MORE ON DONOR MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE — In addition to what was previously mentioned, Ed suggests two additional products, both of which have a long track record of successful service:

a) Denari Online fundraising management software has actually been on the market for quite a while. It uses a simple Macintosh or Windows web browser front end. It has awesome features and a high-end price tag which varies according to the precise package purchased. Features range from simple donor reports to enabling credit card donations, electronic fund transfers and more. See

http://www.denarisoft.com/products/denarionline.shtml

b) A simpler and less expensive solution that might be more appropriate for some organizations is FileMaker Pro (now at version 8.5). In addition to being a very user-friendly database tool, FileMaker has many “vertical market” extensions available for it, such as for non- profit organizations to manage volunteer data, donor info, grants and funding, mailing lists, create and manage surveys, etc. FileMaker has won many awards, such as PC World, PC Magazine, Macworld, Government Computer News, etc. FileMaker is a user-friendly, world class tool that is just as at home in a Mac OS X system as it is in Windows. Ed holds that FileMaker doesn’t require a high level of expensive tech support to run it, yet there is a large network of tech support available for specialized programming needs.
A NEW SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF RAISING SUPPORT -– Raising support can be made into an exciting and enjoyable ministry. Here’s low-cost, individualized training offered over live, interactive video conferencing. You get the video conferencing unit on loan and you meet online with a skilled trainer for six hours a week for three weeks.
THE BACKPAGE: LEARNING FROM THE HOMETOWN OF “HOOSIERS” — I enjoy pulling lessons from modern-day stories to which Brigada participants will relate. (To me, it’s kind of Jesus-like to tell parables.) Last week I mentioned “Hoosiers,” a 1986 movie starring Gene Hackman which profiled a small-town basketball team from a high school in Indiana. Most people have heard that the movie is based on real history but perhaps fewer have checked out the real story. Being a Hoosier myself, originally, (“Hoosier” is the name used to describe natives from the state of Indiana) I’ve always been interested in the movie. The other night, as I drove across southeastern Indiana on a Saturday evening, I had to take a detour because a bridge was out. As I made my way down the two-lane highways on which the signs sent me, I passed one that said, without much fanfare, “Milan 3 miles”, complete with an arrow to the left. I couldn’t pass it up — because I remembered that “Hoosiers” is actually about the real small-town of Milan, population: about 1000. (Back in the 1950s, there were even fewer.) Driving into this small Indiana farming community took me back home again. (I’m from *Freetown*, Indiana. :-) ) Seeing no signs of the movie — or any other fanfare — I pulled over at the Milan Sports Bar & Grill to play Columbo. Seemed like the right place to begin on a Saturday night. Sure enough, Milan was the place, but they were hard-pressed to figure out where to send me to learn the story behind the movie. Yes, a small antique store had posted some memorabilia, but it was closed. No one could think of anything else. My heart sank just a bit. Here was a town that had played host to one of the greatest sports stories of all time and … they were sending me to a closed antique store.

After verifying that the store was closed, I began “man-on-the-street” interviews. Shew. Again, I was pretty let-down. One young man knew the story, but he hadn’t seen the movie. He pointed to the water tower, which still sported the words, “1954 State Champs”. But he admitted he hadn’t seen the movie. Another said it might be a great story for a basketball player. A boy installing subwoofers in his car sent me to the Dairy Queen, where, at least, they had posted a picture and a newspaper article on the wall. But the people in the DQ looked at me strangely as I tried to learn more about the “real story.” One of them finally suggested I go to the Jay-C store to buy a copy of the DVD. I shrugged and said ok… but when I got to the grocery store, no one could find even a single copy of “Hoosiers”. (They had plenty of other random movies; just none that told about what just might be the greatest thing in recent history that’s ever happened in their town.) One girl at the cash register smiled apologetically, explaining that she had graduated from Milan High, but again, she admitted that she hadn’t actually watched the movie.

That’s when I realized… Milan had forgotten a piece of its identity. As I drove on eastward, I pondered what I had just experienced, fearful that the same thing happens in our own lives. Sometimes, we forget who we are. We forget the stories of the people that founded our mission organizations, our companies, and our congregations. Little by little, we move on . . . and the great lessons of the past — like… little schools can win over much bigger rivals if they just train, work hard, and believe in themselves… those lessons become cobwebs in some dark cave of our consciences.

So here are my 3 “lessons learned” from a Milan sunset: a) Figure out who you are. What’s unique about you, your church, or your mission. In the case of Milan, they lived one of the greatest sports stories of all time. Yet, today, some of their residents hardly understand how it applies to them personally… or to their futures. b) Write it down. Create some kind of signposts that won’t let you forget about it. In Milan’s case, one has to wonder if they couldn’t come up with just a *tad* more of an exhibit or a bulletin board or *something*… (It might actually bring some business to their Jay-C store! :-) ) c) Celebrate it. Be glad for your history. Learn from past mistakes. Move on, yes, but move on with the knowledge that your past can help you make a better future.

So … next time you’re driving through southeastern Indiana, by all means stop at Milan. But bring your own DVD. And if you stop for ice cream, be prepared for stares if you lean over to read the faded newspaper clippings on the wall. Oh — and … let’s do better with our own stories.

That’s all I’ve go to say about that. :-)

HOW ENGAGED ARE MISSIONARIES? ASK THEM! — Many companies and ministries survey their employees to learn how to create more effective work environments. But typical workplace surveys don’t address cross- cultural mission issues. So, the WEA Mission Commission, Global Mapping International, Best Christian Workplaces and Generating Change have teamed up to provide Engage!, a process to help current and former field missionaries give feedback to their agencies via email and Internet. Registration is open between now and March for U.S.-based sending agencies (other WEA national movements may consider something similar). The cost is affordable and is tiered by agency size. Learn more and register your agency to participate at: http://www.gmi.org/engage Direct questions to Jim at jim(at)gmi(dot)org [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .]

YOURS IN OUR LORD’S SERVICE: THANKS FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT — What a boost. In today’s mail, we received a handwritten note of encouragement from an Englishman, intent on seeing us push forward. Inside the note were two $10 bills, sent via air mail from across the Atlantic. It was signed, “Yours in our Lord’s service.” How can we not push on, after receiving notes and encouragement like that? Thank you brother! If you’d like to add to this anonymous brother’s $20, just click on “sponsor” in the top menu (to use PayPal or a credit card), or just send a check payable to Team Expansion to: Team Expansion (Brigada secretary), 11327 Jefferson Trace Blvd., Louisville, KY 40291. As always, be sure to let us know if you’d like us to promote any particular service or ministry, or if you’d prefer your gift be anonymous.

THE BACKPAGE — CHASING GOOGLE: TRY THIS EXPERIMENT — Does anybody really understand Google? I don’t. Try this experiment. (Please.) Suppose Brigada were going to move to a new site called Emerald Hills. (We are, by the way.) Suppose you were kind enough to help us explore the question, how do we promote the future home of Brigada… just to kind of help out. Well here’s that you could do:

Open your browser, go to Google.com and search for “Emerald Hills.” When you see, among other things, tons of sites relating to the city in California (Emerald Hills, CA or even “Emerald Lake Hills”) and the golf courses (Emerald Hills), :-) don’t click to them. Instead, without logging off the web, immediately do a follow-up search like… “Emerald Hills pray retreat learn” (which should bring our new Emerald Hills campus to the top of the list: EmeraldHills.info), click on the EmeraldHills.info site so Google learns that people like to go there. Now here’s the weird thing: Google apparently *learns* that you thought Emerald Hills was . . . “more relevant” to your search. In other words, Google memorizes that you found what you were looking for (or at least you *thought* you would) at EmeraldHills.info.

Now — first of all — thank you for your help (if you chose to give it). But second of all, this has big-time ramifications for your ministry. If you happen to have an email update, you could ask your constituency to do, essentially, the same thing. Instead of always giving them the link in your email update, ask them — just every once and awhile — to go to *Google* and search for it. Help them out by giving them the two-step that I mentioned in the above paragraph: First search for your site by just typing in the name of your org.; but tell them not to click on other stuff. Then give them a more exact criterion that you know will lift your site higher in the rankings, and then ask them to click through to your site now. In this way — apparently — you’ll climb up in the rankings. We did this with a dozen or so people in our home staff . . . and maybe 25 other volunteers… so 50 people in all and suddenly, Emerald Hills climbed from 93rd to 65th out of 2.8 million resulting pages. And that climb took place in just 48 hours. So… don’t just click to it — *search* for it now and then. :-)

By the way, once you’re there at the Emerald Hills site anyway, why not read one or two pages. Check out the “News” section, especially under “Dreams to Build”. Click on that article, “World Harvest Center Plans Underway.” Dream with us that one day Brigada will have an archive room in that building… one that you can visit if and when you ever pass through Louisville. Dream of prayer walking on those trails… miles of them. Imagine your missions team renting that facility to do a knock- down, drag-out, top-notch retreat focusing on prayer & missions. (OK… so I’m excited about Emerald Hills. But you get the idea. :-) ) (Oh… Once again, thanks for your help with the experiment. Now you go try it on your own organization or group.)

FOR ACADEMICIANS: REVIEWING MOREHEAD’S “NEW RELIGIOUS MOV’TS” — If you’re the seminary type, you might enjoy a good heady review of John Morehead’s article which appeared in Encountering New Religious Movements: A Holistic Approach. Eds. Irving Hexham, Stephen Rost & John Morehead II (Kregel, 2004; ISBN#: 0-8254-2893-9). Mr. Morehead’s article is titled “Where Do We Go From Here?: Transforming Evangelical Responses to New Religions.” The review is by Jeff Downs. Find it at: http://www.rctr.org/transformingreview.htm
12. THE BACK PAGE: THREE CHEERS FOR THE BACKSTAGE WORKERS — Sometimes the hardest workers get the least glory. Do you know the type? Take Bill Morrison, for instance. He’s been a full-time self-funded volunteer for the last five years at JoshuaProject.Net. http://www.joshuaproject.net He’s the “other member” of the Joshua Project “team”. (Truth is, there are only two of them. Dan Scribner is the more well-known, and it’s Dan we normally highlight, but Dan will be the first to tell you that Bill is the one who faithfully and meticulously manages all Joshua Project data, statistics and computer application. Dan’ll go on to point out that Bill is the one who “disassembled” the Bethany profiles into the photo, map and text elements and carefully cataloged each element so we could build the new web profiles. Dan would add that after getting permissions, Bill is the one who spent weeks carefully going through Paul Hattaway’s new Buddhist World people profile book incorporating all the relevant data into the Joshua Project database (this new Buddhist info should be on the Joshua Project website by the time you get around to reading this). Bill is the one who made 150 language maps one-by-one for an Indian researcher. And that is only the beginning. Dan would say, without Bill there is no Joshua Project.

He is the kind of behind-the-scenes servant that would never want us to mention him. Dan Scribner tells folks that Bill “will have a very heavy crown in heaven and a front-row seat.” And you know what? You probably know one too. In Dan’s office, they go by the name of Bill. In my own, they answer to names like Penny, Melanie, Wayne, Julie, Bob, Aaron and others. How ’bout finding one of them in your world today — and say thanks.

Because this is a “Back Page” about the “back stage”, the workers we all know but say so little about. In fact, for all of you today, we give thanks to the Father of Lights, who illuminates the caverns of our minds so we can clearly see through the empty space in our heads to the beauty of the jewels in yours! To all those backstage workers, we give thanks and praise to God!

All sponsorship money will go *directly* toward helping us pay for a new part-time secretary! She started Monday and — *already* she’s made a difference! She’s returning phone calls, emails, messages, and letters, some of which have gone unanswered for longer than I’m willing to publicly admit. :-) Thank you so much for your help! As a result, you’re seeing a catch-up on Brigada Todays… already! And then there’s the product produced by a Caleb Project staffer friend of mine who is a closet-programmer. John Hanna at Caleb Project has spent his spare time over the last year creating an amazing anti-spam tool. It’s custom designed from the ground up to be the perfect anti-spam tool for small to medium-sized organizations. It’s already being used on more than 100 servers (w2k, *nix, os/x, even os2) on three continents and is blocking more than 30,000 spams (and about 200 viruses) per day. If your organization hasn’t solved the spam problem yet, send your IT guy/gal to http://assp.sf.net — it’s not only a great solution, it’s free.

NETWORKING FOR MISSION — The Web can be used for networking in a remarkable way. Read how a web-savvy missionary used the Internet before his arrival, to make his ministry much more effective: “Before I arrived in [Asian country] as a missionary, I went online to the city I was sent to. It is a mixed Christian-Muslim regional center in a very remote part of the country.) I then read the daily paper online, emailed the mayor and local officials, joined a local discussion group, got informed and made friends. When I arrived, a number of people whom I had met online invited me out to dinner and my ministry started as soon as I arrived. I also managed to join the email group of the then Vice-President (now President) and made a few constructive comments – so when I had problems with my visa, I just sent an email and it was soon fixed! I reckon that I saved between six months to two years of ministry time by making a wide range of high-level friends before I arrived and “starting fast and well-informed”. Sure, only 1% of people there were online, but that 1% were the leaders and they boosted my ministry so it became effective. Church-planters can use the Internet to network their way to success.”

HOW’D BRIGADA TODAY GET RID OF THE YAHOOGROUPS ADS? — That seems to be one of the most popular questions asked these days. Here’s the scoop: Back when we were distributing Brigada Today via eGroups, the eGroups people offered a special whereby you could pay a fee to “buy out” the ads. Next thing you know, Yahoo purchased eGroups and the whole thing became YahooGroups. Since that time, I haven’t been able to verify that YahooGroups offers the same deal — but they *did* apparently “grandfather” us in without ads, to honor the previous deal that eGroups had sold. So — the bottom line: I don’t know of any way that new YahooGroups moderators can get rid of those pesky ads on current groups. They can be fairly . . . risque’, eh? Have you seen the one with the scantily clad lady and that bothersome wireless Internet video camera? Yikes. I asked my son, who in the world would want to buy a wireless Internet video camera anyway, and then we saw an ad in the local newspaper about how that little gizmo had become one of the most popular-selling items on the Net. Great. And our groups just keep boosting it along. :-) Anyway… sorry I can’t be of more help! Maybe some Brigada participant has figured them out!

10) THE BACK PAGE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLANS — Is your organization like ours? We see press releases about how important it is to do emergency response planning… so then we draw something up… but then years pass without its use… and everything gets out of date. If the events of Sept. 11th have taught us anything, they’ve taught us to be prepared for disasters beyond our imagination. No one in the FAA or FBI imagined the evil that could be carried out against the civilized world… until they saw it unfolding on their own office televisions. I guess… it’s time we dusted off those emergency response procedure instruction manuals again, eh? For us in Team Expansion, we’re going back to basics with simple stuff. We’ve had written instructions for all our teams now for 15 years… but few have actually implemented them. We don’t have fingerprint cards… or even data cards completed on every worker yet. But we’re about to re-start with new energy. My hunch is… there are many others feeling the same burden these days. May God grant us all mercy as we cautiously proceed forward.

Got a missions opportunity? Want one? Have we got the spot for you! And best of all… it’s free! For example, suppose you’re like David and Vicky and you need 8 English Teachers in China. Here’s what I’ll tell them: Just email the note to brigada-opportunities@yahoogroups.com. You don’t even have to join. Your email will automatically float into the conference even though you’re not subscribed! That way, you get to place your notice and those who are searching for the opportunity get to read the options! When the prospective applicant hits reply to ask for information, the reply goes straight to the person who sent the message (not to the whole conference). Those who want to see these opportunities need only send a note to brigada-opportunities-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Then sit back and read the mail… and maybe see your future! Oh… and by the way, if you’re interested in teaching in China, no experience needed, September 1, 2001-June 30, 2001 (with full airfare reimbursed for 9 month commitment, medical, room, meals, internet, holidays and travel bonus, plus a stipend of the equivalent of $200 USD per month) see the webpage at www.sias.net.cn.
TRACKIN’ THE TREK

www.urbana.org is Trackin’ the Trek. The Global Urban Trek is an InterVarsity Christian Fellowship sponsored urban mission to various megacities around the world. Students are applying their fields of study to urban transformation as they share the Gospel with the poorest of the poor and consider a lifelong calling to urban ministry. Several times a week, from June 1 through the end of July, urbana.org is providing up-to-date student journal entries, photos, prayer requests, and articles. Viewers can see life in the garbage heaps of Manila, the slums of Nairobi, and the streets of Cairo through the eyes of students. They can learn about labor practices in Calcutta, micro-enterprise development in Bangkok, and ministry to street kids in Mexico City. Log on to http://www.urbana.org/feat.trek.cfm to Track The Trek.

HONDURAS VISION TRIP FOR LEADERS IN CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

A team of North American leaders in children’s ministry will journey to Honduras in February of 2002. You might be one of them! The purpose of the vision trip is to ignite or refresh children’s ministry leaders’ vision for the world and equip them to impart that vision to others, especially the kids they lead. Honduras has been identified as the location for the vision trip because of pronounced needs of children and families in the wake of Hurricane Mitch. If you are interested in knowing more about Christian education and service in a cross-cultural context, please send an email to VisionTrip@ThroughtheBible.com. Details of this ministry opportunity will then be sent to you by the end of July. This vision trip is being sponsored by World Concern, World Servants, Through the Bible Publishers, and Restoration Evangelical Church in Honduras. Please inquire or forward this announcement to leaders in children’s ministry that you know.

WYCLIFFE’S CHURCH TRIPS

Many churches are looking for a way to expand their ministry beyond their doorstep, their community, even their country. On a Vision trip with Wycliffe, a group from a church can reach people around the world with the hope of God’s Word. Each trip is an in-depth cultural experience including visits with local churches and believers, ministry opportunities such as Scripture distribution or assisting translators at work, and a short orientation to linguistics, local culture and overseas living. Participants’ worldview will be changed as they play a part in providing God’s Word to those without it. For more information look at, http://www.wycliffe.org/visiontrips/ ,call 407-852-3600 or e-mail kyle_faircloth@wycliffe.org.

MINISTRY IN THE RUSSIAN-SPEAKING WORLD…

Robert and his daughter, Heidi, recently graduated from Russian Language Ministries housed at Columbia International University in the sunny palmetto state. They attended partially on the recommendation from an earlier edition of Brigada Today! He writes that “they have 50/50 balance of native speakers and American teachers: the first group so you speak correctly, and the second so you can understand how to speak correctly! There is an excellent cultural component to the training.” He served for two years in the former Soviet Union actively studying language, and because the folks at R.L.M. understand how English-speakers think, they were able to surpass all he learned in the first six weeks. He writes, “Russian grammar is incredibly complex, and the folks at R.L.M. make it accessible. I can return to the Russian-speaking world with both linguistic and cultural confidence that I didn’t have before.” Hail the good folks at R.L.M. at 800-799-7976 or 803-333-9119 or rlmoffice@juno.com or on the web at: http://www.russianlanguage.org. Before going to Russia, go to R.L.M.!!

Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us! Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!
