebook and other social networking options. You can also request a speaker on digital evangelism for mission conferences or consultations.
