3) Help Orphans Or Develop A Powerful Helps Ministry —

Aquaculture International, Inc. will be taking teams of youth and leaders to Africa and South America this summer. Those who stay all summer will have all expenses paid. They will be building places to grow fish, vegetables, greens and more in a power grid free system at orphanages. Look at the website below for the location closest location to you of a three hour presentation, two day training or Aquaponics Conference. Included will be the technology of aquaponics, combining aquaculture with hydroponics for mutual benefit, and how you can participate in the summer adventure. For more information about Aquaculture International, aquaponics and how to register go to:

http://www.aquacultureinternational.org

Students and faculty of sponsoring Colleges and Universities do not have to pay registration. The registration fee will be refunded to those who become part of the Aquaculture International Team. If you do not learn more than you have in any lengthy course that you have ever taken, your registration fee will be refunded in full.

7) Learn to Do Aquaponics —

If you want to get started producing a constant supply of fish, vegetables and other plants in an efficient, inexpensive small-scale system, plan to attend a training session in Florida, Nicaragua or Vermont. Each attendee will learn to construct and manage a variety of highly productive aquaponics systems from barrels and buckets for home or outreach. Plans will be given for a 100′ aquaponics greenhouse for less than $2000. For more information or to register, go to

[sadly, it appears that this training program has gone defunct; the web page no longer links correctly]

1) Learn fishfarming, solar, straw bale construction, and more

The folks at Empowerment Advocates International are happy to offer a new and exciting seminar called ACTS (Applied Community Technology Seminar).

In this one month seminar you will learn the basics of the design and construction of Aquaculture or fishfarming, Water pumping systems, Papercrete and strawbale home construction, Wind and solar power, and more. These are all used as a platform to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to the poor and needy of the world. You’ll then travel to Honduras where you’ll apply your new found skills. I’ve always been interested in these kinds of seminars and look forward to attending one myself someday. One pastor said, “This training is like a Jack knife in the back pocket of a missionary to help the poor and needy of the world in word and indeed.” For more information, click to

  1. TRAINING ON MICROFINANCE AND MICROENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT — The next class of the Chalmers Center’s “Principles and Practices of Christian Microfinance and Microenterprise Development” email-based distance learning course is scheduled for Jan. 7 – Feb. 22, 2008. This course gives you an overview to microenterprise development and microfinance and orients you to the selection and design of a holistic intervention appropriate for your ministry context. Cost of this seven-week course is $199 (USD) plus the cost of separately ordered course material. (The course will be offered again in Sept. 2008.)

The course is available to those who have taken the prerequisite course, “Foundations and Principles of Holistic Ministry.” The “Foundations” course helps you understand appropriate goals and strategies for conducting Christian development in poor communities within the Two- Thirds World. (It will actually benefit anyone preparing for Christian outreach and ministry among the poor, whether they plan to implement an economic development strategy or not.) This class will be offered on Feb. 4 – 29, 2008 and on April 28 – May 23, 2008, and either class offering can be taken as the prerequisite for the Sept. 2008 “Principles” class. Cost of this four-week course is $75 (USD) plus the cost of separately ordered course material.

Because these courses are email-based, slow dial-up speed will not limit participation. Also note that you may spend 8-10 hours per week on course work.

To learn more, including information about a discount for Two-Thirds World participants, or to register, visit

    http://www.chalmers.org

or call 1-706-419-1805. When registering, use Reference Identifier BRN- 10/07.

  2. GET YOUR OWN MISSIONARY WEBSITE — 411 Ministries is offering a new, upgraded service that allows any missionary to bring up their own website within 15-30 minutes without knowing any web programming. Get a free Basic website plus a donation-based Premium website. You can include your personal and family information as well as information about your sending organization. In addition, you can post pictures, prayer requests, news updates, your current support status and needs, and you or your family’s biography. Their management interface includes an easy-to-use button-driven toolbar to add formatting to all your information. Some 180 missionaries have already found a home there. 3. SHORT-TERM MISSIONS WITHOUT LONG-TERM HARM — In addition to its distance learning courses on economic development, the Chalmers Center also offers an email-based distance learning course on the issues surrounding short-term missions (less than one month) in the context of the socio-economic poor. This course presents frameworks for considering the issues so that the benefits of missions projects are maximized and potential harm is minimized. It is designed for those involved in short-term missions to locations throughout the world as well as to locations in the U.S./Canada. The training is appropriate for: 1) sending churches and denominations, 2) host churches and missionaries, 3) missions project leaders, and 4) missions team members.

The next class is scheduled for March 10 – March 28, 2008. Cost of this three-week course is $55 (USD) plus the cost of separately ordered course material.

Because the course is email-based, slow dial-up speed will not limit participation. Also note that you may spend 6-8 hours per week on course work.

To learn more, including information about a discount for Two-Thirds World participants, or to register, visit

    http://www.chalmers.org

or call 1-706-419-1805. When registering, use Reference Identifier BRN- 10/07.

  4. AQUAPONICS WORKSHOP — If you want to develop skills in the emerging technology of fish and vegetable production in a naturally balanced system, attend an upcoming Aquaponics Workshop. Learn the techniques of inexpensively constructing and managing these highly productive systems which are adaptable to all types of environments and proving to be an effective outreach ministry. Full-time missionaries can register at the student rate. For more information or to register, visit:

  14. SINCE WE LAST REPORTED… — Our good friends at Dial-Abroad sent $60.95 in thanks for those who learned about their services via Brigada. Thanks! To try Dial-Abroad’s revolutionary phone services (at a great price), just click to:

    http://www.dial-abroad.org/brigada.htm

In addition, an Oregonian sent $20, joined by a resident of Kentucky who sent $25. And a new friend from the great state of Pennsylvania sent $300!

This brings to $6,222.87 the total gifts for 2007. We publish our budget needs in the first month of the year. The 2007 budget is $17,150 for *everything*. So… sorry to say… we have quite a bit of ground to cover in the next 6 weeks. Is there *any* way you, your church, or organization could pitch in? Match the giver from Oregon, Kentucky, or Pennsylvania? We would be so grateful. When giving reaches $17,150, we’ll stop receiving money for 2007 and stop mentioning finances in Brigada Today. You have our word on it.

  15. UNDERGIRD BRIGADA, GIVE FOR A GLOBAL CITIZEN WHO CAN’T — Notice, you received this edition of Brigada for no charge. We’re a step-out-on- faith initiative. Would you consider giving an offering so that our 2007 needs are met *before* the end of the year? If so, just click “Donate“. You can pull the money from your PayPal account or from any major credit card. Or if you prefer, send a check payable to Team Expansion to: Team Expansion (Brigada secretary), 13711 Willow Reed Dr., Louisville, KY 40299. (Team Expansion is a 501(c)3 incorporation so for USA citizens, your checks made out to Team Expansion are tax-deductible.) As always, be sure to let us know if you’d like us to promote any particular service or ministry, or if you’d prefer your gift be anonymous. And thank you in advance for helping.

  16. THE BACKPAGE: THE NIGHT BEFORE A BIG TRIP — What do you do on the eve of a big trip overseas? (It’s such an evening for me tonight.)

Do your kids ask you to help them list an item on eBay? :-) My suggestion is — do it. The gesture will take you 30′ and possibly force you to stay up a half-hour longer at the end of the day, but the price will be worth it. Besides… maybe it’ll make you sleep better on the overnight flight. So in general… invest in a high quality time activity for any family member that will receive it. You’ll be glad you did.

Do you clean out your inbox? I try to, if at all possible. My outbound flight might take me out of commission for as long as 18-24 hours. So if possible, I like to be caught up so things don’t look any worse than they already are! :-)

Do you look ahead not only at the time you’ll be gone but also at the 7 days immediately after your return? Check out any deadlines or due dates for that next week so you can be working on things during your trip, if need be.

Do you make arrangements for communicating with your loved ones at crucial junctures? (e.g., arrival at an int’l port of destination, or connecting in a sensitive land) It’s extra work to arrange for cell phones, faxes, or email hook-ups. But it just seems the extra work pays off not only for the ones you love, but also for the ones making your trip possible (donors).

Finally, do you gather up all your research and notes about your trip? Get your eTicket numbers, reservation numbers, confirmation numbers, etc., and put them all in a file folder in your *carry-on*. If they’re checked, you might never see them again.

Think ahead before your trip. The time you invest on the front end can pay mongo dividends on the other side.

    Doug

  18. CLOSING STUFF

  1. IT TRULY IS A WONDERFUL BRIGADA-LIFE — Thanks to gifts from an anonymous Virginia participant ($250), another from Oregon ($100), Salem Alliance Church from Salem, OR ($100), a medical missionary in Tanzania ($200), $50 from another employee at Johnson Bible College ($50 — that’s two employees in as many weeks!), a worker in Germany ($50), another in Richmond, VA ($50), yet another from Rockville, MD ($50), a servant with www.christiansincrisis.net and finally, Roland Muller of Roland Muller Books, rmuller.com ($100 gift). That takes us from our previous base, as reported last edition, of $11,054.74 to $12,054.74.

  2. WITHIN STRIKING DISTANCE OF MAKING OUR 2006 NEED — So as you can see, we’re *so* within striking distance. That means we only have $4,595.26 to reach our 2006 need of $16,650 —– by Sunday. Gulp. But it wouldn’t be so hard… It looks like this. We just need:

1 to give 1000 — (Nobody has taken this dare yet)
    5 to give 500 — 3 down, 2 to go
    8 to give 250 — 3 down, 5 to go
    10 to give 100 — 9 down, 1 to go
    20 to give 50 — 16 down, 4 to go
    50 to give 25 — 7 down, 42 to go

Look how many folks have pitched in! Yet there are 11,000 Brigada participants in all. The question remains: Can we cover this ground by Sunday. Someone asked, “What will you do if you go *over* the goal amount?” Well please hear this: We will refuse to apply more than the $16,650 to 2006. In fact, if more money were to come in (great leap of faith), we would apply it directly to 2007. If enough money came in to cover 2007, we wouldn’t mention finances through the entire *year*! :-)

  3. ONLY FIVE DAYS LEFT TO REACH OUR 2006 NEEDS: $16,650 — Gulp. Please note… one of our partners mentioned this past week that he wished it would be possible to donate without registering for a PayPal account. Your wish is our command. We have now configured the donations site so you no longer need PayPal. You can now pay directly (simply, and quickly) with any major credit card. Just click on “Sponsor/Donate” in the top menu (to use PayPal or a credit card), or if you prefer, send a check payable to Team Expansion to: Team Expansion (Brigada secretary), 13711 Willow Reed Dr., Louisville, KY 40299. (Team Expansion is a 501(c)3 incorporation so for USA citizens, your checks made out to Team Expansion are tax- deductible.) As always, be sure to let us know if you’d like us to promote any particular service or ministry, or if you’d prefer your gift be anonymous.

  4. WANT TO KNOW THE TOP 3 CRITICAL ISSUES? — … for the Cross- Cultural Church-Planter? Find the book at:

    http://www.rmuller.com/

(And thanks, Roland, for your gracious gift to Brigada this past week.)

  5. VISIT THE PRAYER ADVOCACY MINISTRY: CHRISTIANS IN CRISIS — You’ll be inspired to advocate prayer among your own agency. See their site at:

    http://www.christiansincrisis.net

(And thanks to Christians in Crisis for helping Brigada out the door with a gracious gift this past week!)

  6. SPECIAL BRIGADA REPORT: WHAT MAKES A MISSIONARY EFFECTIVE? — Rebekah is 22 years old. Next year, she’ll move to India to begin work as a missionary there. She’ll finish Bible college in May . . . and she’s preparing in every way she can. But she’s eager to know… what’s your top-ten list of tips, thoughts, ideas, and principles that can help her become super-effective on the mission field. She’s particularly interested in hearing from veterans on the field… those who can tell her, “Here’s what made the difference.” She’ll assemble all the input into a report and file it here in Brigada in two weeks. So everybody who contributes will be able to see what everyone else recommended. When you write her, be sure to tell her if you’d rather your input be anonymous (like if you’re in a sensitive land). Likewise, be sure to tell her if you’d like to be credited… and if you’d like any particular email address or website to be listed with your input. Here’s a chance for training and resource institutions to be listed along with others around the world, all with a simple goal of saying, “Here’s how to get ready for the field.” It’s simple to participate: Just write Bekah at this address:

  8. LIFEHACKER IS A GOOD READ — Thanks to our long-time friend and contributor, Tim (a well-connected I.T. & missions guy from Cincinnati), for putting us on to

    http://www.lifehacker.com

It makes for a fun and entertaining read. (If those folks get the missions bug, Brigada would be out of business. :-) ) Sometimes I think the blog format would be great for Brigada. But then I think about all the folks who still receive Brigada via a very small pipe. (Contrary to popular opinion, not everybody has broadband yet, you know. We currently estimate that fully 1/3 of our 11,000 participants still view Brigada from developing nations with very slow Internet channels.) Still, if you’re speedy on the Internet highway, check out Lifehacker, a self-proclaimed “software and productivity guide — a blog that covers tips and tricks for streamlining your life with computers (and sometimes without).” Updated several times daily, Lifehacker “points out software downloads, web sites, do-it-yourself projects, how-to’s, tutorials, shortcuts and tips for going beyond the default settings and getting things done in the most clever, unexpected and efficient ways.” Our MAC users should be pleased. They seem to have a decided slant in that direction, if you ask me. :-) (Finally *something* mac-ish. Wait — just teasing! :-) )

  9. WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR HARD DRIVE CRASHES IN THE BUSH — What do you do when (not “if”) your hard drive gets trashed while you’re traveling or living in the middle of nowhere? Well according to Brigada participant Jonathan, your first concern will actually most likely be email and internet access before file recovery. Here is a quick fix he suggested. PuppyLinux is a free “live” CD operating system that can work without a hard drive present. Just go to

    http://www.puppyos.com/

to download the ISO, burn it to a CD and boot from that CD for a simple, yet complete OS and office solution. You can save settings to a USB drive, or install the whole thing on a 64MB USB drive, if your computer can boot from a USB drive. It’s even possible to access files from a “dead” hard drive through Puppy Linux – so burn a Puppy Linux CD and keep it nearby. Who needs a hard drive anyhow?

Important note: This strategy is like fire extinguishers and bug-out bags. It works best if you prepare things *before* the disaster.

  10. AMAZINGMAIL TURNS OUT, WELL,… AMAZING MAIL! — Now that Christmas is over, I know what you’ll say: “Thanks a *lot* Doug. Where he uploaded his picture, uploaded the email list, then amazingmail.com did the rest. They print your postcards (quality job, too; very attractive) then mail them out for you complete with postage. All that’s left for you to do is … sit back and enjoy whatever other 65 things you have to do today. Seriously folks… this is a fantastic deal for someone in a sensitive country with a good VPN. Try it out… AmazingMail.com.

  17. THE BACKPAGE: WHAT’S YOUR WISH-FOR-2007? — Got a New Year’s wish for 2007? For the final Brigada of the year, we’d love to share yours with the world. You can be personal (“I want to lose 25 pounds”), spiritual (“I *will* pray 10′ per day”), or practical (“I will be on time to work throughout 2007”). You can attach your name, or make it anonymous. You can even be romantic, as long as you are sensitive (“By the end of the year, Gladys will agree to marry me” :-) [We reserve the right to edit these; we do have under-age participants in our mix. :-) ] ). Give us a view to your life… It’ll be fun to see where everyone is headed. Please limit your text to no more than 8-10 lines max… like a typical Brigada Today item. (ok… tease me all you want. I’m thick-skinned. *Some* go over 10 lines. I know. :-) ) So have at it. Please send your item to:

WISH-FOR-2007(at)brigada(dot)org [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .] Please don’t copy me at my DLucas address. :-)

  2. OSCAR HOSTS 1000 AT VIRTUAL PARTY — On 1st March 2006, OSCAR, the web-based UK Information Service for World Mission, relaunched it’s website with a virtual party on the Internet.

“We wanted an event that would potentially involve everyone who uses the OSCAR website, wherever they are,” says Mike Frith, OSCAR’s Founding Director. The re-launch also coincided with the organisation’s sixth birthday. Within the first few days of March 1st, the website was achieving over 1000 unique users per day and on the first day over 15,000 page views were reported. Mike continues “With our new website we are seeking to build an online community of people involved or interested in world mission. We want it to provide an interface for all those who wish to engage with the world for Christ’s sake, whether they are working overseas, supporting from home or just surfing for inspiration.”

Party goers are able to play virtual hide & seek, virtual pass the parcel, and mingle with other virtual party goers during activities and discussions. Everyone is invited to join in the party which continues until the end of March at http://www.oscar.org.uk (Oscar has also pitched in $50 this past week toward Brigada’s 2006 expenses. Please support this new Brigada sponsor . . . and to the folks at Oscar, we say “Thanks!!!”)

  4. GGING ABOUT 21ST CENTURY MISSIONS — Urbana.org has just launched a new blog called Missional Hands designed to interview personnel staff from various mission agencies about one question – What is the most important skill to be a missionary in the 21st Century? Jon Hirst, Director of Communications for HCJB World Radio is writing the blog and is providing interaction for those students looking for more input on these key questions. This is a great resource for people considering missions as it asks the hard questions and tries to provide straightforward answers. Visit: http://www.urbana.org/blogs/blog.main.hands.cfm

However, Chad went beyond the call of duty and scoped out a dozen other locations that *do* take missionaries, some free, some for a charge. Click here to see the list of missionary retreat locations. (Thanks Chad!)

  14. LET THE PEOPLE PRAY: THE HERERO PEOPLE — Almost 4 years ago, God called a young man to Namibia to begin researching the unengaged peoples of this country. Would there be any people groups who had not heard the Gospel message? Yes! During his 2-year assignment, God brought across his path those from the Herero, Mbalantu, Nama/Damara and Namibian Coloured people groups. They had little or no evangelical presence among them. You have been faithfully praying that these Forgotten Peoples will have the opportunity to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ. There continues to be many barriers for evangelical work in Namibia. Pray that the Lord will send workers into His harvest field! Pray that God will raise up Namibian men and women who have a passion to share Christ. Continually lift up the Herero, an unengaged people, before the Lord. Encourage others to adopt the Herero people for prayer by visiting http://www.forgottenpeoples.info or email sf_swac(at)altonet(dot)co(dot)za

  17. THE BACKPAGE: SPEAKING INTO THE LIFE OF A PEER OR BOSS — Ever hear the term “whistleblower?” The term is usually used to describe a worker who turns in the boss or a whole company for something unethical or incompatible with principles of honesty, fairness, or other company values. How can you avoid the stigma (or the pink slip) handed to a whistleblower, while still speaking into the life of a boss or company? First, work to become a supportive insider rather than a fence-sitting cynic. Sometimes, whistleblowers are already alienated long before they get publicity for “turning someone in.” Let’s face it: those who have built up a relationship of trust can usually communicate one-on-one. They don’t have to resort to confrontational “stunts” to get their point across. (*Usually* — there are exceptions.)

Second, remember that sometimes there are circumstances beyond the control of the boss or company… “Walk a mile in their moccasins” before you become a cynic. In other words, suppose you decide to confront your boss on the company’s lack of follow-through on a policy to recruit customer support personnel, only to find that the company has worked its tail off trying to *find* customer service personnel of the quality they are seeking. What we mean is — sometimes it’s easy to critique your boss or your team from your vantage point. Only as a trusted insider will you truly understand the long-term desires of your leadership.

Third, try to figure out how you can become a part of the solution, rather than a part of the whistle. If your team is short on finances, ask if you can take a portion of your work-week to take a class on support-raising, with a view to helping shore up needed finances. If you feel your church is losing people out the “back door”, volunteer to take a few hours/week to visit new converts in an attempt to supplement the training they’re getting. You get the idea. Think like an insider… Don’t view yourself as a “victim”. You’re not stuck. Think as a belonger. Ask, “What problem is my boss facing and how can I become a part of the solution to his problem, so it will in turn help me do my job better too?”

What if things go south? What if your best efforts are misunderstood? How do you handle it if your motives are misjudged? Tune in next week for the final “BackPage” in this series.

  10. HOW ENGAGED ARE MISSIONARIES? ASK THEM! — Many companies and ministries survey their employees to learn how to create more effective work environments. But typical workplace surveys don’t address cross- cultural mission issues. So, the WEA Mission Commission, Global Mapping International, Best Christian Workplaces and Generating Change have teamed up to provide Engage!, a process to help current and former field missionaries give feedback to their agencies via email and Internet. Registration is open between now and March for U.S.-based sending agencies (other WEA national movements may consider something similar). The cost is affordable and is tiered by agency size. Learn more and register your agency to participate at: http://www.gmi.org/engage Direct questions to Jim at jim(at)gmi(dot)org [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .]

  11. BARREL AQUAPONICS – CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION – – Do you want to learn to produce a constant supply fish and vegetables in an efficient, inexpensive small-scale system which will prove to be an effective “helps ministry” outreach? If so, you will want to attend a pre- conference workshop entitled, “Barrel Aquaponics – Construction and Operation” held at Camp Living Water, Bryson City, NC, March 27 & 28, 2006. Instruction will focus on “Aquaponics”, which is the combining of aquaculture and hydroponics for mutual benefit. In addition to instruction, each attendee will be given an opportunity to construct a highly productive, small-scale system from barrels, capable of producing fish and a large variety of vegetables, greens & herbs. For more information or to register, visit: http://www.aquacultureinternational.org . Full-time missionaries can register at the student rate of $30.

  13. YOURS IN OUR LORD’S SERVICE: THANKS FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT — What a boost. In today’s mail, we received a handwritten note of encouragement from an Englishman, intent on seeing us push forward. Inside the note were two $10 bills, sent via air mail from across the Atlantic. It was signed, “Yours in our Lord’s service.” How can we not push on, after receiving notes and encouragement like that? Thank you brother! If you’d like to add to this anonymous brother’s $20, just click on “sponsor” in the top menu (to use PayPal or a credit card), or just send a check payable to Team Expansion to: Team Expansion (Brigada secretary), 13711 Willow Reed Dr., Louisville, KY 40299. As always, be sure to let us know if you’d like us to promote any particular service or ministry, or if you’d prefer your gift be anonymous.

  14. THE BACKPAGE — CHASING GOOGLE: TRY THIS EXPERIMENT — Does anybody really understand Google? I don’t. Try this experiment. (Please.) Suppose Brigada were going to move to a new site called Emerald Hills. (We are, by the way.) Suppose you were kind enough to help us explore the question, how do we promote the future home of Brigada… just to kind of help out. Well here’s that you could do:

Open your browser, go to Google.com and search for “Emerald Hills.” When you see, among other things, tons of sites relating to the city in California (Emerald Hills, CA or even “Emerald Lake Hills”) and the golf courses (Emerald Hills), :-) don’t click to them. Instead, without logging off the web, immediately do a follow-up search like… “Emerald Hills pray retreat learn” (which should bring our new Emerald Hills campus to the top of the list: EmeraldHills.info), click on the EmeraldHills.info site so Google learns that people like to go there. Now here’s the weird thing: Google apparently *learns* that you thought Emerald Hills was . . . “more relevant” to your search. In other words, Google memorizes that you found what you were looking for (or at least you *thought* you would) at EmeraldHills.info.

Now — first of all — thank you for your help (if you chose to give it). But second of all, this has big-time ramifications for your ministry. If you happen to have an email update, you could ask your constituency to do, essentially, the same thing. Instead of always giving them the link in your email update, ask them — just every once and awhile — to go to *Google* and search for it. Help them out by giving them the two-step that I mentioned in the above paragraph: First search for your site by just typing in the name of your org.; but tell them not to click on other stuff. Then give them a more exact criterion that you know will lift your site higher in the rankings, and then ask them to click through to your site now. In this way — apparently — you’ll climb up in the rankings. We did this with a dozen or so people in our home staff . . . and maybe 25 other volunteers… so 50 people in all and suddenly, Emerald Hills climbed from 93rd to 65th out of 2.8 million resulting pages. And that climb took place in just 48 hours. So… don’t just click to it — *search* for it now and then. :-)

By the way, once you’re there at the Emerald Hills site anyway, why not read one or two pages. Check out the “News” section, especially under “Dreams to Build”. Click on that article, “World Harvest Center Plans Underway.” Dream with us that one day Brigada will have an archive room in that building… one that you can visit if and when you ever pass through Louisville. Dream of prayer walking on those trails… miles of them. Imagine your missions team renting that facility to do a knock- down, drag-out, top-notch retreat focusing on prayer & missions. (OK… so I’m excited about Emerald Hills. But you get the idea. :-) ) (Oh… Once again, thanks for your help with the experiment. Now you go try it on your own organization or group.)

1. FINAL CALL (AUG. 17) FOR HELPING DOUG WITH FOLLOWERSHIP STUDY — Good news on Doug’s dissertation. At last count, 322 followers had completed the 5-minute survey, with 223 of their respective leaders logging in afterward to complete the supervisor’s corresponding portion. (So about 100 leaders still needed to finish their 5-minute questionnaire.) That means we’re halfway there. Only 72 hours or so remains. Can the Brigada family help Doug reach his goal of 500 completed followership surveys by midnight on Aug. 17th? Remember, this doesn’t require any credit card; in fact, it doesn’t cost you a dime. It’s completely confidential. No one will call. It’s just a great way to give back something to Doug (for free!)… he can finally complete his doctorate! :-) Just a couple of hundred followers (and their leaders) to go! Remember, eligible persons would include anyone working or volunteering full-time (more or less) for a church, mission, humanitarian aid organization, or any other non-profit. Please help. Doug is desperate. Just click to: http://www.brigada.org/followership Thank you in advance. This might be the largest academic study on followership ever conducted. This is the last opportunity and the last time it will be promoted in Brigada Today. (If you would like to clip this item and forward it to some friends, we’d appreciate it. Just remember it needn’t be circulated after Aug. 17, 2005.)
2. FROM CALEB PROJECT: 10-WEEK STUDY ON OUTREACH, FOR SMALL GROUPS — In an attempt to equip church leaders seeking a unified local and worldwide outreach, Caleb Project has produced a unique 10-week small- group study for adults entitled “Eternal Impact: Discover Your Role in God’s Worldwide Purpose.” This tool helps church leaders equip their congregations to reach the nations, from neighborhood to distant lands. Learn how to be Pray-ers, Senders, Goers, Welcomers, Givers, and/or Connectors. Find it at http://www.calebproject.org/store
3. PRODUCING FUELS FROM AGRICULTURAL WASTES — Are you interested in economically converting agricultural wastes into valuable fuels and efficiently utilizing the by-products as an effective “helps ministry” outreach? If so, plan to attend the Producing Fuels from Agricultural Wastes Course held at Camp Living Water, Bryson City, NC, September 27, 30, 2005. Instruction will focus on the production of methane from animal and plant waste, but other fuels will be covered, such as ethanol and bio-diesel. Included will be the construction of various types of digesters from locally available material and discarded products, day-to-day operation, utilizing the fuel for heating, running generators and other engines, the profitable use of the valuable by- products and alternative complimentary power production. The same principles can apply to the utilization of sewage for methane production. For more information or to register, visit: http://www.aquacultureinternational.org . Full-time missionaries can register at the student rate ($75).
4. SEND GLOBAL INTERNATIONAL AIRTIME — Here’s a service that allows family members and friends in the USA to keep in touch with their loved ones serving overseas. They are said to have outstanding rates to anywhere in the world with clean, quality connections. It can be used with any cellular or land line phone. Find out more and read missionary testimonials at their website. You can even try it out for free and look up rates to anywhere in the world. Click to… http://www.global-airtime.com or contact Andy toll free in the USA at 888-683-0653 or write him at cytechnologies(at)earthlink(dot)net [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .]
5. BARREL AQUAPONICS: CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION — Do you want to learn to produce a constant supply fish and vegetables in an efficient, inexpensive small-scale system which will prove to be an effective “helps ministry” outreach? If so, you will want to attend a practical workshop entitled, “Barrel Aquaponics: Construction and Operation” held at Camp Living Water, Bryson City, NC, October 10 & 11, 2005. Instruction will focus on “Aquaponics,” which is the combining of aquaculture and hydroponics for mutual benefit. In addition to instruction, each attendee will be given an opportunity to construct a highly productive, small-scale system from barrels, capable of producing fish and a large variety of vegetables, greens & herbs adaptable to all types of environments. For more information or to register, visit: http://www.aquacultureinternational.org . Full-time missionaries can register at the student rate ($25).

9. THANKS FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT — OK, I’ll admit it. It’s encouraging when someone makes a donation or sponsors or donates in any way. And you always know exactly how much comes in… and if we ever took in more than the goal for 2005, we’d just apply it to 2006 — not that that’s going to happen anytime soon though. :-) But this past week, a missionary serving in Guatemala helped us get $25 closer, enclosing a note which said, “thanking you for your service to the Christian community, anonymous.” Thank you so much for fueling our fire all the more. Would you like to help make Brigada happen next week and beyond? Your sponsorship or gift helps offset the costs of our webspace, some secretarial help, and a small amount of advertising. To chip in or make a substantial donation, just click “sponsor” in the top menu (to use PayPal or a credit card), or just send a check payable to Team Expansion to: Team Expansion (Brigada secretary), 13711 Willow Reed Dr., Louisville, KY 40299. As always, be sure to let us know if you’d like us to promote any particular service or ministry, or if you’d prefer your gift be anonymous.

  1. FAITHFUL SPONSORS… — That faithful monthly sponsor (who used the monthly link to set up a regular $10/month gift to our Brigada secretary fund, is at it again. (Thanks for the faithful sponsorship!) That brings our year-to-date total to $12,320, or about $3000 short of our full-year needs to help provide a Brigada secretary. If our prayers for you result in you inheriting some money, or if you’d just like to pitch in sacrificially — with $100 … $1000 … or whatever… — just go to

http://www.brigada.org/sponsor.html To send a check, make it out to “Team Expansion (Brigada secretary),” then send it to Team Expansion/Brigada, 13711 Willow Reed Dr., Louisville, KY 40299. We appreciate you!!!

  4. TRY APRESO — I did, this past week. *Very* impressive. Get a trial copy at: http://www.anystream.com In a nutshell, it’s a software tool to help you merge PowerPoint charts with a video — then let you spin the result out to a CD, or host them on a web page. We tried it, at Team Expansion, to generate some training materials for our team leaders … and it’s *dynamite*! Very easy, too! Check it out! (By the way, they’re not sponsors. This is just “one beggar telling another beggar where to find breath.”)

  5. HAVE YOU SENT CHRISTMAS CARDS YET? — Read the following review of AmazingMail, and maybe you will decide to give this “amazing” service a try. It meets a genuine need for lots of missionaries and others living worldwide. AmazingMail lets you go online anywhere in the world and create high quality, full color, glossy postcards. These are real postcards that AmazingMail prints for you (in the USA with best printing technology) and sends by first class, US postal mail the next business day. The cost for everything, including postage, is less than $1 per postcard. Finally, you can create and send one card, or easily send cards to your entire mailing list. They’ve been Mus1ims for 1,100 years and are known as a people resistant to the Gospel – only about 8 of the 80,000 poeple are Christians. Missionaries from SIL, AIM and World Outreach have started working among them with little fruit so far. Would you like to get involved in adopting and/or praying for them? 19. THE BACKPAGE: WHAT TO DO WITH THE FULLER RECOMMENDATIONS — Okay… I give up. What are we supposed to do with the new recommendations floating around the Internet from Fuller Theological Seminary. To see what I mean, just go to your favorite search engine, put in “Fuller prohibit proselytizing” and read any of the hundreds of pages you see, commenting on the subject. (It’s fairly heated, I guess.) The way I get it, Seminary leadership is basically asking for a two-year moratorium on proselytizing the one faith from the other. On the surface, this seems like quite an about-face from the central focal point of Donald McGavran’s “School of World Missions”, which typically teaches entire degrees in how to share Christ’s hope with Muslims. If you’ve got the “inside scoop” on this topic, please drop me a line. I’m eager to learn more. When I do, Brigada readers will be the first to know.

Check Integrity Online out at: http://www.integrity.com/index.php?siteid=19955
  2. [Note: As of Dec., 2003, only six people had subscribed to Integrity Online. As of that date, that still wasn’t even enough to produce the first sponsorship check. :-( Not a very fruitful way to fund a Brigada secretary, unfortunately.]

A SPECIAL MOMENT FOR HINDUS?

An amazing turn of events is taking place in India. Anti-caste leaders, tired of living under the oppressive tenets of Hinduism, are persuading lower caste Hindus to renounce Hinduism. Ram Raj, one such leader, is encouraging oppressed Hindus to convert to a religion (such as Buddhism, Islam or Christianity) that will give them social, educational and vocational freedom. Raj is inviting millions of lower caste Hindus to a massive conversion rally that could trigger a religious sea-change in India, launching a tidal wave of Hindus out of Hinduism.
