7) Free Tract Explains Protestants to Eastern Europeans

Eastern_EuropeThe tract “Protestants: Who are they?” is available as a free download in Russian, English, Ukrainian, Georgian, Romanian, Macedonian or Bulgarian at the site:

http://web.me.com/kerbyrials1/Booklets/Free_booklets.html

The non-denominational tract explains what evangelical Protestants believe, since they are often confused with non-Christian cults in Eastern Europe, or are accused of having departed from true Christianity (e.g. Eastern Orthodoxy or Catholicism). Versions are in both PDF and Word formats allowing you to modify the tract to meet your needs. Missionary author Kerby

  1. FUTURE MISSIONARY FELLOWSHIPS — Only one out of 100 potential future missionaries eventually join mission agencies and serve on the mission field. What if those who want to be missionaries met together in fellowship groups until each member joins a mission agency? In January and February of 2008 discussion groups will be meeting at 16 locations across the USA both to learn about and critique this ministry concept before introducing broadly in the USA (the concept has been tested and developed in Korea since 2001). To learn more about this ministry concept see the website:

    http://www.seeoursite.org/pcf/

The list of cities hosting these discussion groups is posted on the website. If you would like to participate in one of the discussion groups please write to: pcfquestions(at)gmail

(dot)com [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with . then reassemble the address onto one line.]

  2. WALL STREET JOURNAL EUROPE: “EUROPE IS LOSING HOPE” — Remember that reference we made to the Dec. 7 issue of the Wall Street Journal Europe Edition? You’ll recall that, in it, the Journal reported on a loss of hope in Europe… and a gain in fear. Some asked for details on the source. Find it at:

    http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB119698157441516372.html

  3. FORUM TO FOCUS ON UNREACHED AZERBAIJANI — The North American Azerbaijani Network will host a forum to focus on mission to the gateway Azerbaijani people of Azerbaijan and Iran on April 24-28 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This unreached people group of 40 million has only 10,000 believers (0.02%), but are a strategic people group for impacting the Persian, Turkic, Arabic, and Russian worlds. There will be opportunity to meet workers, leaders, agencies, resource people, and partnership facilitators, both national and ex-pat, who are involved in mission to these people, and to gain a better understanding of this people group and how your organization might get involved. For more information please email azpartnership(at)galacticomm

(dot)org [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with . then reassemble the address onto one line.]

  4. I KEEP HEARING MORE ABOUT BIBLES BEING PRINTED IN CHINA — Are you seeing all the press about groups such as Amity Printing, printing Bibles in China? Even if the Bibles are meant for use out of China, it’s still a positive sign, some say, that China is allowing (and even endorsing) so much printing of the sacred book. One can only hope that some of the books land in the hands of Chinese! (Thanks Bob!)

  5. SUPPORT RAISING TRAINING — The BodyBuilders “Personal Support Raising Boot Camp” is a two-day intense training for first-time support raisers and under-funded veterans. Their goal: Getting you to 100% in 100 days! Check out their website for more details at

    http://www.thebodybuilders.net

    or email them at info(at)thebodybuilders

(dot)net [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with . then reassemble the address onto one line.] You’ll find there the complete schedule for upcoming events.

  6. EXPLORE THE LAND — Are you pioneering a new ministry or seeking deeper insights into the culture where you live or the group your church has adopted? Move the ministry forward, mobilize informed prayer, and give short-termers a great taste of frontier ministry by hosting and coordinating a short-term research project. Caleb Project did research teams like this for about 20 years. Some of the former staff now consult on such projects and provide training. An Ethnography Training Course is planned for February 4-9, 2008 in Littleton, Colorado. For more information click on the ‘learn’ tab at

    http://www.takeitglobal.org

or write to research(at)takeitglobal (dot)org” [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with . and reassemble the address onto one line.]

  7. MISSIONS STRATEGY RESOURCE ON CD — Every church needs a missions strategy. If you want to revise or develop a strategy or if you help churches in missions, get the Strategy CD entitled Developing a Missions Strategy that Fits Your Church. The CD contains a leader’s guide, a participant workbook, PowerPoint slides, and multiple supplemental documents. For more information or to order go to

  8. GET INSIGHT, GET CREDIT (ATTN: HIGHSCHOOLERS) — High school grads can earn a year of college credit for taking INSIGHT, a global studies/comparative worldview program of the U.S. Center for World Mission. Students take classes at the Pasadena, CA, campus or at regional locations across the U.S., earning 32 units of college general education credit, then transfer to the college and major of their choice. INSIGHT offers small class sizes, integrated coursework, tuition competitive with public colleges, and a supportive missionary community for the homeschooled student or re-entering TCK. Contact insight(at)uscwm

(dot)org for more information or an application. [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with . then reassemble the address onto one line.]

  9. ADD FUEL TO THE FIRE: PARTNER WITH BRIGADA — We’re in the final week… in fact, the final few days. Would you ask your church, group, family, or your own bank account to chip in for Brigada, if not because of your own use, then how ’bout on behalf of someone overseas who can’t? If so, thanks!!! Just click on the “Sponsor/Donate” page:

    http://www.brigada.org/donate.html

Really, we only need 92 more people, groups, or churches. Would you be one of those 92??? We have 4 more days left, counting today. If you *can’t* give, would you be willing to ask someone who might? We really only need *one* person to give $1000. Would you be willing to be that one person? As we say above, we’ve made progress, but still need the following gifts to meet our ministry needs…

    1 of 1 more gift of $1000
    2 of 5 more gifts of $500
    8 of 250 more gifts of $250
    5 of 13 more gifts of $100
    20 of 27 more gifts of $50
    56 of 70 more gifts of $25

You can pull the money from your PayPal account or from any major credit card. Or if you prefer, send a check payable to Team Expansion to: Team Expansion (Brigada secretary), 13711 Willow Reed Dr., Louisville, KY 40299. (Team Expansion is a 501(c)3 incorporation so for USA citizens, your checks made out to Team Expansion are tax-deductible.) As always, be sure to let us know if you’d like us to promote any particular service or ministry, or if you’d prefer your gift be anonymous. And thank you in advance for helping.

  10. THE BACKPAGE: WHAT’S THE BIGGEST IMPACTOR ON MISSIONS IN 2007? — Well, the end is near — the end of the year, that is. And Merry Christmas, by the way. Hope your holiday season is going smoothly. As we turn the corner toward New Year’s, there’s a tendency in all of us to look back… and look forward. Let’s start with the “back” part. AS you ponder 2007, what do you think has to be the biggest news story or event when it comes to world missions? What current event, person, place or thing had the biggest impact on missions this past year? Nominate your favorite… just browse to

  1. GET A POPULAR EVANGELISTIC VCD FOR CHINA FOR YOUR PEOPLE GROUP — There is a popular evangelistic VCD in China called “Hao Xiaoxi” (Good News) and nobody really knows who created it or where it came from. The VCD is in Mandarin Chinese. Recently, a worker had the soundtrack completely redone without the Mandarin narration and speaking parts, and is now dropping in the language of the minority group with which he works. He has a feeling there are a lot of folks out there working in China among minority groups who would benefit greatly from this “wordless soundtrack”. If this interests you, please send an email to his secure address: taihaole(at)pobox(dot)com [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .] He will try to get you the soundtrack on DVD. (Hats off to this servant-hearted worker!)

  2. WHAT’S THE “BEST RESOURCE” FOR A MISSIONS MINISTRY TO STUDY? — Steve is a great friend of mine and a missions minister in Columbus, Ohio. He’s on the hunt for the one best book (besides the Bible) or video for a missions ministry to read/study together. Let’s come up with the best list we can . . . and get the word out to all those who have similar interests. Post your best answer at…

    http://brigada.org/brigade/?p=23

    Thanks!

  3. TOP FIVE ARTICLES ON PRESENTING YOUR WORK — Digital Web Magazine recently featured “top five articles” on giving great presentations. They sum up the best of the best principles, as well as what to avoid. To see the link, click to

Click on the link to this Brigada Today, then scroll down to this item and click the link that will be here:

    http://www.digital-web.com/news/2007/02/top_five_articles_for_presenters/

We aren’t featuring the link in this email because it’s long and would wrap … and going to brigada.org is way cooler than clicking on a “tinyurl” link that you can’t really see.

  4. MEDEX HOT SPOTS — Thanks to Team Expansion’s Global Security Coordinator, “Jim”, for giving us this tip —

    http://www.medexassist.com/hotspots/default.html

It’s a list of political and security hot spots around the world. They update the page often, as needed.

  5. CULTURE SHOCK RUSSIAN STYLE! — Getting ready to visit Russia? “Peterburgers” is a humorously-piled platter that’s culturally insightful and spiritually challenging. Treat yourself and your loved ones to true and funny adventures in Russia’s cultural capital told with culture shock training for missionaries (and their supporters back home) in mind. Order by contacting Bill bill(at)billandrobinharris(dot)com [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .] Copies are $10.00 per copy (plus shipping) or $8.00 per copy when you order two or more. Bite down on “Peterburgers”!

  6. CASE STUDIES AND LEARNING TOOLS FROM CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE — The folks at City Gate

  7. SIBERIAN RAIL ADVENTURE BOOK — “The Great Siberian Rail Adventure” is the hilariously heart-stopping, true story of the Harris family’s journey by car, ship, and rail across Russia. Come along and you’ll find a dragon, an axe-wielding conductor, a supersonic clothes washer, and a van with a death wish. This book reports on some of the amazing things God is up to today through saturation house church planting, as well as providing biblical insights, historical lessons, and practical strategies. 9. CAN YOU HELP THIS RESEARCHER OF MISSIONS WORK DONE BY WOMEN? — Here’s a researcher looking to find the number of women currently involved in missions worldwide and training opportunities for women desiring to join the mission field. She writes, “My goal is to determine if there is a worldwide need for more women in missions and if there are sufficient training programs for women who are interested in dedicating themselves to God work in the mission field.” If you can help, post a comment at: http://brigada.org/brigade/?p=24

If you’d rather correspond directly with her personally, about something you can’t say openly on the web, write Elaine at Elaineschrank(at)aol(dot)com [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .]

  10. THANKS TO THOSE WHO CHOOSE TO SPUR US ON — We are so grateful for those who take initiative to encourage us with a financial gift to help with our expenses and spur us on toward the future. We invest the money in webhosting, some small marketing projects, secretarial costs, as well as projects for world evangelism. Nothing is wasted. This past week, we rec’d a $180 gift from a very active worker with an interest in Asia. We praise God for his efforts. We also rec’d $20 from an anonymous staff member of Studio TEN Ministries. Dial-abroad pitched in another $38.70. To take advantage of their great low rates for long distance, click to:

  11. JOIN THOSE WHO MAKE BRIGADA POSSIBLE — Want to help? Just click to:

    http://www.brigada.org/donate.html

You can pull the money from your PayPal account or from any major credit card.

  12. THE BACKPAGE: REFLECT, REPENT AND REBOOT — I saw an email cross my screen last week with a signature, “Reflect, Repent, and Reboot.” I chuckled to myself, then later thought… You know, that’s actually a pretty cool concept. The “ctrl-alt-delete” three-key combination is widely-known in the IBM-compatible PC world. MAC users usually insist that they don’t have to reboot as often :-) , but they still have the capability by clicking on the Apple button then hitting “Restart.” The metaphor is pretty interesting. In computing, one usually reboots because “something’s just not quite right.” The operating system is slowing down, or halted completely because of an error or a system crash. Sometimes the whole thing just freezes up — with no explanation.

Life is like that. We trip up, commit an error, and suddenly confront the fact that we’ve sinned. There seems to be no way out — and then we remember the magic of starting over. We “reflect, repent and reboot.” Suddenly, life is good. We’re back in the groove. There’s a lilt in our step. We feel light-shouldered again. Romans 8:1 reads, ” Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Sigh. Thank goodness we can start over. Hit control-alt-delete in your life, today. (Thanks to the anonymous correspondent who included that in his/her signature!)

  7. STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE IN SHORT-TERM MISSION — U.S. churches, schools and agencies have come together to set national standards of excellence (SOE) for short-term mission. The seven standards come at a time when more than one million U.S. short-termers serve each year on mission projects of varying quality. Adopting and implementing the standards lets the world know your short-term mission programs operate according to a code of best practices that emphasizes mutual partnership between senders and receivers. Churches, agencies and schools can use these standards as a tool to improve training, relationships with field partners, ministry effectiveness, and debriefing and follow-up. Membership brings professionally structured guidance for achieving goals and an impressive network of organizations offering opportunities for resource sharing, improved training, minimized risk and mentoring. For more information, visit

    http://www.stmstandards.org

or call 1-866-SOE-8221. A Standards Introductory Workshop will be held Jan. 18-19, 2007 during pre-conference seminars at the National Short- Term Mission Conference in Los Angeles, CA. See

  10. THANKS FOR FUELING THE BRIGADA MISSIONS FIRE — Thanks so much for the anonymous gifts of $20, $50, $25, $5, and $20 to Brigada! Your generosity and partnership is *such* a shot in the arm! That’s why I’m up at midnight tonight doing this! Thanks, too, for the gift of $150 from VisionSynergy. Learn more about their ministry at:

    http://www.visionsynergy.net/

This organization picks up where Interdev left off . . . and goes well into the future by connecting networks that can make a difference! Thanks, Bill, for the tremendous help and hope!

Also we’re grateful for Insurance Services of America (ISA) for their sponsorship of $70.87, due to the overseas travel by folks from College Heights Christian Church in Joplin, MO. (Go College Heights!) It’s a win-win situation. College Heights gets fare protection for all their flights, in case something goes haywire on their trips… and Brigada gets more fuel for the fire of missions! Love it. Learn more about your options with ISA at:

    http://www.missionaryhealth.net/brigada.htm

Thanks, too, to Blessed Hope for their $9.27 gift due to long distance phone use. Sign up for their very reasonably-priced services at:

    http://www.lowermyphonebill.com/brigada

Finally — get this — Covenant College’s Chalmers Center has come through again to help us with a $600 gift — as a thank-you note for telling the world about their great programs to help missionaries all over the world. Learn more at

    http://www.chalmers.org

I’m *completely* humbled by their help — which is allowing us to make good progress toward our hopeful outcome of $16,650 during 2006. We started last edition with 6795.85. Add this edition’s $950.14 and we now stand at 7,745.99! yahoooooooooooooooo! :-)

  11. COULD YOU HELP FUEL OUR FIRE TO FINISH THE COURSE? — Want to get on board and pass some fuel for the missions fire at Brigada? (We’d be eternally grateful!) Just click on “sponsor” in the top menu (to use PayPal or a credit card), or if you prefer, send a check payable to Team Expansion to: Team Expansion (Brigada secretary), 13711 Willow Reed Dr., Louisville, KY 40299. As always, be sure to let us know if you’d like us to promote any particular service or ministry, or if you’d prefer your gift be anonymous. In any case, thanks for considering Brigada in your estate giving, your monthly church missions fund, and/or your own personal giving for this calendar year. (Nobody has ever put Brigada in their will to date, as far as we know. But we keep saying that because we think it would be cool if it ever happened. After all, you’ll be gone anyway. Will anyone notice getting 1% less of your estate if you prescribe that 1% to go to Brigada? :-) )

  12. THE BACK PAGE: “HOW DO I GET FED?” — That question arose in a talk recently with a young missionary. How do we make sure our missionaries continue their spiritual growth… eating at a banquet table of spiritual food … while they’re serving overseas. Some churches mail sermon tapes. Others allow missionaries to tap into their streaming audio — at not cost (other than the missionaries having to pay for the throughput on the field side — a common practice by ISPs overseas). Still others actually send books & even delegations of people to lead in pastoral care visits. But in the end, how can the missionary him/herself take initiative to make sure the spiritual feeding happens?

If we’re truly trying to prioritize, it seems we would place that question high on the list of tasks missionaries face. Their kids are losing their youth group, the wives are leaving their ladies ministries, and the guys are missing out on that Thursday morning accountability group. So what’s a body to do?

I wish more of us could put studies like these on the web:

    http://www.thetask.org/thETASK/biblestudy/

If more of us took this kind of initiative, there’d be more meat on the web. I also wish our missions agencies would come up with more input on this topic. Here I am, president of a mission organization with 300 workers, and I find myself wishing that we did more for our workers overseas too.

Got ideas? Got resources? Write a quick paragraph to: how-do-I-get-fed(at)googlegroups(dot)com [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .] The emails go only to me. This googlegroup is basically just a way to collect these items. I’ll gather up all the input and make sure it’s presented later in another issue of Brigada Today. Let’s find out what’s happening now… and what *should* happen long-term on this important topic.

  1. AMAZING SPONSORS EDGE CLOSER TO FULLY PAID SECRETARY — I continue to be amazed at these outlandishly encouraging sponsors. Recently, R.G. wrote, ” I have been reading Brigada since 1997 or so and always find great stuff. Thanks for your ministry from another Wycliffe mobilizer!” Along with his message, he sent via PayPal…. $100! Yahooo! Thanks also to Wilcannia River of Life for their partnership gift of $50. See them in the next item!

  2. GET CHRISTIAN-BACKED LONG DISTANCE, PAY 4.9 CENTS/MIN — If you’re located in the USA, now you can get Christian-owned and -operated long distance for just 4.9 cents/minute, and a portion of every minute you’re talking to your Aunt Lorraine will be given to Brigada! Blessed Hope Long Distance has set up a page at: http://www.lowermyphonebill.com/brigada/ Specifically for Brigada participants! Give it a try… and it will cost you nothing to help Brigada obtain enough funding for a Secretary! Thanks for your help!

  3. CROSS CULTURAL MISSIONS TRAINING IN DOWN UNDER — Are you interested in Cross Cultural Missions Training? Wilcannia River of Life is hosting an Effective Aboriginal Ministry Seminar/Convention in Wilcannia, NSW, Australia from November 26th-30th inclusive. Training in all aspects of ministry, especially amongst the Australian Aboriginies. For further information, log on to: http://www.wilcanniariveroflife.com or contact Pastor Scott Lamshed wilcanniariveroflifeatbigponddotcom (Thanks for your partnership with Brigada!!!)

  4. PUBLIC SPEAKING TRAINING FOR MISSIONARIES — Now you can get “Sharing the Bread of Life”, by Wentworth Pike (ACTION International). It’s a practical guide of how to organize, outline, and communicate God’s Word clearly and effectively. This book is intended for those who are inexperienced in public speaking and is excellent to equip new missions recruits who may be called on to speak anytime, anywhere! Get it from Gabriel Resources, which, by the way, offers discounts to individuals, missionaries, mission organizations and churches. Email orderatomlitdotomdotorg or call 1-8MORE-BOOKS (1-866-732-6657) toll-free in the USA & Canada or 706-554-1594.

  5. PRAYER GROUP TRAINING PROGRAM — Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF) is offering training for prayer groups on Saturday, November 1, 2003 at Peninsula Covenant Church – 3560 Farm Hill Blvd., Redwood City, CA 94061. Check-in and refreshments begin at 8:30am. Register today by sending email with name, address, telephone, email and name of home church to Julie omfconferenceatyahoodotcom or telephone (925) 459- 0734. For more information, see http://www.us.omf.org/northwest
By the way, this program is offered free of charge to all attendees. Learn how you can change Asia through the power of prayer. Their prayer is to have 6 or more vibrant prayer groups throughout the Bay Area. You can subscribe to the OMF Bay Area Mission Update (quarterly email newsletter) by sending an email to omf_bayarea-subscribeatyahoogroupsdotcom

  6. LATEST ON THE WAR AGAINST SPAM — Yikes. These Linux people are churning out the options. Check out SpamAssassin . “T.C.” says it’s worth a look… and superior to SpamBouncer. And… did I tell you I’ve voluntarily stopped using the “bounce” feature in MailWasher? After receiving several emails criticizing its deceitful nature, I decided I’d better bow out of it. I still use MailWasher to filter and flag spam, then delete it at the press of a button, but I configured the program to *not* send back the bounce-a-grams to the spammers. For one thing, folks told me it was a white lie. But what’s more, others pointed out that the reply addresses were almost *always* contrived. So the only people suffering from my combative mortar “return fire” were the ISPs being targeted by spammers themselves — by listing them in their “From:” boxes.

  7. VOLUNTEER MUSIC MISSIONS OPPORTUNITY — Volunteer Christian musicians are needed to help lead a music leadership training camp for one week in Les Cayes, Haiti. The camp is used to train music leaders for churches, new church starts, and for evangelism and church planting. The focus of the camp is composition of Chronological Bible Story-songs using indigenous Haitian musical styles. For more information, please write to: dawndotgoodwinatcbregiondotcom or may call directly to Haiti: (011-509-245-5988) This is sponsored by the International Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention. The dates of this opportunity are July 31-August 10, 2004.

  8. “PARADIGMS OF THE FUTURE” REMIXED — We’ve gotten some negative feedback on our listing of “Paradigms Of The Future” (Item #6 in the 9/19 edition), on the web at http://www.christianfutures.com Thanks to “Joseph”, in Japan, who did some major reading on the site and discovered sections which talk of “no hell and all creeds and beliefs can work together for the God of Gods.” Thanks for the feedback, Joseph… and you raise a good point. We do our best to try to watch out for off-the-wall stuff… but please always remember to check these things out for yourself. See the “DISCLAIMER” section in the “Closing Stuff” below. That having been said, we’ll try, whenever possible to catch this kind of thing and give you a heads up. Just always remember that some are going to get through the gate. In this case, we knew the contributor and his reputation… so we assumed it was all okay. Lesson learned.

  9. IN SEARCH OF MISSING BETHANY PROFILES — We’re still trying to find out what happened to all the Bethany Unreached People Profiles. Dan Scribner recently wrote to us about it. He’s the former research guy for AD2000 & Beyond… and current stats guy for JoshuaProject.net. His findings? “The base URL was changed from www.bethany.com to www.bethanynorth.com The rest of the URL seemed to the be same except in a few cases of the cluster peoples. Just two weeks ago this was true. I redid all the Joshua Project profiles to point to the new URLs. … However, when I tried today, www.bethanynorth.com was a deadend / 404. Not sure what the deal is. Will let you know if I find differently.” Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to find any further word on this dead-end trail. :-(

  10. MISSIONS GATHERINGS IN EUROPE? — IIbET (Iberoamerican Institute for Cross Cultural Studies, http://www.iibet.org) is interested in knowing of the Missions Gatherings and Events around Europe, particularly those who are focused on the Muslim world. Also, a list is being put together of all the Hispanic (Spanish speaking) churches in Europe. If you can help with either one of these areas, please write Dan Johnson djohnsonIVatmyrealboxdotcom . (Dan, please let us know what you find and we’ll post it here in Brigada.)

  11. BRIGADA READERS FIND HOPE AT HEALING FOR THE NATIONS — For eleven years, Healing for the Nations Intensive Retreats have been a source of healing and hope for people from all over the world. Recently, some Brigada subscribers responded to the HFN ad placed in Brigada Today and made the journey to Atlanta to attend the one week retreat held monthly at a beautiful place called Red Top Mountain north of the city. As one of those missionaries put it, “My only regret is that I didn’t do the retreat about ten years ago”. If the wear and tear of ministry and/or life in general has taken it’s toll and you need a safe place to find hope again, check them out at http:www.healingforthenations.org You may also call them at the following: 1 800 483 2841 (in the US) or 770 919 0140.

  12. ENCOURAGING DEVOTIONAL FOR MISSIONARY TEACHERS — Regain your passion and enjoyment for teaching with “Apples of Gold for Teachers”, a perfect book for any instructor–K thru 12. Each of the 50 meditations includes practical time-tested ideas for the classroom teacher. Nice gift book as well. Even better, all your friends in the US city of your choice can call you for free. Or friends from anywhere in the USA can call you overseas for the price of a US call. To good to be true? Or call toll free at 1-(888) 898- 8733 or outside the USA at 1(408) 727-1885 or email tech-supportatpacket8dotnet (Note that this is not from a Brigada sponsor, nor have we tried this service personally, but we feature items from all contributors, regardless. Just wanted you to know that we aren’t into any full-out advertising mode here. Brigada is still Brigada.)

  14. HOW CAN YOU SPOT A “PRAYER SPAMMER?” — This is a great question. Fred, a Brigada participant, wrote recently to ask about this. He had received several messages that ended something like… “Send this prayer request to 10 people.. to show them you love them, if you are not ashamed of Jesus,” or something similar. I’m not sure how to respond to this kind of message. I already receive a hundred or more prayer/mission reports per month. You probably receive more than your share too. My suggestion: Give people the honest option, before just assuming that you should add to their mix. Even if a really spiritual guy prays a full hour a day, there’s still an eventual *limit* to how many things for which he or she can pray. So give ’em a break… and ask before you assume they’ll want to be on your list.

  15. LAST CHANCE TO BUY THE CD-ROM TOOL — Don’t forget… You only have a until the end of October to get the special introductory pricing on the “Countries and Peoples of the World” CD-ROM, a Brigada sponsor. The stated aims of the project are:
*** MOTIVATE individuals and churches to PRAY for the least reached countries and peoples of the world.
*** ORIENT individuals and churches to ADOPT one or more of the least reached peoples of the world
*** EQUIP individuals and churches to GO and work long term among one or more of the least reached peoples of the world.
*** SEND and SUSTAIN individuals and church planting teams engaged in EVANGELIZING and DISCIPLING of the least reached peoples of the world through STRATEGIC ALLIANCES and PARTNERSHIPS. This *library* of unreached people profiles, country profiles, and missions info. is one of the best sources for quality, up-to-date, motivational information. Get it at: http://www.ywam.org/books/countries_and_peoples.htm

  16. SAVE ON INT’L CALLS — Learn how other missionaries save on international phone calls at http://www.brigada.org/phone.html (Disclaimer: :-) Thanks to UTW for promising to give a gift to Brigada in the name of each and every new signer at that page! At last update, 10 Brigada readers had signed up! Thanks for giving it a try!)

  1. MISSION HELP – FOR MISSIONARY AGENCIES — Mission Help is designed as a tool to help facilitate questions and responses from one missionary agency to many missionary agencies. Occasionally, one missionary agency will find a better way to do things that may be of some benefit to other mission organizations. To exchange ideas, subscribe to Mission Help and join in emailing questions and responses to members. You may also visit Mission Help’s website to see some of the resources available by going to http://missionhelp.injesus.com

  2. HUMAN RESOURCE AND MISSIONARY TRACKING PROGRAM NEEDED — Brian <bmastersatcaminternationaldotorg  (bmastersatcaminternationaldotorg)  > is looking for a good program to track missionaries, their ministries, their vital information, their education, etc.? (HR stuff). If you’ve got a lead, please drop him a note… and he’ll report back here in a couple of weeks.

  3. ENGLISH FOR MISSIONARIES (EFM) — Here’s a seminar being offered from September 8 to December 5, 2003 at Gateway Missionary Training Centre near Vancouver, Canada. EFM is an intensive course designed to take advanced learners (IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 500) to university entrance level (IELTS 6 or TOEFL550). It is also meant for missionaries who need a higher level of English in order to work more effectively on a multi- national team. Each week twenty-one hours of instruction are given. The course fee is $2100 Canadian or approximately $1400 US. The fee includes tuition, room, board, textbooks, internet access and transportation to and from the airport. Health insurance, long distance phone calls and other personal expenses are not covered. The course is open to twelve students. For more information or applications write <infoatgatewaytrainingdotorg> or log on at: http//www.gatewaytraining.org </infoatgatewaytrainingdotorg>

  4. CD-ROM RECRUITMENT: IS IT EFFECTIVE? — Brian <bmastersatcaminternationaldotorg  (bmastersatcaminternationaldotorg)  > would like to know the effectiveness of CD-Rom recruitment tools that many ministries use. Has anyone studied the return on investment for this medium? How many people joined or found out about the organization because of the CD? Is the CD the main tool or does it supplement other materials? What type of response is your organization receiving because of the CD? Are the people responding in their 20’s-30’s; 30’s-40’s; 40’s-50’s; etc.? How has it affected donations? Jot him a note… and he’ll report his findings back here in a couple of weeks.

  5. CHRISTIAN MISSIONS AND THE KURDS . . . BEFORE SADDAM! — Here’s a book resource for understanding the church’s approach over the centuries to the people of Kurdistan which includes Northern Iraq and Eastern Turkey. “Ethnic Realities And The Church: Lessons From Kurdistan, A History of Mission Work”, 1668-1990, by Robert I. Blincoe, 1998, 263 pp., is essential reading for those wishing to take the gospel to a post-Saddam Kurdistan. Ethnic Realities can be purchased from the Presbyterian Center for Mission Studies, 1605 E. Elizabeth Street, Pasadena, CA, 91104 for $12.95 plus S & H. Website: http://www.prescms.org/pcms_resources.html or email <pcmsatpcusadotorg  (pcmsatpcusadotorg)  >.

  6. ANSWERING ISLAM CD-EDITON NOW AVAILABLE — Looking for a comprehensive resource on all things Islamic? Here is what you need: The CD edition of Answering Islam ( http://www.answering-islam.org ) gives you some 270 MB of resource material on understanding Muslims and Islam, evangelistic tracts designed for Muslims, articles defending the Christian faith against the attacks of Muslim polemics, answers to common and uncommon Muslim questions regarding the Bible and the position of Jesus Christ, more than a hundred testimonies of converts from Islam to Christ, an analysis of the political side of Islam and much more. It’s a vast library of some 5,000+ articles and classical out-of-print and hard-to- get books, mostly English, but includes material in eight languages (even a ninth in the first downloadable update to the CD). And the best: The CD comes with the permission to freely copy and distribute it (as long as that is done free of charge) plus regular free internet updates of the CD content as this is a fast growing site. Price: US-$ 15.00 plus shipping. Order the CD: http://www.answering-islam.org/ordercd.html For further questions, email (please manually remove the two _ characters before emailing)

  7. AVIATION MINISTRY IN CENTRAL ASIA — An aviation group dedicated to meeting the needs of believers (encouraging isolated folks, reaching many unreached groups via many organizations) as well as a blessing to the region (medical and food drops, ambulance flights) is starting in central Asia. Future plans include reaching all of the “-stans” with low-cost flights and cargo deliveries — stuff the commercial guys don’t handle. For less than the cost of an aviation engine in the West, they’ll be flying a freshly refurbished plane, as well as employing locals. If you’d like to fly for them — or pray for them — contact Robert at <robertsatvpn2000dotnet  (robertsatvpn2000dotnet)  >.

  8. WANT TO LEARN HOW TO RAISE FUNDS? — See if you can get a spot at “The Jesus Film Project Development Training Seminar”, to be held in San Clemente, from 1:30 pm until 5:30 pm on Thursday, April 24, and 9:00 am until 3:30 pm on Friday. 9. LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO SERVE? —- Do you hanker for the time when people worked with their hands and went to bed tired?
