4) What’s a “MOOC?” Only the latest 30,000-person virtual classroom

I’ve just wrapped up a great 3-day retreat with 7 other CEO’s of mission agencies. One of our number is plugged in well in the educational scene. He couldn’t wait to tell us about the rapid roll-out of these Massive Open Online Courses, or “MOOC’s,” as they’re called. Read more about them here…

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massive_open_online_course

Any class with 30,000 students gets my attention, even if only 20% of them graduate. Exciting stuff.

(Thanks Tony!)

3) Four Online Graduate Courses by and for Missionaries —

Multi-Cultural Teamwork

Relevance Theory (for Bible translators)

Introduction to the Bible Translator’s Assistant

GIAL courses are taught by people with many years of missionary experience as well as doctorates.  These are graduate courses requiring plenty of study but you’ll come out with a deep and practical understanding of the topic. Check them out at

3) Online Video Counseling Available to Missionaries –

Care Port Counseling is an online video counseling ministry to those who work abroad, whether in missions or humanitarian aid. Donations subsidize the counseling, so that fees are minimal for clients. The counseling is done via Skype video, so relatively high speed internet is required for video streaming. Services are provided by a licensed counselor with 25+ years’ experience in Wycliffe Bible Translators as both a translator and counselor.  She is now counseling with Care Port to focus the ministry online and to broaden the availability to others working abroad. 4) Wow — Free Team Building Course from the O’Donnells —

I’m tellin’ ya. These people are cool. Kelly and Michele O’Donnell have made available to our entire Brigada audience a Team Resiliency course which provides a quick infusion of practical concepts and tools that mission/aid teams can review together. Each lesson includes a core reading, discussion items, handouts, and either a 10 minute audio lecture or a power point. The topics cover: Team Characteristics, Health/Dysfunction, Team Leaders, Team Building/Conflict, Summary-Applications. Though they didn’t choose the Brigada Training site :-), the service they used is free, easy, and maybe more fun than the Brigada site anyway. :-) You’ll have to set up a user name and password there, but that took us all of 30 seconds. Find their course at…

http://www.nixty.com/course/Team-Resiliency

After you sign on, click on the course title. The password for the course is: strongteams

We are very grateful to Kelly and Michele for partnering with us in this way. May God bless their unselfish spirit for the good of all our teams and for the growth of God’s Kingdom!

(And thanks to this organization for pitching in $25 toward Brigada!) We also received a $20 gift out of the blue, along with this note: “I’m a long-time subscriber and regularly pass on info to other missionaries. I saw Doug in a vimeo video recently and it became more “personal” for me, not just a mailing list email. I am thankful for Brigada and bless you in all your efforts to connect the Body of Christ worldwide.

15) The BackPage: I Love “The Beauty of Partnership” Study Guide

[It's not often we write the BackPage on a single resource, rather than a theme, but track with me for a sec' -- writing about this single resource *is* writing about a theme. You'll see.] This past week, Werner Mischke dropped us a copy of his new yet-to-be-published study guide, “The Beauty of Partnership Study Guide: Standard Edition.” It’ll be published by MissionOne directly, and it’s a tribute to several innovative and relevant focal points. See if you agree:

*** It’s concise — In 61 pages, they provide the entire study guide. There are tons of fill-in-the-blank exercises for participants. Werner has made it really easy to make this course interactive.

*** It’s complete — In 140 *additional* pages, Werner packages all the readings you’ll need (some top-notch resources, by the way). These are all “in the back of the book,” so to speak — so this is one volume. It doesn’t *feel* like 200 pages in all. It feels *thin*, but it *is* 200 pages. (Several folks are trying to convince him of a $39.95 selling price. But we think we have him convinced to hold it at $24.95. But the thing is — he has to pay royalties on much of the 140 pages of extra readings… plus the simple costs of shipping *and*, the guy has been working on this pretty much full-time for the last 18 months. So – what would you charge?) On top of all this, he provides a companion website with introductory videos on every topic. So — it’s like having a DVD in the back of the book, without the disk. And the website helps form community — plus possible ongoing mentoring/coaching from the author and compadres. Gotta love the format. Smart.

*** It’s critical — These themes are biblical … and they are relevant. Godly Character (Servanthood and Listening), Cultural Intelligence (Trust and “Both/And”), and Organizatioal Competence (Accountability and Appreciation). These three major components (and accompanying 6 objectives) are arguably some of the most core issues in successful partnerships today.

I’m looking forward to pulling together a starter class using this book. My guess is — it’s going to be very effective. Werner has made it too easy for us. Lots of diagrams, drawings, and notations to call our attention to the central stuff, with clear “take-away” lessons to learn all along the way.

Frankly, I’m left with that “Rats, I wish I’d written this” feeling.

:-)

Way to go Werner.

Want to get a taste? Take a look at the current online offerings (keeping in mind that the current site is for a slightly different course). They have been *big-time* unselfish to put all this stuff online anyway, so you might as well get a taste of it. The true Beauty of Partnership site will be even better. (This domain currently forwards to a different but similar site.) …

http://www.beautyofpartnership.org

Once this book is ready for orders, you’ll hear about it right here on Brigada. In the meantime, we have a dozen or so people who will be beginning a beta test of the study … and we’ll be reporting how it goes, along the way. Currently, Werner is estimating June for final roll-out. Shew. The *format* is as radical as the content.  Hats off Werner. Gotta love it.

Doug

12) Online Training in Relationship-based Research

calebresourcesPioneering new ministry or seeking deeper insights into the culture where you live? 3) Take a Member Care ‘how-to’ Course for Free

godintheglobalofficeStudy under the people who wrote the book on Member Care (Kelly and Michele O’Donnell). Watch this interactive slide presentation and learn how to further connect and contribute to the member care field. It is oriented towards those with member care responsibilities and interests and especially towards those studying/working in the health care fields. It works well for groups that want discussion and relationship-building. It can take from 30 minutes to three hours, based on how much you want to interact with the reflection/discussion questions,  the video clips, and web links. The title, “God in the Global Office,” reflects a Christian emphasis that sees God at work everywhere (global office) together with humans and on behalf of humans. The presentation (“slidecast”) is narrated. The written notes and the audio version are also available on request.

7) Seminary Offers Graduate Degrees On Line

rockbridgeOn line or distance learning is not a new concept but quality degree programs that are 100% on line are hard to find. One of our readers (Dennis) recommended Rockbridge Seminary. Rockbridge Seminary offers the Masters of Divinity in Ministry Leadership and the Masters of Ministry Leadership degree. They also offer a concentration on Recovery Ministries with both degrees for those working in the field of Missionary Care. There are currently students from several countries enrolled and many are in cross cultural ministry. For more information log on to

http://www.rockbridgeseminary.org/about-us

or contact them by email via their website. Of course, you need web access to do this program and they can only be contacted via the web or by calling to the USA at 1-866-931-4300 toll free or through their regular telephone at 1-417-459-4323. (Note: If it’s not too much trouble, tell them you saw the item by “Dennis” in Brigada. That way, they might also smile positively on our Brigada contributor. Who knows; he might get an A in his next class — or even a tuition discount! :-) )
