The folks at Empowerment Advocates International are happy to offer a new and exciting seminar called ACTS (Applied Community Technology Seminar).

In this one month seminar you will learn the basics of the design and construction of Aquaculture or fishfarming, Water pumping systems, Papercrete and strawbale home construction, Wind and solar power, and more. These are all used as a platform to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to the poor and needy of the world. You’ll then travel to Honduras where you’ll apply your new found skills. I’ve always been interested in these kinds of seminars and look forward to attending one myself someday. One pastor said, “This training is like a Jack knife in the back pocket of a missionary to help the poor and needy of the world in word and indeed.” For more information, click to

A situation is assessed for whether relief, rehabilitation, or development is the best response to a situation. Efforts are characterized by an “asset based” approach rather than a “needs based” approach. Short term mission efforts are addressed and economic development strategies appropriate for North American and international contexts are presented, including microenterprise development.
 1. FINAL CALL (AUG. 17) FOR HELPING DOUG WITH FOLLOWERSHIP STUDY
2. FROM CALEB PROJECT: 10-WEEK STUDY ON OUTREACH, FOR SMALL GROUPS
3. PRODUCING FUELS FROM AGRICULTURAL WASTES
4. SEND GLOBAL INTERNATIONAL AIRTIME
5. BARREL AQUAPONICS: CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION
6. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE WORD AT SBS
7. PRE-ISLAMIC ARABIA
8. STARTING OUT IN MISSIONS? TRY DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING SCHOOL
9. THANKS FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT
10. CLOSING STUFF

 1. FINAL CALL (AUG. 17) FOR HELPING DOUG WITH FOLLOWERSHIP STUDY — Good news on Doug’s dissertation. At last count, 322 followers had completed the 5-minute survey, with 223 of their respective leaders logging in afterward to complete the supervisor’s corresponding portion. (So about 100 leaders still needed to finish their 5-minute questionnaire.) That means we’re halfway there. Only 72 hours or so remains. Can the Brigada family help Doug reach his goal of 500 completed followership surveys by midnight on Aug. 17th? Remember, this doesn’t require any credit card; in fact, it doesn’t cost you a dime. It’s completely confidential. No one will call. It’s just a great way to give back something to Doug (for free!)… he can finally complete his doctorate! :-) Just a couple of hundred followers (and their leaders) to go! Remember, eligible persons would include anyone working or volunteering full-time (more or less) for a church, mission, humanitarian aid organization, or any other non-profit. Please help. Doug is desperate. Just click to: http://www.brigada.org/followership Thank you in advance. This might be the largest academic study on followership ever conducted. This is the last opportunity and the last time it will be promoted in Brigada Today. (If you would like to clip this item and forward it to some friends, we’d appreciate it.
LIES OF THE ENEMY: THE HERERO PEOPLE of NAMIBIA — Under the cool shade of a tree the Gospel was presented to a small group of Hereros. After the presentation of the Gospel, one man said, “What you are telling me makes sense. Everyone keeps telling us that we must do this or that to go to heaven. And once we get to heaven, we might not stay there.” “You’re the first person to tell us what the Bible says and to let us see it for ourselves,” he added. He told them that Jehovah’s Witnesses where just there, but now they know the truth.
MISSIONARY TECH TEAM WORKS — Here’s some user feedback on the Missionary Tech Team approach to getting a vehicle: ” We are … on furlough in the US for 8 months. We had to hit the ground running and didn’t want to mess with fixing up a donor car. So we rented a minivan from the folks at Tech Team. It’s $170/month plus $0.10/mile. Tech Team takes care of any repairs. In July the transmission of our Dodge Caravan went out. We stopped at a transmission shop, called Tech Team, and they gave their credit card info to the shop manager. The next day we were back on the road with a next transmission! We love Tech Team.” For more info., see tech’s website: http://www.missionarytechteam.org

GOOGLE NOT THE ONLY OPTION — Thanks to Allan who wrote, “Google may be the most popular search engine, but it’s not unique with its new desktop search tool. There are others, maybe just as good, or better. For some other options like Copernic and Lookout. Check out the possibilities reviewed here on Ziff Davis Net: http://tinyurl.com/5baqm (this “tinyURL” will keep the address from “wrapping”) Most of them are free, just like the google one. Unfortunately they generally work only with Internet Explorer, which is limiting for people who use the excellent (and free) Firefox or other browsers.” Thanks for the new info., Allan. Also, we should remind readers, when installing Google, you need not check the box to send information to Google for marketing purposes! In fact, we’d discourage it. Good luck and happy searching!

BOOK REVIEW — Thanks to Tony for this great review of Growth By Accident, Death By Planning: How Not to Kill a Growing Congregation Bob Whitesel (Abingdon Press, ISBN 0-687-08325- 7). Those who have read Whitesel’s previous two books (A House Divided: Bridging the Generation Gaps in Your Church, and Staying Power: Why People Leave the Church Over Change and What You Can Do About It) will rejoice to hear of his new book published this month. There are very few people with his sort of ministry – a church doctor/consultant. Most of us see things happening, for good or bad, in the lives of our churches, and have no idea what is driving these events, or how to change them. Whitesel has the insight to see the causes, explain them clearly, and propose solutions. This latest book covers the issue of churches which grow, plateau, or decline. It is packed with common- sense spiritual wisdom and practical steps that churches can take. Only church leadership teams which have no interest in growing, don’t care if they decline, lose members or have generational gaps, should avoid buying Whitesel’s books.
