1) NEED ANONYMOUS WEBMAIL? — Now you can get it . . . and the staff people are folks you can trust. The leadership at Global Resources for Computing (GRC) actually hails from MAF’s old “xc.org” legacy. Down through the past few years, these are the same guys that have consistently tried to fuel information technology for global missions. Now working under the banner of GRC, they’ve set up a SSL (Secure) Webmail service to beat the band. It’s anonymous — meaning that you could use it for sensitive messages, where higher standards of security are required. This new service will offer SSL Based Webmail, POP3 and IMAP services. The service is due to roll out April 20th, 2002. Currently GRC is accepting applications for Beta Testers to test the new service in field type use. There is no charge for the beta testers to use the service during the beta testing period (Mar 12 – Apr 18th). If you or your organization is interested in Beta Testing this new service, please contact GRC at (909) 795-3877 or FAX (909) 795-0327 or email <infoatgrcomputingdotnet>. This offer is open to individuals and organizations involved in non-profit humanitarian organizations, or faith based ministries. GRC will be offering the service on a monthly subscription basis. The fees will be affordable for individuals and there will be price breaks for multiple addresses or corporate users. Read more at http://www.grcomputing.net</infoatgrcomputingdotnet>

7) NEW MULTI-MEDIA MINI-MISSIONS COURSE — Mission ONE leaders say their new multi-media course is like a Perspectives all rolled up in a dynamic, live 6-hour seminar. It’s purpose is to help mobilize local churches in North America for missions — and serve the unique vision of the local church family at which it is presented. They bill it as being “Perfect for mission conferences, Operation WorldView covers the Biblical, Historical, Cultural, and Strategic aspects of global missions.” Check out the Mission ONE web site:

(Have you ever seen *any* pages in Cebuano before? :-) ) These people are raising the bar for great web-missions outreach and training. They also have Moore, Russian, Hindi, Telegu, Portugues, Spanish, Romanian and Indonesian, and even 25 pages so far in Chinese! Way to go Les.

9) TRAIN IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE — Lifewater International (on the web at:

http://www.lifewater.org )

will be holding “Participatory Hygiene Education Training” seminars in April and July 2002. The seminars are specifically designed to give short-term Christian workers an alternative to traditional missions trips focused on curative medical clinics. Short-term overseas medical clinics typically focus on western style curative care without addressing the root causes of disease. Participatory Hygiene Education involves people in the local community in the process of determining their health problems, how to prevent them and how to train others in the process. Based on Medical Ambassadors International Community Health Evangelism program, Lifewater’s hygiene training program integrates scriptural and physical principles to address the cycle of disease and death related to water, sanitation and hygiene practices. For more information or for a registration packet, contact Trudy at Lifewater. 1-888-543-3426 or 1-805-772-0600 or email <trudyatlifewaterdotorg>. The April class will be held in California and the July class will be held in Texas. Registration deadline for the April class is </trudyatlifewaterdotorg>April 1, 2002.

10) SCHOOL OF FRONTIER MISSIONS IN SOUTH ASIA — Do you have a heart for the unreached in South Asia? The YWAM Frontier Missions Centre of South Asia is hosting it’s next School of Frontier Missions from July 1, 2002 – September 20, 2002. This school is addressing the challenge of reaching the 4,500+ unreached people groups in South Asia by training and equipping people to join teams. In this school you will learn practical skills and attitudes necessary to effectively see a church plant movement among an unreached people group. Course topics are taught by experienced South Asian and international speakers. A two year internship working among an unreached people group will follow the 12-week classroom phase. 11) STATS NEEDED: % GOING TO THE UNREACHED — One of Caleb Project’s hallmarks has been the “World-View Demonstration,” a skit which uses volunteers to illustrate demographics such as world religions, level of gospel-reachedness, and missionary sending. Nate Wilson is helping with a revision of this demonstration to update the statistics from the time the skit was developed twenty years ago, and is looking for current documentation which could substantiate (or update) the statistic of one out of ten missionaries going to the unreached part of the world. Can you help him find up-to-date documentation on what percentage of foreign missionaries are sent to unreached parts of the world? Send Nate an email if you have information for him: <nwilsonatcprojectdotcom>, and yes, Nate will get back with us when he has his answer!</nwilsonatcprojectdotcom>

12) ENGLISH CURRICULUM — Many of you have heard of and used the EFCM International Network ESL curriculum Adventures In English in your outreach programs. This Bible-based curriculum has been used in many countries by missionaries and national host churches. They have now cleaned up the 12 English lessons so that they can be used in creative access countries. International Network also has a non-Bible reading book for intermediate and advanced readers. The book, called Pathfinders, contains 12 short biographies of American who changed the way we live. Each reading lesson also includes related questions and activities. Send an e-mail to Don <donatoecatcsdotcom> for more information. Ask for the Adventures in English curriculum, the Clean Adventures book or Pathfinders.</donatoecatcsdotcom>

14) A NEW REALITY: MULTICULTURAL TEAMS — What are the questions we fail to ask in multicultural teams? What are the identity issues of the workers unique to these teams? Are there extra stress factors? What role do the different forms of logic play? How does this play out in relationships? decision-making? leadership? And what about the things that trip us up so easily – retreats and relaxation? And the Achilles heel – finances and lifestyle? Are there advantages to working in multicultural teams?

What issues need to be attended to most in selection and training people for these teams? How can leadership prepare their workers for such teams? These and other related subjects will be handled in a workshop from 27-31 May 2002 offered by Lianne Roembke in Limassol, Cyprus. Dr. Roembke has been involved in training such teams for over 25 years and it was the subject of her doctoral dissertation. For more information see

15) LIFE INSURANCE FOR OVERSEAS MISSIONARIES — With the tragic events of 9/11 it may be prudent to review your life insurance program and determine if your family will be financially provided for in the case of death. Adams & Associates International (sm) can arrange a 5-year level premium, level term life insurance policy for overseas missionaries through Lloyd’s, London. The initial application proposal is subject to medical underwriting and possibly rated for geographical location including current political and world events. Once the application proposal is approved, the terms agreed to by the applicant and a policy issued, the annual premium rates are level for the 5 year term. The policy is renewable if overseas service is maintained. The cost of international life insurance is now, more than ever, based on world events and location, which we all know, can change quickly and without notice. For complete information, contact Adams & Associates International (sm) at <aaiataaintldotcom> (if in a sensitive area, please type “Restricted” in the subject line) or call 1-800-922-8438 / (803)-758-1400.</aaiataaintldotcom>

16) THE BACKPAGE: PARTNERING MOST WITH PRAYER PARTNERS — Today I’m wondering what you ask your prayer partners to pray for. Sometimes I hear missionaries poke fun at those who pray, “Lord bless the missionaries.” But in reality, don’t we have to accept some of the responsibility for our friends and loved ones not knowing how to pray? Some of our Team Expansion missionaries have long ago figured out that prayer covering can mean a *world* of difference. Others are still at the starting gate, wondering how to begin. How ’bout taking some of these idea-starter prayer requests and sending them to a select group of a dozen friends or so. Ask them to pray. Some will write back and say they will. Those could become your new prayer group! (These are written from “First person” point of view.)

When traveling…

*** That we will pass through customs and immigration lines without incident
*** That our planes will not encounter mechanical problems or trouble from terrorists
*** That we’ll make all our connections

Health and Safety

*** Protection from accidents, crime, natural disasters, terrorists, and dangerous animals
*** Protection from all kinds of sickness
*** That we’ll find time for proper sleep, rest, and exercise
*** That our food and water needs will be met by the Lord

Spiritual Watchcare

*** Good times of intimacy with Jesus in Bible, prayer and worship
*** Protection from dark forces in spiritual realms
*** Protection from discouragement, fear, and doubt
*** That we’ll demonstrate purity, humility, boldness, wisdom, patience, love for people, teachable spirit and the power of the Holy Spirit

Teamwork

*** That our team will experience and express unity, love, good communication, patience, and spiritual gifts
*** That we can resist temptation toward jealousy, envy, bitterness, and pride
*** That we’ll be granted grace for cultural adjustments, dealing with jet lag, being away from family and friends and lack of privacy.
*** That God will grant us wisdom to design and implement effective efforts that will make a long-term difference here . . . and that we’ll be able to establish and maintain a solid friendships with government officials and other leaders in this land.

Verses to Read as you Pray

*** Exodus 4:12; 33:14
*** Psalms 4:8, 19:14, 121:1-8
*** Isaiah 40:29-31; 55:10-11
*** Zechariah 4:6
*** Acts 1:8, 4:29,30
*** Ephesians 3:16-20; 6:10-20

(* Portions of the above prayer requests adapted from original prayers by Gail Seiver, as featured in _World Christian_, Vol. 14, Number 4.)

By the way… if you get a chance… 4 of us from Team Expansion are heading into Central Asia tomorrow. We’d actually really appreciate your prayers for us as we travel.

13) THE BACK PAGE: DEFINING LEADERSHIP

Our organization recently held its 3rd summit of team leaders and, as always, I learn more from this growing group of top-notch workers than I ever can possibly give back. Since our time together, I’ve been mulling over in my mind how to define leadership. I started out thinking about it in terms of activity. I figured leaders should be people who have somehow learned how to get things done… so maybe others rally around them because, well, these would-be teammates see the action and they want to be a part of it. Not only is it more *fun* to be a part of the action, but also it just feels more productive… more effective… more fruitful.

But then I started realizing that some great leaders didn’t really *do* things. They *are*. Gandhi is an example. He stood up for a set of *values*… so people ended up standing up for *him*. They were attracted by his ideas, rather than his actions. Sure he took steps that were visible… tangible… but in the end, it was more a matter of his *principles* than his *tasks*.

As my thinking continued to evolve, I moved on to a phase of focusing on great leaders and their *relationships*. In a way, that’s part of what defined success for Jesus. After all, he never wrote a book (directly) nor did he record any motivational tapes. If his teachings were going to last, it would be because of the notes made by those who followed him. And that’s exactly what happened. The Bible is *full* of eye witness testimony by those who loved him most. More than anything else, it seems, Jesus majored in spending time with *people* … his “teammates” (the disciples), needy folks, and even those who didn’t seem to *think* that they needed him.

So now I’ve come full circle. I’m beginning to conclude that great leaders maybe have all *three* facets. They learn how to get things done… they stand for noble principles… and they invest time in *people*. Part of the magic is… great leaders come to believe that those people are not “projects” but someone to love.

So… I think I’m starting to get it. And I’m further thinking that if we want to train our new disciples to be great leaders in their local churches, we’ve got to model it for them. We’ve got to churn out the work, retain those guiding principles, and love people. I’m starting to believe that only *then* will we really make great leaders.

What do you think? Got an opinion? Let me know at <dlucasatteamexpansiondotorg>.</dlucasatteamexpansiondotorg>

Thanks and may 2002 be a blessed one for you, your team, your family, and your ministry!

PAYPAL CAN BE FRUSTRATING

In last week’s _Brigada Today_, we asked for feedback on PayPal (Item 1, “CAUTION: RUMBLES ABOUT PAYPAL”). We received about 10 responses — not many, from nearly 10,000 readers. One reader responded, “I run a small business in the US, and use Paypal regularly. I send/receive well over $50,000 per month, and am VERY happy with the system. It’s quite reliable, and I’ve had little or no problems.” But do read http://www.paypalwarning.com/ for the kind of thing that can happen. One email said that the PayPal VeriSign certificate expired in July 2001. That’s probably not a positive thing. :-) Losses ranged, for some, up into the thousands of dollars. One Brigada participant responded in what was probably a very fair assessment: “I’ve had several complaints with paypal, but I also have had great success. Their response is slow, but they DO respond eventually. And they’ve resolved every issue I’ve had to my satisfaction. I get about 20-30 transactions per day, and have been very happy with it.. Just like credit card systems, there are problems.. But Paypal does a pretty good job of resolving the majority of them.” One thing is for sure — several users reminded us that it’s crazy to try to use PayPal from an overseas location where they don’t do business. (They lock up your account the moment they find out where you’re located.) The bottom line of the whole study is probably this: Keep your PayPal balance low, use PayPal only from areas where they have a presence, and be watchful of every transaction. And … I guess to be on the safe side, if you have any other possible way to do the business you have to do, consider it again. It does indeed appear that Paypal is beginning to show some cracks. Rats. Why is it that the really cool ideas that are also cheap end up being short-lived. What does that tell us about “cheap”? :-) (Thanks to those who responded!)

VIRUSES EVERYWHERE

I’m getting, on average, 10 virus-laden emails per *day* now. It’s definitely a new day for email. I know you don’t need me to tell you this, but get Norton Antivirus 2002. It updates its own data files automatically, every time you’re on line. The day that gone.scr came out, it not only updated virus data files, it installed new filtering process software on my machine and asked me to reboot… all automatically, without me thinking about it. It not only spots viruses and worms coming *in*, but it also keeps them from going *out*. In other words, even if a Melissa-type virus-trojan-worm *does* sneak by, when it starts to send emails to everyone in your address book, Norton intercepts and stops the behavior. So it nips the *spreading* in the bud. This one simple $30 purchase would, single-handedly, make the Internet an incredibly safer place. Get it at your local computer store or at http://www.symantec.com . You don’t need the bigger “System Works”… just the Antivirus software will do. Watch carefully for all the little checkboxes if you use their site. You probably don’t need any mailings whatsoever… nor do you need any additional products to do the job.

NETWORK SOLUTIONS FORGETS

Tony at <tonyatsoondotorgdotuk> wrote this past week, “If you have a domain registered with Network Solutions, it is reported that allegedly they have not been always sending reminders to domain holders to request renewal payments. Result – lost domain. And there is a po*n company which buys up non-renewed domains of any sort, if they think there will be plenty of inbound links. Go to: </tonyatsoondotorgdotuk>

http://www.netsol.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois

and check your renewal date and make a note of it. And note that there are many cheaper domain registrars, and it is easy to transfer to them. (But choose one that others recommend to you as reliable.) And if you have a domain you no longer want, don’t let it lapse, try selling it or passing it on.” (Great input, Tony!) THE BACK PAGE: RESPONSIBLE EMAILING

Lately, I’ve been noticing that, with the increased volume of email that seemingly everyone is getting these days, I’m more and more appreciating those who can be lovingly concise. :-) So here’s a Christmas wish list — that we would get rid of these 4 “most unwanted” email characteristics:

*** Attachments: In short, lose them. Those which end in .pif, .scr, .vbs, and .exe can ruin our hard drives. And Office extensions can contain macro viruses. If you *do* have to send an attachment, it’s polite to write first to ask permission to send it. And the recipient should have antivirus software.

*** Forwards: We never had to deal with this before the email generation, because nobody wanted to go pay for photocopies. Now it’s too easy to just keep hitting forward after forward after forward, and well-meaning friends leave all those carbon-copied addresses attached. Yikes. When will we learn to in-quote only what is needed. Honestly, I know *many* people who now don’t even download forwarded emails from their POP3 server.

*** Hoaxes: Just when I think we’re starting to be able to recognize hoaxes, another round starts up. Get the Brigada “OPC” protocol so you can spot hoaxes and similar unwarranted emails.

*** Real virus-propagation: I just don’t get it. After Melissa and everything else that has come before and after, why in the world are we still clicking on those attachments!!!??? :-) And when we *do*, why don’t we have antivirus programs with up-to-date virus data definitions. Because then, all our friends have to deal with receiving the brunt of our sloppy computing. Yikes. If these issues were spilling out in the streets, the world would be a very ugly place. As it is, it’s just the information highway that’s getting clogged with wasted virus-worm-spam. If you *must* use Outlook, go to Microsoft’s site and download the fix. Turn off Windows Scripting Host. Engage macro protection in Office. Get Norton. Please. :-)

*** Subscribe/Unsubscribe requests: If you’re part of an automated email list (like Brigada Today), try to be a responsible list member. That means keeping track of how to subscribe and unsubscribe. Some ejournals even include reminders on how to do that… in every issue. Yet literally dozens of subscribers try to prevail upon list-compilers to do their housecleaning for them… to change addresses, or to unsubscribe. Many even become angry when they won’t help. So please… it’s the most basic of all Internet functions. Learn to use the unsubscribe commands of the lists to which you subscribe. Your editors & compilers will love you for it! :-)

Thanks to any and all who can help rid the world of these email problems! :-)

CAUTION: RUMBLES ABOUT PAYPAL

We’re beginning to hear it from more than one source. Though we haven’t personally experienced any problems with PayPal, we’re starting to wonder… have they extended themselves beyond what they’re able to manage? We’re currently in the process of verifying a couple of horror stories that we’ve heard out there in the Internet “jungle”. So… for now… be cautious and we’d suggest you not tie up a *lot* of money there in a standing balance. Apparently, there are some problems in the system. If you’ve got a PayPal horror story, please send it to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg with subject line PAYPAL FEEDBACK. Thanks.

WHERE DO YOU TURN FOR EVANGELISTIC COURSES?

Suppose you’re trying to share your faith with an Italian. You wish that there could be some kind of movie or outline in his or her heart language — Italian, in this case. Bob Mayhew’s legacy lives on. His memorial fund hasn’t attracted a *lot* of donors yet… but I guess it really only took two. One Brigada participant jumped right in and gave $10 in special tribute. We only received one other donation — but that one other donation basically covered the remainder of what we’ll owe for Brigada web-hosting fees and email services. What’s more, the donor wishes to remain anonymous. “Only for the glory of God,” he said. Goodness… as a tribute to Bob’s 6 years of quiet service… and for the glory of God… $500 will pay all of Brigada’s expenses for a year. (In case you’re curious, Brigada pays no salaries.) So thanks much to the sacrificial friend… and in Bob’s name, and God’s name, Happy Thanksgiving to the whole Brigada family.

20011125 Brigada Today

In this issue….

--------------------------------------

IN MEMORY OF BOB & PATTI MAYHEW, OUR WEB VOLUNTEERS

This past week saw the passing of a great couple for Christ, Bob & Patti Mayhew, both 52 years old. Bob had previously served as a professor at the University of California’s Riverside campus, where he was responsible for PC support for Academic Computing in the Computing & Communications department. Over the years, Bob had developed some *great* tools in Perl that gradually helped him transfer hundreds and hundreds of pages of Brigada issues into HTML language for the web. Patti was quite an artist in her own right. (The logo used for Brigada Today at brigada.org was her creation.) Their tragic deaths this past week, within minutes of one another, signals a great loss for the entire Brigada family. Here was a duo who worked without pay since August 18, 1995 (ever since Brigada participant Paul Lay had recommended them to the job — Thanks Paul)! Here was a married couple totally sold out to missions. Bob had entertained long-term visions of serving some Islamic community in a future era of his life. On behalf of the entire Brigada family, we’ve sent flowers to the memorial service taking place on this very day, Nov. 30th, at a church in Riverside, CA. On an enclosed card, we wrote a message thanking Bob & Patti’s 2 surviving (adult) children for their parents’ incredible and selfless service record, signed by the “Nearly 10,000 members of the Brigada online family.”
--------------------------------------

IN HONOR OF BOB & PATTI, THE MAYHEW MEMORIAL FUND

In honor of Bob & Patti, Team Expansion has set up a special trust — the Mayhew Memorial Fund — with the proceeds to be used to specifically underwrite the expenses of the Brigada website and email network. (Team Expansion is a non-profit, 501(c)3 incorporation, so for those in the USA, contributions are tax-deductible.) At Bob’s request, we had always kept it a secret that Bob had funded most of Brigada’s expenses since about 1998. He never wanted any attention. In fact, in most cases, he refused to even publicize or even mention his own name on the website. So it seems somehow fitting that a gift in his name would continue the legacy for which he invested so much of himself, his time, and his treasure. Contributions in Bob & Patti’s name can be sent to: Mayhew Memorial Fund, 3700 Hopewell Rd., Louisville, KY 40299. Please make the check payable to Team Expansion and write “Mayhew Memorial Fund” in the memo line. A tax-deductible receipt will be sent to USA donors and all others will be sent a thank-you note via email (please don’t forget to provide yours). Those wishing to use the web can go to
http://www.brigada.org/sponsor.html and click on the “Donate” link at the bottom of the page to make a donation using a credit card or from a PayPal account. (If for some reason the Brigada site drops out during this transitional period, you could also use the “Donate” link at:
http://www.teamexpansion.org , on the righthand side of the page.)
Please be sure to mention in the “Special Instructions” box that the gift is for the Mayhew Memorial Fund. In addition, please make a note regarding how you’d like your name to be shown on the sponsors page. If you’d like the gift to be anonymous, just mark it as such. Note that it might take us a while to figure out Bob’s system to update everything. Thanks for your patience as we get it going again. Thanks in advance to any who feel led to contribute.

BRIGADA WEBSITE RUNNING SILENTLY, WITHOUT ITS HELMSMAN

So, if I can speak candidly for a moment, it’s kind of strange today for me to visit www.brigada.org . Really, truth be known, that’s Bob’s site, not Brigada’s. It’s hard for me to put into words what I feel as I click there… the way the web pages still obediently pop up, one after another, running silently, just as if Bob is somehow in the background, serving them personally. To me, it’s almost haunting. It probably sounds corny, but I can’t help but think of some kind of old mystery movie, where the wheel of an old ship has been tied, with the sails set so the bow heads into the wind. The helmsman is missing, having deserted his post for the time being. But the ship sails on into the dark. Those hundreds and hundreds of files, representing hundreds and hundreds of late nights, stand today as his legacy. May God bless his grown daughter, son-in-law, and son. May He raise up others like Bob & Patti for the challenges of tomorrow… and may Bob’s name ever be remembered as synonymous with selfless servanthood and extreme endurance.

Our tribute today isn’t just to Bob & Patti, it’s to all those like the Mayhews, who serve daily in silent ministry for the good of the Kingdom, in hopes that unreached peoples everywhere can one day know Christ as King! To all those servants, we offer thanks . . . and hopes for God’s richest blessings. …

SOME ARE RECEIVING 10 INFECTED EMAILS PER DAY

And I’m one of them. Believe it or not, there are some who are receiving literally 10 infected emails per day these days (i.e., over the past week). Most are due to incredibly virulent forms of w32dotbadtransdotbatmmdothtml . Read the full security alert on this one at:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ (click on the “Security Alert” for the badtrans virus). How does one avoid getting badtrans? You guessed it: Don’t click on the file attachment, make sure your virus definitions are up to date, and finally, make sure you’ve disabled Outlook’s tendency to automatically execute macros and visual basic scripts. The trojan worm attachment will typically have file names that look like:
CARD.Doc.pif or NEWS_DOC.mp3.scr. But the virus (or more properly, the worm) randomly chooses these file names from a list including names like “PICS, IMAGES, README, New_Napster_Site, NEWS_DOC, HAMSTER, YOU_ARE_FAT!, SEARCHURL, SETUP, CARD, ME_NUDE, Sorry_about_yesterday, S3MSONG, DOCS, HUMOR, and FUN.” The trick is… the final extension for the entire file name will *always* end in “pif” or “scr”. For the benefit of all your friends on the Net, *please* make sure your virus definitions are up to date and don’t click on any attachments ending in those extensions. Thanks!

IF YOU UPGRADE TO XP, TRY POWERTOYS

Over the years, many of us have come to appreciate “Powertoys”, a collection of helpful (but officially unsupported) programs from the hands of Microsoft employees to wring the most out of the Windows operating system. Now, if you’ve upgraded to Windows XP, there’s a new set of powertoys to help. Check ’em out at:

GOT CREATIVE FINANCIAL STRATEGY EXAMPLES?

Don in Colorado Springs is doing some research for a project dealing with creative strategic use of finances for kingdom work. If you know of any great examples of how people are defying the cultural norm of spending their resources on themselves and freeing up those finances for missions, please pass them along! Of particular interest would be people who have learned to live off 50% or less of their income, channeling the other 50% or more towards unreached peoples, OR people who have strategically invested for the express purpose of using the extra income for missions. In one example, two families decided to live together in a large house, sharing expenses, and freeing up thousands per year which they channeled towards the kingdom. If you know of other examples, please pass them to Don at <niemyerataoldotcom>. Once his report is completed he’ll send it in and we’ll make it available for all of us via an autoresponder.

OUT OF MORMONISM: A WOMAN’S TRUE STORY

Honest and eye-opening, OUT OF MORMONISM takes readers where few will ever see–behind the doors of the Mormon church and into the lives of a family seeking to leave. Part apologetic and part autobiography, the book begins with an explanation of how author Judy Robertson and her family were drawn into Mormonism, how they were constantly lived a life that never quite measured up even though they were “temple-worthy Mormons,” and how they finally found their freedom. OUT OF MORMONISM also compares Mormon beliefs with biblical truths. A great resource for those participating in the Salt Lake City Olympic Outreach in February 2002. Plus you can now get special rates for ministries! For orders: 1-800-328-6109 (int’l: 1-952-829-2500) or email <csatbethanyhousedotcom> More information at http://www.BethanyHouse.com .

OPPORTUNITIES TO MINISTER TO MUSLIMS

Have the events of Sept. 11th put to an end any hopes of service in the Muslim world? Not on your life. For example, listen to Jeff, from Mission to Unreached Peoples: “Yes – we have numerous teaching opportunities (even invitations!) to serve the Lord in Muslim countries. Some positions have stipends, as well as additional financial help for housing and transportation.” Certainly the world situation compels us to be all the more vigilant in caring for the personal safety of our family and friends. But does that mean doors are closing. Quite the contrary. Listen again to Jeff, describing at the very least, mission opportunities that he’s trying to fill: “All you need to be an effective tool for the Lord is to have a heart for missions, a degree of any kind, and be a native English speaker. You will be blessed and you will be a blessing. The Lord can use you!” For more information, contact Jeff mupinfoatmupdotorg  (mupinfoatmupdotorg)   in the USA or via Net2Phone at 888-847-6950 or 206-781-3151 or check out http://www.mup.org.

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. See the note above if you’d like to submit items for Brigada Today. Thanks for understanding. Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.

UPDATE ON HUMANITARIAN WORKERS IN AFGHANISTAN

Several have asked about the Shelter Now folks in Afghanistan. Apparently, their lawyer visited Kabul yesterday, but was not able to see the judge, or even speak with him. A man with the protocol department reportedly told the lawyer that everyone in the court was busy, and now not concerned with the case. In addition, these 8 friends have also been moved to a different location, described more “like a dungeon”. If you haven’t already prayed for these folks, now would be a good time.

MISSION TO MUSLIMS IN MOSQUE DESPITE CURRENT CRISIS

How do they do that? The answer is ‘Through Meetings for Better Understanding.’ (MBU) And it works! The pioneer of the method, a Egyptian Christian, says that several Muslims have become Christians through those gatherings. They can take place alternatively in a mosque, church, or a small group. A day after the bombs started falling on Afghanistan a previously planned MBU on the subject of war took place peacefully in a mosque in the UK. A Muslim and a Christian leader spoke for 30 minutes each on what their books say regarding the subject. This was followed by 30 minutes question time. MBU’s are not debates where each others faiths are publicly attacked. Neither are they dialogues with the goal to compromise the message. Each side simply presents its view on theological and social topics. Of course, the Christians have a tremendous advantage because the word of God is sharper than a two edged sword…(Heb. 4:12) In the time of fellowship that follows relationships are built and so the witness goes on and on. For more information and practical help on how to set up those meetings in your area contact administratoratbiblicalchristianitydotfreeservedotcodotuk  (administratoratbiblicalchristianitydotfreeservedotcodotuk)  . Their web site, http://www.biblicalchristianity.freeserve.co.uk offers helpful articles on explaining the Gospel to Muslims and those of other faiths.

FINALLY CAUGHT UP

Brigada Logo Can you believe it… finally caught up to date on Brigada Today! It’s about time! Lately, it’s been “Brigada last week“! Please forgive the “batch processing” for these last few editions. We’ll try to avoid it … but, among other things, I’ve been overseas leading a prayer journey with my family and . . . well . . . a guy can only do so much, right? I’ll try harder.

A WEALTH OF LEAST REACHED PEOPLES DATA

The first phase of the Joshua Project II website is open for business. The Joshua Project II team is a group of four former AD2000 and Beyond staff who are committed to “highlighting the least reached peoples of the world through information sharing and networking.” Following are some items currently accessible at: http://www.joshuaproject.net.
--------------------------------------

READ GENERAL LEAST REACHED PEOPLES INFORMATION

Read an overview of the Joshua Project II initiative. Read an article explaining why there are various total people group counts. Compare the various peoples lists and see a timeline of their development. Register your least reached peoples ministry activity / commitment.
--------------------------------------

SEE THE ORIGINAL JOSHUA PROJECT LIST

View the current status of the original Joshua Project list. View or download various segments of the original Joshua Project data. View people profiles from the original Joshua Project list.
--------------------------------------

DIGEST THE NEW JOSHUA PROJECT II ALL PEOPLES LIST

Download a comprehensive list of all 16,300 peoples by country. View people group lists for every country of the world. Participate in the Joshua Project II global survey. Discover interesting facts about people groups. For example, which relatively small country has over 900 people groups and which major country has only 7 people groups? Download the complete Joshua Project II Peoples information set.
--------------------------------------

THE NEXT PHASE OF THE JOSHUA PROJECT II WEBSITE

In the near future, the JP II team will work hard at…

  1. Making the data in the downloadable files available interactively on- line. This will allow, for example, a country can be selected and all the peoples in that country will be displayed. Then selecting a people, a people profile will be displayed including non-sensitive work-among information.

  2. An on-line more automated survey mechanism.

  3. A location to log your mission activity by linking your mission organization / church / denomination with a particular people group. This will be a web-based database, eventually with pre-made and user- defined queries allowing datasets such as the top 25 least reached groups, the 20 peoples most needing adoption, the largest groups without the Scriptures.

Thanks loads to Dan and the others at JP II. This could end up making a very significant contribution to the Cause. (Thanks, too, for those helping them make a go at this… like Caleb Project!!! Yahooo!) yahoo

WHERE DOES ONE LEARN SPANISH ONLINE?

Jed jedsnyderatrcndotcom  (jedsnyderatrcndotcom)   is trying to find a way to learn Spanish over the internet — relatively quickly. Of course, the ideal is learning on-site, but that having been said, let’s help the guy at least get a head start. In fact, maybe it’s time we did an autoresponder on all tools for learning other languages. We could toss in tape sets from Berlitz, Sybervision (or Intelliquest — they’re available toll-free in the USA or via Net2phone at 800-275-6940), as well as CD resources like Rosetta Stone and others. Would you send all your best sites and sources to Jed and he’ll compile the list for us and we’ll post it here in an autoresponder in a couple of weeks. Thanks Jed!

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR WALLET IS STOLEN

Traveling overseas seems to “up the odds” that you’ll be pick-pocketed. What do you do if your wallet is stolen? As everyone always advises, cancel your credit cards immediately. To do that, you’ll need all those toll free numbers and your card numbers. So write them down somewhere in advance — and not just in your wallet, silly. :-) File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where it was stolen, so you can prove to credit providers that you were diligent. If you’re from the USA, call (or have someone in the USA call) the three national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and SS# — to keep your credit clean. The numbers for the credit bureaus are: Equifax 800-525-6285; Experian (formerly TRW) 888-397-3742; Trans Union 800-680-7289. Again, if you’re from the USA, you might also call the Social Security Administration at 800-269-0271. (Thanks Alan!)

THE BACKPAGE – SILENT SPRING: WHERE HAS ALL THE HOOPLA GONE?

books and pen Is it just my imagination, or is the silence beginning to roar? Maybe I’m not as “plugged in” as I need to be. (That’s hard to imagine with the quantity of emails I receive.) Maybe this is just a “lull” before more storms. Either way, it just doesn’t seem that there is as much mobilization for missions going on these days. Where are the big prayer pushes, … the big promotions, … the new books on unreached peoples. Yes… there’s an occasional CD, and… Operation World is coming… but for now,… if I’m not mistaken, we seem to be in a strange kind of muted silence, don’t we? Maybe that’s okay. Maybe 1995 – 2000 was actually too much glitz and glamour. Maybe the better part of valor is the discretion of pulling together new mission teams through patient and intentional step-by-step efforts. Time will tell. As for our own mission, I’ll have to admit — we have the biggest response ever to our summer internship program (80 summer interns compared to a previous “high” of 50 or so annually since 1984). So … I shouldn’t complain. Still… it’s silent enough to make me wonder… Was it just the new millennium… or did we just experience a ripple in the mobilization sine wave?

What’s happening where you sit? Send us your opinion. Write DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg  (DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg)   — with subject line: ” SILENT SPRING

YAHOO TO OFFER PORNOGRAPHIC MATERIALS – THEN MAYBE NOT

WebWatch If you’re a regular participant in a YahooGroup (formerly eGroups) then maybe you’ve caught wind of the rumor that the service’s management recently decided to offer pornographic materials in a larger, more visible “company-sponsored” way. (To see the original release, have a look at: http://foxnews.com/story/0,2933,5537,00.html ) However, after receiving numerous complaints from customers after revelations that the company had already been peddling x-rated materials anyway, Yahoo announced about a week later that it will no longer be selling pornographic videos period. “We consistently strive to act responsibly and constantly evaluate our policies based on what our users tell us,” said Yahoo president and chief operating officer Jeff Mallet. He added that the company will no longer sell banner ads to the pornography industry. (Source: CNSNews.com — thanks for the tip, Kirk!) Want an alternative to the whole situation? Try out StrategicNetwork.org’s new email conferencing software at: www.strategicnetwork.org It’s free . . . and becoming more powerful all the time. And what’s more, it’s run by Christians for global Christian purposes. So you know the management… (or at least we here at Brigada Today do!). Will Brigada Today switch over? Well… it’s always a possibility… but for now, we’re thrilled that YahooGroups took a stand. So… for the time being, we intend to ride the wave of good will following a decision for the good!

In this issue….

--------------------------------------

HOW MANY SUBSCRIBERS THESE DAYS?

Brigada Logo When EGroups transitioned to Yahoo groups, the code-writers polished up the servers and tightened up the reporting a bit. Turns out we have somewhere above 9,000 subscribers… but not quite 10,000. That’s okay. Nobody gets paid per subscriber. :-)
--------------------------------------

DOES EGROUPS (YAHOO) PAY BRIGADA?

Brigada Logo Nope. Originally, they talked about it… back at the beginning. Seems like we got 3 checks, each averaging around $25…. spread out over the first 12 months. By that time, they had become convinced that their model would never work… and that was the end of that. Now we pay about $60/year to make sure there aren’t any of those crusty “ad trailers” on the ends of these emails. So… [yawn] nobody’s getting rich from Egroups… that’s for sure. :-)
--------------------------------------

DOES BRIGADA RECEIVE ADVERTISING DOLLARS FROM RESOURCE PROVIDERS?

Brigada Logo About 2 or 3 times/year, some enterprising business will say, “Do you guys accept sponsorship dollars?” (The answer is always a resounding “Yes!” :-) ) We place their information prominently on the web site: http://www.brigada.org and feature them in a big headline in the next couple of issues. But we never “charge” the people who list resources in Brigada Today. If someone decides to donate, they give from the heart. Then we pay bills. Like for instance, this past Christmas, we sent nice gift certificates from Circuit City to our web volunteer and customer service volunteers. (In case anyone ever asks you, there’s a “Donate” button at the website that allows folks to give by check or credit card, if they can join PayPal, or, if anyone ever receives an inheritance :-), our address is:

FREE RADIO SCRIPTS FOR CHRONOLOGICAL BIBLE STORYING, NOW ONLINE

Log onto the brand new Strategy Network website just uploaded on http://www.newWway.org for 100 free radio scripts suitable for North Africa and Middle Eastern Teams. The series called “The Way of Righteousness: The Stories and Message of God’s Prophets According to the Torah, the Psalms and the Gospel” may be something your team would want to translate into your target language. The scripts are at http://www.newwway.org. Once you’re there, paste this additional text into the URL address box in your browser (in other words, add this onto the end of the http://www.newwway.org address:
/strategy_network/storying_resources/sub8/index.html
(If we listed the entire link, it would line-wrap and that always results in a ton of emails saying the link is bad. It’s not bad… but it does require “assembly” since it’s so long.) (Thanks Chris!)

GREAT SLANT ON PRAYER JOURNEYS

praying hands Here’s a church in Cincinnati, Ohio (Clovernook Christian) that has taken a slightly different tack on prayer journeys. They’re asking participants to make a commitment to pray after the prayer journey, on a regular basis, for a minimum of six or twelve months. Great idea! Seems like we should all be implementing that!

THE BACKPAGE: MORE ON HOW GOOD TEAMS BECOME GREAT TEAMS

books and penLast week we wrote that good teams become great teams when they have these three starter components:

  1. A clear sense of purpose
  2. Motivated team members
  3. Determination

This week we expand the list with 1 more item. Again, most of this stuff is just common sense, but I’ll admit that it comes from having watched 20 years worth of teams in formation. Good teams become great teams when they have…

d. Gifted team members — You thought I’d forget this, didn’t you. But it’s true. As much as we’d like to think that story-book champions come from dreams and passion, the truth is that most championships are won by teams with athletes who are incredibly talented. Look at the way a guy like Pele can seemingly lift a nation to international fame. Born to poor parents, here’s a guy who learned to play soccer by wrapping up his brother’s underwear into little balls! Later, he’d practice with grapefruits and oranges. But all you have to do is watch him chest a ball down to his feet, then shoot it first touch — and then you appreciate the fact that this guy has more natural ability in his big toe than most of us do in our whole bodies! You’re heard the phrase that “winning is 80% motivation.” I believe it. But that other 20% can sure make a difference sometimes. So on our mission teams, we need people who can really share Christ effectively. We need sharp leaders with grace-filled pastoral care gifts. We don’t just want average language guys. We want incredible language speakers. The kind where the words roll off his or her tongue.

I love listening to one guy in our mission who has an IQ off the scoreboard. I’m convinced he could have done anything he set his mind to. I found him (okay… so maybe God found him :-) ) on the campus of a Midwestern Bible College about 10 or 12 years ago. I had gone to the Academic Dean and asked, “Would you write down the name of your best preacher, your most gifted learner, and the most promising student in the college.” He said, “That’s easy — it’s one guy, with all three titles.” The next morning I ate breakfast with that fellow. Probably one of the best breakfasts I ever had… and I don’t even remember what I ate! :-) But that one morning changed our lives… both of our lives! He joined our organization and we’ve never been the same since. His Chinese is so good, nationals have told me it sounds like he was native born. Sometimes they close their eyes and they forget that he’s not Chinese. Once I dared him to be ready for the fall of “the bamboo curtain”… to train Chinese leaders all the more into the very best leaders they can be. Thing is… he isn’t waiting for any curtains to fall. With God’s power, he and his beautiful wife are walking right through them.

Now… when are they going to get around to inventing DNA cloning for humans. Who needs extra sheep! :-)

Seriously — how do we find those kind of guys? Seems to me that today’s missions enterprise depends on us finding the Simon Peters and Andrews (and the guy in the Midwestern college) and all the others who will make a difference. Then we’ll have great teams. Then we’ll see the harvest God promised. Then we’ll see churches pop up like mushrooms around the earth.

Give me a team full of gifted team members and I’ll show you a great team — as long as some other issues are in place. More about those next week. :-)

EASY-ENGLISH NEW TESTAMENT

Bible SOON Gospel Literature has the copyright to a very easy-English New Testament. It can be viewed online at http://bible.gospelcom.net (version ‘WE’). SOON does not distribute it commercially, but prints it primarily for use in its own ministry. Its leaders are willing to collaborate with any ministry which wishes to use part or all of the text for scripture distribution, or as part of any other material. They are also considering the addition of a brief overview of the Old Testament to future issues. Can anyone recommend existing short material which explains God’s dealings with man in the Old Testament, and is designed for a (non-Western) reader who knows nothing of the Bible? If so, write Tony tonyatsoondotorgdotuk  (tonyatsoondotorgdotuk)  .

DO YOU KNOW A GOOD, SIMPLE LIBRARY CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM?

Mark luvhaitiatbellsouthdotnet  (luvhaitiatbellsouthdotnet)   is a missionary church planter, and is wanting to classify his personal library. He’s not fond of the Dewey system or the Library of Congress classification scheme. Do you know of a simple & helpful classification system to suggest to him (preferably one that will work for books, audios, videos, etc.)? Extensive Internet searching has proven nearly fruitless. PLEASE NOTE: He is not desiring help in managing or cataloging a book collection (much software of that nature is available), but rather a system to use for numbering or classifying items. Please e-mail Mark with your suggestions, and he will let us all know if an answer is found.

THE BACKPAGE: HOW GOOD TEAMS BECOME GREAT TEAMS

books and pen There’s a lot of talk these days about working in teams. Those blessed with the opportunity to serve on great teams are quick to tell you that they love their job. But how do those teams become great? I’m becoming more and more convinced that good teams don’t become great teams by accident. It’s an intentional process . . . and it involves dozens of variables. Gleaned from 20 years of experience watching our own mission teams grow around the globe, here’s the beginning of a short list on some ideas for turning good teams into great teams.

Great teams have…

  1. A clear sense of purpose — Nothing can ‘deep six’ a team faster than floundering in the swamp of wondering why they exist. Write your purpose down. Frame it. Talk about it. Re-read it regularly. Make sure new team members understand it before they even seek membership.

  2. Motivated team members — Okay. This one’s obvious. But think about the difference it makes to just put a basketball great like Michael Jordan onto a court. I’ve been reading a book about Jordan (“For the Love of the Game” — highly recommended for sports fans) and it’s impossible to miss his passion for the sport. Apparently most professional b’ball players in the NBA have provisions which restrict their play during the off-season. Team owners don’t want their prize players getting injured and hurting their winnings the following season. When Jordan came to the Chicago Bulls in 1984, he evidently lobbied long and hard until he achieved what few other players have negotiated: a “Love Of The Game Clause”. Basically Jordan said he loved basketball so much that he couldn’t imagine walking through a summer without it. Bravo for him. It’s about time we respect people because they have a passion for something rather than because they got rich off of it. Likewise, we need missionaries who can’t wait to get up in the morning. They might not really enjoy language learning drills, but their passion for Christ and their devotion to the Lord compel them to study. In short, they need “Love of the Lord Clauses”. … and maybe “Love of the People Clauses” too!

  3. Determination — My 14-year-old son loves soccer. So do dozens of other boys his age. But, if I may say so, something seems to separate him from other boys, especially in the final half of a match. While other players seem to grow more and more weary, especially if they’re behind on the scoreboard, Chris seems to almost play harder as each minute passes. He just won’t quit. He can be 3 goals down… but he just won’t stop trying to come out on top.

These last few days I’ve been meeting with our two full-time teams in Taiwan. The team leader I’m with on this particular day readily admits that he and his wife worked here for 7 years without a single response. Talk about 7 years of famine. Imagine… 7 years without a single success story to write home about. But they didn’t give up. By the 10th year there were a handful . . . and now in the 15 year a church is rising up. Over 100 believers celebrate on Sunday mornings… and cell groups are being birthed all over this bustling city. It’s harvest time.

Good teams rarely become great teams… but when they do, they seldom reach greatness without a clear sense of purpose, motivated team members, and determination. My challenge to all of us is to seek after those attributes in the teams upon which we labor. [more next week]

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us!

Thank you.
