YWAM publishes a yearly calendar prayer journal that lists unreached people groups to pray for on a daily basis. If you are aware of a way to keep track of and pray for unreached people groups on one’s hand-held computer, please email the information to Wayne at <wdecostaatfoursquaredotorg>. We’ll ask Wayne to let us know how his study comes out. (Okay Wayne?)

7) CHURCH PLANTING MATERIALS NEEDED — The Barnabas Ministry in Poland is looking for materials that would help them launch a national church planting movement. Do you know of any web sites, ministries or resources on the practical aspects of starting a new church? Please share it with them and us! What they want is the experienced planters sharing the details of how to give vision, train, send, start, oversee and support financially new plants. They will be organizing seminars and will also need experienced speakers to teach and answer tough questions. Also they can arrange short or long term mission trips with the goal of establishing new churches. If you can help, send Jerry an e-mail at <jerryatbarnabadotanddotpl>.

8) REACHING THE UNREACHED WITH THE GOSPEL — The world is changing fast. New technologies and new mindsets require different and creative means to reach the unreached. In Youth With A Mission, a new kind of missionary is taking advantage of these trends. Strategy Coordinators. Study at the Y.W.A.M. Frontier Missions: Strategy Coordinators Short Course 2002, Monday 10th June To Friday 12th July 2002 in Nakuru, Kenya. 10) WEB-WATCH: REACH THE NATIONS — The site,
http://www.reachthenations.org became officially active as of 2/3/02. This site contains missions resources, research related material, contact information, internship opportunity information, and a photo gallery of portraits of unreached people groups (photos are not to be used without permission). The group is currently in the process of choosing a publisher for its catalog of artistic photographs of tribal groups. Reports will be published on the site as the network of investigators compiles research information regarding specific unreached people groups. This site is expected to be a hub for ethnologic information as it relates to missions. This organizations approach to “network investigation” and information sharing is helping to fill a need for practical and academic information in support of reaching the unreached for Christ. Applications for the NCMO internship program are currently being accepted. The director of New Covenant Missions Organization can be contacted for comments at (860) 250-4792.</bsloanatovaldotcom></jerryatbarnabadotanddotpl></mijohnnyatyahoodotcom></tieatgatidotwadotcom></wdecostaatfoursquaredotorg></billatpeopleraisingdotcom>

PAYPAL CAN BE FRUSTRATING

In last week’s _Brigada Today_, we asked for feedback on PayPal (Item 1, “CAUTION: RUMBLES ABOUT PAYPAL”). We received about 10 responses — not many, from nearly 10,000 readers. One reader responded, “I run a small business in the US, and use Paypal regularly. I send/receive well over $50,000 per month, and am VERY happy with the system. It’s quite reliable, and I’ve had little or no problems.” But do read http://www.paypalwarning.com/ for the kind of thing that can happen. One email said that the PayPal VeriSign certificate expired in July 2001. That’s probably not a positive thing. :-) Losses ranged, for some, up into the thousands of dollars. One Brigada participant responded in what was probably a very fair assessment: “I’ve had several complaints with paypal, but I also have had great success. Their response is slow, but they DO respond eventually. And they’ve resolved every issue I’ve had to my satisfaction. I get about 20-30 transactions per day, and have been very happy with it.. Just like credit card systems, there are problems.. But Paypal does a pretty good job of resolving the majority of them.” One thing is for sure — several users reminded us that it’s crazy to try to use PayPal from an overseas location where they don’t do business. (They lock up your account the moment they find out where you’re located.) The bottom line of the whole study is probably this: Keep your PayPal balance low, use PayPal only from areas where they have a presence, and be watchful of every transaction. And … I guess to be on the safe side, if you have any other possible way to do the business you have to do, consider it again. It does indeed appear that Paypal is beginning to show some cracks. Rats. Why is it that the really cool ideas that are also cheap end up being short-lived. What does that tell us about “cheap”? :-) (Thanks to those who responded!)

DISTANCE LEARNING FOR NEW MISSIONARIES

Suppose you had a new recruit, eager to study, but kind of at a beginner level. Where could such a person receive training for evangelism, discipleship, and church-planting . . .especially via distance-learning curriculum (web-based preferred). Does it exist? If so, Justin <jaicheleatteamexpansiondotorg> would like to know. He’s part of a traveling team to recruit and train missionaries and he’d love to have the latest to pass along to others. He’ll also compile a report that we can make available as an auto-responder here at Brigada. Thanks!</jaicheleatteamexpansiondotorg>

VIRUSES EVERYWHERE

I’m getting, on average, 10 virus-laden emails per *day* now. It’s definitely a new day for email. I know you don’t need me to tell you this, but get Norton Antivirus 2002. It updates its own data files automatically, every time you’re on line. The day that gone.scr came out, it not only updated virus data files, it installed new filtering process software on my machine and asked me to reboot… all automatically, without me thinking about it. It not only spots viruses and worms coming *in*, but it also keeps them from going *out*. In other words, even if a Melissa-type virus-trojan-worm *does* sneak by, when it starts to send emails to everyone in your address book, Norton intercepts and stops the behavior. So it nips the *spreading* in the bud. This one simple $30 purchase would, single-handedly, make the Internet an incredibly safer place. Get it at your local computer store or at http://www.symantec.com . You don’t need the bigger “System Works”… just the Antivirus software will do. Watch carefully for all the little checkboxes if you use their site. You probably don’t need any mailings whatsoever… nor do you need any additional products to do the job.

NETWORK SOLUTIONS FORGETS

Tony at <tonyatsoondotorgdotuk> wrote this past week, “If you have a domain registered with Network Solutions, it is reported that allegedly they have not been always sending reminders to domain holders to request renewal payments. Result – lost domain. And there is a po*n company which buys up non-renewed domains of any sort, if they think there will be plenty of inbound links. Go to: </tonyatsoondotorgdotuk>

http://www.netsol.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois

and check your renewal date and make a note of it. And note that there are many cheaper domain registrars, and it is easy to transfer to them. (But choose one that others recommend to you as reliable.) And if you have a domain you no longer want, don’t let it lapse, try selling it or passing it on.” (Great input, Tony!) I like www.aitdomains.com .

THE BACK PAGE: RESPONSIBLE EMAILING

Lately, I’ve been noticing that, with the increased volume of email that seemingly everyone is getting these days, I’m more and more appreciating those who can be lovingly concise. :-) So here’s a Christmas wish list — that we would get rid of these 4 “most unwanted” email characteristics:

*** Attachments: In short, lose them. Those which end in .pif, .scr, .vbs, and .exe can ruin our hard drives. And Office extensions can contain macro viruses. If you *do* have to send an attachment, it’s polite to write first to ask permission to send it. And the recipient should have antivirus software.

*** Forwards: We never had to deal with this before the email generation, because nobody wanted to go pay for photocopies. Now it’s too easy to just keep hitting forward after forward after forward, and well-meaning friends leave all those carbon-copied addresses attached. Yikes. When will we learn to in-quote only what is needed. Honestly, I know *many* people who now don’t even download forwarded emails from their POP3 server.

*** Hoaxes: Just when I think we’re starting to be able to recognize hoaxes, another round starts up. Get the Brigada “OPC” protocol so you can spot hoaxes and similar unwarranted emails.

*** Real virus-propagation: I just don’t get it. After Melissa and everything else that has come before and after, why in the world are we still clicking on those attachments!!!??? :-) And when we *do*, why don’t we have antivirus programs with up-to-date virus data definitions. Because then, all our friends have to deal with receiving the brunt of our sloppy computing. Yikes. If these issues were spilling out in the streets, the world would be a very ugly place. As it is, it’s just the information highway that’s getting clogged with wasted virus-worm-spam. If you *must* use Outlook, go to Microsoft’s site and download the fix. Turn off Windows Scripting Host. Engage macro protection in Office. Get Norton. Please. :-)

*** Subscribe/Unsubscribe requests: If you’re part of an automated email list (like Brigada Today), try to be a responsible list member. That means keeping track of how to subscribe and unsubscribe. Some ejournals even include reminders on how to do that… in every issue. Yet literally dozens of subscribers try to prevail upon list-compilers to do their housecleaning for them… to change addresses, or to unsubscribe. Many even become angry when they won’t help. So please… it’s the most basic of all Internet functions. Learn to use the unsubscribe commands of the lists to which you subscribe. Your editors & compilers will love you for it! :-)

Thanks to any and all who can help rid the world of these email problems! :-)

FINALLY CAUGHT UP

Brigada Logo Can you believe it… finally caught up to date on Brigada Today! It’s about time! Lately, it’s been “Brigada last week“! Please forgive the “batch processing” for these last few editions. We’ll try to avoid it … but, among other things, I’ve been overseas leading a prayer journey with my family and . . . well . . . a guy can only do so much, right? I’ll try harder.

A WEALTH OF LEAST REACHED PEOPLES DATA

The first phase of the Joshua Project II website is open for business. The Joshua Project II team is a group of four former AD2000 and Beyond staff who are committed to “highlighting the least reached peoples of the world through information sharing and networking.” Following are some items currently accessible at: http://www.joshuaproject.net.
--------------------------------------

READ GENERAL LEAST REACHED PEOPLES INFORMATION

Read an overview of the Joshua Project II initiative. Read an article explaining why there are various total people group counts. Compare the various peoples lists and see a timeline of their development. Register your least reached peoples ministry activity / commitment.
--------------------------------------

SEE THE ORIGINAL JOSHUA PROJECT LIST

View the current status of the original Joshua Project list. View or download various segments of the original Joshua Project data. View people profiles from the original Joshua Project list.
--------------------------------------

DIGEST THE NEW JOSHUA PROJECT II ALL PEOPLES LIST

Download a comprehensive list of all 16,300 peoples by country. View people group lists for every country of the world. Participate in the Joshua Project II global survey. Discover interesting facts about people groups. For example, which relatively small country has over 900 people groups and which major country has only 7 people groups? Download the complete Joshua Project II Peoples information set.
--------------------------------------

THE NEXT PHASE OF THE JOSHUA PROJECT II WEBSITE

In the near future, the JP II team will work hard at…

  1. Making the data in the downloadable files available interactively on- line. This will allow, for example, a country can be selected and all the peoples in that country will be displayed. Then selecting a people, a people profile will be displayed including non-sensitive work-among information.

  2. An on-line more automated survey mechanism.

  3. A location to log your mission activity by linking your mission organization / church / denomination with a particular people group. This will be a web-based database, eventually with pre-made and user- defined queries allowing datasets such as the top 25 least reached groups, the 20 peoples most needing adoption, the largest groups without the Scriptures.

Thanks loads to Dan and the others at JP II. This could end up making a very significant contribution to the Cause. (Thanks, too, for those helping them make a go at this… like Caleb Project!!! Yahooo!) yahoo

WHERE DOES ONE LEARN SPANISH ONLINE?

Jed jedsnyderatrcndotcom  (jedsnyderatrcndotcom)   is trying to find a way to learn Spanish over the internet — relatively quickly. Of course, the ideal is learning on-site, but that having been said, let’s help the guy at least get a head start. In fact, maybe it’s time we did an autoresponder on all tools for learning other languages. We could toss in tape sets from Berlitz, Sybervision (or Intelliquest — they’re available toll-free in the USA or via Net2phone at 800-275-6940), as well as CD resources like Rosetta Stone and others. Would you send all your best sites and sources to Jed and he’ll compile the list for us and we’ll post it here in an autoresponder in a couple of weeks. Thanks Jed!

MAKING THE SWITCH TO YAHOOGROUPS

Brigada Logo It’s actually quite painless. Just get in the habit of placing the word “yahoo” wherever you would have typed “e” in egroups. There’s no hyphen. So to find the Brigada Today site on yahoogroups, go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/brigada-today There’s a custom facility to transfer your old “egroups” membership to “yahoogroups”. However, we’re guessing most Brigada Today participants probably never visited the website for egroups.com, and thus, probably never actually had an ID/password. So you can pretty much start from scratch at yahoogroups.com. The service won’t let you subscribe twice from the same email address. However, if you’re still receiving Brigada Today from a previous (and still working) email address, it is possible to receive two copies. The trick is — unsubscribe from the old service first. See the first few lines of this email for instructions.

HOW DO YOU USE CHRONOLIGICAL BIBLE STORYING IN AN URBAN SETTING?

Bible That’s what Rich untotheleastatcaracaspoordotnet  (untotheleastatcaracaspoordotnet)   would like to know. He’s looking for a chance to dialogue with others who have used or are currently using Chronological Bible Storying among low-income urban residents. His team of church planters is working in the barrios of Caracas, Venezuela, with a target group numbering more than 3 million (check out http://www.Caracaspoor.net). Because of issues of orality and literacy, the more conventional methods of evangelism have not worked well. Contact Rich with your experiences, things that worked and didn’t work, best ideas, sources, and links and he’ll make us a file that we’ll later release here in Brigada Today.

LOOKING FOR A DIGITAL CAMCORDER?

movie camera Try the Sony DCR-PC110, a brand new unit from Sony that combines a digital video camera (using the new standard, Mini-DV tapes) with a digital still camera — at just over 1 megapixel level. For web sites and most printing jobs, you’ll see little or no “jaggies”. (Higher end printing requires up to 3 or 4 megapixel stills.) The price? $1499 Though that might sound like a lot, this same technology used to cost double or triple that. To find that price, go to a site like http://www.thedigitalbuyer.com Their product ID for the Sony unit is “SNYDCRPC110”.

caution Here’s an important update!
What we didn’t know was that this is simply a DBA (“doing business as”) renaming of a company with really bad reviews… known better as “The Digital Dog”. A tech from the US Center wrote today to supply us with this web page URL: http://www.resellerratings.com/comview.cgi?TheDigitalBuyer That page has some pretty sorry descriptions of their customer service. Mike (from the US Center) recommended instead that we look at these vendors: http://www.profeel.com and http://www.bhphotovideo.com I know we’ve ordered from the BH Photo folks before. As Mike acknowledged, the price will be a bit higher, but at least you’ll get your product in a timely fashion!

Sorry for any inconvenience!
