The primary focus of this four week medical awareness tour is on ‘learning for discerning’ the possibilities for future cross-cultural service in medical and health related fields. Individuals in pre-med programs, medical school, nursing students, medical residents or those early in their health related studies or careers that have an interest in serving in the name and spirit of Christ in an overseas context should consider application. The program will run from late May 2012 to late June 2012 and will cost around $5,000. There are eight openings for this trip and applications will only be accepted until February 17, 2012. 3) Global Missions Health Conference Set for Nov. 11-13 —

Each fall the Global Missions Health Conference brings together more than 2,000 believers, hundreds of students, and nearly 200 medical missions organizations interested in global health outreach. The GMHC in Louisville, Ky., Nov. 11-13, offers the information, experience, and organizations that are using medical work to change the world. It offers a chance to meet others who are engaged in what works in worldwide healthcare. The GMHC will also offer nearly 100 breakout sessions on more in-depth topics from jungle surgery, trafficking, and HIV education to the disease of poverty, a sustainable prayer life and more. The goal of the conference is to inform, train, and equip healthcare professionals and students to use their medical skills to further God’s kingdom, all through sharing the Gospel with those in need on both the international and domestic mission fields. The conference also hosts an exhibit hall for hundreds of medical missions organizations.

3) Wellness Inventory For Cross Cultural Workers

Help Phil, a grad student, develop a wellness inventory which will allow managers and member care staff to assess the well-being of colleagues in the physical, emotional, spiritual, social, occupational and intellectual areas of their lives. Unlike many of the current assessments that attempt to answer the question, “How sick are you?” this inventory is more like a checklist to assess one’s well-being and may be useful for an on-site visit or off-site debriefing with healthy individuals. Now you can get it. An anonymous Brigada participant tipped us off to this off-the-beaten-path course in Lancaster, PA, Feb 7 and 8, 8:30am-4:30pm est each day. It’s designed by a retired Emergency Physician with 35 years of Trauma, EMS/ Rescue, and instructional experience. The methods and techniques taught are derived from over 10 years of front-line trauma care in an urban gangland zone and over 35 years of medical practice in environments as diverse as remote underground in caves (delayed evacuation to surface of 20 hrs), on the side of remote hills (48 hr bivouac in “whiteout” conditions), and at sea. The topics seem to include just about everything you can imagine in the wilderness, suturing, wound debridement, dealing with burns, eye injuries, splints, heat exhaustion and a whole lot more. Maybe this seems like overkill, but, for malaria-infested areas, there’s something deeply secure about knowing that wherever you land to sleep, you’re covered. I recommend taking along something like the Epco Tropicscreen II. (Google it and the Campmor.com version will probably come up in the top 5 for about $70. Worth every penny of it.
