  1. EUROTRAIN: INNOVATIVE YOUNG LEADER TRAINING — Top Flight Leadership is taking nominations for EuroTrain 2003. EuroTrain (for leaders age 15-25) is a completely unique experience, and an answer to the new paradigms needed to develop new generations of leaders. In July 2003, EuroTrain groups will travel through five nations in Europe learning leadership, developing ministry skills, getting a grasp of their destiny, building key relationships, and creating a plan for long-term personal and leadership growth. Get the details and nominate a young leader (or request to be nominated) at http://www.experiencingleadership.com or contact Top Flight Leadership at <eurotrainattopflightdotorg>, 877-9-LEADER, or 817-447-1100. </eurotrainattopflightdotorg>

  2. MICROFINANCE AS MISSION IN THAILAND — Step Ahead Microenterprise Development in Bangkok goes to the market everyday, in the love of God. They’re seeking to amalgamate microenterprise development, and mentoring, with personal and business development training in an integrated service among the poor of Thailand. They serve in the slums of Bangkok daily, to empower and love those who make their living doing everything from sewing dresses, and roasting chicken, to making noodle soup. Step Ahead’s innovative member training module, draws from Stephen Covey’s best-seller, “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and explores the life of Joseph as a model of proactivity. This unorthodox ministry approach accepts the slum-dwelling poor as business partners, and sets out to help them achieve comprehensive transformation in their lives, families, and communities. To learn more, check out the web site. http://www.stepaheadmed.org

  3. MISSIONS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM — The Acts 13 Initiative in Manila, Philippines will host an eight-week missions experience for college- aged youth, June 2 – July 26, 2003. The experience will include intense participant discipleship and outreach opportunities. The cost, $2,000 US, includes room, board, training materials, local transportation, and outreach costs. For more information and to apply, please check them out online at http://www.acts13.tv .

  4. HOW DO YOU WIRE YOUR FUNDS? — International Christian Ministries works in a number of countries in Africa but needs to know the safest and cheapest way to get money to countries like Nigeria on a regular basis. Pay Pal does not work there! Got ideas? Send them to Greg <kenya96ataoldotcom> or call him at 661-832-9740 in the USA. He’ll prepare a summary report of all the possibilities for a future issue of Brigada Today. </kenya96ataoldotcom>

  5. SHORT-TERM INTERNATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE — Usually short-term insurance excludes coverage for pre-existing conditions. Now a company is providing limited pre-ex coverage for medical care received outside the USA and Canada. Also included: $100,000 medical evacuation, hospital room and board, intensive care, outpatient medical, emergency dental, trip interruption, AD&D, and lost luggage coverage. Five deductible options. One can apply (and also renew monthly) via web at http://www.overseashealthinsurance.com . For information contact: jeffatgninsurancedotcom or call 480/813-9100; Toll free in USA: 866/636- 9100. For other options and more info., also http://www.gninsurance.com.

  6. SEARCH IN OTHER LANGUAGES — Did you ever notice that Google searches in other languages? Just click on ‘Advanced Search’ and select a language from the pull-down window on the ‘Language’ line reading ‘Return pages written in’ (Also, selecting ‘Language Tools’ instead of Advanced Search allows you to limit the pages returned to those located in a specified country. (Thanks for the reminder, Chuck!)

  7. YOUR SOURCE FOR BIBLES IN OTHER LANGUAGES — If you ever find yourself searching for Bibles or Jesus videos in another language, check out Multi-Language Media Inc, PO Box 301, Ephrata PA 17522 (tel. 717-738-0582). Visit their website at: http://www.multilanguage.com .

  8. ANOTHER IDEA TO KEEP YOUR PC VIRUS-FREE — I sure heard it this past week. A ton of MAC users wrote to say, “Hey… we *never* see any viruses.” :-) (See item #8, “SIMPLE SECURITY STEPS”, from the Dec. 6th Brigada Today.) By the way, if you’re a missionary having trouble finding parts for your MAC, try http://www.ibookparts.com They support all Apple laptops, and do pretty steep discounting for missionaries needing support. What’s more, they ship worldwide, and can supply parts (such as LCD’s, Hard drives, and CDROM/CDRW drives) for most laptops.

  9. URGENTLY NEEDED – EXAMPLES OF INNOVATIVE MISSION — Seedbed is a network of missionaries and missiologists who are actively promoting and nurturing the development on new models of mission for the 21st Century. They are very keen to make contact with people of all nationalities who are attempting innovative missionary projects so as to locate examples of effective innovation that can be held up as models for other mission workers who are looking for creative ideas. They also want to locate mission theorists who are researching emerging models of mission. If you are involved in innovative mission, or are doing research in a related field, please contact Seedbed at http://www.seedbed.info or email the Seedbed Coordinator Peter Stephenson <peteratseedbeddotinfo> </peteratseedbeddotinfo>

  1. LEARN TESL IN CHINA — Learn to Teach English by taking a TESOL course in Shanghai China. The course is both academic and practical in content and will prepare you to be a professional teacher of English. The course has a two week practicum which gives you the opportunity to put into practice what you have learned in the course. The practicum is critical to any TESOL course. Course dates are Feb. 14-March 28, 2003 and July 4-August 15, 2003. Go to http://www.tesoltraining.com for more information on the school. The application, reference letters and application fee are due by January 1, 2003.

  2. DENTAL TRAINING FOR MISSIONARIES! — Learn a great skill in which you can demonstrate the love of Christ in a practical way. Dental decay and gingivitis are the most common diseases in the world. Millions suffer needlessly. In just seven intense days, Dentistry For Missions can train and equip you to bring greatly needed dental care to your community. Cost: $975 (Includes lodging, books, $300 kit). 3. MEDICAL MISSIONS TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES — Thanks to Tina, who passed along a great resource for Medical Missions. Dr. Dan Fountain, one of the leading voices in medical missions, is involved with King College and providing some great courses. In January he is offering one on Short Term Medical Missions. The subscription only hardcopy circulation is 5900 and growing. Each issue contains tentmaker stories, articles on tentmaking and missions, a country profile, and is sure to stimulate your missions thinking. Log on at… http://www.globalopps.org

  5. LIFE TIME MISSION OPPORTUNITIES AT HOME AND ABROAD — John wrote this past week to exhort us to try to lift up *lifetime* missions commitments, as opposed to short-terms only. He wrote, “When Isaiah saw the Lord ‘high and lifted up’ (Isaiah 6) he saw the eternal King, holy, righteous and glorious and he was devastated by this wonderful/scary spectacle. He was able to hear and respond to the clear word from God “Whom shall I send? And Who will go for Us?” Isaiah didn’t say “I will have to pray about it.” He didn’t ask “Where?” or “To whom” He didn’t ask “For how long?” He didn’t ask “How much will I get paid?” or “How much support will I have to raise?” Isaiah responded “Here am I! Send me.” God said “Go and tell this people.” Isaiah let God take over every aspect of his life. A true salvation experience, after hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, doesn’t come from a response of: ‘It sounds like a good idea, I will give it a try and see how it works out.’ A conviction of sin comes from an encounter with the same God who confronted Isaiah, giving the same helpless, Hell-bound feeling. Repentance of sin brings forgiveness and forgiveness opens you to the opportunity to hear the same (continuing) word from God “Whom shall I send? And Who will go for Us?” What are YOU going to say? God wants YOUR LIFE and He knows how to look after it better than you do!!” Thanks for your thoughts, John <cwmbcattelusdotnet>! </cwmbcattelusdotnet>

  6. TESOL SCHOOL IN HAWAII — The next TESOL Course (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) will be held at the University of the Nations in Kona Hawaii beginning Feb. 17th, 2003. This is a four week academic curriculum with a two-week practicum which gives you the opportunity to put into practice what you have learned in the course. The exact schedule is from Feb. 17th to Mar. 28th, 2003. For more information & application forms contact <admissionsatuofnkonadoted>. </admissionsatuofnkonadoted>

  7. PRAYING THROUGH THE ARABIAN PENINSULA (PTAP) — Believers and churches in the Arabian Peninsula are calling on believers and churches around the world to pray for at least one (1) year, especially in 2003, for this region. In order to learn more about this year, you may read the Dec. 6, 2002 “World Pulse” issue, visit http://www.pray-ap.info , or email <ptapatsrgincdotorg> . Translations of the PTAP booklet are underway in more than 10 languages, bookmarks, kid’s prayer kits, and videos are also available in some languages. The time has come to pray passionately and persistently for the Arabian Peninsula until there are church-planting movements all across the region. If you wish to subscribe to the weekly prayer updates on the web, you may sign on at http://lists.everybody.org/listinfo/ptap via email . 1. REPORT ON FILTERED ISP’S — Remember Chuck’s inquiry about filtered ISP’s that block access to offensive sites? He has finished his research and has assembled a *terrific* summary report. To see it live on the web, just log on to this Brigada edition, or click directly to: http://www.brigada.org/today/articles/filtered-isps.html or simply send an empty email to <filtered-ispsatbrigadadotorg  (filtered-ispsatbrigadadotorg)  > to obtain the 8K file.

  2. FINISHERS FORUM / ACMC NATIONAL CONFERENCE — These two organizations will have a single combined interwoven national conference this year in Atlanta, August 15-17, 2002. Early registration ends July 15. The Finishers Forum portion provides information, challenge and pathways for people to move into missions from their careers. The ACMC portion is jam packed with ideas and resources to assist churches toward excellence in missions. For full information or to order brochures, promotional and testimonial videos email <officeatfinishersdotorg> or visit http://www.finishers.org/events . </officeatfinishersdotorg>

  3. FOLLOW-UP FOR SOLAR-POWERED LAPTOPS — As a follow-on to our earlier item about solar-powered laptops, we thought we should point out that Faithe clarified that the devices mentioned in the item, “9) NEED POWER FOR THAT LAPTOP? TRY SOLAR!” (May 31st edition), are actually fairly low power. To recharge a laptop, one would probably need to link several units together. The wattage for a typical laptop runs about 35 watts. It would take over 15 of these things to power your laptop. Since that’s fairly expensive, Faithe found for us an alternative. For about $129-$450 you can get a portable 12V solar unit which will power a laptop. The price range depends on which laptop you have (how much energy it draws) and how much power you want from the solar system. See http://www.realgoods.com for more info. (Thanks Faithe!) I guess this is one case where we’ll for sure want to, ahem, ‘keep the Faithe’. :-)

  4. RETHINKING BIBLICAL WITNESS AMONG HINDUS — From September 6-8, 2002, the Rethinking Forum is sponsoring a conference on the Hindu- Christian interface from the perspective of the Rethinking Movement in Indian church history. You can hear scholarly papers on history, ministry, worship, and more. For more information contact <infoatrethinkingforumdotcom> or view the conference program and registration form online at http://www.rethinkingforum.com . Everyone is welcome! </infoatrethinkingforumdotcom>

  5. LEAD KOREAN LANGUAGE CAMPS — Mission to Unreached Peoples is looking for servant hearts to lead Korean Language Camps. Participants must be strong in their walk with the Lord so they can be good witnesses to students. Students and teachers will have opportunities to develop relationships outside of class time. Housing and food will be provided by the school. Koreans who speak English are desired, but not necessary. If you want to see the lost won in Mongolia, you’re perfect for this opportunity [I confirmed — “Mongolia” is correct]! Inquire now at Mission to Unreached Peoples! Contact Jeff at 1-888-847-6950 or (206) 781-3151 or check them out at http://www.mup.org or write <mupinfoatmupdotorg>. </mupinfoatmupdotorg>

  6. OPPORTUNITY IN ROMANIA — FCA missionaries in Romania are looking for willing men, women, and families to come serve the Romanian people. Recently five tons of gospel booklets were given for distribution. People in hospitals are waiting. As well as orphans, street people and those in jail. For more info., contact <steveharrietracicotatyahoodotcom> or log on to http://www.foca.org . </steveharrietracicotatyahoodotcom>

  7. LIFE INSURANCE FOR MISSIONARIES? — Do you know of any LIFE insurance providers who are willing to insure missionaries? The risks associated with places like Central Asia or the Middle East disqualify missionaries from coverage by most major insurers. If you know of any providers who offer policies to folks going to odd places, please let Brad <bstoopsatpactecdotnet> know. He’ll compile whatever resources he hears of and make the info available on Brigada Today. Please specify “Life Insurance Providers” as the subject header when writing. </bstoopsatpactecdotnet>
  8. Or if it’s easier, just click here  (bstoopsatpactecdotnet?subject=Life%20Insurance%20Providers)  !

  9. PREPARE FOR MINISTRY TO BUDDHISTS — The Asia Pacific Theological Seminary in Baguio City, Philippines is hodling its first annual Institute of Buddhist Studies October 28-December 6, 2002. Two 3-week modules will be offered this year. One module serves as an introduction to Buddhism and the history of the Christian mission to Buddhists. The second, taught by Alex Smith, veteran missionary to Thailand and OMF Northwest Regional Director, focuses on contextualizing the Gospel message for people with Buddhist backgrounds. Both undergraduate or graduate credit are available through APTS. For a pre-application form and more details email <alandotjohnsonatagmddotorg> or you can call Alan in the USA at 425-277-9931 or APTS in the Philippines at 63-74-442-2779. </alandotjohnsonatagmddotorg>

  10. ACTIONS AT THE 4TH TIE CONGRESS — The 4th Congress included the election of Dr. Danny Martin as the new International Director. His first order of business was commending and thanking the outgoing director, Mrs. Berit Helgoy Kloster, of Norway. Dr. Martin has proposed that TIE (an organization helping tentmakers) become a more service- oriented organization with it’s headquarters in Phuket, Thailand along with the Asia Center for World Missions. Ben Bester, former director and training specialist from South Africa’s Global Careers, has joined the Asia Center staff and will be responsible for TIE’s training information. TIE is planning to send out monthly news letters via email. If you are interested in receiving a copy notify <benjaminatasiacenterdotac> . The full story and list of resources in on the web: http:\\www.tieinfo.com . </benjaminatasiacenterdotac>

  1. WERE YOU ONE OF THE 100 ORDERS FOR WORLDVUE? — GMI tells us that within the 24 hours following the Brigada announcement, over 100 Brigada participants placed orders via fax, or email, or phone. Whew! Somebody’s wanting to do some big-time missions mobilization! :-) If you were one of those who placed an order, you already know that WorldVue is a Great Commission Map Collection containing over 500 maps and graphs in popular digital graphics formats. All the missions themes from GMI’s overhead transparency sets are included, plus political maps of each country and region. View them on screen, print them, or copy and paste them into your electronic documents. No royalty fees are required to use the images for most Christian ministry purposes. For Windows and Mac, WorldVue sells for $39.95, but for Brigada Today subscribers we have negotiated the special price of *$29.95* (plus shipping and tax) for orders placed for just 3 additional days… (through June 22 only). To order, go to http://www.gmi.org/brigada or contact Lorri at <infoatgmidotorg> or phone 719-531- 3599. </infoatgmidotorg>

  2. SEVENTY-TWO HOURS — That’s how long you’ve got. So… once again… if you want tons of maps and charts that you can turn around and paste into your Powerpoints, take up to 71 hours to decide — then in the last hour remaining, order WorldVue. There’s so much stuff on this CD that I’d venture a guess that you’d *have* to find at least one map you can use in your next PowerPoint… or … like I said last week… ask them for your money back. They’ll be glad to refund it. I think. ‘Course, I didn’t exactly *ask* them, but I bet they would. Probably. :-)

  3. NEED A TENTMAKING PROFESSION? — Try this one. Tell <garyatglobal-ddotbiz> about your interest and qualifications/vision. He’ll either coach you — and/or give you an idea to get you started. His best-selling idea lately? 3D imagery for ID, phone, bank cards. Sound far out? Probably. But try him. Maybe you’ll be selling 3D stuff 6 months from now and you’ll be able to give a tithe back to Brigada as a sponsor! :-) </garyatglobal-ddotbiz>

  4. A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR — Have you tried PayPal yet? Many are using it to effortlessly transfer money over the Internet. There have been times when the volume of users has forced PayPal to upgrade its services… but they seem to always catch up. Lately, we’ve noticed great speed on all transactions. PayPal lets users send and receive money online. PayPal charges the money to your credit card or bank account. It’s faster, safer and easier than mailing a check. Plus, assuming you qualify, as soon as you sign up and complete the bonus requirements, PayPal will automatically add $5 to your balance! What’s more, if you sign up using the link below, PayPal will also donate $5 in cash to Brigada! If you decide not to use PayPal, just transfer the $5 to your bank account and walk away at any time. No strings attached. Click on this link to sign up and see for yourself: https://www.paypal.com/refer/pal=DLucas%40TeamExpansion.org Remember… last we heard… residents of some countries were still having trouble qualifying. We hope yours is on “the approved list”.

  5. LANGUAGE TRAINING FOR NEW MISSIONARIES, IN TORONTO – Slated for June 16-28, this ten day seminar helps you to identify your own learning style, understand your strengths and weakness in language learning. You will leave equipped with more than enough natural and easily implemented learning activities, projects, techniques, skills & strategies. There are still a few places open for new participants. Contact Robert <missionprepatsympaticodotca> or call 416-284-5645 for more information. </missionprepatsympaticodotca>

  6. FUNDING FOR NON-AMERICAN STUDENTS IN THE USA — Do you have a national colleague or counterpart . . . maybe one that you’re training . . . that you’d love to send to the USA for further training? (Maybe your mission organization doesn’t even permit that . . . or maybe it does.) Either way, are there specific sources to which you’d send these kinds of candidates? If you’d feel comfortable sharing those, we have a compiler willing to gather the information, then make it available later to those in similar situations. Specifically, we’re looking for information about scholarships, grants, work opportunities or anything similar. Please send any tips to <handsfeet81athotmaildotcom>. She’ll assemble the information and forward it to us here at Brigada Today. for later publishing. </handsfeet81athotmaildotcom>

  7. INSTANT CONFIRMATION OF SHORT-TERM INSURANCE COVERAGE — Have you waited until the last minute to get health insurance for your team? Insurance Services of America, a Christian organization that specializes in health and life insurance for missionaries and mission organizations, now has online applications available for group coverage. Visit them on the web at http://www.missionaryhealth.net and click on the link for group coverage. Coverage is available on their “Day Tripper” plan for as low as $1.08 per day! If you have questions email them <healthatmissionaryhealthdotnet>, or call them at 1-800-647-4589 in the USA or via Net2Phone. Insurance Services of America is not tied to just one company; they have several choices available, so they can shop FOR the missionary or mission agency. Individual coverage available as well as the group coverage. </healthatmissionaryhealthdotnet>

  8. PRAYER & FASTING FOR KIDS — A lighthearted, fast paced seven and a half minute video narrated by kids for kids, ages 4-9, encourages kids to fast and pray for other nations. The heart of the video is Isaiah 58’s emphasis on the poor and needy, and having a heart for justice. Many non-essential food items and approaches are suggested in a light touch, kid friendly way. You can order Prayer and Fasting for Kids, postage paid for $14.00 (US) by writing Joey and Fawn Parish, 540 W. Highland Drive, Camarillo, California USA 93010 or email <joeyatgracebridgedotorg>. Please let them know you heard about it in Brigada Today! They sometimes send a gift to cover our expenses here! </joeyatgracebridgedotorg>

  9. PBASE: A GREAT PLACE TO SHOW YOUR PICS — So have you ever visited PBase? For now, it’s a free place to host your pix. Maybe they’ll charge someday . . . but for now, they function by donation. Fast. Simple. Smooth. Free.

  10. ALTERNATIVES TO “X10 VIDEO” YAHOO! GROUPS — Searching for an alternative list-serve? Tired of the infamous “x10 wireless webcam ads” on Yahoo!Groups? Here are at least 3 options. For one, try InJesus.com. They offer a free service, and while there are still ads at least they are for Christian products and materials. PLUS if anyone in the group orders a product advertised, the group owner gets 10% of the price. Not bad. For more information, check out http://www.injesus.com . (Thanks for the testimony, Niel!) Peter suggested http://hundred-acre-woods.com/lists/index.html . Pay them $10/month and say goodbye to ads forever. Another option: Peter overcame the ads by placing a small jpeg picture (any picture) at the start of the message. He wrote, “If I sent out just an attached picture on it’s own the ad would appear, but placing a small jpeg in the message somehow eliminated the ads.” Worth a try! (Thanks for the tip Peter!)

  1. MISSIONS MAPS ON CD-ROM AVAILABLE NOW! — GMI has just released WorldVue: The Great Commission Map Collection, containing over 500 maps and graphs in popular digital graphics formats. All the missions themes from GMI’s overhead transparency sets are included, plus political maps of each country and region. View them on screen, print them, or copy and paste them into your electronic documents. No royalty fees are required to use the images for most Christian ministry purposes. For Windows and Mac, WorldVue sells for $39.95, but for Brigada Today subscribers we have negotiated the special price of *$29.95* (plus shipping and tax) for orders placed by June 22. To order, go to http://www.gmi.org/brigada or contact Lorri at <infoatgmidotorg> or phone 719-531- 3599. </infoatgmidotorg>

  2. CATCH THE POTENTIAL OF THOSE MAPS — I hope you were able to imagine the potential of that map software in the item above. I’ll give you an example. My CD came on a Friday. I grabbed it and headed out the door for a weekend speaking engagement to a church of 2000. By Sunday morning, my presentation was practically *revolutionized* by the inclusion of richly-researched maps about the country I was highlighting in my message. It doesn’t really matter which part of the world you have to cover — this one’s got at least *something* on just about *everywhere*. There are GIFs, TIFs, and a ton of other formats… with all different pixel ratios and sizes, so it’ll adapt to the level of resolution and clarity you need. And the interface couldn’t be simpler. The maps aren’t locked into some kind of weird format that forces you to send royalty payments to the authors every time you turn around. Get this — there are *hundreds*, maybe *thousands* of maps on this CD — and they’re all available for this one $30 price. I bought a CD not long ago from a commercial vendor for $60… something like “Coolmaps” or whatever. I’ve barely used it. The maps weren’t as focused on missions… and frankly, it just wasn’t as easy to implement. If you’re a mobilizer — or if you’re a goer — either way, if you print brochures, newsletters, or flyers, get this CD. I guarantee you’ll find something useful within one month. If you don’t, send it back to GMI and I bet they’ll cheerfully refund your money. And in case you were wondering, I don’t work for them — and they’re not giving me any kind of benefit “cut” for this announcement. I’m just one beggar telling another where to find bread. :-)

  3. LEARN ABOUT HINDUS — A two-week Summer course entitled Christian Witness in the Hindu World will be held at Fuller Theological Seminary, 135 North Oakland, Pasadena, California, from June 24 to July 5, 2002. This course provides an overview of 1) the Hindu World, 2) Hinduism¹s globalization, 3) its relationship to Christianity in the Indian Sub- continent, 4) Christian evangelization attempts in the past, 5) various contextual questions arising, and 6) proposals for finding a new way forward. See the Fuller website for full details: http://www.fuller.edu . It is possible to register on-line. Any questions, please contact Christine Cervantes at the Fuller School of World Mission: <swm-acadprogdiratdeptdotfullerdotedu> </swm-acadprogdiratdeptdotfullerdotedu>

  4. 1) NEED ANONYMOUS WEBMAIL? — Now you can get it . . . and the staff people are folks you can trust. The leadership at Global Resources for Computing (GRC) actually hails from MAF’s old “xc.org” legacy. Down through the past few years, these are the same guys that have consistently tried to fuel information technology for global missions. Now working under the banner of GRC, they’ve set up a SSL (Secure) Webmail service to beat the band. It’s anonymous — meaning that you could use it for sensitive messages, where higher standards of security are required. This new service will offer SSL Based Webmail, POP3 and IMAP services. The service is due to roll out April 20th, 2002. Currently GRC is accepting applications for Beta Testers to test the new service in field type use. There is no charge for the beta testers to use the service during the beta testing period (Mar 12 – Apr 18th). If you or your organization is interested in Beta Testing this new service, please contact GRC at (909) 795-3877 or FAX (909) 795-0327 or email <infoatgrcomputingdotnet>. This offer is open to individuals and organizations involved in non-profit humanitarian organizations, or faith based ministries. GRC will be offering the service on a monthly subscription basis. The fees will be affordable for individuals and there will be price breaks for multiple addresses or corporate users. Read more at http://www.grcomputing.net</infoatgrcomputingdotnet>

9) TRAIN IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE — Lifewater International (on the web at:

http://www.lifewater.org )

will be holding “Participatory Hygiene Education Training” seminars in April and July 2002. The seminars are specifically designed to give short-term Christian workers an alternative to traditional missions trips focused on curative medical clinics. Short-term overseas medical clinics typically focus on western style curative care without addressing the root causes of disease. Participatory Hygiene Education involves people in the local community in the process of determining their health problems, how to prevent them and how to train others in the process. Based on Medical Ambassadors International Community Health Evangelism program, Lifewater’s hygiene training program integrates scriptural and physical principles to address the cycle of disease and death related to water, sanitation and hygiene practices. For more information or for a registration packet, contact Trudy at Lifewater. 1-888-543-3426 or 1-805-772-0600 or email <trudyatlifewaterdotorg>. The April class will be held in California and the July class will be held in Texas. Registration deadline for the April class is </trudyatlifewaterdotorg>April 1, 2002.

11) STATS NEEDED: % GOING TO THE UNREACHED — One of Caleb Project’s hallmarks has been the “World-View Demonstration,” a skit which uses volunteers to illustrate demographics such as world religions, level of gospel-reachedness, and missionary sending. Nate Wilson is helping with a revision of this demonstration to update the statistics from the time the skit was developed twenty years ago, and is looking for current documentation which could substantiate (or update) the statistic of one out of ten missionaries going to the unreached part of the world. Can you help him find up-to-date documentation on what percentage of foreign missionaries are sent to unreached parts of the world? 14) A NEW REALITY: MULTICULTURAL TEAMS — What are the questions we fail to ask in multicultural teams? What are the identity issues of the workers unique to these teams? Are there extra stress factors? What role do the different forms of logic play? How does this play out in relationships? decision-making? leadership? And what about the things that trip us up so easily – retreats and relaxation? And the Achilles heel – finances and lifestyle? Are there advantages to working in multicultural teams?

What issues need to be attended to most in selection and training people for these teams? How can leadership prepare their workers for such teams? These and other related subjects will be handled in a workshop from 27-31 May 2002 offered by Lianne Roembke in Limassol, Cyprus. Dr. Roembke has been involved in training such teams for over 25 years and it was the subject of her doctoral dissertation. For more information see

15) LIFE INSURANCE FOR OVERSEAS MISSIONARIES — With the tragic events of 9/11 it may be prudent to review your life insurance program and determine if your family will be financially provided for in the case of death. Adams & Associates International (sm) can arrange a 5-year level premium, level term life insurance policy for overseas missionaries through Lloyd’s, London. The initial application proposal is subject to medical underwriting and possibly rated for geographical location including current political and world events. Once the application proposal is approved, the terms agreed to by the applicant and a policy issued, the annual premium rates are level for the 5 year term. The policy is renewable if overseas service is maintained. The cost of international life insurance is now, more than ever, based on world events and location, which we all know, can change quickly and without notice. For complete information, contact Adams & Associates International (sm) at <aaiataaintldotcom> (if in a sensitive area, please type “Restricted” in the subject line) or call 1-800-922-8438 / (803)-758-1400.</aaiataaintldotcom>

16) THE BACKPAGE: PARTNERING MOST WITH PRAYER PARTNERS — Today I’m wondering what you ask your prayer partners to pray for. Sometimes I hear missionaries poke fun at those who pray, “Lord bless the missionaries.” But in reality, don’t we have to accept some of the responsibility for our friends and loved ones not knowing how to pray? Some of our Team Expansion missionaries have long ago figured out that prayer covering can mean a *world* of difference. Others are still at the starting gate, wondering how to begin. How ’bout taking some of these idea-starter prayer requests and sending them to a select group of a dozen friends or so. Ask them to pray. Some will write back and say they will. Those could become your new prayer group! (These are written from “First person” point of view.)

When traveling…

*** That we will pass through customs and immigration lines without incident
*** That our planes will not encounter mechanical problems or trouble from terrorists
*** That we’ll make all our connections

Health and Safety

*** Protection from accidents, crime, natural disasters, terrorists, and dangerous animals
*** Protection from all kinds of sickness
*** That we’ll find time for proper sleep, rest, and exercise
*** That our food and water needs will be met by the Lord

Spiritual Watchcare

*** Good times of intimacy with Jesus in Bible, prayer and worship
*** Protection from dark forces in spiritual realms
*** Protection from discouragement, fear, and doubt
*** That we’ll demonstrate purity, humility, boldness, wisdom, patience, love for people, teachable spirit and the power of the Holy Spirit

Teamwork

*** That our team will experience and express unity, love, good communication, patience, and spiritual gifts
*** That we can resist temptation toward jealousy, envy, bitterness, and pride
*** That we’ll be granted grace for cultural adjustments, dealing with jet lag, being away from family and friends and lack of privacy.
*** That God will grant us wisdom to design and implement effective efforts that will make a long-term difference here . . . and that we’ll be able to establish and maintain a solid friendships with government officials and other leaders in this land.

Verses to Read as you Pray

*** Exodus 4:12; 33:14
*** Psalms 4:8, 19:14, 121:1-8
*** Isaiah 40:29-31; 55:10-11
*** Zechariah 4:6
*** Acts 1:8, 4:29,30
*** Ephesians 3:16-20; 6:10-20

(* Portions of the above prayer requests adapted from original prayers by Gail Seiver, as featured in _World Christian_, Vol. 14, Number 4.)

By the way… if you get a chance… 4 of us from Team Expansion are heading into Central Asia tomorrow. We’d actually really appreciate your prayers for us as we travel.

CAUTION: RUMBLES ABOUT PAYPAL

We’re beginning to hear it from more than one source. Though we haven’t personally experienced any problems with PayPal, we’re starting to wonder… have they extended themselves beyond what they’re able to manage? We’re currently in the process of verifying a couple of horror stories that we’ve heard out there in the Internet “jungle”. So… for now… be cautious and we’d suggest you not tie up a *lot* of money there in a standing balance. Apparently, there are some problems in the system. If you’ve got a PayPal horror story, please send it to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg with subject line PAYPAL FEEDBACK. Thanks.

WHERE DO YOU TURN FOR EVANGELISTIC COURSES?

Suppose you’re trying to share your faith with an Italian. You wish that there could be some kind of movie or outline in his or her heart language — Italian, in this case. Where does one go to find resources like that? Is there any one source… like a web-page or a toll-free number where we can all go to find sources for evangelistic material in other languages (not *just* Italian… no *sono* Italiano :-) )? If so, let’s publish promote it. If not, someone needs to probably *start* it! :-) If you’ve got an idea, write me here at <dlucasatteamexpansiondotorg> and, if you’d be so kind, put the word “OUTREACH” in upper case in the subject line. Thanks for any lead — a website, an organization, a toll-free number, even an email address. We’ll republish the info here for the world to read.</dlucasatteamexpansiondotorg>

WEB-WATCH: WORLDCHRISTIANS.ORG

They say it was here in Brigada that worldchristians.org launched its website not three years ago. Imagine that within the next week they should pass 1,000,000 hits! They had hoped for maybe 5,000 visits in their first year. What’s more, they’ve opened tons of new Schools of Missions, and the news page traffic is unbelievable which reflects the world interest in following the call of Jesus into mission. It’s worth a look, if for no other reason than to take note of what’s hot…

CORRECTION ON “NEW BOOK ON ISLAM”

Remember that new book on Islam by Don McCurry, _Healing the Broken Family of Abraham: New Life for Muslims_? (We featured it in last week’s _Brigada Today_, Item #10.) It explores the roots of Islam through the family of Abraham, historical and cultural aspects of Islam, and effective ministry help. Turns out that the telephone number provided to us was incorrect. The correct toll-free number was supposed to be +1-800-474-4147. (Or avoid the whole phone thing and look at http://www.isionline.org .) Please pardon any inconvenience!

THE BACK PAGE: THANKSGIVING HAS ALL THE MORE MEANING

Bob Mayhew’s legacy lives on. His memorial fund hasn’t attracted a *lot* of donors yet… but I guess it really only took two. One Brigada participant jumped right in and gave $10 in special tribute. We only received one other donation — but that one other donation basically covered the remainder of what we’ll owe for Brigada web-hosting fees and email services. What’s more, the donor wishes to remain anonymous. “Only for the glory of God,” he said. Goodness… as a tribute to Bob’s 6 years of quiet service… and for the glory of God… $500 will pay all of Brigada’s expenses for a year. (In case you’re curious, Brigada pays no salaries.) So thanks much to the sacrificial friend… and in Bob’s name, and God’s name, Happy Thanksgiving to the whole Brigada family.

In this issue….

IN MEMORY OF BOB & PATTI MAYHEW, OUR WEB VOLUNTEERS

This past week saw the passing of a great couple for Christ, Bob & Patti Mayhew, both 52 years old. Bob had previously served as a professor at the University of California’s Riverside campus, where he was responsible for PC support for Academic Computing in the Computing & Communications department. Over the years, Bob had developed some *great* tools in Perl that gradually helped him transfer hundreds and hundreds of pages of Brigada issues into HTML language for the web. Patti was quite an artist in her own right. (The logo used for Brigada Today at brigada.org was her creation.) Their tragic deaths this past week, within minutes of one another, signals a great loss for the entire Brigada family. Here was a duo who worked without pay since August 18, 1995 (ever since Brigada participant Paul Lay had recommended them to the job — Thanks Paul)! Here was a married couple totally sold out to missions. Bob had entertained long-term visions of serving some Islamic community in a future era of his life. On behalf of the entire Brigada family, we’ve sent flowers to the memorial service taking place on this very day, Nov. 30th, at a church in Riverside, CA. On an enclosed card, we wrote a message thanking Bob & Patti’s 2 surviving (adult) children for their parents’ incredible and selfless service record, signed by the “Nearly 10,000 members of the Brigada online family.”
--------------------------------------

IN HONOR OF BOB & PATTI, THE MAYHEW MEMORIAL FUND

In honor of Bob & Patti, Team Expansion has set up a special trust — the Mayhew Memorial Fund — with the proceeds to be used to specifically underwrite the expenses of the Brigada website and email network. (Team Expansion is a non-profit, 501(c)3 incorporation, so for those in the USA, contributions are tax-deductible.) At Bob’s request, we had always kept it a secret that Bob had funded most of Brigada’s expenses since about 1998. He never wanted any attention. In fact, in most cases, he refused to even publicize or even mention his own name on the website. So it seems somehow fitting that a gift in his name would continue the legacy for which he invested so much of himself, his time, and his treasure. Contributions in Bob & Patti’s name can be sent to: Mayhew Memorial Fund, 3700 Hopewell Rd., Louisville, KY 40299. Please make the check payable to Team Expansion and write “Mayhew Memorial Fund” in the memo line. A tax-deductible receipt will be sent to USA donors and all others will be sent a thank-you note via email (please don’t forget to provide yours). Those wishing to use the web can go to
http://www.brigada.org/sponsor.html and click on the “Donate” link at the bottom of the page to make a donation using a credit card or from a PayPal account. (If for some reason the Brigada site drops out during this transitional period, you could also use the “Donate” link at:
http://www.teamexpansion.org , on the righthand side of the page.)
Please be sure to mention in the “Special Instructions” box that the gift is for the Mayhew Memorial Fund. In addition, please make a note regarding how you’d like your name to be shown on the sponsors page. If you’d like the gift to be anonymous, just mark it as such. Note that it might take us a while to figure out Bob’s system to update everything. Thanks for your patience as we get it going again. Thanks in advance to any who feel led to contribute.

BRIGADA WEBSITE RUNNING SILENTLY, WITHOUT ITS HELMSMAN

So, if I can speak candidly for a moment, it’s kind of strange today for me to visit www.brigada.org . Really, truth be known, that’s Bob’s site, not Brigada’s. It’s hard for me to put into words what I feel as I click there… the way the web pages still obediently pop up, one after another, running silently, just as if Bob is somehow in the background, serving them personally. To me, it’s almost haunting. It probably sounds corny, but I can’t help but think of some kind of old mystery movie, where the wheel of an old ship has been tied, with the sails set so the bow heads into the wind. The helmsman is missing, having deserted his post for the time being. But the ship sails on into the dark. Those hundreds and hundreds of files, representing hundreds and hundreds of late nights, stand today as his legacy. May God bless his grown daughter, son-in-law, and son. May He raise up others like Bob & Patti for the challenges of tomorrow… and may Bob’s name ever be remembered as synonymous with selfless servanthood and extreme endurance.

Our tribute today isn’t just to Bob & Patti, it’s to all those like the Mayhews, who serve daily in silent ministry for the good of the Kingdom, in hopes that unreached peoples everywhere can one day know Christ as King! To all those servants, we offer thanks . . . and hopes for God’s richest blessings. …

SOME ARE RECEIVING 10 INFECTED EMAILS PER DAY

And I’m one of them. Believe it or not, there are some who are receiving literally 10 infected emails per day these days (i.e., over the past week). Most are due to incredibly virulent forms of w32dotbadtransdotbatmmdothtml . Read the full security alert on this one at:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ (click on the “Security Alert” for the badtrans virus). How does one avoid getting badtrans? You guessed it: Don’t click on the file attachment, make sure your virus definitions are up to date, and finally, make sure you’ve disabled Outlook’s tendency to automatically execute macros and visual basic scripts. The trojan worm attachment will typically have file names that look like:
CARD.Doc.pif or NEWS_DOC.mp3.scr. But the virus (or more properly, the worm) randomly chooses these file names from a list including names like “PICS, IMAGES, README, New_Napster_Site, NEWS_DOC, HAMSTER, YOU_ARE_FAT!, SEARCHURL, SETUP, CARD, ME_NUDE, Sorry_about_yesterday, S3MSONG, DOCS, HUMOR, and FUN.” The trick is… the final extension for the entire file name will *always* end in “pif” or “scr”. For the benefit of all your friends on the Net, *please* make sure your virus definitions are up to date and don’t click on any attachments ending in those extensions. Thanks!

GOT CREATIVE FINANCIAL STRATEGY EXAMPLES?

Don in Colorado Springs is doing some research for a project dealing with creative strategic use of finances for kingdom work. If you know of any great examples of how people are defying the cultural norm of spending their resources on themselves and freeing up those finances for missions, please pass them along! Of particular interest would be people who have learned to live off 50% or less of their income, channeling the other 50% or more towards unreached peoples, OR people who have strategically invested for the express purpose of using the extra income for missions. In one example, two families decided to live together in a large house, sharing expenses, and freeing up thousands per year which they channeled towards the kingdom. If you know of other examples, please pass them to Don at <niemyerataoldotcom>. Once his report is completed he’ll send it in and we’ll make it available for all of us via an autoresponder.

OUT OF MORMONISM: A WOMAN’S TRUE STORY

Honest and eye-opening, OUT OF MORMONISM takes readers where few will ever see–behind the doors of the Mormon church and into the lives of a family seeking to leave. Part apologetic and part autobiography, the book begins with an explanation of how author Judy Robertson and her family were drawn into Mormonism, how they were constantly lived a life that never quite measured up even though they were “temple-worthy Mormons,” and how they finally found their freedom. OUT OF MORMONISM also compares Mormon beliefs with biblical truths. A great resource for those participating in the Salt Lake City Olympic Outreach in February 2002. A SPECIAL MOMENT FOR HINDUS?

An amazing turn of events is taking place in India. Anti-caste leaders, tired of living under the oppressive tenets of Hinduism, are persuading lower caste Hindus to renounce Hinduism. Ram Raj, one such leader, is encouraging oppressed Hindus to convert to a religion (such as Buddhism, Islam or Christianity) that will give them social, educational and vocational freedom. Raj is inviting millions of lower caste Hindus to a massive conversion rally that could trigger a religious sea-change in India, launching a tidal wave of Hindus out of Hinduism. book It’s becoming a new missionary buzzword. Discover what it’s all about in the third book of Roland Muller’s trilogy on Muslim Evangelism. ‘Honor and Shame, Unlocking the Door’ is refreshingly original and controversial. But it’s not just for those working with Muslims. Muller’s material applies to most of the cultures in the 10/40 window, plus the cultures of many aboriginal people around the world. SIRCAM VIRUS EPIDEMIC

virus Remember the earlier item about the Sircam virus seemingly become rampant in Christian circles? “SIRCAM TROJAN “WORM” (VIRUS) SEEMS RAMPANT IN CHRISTIAN CIRCLES” I was wrong. It’s rampant everywhere. I have a hunch that by now, most of us have seen those words, “I send you this file to have your advice.” One Brigada participant wrote last week saying he had received 30 Sircam-infected emails in one day! Bottom line: Get some good antivirus software, enable it (so that it filters your email), and keep the data file up to date. Remember, Norton software now does all that automatically, so if you have to make a choice, we recommend Norton. And we don’t get a referral bonus, by the way. :-) By the way, if you can’t afford virus software for the moment, but you have free or very cheap Internet access, one participant (Thanks Sherri!) recommended the following two sites, which perform virus checking interactively, at no cost to the user: http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp (We have not personally verified those sites.)

MEDICAL TRAINING FOR MISSIONARIES

graduation cap Elim Bible Institute will soon begin a two year program to train “International Health Technicians” (classes beginning September 2001). GODSMISSION.COMMUNITY

Someone must have seen our item in Brigada Today, ‘NOT MUCH HYPE ABOUT “GODSMISSION.COMMUNITY'”. This past week, we received information on this very event, billed as “North America’s most comprehensive gathering of mission leaders in recent years”. It’s slated for September 20 – 23 in Orlando, Florida to discover new pathways for collaborative global ministries. Forums will cover a wide variety of topics including partnership, church mobilization, creative missions options, personal evangelism and technological collaboration. Discussions and presentations will be augmented with worship, corporate prayer and time to network throughout the weekend. While participants are drawn primarily form the sponsoring networks of mission leaders, others are welcome as space allows. PERSPECTIVES MOVEMENT HOLDS NATIONAL FIELD COUNCIL

calendar “Perspectives on the World Christian Movement” has been experiencing dynamic growth with over 100 classes being offered this Fall across the U.S. and Canada. Over one hundred North American Perspectives coordinators, as well as two delegates from Korea, gathered in Denver this July for the triennial Perspectives National Field Council to help shape the movement for the 21st century. The Perspectives course was originally developed by Dr. Ralph Winter (U.S. Center for World Mission), in response to a marked increase in commitment cards turned in at the close of Urbana, 1973. Though the original intent was to provide training for college students headed to the mission field, the course also mobilizes lay people by “equipping the people of God for strategic participation in His plan to reach all peoples, tongues, tribes, and nations.” Council participants reported that more and more mission agencies’ candidates have been influenced by the Perspectives course, and Churches are taking more pro-active roles in sending, praying, or in adopting people groups, as a result of hosting the course.

Scott White, chairman of the Perspectives Executive Coordinators’ Council, noted, “Hearing reports from around the nation about the impact and growth of Perspectives was inspirational and left all with great expectations for the future of the movement.” Council participants addressed topics such as repackaging Perspectives material for children and gen-Xers, encouraging alumni for ongoing involvement, recapturing the course emphasis on passion for the Lord and his purposes, and harnessing the power of the web as a tool for mobilization. David Byrant (Concerts of Prayer International), Carol Davis (Global Spectrum), Steve Hawthorne (Waymakers), and Ralph Winter addressed the gathering, challenging participants to renew their vision both for the glory of God and for mobilizing lay people to use their gifts strategically to reach the unreached. Messages and workshops may be accessed on-line at http://www.GodsPerspective.org and clicking on Perspectives Field Council.

NEW EMAIL JOURNALS… TCKS, TENTMAKERS, RESEARCHING

letter and ligntening bolt Have you seen the new ejournal for missionaries exploring avenues of receptivity and seeking to understand how to reach unreached people groups? (Thanks Tony!) It also contains issues relating to subcultures of mission organizations. To subscribe, send an email to rossdotwoodsatmountiesdotorgdotau  (rossdotwoodsatmountiesdotorgdotau)   with “subscribe RTU” on subject line. SERVING INTERCULURALLY is very similar but does not use “Christian” language. It is for tentmakers in countries that are closed to regular missiological bulletins for security reasons, but will also appeal to subscribers of RTU. Its discussion is appropriate for secular workers who face the same issues in offering human services in intercultural contexts. Subscribe to same address with “subscribe SI” on the subject line. The TCK BULLETIN discusses the educational, emotional, and social needs of third Culture Kids–kids who are brought up in cultures that are different from the home cultures of their parents. (This includes most missionary kids). Same subscribe address, with “subscribe TCK” as subject. This information is also carried at: http://www.paciu.edu/woods/ejournals.htm

NATIVE LANGUAGE TOOLS

tools Logos wants missionaries around the world to have native language tools. They also want the countries that are not so commercially viable to be able to get Bible software for their native languages. They are trying to release their next version of Bible Software in as many foreign languages as possible. They have an online collaborative effort set up where people who are fluent in multiple languages can help be a part of the process. http://www.logos.com/titus/language/ So far we have 33 languages in the works! Since most of these languages don’t have any commercial market at all, we need all the help we can get in order to release our Bible Software in as many languages as possible for no extra charge.

You can see the status of our translation work live on the web at: http://www.logos.com/titus/language/status.asp

GOT BUSINESS CARDS? GET ‘EM FREE

I saw this URL float by my inbox, but I didn’t give it much thought ’til my buddy actually used it to order a set of 250 free (free) business cards of his own! Well I’ve got a copy of his right here on my desk and . . . guess what! They look GREAT! Colorful, substantial, and . . . you actually lay them out over the web! They’re pretty snazzy. And you can’t beat the price (FREE! :-) ). Here’s the disclaimer. My buddy got one free dollar bill when I ordered my business cards from his referral . . . and . . . I guess Brigada would get one free dollar bill if a reader orders cards using the link below. The great part is… here’s a chance to order something free . . . and help Brigada. (The downside is… it’ll set you back $4.95 for the postage to send them to you. :-) ) So anyway… bottom line… if you need 250 business cards and you’ve got $5, you’re in luck . . . and Brigada is too! :-) :-)

http://service.bfast.com/bfast/click?bfmid=36985903&siteid=38374542&bfpage=homepage

Thanks in advance, if you’re one of the folks who needs cards! And hey… set up your free cards, get signed on so you can refer others, then those $1 referral bonuses will come your way as well! :-) And here’s the greatest part of all !!! International participants are more than welcome to order cards and participate in the referral program! Yahoooo! Yahoo Finally, life is good for international folks! :-) :-)

ARISE, SHINE MOROCCO!

praying hands Today only about one in fifty thousand Moroccans is a believer and in fellowship. Yet after more than a century of missionary endeavor, many believe the time is ripe for breakthrough in Morocco. Expat workers and national believers in Morocco have announced plans for an international Year of Prayer for Morocco and its peoples (YOP4M) in 2002. A video resource, a “52 Weeks of Prayer” booklet, and other materials are being produced for distribution. Prayer requests and praise reports from all regions of Morocco will be sent to participants around the world throughout 2002. Short-term teams will be coordinated. A global network must now be established. If you can help with this need or are interested in YOP4M please contact the International Facilitators at YOP4Mathotmaildotcom  (YOP4Mathotmaildotcom)  . You are invited to play an important part in this effort.

OPERATION WORLD 2001 BULK PURCHASE BY MAY 10TH!

book If you’d like to partner with the US Center on Operation World bulk purchases, you’d better act fast. The publishing company has given them a May 11th deadline. Operation World is coming out in the fall, and you can get in on bulk pre-publication pricing. The U.S. Center for World Mission is again offering Operation World at cost (or as close as they can get!) which should be $4.95 or less including shipping to you (sorry, U.S. addresses only). Last time we all got together and purchased 100,000 copies before the presses started rolling. If you are interested in 100 or more copies of Operation World 2001 for (about) $4.95 delivered to U.S. addresses, email to ow2001atuscwmdotorg  (ow2001atuscwmdotorg)   with your contact information (name, address, phone) and a quantity. You can also call 626-398-2328. They cannot go for fewer copies, so it would be a waste of Internet bandwidth to ask. :-) And just in case you were wondering, the book is not out yet, but should be sometime in September.

WHAT TO DO WITH JOB OFFERS/REQUESTS

Brigada Logo We sometimes receive notices for job openings, many of which are in 10/40 window nations. In general, it’s difficult to publish all those, since this list is typically reserved for news that would hopefully impact larger numbers of users rather than one user at a time. For example, here’s a school for the children of Christian workers located in Ankara Turkey. By this fall, they need at least 3 more elementary teachers and at least 2 more junior high teachers (state certification required; experience preferred). They even provide enough stipend to cover housing. (Teachers need to raise the remainder of their support. For more info, write Rhonda kwiestatattglobaldotnet  (kwiestatattglobaldotnet)  .) But unfortunately, we just can’t make this newsletter into a “job line.” There are nearly 10,000 subscribers… and this notice would eventually impact just 5 of them. However, we have launched a service that can help in this and many other cases. It’s called “Brigada-Opportunities.” It’s like having a free placement service combined with a free “headhunter” service (the friendly kind) all in one! If you’re searching for the right opportunity, just send a note to brigada-opportunities-subscribeategroupsdotcom  (brigada-opportunities-subscribeategroupsdotcom)  . And if you’ve got an opportunity, just email the note to brigada-opportunitiesategroupsdotcom  (brigada-opportunitiesategroupsdotcom)  . (Those with opportunities don’t actually have to join — their email will float into the conference even though they’re not subscribed! That way, they get to place their notice and those who are searching for the opportunity get to read the mail! When the volunteer hits reply, the reply goes straight to the person who sent the message (not to the whole conference). So… those with job options — please try Brigada-Opportunities! And if you’re searching, please subscribe there.

YAHOO TO OFFER PORNOGRAPHIC MATERIALS – THEN MAYBE NOT

WebWatch If you’re a regular participant in a YahooGroup (formerly eGroups) then maybe you’ve caught wind of the rumor that the service’s management recently decided to offer pornographic materials in a larger, more visible “company-sponsored” way. (To see the original release, have a look at: http://foxnews.com/story/0,2933,5537,00.html ) However, after receiving numerous complaints from customers after revelations that the company had already been peddling x-rated materials anyway, Yahoo announced about a week later that it will no longer be selling pornographic videos period. “We consistently strive to act responsibly and constantly evaluate our policies based on what our users tell us,” said Yahoo president and chief operating officer Jeff Mallet. He added that the company will no longer sell banner ads to the pornography industry. (Source: CNSNews.com — thanks for the tip, Kirk!) Want an alternative to the whole situation? Try out StrategicNetwork.org’s new email conferencing software at: www.strategicnetwork.org It’s free . . . and becoming more powerful all the time. And what’s more, it’s run by Christians for global Christian purposes. So you know the management… (or at least we here at Brigada Today do!). Will Brigada Today switch over? Well… it’s always a possibility… but for now, we’re thrilled that YahooGroups took a stand. So… for the time being, we intend to ride the wave of good will following a decision for the good!

Joseph labtoesatjunodotcom  (labtoesatjunodotcom)   is looking for recommendations on an adult Sunday School curriculum that is very introductory, motivating, on God’s heart for the world. He’s searching for something inspiring, with visionary stories on what God is doing around the world — and something that doesn’t require extensive research and pulling together of materials for the teacher. What do you recommend? Write Joseph for ideas . . . and we’ll ask him to assemble a report for a future autoresponder here in Brigada Today. Thanks!

Thanks to for hosting the Brigada mailing list.

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us! See the note above if you’d like to submit items for Brigada Today. Thanks for understanding. Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.
